INT. RESTAURANT. BALLROOM - NIGHT - FLASHBACK
The ballroom is roaring is filled with the SOUND
of a live band. JACK and SARAH are dancing
merrily along with several other upper class
doctor couples to classic ballroom tunes.
SARAH
I hate these things. They're so boring.
JACK
Me too, I'm not even wearing clean
underwear.
SARAH
I'm not even wearing any.
Jack eyes her gaze. He motions with his head to
her to go to the exit.
They abruptly make their way to exit, but she
stumbles a bit. He catches her as she falls.
His hand is caught underneath her as they both
take a tumble.
JACK
Are you ok?
His wife winces in pain as she gets back to her
feet.
SARAH
I'm, I'm ok.
Jack isn't fooled and gets back up.
JACK
Ok? Is it your back again?
She hesitates and nods.
JACK
We'll get this checked out first thing
in the morning.
SARAH
I said it was nothing. I can take care
of myself. I'm a big girl.
A crowd starts to form around them in concern as
the MUSIC STOPS. Jack decides to cut the tension
with a joke.
JACK
Where's a good doctor when you need one
right?
Everyone laughs and the MUSIC STARTS back up.
Jack shakes his hand a bit.
SARAH
Are you ok?
JACK
It's nothing and I'm the doctor here.
They both smile playfully and start to dance
again.
SARAH
Excuse me.
JACK
It's best if we take you to a hospital.
I just want to be sure.
SARAH
Sure, but nothing is wrong. You're not
going to last till old age if you worry
about everything.
JACK
And you won't last if you break everything
and don't get it looked at.
SARAH
Sheesh, I should have gone to medical
school. Then maybe you would believed
me.
Jack forcefully leans in and dips her.
JACK
Yes, then I would've. Until then, I'm
the boss.
She rolls her eyes and notices a man dancing with
his wife eying Sarah. She looks at him with a
raised eyebrow.
JACK (CONT'D)
I saw that. She's all right sir. She's
just recovering from her anal sphincter
operation.
The man grimaces in horror and moves with his wife
away. Sarah and Jack both have a good laugh.
EXT. BEACH. CLEARING - DAY
CHARLIE and HURLEY are engaged in a classic chess
struggle. The board is made of handcarved wooden
men that they both seem to be proud of.
Charlie slams his rook down to a new position
shattering the pieces on the board. He jumps up
with his arms raised.
Hurley almost slips off his makeshift wooden
chair.
CHARLIE
Check Mate!
Charlie hesitates for a moment in celebrating
further by examining the board again and then
jumps up.
CHARLIE (CONT'D)
Yes! Check Mate! I win.
HURLEY
Jesus. You don't have to rub it in.
CHARLIE
But I'm the first island tournament
champion. I have to show my
accomplishment somehow.
HURLEY
Yes, but we were the only people in the
tournament.
Charlie is brimming with excitement.
CHARLIE
We need a way to document this.
SAWYER darts after a boar in the distance.
Charlie looks at him for a moment. Hurley rolls
his eyes.
HURLEY
Here we go.
CHARLIE
We need like an island newspaper or
something to record all our exciting
events like when Sawyer finally catches
that bloody pig.
HURLEY
I think we're all out of
A figure walks out of the brush with a machete in
hand eying the chess players. Blood is dripping
down the blade.
It's ROUSSEAU.
Hurley and Charlie jump up in shock.
LOCKE races to Rousseau with wooden oar cocked
back as she approaches Charlie.
She falls in exhaustion and vomits. Locke
releases his grip.
INT. HATCH - DAY
JACK props Rousseau up on a bed with the help of
Charlie, SAYID, and KATE.
A mosquito bites Charlie. He slaps it dead.
JACK
Don't move her.
Jack examines her with a stethoscope. He feels
her abdomen and stops at her spleen.
KATE
What's wrong with her?
JACK
Malaria probably.
Jack riffles through the medical supplies, but
can't seem to find what he needs. He looks at
Kate and hesitates.
JACK (CONT'D)
We're out of antibiotics. She'll die
from malaria, then maybe the rest of us
too.
JACK (CONT'D)
With all of these mosquitoes, we'll be
infected in a week.
They all look at Charlie itching his mosquito
bite.
CHARLIE
What?
Rousseau leans into Charlie's ear. Charlie tries
to put her back down.
CHARLIE
Don't get up, doctor's orders.
She whispers something into his ear and collapses.
INT. HATCH - DAY
Jack is frustrated and talks it over with Kate,
and Charlie.
