MIDNIGHT RAIN
by
Ash Quadir
ashquadir@yahoo.com
FADE IN
EXT. MANHATTAN - NIGHT
THUNDER PEALS ACROSS THE SKY.
The skyline is lit up brilliantly and reveals the jagged
spires of the city. The rain is coming down like bullets.
The wind MOANS like a ghost.
It's the middle of the night, but in this city that never
sleeps, trouble brews in the wee hours.
EXT. SOHO SHOP - NIGHT
A flash of lightening reveals the swaying sign: "MAGICK
CANDLES & HERBS".
A taxi pulls up and drops its PASSENGER before pulling away.
A DARK FIGURE in a raincoat rushes out and makes a beeline
for the front door. The weak light from a nearby
streetlight reveals the figure as a woman. She fumbles
through her purse to locate her keys.
Another BURST of lightning tears the sky apart. The
streetlight sputters out. Lights blink out along the
narrow, deserted street. The woman is suddenly obscured by
darkness.
In the wake of the last thunderclap, there is an eerie
silence along the street. But suddenly it's broken by the
sound of CRASHING furniture and SHATTERING glass from the
loft above the shop.
INT. SHOP - CONTINUOUS
The front door opens with a CREAK. Someone rushes into the
darkness and quickly closes the door against the strong wind.
A woman SCREAMS. The sound TEARS through the ceiling
rafters from above. A man curses furiously.
SUMMMER
Rain?
Lightening rips the sky again. The briefest flash of light
reveals a WOMAN inside of the shop. Then it's dark once more.
There are more sounds of a struggle from upstairs.
SUMMER
(shouting)
Rain, what's going on?
A woman exhales sharply in pain from upstairs. She's taken
a punch to the gut.
2.
SUMMMER
(panicked)
Rain, honey, are you all right?
Somebody slaps the woman hard with a SMACK. She cries out
in pain.
MAN (O.S.)
Bitch! I'm going to --
The man's breath catches suddenly in his throat. A door
bursts open upstairs.
MAN (O.S.)
Hey, what -- what are you doing?
Tables seemed to have turned. The man appears to be
struggling. A cat GROWLS in anger.
MAN (O.S.)
Let -- let me go! What -- aahhh!
In the darkness, a BODY lands with a THUD nearby. Things go
deathly quiet.
A candle is lit. The LIGHT PUSHES OUT THE DARKNESS,
revealing a man's TWISTED BODY a dozen feet from the bottom
of the stairs. Dead eyes stare vacantly into space. Blood
seeps out of slash marks across his face and more spreads
like spilled ink from his cracked skull onto the wooden floor.
RAIN OSGOOD comes to a stop at the top of the stairs. In
her mid twenties, she's a beauty with raven tresses and
alabaster skin. The front of her gown is torn. She's
trembling.
SUMMER OSGOOD slowly approaches the body holding a candle.
She's the photo negative of her twin sister, Rain. Her
cornflower blond hair shines like a beacon in the dim light.
She glances at the body then up at her sister.
Rain is staring down at the dead man, mute with horror.
A BLACK CAT, the color of midnight and glowing yellow eyes,
brushes up against Rain's leg. He PURRS and looks down at
the dead body with some satisfaction.
Summer notices. Her lips curl into a crooked smile.
EXT. STREET - NIGHT
Police sirens WAIL in the night. An unmarked sedan with
flashing red lights ZOOMS through a puddle of rain,
showering a PEDESTRIAN on the sidewalk. The pedestrian
turns around and gives the retreating car the finger.
3.
The car SCREECHES to a stop in front of MAGICK CANDLES &
HERBS. There's already a squad car and ambulance on the
scene.
DETECTIVES JOHN RATNER and TOM SPAZIK step out into the rain.
RATNER
(stepping into a puddle)
Dammit!
Ratner's tall and reedy like a cornstalk. Spazik's short
and squat, built like a fire hydrant.
SPAZIK
What a shitty night to be out!
Ratner heads for the shop's door.
RATNER
Let's get this done pronto. I'm gonna
be off in two hours.
INT. SHOP - LATER
Ratner and Spazik take an appreciative look at the OSGOOD
SISTERS and drink in their beauty.
Summer, who is petting the black cat, looks on with concern
as Rain's WRIST is being bandaged by an EMT. Satisfied that
she'll be all right, Summer turns her attention to the
police and keenly watches what they're doing.
The two detectives tear their eyes away from the two
beauties and take a look around the shop. They notice the
CANDLES, JARS OF HERBS and POTPOURRI stacked on shelves and
tables. Their eyes come to a stop on a BLACK CAULDRON in a
corner and then to a couple of GARGOYLE BUSTS hanging from
the wall. The detectives frown with distaste.
SPAZIK
(sniffs the air)
Stinks around here. What is that --
incense?
Ratner points to a burning stick of incense on a nearby
table and nods. He walks over to the body at the bottom of
the stairs.
RATNER
(beckoning to Spazik)
Come on, Sherlock.
Ratner squats down next to the body. Sees the victim's
condition and grimaces.
RATNER
You're not looking too pretty, pal.
4.
He stands up and turns to a young uniformed cop named JOE.
RATNER
So, what have we got here, Joe?
JOE
Burglary gone bad. The vic and her --
(points to Rain)
-- had a scuffle. It got pretty wild.
Lucky for her, her cat took a piece of
his face and he tumbled down the stairs.
Split his skull open. End of story.
RATNER
That your version of events or hers?
JOE
Hers.
RATNER
Well, leave some room in that head of
yours for other possibilities, capice?
Joe nods.
SPAZIK
The vic got a name?
JOE
Jason Blount.
SPAZIK
Jesus, his face is a mess. That cat
needs a serious manicure!
(turns to the cat in
Summer's arms)
You're a dangerous little beast, aren't
you?
Spazik takes his hand and curls it into a claw in front of
the cat's face and bares his fangs. The cat HISSES back.
SPAZIK
(to Summer)
Does it have a name?
SUMMER
He's Black.
SPAZIK
I can see that.
SUMMER
That's his name.
5.
SPAZIK
(smirks)
Original.
A HISPANIC OFFICER shouts down to Ratner from the top of the
stairs.
HISPANIC OFFICER
Detectives, you better come up here and
take a look at this!
Rain looks a little worried. Ratner notices and smiles.
INT. SHOP - SECOND FLOOR - MOMENT'S LATER
There is a long corridor with a couple of rooms branching
off. As Ratner and Spazik follow the Hispanic officer, they
pass open doors: a bathroom, a kitchen, a bedroom and enter
the last room on the right.
RAIN'S BEDROOM
The room, which under normal circumstances would have been
very tidy, is a mess. There's evidence of a fierce struggle.
Furniture is overturned; the mirror over the dresser is
shattered; the bedcovers are in shambles.
Ratner turns to the Hispanic officer.
RATNER
What's up, George?
George points to an overcoat lying near an overturned chair.
GEORGE
That belongs to the vic. It may have
been hanging on the chair before the
struggle began.
SPAZIK
I thought he was a burglar? Why would
he be taking it off if he came here to
rob the place?
GEORGE
Exactly.
RATNER
Are you sure it's his?
GEORGE
Found his wallet in the coat pocket.
RATNER
Did he have any weapons?
6.
GEORGE
Nada.
RATNER
Hmmm... Very interesting.
GEORGE
There's more.
INT. SHOP - FIRST FLOOR
Summer stands apart watching the activity around her. A
COP is interviewing Rain. A CRIME SCENE PHOTOGRAPHER is
walking around the shop taking snapshots. Another OFFICER
is combing for clues.
Summer's eyes come to rest on a BOUQUET OF FLOWERS lying on
the SHOP COUNTER next to the register. She glances at her
sister.
Rain's eyes dart to meet hers. Messages are conveyed
without words. Rain glances at the BOUQUET, distressed.
INT. SHOP - SECOND FLOOR BATHROOM
George leads Ratner and Spazik inside. It's cramped with all
three in there.
George points to a cigarette floating in a bowl full of
yellow piss.
GEORGE
That could be the vic's. It's a
Marlboro menthol. Blount had a pack of
cigarettes in his jacket pocket. Want
to take a guess what brand it was?
RATNER
Marlboro menthols.
GEORGE
(nods "yes")
I think he took a leak in there and
tossed his cigarette.
SPAZIK
(making a disgusted face)
Glad he didn't take a number two.
RATNER
If he came to rob the place, why would
he stop to take a piss? He'd try to
skeedaddle outta here as quick as he
could.
GEORGE
Exactly.
7.
INT. SHOP - FIRST FLOOR
Summer approaches the COP interviewing her sister and
purposely distracts him with a question.
Rain notices the TRASH BASKET hugging one end of the counter.
She concentrates on the BOUQUET OF FRESH FLOWERS. Although
the front door is closed and there isn't the slightest hint
of a breeze, THE BOUQUET SLOWLY SLIDES ACROSS THE COUNTERTOP
AND DROPS INTO THE TRASH BASKET.
The cop passes the counter and pauses. He is perplexed and
looks into the trash basket. THE BOUQUET OF FLOWERS IS
SHRIVELED. He scratches his head and shrugs.
INT. SHOP - SECOND FLOOR CORRIDOR
George leads the detectives down to the top of the stairs.
He points down to Blount's body.
GEORGE
See the location of the body? Notice
what's wrong?
Ratner studies it carefully
RATNER
It's too far away.
GEORGE
Right. If Blount stumbled and fell --
according to Ms. Osgood -- he would have
landed near the bottom step. He's
twelve and a half feet away. I measured.
RATNER
Even if she pushed him, that's too far
away for the body to land.
GEORGE
She claimed it was the cat. Leapt up
and attacked him.
RATNER
Right.
SPAZIK
You think she threw him? She's so...
delicate looking.
RATNER
Who knows. A lot of women are lifting
weights these days. You ever see
Madonna's arms?
8.
RATNER (CONT'D)
(pats George on the back)
Keep it up, you're going to make
detective real soon. Then I can get rid
of the joker I'm stuck with.
SPAZIK
Hey!
Ratner takes his cuffs out with a SNAP.
RATNER
Looks like we're going to make an arrest.
EXT. 37TH PRESCIENT - DAY
A couple of cop cars are parked along the street. Traffic
is brisk going in and out of the building.
INT. 37TH PRESCIENT - INTERROGATION ROOM - DAY
RAIN glances at her lawyer, WARRICK DANE, nervous and
distraught. She looks small and delicate, like fine-boned
china. Warrick pats her hand and gives her a reassuring
smile. Warrick is silver-haired and sixty, with the sharp
distinguished look of an eagle. There is a resemblance
between he and Rain, because not only is he her lawyer, he's
also her father.
Ratner and Spazik are standing across the table from them.
They look like a pair of jackals ready to devour prey.
WARRICK
I'll allow my client to answer
questions, but I may cut this off at any
time. The fact that you arrested the
VICTIM of the crime is simply ludicrous!
RATNER
We don't arrest people on whims,
counselor. We have some very important
questions for her.
WARRICK
Let's make this quick.
Ratner regards Rain.
RATNER
Ms. Osgood, did you know Jason Blount?
Rain answers without looking up.
RAIN
No.
9.
RATNER
I haven't even told you that was the
victim's name and you already admit to
not knowing him?
RAIN
I overheard one of the policeman in the
shop.
RATNER
Would you mind looking up at me when you
answer, Ms. Osgood?
Rain slowly lifts her eyes to match his.
SPAZIK
So, you didn't know this guy?
WARRICK
She already told you she didn't know
him. Where are you going with this?
RATNER
Give me a chance, counselor. I'll let
you know when we get there.
(to Rain)
You said Blount broke into your shop to
rob you. We found no evidence of forced
entry. The lock on the front door was
not tampered with. And it wasn't
picked -- we checked.
RAIN
I -- I guess I forgot to lock the door.
SPAZIK
Gimme a break!
(sarcastic)
You run this shop with all these
valuable herbs and candles and you just
left the door unlocked?
RAIN
I guess I did.
INT. ROOM NEXT TO THE INTERROGATION ROOM - CONTINUOUS
TWO MEN are observing the interrogation from the other side
of a one way mirror. PHIL PARKER, a twenty something cop
with peach fuzz. The other man is DETECTIVE DARIUS BANKS, a
few years older, wiser and ruggedly handsome. Darius oozes
quiet, cool confidence.
10.
PARKER
Her sister Summer said that she came
back from a party and found the front
door unlocked. They run the shop
together and live above it.
(excited)
Did you get a look at her yet?
DARIUS
Afraid I didn't. Should I?
PARKER
Do it at your own risk. You're gonna
have wet dreams for a month if you do.
Darius smirks.
DARIUS
Why is Ratner trying to trip her up?
PARKER
Because he doesn't believe her.
INT. INTERROGATION ROOM - CONTINUOUS
SPAZIK
You left the door unlocked --
RAIN
I already gave you my answer.
SPAZIK
Oh, really? Come on, it's really hard
for me to believe --
WARRICK
Asked and answered. I'll remind you
again, Ms. Osgood was the victim of a
crime!
INT. ROOM NEXT TO THE INTERROGATION ROOM - CONTINUOUS
DARIUS
This lawyer is very passionate about
defending his client.
PARKER
He should be. That's his daughter.
Darius turns to Parker, stunned.
PARKER
(smiling, nods)
She took the her mother's last name.
Don't know why, but that's still his
daughter. Biological.
11.
INT. INTERROGATION ROOM - CONTINUOUS
RATNER
Take it easy, counselor. We're not
trying to gang up on your daughter here.
Just give us a chance to do our jobs.
(comes and sits on
the side of the table
near Rain)
Something just doesn't add up here. You
stated that the victim broke into your
shop and tried to rob you.
RAIN
Yes.
RATNER
Then how do you explain his cigarette in
the toilet?
RAIN
(confused)
What are you talking about?
SPAZIK
We found a Marlboro menthol in the
toilet upstairs. Blount smoked Marlboro
menthols.
WARRICK
How can you be sure that it was his?
SPAZIK
We.. uh, matched his DNA... from his
saliva.
WARRICK
(gives him a piercing
look, measuring the
truth of his statement)
Really, detective? You can get DNA
results back so quickly?
INT. ROOM NEXT TO THE INTERROGATION ROOM - CONTINUOUS
PARKER
They couldn't get any prints or DNA
because of the water and piss.
DARIUS
They shouldn't be lying.
PARKER
Are you kidding me? They can't help
themselves. Those two are the best
bullshitters on the force.
12.
INT. INTERROGATION ROOM - CONTINUOUS
SPAZIK
(slowly)
I meant to say fingerprints.
Ratner frowns at Spazik for lying and fooling no one. He
takes the wheel back before Spazik crashes and burns.
RATNER
Could you tell me how his cigarette
ended up in your toilet? Did he stop
for a smoke before he decided rob you?
RAIN
He came into my shop earlier in the day
and asked to use the bathroom. I
remember telling him we don't allow
smoking. He must have thrown it into
the toilet.
RATNER
Really?
WARRICK
Clearly Blount came in earlier to case
the shop. Ms. Osgood keeps a safe
upstairs behind a painting in her bedroom.
RAIN
I think he was snooping around upstairs.
I found some things out of place. I
know it wasn't me. I'm very particular
about keeping all of my things in order.
INT. ROOM NEXT TO THE INTERROGATION ROOM - CONTINUOUS
PARKER
Strike one.
Darius doesn't say anything. He keeps staring at Rain. He
seems transfixed by her.
Rain turns and looks toward the mirror and stares directly
at him. It almost appears that she can see through the one
way mirror at him. Darius shifts uncomfortably.
INT. INTERROGATION ROOM - CONTINUOUS
SPAZIK
You're still sticking to your story?
WARRICK
You're beating a dead horse detective.
13.
RATNER
(to Rain)
Please do us a favor and answer the
question one more time.
Rain turns away from the mirror.
RAIN
He was a burglar. How would I know him?
SPAZIK
You tell us. He came upstairs and took
his coat off.
RAIN
What are you talking about?
SPAZIK
We found his overcoat in your bedroom.
It was hanging over a chair. What kind
of burglar takes his coat off before he
steals?
Rain looks directly at Spazik, trying to measure the truth.
He can't handle her piercing eyes and looks away.
RAIN
Did you really find the coat on top of
the chair? I don't think one piece of
furniture remained intact after -- after
he attacked me.
INT. ROOM NEXT TO THE INTERROGATION ROOM - CONTINUOUS
PARKER
Strike two! She's turned the tables
again.
DARIUS
I read the report. These guys stretch
the truth like it's out of style.
PARKER
New York's finest!
INT. INTERROGATION ROOM - CONTINUOUS
Before Spazik can dig himself a deeper hole, Ratner takes
over again.
RATNER
Ms. Osgood, the simple fact is that
Blount obviously took his overcoat off.
That sort of behavior doesn't exactly
fit the M.O. of a burglar. He wasn't
even armed.
14.
Rain hesitates to answer. Warrick interjects.
WARRICK
(rising)
Detective, you're grasping at straws.
The coat could have easily come off
during --
Rain places her hand on Warrick's hand and makes him sit
back down.
RAIN
It's all right. I'll answer.
(closes her eyes in
deep distress, then
opens them; tears
bead her eyes)
He struck me and I fell back on the bed
and hit the headboard... I... I was
stunned. When I opened my eyes, I saw
that he'd taken his coat off and thrown
it on the back of the chair. It... it
was restricting his swings. He... he
took it off so he could hit me harder.
Ratner and Spazik swallow. They look like bullies who've
been caught picking on a little school girl.
INT. ROOM NEXT TO THE INTERROGATION ROOM - CONTINUOUS
PARKER
Strike three! They gotta be out now!
DARIUS
I think he still has a curve ball left.
PARKER
He's got no pitches left.
DARIUS
This isn't baseball, Phil.
INT. INTERROGATION ROOM - CONTINUOUS
Warrick pushes his seat back.
WARRICK
Do you have anything else?
Ratner pulls a seat, sits down and leans close to Rain.
RATNER
Can you please describe to me how Jason
Blount fell down those stairs?
15.
WARRICK
I believe the first officer on the scene
already took her statement concerning
this matter.
RATNER
Please humor me once more.
WARRICK
She's not here to amuse --
RAIN
It's all right. I'll answer.
(takes a slow sip of
water and gathers her voice)
When I refused to open the safe, he kept
hitting me, but I managed to run out
into the hallway. He ran out... grabbed
my dress and I... I fell. He tried to
hit me again, but I kept fighting him.
Somehow we came closer to the stairs.
He was about to kick me... That's...
that's when my cat leapt up and slashed
his face. He screamed and fell down the
stairs.
SPAZIK
You didn't push him?
RAIN
No.
SPAZIK
Do you lift weights?
WARRICK
(rises angrily)
That's enough!
RATNER
Jason Blount's body did not tumble down
the stairs. He flew off the stairs and
landed twelve and a half feet away.
Now, as talented as this cat may be, I
doubt he could have thrown him that far.
Rain lifts her BANDAGED WRIST.
RAIN
He broke my wrist. He twisted it around
my back and slammed my face into a wall!
16.
WARRICK
If my client even managed to throw this
man off the stairs, it's called self-
defense. No jury would ever convict
her. You have 48 hours to arraign her
or let her go!
INT. ROOM NEXT TO THE INTERROGATION ROOM - CONTINUOUS
PARKER
Strike four! Out for sure!