JACK
I don't know what else to do. We could
treat people's symptoms, but we're all
in danger.
CHARLIE
She said there are some more drugs along
a path or something. That her son was
there.
Everybody stares at Charlie with their eyes
raised, yet unconvinced.
JACK
Sounds kind of delusional. She might
have been hallucinating out of shock
from the Malaria.
KATE
Would be worth a look. If her son
really is there we should look for him.
JACK
Yeah, I guess so, but remember the last
time we went looking for her child.
CHARLIE
She said it's down the river.
JACK
She told you where it was then?
CHARLIE
Yeah, just before she passed out.
JACK
Ok, you lead. We better get the canoe
then.

EXT. BEACH. CLEARING - DAY
Jack and Kate are immersed in their conversation
trying hard not to look at LOCKE. Locke is near
the forest's edge working on some woodcarvings.
JACK
I think you better go ask Locke without
me. He doesn't exactly trust me.
Kate smiles.
KATE
Are you losing your sway with the
troops?
JACK
Just go do it. Don't tell him I'm
coming.
Charlie is sitting next to Hurley nearby. Charlie
is not so enthused anymore.
He tries to draw a picture of Claire in the sand
with a stick.
CHARLIE
I don't know how to talk to Claire.
HURLEY
Dude, she hates you. Let it go.
CHARLIE
We really had something going.
Kate walks up and yanks Charlie by the hand
flinging toward the forest entry. Charlie tries
his best to compose himself and turns to Hurley.
CHARLIE (CONT'D)
I'll see you later! Hey. What are you
doing?
KATE
Locke likes you right? The whole drug
thing?
Charlie gets a surprised look on his face.
CHARLIE
So?
KATE
Just buddy up with Locke and get him to
give us his canoe.
CHARLIE
What's in it for me?
Kate shakes her head in disdain.
KATE
A future. Have you been hanging out
with Sawyer or something?
Kate holds his arm tighter.
CHARLIE
Just asking. Sheesh.
EXT. FOREST - DAY
Charlie and Kate approach Locke and JIN as they
sand off the edge of Locke's newly minted canoe
that is propped up. Locke sees them coming and shakes
his head.
LOCKE
You're not getting this I need it to do
some fishing. Just me and the ocean.
KATE
Listen, Rousseau is dying. We need to
find her some medicine. Her son might
be out there too.
Locke chuckles.
LOCKE
Her son too? Forget, what she's done?
I think you need to get your priorities
in order.
KATE
If we don't get some medicine the next
person will die too. You want that
happening?
LOCKE
Did the good doctor put you up to this?
He still soar that I don't let him into
my deepest darkest secrets?
Kate mumbles to herself realizing it is futile.
Charlie lights up.
CHARLIE
Why don't you help Sawyer catch that
boar for food and we will use your
canoe.
LOCKE
I can handle that.
Jin motions that he wants to come. Kate puts up
her hands.
KATE
No, we already have enough.
Kate is stunned, it actually worked. Charlie goes
to take the canoe and it falls over on him.
LOCKE
You break it you buy it.
INT. HOSPITAL. MRI ROOM - DAY - FLASHBACK
Sarah is laying in a bed trying to daydream while
the whistling of the monitor's make noise. Jack
is seated next to her holding her hand.
He winces in pain and pulls his hand away.
JACK
It'll be ok. You'll see.
She grins.
SARAH
Are you talking about me or you? You
should get that looked at.
JACK
Don't start that again. I hate waiting
for doctors.
They both have a chuckle. A young African
American doctor who looks like he operates a surf
shop, SYDNEY, strides in confidently with a chart ready
in hand.
SYDNEY
Unfortunately due to complications from
her fall, we've got to repair a slipped
disc that hadn't healed properly since
your surgery.
JACK
Are you saying I had something to do
with this?
Sydney glances at Jack, but ignores his comments.
SYDNEY
Your condition will deteriorate unless
surgery is done.
SARAH
Can my husband do it? He's saved me
before.
She rubs Jack's back and looks into his eyes.
SYDNEY
I'm sorry, but that'd be unethical.
SARAH
Ok, just give me the forms.
Sydney hands some forms to look over.
Jack gets startled at a the RUMBLING of the
intercom.
NURSE
Dr. Jack Shepard to Surgery Room 2. Dr.
Jack Shepard to Surgery Room 2.
JACK
I'll be back honey, I've got some work
to do.
INT. HOSPITAL. PHARMACY - DAY - FLASHBACK
A pharmacist, GWEN, an old lady in her fifties, is
filling pills and is whistling away. Jack waits
at the counter.
GWEN
What can I do for you?
She obviously has a thing for Jack.
JACK
I'm going to need 20 pills of Vicodin?
Gwen retreats to find the prescription while Jack takes
out a prescription pad.
He fills out the top and gets to the signature
line.
He looks up at her.
He looks at his watch.
He looks around and hesitates...
and then writes his dad's name on the signature line.
He can't believe what he's done.
Gwen returns and Jack hands her the slip. Jack waits
for any sign of alarm,
It doesn't come.
GWEN
This is from your dad right?
Jack tries to joke to hide his nervousness.
JACK
Of course. What'd you think? I can't
write my own prescription, I'd lose my
license.
Jack has a look of relief as the pharmacist
doesn't suspect a thing. She's too busy watching
him walk away to care.
Jack opens up the bottle at a nearby water
fountain and slams a few pills down his throat
forgetting about the water.
INT. HOSPITAL. OPERATING ROOM - DAY - FLASHBACK
Jack is in an operating with several attendees and
a young man ready to be operated on.
JACK
Scalpel.
An attendee hands one to him. Jack grips it
firmly and squeezes a few times. He hesitates to
slice into his patient.
He looks up to see if they know what is going on.
The attendees look at each other.
He regains his nerve and slices into him.
EXT. BEACH. CLEARING - DAY
Sawyer stands ready for something.
He sees a boar.
Sawyer chases after the boar diving into the sand
and catches its foot. It's the same boar that plagued
him before, but he won't repeat the same mistake.
SAWYER
You're not going to get off easy this
time.
It stutters for a second and...
It tears from Sawyer's grip.
Sawyer puts his head in the sand in agony.
Sawyer gets back up and heads for the forest.
EXT. FOREST - DAY
Sawyer is hoping to bait the boar out. He's
walking along a dirt path. He's ready this time with
two handguns, one in each hand.
SAWYER
Here, piggy, piggy.
The boar responds and runs out of some brush.
Sawyer takes out his dual 9mm handguns.
He takes aim and smiles menacingly.
SHOTS RING out.
The boar lays motionless and bloody.
Locke, walking by, sees this and is amused.
Sawyer's all out of friends so he decides to help.
LOCKE
Need a hand?
SAWYER
Not a hand, a skewer.
Sawyer looks down at the boar pleased with
himself.
SAWYER
I always did want to go John Woo on that
boar.
Locke looks puzzled. Sawyer thinks Locke must be
stupid and shakes his head.
LOCKE
You should have killed it before when
you had the chance.
SAWYER
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
LOCKE
So are you going to eat that thing or
what?
Sawyer gets a surprised look on his face.
SAWYER
Sounds like a deal old man it has been
slim pickings around here recently.
LOCKE
Well I suggest we get a move on it'll
take awhile. Then we can have a nice
dinner for all of us.
Sawyer grows a grin.
SAWYER
I got a better idea. Are you ready for
some football?
LOCKE
In my younger days.
SAWYER
I'm going to skin him and we'll get to
play a merry little game of football on
him.
Sawyer realizes something as Locke starts to walk
away.
SAWYER
Hey, you know how to skin a hide and sew
it together?
LOCKE
Matter of fact I do. Is that a request
or an order?
SAWYER
Are you going to make me beg old man I
just want to play some football.
LOCKE
Just say the word.
Sawyer gets upset and hesitates. Locke starts to
walk away.
SAWYER
Please?
EXT. FOREST - DAY
Charlie, Sayid, Kate and Jack walking along an
overgrown path searching for the river. They are
all armed. They are without a clue of where they
are headed except Charlie.
Sayid and Jack hold the two canoes over their
heads while Charlie Guides them. They all carry
backpacks.
Jack has lost patience with Charlie in the hot
jungle and makes an angry face.
JACK
Did Rousseau say exactly where this river
was?
CHARLIE
Yeah, she said it starts near a special
marker.
Kate forgets her tact and puts her hands on her
hips.
KATE
What the hell is that supposed to mean?
Charlie stops and stares at something in the
distance.
He points at it and turns to Kate almost jumping
up and down.
CHARLIE
That's what it means.
Kate stops and sees what Charlie is looking at.
Jack sees it too, but the weight of the canoe
doesn't let his excitement get the better of him.
Charlie's enjoying the hunt way too much.