INT. 37TH PRESCIENT - LATER
Darius watches from a window as Warrick leads Rain to a
waiting limo parked in front of the building. Ratner and
Spazik are standing next to him, fuming.
SPAZIK
She's getting away with murder!
Outside, Rain turns briefly, looks directly at them...
Then disappears into the limo with Warrick. It pulls away.
INT. LIMO - CONTINUOUS
Rain hugs her sister and her mother FIONA OSGOOD. Fiona's
in her fifties and is as striking as her two daughters. Her
raven hair is streaked with silver.
Rain tears off the bandage around her wrist and flexes her
fingers. She appears to be miraculously healed.
EXT. HIGHRISE - NIGHT
It's a tower of dark glass that reflects the nearly full
moon which looks like it's tinged with blood.
MAN (O.S.)
(moan of pleasure)
Ahhh!!!
INT. ROGER DAVIS' APARTMENT - CONTINUOUS
MOANS of pleasure pierce the darkness.
The moon drifts out of a cloud, shining a beam of light
through the floor-to-ceiling window. It highlights two
people writhing naked in bed. A BLOND WOMAN is riding a
MUSCULAR YOUNG MAN. The man's eyes are closed in pleasure.
The woman's face is obscured.
The moon drifts behind a cloud; the room falls into darkness.
The man's movements become fierce. The woman's breath
quickens towards a climax.
17.
Moonlight returns.
The young man is on top of the woman now. The bedsheet is
clinging to his rump, revealing the tattoo of Jesus on a
cross stretched across his back. A silver crucifix dangles
from his ear. His hair is spiked. A mass of blond hair
covers the woman's face.
SUDDENLY THE TWO LOVERS BEGIN TO RISE SLOWLY INTO THE AIR.
Darkness falls again.
The man's breath catches suddenly in surprise.
MUSCULAR YOUNG MAN
What the -- I knew it!
The bodies CRASH back onto the bed.
There are sounds of struggle in the darkness.
WOMAN
You're hurting me! Let go!
A drawer is forced open.
MUSCULAR YOUNG MAN
You're going to hell!
THERE'S A FLASH OF SILVER.
The woman cries out in pain, but then she GROWLS in anger.
The man exhales in surprise.
Something is hurled through the air and lands with a CRASH.
A table lamp comes to life next to the bed. The woman
shakily rises to her feet. She's clutching her wounded left
shoulder. Blood is seeping through her fingers onto the
marble floor.
She looks across the room. The young man's body is crumpled
in a heap against the entertainment center. A TV has fallen
on top of him, crushing his skull and spilling blood and
brain matter. A knife tinged with blood lies near his hand.
He's dead.
The woman turns away from the ghastly site. Her face is
revealed.
It's Summer Osgood.
INT. 37TH PRECINCT - INTERROGATION ROOM - DAY
Three of the players are the same. Ratner, Spazik and
Warrick Dane.
18.
Now instead of Rain, Summer sits at the interrogation table.
Unlike her sister, Summer's face is not downcast. She has a
defiant look in her eyes and the faintest hint of a smile at
the corners of her lips. She has a shawl draped over her
injured shoulder and looks remarkably healthy for a woman
who has been recently stabbed.
RATNER
I'm having dejavu. Two sisters involved
in homicides --
WARRICK
Rain Osgood was cleared of all charges.
Jason Blount's death was not ruled a
homicide. Summer Osgood was involved in
a self-defense death. Not a homicide.
Please keep the facts straight.
RATNER
(sarcastic)
Pardon me, let me rephrase that for you.
(to Summer)
Two men die weeks apart while you and
your sister were allegedly trying to
defend yourselves. Don't you think
that's too much of a coincidence to
ignore?
SUMMER
No, I'd call it unfortunate. A terrible
tragedy -- but not a coincidence.
RATNER
You don't seem too upset about the fact
that a man is dead.
SUMMER
Upset that a man who tried to kill me is
dead? No, detective, any remorse I
could have ever felt for him disappeared
the moment his knife pierced my shoulder.
SPAZIK
Do you know who he was? He was the
mayor's son!
SUMMER
(snorts)
And that's supposed to impress me?
RATNER
His father is a powerful man. A woman
going out with him could go places.
19.
SUMMER
If you've done your homework, I'm sure
you know that I didn't need a spoiled
rich brat to go places.
INT. ROOM NEXT TO THE INTERROGATION ROOM - CONTINUOUS
Darius and Parker are observing again. Parker is eager to
watch another good match. Darius is more subdued, and just
as fascinated by Summer as he had been with Rain.
PARKER
The sisters are fraternal twins. They
were both educated at Radcliffe. The
family's loaded. They own a good chunk
of Manhattan. Office and retail space.
A big spread on Fifth Avenue. And, of
course, a house in the Hamptons.
DARIUS
How does a lawyer amass so much wealth?
PARKER
The mother's the one who's loaded. The
Osgoods are bluebloods. They can trace
their ancestry back to the Mayflower.
Maybe that's why the girls took their
mother's last name. She's the one with
all the dough. Fiona Osgood's a fixture
on the art scene. Loans out her huge
collection of Impressionist paintings
every year to the Met. These girls have
looks that kill and bank accounts to die
for.
DARIUS
You sound like you're in love.
PARKER
Are you kidding me? I've haven't been
able to stop my nocturnal emissions
since the last interrogation!
DARIUS
Keep it in your pants, Parker. You're
in the presence of a superior.
Parker salutes Darius and grins.
INT. INTERROGATION ROOM - CONTINUOUS
RATNER
Then why go out with him?
SUMMER
Because we ran into each other at a
party and he asked me out.
20.
RATNER
How long had you been dating each other?
SUMMER
A month.
SPAZIK
Was he ever rough with you?
SUMMER
Do you mean sex?
RATNER
(clears his throat)
O.K.
SUMMER
Yes. Roger was wild at times.
RATNER
Then why continue to go out with him?
SUMMER
Because we... had fun together.
SPAZIK
Was using knives during foreplay part of
this fun you had?
SUMMER
Roger liked kinky... but the knife was a
total shock.
SPAZIK
Why would he stab you with it? What did
you do to provoke him?
WARRICK
(rising angrily)
Detective, my client was the victim of a
crime! She came in here voluntarily!
She already gave a written statement.
We're prepared to walk out of here right
this moment.
Summer pushes her seat back. Rises and walks close to the
mirror.
Ratner quickly tries to placate them.
RATNER
I'm sorry. Please sit down. We'll...
try to be more careful with our choice
of words.
Warrick takes a seat, still fuming.
21.
RATNER
(turns back to Summer)
Why would Roger Davis attack you with a
knife, Ms. Osgood?
SUMMER
Roger was high that night. He wanted me
to do lines with him but I refused. He
was very angry, so I... tried to make it
up to him.
(beat)
But he started being rough with me.
I... I wanted him to stop. I had it. I
told him it was over. He snapped and
grabbed the knife...
Her voice trails off.
SPAZIK
Why would he keep a knife in the drawer?
SUMMER
Maybe the family's into weapons. He
always bragged about his father's gun
collection. He's some sort of big game
hunter when he's not running this
wonderful city into the ground.
SPAZIK
But were not talking about the mayor here.
SUMMER
I don't know what to tell you. Roger
rebelled against his background. He
liked to live on the wild side and ran
with a rough crowd. I know he kept a
gun. The apple doesn't fall far from
the tree. It's no surprise to me that
he would keep a knife too.
RATNER
You knew this guy was rough, but you
still saw him even though you didn't
need to ride his coattails. O.K. then
maybe you liked kinky and rough and you
had fun. Hey, we all have our vices.
But I look at you, and you just don't
look the type who would be a glutton for
punishment to me.
Ratner looks at Summer directly for an answer.
Summer doesn't say a thing. She turns her back to Ratner
and stares into the mirror.
22.
INT. ROOM NEXT TO THE INTERROGATION ROOM - CONTINUOUS
DARIUS
She's hiding something.
Even though it's a one way mirror, it looks like Summers
looking directly at Darius.
PARKER
(whisper)
Hey, keep it down. I think she heard you.
INT. INTERROGATION ROOM - CONTINUOUS
RATNER
Ms. Osgood, what is it that you're not
telling us?
Summer turns away from the mirror and goes back to her seat.
SUMMER
I have nothing to add on that matter,
Detective Ratner.
(rubs her shoulder)
I'm feeling exhausted. Do you have
anything else?
Ratner stands up and tries to loom large over Summer.
RATNER
One thing. How did you manage to throw
a two hundred pound man clear across the
room with an injured shoulder?
SUMMER
I don't know. He was trying to kill me
and I pushed him back.
SPAZIK
PUSHED HIM BACK? Do you and your sister
take steroids? Are you kidding me? For
the life of me, I still can't figure out how you two --
WARRICK
For the last time, please keep the two
cases separated! Rain Osgood did not
push Jason Blount down the stairs! Roger
Davis was trying to kill my client.
There have been documented cases where
people have shown remarkable feats of
strength when their lives were at risk.
In many cases, it's simply adrenaline.
23.
SPAZIK
Yeah, my grandmother caught my
grandfather cheating. She punched him
into next Sunday and called it adrenaline.
Ratner and Spazik are unwilling to admit defeat. They try
one last scare tactic. Both crowd up on Summer like bullies.
RATNER
I want you to think real hard about who
died here --
SPAZIK
The mayor's son.
RATNER
The mayor is devastated and angry --
(points a finger at Summer)
-- at YOU. Now, if we discover that
you're keeping something from us...
(turns to Spazik)
What is it called? Now help me jog my
memory.
SPAZIK
That's called lying. Perjury.
RATNER
Now what is it called when you kill
someone?
SPAZIK
It's called life in prison.
RATNER
Do understand us, Ms. Osgood? An
important person died. Do you have
anything you want to add?
Summer stands up abruptly.
SUMMER
Yes. Roger wasn't important -- and you
don't have a case against me. Goodbye!
Warrick gives the detectives a scathing look and follows
Summer out of the room.
EXT. SOHO STREET - DUSK
It's a trendy neighborhood. The streets are filling up as
night approaches. Cars are squeezed into every available
parking slot.
SPAZIK (O.S.)
My ass is killing me!
24.
INT. UNMARKED SEDAN - CONTINUOUS
Spazik is fidgeting in his seat, next to Ratner who is
behind the wheel.
RATNER
Awww, don't tell me you have hemorrhoids?
SPAZIK
Sitting here's killing me --
RATNER
They're finally coming out!
Their attention snaps back to a shop across the street as
the lights wink out inside. The sign outside says: MAGICK
CANDLES & HERBS. Rain and Summer Osgood come out a moment
later, hail a cab and drive way. As soon as it turns out of
view, Ratner's moving out of the car.
RATNER
Get off your fat ass. Let's go!
EXT. SOHO STREET - CONTINUOUS
Ratner and Spazik dart across the street, wary but quick.
Spazik pulls out a newspaper and stands casually in front of
the door pretending to read a newspaper and providing cover.
Ratner pulls a pick out and starts to work on the lock.
Success comes quickly. He's done this before.
RATNER
Bingo!
They slip inside quickly.
INT. SHOP - LATER
As Ratner and Spazik start to climb the stairs, a BLACK CAT
with glowing yellow eyes comes out of the darkness and
follows them.
EXT. THE OSGOOD'S 5TH AVENUE APARTMENT - BALCONY - DUSK
Summer, Rain, Fiona and Warrick are seated around a table
decked out with food and champagne.
VIRGIL, the octogenarian butler pours champagne for everyone
and quietly retreats.
Fiona stands up raising her glass.
FIONA
A toast to Warrick! For protecting our
daughters! For protecting all of us and
being there in our hour of need!
25.
Summer and Rain follow their mother's lead.
SUMMER AND RAIN AND FIONA
(simultaneously)
Here! Here!
Rain's reaction is more subdued than Summer's. She's fond
of her father, but she's a more reserved creature than her
gregarious twin.
Warrick motions for them to sit down and rises with a toast
of his own. He turns to Summer and Rain.
WARRICK
To two beautiful, absolutely magnificent
and extremely capable girls that any
father would be proud to have!
SUMMMER
We learned from the best!
WARRICK
(turns to Fiona)
Then thank this magnificent creature who
gave birth to you! She's the queen
among us and you are my princesses!
Warrick goes over and kisses Fiona on the lips and motions
the girls to come to him. He enfolds each in a great big
arm and hugs them close to his chest, kissing each on the
brow.
Fiona looks on with a smile, extremely proud of her family.
EXT. THE OSGOOD'S 5TH AVENUE APARTMENT - BALCONY - MOMENTS
LATER
The balcony offers a commanding view of Central Park. Rain
grips the stone railing and watches the sun setting behind
the buildings on the West Side. The last strands of
sunlight cast her aglow.
Rain's turned away from the celebration behind her. Summer
is still at the table laughing with Warrick; but Rain looks
distant and sad.
Fiona Osgood glides quietly up to her dark-haired daughter
and puts an arm around her shoulder affectionately.
FIONA
A penny for your thoughts, Midnight.
Rain turns in her mother's arms and steps back.
RAIN
Mother, you've always known my thoughts.
Why ask about what you already know?
26.
Fiona sees the distress on her daughter's face and the sheen
of tears in her eyes. She is moved.
FIONA
Midnight, I hate to see you suffer. You
carry things so deeply. I would take it
all away if I could --
RAIN
Would you? I don't see you giving up on
your glorious dreams.
FIONA
That's not fair --
RAIN
(softer)
I'm not ready for this, mother.
FIONA
This was a terrible setback. We will
find someone else...
RAIN
Like the last one? I can't. It's too
much for me!
FIONA
You underestimate yourself. You're of
age now. You're made of stronger stuff
than this. You're my daughter. You're
an Osgood.
RAIN
(pleading)
I want a normal life. I want to be
normal. Please!
FIONA
You can't change who you are. You can't
shirk your responsibilities.
(firmly)
I won't let you, darling.
Rain shivers involuntarily from the steel in her mother's
last words. She covers her face as the tears burst from her
eyes.
Summer has quietly come upon them. Fiona instantly turns to
her.
FIONA
Either of you.
27.
EXT. STREET - NIGHT
Ratner and Spazik are walking at a fast clip down the street.
Ratner, with the longer legs, is a few paces ahead of Spazik.
RATNER
(calls back)
Come on, pick up the pace! He'll expect
us to meet him on time.
SPAZIK
(out of breath)
Hey, he -- he needs us more than we need
him!
RATNER
You continue to believe that if it makes
you feel any better.
Ratner turns onto...
A SIDE STREET
It's dark and narrow, almost devoid of traffic. A neon bar
sign glows like a beacon at the end of the street. Ratner
and Spazik make a beeline towards it.
A BLACK MERCEDES with tinted windows slowly turns onto the
same street. It creeps up on the detectives and
inconspicuously keeps pace with them.
Spazik rushes to catch up to Ratner in a burst of speed.
The BLACK MERCEDES stops about fifty feet behind them.
Still oblivious, Ratner and Spazik start to pass under the
scaffolding in front of a building undergoing renovations.
Suddenly:
IT COLLAPSES ON TOP OF THEM LIKE A HOUSE OF CARDS, CRUSHING
THEM.
As the dust settles, the black Mercedes comes to a stop in
front of the accident scene. A back window is lowered. The
person inside is obscured in the darkness. He has stopped
to see the results of the destruction.
Two crushed hands are sticking out of the mass of metal and
wood. The detectives are dead.
As the Mercedes drives away, a HOODED MAN rushes out of the
bar and comes onto the scene of the accident. It's hard to
make out his face. This was the man the detectives were
supposed to meet. He realizes that the detectives are dead
and starts to search the area furiously, clearly looking for
something. He tries to lift one of the collapsed
scaffolding pipes but gives up because it's too heavy.
28.
He's extremely upset. Glances back and sees a crowd
approaching the scene. Defeated and frustrated, he starts
to walk away briskly.
INT. 37TH PRECINCT - CAPTAIN WEBBER'S OFFICE - DAY
Darius walks in. CAPTAIN TOM WEBBER'S standing behind his
desk. He's in his fifties, hair speckled with gray.
DARIUS
Hello, Tom.
WEBBER
Hi, Darius, have a seat.
There's a causal familiarity between them, built up over
years of friendship. Darius grabs a mint from a bowl on his
desk and takes a seat.
WEBBER
I expect you have a good idea why I
asked you to come here.
DARIUS
I have my suspicions.
WEBBER
I'm glad I had you and Parker watch over
Ratner's and Spazik's interrogation of
the Osgood girls -- though I had no idea
that they would meet such an...
unfortunate end.
DARIUS
I heard it was a scaffolding accident.
WEBBER
That's the initial finding.
DARIUS
Is there any evidence to doubt that?
WEBBER
There was no noticeable wind that night.
The construction manager said that the
scaffolding was inspected every day. He
swore that it was secure before his crew
wrapped up work that day. We couldn't
find any evidence to contradict that --
or any signs of sabotage.
DARIUS
So, it was an accident.
29.
WEBBER
We don't have any witnesses that have
stepped forward to contradict that. So,
that's the present conclusion.
DARIUS
But you aren't convinced?
Webber starts to pace behind his desk, pensive and disturbed.
WEBBER
Two of my men died, that's never an easy
thing to take.
(taps a report on his desk)
Listen, I've read what Ratner and Spazik
wrote about Rain and Summer Osgood.
They weren't too happy about letting
them go.
DARIUS
Those two were never satisfied unless
they nailed someone to the cross. Their
motto was guilty until proven innocent.
WEBBER
Yeah, I know, I had a number of
complaints over the years about their
overzealous prosecution of suspects. I
never approved of their tactics.
DARIUS
Prosecution or persecution? They were
very hard on those girls.
WEBBER
So, you thought they were innocent?
Darius takes a deep breath, answers slowly.
DARIUS
I don't doubt that they were attacked.
But there were some questionable
circumstances surrounding the two
incidents -- aside from the fact that
they occurred only weeks apart.
WEBBER
So you think the girls were holding
something back?
DARIUS
You don't have to know the pan's hot to
know if the bacon's cooking.
Webber nods knowingly.
30.
DARIUS (CONT.)
They were victims of separate attacks.
They had the injuries to prove it. But,
of course, Spazik and Ratner had their
doubts -- but they doubted everyone.
(motions Webber to
sit down)
Stop packing. You're driving me crazy.
Have a seat and tell me what's really
bothering you.
Webber takes his seat and sighs like a punctured balloon.
WEBBER
Mayor Davis called me. Roger was his
youngest son. His mother is not taking
it well. She's in the hospital. The
mayor is furious. He won't be satisfied
until someone is swinging from the gallows.
DARIUS
Summer Osgood killed his son in self-
defense. That's a fact that I'm
convinced of.
WEBBER
He simply isn't willing to accept it.
He thinks that his son was somehow
provoked.
DARIUS
Provoked? His precious son had a
history of getting into trouble. He was
a spoiled rich brat. Roger was busted
two months ago for beating this guy at a
nightclub within a inch off his life.
He only got off because he's the child
of a fat mouth political windbag with
lots of money. He was always getting
into trouble. It was just a matter of
time before something bad happened to him.
WEBBER
You're preaching to the choir. But you
gotta understand, there's a whole lot of
shit I have to deal with from upstairs.
DARIUS
If this is about politics, I won't let
it have any bearing on my work.
WEBBER
That's precisely why I want you to
handle this case. Darius, I trust your
instincts and -- even more than that --
your integrity.
31.
DARIUS
So, you've assigned me to a case
already, have you?
WEBBER
Yeah, I want you to lay low and quietly
investigate --
DARIUS
No partner? How about Parker? He knows
as much as I do.
WEBBER
Use him if you need to dig up anything.
He's good with research, but I want you
to go solo without --
DARIUS
It's nice to know that you've decided
everything without any input from me,
Captain. I never expected you to use me
to get the mayor off your back.
Webber looks hurt.
WEBBER
Come on, Darius, you have to understand --
DARIUS
I'm not interested in investigating
something to save your hide, Tom -- even
if it costs me my own.
WEBBER
You know I'd never do anything against
you --
DARIUS
There has to be merit. I won't harass
the girls because the mayor has an ax to
grind with them
Webber clasps his hands into a steeple and wearily regards
Darius.
WEBBER
Listen to me. You've admitted that you
think the girls were holding back.
There are unusual circumstances
surrounding Jason Blount's and Roger
Davis' deaths -- deaths which happened
so close to each other that it's very
hard to ignore.
32.
WEBBER (CONT'D)
Put aside the fact that the mayor is
squeezing my nuts for some answers --
two detectives who didn't want to let
these girls go -- die in a freak
accident that can't really be explained.
(holds up four fingers)
That's four dead men, all somehow linked
with these Osgood sisters. Tell me that
you don't feel there's something going
on. If you admit to me that you don't
feel anything in your gut, then I'll
bury this thing. End of story.
Darius clearly takes the burden of a correct response
seriously. He plops another mint into his mouth and leans
back in his chair. As he chews on it, he considers the
matter silently.
Webber watches him with bated breath.
Darius finally leans forward in his chair and releases a
tense sigh.
DARIUS
I can't. I think there's something
going on.
EXT. BROOKLYN BROWNSTONE - DAY
An unmarked patrol car manages to squeeze into a slot in
front of a two story house. The front lawn is littered with
toys.
Darius steps out of the car and hops up the steps.
INT. BROOKLYN BROWNSTONE - LATER
Darius is seated at a breakfast table squeezed into the
corner of the small kitchen. NANCY MYERS sits across from
him tightly clutching a steaming cup of coffee seeking
warmth from it. She's about thirty, has a weariness around
her eyes that indicates the past hasn't been very kind to her.
DARIUS
Have you had any contact with your ex-
husband since your divorce?
NANCY
I haven't heard a thing from Jason since
I remarried. Since I didn't have to
harass him for alimony anymore, he was
happy to be out of my life. Thank god
we didn't have kids together! It's been
five peaceful years.
Darius has a notebook out and glances at it.
33.
DARIUS
Your ex-husband served eighteen months
for domestic abuse.
Nancy looks away, recalling distant, painful memories.
NANCY
He lost his job at the post office. He
had a short fuse. He was always getting
into brawls with everyone. So he comes
home drunk and decides to use me as his
punching bag.
DARIUS
This happened often?
NANCY
Until I had enough and called the cops
after he threw me down the stairs. If
you wanna know the truth, Mr. Banks, I'm
not sorry that he's dead. He was a bad
egg.
(beat)
I just didn't expect things to happen
the way they did...
DARIUS
What do you mean?
NANCY
He was a big guy. I always expected him
to end up killing some girl instead of
getting himself killed. He liked
pushing women around. But this time he
got what he gave. I'm just glad the
asshole's dead. Good for this woman who
took care of him. She's a hero.
INT. APARTMENT - DAY
VERONICA hands a BLACK AND WHITE PHOTO of Rain Osgood back
to Darius. She has a punk rock look: spikes of color
through her hair and lots of leather and chain. They are
standing outside of an apartment door. The building's a dump.
VERONICA
Yeah, I've seen her come here at least
three or four times. I passed her on
the stairs. She always said hi. Seemed
like a nice lady. Can't figure what she
was doing visiting him.
DARIUS
What makes you say that?
34.
VERONICA
Hottie like her, she could have done a
LOT better than that creep! She's
classy looking, you know? A knockout.
I wish I had her looks.
DARIUS
How was he as a neighbor?
VERONICA
That asshole asked for sugar and tried
to make a pass at me once! I told him
to stick it where the sun don't shine.
DARIUS
How did he react?
VERONICA
We'll he got --
(turns to someone
passing on the stairs)
Hey what are you looking at? Are you
making eyes at me again?
A MOUSY-LOOKING MAN quickly darts up the stairs past Darius
and Veronica.
VERONICA
Lot of lowlifes living in this place.
(points to the door
next to hers)
But he used to be the worst. Now what
were you saying, detective?
DARIUS
How did Jason Blount react when you
shunned his advances?
VERONICA
Let's put it this way, if I hadn't
pulled out my switchblade, I was sure he
would've attacked me. There was murder
in his eyes.
DARIUS
You carry a switchblade?
VERONICA
Have you taken a good look at this dump?
Darius glances around at the sorry condition of the building
and nods.
DARIUS
Do you know if Jason ever got violent
with anyone?
35.
VERONICA
Yeah, he cornered this guy in the
laundry room downstairs and beat the
shit out of him when he wouldn't give up
his wallet. I heard he was fired from
his job and was struggling to make rent
all the time. Even sold his blood to
make it.
DARIUS
He sold blood?
VERONICA
He was a regular at the blood bank. How
desperate can you get?
Darius mulls this tidbit quietly.
VERONICA (CONT.)
He was a mess. There wasn't any
surprises about him. The only thing
that surprised me was why that good
looking lady would go out with him in
the first place.
EXT. NIGHTCLUB - NIGHT
A long line snakes around the building. HIP YOUNG MEN and
WOMEN are vying to get past the velvet rope.
Darius skips the long line and walks right to the front.
People shout at him, but he ignores them. A HULKING BOUNCER
accosts him.
Darius instantly flashes his badge. The man becomes a mouse.
He lifts the velvet rope and lets Darius through.
INT. NIGHTCLUB - CONTINUOUS
The music hits Darius full blast as he walks inside. Hot
flesh is gyrating against each other on the crowded dance
floor under a cacophony of colored lights.
Darius notices a couple of people snorting lines but chooses
to ignore it.
He flashes his badge at the BARTENDER. They exchange a few
words. The bartender points to a room upstairs with wall-
to-wall glass windows that looks down on to the main dance
floor. There's a party going on inside.
INT. NIGHTCLUB - VIP ROOM - LATER
Darius waits near the door as a GUARD goes over to the far
end of the room and speaks to a PUDGY MAN. The partying has
stopped. Darius' clothing is out of place. Partygoers look
at him suspiciously from lounges: guilty, nervous looks.
36.
There's still traces of white powder on some of the tables
that have been hastily cleared.
The guard turns back to Darius and waves him over.
INT. NIGHTCLUB - MANAGER'S OFFICE - LATER
Darius is seated across the table from the club owner, BRETT
TAYLOR. Taylor's in his fifties, dressed fashionably with a
couple of earrings and a face that's been lifted too many
times. He's trying to look look young -- but falling short.
Brett's a Brit, with a cockney accent.
BRETT
... don't allow any deviant behavior
here and that's a fact. I try to keep
an eye out for illicit substances, but --
Darius holds up his hand.
DARIUS
You have a pass. Let's pretend that I
have blinders on tonight. Just tell me
about Roger Davis and everything's
kosher between us, all right?
BRETT
Right oh!
DARIUS
I understand that Roger Davis hung out
here often?
Brett leans back in his big leather chair and lets out a
long plume of smoke, then crushes his cigarette into an
ashtray.
BRETT
Bloke was one of my best customers.
Bloody shame what happened to him.
Darius takes out a BLACK AND WHITE PHOTO of Summer Osgood
and slides it across the table to Brett.
DARIUS
Ever see her with him?
Brett recognizes the photo instantly.
BRETT
Sunshine?
DARIUS
Her name is Summer Osgood.
37.
BRETT
Oh, I know her right! I called her
Sunshine because she just lit up the
room. What a gorgeous creature she is.
Would have loved to shag her, but she
was only interested in Roger.
DARIUS
So, you've seen them together?
BRETT
Sure! Lot's o' times. She stuck to him
like glue.
DARIUS
Do you know how they met?
BRETT
Why she asked me to introduce her to him
she did. She had her eyes set on Roger
like a hawk.
DARIUS
(surprised)
She pursued him?
BRETT
Right, mate. Roger had a harem until
she came along. She barred her claws
and set them scattering. Wanted, Roger
all to herself.
Darius mulls the information over quietly.
BRETT
You look surprised, detective.
Darius shrugs and rises.
DARIUS
Thanks for your help.
BRETT
(surprised)
That's it?
DARIUS
Yup.
BRETT
Well, that was quick and painless. Cheers!
EXT. SOHO STREET - DAY
Summer and Rain are walking back to their shop after a quick
run to the grocery store. There's a carefree swing in their
strides.
38.
They are chatting away, oblivious to all else around them.
INT. WHITE VAN - CONTINUOUS
Strong male hands grasp the steering wheel tightly. The van
is running.
THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD
It's possible to spot Rain and Summer who are about to cross
the street and enter their shop.
Gears are shifted suddenly. The engine ROARS and the van
suddenly lurches forward straight at the girls...
INT. SOHO STREET - CONTINUOUS
Summer and Rain turn as a pair to see a white van bearing
down on them. They freeze momentarily in surprise.
DARIUS (O.S.)
Watch out!
Darius jumps out of a nearby car and hurtles his body
towards the girls.
The oncoming van SMASHES against Darius' open door, tearing
it free; but slows it down for only an instant.
Darius pushes the girls out of the way barely in time... but
the driver's side mirror catches his back and sends him
tumbling to the pavement.
He's on the ground, curled up in pain. The van is already
coming back in reverse to finish the job and run him over.
In the blink of an eye, Summer and Rain scoop Darius out of
harm's way. In the next instant, they have him inside their
shop.
Defeated the van SCREECHES away.
INT. MAGICK CANDLES & HERBS - LATER
Through a haze of pain Darius notices the BLACK CAULDRON in
the corner of the shop. He shifts his gaze and encounter
GLOWING YELLOW EYES staring at him in curiosity. His vision
is blurry. He's hanging on to consciousness... but barely.
Rain shoos away her cat.
RAIN
Black, stop being so rude!
Black scuttles away, rebuked.
39.
Darius cries out as Rain touches a sensitive spot on his
forehead. She pulls back her hand revealing a bloody gash
along his temple.
RAIN
Just a little more. It'll take the pain
away.
Darius nods, but the movement hurts. He arches his back in
agony.
DARIUS
Owww!
Rain places a hand on Darius' back.
RAIN
Does it hurt here?
DARIUS
Lo -- lower.
Rain shifts her hand to the small of his back. Darius feels
warmth spreading from her hands. The pain appears to ease.
He SIGHS deeply and visibly relaxes.
Summer hangs up the phone and comes over from behind the
counter.
SUMMER
The ambulance should be here soon.
Darius looks up at her. She shimmers in his vision. An
angel with a halo. He can't keep his focus straight.
DARIUS
How... how did you move so fast?
Rain places a gentle hand on his shoulder and leans towards
his ear.
RAIN
(whispering)
Sleep, detective.
Darius can't fight consciousness any longer. His eyelids
are compelled to close and he welcomes the blissful darkness.
EXT. BUS STOP - DAY
Darius is leaning against a lamppost, newspaper in hand. He
moves it slightly and peers across the street. He's keeping
a surreptitious eye on Summer and Rain, who are having lunch
al fresco. The sisters clearly enjoy each other's company.
Summer laughs often; Rain responds with frequent smiles,
which light up her face.
40.
A bus pulls up to the stop, momentarily blocking Darius'
view of the Osgood girls. PASSENGERS embark and disembark,
then the bus pulls away.
Darius has a clear view of the restaurant again. He notices
that Rain is sitting alone and quickly searches for Summmer...
Someone suddenly taps him on his shoulder.
SUMMER (O.S.)
Don't stand here all by your lonesome.
Why don't you come and join us?
Darius turns around, startled.
It's Summer. She standing behind him with a big grin on her
face.
EXT. RESTAURANT - LATER
Darius has joined the sisters for lunch. They don't appear
displeased or nervous.
SUMMER
You were spying on us.
DARIUS
Somebody has to keep an eye on you two.
If I hadn't shouted a warning the other
day...
SUMMER
I didn't know that you had become our
self-appointed guardian angel. We
should be grateful, Rain, shouldn't we?
RAIN
Thank you for saving our lives.
SUMMER
But we did return the favor, didn't we,
Rain?
Rain smiles but chooses not to tease Darius.
RAIN
How is your back, detective?
DARIUS
Better than expected. The doctor was
amazed that I didn't have any serious
damage. They simply couldn't believe
it. You have a magic touch.
Summer grins but tries to hide it. Rain keeps here a sharp
look.
41.
RAIN
(sincere)
I'm really glad you're doing well.
Darius notices for the first time that Rain is not wearing a
bandage on her wrist and Summer's shoulders are bare and not
bandaged. He can't even detect a scar.
DARIUS
I doubt that I have the miraculous
healing abilities that you two seem to
have. What happened to your injuries?
The sisters exchange their first nervous looks. Summer
forces a laugh.
SUMMER
It's in the blood, you know. We Osgood
girls come from a long line of healthy
people. Granny lived past a hundred.
DARIUS
(not totally convinced)
Yes, you two are amazing.
Darius reaches out for a roll. In the process he brushes
his hand against a glass of water and knocks it off the
table. It appears to be a deliberate act.
Summer is right there. Darius watches to see if she catches
the glass before it falls -- but she doesn't make a move.
The glass strikes the ground and shatters. The WAITER snaps
his head around and looks at the mess... and then at Darius.
He's pissed off.
The sisters try to suppress their laughter.
EXT. RESTAURANT - LATER
The mess has been cleaned up. Darius' lunch has arrived.
He takes a bite of his sandwich and turns to Rain.
DARIUS
You called me detective. How did you
know who I was?
RAIN
Excuse me?
DARIUS
How did you know I was a detective? I
never told you.
Rain is momentarily flustered. Summer leaps to her rescue.
42.
SUMMER
We saw that you carried a gun when we
brought you into our shop. Then the
police arrived and seemed to know you.
Put two and two together...
DARIUS
Why not call me officer then? How did
you know I was a detective?
SUMMER
Were we wrong?
Darius sees no reason to keep up the charade. These women
are too smart.
DARIUS
I'm Detective Darius Banks. Please call
me Darius.
RAIN
You want us to feel at ease with you so
we might relax and open up a bit.
Establishing a first name basis will do
that.
SUMMER
My sister doesn't say much; but when she
speaks up, boy, is it a zinger!
Darius chuckles in spite of himself.
DARIUS
All right, call me detective if you like.
SUMMER
No, Darius is fine. It rolls off the
tongue. Daa-ree-us. That's a nice
name. Of course, you'll have to call us
Summer and Rain then.
DARIUS
Fine. Summer, can you answer this. Why
did you say that Roger Davis pursued you
when it's not true?
Summer's caught off guard, but recovers quickly.
SUMMER
How do you even know if I said that?
DARIUS
I've read all the reports on this case.
SUMMER
Really? You wouldn't happen to have
been watching my interrogation, were you?
43.
Darius hesitates to answer.
SUMMER (CONT.)
And for that matter, if I remember
correctly, we were both wearing bandages
at the time. Was that in these reports
you read as well?
Summer challenges Darius with a direct stare. Weaker men
would have turned away. Darius stands his ground.
DARIUS
I had a chance to do a little
investigating. You two haven't been
entirely honest with the police. You
claimed that Roger asked you out. Well,
Brett Taylor told me otherwise. I'm
sure you know who he is.
SUMMER
Brett's got a big mouth. And your point
is?
DARIUS
He said you actively pursued Roger. Not
the other way around as you claimed.
(to Rain)
You dated Jason Blount, but you claimed
that you didn't know him. Why did both
of you lie?
SUMMER
I can assure you that we both acted in
self defense. Those men attacked us.
DARIUS
That's not what I asked you.
SUMMER
Who set you on us? What happened to
Detectives Spazik and Ratner? Where are
those bullies who love to harass
innocent young women?
DARIUS
You don't know?
SUMMER
Know what?
DARIUS
They're both dead.
The women look floored. The revelation appears to be a
genuine surprise to them.
44.
DARIUS (CONT.)
They had an unfortunate accident. You
wouldn't be able to shed any light on
that, would you?
Summer recovers from her shock first.
SUMMER
We honestly can't help you. Have you
considered the possibility that it was
the same person who tried to run us over?
DARIUS
I have, but it doesn't add up. Do you
have any idea who would try to hurt you?
Rain, who has been mostly quiet, speaks up.
RAIN
Detective, I think it's prudent that if
you have any further questions for us,
it's best that we do it in the presence
of our attorney.
Darius is reluctant to let the matter rest.
DARIUS
If you have nothing to hide, why hide
behind your lawyer?
RAIN
We were attacked. Why are you --
DARIUS
They attacked you? You claimed Jason
Blount was a burglar. Well, how many
times did you go out with this so-called
burglar before he supposedly came to rob
you?
RAIN
(pleading)
Please, let this go.
Rain's lips are trembling. She's fighting to keep her
emotions in check.
DARIUS
But you two lied to the police --
RAIN
You don't know. You just don't know...
DARIUS
Then tell me what happened. Why would
would you go out with such an abusive
man? What could make you --
45.
Rain rises abruptly. She's crying.
RAIN
I have to go.
She flees the table and tries to hail a cab from the street
corner.
Darius is stunned. He hadn't expected this.
Summer rises and drops some money onto the table.
SUMMER
Just remember one thing. The mayor had
two sons.
Summer gives Darius a pointed look before running after her
sister.
INT. DARIUS' APARTMENT - NIGHT
It's a sparsely-furnished without a woman's touch. The
perfect bachelor's pad. Everything is neat and antiseptic.
Darius is sitting depressed on his couch. The T.V. is on
but he's not watching. His attention is focused on two
black and white pictures of Rain and Summer lying side-by-
side on the coffee table in front of him. He seems to be
transfixed by those hypnotic eyes staring at him from the
photos.
Finally, he pushes the pictures aside and takes a long swig
of beer. He's clearly a man with a lot on his mind.
INT. OSGOOD'S 5TH AVENUE APARTMENT - DAY
A family gathering. Summer and Rain are seated on a couch
across from Warrick and Fiona who sit on highbacked chairs
like a king and queen.
FIONA
(shocked)
He joined you for lunch?
SUMMER
That's not accurate. He was spying on
us and we thought we'd invite him over.
RAIN
It was entirely your idea, Summer.
FIONA
At least you sister had the good sense --
46.
SUMMER
Mother, he tried to save our lives. The
least we could do was to ask him to join
us for lunch!
FIONA
Warrick, you have to say something!
WARRICK
This is a very serious matter. Somebody
tried to run you over the other day.
And now you have this detective after
you --
SUMMER
Exactly. He tried to save our lives.
FIONA
Does that means he's a friend of yours
now?
SUMMER
(coy smile)
Well, he's very handsome. Light years
beyond what Roger was.
(to Rain)
You said so yourself, didn't you Rain?
Rain blushes but doesn't deny it.
Fiona grits her teeth and points to Rain.
FIONA
He sent you running away in tears.