Jack puts the canoe down with a thud seeing a
large pentagonal green stone.
It is built into a recess of a tree trunk. It has
some Egyptian hieroglyphics similar to that of the
hatch.
KATE
What the hell is that thing?
Jack edges close to the stone cautiously.
He brushes some of the vines from it.
SAYID
I don't know if that is a good thing
Jack.
Jack's necklace jumps into the air towards the
tablet's magnetism.
He tries to clear the tablet of brush, but his
hand HISSES as he is burnt by the stone.
He immediately recoils onto the ground.
It's red hot.
Sayid takes a bandage from his pocket and
hurriedly wraps Jack's hand in it while Kate props
him up on the ground.
Jack's hand is really hurt, but it doesn't seem to
bother him. He flexes it in the bandages.
JACK
Thanks Sayid. What the hell is that
thing?
Sayid takes a deep look at the tablet.
SAYID
These are some of the same hieroglyphics
that our hatch computer produces when it
counts down.
He looks back at the group in astonishment.
SAYID
Perhaps there is some sort of
connection?
CHARLIE
I don't know, but the river entrance is
right over there. I'm all for you
healing, but we better get a move on.
Charlie points to an opening in the brush where
the sun peaks through. Kate just shakes her head
in disgust at Charlie.
JACK
I know we should.
Kate props Jack up and they both regain control of
their canoe and make their way to the river's
center.
The river is a peaceful relief to the travelers,
but rumbles unbeknownst to them all in a
shattering waterfall hundreds of meters away.

EXT. RIVER - DAY
Sayid and Charlie straggle in their canoe behind
Kate and Jack. They are rowing down a winding
river with brush draping over the banks. The
river calmly RUMBLES as they make their way down
it.
Jack paddles in front of Kate. Jack pulls a leaf
from Kate's hair.
Charlie looks at Sayid and feigns vomiting. Sayid smiles
and keeps paddling.
Kate's stomach roars as she clutches it.
JACK
Did you say something?
Kate touches her stomach again.
KATE
It is feeding time.
JACK
Is it now?
She smacks her lips as hunger takes her over.
Kate eyes some fruit dangling from the brush
around the rivers edge. She tries to grab one,
but it is just out of reach.
She almost falls in.
JACK
Careful. We wouldn't want you to fall
in now would we?
KATE
We wouldn't huh?
She sits back down and starts rowing to the side
and motions to the fruit.
KATE (CONT'D)
Row to the side a bit, I want to get
that.
Jack starts rowing her way. Kate puts her oar
down and stands back up.
KATE (CONT'D)
Just making use of mother nature.
She tentatively steps on the edge of the boat to
grab a piece of fruit as Jack stops rowing. Kate
grabs for a piece of fruit just at her fingertips
and finally gets it.
KATE (CONT'D)
See. No problem.
Kate takes a bite out of the fruit as Jack rocks
the canoe. Kate steadies herself by grabbing the
tree limb.
KATE (CONT'D)
Hey, don't mess around.
Kate sits back down. Kate eats the fruit in total
bliss.
Jack looks behind them befuddled.
JACK
Well I hope your happy. Charlie and
Sayid are totally out of view now.
Kate sees something in the water behind Jack. She stares
and points to it.
KATE
What the hell is that?
Jack turns around in fear. He knows what lurks in
the forest.
He peers into the river as Kate rocks the boat
plunging Jack in headfirst.
Kate claps in pure elation.
Jack dips his head above water. He regains his
orientation and brushes the water from his hair.
JACK
Very funny.
Kate is so pleased with her joke and rocks the
boat again.
KATE
Next time, don't mess around.
Jack tries to get back in the canoe, but stumbles
a bit.
Just as he is getting back in the canoe, he feels
a nudge at his pant leg and looks down.
JACK
Ow.
KATE
What, what is it?
Jack struggles to brush some thing back from his
legs. He rockets into the canoe.
His pants are ripped apart from bites. They both
notice them, but only she laughs.
KATE (CONT'D)
Piranha?
JACK
Yes.
KATE
Why doesn't that surprise me?
Jack leans back in bliss.
JACK
It's actually kind of cool. I always
wanted to be attacked by piranha.
INT. JACK'S CAR - DAY - FLASHBACK
Jack is happily singing along to the SONG on the
radio and tapping the wheel. He taps too hard and
hurts his hand wincing in pain.
He's at a stop light and reaches into his glove
compartment to get some medicine.
He grabs his bottle, but it is empty.