That's harassment!
SUMMER
(surprised)
How - ?
FIONA
I'm her mother. Don't you think I
detected something happened the moment I
saw her today?
SUMMER
(turns on Rain)
You could never keep a secret!
FIONA
That's not something you hide!
Rain, who has been sitting quietly at the corner of the
couch until now, finally enters the fray.
47.
RAIN
I shouldn't have let my emotions get the
best of me. Personally, I don't believe
he's a bad man. I didn't detect that
from him. He's just... passionate about
his work.
SUMMER
Too bad he's a police officer.
Fiona throws up her hands up in frustration.
FIONA
Oh my god, now you two are defending
him!
(rises angrily)
I've heard enough. You girls will be
staying here with us from now on. I've
missed both of you since you left.
You're too far away.
SUMMER
Mother, we only live downtown. The
birds have left the nest.
FIONA
(adamant)
Flocks come back when they[re in danger.
RAIN
We have a shop to run.
FIONA
I have daughter's to protect. You can
take the subway to work.
Summer turns to her father for help.
SUMMER
You can't allow her do to this. We
aren't children!
WARRICK
Your mother has a point.
SUMMER
You know we're fully capable of taking
care of ourselves. A little bit of
hocus pocus --
WARRICK
You're reckless use of hocus pocus got
you into this mess.
SUMMER
We had to defend --
48.
WARRICK
Maybe you didn't have a choice. You had
to defend yourselves. But both you have
drawn unwanted attention to yourselves.
This family has always been keen to be
circumspect with our talents. It's my
job to protect you, and it'll be much
easier if you're nearby. I have to
agree with your mother. You will stay
here for the time being. We're not
about to let anything happen to you.
You girls are our most precious asset.
SUMMER
Oh, of course. I forgot. You have to
keep us safe to propagate the species!
Fiona disregards Summer's sarcasm and turns back to Warrick.
FIONA
What are you going to do about this
Detective Banks?
The girls' interest is peaked. They wait expectantly for
his answer.
WARRICK
(sly smile)
I think I'll have a chat with him.
EXT. CITY HALL - DAY
Darius steps out of the subway station directly in front of
the seat of power in Manhattan. It's like an armed camp
with all the POLICEMEN guarding the place.
Darius flashes his badge at the entrance and is waved through.
INT. CITY HALL - MAYOR'S OFFICE - LATER
MAYOR DAVIS looms large behind his desk, pacing like an
impatient bull. He's a bear of a man in his sixties with
suspenders stretching against his hefty bulk.
Several RIFLES and GUNS hang on the walls. There's STUFFED
ANIMALS hanging from the walls, including a STUFFED LION'S
HEAD hanging above the fireplace. The office resembles the
main room of a safari lodge rather than the seat of power in
Manhattan. Among his many exploits, the mayor's also a big
game hunter.
MAYOR DAVIS
So, how much progress have you made?
Tell me you have something good to report.
Darius is seated in front of the mayor's desk.
49.
DARIUS
I'm still doing legwork, sir.
MAYOR DAVIS
Well, where has it taken you? Tom gave
me a glowing review of you. I hope he
wasn't wrong.
Darius chooses his words carefully in light of the mayor's
authoritative tone.
DARIUS
I interviewed a few people. It appears
that the Osgood sisters may have not
been entirely truthful --
MAYOR DAVIS
I could of told you that! What about
that girl Summer, what have you got on
her?
DARIUS
During her interrogation, she said that
your son pursued her, but I found
someone who contracted that statement.
MAYOR DAVIS
I could of told you that. Roger had
every bitch in the city after him. All
they saw was his money!
DARIUS
I'm not entirely convinced that was the
reason she --
MAYOR DAVIS
(shouting)
That's irrelevant! My son is dead,
detective! That woman killed him! My
wife is in the hospital with a nervous
breakdown. My family is devastated. I
want her to pay for what she did to us!
(points to the
stuffed lion's head
hanging above the fireplace)
I've hunted every type of game there is.
I stood that beast down without
flinching. I admire the hell out of
lions. If one of their cubs is
attacked, the lion will tear the son of
a bitch to pieces. I feel every inch
the lion right now!
Darius is taken aback by the sudden eruption of anger. He's
momentarily at a loss for words.
50.
The mayor checks his anger and deflates into his seat like a
punctured balloon.
MAYOR DAVIS
You'll have to excuse me.
(sighs)
Do you have any children?
DARIUS
No.
MAYOR DAVIS
Then you can't possibly understand the
depth of my loss. Why are you here?
DARIUS
You have another son...
MAYOR DAVIS
Yes. Greg.
DARIUS
I wanted to get in touch with him.
MAYOR DAVIS
(surprised)
You want talk to Greg?
DARIUS
Yes.
MAYOR DAVIS
What do you want with him? Where is
this coming from?
Darius is reluctant to answer, but he can't lie to the mayor.
DARIUS
It's a thought that came to me after
speaking with Summer Osgood.
MAYOR DAVIS
(incredulous)
You're taking advice from her? Are you
out of your gourd?
DARIUS
Sir, I don't want to leave any stone
unturned. Your son may be able to help
me.
MAYOR DAVIS
(snorts)
You want to talk to Greg? Be my guest.
You'll find him at St. Patrick's Cathedral.
51.
EXT. ST. PATRICK'S CATHEDRAL - DAY
Bells PEAL as Darius enters this grand structure along Fifth
Avenue.
INT. ST. PATRICK'S CATHEDRAL - CONTINUOUS
A PRIEST presides over mass from a pulpit all the way down
at the other end of the cavernous building. The man's
captivating sermon fills the hallowed confines of the huge
cathedral with the help of many well-placed speakers.
Darius starts to walk down the center isle towards the priest.
INT. ST. PATRICK'S CATHEDRAL - FATHER DAVIS' OFFICE - LATER
FATHER GREG DAVIS presides like a king behind his Louis XIV
desk and high-backed chair gilded with gold. He's in his
late thirties with a swirl of salt and pepper brown hair.
Although a priest, he would have looked just as regal in a
Armani suit as he did in his priests' robes.
A LARGE GOLDEN CRUCIFIX WITH JESUS WRITHING IN AGONY hangs
behind Father Davis reflecting spears of light from the
chandelier. He clutches rosary beads as he talks.
FATHER DAVIS
My father is a wealthy man. He
conquered business and then set his
sites on this city. You would think he
would have wanted his sons to follow in
his footsteps, but that wasn't the case.
The only thing he demanded of his sons
was passion. He saw my passion for God
and did not stand in my way. While his
mission in life now is to reshape this
city, my mission is to cleanse its soul.
DARIUS
He clearly loved your younger brother
very much, but --
FATHER DAVIS
Was he proud of him or disappointed? I
don't know. But I can tell you this,
Roger was very bright -- and
unfortunately wasting his potential.
Despite the different paths we took in
life, my brother and I loved each other
very much. And although I didn't
approve of his lifestyle, in the months
leading up to his death, I was winning
him over slowly. He had made promises
to clean up his act. He even attended a
few of my services.
52.
FATHER DAVIS (CONT'D)
I could have done so much to make him a
better man. A flock's strength grows
with the addition of each man.
DARIUS
He was your brother not a member of your
congregation.
FATHER DAVIS
It was only a matter of time. Blood is
thicker than water. I take his loss
very, very personally.
(places his arms on
the table)
Now, Detective Banks, tell me why you
are here? Frankly, I'm surprised.
Darius approaches the subject with guarded steps.
DARIUS
I wanted to know if you knew Rain or
Summer Osgood. Have you ever met them?
FATHER DAVIS
(shakes his head vigorously)
No, but unfortunately they're my
neighbors. I know the parents lives a
few blocks up Fifth Avenue.
DARIUS
We're you aware that your brother was
dating Summer Osgood before his death?
FATHER DAVIS
Yes.
DARIUS
Did he ever discuss her with you?
FATHER DAVIS
I wasn't his confidant, but I told him I
didn't approve of his dating her.
DARIUS
Why?
FATHER DAVIS
Because she doesn't belong to faith!
(sneers)
Her beliefs leave much to be desired.
(abruptly)
Where are you going with this? What are
you really here?
Father Davis gives Darius a penetrating stare. Darius
shifts uncomfortably. Poses his next question carefully.
53.
DARIUS
Father, what kind of car do you drive?
FATHER DAVIS
I don't own a car. I don't have the
need for one.
DARIUS
Do you have access to a vehicle through
the Church?
FATHER DAVIS
I rarely have the time or need to leave
this place. This cathedral is my home.
DARIUS
When was the last time you left this
place?
FATHER DAVIS
(perturbed)
Are you accusing me of anything?
DARIUS
No, I'm --
FATHER DAVIS
Because I don't appreciate your lack of
respect. I suddenly feel like I'm on
the witness stand.
Father Davis has adroitly turned the tables on Darius. He
retreats a bit.
DARIUS
My apologies, father. You misunderstand
my intentions. I'm only trying to do my
job and pursuing every lead that's
presented itself.
FATHER DAVIS
You grapple with straws that will lead
you nowhere.
DARIUS
I have to respectfully disagree. I --
FATHER DAVIS
(abruptly)
Do you believe in God, detective?
Darius is caught off guard by the question. Father Davis
stares at him closely, like he's trying to peer into his soul.
FATHER DAVIS (CONT.)
Do you believe in God? Do me the favor
of answering that question, if you will.
54.
DARIUS
(slowly)
Most of humanity, I think, believes in
the existence of a higher being.
FATHER DAVIS
I didn't ask about humanity's belief. I
asked if you believed in God. Don't you
ever look around at the world
surrounding you and sense the divine?
Don't you even feel in your gut that you
are staring at the Lord's handiwork?
Darius takes the time to consider his response carefully.
DARIUS
There's a voice inside of me that tells
me that God must exist. Science tells
me that he may not. My mind tells me
that I'll never fully understand our
existence or the existence of a higher
being. And my heart tells me that I'm
not meant to.
FATHER DAVIS
(impressed)
A very wise answer. Good, detective.
DARIUS
Father, now it's my turn. Where are you
going with this?
Father Davis points to a picture on the wall to his left,
jiggling the rosary in his hand. It's a great big oil
painting of Michelangelo's Last Judgment which depicts Jesus
casting sinners into hell.
FATHER DAVIS
My God won't tolerate blasphemy or the
blasphemous. Sinners will be cast into
hell -- that is a fact. It is also a
fact that my brother's killer will have
to answer to my God for her sins!
Darius notes the fervent glint of fanaticism in the priest's
eyes and the vein throbbing on forehead.
DARIUS
Father, if she is guilty of anything,
the law will eventually bring her to
justice. I'm trying to determine --
FATHER DAVIS
God's judgment will be the final
judgment. The law has failed to execute
that judgment.
55.
DARIUS
The law has not even had a chance to
finish its job. I promise you, if there
was foul play involved in your brother's
death, justice will be served.
FATHER DAVIS
I pray for your success, detective. I
really do...
(sighs ponderously)
But I really don't think that you're
prepared to deal with what these girls
really are.
Darius wants to ask what he means, but Father Davis rises
abruptly and goes to the door. He holds it open.
FATHER DAVIS
You'll have to excuse me. I have to
attend to prayers.
Darius sees the set expression on the Father's face and
realizes that the interview's over. He rises stiffly and
leaves the room more disturbed than when he came in.
EXT. OSGOOD'S 5TH AVENUE APARTMENT - DAY
Darius crosses over from Central Park to the gilded building
in one of Manhattan's most dignified districts. He pauses
to confer with the DOORMAN and enters.
INT. OSGOOD'S 5TH AVENUE APARTMENT - LOBBY
The ornate doors of the elevator slide open. A ELEVATOR
OPERATOR bids Darius to step inside.
INT. OSGOOD'S 5TH AVENUE APARTMENT - HALLWAY
Darius steps out of the elevator into the penthouse.
VIRGIL, the octogenarian butler is already there waiting for
him, impeccably dressed in his penguin outfit with white-
gloved hands.
Before Darius has a chance to admire the rich and elegant
foyer, Virgil directs him towards a set of double doors.
VIRGIL
This way please...
Darius follows him through into a...
LONG HALLWAY
Darius is amazed by it length and pauses to admire it. It's
tiled in Italian marble with several branching corridors.
56.
Ornate and impeccably furnished, the hallway contains
paintings any museum would gladly have featured in its main
gallery.
The butler waits patiently as Darius gawks at his
surroundings. He's seen this reaction before.
Self conscious, Darius turns away from the frescoed ceiling
to notice...
A FLASH OF BLACK HAIR as somebody crosses an intersection in
the hallway.
DARIUS
Rain?
Rain steps back into the main hallway. She's accompanied by
a SPANISH MAID with a LARGE GOLD CROSS hanging around her
neck.
Rain is not entirely surprised to see Darius and comes to
greet him. The maid trails dutifully behind her.
RAIN
Hi.
There's some awkwardness between them, but Darius tries to
press through it.
DARIUS
Hi... are you visiting?
RAIN
No, my sister and I stay here now. My
mother has been worried about our safety.
Darius nods in understanding.
DARIUS
Listen, about the other day... I was a
little hard on you. I'm really sorry.
(beat)
Sometimes I get too involved in my work,
but I don't want you to think I'm on a
witch hunt.
Rain smiles in spite of herself, then becomes serious.
RAIN
(softly)
I'm not a murderer, Darius. You have to
believe me.
DARIUS
I want to believe you, I really do.
(almost pleading)
Just tell me what really happened.
57.
RAIN
I -- I can't.
WARRICK
(O.S.)
Detective Banks!
Darius turns to see Warrick Dane emerge through a large set
of double doors at other end of the long hallway. He
approaches Darius with long strides and seems to grow with
each step. Darius is a tall man and not accustomed to
looking up at people, but Warrick Dane demands it. He has
an intimidating presence.
Dane doesn't look pleased that Darius has stopped to talk to
Rain. He places himself between Darius and Rain like a
barrier and points to the doors of his study.
WARRICK
Let's talk in my study, shall we?
Darius tries to glance back at Rain but Warrick's huge body
blocks her.
Rain continues on her way down the side hallway. The maid
and butler follow.
Warrick escorts Darius the rest of the way to his study. He
opens the door for Darius and allows him to enter. Warrick
pauses before he closes the door, when he notices Fiona who
has suddenly stepped out into the hallway from one of doors.
They seem to exchange silent words of understanding before
he enters and closes the door behind him.
INT. OSGOOD'S 5TH AVENUE APARTMENT - WARRICK'S STUDY - LATER
The room is a lushly adorned Renaissance library complete
with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, Oriental carpets and a
huge marble fireplace which is large enough to roast an ox.
Warrick pours two glasses of red wine. Sets one in front of
Darius and glides behind his desk to take a seat in an
imposing leather chair. His movements are fluid as a
cheetah. The man exudes charisma and authority.
WARRICK
Thank you for agreeing to meet me here.
Darius nods but doesn't say anything. He's waiting to hear
why he was asked to come here.
58.
WARRICK (CONT.)
I'm acutely aware of the ongoing
scrutiny of Summer and Rain -- despite
the fact that they were both interrogated
and released without being charged of
anything. One would think that that
would have been the end of the matter.
DARIUS
They were never on trail --
WARRICK
-- or acquitted of a crime. I know. So
double indemnity doesn't apply. You can
argue semantics, Detective Banks, but if
I were to guess, this is really about a
father -- who happens to be a very
powerful mayor -- and unwilling to
accept the accidental death of his son
and is intent on revenge. Am I right,
detective?
DARIUS
There were some inexplicable
circumstances --
WARRICK
Please spare me. I've heard all of this
before.
(sighs)
I just wish they were left alone.
They're young women in their prime. It
would ease my mind greatly if they found
the right young men and settled down.
The events of these past few weeks has
been very taxing on their emotions.
They're sweet girls. They don't deserve
it.
Darius sees a father's earnest concern but doesn't comment.
Warrick notices that Darius hasn't touched his wine and
points to his glass.
WARRICK
Taste it. It's a merlot. It's from our
very own vineyards in Salem.
Darius is a little confused. Warrick clarifies.
WARRICK
Salem, Massachusetts. Yes, I agree, an
unusual place for vineyards. My wife's
family has held land there for many,
many years and put it to good use.
59.
WARRICK (CONT'D)
Fiona and I brought a strain back from
France years ago. Please humor me and
give me your opinion.
Warrick watches with intense interest to see if Darius takes
a sip. He seems pleased when Darius brings the glass up,
swishes the wine around and brings the glass to his lips.
Darius takes a sip and then another.
WARRICK
Isn't it robust?
DARIUS
(truthful)
It's very good.
(puts the wine down)
Now, about --
WARRICK
Yes, back to business. I believe I'm a
good judge of character. I don't
believe you're a puppet or that you're
out to get the girls. You have doubts
and are keen to get answers or,
otherwise, you wouldn't have accepted
this case, which is a thinly-veiled --
if that -- attempt by the mayor to exact
revenge. You're not interested in
revenge, but the truth. So, in this
task I wish you luck, because you will
ultimately discover that Rain and Summer
both acted in self-defense. The only
thing that they are guilty of is self-
preservation. If anything, you deserve
my gratitude for protecting the girls
the other day.
DARIUS
Is that why you asked me to come here?
To thank me?
WARRICK
Yes and more. I want to know how much
success you've had in determining who
tried to hurt the girls? Do you have
any leads?
Darius is reluctant to reveal anything. Warrick presses.
WARRICK (CONT.)
Come, come, there was an attempt on
their life. Are you telling me that
you're not investigating? The law's
protection and investigative skills
don't extend to Summer and Rain?
60.
DARIUS
Of course they do.
WARRICK
Then what have you discovered? Do you
have any suspects? I can bring the
girls in here to ask you that question
directly and you would be bound to tell
them, but you're a man of reason, what
have you discovered detective?
DARIUS
(slowly)
I've interviewed someone, but that's all
I can tell you. This person is not a
suspect at this point.
WARRICK
Who was it?
DARIUS
I can't tell you that.
(firm)
I won't reveal any information that may
jeopardize this investigation, Mr. Dane.
You're a lawyer, you can understand that.
WARRICK
I was a lawyer, and, yes, I came out of
retirement temporarily to defend my
girls. But when I speak to you about
them, I speak as a father who is very
concerned about his daughters.
DARIUS
And it's your prerogative to want
answers, but I'm sorry but I can't give
you any right now.
Warrick notes the firm set of Darius' jaw and doesn't press.
He points to an oil painting on the mantel above the
fireplace. It's a PORTRAIT of Warrick and Fiona, flanked by
Rain and Summer.
WARRICK
They mean everything to me. There isn't
anything I wouldn't do for them.
(points out the window)
There is some threat out there. I fear
for the girls. We've asked them to move
back here and, as long as they stay
home, it's within my power to protect
them. But out there -- if you choose to
keep your eye on them, even as you are
investigating them -- I would be
comforted by that.
61.
Warrick rises and comes over to Darius and extends his hand.
WARRICK (CONT.)
Detective, I wish you luck on your
mission. In the end, you'll come to
exonerate Rain and Summer, that's
something I'm sure of.
Darius is caught off guard. He warily shakes his hand.
WARRICK (CONT.)
Good day. Virgil will show you out.
Darius is shell-shocked. Warrick had invited him to talk.
He hadn't expected the meeting to be so brief and the
dismissal so swift.
WARRICK(CONT.)
I'm sorry, detective. Was there
something else you wanted to discuss
with me?
Darius rises, shakes his head.
DARIUS
No, I guess we're finished.
Warrick walks Darius to the door and holds it open for him.
Virgil is waiting patiently outside.
As soon as Darius leaves, Warrick closes the door, clearlyrelieved. He quickly goes over to his desk and removes a
KIT from a drawer and opens it. It contains an assortment
of items: PLASTIC GLOVES, SWABS, Q-TIPS and TEST TUBES.
Warrick puts on the plastic gloves and takes out a Q-Tip.
He gingerly picks up the wine glass Darius had been drinking
from and holds it up to the light. TRACES OF SALVIA can be
seen on the rim. Warrick carefully wipes off the saliva
with a Q-tip and places it in a test tube and seals it.
Then he takes out another test tube and pours some of the
wine into it and seals it with another stopper. The red
wine looks like a vial of blood. Warrick holds it up to the
light and smiles.
The door opens suddenly. Startled, Warrick turns to see who
it is. He relaxes visibly when he sees Rain, but he still
doesn't look pleased.
Rain has stopped in her tracks and is staring at the vial in
Warrick's hand and then at the glass of wine.
RAIN
(points to the vial)
What is that?
62.
Warrick quickly puts the vial in the kit and closes the box.
He steps in front of the desk blocking everything from view.
WARRICK
Midnight, you should have knocked before
you came in.
Rain suddenly realizes what Warrick's been up to.
RAIN
(very upset)
Why are you doing this, father?
WARRICK
You shouldn't concern --
RAIN
This has to stop!
WARRICK
(adamant)
You know it can't. This is all about
survival.
Warrick approaches Rain and gently caresses her silky black
hair.
WARRICK
(softly)
I do only what's best for you,
sweetheart. Maybe this time --
RAIN
Not anymore!
Rain whirls and runs out of the room.
INT. OSGOOD'S 5TH AVENUE APARTMENT - RAIN'S BEDROOM - LATER
Rain is curled up on her bed clutching a pillow and weeping
quietly. Black is on the bed next to her. He brushes up
against her affectionately.
Summer enters the room without knocking. She instantly goes
to Rain when she sees that she's been crying. Summer sits
Rain up on the bed and puts an arm around her.
SUMMER
Rain, honey, what's wrong?
RAIN
It's... it's happening again!
Rain starts to tell her sister everything. Summer listens
quietly.
63.
INT. APARTMENT BUILDING - DUSK
Darius enters through the front door and stops to get his
mail from a wall of mailboxes. He glances at the elevator
and sees that it's at the top floor. Decides to take the
stairs instead. He starts looking through the mail as he's
climbing.
He tears open an envelope and takes out its contents...
And stops suddenly.
He glances back at the front of the envelope. It has no
return address; his address is typed neatly.
He glances back at the NEWSPAPER CLIPPING that was sent to
him.
INSERT PICTURE
ROGER DAVIS AND THE MAYOR ARE GIVING BLOOD. The caption
reads: Davis' Kickoff Blood Drive.
Darius turns his attention to a sheet of paper. It's bare
except for the following typed text:
Ashton Genetics Labs
1235813
1236100
1247333
Darius makes a U-turn, goes back down the stairs and rushes
out through the front door...
INT. 37TH PRESCIENT - LATER
Parked behind his desk, Parker is going through paperwork.
He looks bored to tears, on the verge of dozing off.
A newspaper clipping and piece of paper are slammed onto his
desk. Startled, Parker looks up and see Darius. A big grin
splits his lips.
PARKER
What's up, boss?
DARIUS
You used to work for forensics, right?
PARKER
Until I threw up one too many times.
DARIUS
Do you still have connections there?
64.
PARKER
Depends on what kind of connections
you're talking about...
INT. COFFEE SHOP - DAY
Darius gives Parker a coffee and takes a seat across from him.
DARIUS
So, what did you come up with?
PARKER
You haven't told me whether this has
anything to do with the Osgood case?
DARIUS
Yup.
PARKER
I heard they played Florence Nightingale
with you the other day?
DARIUS
(confused)
What are you talking about?
PARKER
Rumor is they tended to your injuries
after that van hit you. Boy, could I
picture them in a nurse's outfit. Sexy!
DARIUS
(smiles)
Did you go to the blood bank?
PARKER
No, there's too many of them in the
city. Too much leg work.
DARIUS
You're a cop. Legwork --
PARKER
Hey, I went to the source. I found out
everything I need to know there.
DARIUS
Ashton Genetics?
PARKER
Yup.
DARIUS
What have you got?
65.
PARKER
You gonna introduce me to the Osgood
girls?
DARIUS
They could be murderers, you know? I
haven't established their innocence yet.
PARKER
I'll take my chances. I'll get off
before I go off, know what I mean?
Darius tries to hold back a grin.
DARIUS
Park it Parker. Just cut to the chase.
Parker takes out the piece of the paper that Darius gave to
him and spreads it out on the table. He points to the
words: Ashton Genetics Labs.
PARKER
Ashton Genetics does paternity testing
using DNA and, lucky for you, they do
work for the NYPD too. That was my
inside connection. I know one of the
guys working there from my days in
forensics. He let me have a peak at
their files.
DARIUS
Did you take lessons from Ratner and
Spazik? I'm sure that's kinda illegal.
PARKER
Kinda? We're talking totally. Do you
want to know what I found out or do you
want to argue about ethics?
DARIUS
Just tell me what you found.
Parker points to the three numbers on the sheet.
PARKER
These are file numbers for DNA samples
and their results for three different
people. My friend looked up the results
for all three. Testing focused on a
specific gene pair. All three had the
same gene.
DARIUS
What type of gene is it?
66.
PARKER
Don't know. He couldn't identify the
chromosome structure, but it looks like
the tests were trying to isolate a
mutated gene.
DARIUS
Mutated?
PARKER
Yup. He did an exhaustive search in the
text books but couldn't find a single
mention of it anywhere. It's a total
mystery.
DARIUS
What's the link with the blood bank?
PARKER
(conspiratorial whisper)
It looks like somebody was paying
somebody to get samples of blood that
was given at the blood bank. And not
just the blood bank in the newspaper
clipping but every single blood bank in
the city.
DARIUS
How would all that get to Ashton?
PARKER
The Red Cross collects all of the blood
given at the different banks and then
distributes it to wherever it's needed.
My guess is somebody at the Red Cross
was paid to collect samples and had them
shipped to Ashton for testing. This has
been going on for over a year now.
You're talking about thousands of people.
To do something like this would require
beaucoup bucks. And get this, the DNA
results were only for males. Not a
single female.
DARIUS
How'd you find that out?
PARKER
You have to give your personal info and
medical history when you give blood.
That info was shipped with the blood
samples sent to the Red Cross and then
to Ashton. It was listed with the DNA
results for each individual.
67.
DARIUS
(points to the sheet)
Are there names attached to each of
these numbers?
PARKER
Yup. Person number one is --
(beat)
Jason Blount. Person number two is --
(beat)
Roger Davis. Drum roll please.
(mimes drumming)
And person number three is --
(beat)
Darius Banks!
DARIUS
(startled)
Me?
PARKER
Did you give blood recently?
DARIUS
No. It's been a couple of years.
PARKER
Could be another Darius Banks I guess.
Always could take a sample of your DNA
and do a comparison.
Darius has a sudden thought.
DARIUS
You don't need just blood to get DNA,
right?
PARKER
You can get it from hair, skin cells,
bone, teeth, tissue, urine, even vomit
and feces.
DARIUS
All types of bodily fluids, right?
PARKER
Sure. Semen. Shoot in a cup --
DARIUS
Saliva has DNA, right?
PARKER
Yes, sir.
SMASH CUT:
68.
Warrick Dane presses Darius to take a sip of wine. He
reluctantly does.
SLAM CUT BACK TO PRESENT:
DARIUS
(under his breath)
Bastard!
PARKER
Hey, what did I do?
Darius rises and pats Parker on the back.
DARIUS
You did a good job. I'll put in a good
word for you with the Captain.
PARKER
Are you some sort of X-man or something?
Darius looks at him confused.
PARKER (CONT.)
You, Blount and Roger Davis. You got
some sort of mutated gene. Hey, boss,
what's so different about you?
DARIUS
I don't know, but I intend to find out.
I owe you one, Phil
PARKER
Get me a date with one of the girls and
we'll call it even!
But Darius is already out the door.
EXT. MAGICK CANDLES & HERBS - NIGHT
An unmarked patrol car squeezes into a slot along the street.
Darius rushes out and enters the shop.
INT. MAGICK CANDLES & HERBS - CONTINUOUS
A bells JINGLES above the doorway. Darius is immediately
assaulted by the overwhelming smell of incense, scented oils
and burning candles. The aroma is not unpleasant, but it
takes him a moment to get used to it.
The light in the shop is subdued. In the background, ENYNA
is playing through the speaker system.
There are a few CUSTOMERS in the shop. All female. They
glance at Darius. Clearly, he is out of his element.
69.
Darius finds Rain behind the register. Her large, luminous
eyes grow wide in surprise when she sees him.
RAIN
Darius --
DARIUS
I need to talk to you. NOW.
Rain glances around the shop. Customers are watching with
interest.
RAIN
I'm going to close up the shop soon.
You'll have to wait --
DARIUS
Where's Summer?
RAIN
It's her night off.
DARIUS
Look, we have to talk. It's important.
RAIN
(firm)
Half an hour.
(then, softly)
Please.
Darius relents and nods.
RAIN (CONT.)
You can wait in the shop if you like.
Darius starts to look around.
INT. MAGICK CANDLES & HERBS - LATER
Rain locks the shop door as the last customer leaves.
Darius follows her back to the front desk.
RAIN
What's so important?
Darius takes out the newspaper clipping and sheet with file
numbers and spreads it out on the counter. He watches her
reaction closely.
Rain regards the material before her with apparent surprise.
DARIUS
Why did you send me this?
RAIN
I didn't send it to you --
70.
DARIUS
(adamant)
I don't believe you.
RAIN
I have no reason to lie. I didn't send
it to you.
DARIUS
Then who?
Rain appears to know but she won't say who.
DARIUS (CONT.)
Do you have any idea what I found out?
RAIN
Darius...
Rain clamps up
DARIUS
What?
RAIN
I... I....
Rain's voice falters. She is grappling with herself to
reveal something but can't bring herself to do so.
DARIUS
(shouts)
Rain, would you please tell me what the
hell's going?
Rain shakes her head and walks away. She can't.
EXT. 5TH AVENUE - NIGHT
Summer emerges from a subway station bordering Central Park
South carrying a big bag of goods. Across the street is the
building her parent's lives in. She has just come back from
a shopping expedition.
Summer heads for the corner and waits for the light to
change. A HOODED MAN approaches her quietly from behind.
It's not possible to make out his face. Summer senses him
and starts to turn...
The man jabs a NEEDLE into her side. Summer sways
unsteadily. Her hands go slack and she drops her bag.
Before she can fall, the Hooded Man has his arm around her
waist and holds her up. They can be mistaken for a couple
now.
He starts to guide her towards the park. She is too weak to
resist.
71.
INT. MAGICK CANDLES & HERBS - CONTINUOUS
Darius follows Rain over to an oil painting on the wall that
depicts a group of women in circle, arms raised to a bulbous
moon hanging in a starry sky.
DARIUS
Rain, what's going on?
Rain's thoughts are lost in the painting. She's standing
still as a statue.
Darius touches her shoulder and forces her to turn around.
He sees the terrible sadness in eyes and words of rebuke die
in his throat.
RAIN
I want to tell you so much... but -- but
I can't.
DARIUS
Do you know why your father asked me to
come and see him? He wanted a sample of
my DNA!
Rain doesn't feign surprise.
DARIUS (CONT.)
What does this have to do with Blount
and Roger Davis? What does it have to
with me? Do you know that we all have
the same mutated gene? What does this
mean?
RAIN
He wants to --
Rain suddenly clutches her head in pain and sways unsteadily
on her feet. Darius instantly catches her before she falls.
RAIN
(under her breath)
Summer...
Darius turns her to look directly at her; his face is etched
with concern.
DARIUS
Are you all right?
RAIN
Summer. She's in trouble!
Rain detaches herself from Darius and rushes out the door.
He runs after her.
72.
EXT. CENTRAL PARK - CONTINUOUS
There appears to be nobody around at this hour of the night.
Summer MOANS in discomfort, but she's not lucid or has the
power to resist.
The Hooded Man leads Summer off the main walkway and into a
thatch of woods...
EXT. STREET - CONTINUOUS
An unmarked police car is snaking through traffic at a
terrific speed.
DARIUS (O.S.)
Where is she?
INT. UNMARKED SEDAN - CONTINUOUS
Darius is driving. Rain is in the passenger seat, extremely
upset.
RAIN
Central Park.
DARIUS
It's a big place. Do you know where?
She closes her eyes, straining to grasp something, then
opens them up.
RAIN (CONT.)
South... Central Park South. Hurry!
Darius is confused by Rain's curious behavior but holds his
questions at bay. He turns on his flashing lights and guns
the car forward.
EXT. CENTRAL PARK - SMALL CLEARING - CONTINUOUS
The Hooded Man emerges into a small clearing carrying Summer
over his shoulder now. Shafts of moonlight filter through a
canopy of overhanging branches.
He lays Summer against a tree at the edge of the clearing
and props her up on her feet. Holding her with one hand, he
removes a LENGTH OF ROPE from the folds of his jacket and
starts to tie her around the tree.
EXT. STREET - CONTINUOUS
HORNS BLARE angrily as Darius passes through a red light.
Down the street, the trees of Central Park are visible now.
His own SIREN blares as he weaves between traffic and guns
the remaining distance.
As he approaches Central Park...
73.
He swerves just in time to avoid a HORSE DRAWN CARRIAGE.
The HORSE rears into the air in fright, almost toppling the
DRIVER and the COUPLE nestled in the coach.
The sedan SCREECHES to a halt. Darius and Rain jump out and
run into the park.
EXT.CENTRAL PARK - SMALL CLEARING - CONTINUOUS
Summer is bound to a tree. Strong, thick ropes are wound
around her arms and legs restricting her movements.
The Hooded Man is gathering twigs and fallen branches and
arranging them around her feet into a cairn.
Summer struggles against her bindings but the drug injected
into her body has weakened her and she can't do much. She
has regained enough of her senses to see what the Hooded Man
is doing. She cries out in distress.
SUMMER
Rain! Help me!
EXT. CENTRAL PARK - CONTINUOUS
Rain is running at a breakneck speed down a path, moving
incredibly fast for a woman. Darius is having a hard time
keeping up with her.
Rain suddenly stops and cocks her ear as if she's heard
something. She points to a thicket of woods nearby.
RAIN
This way!
Darius follows Rain as she disappears into the trees.
EXT. CENTRAL PARK - SMALL CLEARING - CONTINUOUS
The cairn of branches and twigs around Summer's feet is
complete. The Hooded Man sprays lighter fluid onto it. He
grabs a bunch of dried moss and produces a lighter. He
looks at Summer and spats at her feet and lights the moss.
HODDED MAN
Heathen!
He tosses the moss onto the wood, which instantly catches
fire. The flames dance quickly upwards and lick Summer's
shoes, setting them on fire
She screams in pain.
EXT. CENTRAL PARK - CONTINUOUS
Summer's scream pierces the dark woods. Rain and Darius
both hear it.
74.
RAIN
(shouts)
Summer!
She plunges through the trees hysterically, ignoring the
branches and sticks that impede and tear at her clothes.
Darius manages to stay on her heels. They run through a
dark corridor of trees and emerge onto...
A SMALL CLEARING
Summer's shoes have been burnt off completely. The
CRACKLING flames have risen higher around her legs and are
nipping at her skirt now, blistering her skin. She's
fainted from the pain and hangs limp against the tree.
RAIN
Summer!
The Hooded Man turns startled. He sees Darius and Rain and
instantly bolts into the woods.
Rain rushes over to her sister. She plunges her hand into
the flames and starts to pull at the ropes that are binding
her.
RAIN
(to Darius)
I have her. Go after him!
Darius hesitates. He can't believe what Rain's doing.
RAIN
Go!
Darius turns and goes after the Hooded Man.
EXT. CENTRAL PARK - WOODS - CONTINUOUS
Darius plunges through the woods. Branches SNAP ahead of
him as the Hooded Man tries to flee, but it's still not
possible to see him.
The chase continues along a zig zag, when suddenly the
noises ahead of him ceases. Darius errs on the side of
caution and stops. The trees ahead of him look menacing;
it's not possible to see anything beyond the shadows.
He has his GUN clutched tightly in his hand. Suddenly hears
a movement to his left and turns at the sound...
But it was only a distraction; a tossed stone.
A TREE BRANCH comes flying through the air from the other
direction and hits the hand holding his gun. The weapon
goes off as he drops it.
75.
The Hooded Man appears out of the darkness in a wild rush.
Darius turns a moment too late...
The Hooded Man swings another tree branch and sends him down
to the floor. As Darius tries to rise, another blow follows.
He collapses on to the ground and lies still.
The Hooded Man turns and flees.
EXT. CENTRAL PARK - SMALL CLEARING - LATER
Darius returns, a little unsteady on his feet. There's
blood on the back of his head, but, otherwise, he's all right.
Rain has freed Summer from the ropes. She's kneeling beside
her sister on the ground.
Darius instantly rushes over to them.
Rain turns to him for answers.
DARIUS
He got away.
Darius regards Summer. She is awake, but MOANING in pain.
Most of her clothes are singed and both of her legs are red
and pockmarked with blisters. Rain's hands are burnt as well.
RAIN
(turning to Darius)
Can you pick her up? We can take her to
my parent's --
Darius takes out his cell phone.
DARIUS
I'm calling an ambulance. Both of you
need to go to the hospital.
Rain rises to her feet with a determined look on her face
that is uncharacteristic of her.
RAIN
(shakes her head vigorously)
No.
DARIUS
(rising)
Are you crazy!?!
RAIN
We'll be all right. Just listen to me,
please. Our place is nearby. We can
easily walk over there.
Darius is shell-shocked with surprise.
76.
DARIUS
Rain, you both need medical attention!
Rain doesn't listen. She tries to pick up her sister on her
own. Darius relents. He quickly intervenes and takes
Summer into his arms and starts to head out of the woods.
INT. OSGOOD'S 5TH AVENUE APARTMENT - LATER
The elevator doors open. Darius and Rain step out into the
foyer where Warrick, Fiona and Virgil are already waiting.
The Spanish maid rushes to the scene as well and grabs the
cross around her neck in distress when she sees Rain.
Warrick instantly takes Summer into his big arms away from
Darius. They exchange tense stares but no words. Warrick
appears surprised to see the scorching anger in Darius' eyes.
Fiona cries out and enfolds Rain into her arms. They hurry
away down the corridor. The Spanish maid trails after them.
Virgil notices the blood on the back of Darius' head.
VIRGIL
May I tend to you injuries, sir?
Darius shakes his head "no" and steps back into the elevator
and leaves.
EXT. OSGOOD'S 5TH AVENUE APARTMENT - BALCONY - DUSK
A full moon hangs in the sky bathing the world below in a
golden glow. Rain is seated on the balcony petting Black's
luxurious black fur. The cat is quite content and PURRS.