He shoves the bottle back in the compartment and
turns his blinker light on.
His beeper goes off.
He pulls it up and looks it over.
He immediately changes the direction of his
blinker light.
INT. PHARMACY - DAY - FLASHBACK
Jack hands Gwen a slip for some medicine.
JACK
Can you hurry it up? I'm on call.
The pharmacist frowns. She looks the slip over and
points to it.
GWEN
Who's signature is this?
JACK
My father's why?
GWEN
Well, it has to be on his pad. This is
your pad.
Jack sighs.
JACK
Oh forget it.
Jack rips the prescription from her hand and
leaves. Gwen gets on the phone.
JACK (CONT'D)
What the hell am I going to do now?
INT. HOSPITAL. EXAMINING ROOM - DAY - FLASHBACK
Jack is sitting on an examining table with a
patients gown on, in a typical aseptic room.
Christian is using his stethoscope to monitor his heart.
He sees Jack trying not to lean on his hand. He
grasps it and examines it.
JACK
Ow.
CHRISTIAN
How long has this been going on?
JACK
Awhile now. Look can you just give me
the pills or what?
Christian is amused and prods his hand a little to
get a reaction from Jack.
Jack pulls his hand away immediately.
Christian shakes his head and looks at a Jack's
chart.
CHRISTIAN
That's not going to make you get this
fixed. It needs to be operated on. You
have degenerative rheumatoid arthritis.
It's in the late stages.
JACK
Look, I don't have time for this. You
know if I take time off from my new
practice it'll collapse.
They both hear ETHEL, the old secretary, page them
using the intercom.
ETHEL
Dr. Shepard, I mean Christian. You have
an important call from...Australia?
Christian is rattled and responds to the page by
pressing the intercom button quickly.
CHRISTIAN
Ok, that'll be all. I'll take care of
it.
Christian turns to Jack.
CHRISTIAN
I'll be right back. Don't go anywhere.
JACK
Wouldn't dream of it.
Christian leaves the room.
Jack CREAKS the door open. Christian is on the
phone standing and looking out the window and
engrossed in his conversation.
Jack sees a prescription pad on his desk and goes
toward it pocketing it. Just as he does it,
Christian comes back in the room.
JACK
I think I changed my mind. I'm going to
have that surgery after all.
CHRISTIAN
Good, good. Let's set you up for an
appointment.
He pats Jack on the back.

EXT. RIVER - DAY
Jack and Kate paddle down the river while Sayid
and Charlie trail them. Kate paddles along like
an expert with a smirk and Jack notices.
JACK
You seem to be having fun.
KATE
I don't know I guess it because I have
never done his.
JACK
What else haven't you done before?
Kate and Jack both blush and keep paddling.
Kate looks back and gets a displeased look on her
face.
KATE
Where have those two disappeared to
again?
Jack turns around to look and sees no one.
JACK
Charlie's really starting to piss me
off.
Jack turns around again in the canoe in an effort
to find the two shielding his eyes from the sun.
Kate stops paddling too and seems to be
preoccupied with something behind Jack.
JACK (CONT'D)
One of us has to paddle.
KATE
I think we both should.
JACK
Look, I don't have time for this.
Kate points to behind Jack.
Jack hesitates and turns around to see the river
dissipating into a water fall nearly ahead of
them.
They both start paddling as fast as they can to
the side of the river, but hit a boulder in the
way bouncing them into the center of the river.
They fall upside down in the canoe through the
waterfall and delve into the pool beneath it.
Jack frees himself from the canoe, but Kate has
her shirt stuck on an ore setting.
She struggles to get free, but her shirt won't
budge.
Jack surfaces and lets out a gasp for air looking around.
He doesn't know what to do and shows an instant of
helplessness.
JACK (CONT'D)
Kate? Kate!
Jack starts to get worried.
He bobs his head underwater to look, but sees
nothing in the muddied pool.
Jack goes down again and sees the canoe, but not
her looking around frantically.
He sees a faint body in the distance leaving the
pool and goes to it.
EXT. FOREST - DAY
Kate limps out of the pool regaining her
composure. She has a big splinter lodged in her
foot.
KATE
I'm all right, it's just my foot. The
canoe hit a rock and I think there is a
splinter in it now.
JACK
It's more than that, we'll have to take
your splinter out.
Jack sees a golden necklace in the ground and
picks it up. It has Japanese writing on it and
appears to have Jin's last name on it.
JACK (CONT'D)
Take a look at this.
Jack hands the necklace to Kate and props her up
and examines her foot.