Rain is lost in her thoughts. Her hands are red, but no
longer scorched.
VIRGIL(O.S.)
Ms. Rain. A phone call for you.
Rain turns around. Virgil is holding out the cordless to her.
RAIN
Who is it?
VIRGIL
Mr. Darius Banks.
Rain stops petting Black, takes the phone and brings it to
her ear. Black is upset and scampers away. Virgil retreats
back into the penthouse.
INTERCUT BETWEEN RAIN ON THE BALCONY / DARIUS IN HIS KITCHEN
77.
RAIN
(surprised)
Darius?
Darius is sitting alone at a small breakfast table, fiddling
with his dinner, phone pressed to his ear.
DARIUS
Hi, Rain.
RAIN
How did you get this number?
DARIUS
I'm a cop.
RAIN
Look, if this is about your
investigation, I'm not --
DARIUS
I called to find out how you and Summer
were doing.
RAIN
Really? This is not about --
DARIUS
Relax, I have no other motives. Honest.
Or should I assume that you are terrific
since you both appear to have miraculous
healing abilities?
RAIN
We're both doing fine. Thank you for
asking.
DARIUS
I'm glad to hear it. It was... uh... a
terrible ordeal that you went through.
Rain looks pained at the memory of it.
RAIN
How is your head? Virgil told me that
it looked bad. You should have accepted
his help.
DARIUS
I'm all right. It was just a cracked
skull. I took a needle and sewed it up
myself. You have no idea how difficult
it is to sew behind your head. I broke
a dozen needles.
RAIN
You didn't go to the hospital?
78.
DARIUS
That was a joke.
RAIN
Oh.
DARIUS
Besides, if I remember correctly, I
couldn't convince you to go to the
hospital.
Rain doesn't immediately reply.
DARIUS (CONT.)
Are you always so serious?
RAIN
Summmer's teased me about that since we
were children. You should talk to her.
I'm quite boring.
DARIUS
I'd rather talk to you. And you're not
boring.
Rain's pale cheeks flush. It takes a moment for her to find
her voice.
RAIN
(softly)
Thank you.
DARIUS
Well, let me let you go. I might not be
able to keep my promise and get back
into investigation mode and ask you
questions you're not prepared to deal
with.
RAIN
I appreciate your consideration.
DARIUS
This time sure. But next time we meet,
I don't think I'll be able to resist.
RAIN
There'll be a next time?
DARIUS
I'd like there to be.
(beat)
Rain?
RAIN
Yes.
79.
DARIUS
Can we just go out for drinks nor maybe
dinner? I'll take what I said back, no
business I promise. I -- I would like
to get to know you better.
Rain stand statue still, unsure of a response.
DARIUS (CONT.)
Rain, are you there?
RAIN
Yes.
DARIUS
Can I have an answer.
RAIN
(long pause)
Yes.
DARIUS
How about if I pick you up after you
close your shop this Thursday?
RAIN
I close at nine. See you then, Darius.
Goodnight.
DARIUS
'Night, Rain.
Rain and Darius hang up together.
EXT. DARIUS' APARTMENT BUILDING - DUSK
A GLEAMING BLACK LINCOLN LIMOUSINE is parked along the
street in the Meat Packing District. It stands out on they
grimy street.
Darius turns a corner onto the street. He has Chinese
takeout tucked under his arm. A lonely bachelor's meal he's
intent on devouring after the daily grind of a long work day.
Darius passes the Lincoln and searches for his keys at the
door to his apartment building. A SUITED DRIVER gets out of
the limousine and holds the back door open. A tall, lithe
woman steps out.
FIONA
Mr. Banks!
Darius turns at the voice, sees who it is, and is totally
shocked to see that it's Fiona Osgood.
She steps up to him.
80.
FIONA
Mr. Banks, I know it may not be the most
convenient time, but perhaps... might I
have a few words with you?
Darius numbly nods "yes".
INT. DARIUS' APARTMENT - LATER
Fiona Osgood, dressed in a striking navy blue outfit, stands
out like a gilded ornament in Darius' spare living room.
He's clearly uncomfortable, star struck by this elegant
woman but quickly offers her a seat on the couch. She sits
down, takes her jacket off and even her prim white gloves
and places them on the coffee table.
Darius sets the takeout on the breakfast table and hangs his
coat in the closet. Fiona watches his every move, also
carefully studying every aspect of his apartment. She
notices how neatly kept it is, even though it's a bachelor's
pad. She's impressed.
FIONA
I'm sorry to have come at such an odd
hour. I've interrupted your dinner.
Darius walks back into the living room.
DARIUS
I have Chinese take out. Chicken lo
mein. If you haven't eaten --
FIONA
Oh, no, no. I've already had dinner.
Thank you.
DARIUS
Can I offer you something to drink?
FIONA
No, thanks. Mr. Banks, please have your
dinner. Do you have take out often?
DARIUS
I'm a bachelor. It's a staple for us.
FIONA
Life-long?
DARIUS
So far.
FIONA
Not committed are you?
DARIUS
Excuse me?
81.
FIONA
Do you have a significant other?
DARIUS
Um... no.
Fiona gives Darius a direct stare.
FIONA
You need a woman in your life.
She's as captivating as her daughters. It's hard not to be
mesmerized by her. Darius shifts uncomfortably and takes a
seat on the recliner across from Fiona.
DARIUS
(clears his throat)
Um... I won't beat around the bush.
Mrs. Osgood, what are you doing here?
How can I help you?
FIONA
You've rescued my daughters twice
already. I was never able to properly
thank you. I'm deeply in your debt.
I'm very close to anointing you their
knight in shining armor.
DARIUS
Oh, I wouldn't go that far.
FIONA
I shudder to think what would have
happened if you hadn't been around...
DARIUS
You have two very capable daughters.
Rain told me that she and Summer were
doing well.
FIONA
(interest piqued)
You spoke to Rain?
DARIUS
Yes.
(clears his throat)
Mrs. Osgood, if you'll excuse me for
being forward, I'm sure you didn't come
here to just thank me.
Fiona nods, takes a moment to choose her words.
82.
FIONA
I wanted to understand the man who was
investigating my daughters. I wondered
whether he was a fair man. Whether he
had integrity. Whether my daughters
stood a chance to be exonerated of
crimes they didn't commit. I'll admit
to you that I was very upset when you
joined my daughters for lunch the other
day. I feared that your methods were
overzealous. But Rain said that you
were a man of conviction. I had my
reservations, but I've come to trust my
daughter's judgment.
DARIUS
I'm not out to get your daughters.
FIONA
I hope that's true.
Fiona notices the PICTURES on the coffee table for the first
time. She moves her gloves aside to reveal the black and
white snapshots of Rain and Summer that Darius had left on
the table. She picks up the pictures, studies them and
looks at Darius questioningly.
He's momentarily flustered and struggles to find an adequate
response.
DARIUS
That's... those are part of my case file
on your daughters.
FIONA
These are striking snapshots of my
daughters if I say so myself. I wonder
when they were taken? How on earth was
the police was able to get them?
Darius doesn't offer an explanation.
Fiona sets the pictures back down.
FIONA (CONT.)
My daughters are like night and day. Do
you know that we call Rain Midnight and
Summer... well we call her Summer. But
Rain has always been my Midnight.
Darius digests quietly without comment.
FIONA (CONT.)
I can tell they both respect you. Dare
I say like? But, if I were to venture a
guess, you've connected with Rain...
83.
DARIUS
Excuse me?
FIONA
Or do you like Summer more?
DARIUS
Mrs. Osgood? Are you here to find out
which of your daughters I've connected
more with? I can't believe that's why
you're here.
Fiona's notes Darius' tone and backtracks a bit.
FIONA
No, no, you misunderstand me. That's
not why I'm here.
DARIUS
You're being her is totally
inappropriate. Can you spell out why
then?
FIONA
As I said, I wanted to have a better
understanding of who you are.
Darius is not convinced she is being entirely truthful.
Besides that he's starved and suddenly becomes irritable.
DARIUS
Are you sure? Your not here for another
DNA sample, are you?
FIONA
Pardon me?
DARIUS
DNA sample. You're husband invited me
over to chat just so he could get a DNA
sample from me.
FIONA
You must be mistaken --
DARIUS
Could you be here to get more? Or could
you tell me why he needed the sample in
the first place?
FIONA
I'm -- I have no idea what you're
talking about. Warrick invited you to
talk out of concern.
DARIUS
Just as you are doing right now?
84.
FIONA
Yes.
DARIUS
I discovered that my DNA had been tested.
Somebody took a sample. Your husband
offered me a glass of wine --
Fiona laughs suddenly. It cuts through like a knife.
FIONA
This is preposterous! He offers you a
glass of wine and you somehow connect
the dots and place the burden of blame
on him. Come, Mr. Banks, you're a much
better investigator than that! Unless
you can offer me solid proof that my
husband did something wrong -- which I
seriously doubt -- you can't convict him
for being hospitable. You're already
suspicious of my daughters, now it's my
husband -- will I be next? Maybe I've
misjudged you...
Darius realizes he's overstepped his bounds. He retreats.
DARIUS
I'm sorry for beings so presumptuous.
Fiona reaches over and takes Darius hands into her own. She
looks directly into his eyes, holds them and won't let go.
Her voice suddenly takes on a hypnotic tone as she starts to
speak to him.
FIONA
You will find that my daughters are
completely innocent of anything. You
will find that my husband has done
nothing wrong. You will become be our
friend and come to trust us.
Darius is mesmerized. He almost nods as if in a daze, but
forcibly tears his eyes away and detaches his hands from
her. Fiona takes that as the cue to rise and puts her coat
back on and picks up her gloves.
FIONA
I've taken too much of your time. You
must be very hungry. Thank you so much.
Good night, Mr. Banks.
She goes to the door and leaves. Darius sits there staring
at the door. Still a little dazed.
85.
EXT. GREENWICH VILLAGE RESTAURANT - NIGHT
Darius and Rain are having dinner outside. The place is
packed. A brisk crowd passes along on the sidewalk. Down
the street, it's possible to see a slice of the Hudson River
and New Jersey beyond.
They're both dressed for the evening. It would be easy to
mistake them for a couple.
RAIN
(indicating the restaurant)
Well, do you like the place?
DARIUS
(munching)
Food's great.
(takes a gulp of wine
to wash it down)
I guess you come here a lot?
RAIN
Summer and I love this place. Our shop
is only a few blocks away. I can't
believe all their meals are low carb.
They're all so good!
DARIUS
You don't have to watch your figure,
Rain. It looks just great.
Rain blushes. Darius realizes it's an awkward moment; he'd
spoken without thinking. But it's clear that he finds her
beautiful. Rain looks striking tonight.
RAIN
(softly)
Thank you.
DARIUS
(changing the subject)
Tell me something, why are you called
Midnight?
RAIN
(surprised)
How do you know that?
DARIUS
Your mother told me.
RAIN
When?
DARIUS
I'm trying very hard not to discuss
business tonight...
86.
RAIN
I'll give you waiver in this case.
DARIUS
Well, your mom came to visit me the
other night at my place....
RAIN
She what!?!
DARIUS
She stopped by to talk to me.
RAIN
(perturbed and suspicious)
Why?
DARIUS
She said she wanted to get to know
better the person who's investigating
her daughters.
RAIN
She shouldn't --
DARIUS
Oh yeah, she also wanted to thank me for
rescuing you and Summer and is
considering anointing me your knight in
shining armor.
RAIN
My mother shouldn't have accosted you
like that. I'll have to talk to her.
DARIUS
I never said she accosted me. I told
her it was inappropriate to visit me.
Come to think of it, my asking you out
to dinner tonight could be viewed as
inappropriate. The mayor would have my
head on a platter if he found out.
RAIN
I suspect you don't do this often.
DARIUS
What? Eat out? I do it all the time?
I'm a bachelor, remember?
RAIN
You know what I mean. I doubt you share
a meal with the person you're
investigating.
DARIUS
Never. This is a first.
87.
RAIN
What's so different this time?
The question hangs in the air. Rain waits eagerly for
Darius' response. But he's reluctant to admit anything. He
tries to be flippant.
DARIUS
Why not? We agreed to avoid business,
didn't we?
(takes another
mouthful of his
dinner and a sip of wine)
You haven't told me why your mother
calls you Midnight. Don't tell me you
were born at midnight and it was raining?
Rain chuckles despite herself.
RAIN
You're close. When I was born, my hair
was so dark compared to Summer's that my
mother thought it was as dark as
midnight. So, she called me Midnight.
I think it's corny.
DARIUS
I think it's a beautiful name. Your
mother loves you very, very much. In
fact, I think both of your parents love
their daughters so much, there's nothing
in the world that they wouldn't do to
protect either of you.
Rain knows the statement is true. Darius is staring at her,
trying to gage her response. She looks away.
EXT. GREENWICH VILLAGE RESTAURANT - LATER
Dinner is complete. Darius has paid the check. He helps
Rain out of her seat like a perfect gentlemen.
It's been a pleasant night for both of them. Neither seems
eager for it to end. Darius offers his arm to Rain.
DARIUS
Night's still young. Do you want to
take a walk?
Rain happily takes his arm.
EXT. PATH ALONG THE HUDSON - LATER
Darius and Rain are leaning against a railing along the
river -- just like two couples in love.
88.
RAIN
You're different tonight. So far, every
time we've met, you've always been so
serious.
DARIUS
I had to be. I've always been on the
clock. But it's the pot calling the
kettle black. Look at you. You've
finally loosened up. I prefer you this
way.
RAIN
It's nice to get a chance to push all my
troubles away for a night...
Rain looks out over the river. A full moon hangs in the
sky. The moonlight ripples on the water. She's mesmerized
by it.
RAIN (CONT'D)
I've always found the full moon so
beautiful. Every Beltane we go up to
our place in Salem and spend the entire
night in the woods celebrating and
dancing around the maypole. Summer and
I have loved it since we were children. It's so wonderful to wear flowers and
wild garlands in our hair.
DARIUS
Beltane. That's a pagan celebration.
Rain regards Darius with a critical eye.
RAIN
You say that if it's a bad thing?
DARIUS
Absolutely not. You're celebrating
nature... your sexuality. You're
celebrating spring and the flowering of
life.
RAIN
(impressed)
Most people don't even know that.
You've done some research.
DARIUS
I wanted to understand you better, Rain.
(beat)
You're Wiccan, aren't you?
The admission comes slowly. Rain finally nods.
89.
RAIN
(defensive)
Most people misunderstand us. They
think --
Darius holds up his hand.
DARIUS
You don't have to explain yourself to
me. I respect all beliefs. You're more
different than any girl I've ever known,
but that's what so fascinating about
you. I look into your eyes and there's
so much depth there. I haven't the
slightest doubt that you're extraordinary.
RAIN
(softly)
I'm still a woman inside.
DARIUS
(softly)
I know.
They embrace each other at the same time. Despite their
reservations, the magnetism between them is overpowering.
Darius' lips rush to meet Rain's. She initially welcomes
it, returns the kiss passionately... but just as suddenly
pulls away.
RAIN
I can't.
DARIUS
(confused)
What's wrong? I didn't mean --
RAIN
(emotional)
No, it's not you. You have to believe
me. It's not you at all.
DARIUS
What is it then?
RAIN
(in tears now)
It's -- Jason -- he --
Darius nods. Rain's anguish is completely understandable
and plainly visible.
DARIUS
It's all right. I understand. I'm so
sorry.
Darius pulls Rain to his chest and holds her close.
90.
DARIUS
It's gonna be all right...
Rain doesn't pull away.
EXT. ST. PATRICK'S CATHEDRAL - DAY
Darius can't find a spot and pulls his car into a spot next
to a fire hydrant. He steps out into a drizzle and glances
at the fire hydrant, shrugs and jogs up the steps and enters
the cathedral quickly.
EXT. ST. PATRICK'S CATHEDRAL - CONTINUOUS
It's quiet inside. The rain has kept away most of the
worshippers and tourists. Darius spots an YOUNG ACOLYTE
lighting candles near the altar and approaches him.
DARIUS
Is Father Davis here?
ACOLYTE
He's taking the van out.
DARIUS
(surprised)
He drives?
ACOLYTE
Sure. He's always driving us to church
events.
DARIUS
When did he leave?
ACOLYTE
(points to the front door)
If you're quick, you can catch him
outside. He just left.
DARIUS
(sense of urgency)
What color is the van?
ACOLYTE
White.
Darius pivots and runs to the front door.
EXT. ST. PATRICK'S CATHEDRAL - CONTINUOUS
Darius rushes outside so fast he nearly slips on the slick
landing but manages to recover his balance. He glances
around and spots a WHITE PASSENGER VAN pulling away from the
end of the street.
91.
Darius leaps down the stairs and rushes to his car where a
COP is writing him a ticket.
COP
This is a fire hydrant, buddy. You--
Darius flashes his badge. It shuts the cop up instantly.
Darius jumps into his sedan and pulls away... nearly
colliding with a car which SCREECHES to halt.
INT. DARIUS' CAR - CONTINUOUS
Darius pushes his car forward in a mad rush and just makes
it across an intersection before the light turns red. He
looks for the van... can't spot it... looks frustrated...
but then spots it stuck at the red light in front of an SUV.
Darius maneuvers his car through the traffic and closes in
on the van. He's right behind it when the light turns green
and the van pulls away.
Darius continues to follow the van down Fifth Avenue. A car
cuts in front of him suddenly. Darius BLARES his horn
angrily. The van is two car lengths in front of him now,
but it's still visible and he can follow.
The van goes a few more blocks, crosses a light and parks
along the street in front of a tall building.
Darius is now a car length behind. The car in front of him
stops abruptly at the red light... nearly causing a
collision. Now he's stuck across the intersection. But the
van has stopped along the curb. It's fine with him. He
pulls into a spot just before the intersection. The spot
still gives him a good view of the white van parked about a
hundred feet away.
He settles in to see what happens.
INT. DARIUS' CAR - MOMENT'S LATER
Darius is well aware of the building the van is parked near.
It's where the Osgoods live.
It's not a long wait. A HISPANIC WOMAN carrying an umbrella
steps out of the building, locates the van and quickly
approaches it. The driver's side window is pulled down, so
she can talk to a passenger inside.
It takes a moment for Darius to recognize the woman.
SMASH CUT BACK:
Darius spots Rain in the hallway. She is walking with a
HISPANIC MAID who is wearing a GOLDEN CROSS around her neck.
92.
SLAM CUT BACK TO PRESENT:
The woman reaches a hand in through the window... and pulls
out an envelope. She takes a moment to peak inside. It's
money. She smile and goes back into the building.
INT. DARIUS' CAR - MOMENT'S LATER
Darius watches as a GREEN LAND ROVER pulls out of an
underground garage beneath the building. It makes a right
onto Fifth Avenue. Darius catches a brief flash of the
people inside as it turns.
Rain. Summer. Fiona.
Rain is behind the wheel.
The white van pulls out behind the Land Rover.
The traffic light turns red just as Darius pulls away from
the curb. But he goes for broke and guns his car across the
intersection anyway... nearly causing a pile up... but
somehow manages to come across unscathed.
He starts to follow the van as it tails the Rover.
EXT. GEORGE WASHINGTON BRIDGE - LATER
A green Land Rover is trailed by a white van which is
trailed by a black sedan.
EXT. HIGHWAY - DUSK
The sun is dipping behind the horizon saying its last hurrah
as the moon starts to rise into the sky which is crowded
with clouds.
The trio of vehicles whiz by a highway sign that declares:
Welcome to Massachusetts!
EXT. HIGHWAY - NIGHT
The Land Rover approaches a sign along the road that declares:
Salem 10 miles
SUMMER(O.S.)
Finally!
INT. LAND ROVER - CONTINUOUS
SUMMER (CONT.)
I can't wait to stretch my legs!
Sitting in this car is more torture than
that fire. Next time we should all fly
on broomsticks!
93.
FIONA
We're not that talented, sweetheart.
You're the one who didn't want to stop
at any rest stops.
Rain glances at the sky. The sky has cleared. The moon
outside is a large, pale silver disk in a cloudless sky.
RAIN
Look at the moon. It's so beautiful.
Fiona glances out through the moon roof.
FIONA
(smiles)
The clouds have cleared up. Perfect.
INT. BLACK SEDAN - LATER
Darius sees the sign for Salem. His eyes narrow in
interest, but he doesn't look totally surprised.
EXT. HIGHWAY - LATER
The Land Rover has pulled a good distance ahead of the white
van. The van starts to weave through traffic in a rush to
catch up. It suddenly cuts in front of a STATION WAGON,
nearly driving it off the road.
Sirens WAIL. A POLICE CAR suddenly emerges out from behind
a hidden speed trap with lights flashing. It pursues the
van and quickly pulls it over to the side of the road.
INT. BLACK SEDAN - LATER
Darius whips by the van as the COP steps out of his car to
issue a ticket. He smiles and quickly speeds up to catch up
to the Land Rover.
INT. OSGOOD'S SALEM HOUSE - LATER
The Land Rover pulls into the driveway. There are number of
other homes along the street, but this one is the largest
and most imposing. It's a few hundred years old, two-
storied, with several gables. Trees crowd around it and ivy
covers it like spider webs. But the place look well kept.
The grounds are trimmed and manicured. A tall, black iron
fence circles the property. Shiny brass letters on the
mailbox proclaim: OSGOODS
DOWN THE STREET
A black sedan pulls up behind a car and turns its lights off.
94.
INT. BLACK SEDAN - CONTINUOUS
Darius watches as the Osgoods unload luggage from the car
and go into the house.
Rain is the last one to go in. She suddenly pauses at the
door and glances down the street --
Darius quickly ducks down into the car. He waits several
moments before he peeks through the front windshield.
Rain has gone inside.
Lights are on downstairs. A light flickers on upstairs.
Darius takes a careful survey of the house and its
surroundings. No one is outside.
He grabs binoculars from the glove compartment and steps out
of the car.
EXT. HIGHWAY - NIGHT
A white passenger van takes the exit to Salem, Massachusetts.
EXT. ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE OSGOOD'S SALEM HOUSE - NIGHT
Darius settles himself behind a HUGE TREE adjacent to tall
hedges. It affords him a good view of the Osgood house and
provides enough cover to hide.
He's instantly alert when a VAN comes down the street and
parks in the driveway. It's not the white passenger van
he's been following but a light colored mini van.
FIVE WOMEN step out of the vehicle. They range in ages from
their early twenties to a silver-haired woman around sixty.
They are animated and boisterous, eager to have arrived.
They carry very little luggage, just duffle bags or small
backpacks.
Darius catches a quick glimpse of Rain as she opens the door
and warmly allows her guests inside.
EXT. OSGOOD'S SALEM HOUSE - LATER
A STATION WAGON and an SUV approach from opposite directions
and meet at the driveway entrance. The SUV gives the
station wagon right of way. The station wagon follows and
parks next to the SUV. Four cars fill the driveway now.
A pair of women emerge out of each car for a total of FOUR
WOMEN. They exchange hugs and kisses and are warmly allowed
inside by Rain.
95.
EXT. ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE OSGOOD'S SALEM HOUSE - LATER
Darius checks his watch. The luminescent dial tells him
it's close to midnight.
He turns his attention back to the Osgood house when a
PORSCHE drives up and parks along the street.
A STYLISH YOUNG WOMAN hops out of the car and enters the
Osgood house.
EXT. OSGOOD'S SALEM HOUSE - LATER
The front door opens allowing a solid beam of light to
escape. WOMEN start to emerge from the house wearing long
forest-green robes that reach down to their feet. They
number thirteen in all. Their faces are hidden behind hoods.
One by one, they slip into the woods next to the house.
BEHIND THE TREE
Carefully hidden, Darius watches as the last woman pauses
before entering the woods. She scans her surroundings.
Satisfied that no one is following, she disappears into the
woods.
DARIUS
(under his breath)
Thirteen.
He checks his watch. It's midnight.
Darius glances down the street and sees a car coming. He
waits for it to pass. He is about to cross the street...
when another car comes from the opposite direction. It's a
police car on nightly rounds. Darius quickly retreats
behind the tree and waits for it to pass.
Far down the street, he sees another set of headlights
approaching. But Darius is impatient. He doesn't want to
lose the trail and darts across the street towards the woods.
EXT. OSGOOD'S SALEM HOUSE - CONTINUOUS
A WHITE PASSENGER VAN pulls up to the front of the house.
MAN (O.S.)
Look... over there!
INT. WHITE PASSENGER VAN - CONTINUOUS
The interior of the van is dark. It's hard to make out any
of the passengers.
The MAN BEHIND THE WHEEL snaps his head towards the woods
nearby. He spots Darius before he slips off into the woods.
96.
MAN BEHIND THE WHEEL
That's Banks!
PASSENGER
How the hell did he get here?
MAN BEHIND THE WHEEL
I have no idea. Let's move!
EXT. WHITE PASSENGER VAN - CONTINUOUS
The van parks along the street. SEVEN MEN emerge. All are
carrying AUTOMATIC RIFLES. It's hard to make out any of
their features in the darkness.
EXT. WOODS - LATER
Night sounds fill the air. There is the constant CHIRP of
crickets, the HOOT of an owl, the distant SQUAWK of ravens.
But there are no animals to be seen or any hooded women in
long robes. It's dark among the trees, but the moonlight
that seeps through the canopy of branches overhead is enough
for Darius to see the worn trail ahead of him. He
cautiously follows it deeper into the woods and eventually
passes...
A VINEYARD
Rows of grapes stretch into the distance. Many of the trees
are coming into bloom. Darius as no time to admire it as
the trail takes him deeper into the woods...
EXT. GRAVEYARD - LATER
A RAVEN takes flight from an ancient headstone as Darius
emerges from the woods into a very old graveyard. The
Raven's SHRILL cry echoes into the night air.
There are about a dozen graves. Many of the headstones are
leaning over, but none have fallen. Surprisingly the graves
are not overgrown with weeds. Someone has tended the site
recently. There are DRIED FLOWERS over each of the graves.
Some of the headstones have names and dates that are still
visible. Those that do all list the year of death as: 1692.
Darius glances around. There's no one to be seen. He
starts to search around the graveyard to see where the trail
continues... and discovers it directly across on the other
side. He plunges into the woods without hesitation...
INT. WOODS - TREE - LATER
Darius has wedged himself up in a tree. It gives him cover
and good view of the clearing below him.
CLEARING
97.
TWELVE ROBED FIGURES are holding hands in a circle, facing
inward. A SINGLE ROBED FIGURE stands in the center. A
glowing white moon hangs directly above bathing the clearing
in a wash of light.
The FIGURE in the center of the circle pushes back her hood
to reveal herself as Fiona Osgood.
The twelve figures surrounding her do the same. All
thirteen women are wearing garlands and wildflowers. Rain
and Summer are among the women who are part of the circle.
They look radiant and flushed with excitement.
FIONA
Sisters, behold the mother earth around
us and the fruits of her soil! She who
created us and gave us life. She who
murmurs in our ears.
(beat)
Can you not hear her?
EVERYONE
Yes!
FIONA
Sisters, behold the full moon shining up
above! Her power is at its peak. She
is calling to us.
(beat)
Can you not hear her?
EVERYONE
Yes!
FIONA
Sisters let us arise!
Fiona thrusts her hands up towards the sky as the women
around her start to move around in a circle CHANTING. They
seem to be channeling energy between them. As their pace
around the circle increases, so does the power and pitch of
their song. Then suddenly:
THE COVEN OF THIRTEEN WITCHES RELEASE HANDS AND START TO
RISE INTO THE AIR.
IN THE TREE
Darius is so startled he nearly loses his perch... but
manages to grab a limb and steadies himself. He can't
believe his eyes. The coven of witches has risen as high as
the tree tops. They start turning in a circle, eyes closed,
arms outstretched towards the moon, soaking up its magical
rays.
They seem oblivious to all else in their passion, or surely
Darius would have been spotted.
98.
Fiona Osgood hovers in the center of the circle in mid air.
She opens her eyes and smiles.
FIONA
Do you not feel the power?
The women around her stop circling in mid air and open their
eyes.
EVERYONE
Yes!
FIONA
Tonight, we have come together --
A GUNSHOT rings out. One of the witches - the woman who had
arrived in the Porsche - suddenly screams and plunges out of
the sky like a felled bird.
A GROUP OF MEN suddenly rush into the clearing. They are
carrying rifles and burning torches. One of them is Father
Greg Davis. He hurls his torch into the sky.
FATHER DAVIS
Heathens!
The torch strikes a witch, instantly lighting her clothes on
fire. She cries out and flies through the air erratically,
striking another witch and setting her on fire.
Bedlam ensues. As more bullets fly through the air, the
witches start to take evasive action. They move at
lightning speed. Many manage to dodge bullets but others
are hit and fall out of the sky. Several witches retaliate
by hurling men against trees with their telekenetic powers.
Others land on the ground and starts to engage the men in
hand-to-hand combat.
Rain and Summer - still in the air - rip off tree branches
and hurl them at their attackers, knocking several down.
Fiona Osgood is still in the air and CRIES out like a raven.
Seconds later, the SQUAWK of birds is heard in the distance.
Soon a flock of RAVENS swoop into the clearing and start to
attack the men.
Father Davis picks up a fallen torch and smashes a few
ravens out of the air. Another man starts to pick them off
out of the sky with precise shots. But there are too many
birds. The SQUAWKING fills the night air like a demented
chorus. Many ravens start to pick at the eyeballs of fallen
men.
One of the ATTACKERS has managed to grab onto the bottom of
Rain's robe and is dragging her down to the ground.
99.
Rain struggles to rise into the air, picking the man up
along with her. The man reaches for his gun.
Darius takes that moment to react. He leaps out of the air
and tackles the guy to the ground. They land with a THUD,
stunned. As Darius struggles to rise, another man turns his
gun on him...
Rain pushes out with her hands and hurls his body through
the air, slamming him against a tree. She comes down from
the air and glides to a stop next to Darius helping him to
rise to his feet. Their eyes meet. She appears surprised
to see him but also glad.
They have no chance to exchange pleasantries. Although the
number of attackers still on their feet have been halved,
most of the witches are down with injuries. Father Davis
tries to regroup them. He points to Summer and Fiona, who
are now both on the ground too exhausted to levitate in the
air.
FATHER DAVIS
Get them!
The men divide and rush Summer and Fiona, ignoring the other
witches. A few still have guns, fire them indiscriminately...
Summer and Fiona move in a blur dodging the bullets... but
the gunfire trails them... bound to catch up to them.
Darius takes out his gun. Aims at one of the men charging
Summer and misses. The man turns around and squeezes off a
burst at him... Darius jumps and rolls... come backs again
and squeezes the trigger. The gunman staggers and falls down.
Rain goes to the rescue of her mother, who is on the ground
nursing a wound to her head. She propels herself through
the air and lands directly in front of Fiona, prepared to
defend her with her life. She pushes out with her hands and
sends the lead man flying through the air. But there's a
man behind him who fires off a shot and strikes her arm,
spinning her around and onto the ground. The men
immediately pounce upon her.
Darius is unaware of Rain's plight. Summer uses the last
burst of her strength to rush past the gauntlet of men and
comes to stand beside Darius. The men instantly turn and
squeeze off a barrage of shots... Darius and Summer barely
manage to jump out of the way. In the next instant, the men
are on top of them.
While Darius wrestles with two brutes, another man hits Rain
with the butt of his gun and floors her. Father Davis grabs
Summer's neck and starts to squeeze the life out of her.
She is injured, too weak to fight him off. His eyes are
maniacal. He's totally bent on her destruction.
100.
One man is holding Darius, while another is pummeling him
with his fists. His gun is on the ground, out of reach.
He's bloody and bruised but not totally defeated. As the
next swing comes, Darius manages to twist out of his
captor's hands... leaps and grabs the gun lying on the
ground... rolls and fires off two quick shots, taking both
men down.
As the men crumple to the ground, Darius is already on his
feet. He sees Father Davis squeezing the life out of Summer.
Notices Rain on the ground trying to dodge a rifle butt as
her attacker keeps trying to pummel her with it. Darius
can't be at both places at once. He aims at Father Davis
and pulls the trigger... but nothing happens. He's out of
bullets.
Fiona Osgood goes to Rain's rescue, grabbing her attacker by
the neck and snapping it. She helps her daughter back to
her feet and they start to engage the last man together.
Darius tries to rush Father Davis but is intercepted by the
brute protecting his back. As the man swings, Darius
catches his fist in mid air and lashes out with the butt of
his gun. He follows with another blow to the temple and
downs the man. In the next instant he's trying to save
Summer... but Father Davis won't let go. His claws are
grafted to her neck. Summer's eyes are bulging... she's
gasping for breath.
Darius grabs Father Davis around the neck and tries to pull
him back. Father Davis still won't let go of Summer.
Darius tries to choke him but the priest exerts even more
pressure on Summer's neck. Someone will be choked first.
Summer is closer to her final breath. Darius channels all
his remaining energy into the effort... Veins stand out with
the effort. He squeeze and then suddenly twists to the left
with a final explosion of energy.
Father Davis suddenly collapses like a rag doll and falls
dead with a snapped neck. Summer sinks to the ground and
lays still. Darius rushes to her and leans down. He's
afraid she's dead... But then she slowly opens her eyes and
takes a breath. She's alive.
Rain and Fiona limp up to them, having dispatched the last
man. They help Summer rise and embrace her.
AT THE EDGE OF THE CLEARING
A DARK FIGURE is hiding behind a tree. It's hard to make
out who he is. He glances at Father Davis lying dead and
then at the Osgoods. His eyes are pools of rage and
frustration. He chokes back a SOB but makes no move towards
them.
Instead he retreats into the woods and disappears.
101.
EXT. OSGOOD'S SALEM HOUSE - LATER
Darius is giving his statement to a POLICE OFFICER. Around
him are half a dozen squad cars and ambulances.
The officer questioning Darius closes his notebook and walks
away. Darius turns and watches Rain, Summer and Fiona
heading back to the house after being tended by EMTs.
They're very upset; struggling to hold their emotions in
check. The rest of the WITCHES are being carted off to
hospitals or the morgue. The coven has suffered several
fatalities.
Rain stops as Darius approaches her. She says something to
him. He nods. Together they head to the front door where
Summer and Fiona are about to enter. They are surprised to
see Darius accompanying her but are resigned to the fact.
They all enter the house and close the door behind them.
EXT. OSGOOD'S SALEM HOUSE - MORNING
There is no evidence of the squad cars and ambulances from
the night before. The lawn is perspiring from the morning
dew. The house looks idyllic and peaceful.
FIONA (O.S.)
I can make you more pancakes if you like?
INT. OSGOOD'S SALEM HOUSE - KITCHEN - CONTINUOUS
Darius has joined Rain, Summer and Fiona for breakfast.
They're seated around a table. Shafts of sunlight are
pouring through the windows casting everybody in an ethereal
glow.
Black is lapping milk from a bowl on the floor.
Fiona pours Darius a cup of coffee and takes a seat.
DARIUS
(shaking his head)
I couldn't eat another bite. Thank you.
You shouldn't be going to such lengths
after what you went through last night.
All three women had sustained injuries last night. Some
nicks and bruises are still visible, but they've already
started to heal. They look refreshed and startlingly
beautiful. Darius, in contrast, is still nursing aches and
bruises, but nothing serious.
SUMMER
I can't speak for mother or Rain, but I
for one have had enough excitement for a
lifetime!
102.
DARIUS
You don't look none the worse for the
wear.
(beat)
Of course, by now, I should have
expected nothing less. I had my
suspicions about you three ladies -- but
I had no idea how remarkable you really
are. It must be amazing to be able to
fly?
SUMMER
Oh, I can show you a few other tricks too.
Summer suddenly points to a PAN OF SAUSAGES AND A SPOON on
the stove. They levitate over to Darius and hangs near his
plate.
SUMMMER (CONT'D)
(smiling mischeviously)
More sausages?
FIONA
(outraged)
Summer, stop it this instant!
Summmer laughs and levitates the pan and spoon back to the
oven. Darius sits there stunned.
FIONA
(points to Summer)
This one's antics never stop!
(to Darius)
I'm so sorry about this.
DARIUS
There's nothing to be sorry about.
She's reaffirmed everything.
FIONA
I want to express my deepest gratitude
for you discretion last night, Mr. Banks...
Darius takes a slow sip of his coffee and regards all three
women with a critical eye.
DARIUS
I'm not in the habit of filing
inaccurate reports. I think some
explanations are in order. You're all
witches, aren't you?
Fiona takes a moment to gather her thoughts before she speaks.
103.
FIONA
(passionate)
We can trace our roots back to the Salem
witch trials of 1692. There is a
graveyard on this property where some of
the victims of that outrage are buried.
We are direct descendants of an Osgood
who was among them. Many of those who
were hanged were indeed witches, but
they had committed no crimes. Our kind
have been persecuted for hundreds of
years. There is no form of death or
violence that witches have not met. We
have been hanged, burned alive,
crucified, beheaded and drowned. We
have been reviled and tortured for
centuries!
SUMMER
They've blamed us for everything under
the sun. In the olden days, they
accused us of blighting crops and making
cow's milk turn sour in the udder! Can
you believe that?
RAIN
If the world were do discover that
witches existed, there would be hysteria.
Contrary to popular belief, we don't
practice black magic or have a pact with
the devil.
FIONA
I've always warned my daughters to keep
their talents hidden whenever possible.
Unfortunately, circumstances have
prevented them from doing so.
DARIUS
This is... crazy. I can't believe it.
You're some kind of master race.
SUMMER
(glibly)
I've always preferred the term
"genetically enhanced superwoman."
We're not like the Halloween witches,
you know? We don't wear pointy hats and
fly around on broomsticks.
DARIUS
But you can perform magic. That's
impossible.
104.
RAIN
Magic does exist. It can be explained
by science. It's laws are as valid as
those of physics.
FIONA
Mr. Bank, we're creatures of flesh and
blood no different from you. If you cut
us, we bleed. If you shoot us, we can
die. We are not immortal.
DARIUS
But you have... powers.
FIONA
Human beings have the capacity for
extraordinary things. We only exercise
a fraction of our true potential. Our
genetic makeup determines who we are...
what we can be. Witches -- for lack of
a better term -- are genetically different.
DARIUS
You're DNA is different.
Fiona nods.
DARIUS (CONT'D)
Are there many of you?