KATE
The writing is Japanese. Is it Jin's?
Jin sure was eager to come out here. Wonder
why?
JACK
Ok, where does it hurt?
She points to her ankle. Jack holds it and
massages it a bit.
JACK (CONT'D)
Here?
KATE
No up a little.
He cradles her calf.
JACK
Here?
KATE
My neck hurts a lot more though.
Jack starts to examine her neck.
KATE
A little to the left. Oh yeah, that's
it.
Jack shakes his head and laughs it off.
KATE
Was worth a shot.
JACK
Maybe another time I'll give you a
massage.
Charlie and Sayid appear from the brush with their
canoe in tow.
CHARLIE
No time for love Dr. Jack. Where have
you guys been? Didn't I tell you about
the shortcut?
Kate and Jack look like they want to strangle
Charlie.
Charlie sticks his leg out.
CHARLIE (CONT'D)
My ankle kind of hurts too. Can you
look at it?
Kate gets up, but stumbles yelling in pain as the
stick pricks into her leg.
INT. AIRPORT - DAY - FLASHBACK
Jack is in line at the x-ray machine. Several passengers
lay ahead and before him.
ANA LUCIA wands passengers who fail the metal
detector.
Jack gets nervous and clutches his bag tightly.
He unzips it a bit revealing his stash of
prescription drugs and then zips it back up.
Jack reaches the front of the line and puts his
bag on the x-ray machine and enters the metal
detector.
It goes off with a loud BUZZ. Ana Lucia
approaches him with her wand.
Jack's bag goes through and waits for him at the
other end.
ANA LUCIA
Any metallic objects or weapons I should
know about?
JACK
I'm a doctor, of course not.
Ana Lucia smirks.
ANA LUCIA
Not from the doctor's I know.
Jack takes out his keys from his pockets. Ana
Lucia wands Jack over.
The machine's loud BUZZ alerts everyone around
this time.
Jack looks up and sees his bag is gone. He begins
to panic and looks past Ana Lucia for it.
Jack sees two Middle Eastern men walking away with
it. One of them is Sayid. The other, Sayid's
brother AMIR, a thin brutish yet quiet man, is carrying
Jack's bag.
JACK
Hey! Those Middle Eastern guys have got
my bag.
Jack tries to run after him, but Ana Lucia grabs
him by the neck and puts him to the ground.
ANA LUCIA
It's always the Middle easterners fault,
huh?
She reaches in his pockets to pat him down and
finds an old bullet.
ANA LUCIA (CONT'D)
Just a doctor huh? What are you doing
with a round in your pocket anyways?
JACK
It's just an old World War two round I
carry for good luck. Are you just going
to let that guy get away?
Ana Lucia finishes patting him down. Jack gets
back to his feet. They both look around and don't
see anybody.
ANA LUCIA
What exactly was in it anyways?
Jack hesitates then holds back his answer. Ana
Lucia smiles aware he is hiding something.
ANA LUCIA (CONT'D)
Good thing for me my shift is up.
Ana flirtingly eyes Jack as he regains his
dignity.
JACK
Me too.
Just off the conveyor is a bag. It's Jack's bag. Ana
Lucia notices it as well.
ANA LUCIA
There it is. Now shouldn't we be happy?
Jack is nowhere near happy, but relieved. He
takes his bag.
INT. AIRPORT. BATHROOM - DAY - FLASHBACK
Jack sits on the toilet and opens his bag. It's
not his. It contains various toiletries and a
copy of rolling stone magazine with Charlie on the
front of it.
He tosses the magazine out.
JACK
I hate those guys.
He gets up and takes his bag slamming the stall.
INT. AIRPORT. TERMINAL - DAY - FLASHBACK
Jack feverishly scurries around the terminal for a
glimpse of the man who took his bag.
Sayid and Amir sit at a table near some food
vendors.
Sayid and Amir wrestle over Jack's bag.
They argue and get up to board their flight.
Jack sees the counter they are headed to...
It's Jack's flight as well.
Jack lays cautious and follows behind them to
board the plane.
When he gets to the boarding area hands his
boarding pass to an attendant and walks to the
plane.

out, but she retracts in pain.
JACK
Does it hurt?
KATE
Yes!
Jack points to Charlie and Sayid.
JACK
Ok, you two hold her down and I'll pull
it out.
KATE
I hate you.
JACK
I know. On 3 ok?
Kate nods.
JACK
One, two.
Jack pulls the stick out early.
KATE
I hate you Jack!
She flails her arms and hits Charlie out cold onto
the bank.
Charlie lays motionless as Jack and Kate chuckle.
Jack looks at her as she passes out onto the bank.
EXT. ISLAND. POOL BANK - DAY
Charlie comes to while Jack finishes up bandaging
up Kate's leg up with his ripped shirt.
KATE
The no shirt look is kind of good on
you.
Jack smiles as he finishes his wrap. Sayid is
nowhere to be found. Charlie gets to his knees
with a welt on his forehead.
KATE (CONT'D)
Think he'll remember?
JACK
No, we'll just tell him he was sleeping.
CHARLIE
We were fixing your leg and I just went
out.
JACK
Must have been hypoglycemia. We've been
hiking all day. No one else has eaten
either. We'll care to it when we get back
to camp.
CHARLIE
Oh ok.
Charlie walks away nodding and grasping his chin.
Kate shakes her head at Jack.
KATE
You're such an ass.
JACK
I know. Let's leave our canoe's here and
head out on land from here on. Does
that sound right Charlie?
CHARLIE
Yeah sure, ok.
Someone approaches Charlie from behind.
He taps Charlie on the shoulder...
It's Sayid.
SAYID
I've found the remainder of a path.
Looks like this whole area has had
inhabitants before. These paths are
much older than the others I think.
CHARLIE
Now how can you tell that?
SAYID
Many trees have been cut down. Their
rings indicate that they have been dead
about fifty years or so.
JACK
I don't know why we haven't encountered
them before then.
SAYID
They must want to stay hidden for some
reason.
EXT. FOREST - DAY
Sawyer and Locke lay the boar on Locke's workbench
with a CLANK. Locke finds some of his homemade
tools and pulls out a hatchet.
LOCKE
So now what you want to do is Cut the
head off and drain Him. Then we can
skin him.
Locke hands Sawyer the hatchet. Sawyer takes it
and chops the boars head off in one swipe.
LOCKE (CONT'D)
Good.
SAWYER
That's more than good, I taught him a
lesson.
EXT. FOREST - DAY
Locke is hollowing out a barbecue pit from the
ground. The boar has been skinned and lays near
Sawyer.
Sawyer is trying his best to thread together the
skin with his glasses on.
Sawyer punctures his thumb trying to thread the
skin to some cloth.
SAWYER
God damn it.
LOCKE
Did you hurt yourself? Need mommy to
kiss it?
SAWYER
Very funny. And you better not tell
anyone. You sew this or I'm going to
make sure no one pushes that button
again.
LOCKE
Fine by me.
EXT. FOREST - DAY
Locke has finished digging the pit and has propped
up some wood to the side making a rotisserie.
They both carry it to it and put it on the ground.
LOCKE
Ok, on three shove it straight through
it. One, two, three.
They ram a wooden pole straight through it but...
It doesn't go all the way through.
SAWYER
Oh, man. This boar just won't give Up.
Sawyer stops for a moment, then they pound on the
pole and get it through.
LOCKE
Ok, now to that football. Let's see
what you have got.
SAWYER
Don't mind if I do.
The hide oddly resembles a deflated football.
LOCKE
Now what you need is to inflate it.
Sawyer isn't quite sure what to do.
Locke points to Walt in the distance.
LOCKE (CONT'D)
Get a balloon.
EXT. BEACH - DAY
WALT is playing on the beach away from his tent.
Sawyer rummages through it, but doesn't see
anything.
He notices Walt toying with a condom.
He walks over to Walt.
SAWYER
What do you say you give me one of your
balloons?
Walt pulls the condom away.
WALT
It's mine.
SAWYER
Those are big people balloons.
WALT
What can you give me?
Sawyer pulls out his wallet with a baseball card.
It's Pete Rose.
SAWYER
Here, it's Pete Rose.
WALT
Man. Who the hell is Pete Rose.
Walt sees Sawyer shiny diver's watch.
WALT
How about that watch.
SAWYER
My watch.
Sawyer can't believe his ears. MICHAEL walks up
to the two. Sawyer acts like he's going to
strangle the kid.
SAWYER (CONT'D)
Kid, don't test me or...
MICHAEL
Or what?
SAWYER
Nothing. Oh Jesus. Take it.
Sawyer slowly takes off his watch.
Walt gives him the condom.
INT. AIRPLANE. - DAY - FLASHBACK
Jack is seated on the airplane that is in
mid-flight. He's frantically looking around
everywhere for Sayid and Amir, but they are
nowhere to be seen.