FIONA
(shakes her head sadly)
There are only a handful of us left. A
few hundred in the whole world. Each
generation there are fewer and fewer
daughters of the true blood born. I
gave birth to twins, both possessing the
talent. My daughters are rare birds.
I've striven my whole life to protect
them, because despite their many
talents, there are many out there who
would fail to appreciate their
differences...
(looks directly at Darius)
What happened to us last night, could
only be the beginning. If word got out
as to what we really are, the world
would loathe and detest us as evil
heretics. They would kill us.
EXT. OSGOOD'S SALEM HOUSE - GARDEN - DAY
Rain and Darius walk out of the back of the house into a
lush garden. There's a pond with goldfish. A trellis and
well-manicured climbing roses. Peonies and lilies. Birds
are chirping in the trees. The sun's climbing into the sky,
drying out the morning dew. It's an idyllic setting.
105.
Rain leads Darius to a bench under the shade of a willow.
She looks very sober.
RAIN
I think I should tell you about Jason
Blount...
Darius nods in silence.
RAIN (CONT.)
My parents have been searching for the
right match for Summer and I for years.
Like any girl we've always dreamt about
Prince Charming coming along and
sweeping us off our feet... but our
choices have always been limited.
(beat)
As my mother mentioned, there are very
few witches left. Our number one
priority has always been self-
preservation. We don't want to die out
as a race.
(beat)
If a witch were to mate with a normal
male, there are no guarantees that the
offspring will possess the talent, but
there is a way to mitigate that
uncertainty. If one of us were to mate
with a man with a certain genetic trait...
Pieces are falling into place in Darius' mind.
DARIUS
DNA.
RAIN
(nods)
Jason Blount was a regular blood donor.
Without getting into the details, let's
just say that my father was able to
identify his...
(winces)
... genetic compatibility with me. As a
man he was far from ideal, but someone
with his DNA is very rare. It took
years to find him.
(beat)
My mother has always made a point to
remind us of our heritage and our duties.
I felt a certain... obligation to
acquaint myself with Jason.
(beat)
Jason and I dated for a few months. He
was a disturbed man.
106.
RAIN (CONT'D)
He had so much anger bottled up inside
of him. I disliked him immediately, but
I couldn't... I didn't want to let my
parent's down. But he was so abusive.
I couldn't --
Rain breaks down in tears. Darius instantly reaches over to
comfort her. She doesn't pull away and sobs in his arms for
a while.
Rain finally manages to compose herself.
RAIN (CONT'D)
Jason came over that night to our shop
very drunk. He... tried to rape me...
started beating me when I resisted.
I -- I couldn't take it anymore. He
tried to choke me to death. I lost
control and pushed him back from me with
my... my powers. I think Black tried to
defend me. But Jason came at me again...
I pushed him away with all my powers.
He --
(crying again)
Darius I didn't mean to kill him! You
have to believe me!
Darius wipes tears away from Rain's eyes with his fingers.
DARIUS
It's all right. I believe you. I
believe every word.
RAIN
(grateful)
Thank you. You don't know how much that
means to me...
(beat)
Summer only went out with Roger Davis
because he had the right DNA. But he
was as bad as Jason. Summer didn't mean
to kill Roger. It was self-defense.
Greg Davis had been brain washing Roger
against us for months. He tried to kill
her with a knife when he found out that
she was a witch. My sister had no choice.
Darius accepts this explanation as well. He sees no hint of
deceit in Rain. He knows she's being totally honest with him.
DARIUS
You danced with these devils because
they had the right DNA.
(shakes his head)
Unbelievable. Maybe every guy who has
this gene is a scumbag.
107.
Rain looks directly at Darius.
RAIN
Not everybody.
INT. OSGOOD'S SALEM HOUSE - SECOND FLOOR - CONTINUOUS
Fiona Osgood is carefully holding back the curtains, spying
on Darius and Rain below in the garden. She's watched the
entire exchange.
SUMMER (O.S.)
Mother, what are you doing?
Startled, Fiona turns to see Summer.
FIONA
(holds a finger to
her lips)
Shhh!
Summer creeps up to the window and looks down to see Darius
reach out to Rain.
SUMMER
This is getting interesting...
EXT. GARDEN - CONTINUOUS
Rain comes into Darius' arms. They kiss passionately.
INT. OSGOOD'S SALEM HOUSE - SECOND FLOOR - CONTINUOUS
Summer and Fiona turn away from the window. Summer is
beaming. It's hard to tell whether Fiona's upset. Her
expression is enigmatic. She strides over to the phone on
the night stand and starts to dial a number.
INT. OSGOOD'S 5TH AVENUE APARTMENT - WARRICK'S OFFICE -
CONTINUOUS
The phone RINGS.
Warren is busy pouring over financial statements.
The phone RINGS again.
Warrick glances at the phone with scorn. He doesn't like
his work to be interrupted.
Warrick debates whether to pick it up.
The phone RINGS a third time. Warrick snatches it and
brings it to his ears.
108.
WARRICK
(abrupt)
Hello?
Warrick listens; his frown becomes a smile.
WARRICK
Darling, how --
(listens, the frown returns)
Go on.
EXT. OSGOOD'S SALEM HOUSE - DUSK
A black Mercedes with tinted windows pulls into the driveway.
INT. OSGOOD'S SALEM HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS
Darius is seated with Rain, Summer and Fiona. They all turn
as the doorbell RINGS.
Fiona instantly gets up as if she's been expecting someone
and answers the door.
Warrick Dane steps inside. His large form fills the space
like a giant.
Darius looks surprised. He and Warrick exchange looks.
Warrick smiles.
INT. OSGOOD'S SALEM HOUSE - DINING ROOM - NIGHT
Darius is seated at the dinner table with the Osgoods.
Warrick sits at the head of the table and takes a bite of
his meal.
WARRICK
(to Fiona)
Darling, considering the circumstances,
you've out done yourself with dinner
today. I'm glad I drove all the way
here today.
Fiona glances at Darius.
FIONA
We had company today. I wanted to set a
proper table.
DARIUS
(to Warrick)
I find it hard to believe that you would
come because of a good meal...
considering what happened last night.
109.
WARRICK
Absolutely. Fiona should have called me
last night. Even though the women at
this table are fully capable --
DARIUS
More so than some.
WARRICK
(smiles)
Yes, it seems that you finally know
their little secret.
(beat)
But there's a reason why Fiona pressed
you to stay for dinner with us.
(pushes back his seat
and rises)
Detective Banks, would you do me the
courtesy of taking a walk with me? I
have a few things I'd like to discuss
with you.
Darius exchanges a brief look with Rain. Is that concern on
her face?
But Warrick has a warm expression on his face - almost too
sweet. Darius reluctantly rises. With a final glance at
Rain, he follows Warrick into...
THE LIVING ROOM
DARIUS
Let me grab my jacket.
WARRICK
It's not cold outside.
DARIUS
I like to stay warm.
Warrick shrugs and heads for the door. Darius goes to the
coat closet and grabs his jacket. With his back to Warrick,
he checks the inside pocket. There's a GUN peeking out. He
quickly dons the jacket just as Rain enters the room.
Darius glances back at her and follows Warrick outside.
EXT. OSGOOD'S SALEM HOUSE - GARDEN - CONTINUOUS
Warrick starts to lead Darius past the place where he and
Rain had spoken this morning.
DARIUS
Do you want to talk here?
WARRICK
(shakes his head)
I'd like to show you something first.
110.
Warrick points to a trail leading away from the garden into
the woods.
WARRICK (CONT.)
If you'll follow me.
Darius is reluctant, but follows Warrick into the woods.
EXT. VINEYARDS - CONTINUOUS
It's dark. The moon is obscured above the tree branches.
DARIUS
(impatient)
How much further, Mr. Dane?
Warrick is only a few spaces in front of Darius.
WARRICK
We're almost here.
Warrick follows a turn in the path and disappears.
Darius follows him and steps out into...
A GRAVEYARD
It's the same graveyard Darius had followed the coven of
witches through the night before. Darius is startled to see
that there are a FIVE FRESHLY DUG GRAVES that had not been
there the night before.
Warrick approaches one of the graves and beckons to Darius.
Darius hesitates.
WARRICK
(smiling)
Are you nervous about something, Mr.
Banks?
DARIUS
What did you want to talk about?
WARRICK
(beckons again)
If you'll come over here, I'll tell you.
Darius pulls the chain on his jacket down and walks up to
Warrick.
DARIUS
(re: graves)
These are freshly dug.
111.
WARRICK
Fiona called the hospital this morning.
She found out that there were four
fatalities and arranged this.
Darius is confused. Warrick clarifies.
WARRICK(CONT'D)
Last night four members of Fiona's coven
were murdered. They will all be buried
here in a place of honor.
DARIUS
There's five new graves.
Warrick takes a step forward. Darius takes a step back and
puts his hand to his jacket.
WARRICK
Mr. Banks. Your gun would do very
little good against me.
Darius takes his gun out anyway and points it at Warrick.
DARIUS
(demands)
What do you want?
Warrick laughs. The sound stabs through the cold night air.
Warrick suddenly motions with his hand. The gun flies
through the air from Darius' hand into his own.
Darius is completely startled. Warrick is now pointing the
gun at him.
WARRICK
Another coven member is not expected to
make it. The fifth grave is for her.
(holds out the gun to Darius)
Please take this back. I mean you no harm.
Darius takes the gun back, visibly relieved.
Warrick walks up to an older grave. He motions to Darius,
who reluctantly comes over.
The headstone says MARY OSGOOD.
WARRICK
Mary was a descendant of Fiona. She was
killed during the Salem witch trials.
(motions to the
freshly dug graves)
Too many witches are dying. My
daughters could have met the same fate.
Fiona told me about what you did last
night. I owe you a great debt.
112.
Darius accepts the gratitude silently.
WARRICK (CONT.)
Fiona and I have always striven to
protect our daughters in every way we can.
DARIUS
Including murder?
Warrick looks sharply at Darius.
DARIUS (CONT.)
Detectives Ratner and Spazik were
assigned to investigate your daughters
and they died under suspicious
circumstances. That scaffolding
collapsed on top of them when it
shouldn't have.
Darius stares accusingly at Warrick.
WARRICK
And you've somehow connected the dots to
me?
DARIUS
A witness saw a black Mercedes with
tinted windows... the same make of the
car you drive. I don't know if you're a
witch, but you obviously have the power
to... move things by force.
WARRICK
I prefer the term warlock, Mr. Banks.
DARIUS
(demands)
Did you kill them?
WARRICK
Did you know that the detectives broke
into my daughters' place and stole
pictures of them? These pictures were
taken innocently and revealed that they
are witches. Your two fine detectives
tried to blackmail me for money with them!
Darius is surprised by the revelation, but he doesn't back
down.
DARIUS
It doesn't justify murder.
113.
WARRICK
It's my prerogative to protect my family!
(sighs tiredly)
I didn't bring you out here to argue
with you. I'd like to speak to about
Rain for a moment, if I could?
DARIUS
(curious)
Go ahead.
WARRICK
My wife and I have always been concerned
about the men my daughters have dated --
DARIUS
Concerned?
(sneers)
You were only concerned that these men
had the right DNA! You talk about
protecting your daughters, but you never
even protected them from the abusive
assholes that you foisted on them, did
you?
Warrick winces from the tongue lashing because he knows
there's truth to Darius' words.
WARRICK
There are some sacrifices that had to be
made for the survival of the species.
Can't you understand that?
(emotional)
It tore my heart out that those horrible
men had to be the ones. But... I... we
really had no choice...
(beat)
Mr. Banks, Fiona has told me of your
interest in Rain. I believe it's mutual.
You're a good man. I approve --
DARIUS
Of course you approve! I have the right
DNA. That's all you really care about!
WARRICK
You can't possibly understand the
potential that you have...
Darius looks confused.
WARRICK (CONT.)
You're genetic makeup makes you even
rarer than a witch. You and I are part
of an incredibly select group.
114.
DARIUS
I -- I don't have any powers! I'm not a
warlock!
WARRICK
Some of the men with our DNA type have
the potential to become one. Don't you
understand how powerful you can become?
Fiona helped me to unlock my potential.
Rain can do the same for you. You and
she --
Warrick suddenly whips his neck around in the direction of
the house.
WARRICK
Fiona?
Warrick cocks his ears to listen.
WARRICK (CONT'D)
(to Darius)
They're in trouble!
In the next instant Warrick is running back towards the house.
Darius is uncertain what is going on but starts to run after
him.
EXT. WOODS - CONTINUOUS
Darius is running at full speed, but he can't keep up with
Warrick who is incredibly fast and is not even visible on
the trail ahead.
Suddenly a BURST of gunfire RIPS through the night from the
direction of the Osgood house.
Darius tries to run faster.
EXT. OSGOOD'S SALEM HOUSE - GARDEN - LATER
Darius finally catches up to Warrick who has stopped at the
edge of woods bordering the garden...
Darius doesn't know why he's stopped but everything falls
into place when he reaches him.
The house is completely on fire. Some type of smoke bomb
has been thrown in through a busted window. There is the
strong smell of gasoline in the air. All the shrubbery and
vines around the house are on fire as well. It's clearly
arson.
The Osgood women are trying to get out through the back
door. They are choking from the smoke. Fiona steps outside
first. There is a BURST of gunfire from somewhere.
115.
Fiona CRIES out as a bullet strikes her in the chest. She
collapses. Her daughters quickly pull her back inside.
Another BURST of gunfire rips through the door and shatters
glass. Somebody has taken a post somewhere and is taking
shots with an automatic weapon.
Warrick is livid with rage. He turns to Darius. Motions
with his hands to go and find the hidden gunman. He points
to the house. He's going to try and get inside.
Darius nods and starts to walk back into the woods to circle
around.
Warrick starts to run towards the house, dodging bullets.
EXT. WOODS - CONTINUOUS
Darius has left the path and is making his way towards the
source of the gunfire.
After a few hundred feet he catches a FLASH of movement
behind a huge oak and approaches cautiously...
There is another BURST of gunfire from the spot towards the
house. The muzzle flame highlights a HOODED FIGURE.
Darius is within ten feet of the GUNMAN. He comes at him
from behind with his gun out...
The CRACK of a branch gives him away.
The gunman turns and opens fire...
Darius jumps and rolls...
Barely dodges a torrent of bullets.
He recovers his feet and tries to run into the woods.
Almost makes it unscathed, when a bullet grazes his left arm.
Darius GRUNTS in pain but keeps running...
EXT. WOODS - MOMENTS LATER
Darius is catching his breath behind a tree. He's bleeding
from his arm, but it's a shallow wound. He's waiting and
watching for the gunman who he'd expected to come after him.
The RAT TAT TAT of gunfire comes from the house, followed by
female screaming.
The gunman's in the house.
Darius starts to run towards it.
116.
EXT. OSGOOD'S SALEM HOUSE - GARDEN - CONTINUOUS
Darius rushes out of the woods and nearly gets singed as
burning pieces of debris fly from the house. The structure
is completely engulphed in flames.
Ignoring the danger, he rushes towards the backdoor... only
to see that part of the house collapse right in front of him.
Undeterred, he runs towards the front of the house...
EXT. OSGOOD'S SALEM HOUSE - FRONT
Everything is on fire here too. Darius covers his nose and
mouth with his hand. The smoke and smell of kerosene is
overwhelming. He dodges debris and makes it to the front
door. He sees that the door has been wedged shut with a
long piece of wood. Tries to kick it in, but it's solidly
wedged. Repeated kicks finally do the job.
There's more gunfire and screams from inside.
Darius throws caution to the wind and rushes inside...
INT. OSGOOD'S SALEM HOUSE - CONTINUOUS
The smoke is thick. It's drawn out most of the air. Darius
struggles to breathe. He catches MOVEMENT at the top of the
stairs and makes his way there...
And nearly stumbles over a BODY on the floor.
It's Fiona Osgood.
Darius goes to his knees on the floor.
Fiona's lays dead in a pool of her own blood. Blood is
still seeping out of the gunshot wound to her chest. Black
the cat is pitifully nudging her to awake.
Darius shoos him away. The cat reluctantly disappears
towards the front door.
Darius turns at the sound of gunfire and screams coming from
upstairs. He sees the HOODED FIGURE at the top landing and
starts to shoot at him. The figure retreats down the
hallway. Darius leaps up the stairs after him... reaches
the top... and rolls away in time to avoid a hail of
bullets... then comes back up and shoots...
There is a GRUNT of pain from the end of the hallway. He's
hit someone. Darius rushes down the smoke-filled hallway...
And barely avoids falling timbers as parts of the roof start
to cave in.
117.
Cinders and sparks fly singing Darius. He's dropped his
gun... desperately struggles to locate it... and then
watches it drop through a hole in the floor.
Darius gives up on it. He somehow pushes his way through
the flames and debris even as the house falling apart around
him. He takes a turn in the hallway and comes to a stop.
Rain and Summer have been corralled into a corner. Warrick
is staunchly standing in front trying to protect them. But
he's been hit. Blood is seeping from his chest. He's
struggling to remain on his feet.
The gunman has trapped them and is holding a smoking machine
gun at them.
The gunman turns as Darius approaches.
Darius is shocked to see that it's Mayor Davis. He's
sustained a gunshot to his arm, but has a crazed look about
him. He's bent on destruction but cogent enough to see that
Darius is unarmed.
Warrick takes that instant to react. He motions with his
hands and tries to wrest the machine gun away from the mayor
with his telekenetic powers.
The gun goes flying through a hallway window. Startled, the
mayor has enough composure to pull out a KNIFE, rushes
Warrick... and manages to graze his neck.
The mayor and Warrick become locked in a hand-to-hand
struggle. Darius rushes forward to help, but Warrick
motions him away and indicates the horrified girls.
WARRICK
Get them out of here!
Warrick and the mayor crash against a door... which gives
way. They fall through and disappear into the smoke and
flames.
More pieces of the house are coming down. The whole place
will collapse in a few minutes. Darius makes a quick
decision. There is no time to help Warrick and rescue the
girls too. He rushes towards Rain and Summer and takes
their arms.
They both resist. They're crying and won't abandon their
father.
DARIUS
It's too late!
Darius shakes the girls.
118.
DARIUS (CONT.)
There's no --
Another part of the roof collapses in a WHOOSH of flame and
debris. The girls react to this and surrender to Darius'
will. They start to make their way back down the hallway
and disappear into the smoke and flames.
EXT. OSGOOD'S SALEM HOUSE - FRONT - LATER
Darius, Rain and Summer manage to rush out through the front
door seconds before the entire house CRASHES down in flames.
The girls scream out in horror. Darius takes them in his
arms and lets them cry their hearts out.
EXT. CENTRAL PARK - DAY
SUPER: "ONE YEAR LATER"
There is the sweet sound of laughter.
A COUPLE comes around the bend in the path.
They reveal themselves to be Summer and Phil Parker. After
Darius' introduction, they've become a couple.
Parker whispers something into Summer's ear. She blushes
and laughs again.
A STROLLER comes around the bend. The couple pushing it are
Darius and Rain. Married for about a year, they're out in
the park with their child.
A BABY RATTLE suddenly floats up into the air from the
stroller.
Darius and Rain come to an immediate halt and look upon
their daughter with shocked surprise.
The BABY smiles and GIGGLES up at her parents. She reaches
out and the rattle gently floats into her hands.
Darius and Rain look at each other... and smile.
Their daughter's a witch!
FADE OUT
THE END.