The stay seated sign CLANGS off.
He looks out the window just as a man brushes by
him.
It's Amir.
Jack gets up and follows him with Amir's bag.
Amir is clueless to Jack's presence.
They travel past a few passengers and near the
bathroom. Amir pulls back the curtain to the
bathroom area and Jack resets it.
INT. AIRPLANE. BATHROOM - DAY - FLASHBACK
Jack throws him into the bathroom with two hands
and goes in after him.
JACK
Where is my bag?
AMIR
I don't know what you are talking about.
Jack lifts up his bag.
JACK
You know what I'm talking about. The man
is obviously terrified and sweating.
Jack drops the bag and clutches Amir by
his shirt harder.
AMIR
It's, it's, we got rid of it. It wasn't
meant to happen like this.
JACK
Like what?
AMIR
Your bag, you have to give it back to
me.
JACK
You're not getting anything back until
you give me my things.
AMIR
We, we threw them away at the airport.
Jack cocks his fist ready to hit him, but retracts
his hand realizing how badly he'd hurt his bad
hand.
JACK
Those pills in my bag are the only things
saving you so you better have some more.
AMIR
Yes, yes, I think we kept some of them.
Let me get back to my seat.
JACK
You do that. I'll be waiting here. Then
you'll have your bag.
Amir leaves and Jack is left alone with his bag.
Jack lifts it up onto the sink starring at it.
Amir returns with Jack's bag.
They exchange the two.
When he sees that his pills are gone he decks Amir
out cold.
INT. AIRPLANE - DAY - FLASHBACK
Jack and stores his bag in the overhead
compartment.
He sits down next to ROSE.
He relaxes and puts his chair back.
INT. AIRPLANE. BATHROOM - DAY - FLASHBACK
Amir notices that the bag is CLICKING.
Amir opens it up and sees an alarm clock.
He grasps it as it falls apart and reveals some plastic
explosives.
Amir panics and tries to flush it down the
toilet.
He tries forcing it down, but...
It won't budge.
He rips the toilet off and throws it down the
shaft as a large explosion goes off.
EXT. ISLAND. FOREST - DAY - FLASHBACK
The forest is littered with flaming crash
wreckage. Jack has been helping rescue people all
day. He's retreated to the forest for some solitude.
He looks around and slips on the wet forest
floor. He braces himself with his broken hand
realizing he's about to be severely injured, but it
doesn't hurt anymore. He forgot all about it.
JACK
Hmm? That's weird.
He shakes his hand a bit and feels for the broken
bones, but can't find any.
It's a miracle and he knows it, but keeps it to
himself.
Jack looks around at the distance finds a mountain
top.
Someone taps his shoulder scaring the crap out of
him.
It's Kate.
KATE
Hey, can you give us a hand we need
someone to help us out. We've found
some more people.
Kate smiles at Jack. Jack nods. Jack regains his composure
and follows her.
JACK
Ok, ok.
KATE
Well, come on then.
END ACT FOUR
FADE OUT.
FADE IN:
ACT FIVE
EXT. FOREST. PATH - DAY
Charlie, Jack, Kate, and Sayid are all walking
along dirt path and eye an opening in the brush.
They hear some RUMBLING in the brush.
They ready their weapons.
It is just a deer. It stares at them and flinches running
away.
CHARLIE
Hey look there. This must be it.
EXT. BEACH - DAY
Charlie rushes out ahead of everyone onto the
beach. He runs toward something.
The rest of the group stands still after reaching
the beach in amazement.
It's an old, rusty submarine that's been wrecked
on the beach complete with seaweed all over it.
SAYID
Be careful Charlie.
Charlie reaches the submarine and finds a gaping
hole in it. At the starboard end the faded numbers
of 108.
Charlie paints them over with his hand.
INT. SUBMARINE. CREW QUARTER'S - DAY
It's damp and dark. Charlie finds a few beds that
look slept in.
He starts rummaging through the contents of some
foot lockers.
CHARLIE
This is great, there's tons of stuff in
here.
EXT. BEACH. SUBMARINE - DAY
The group reaches the submarine, but doesn't join
Charlie's enthusiasm.
JACK
I want to take a look around and make
sure there's nobody else around.
KATE
Around? Like who? Survivors? Don't
you think we'd have already seen them.
JACK
Stranger things have happened.
INT. SUBMARINE - DAY
Charlie finds a piece of cloth all folded up.
Sayid enters the porthole and has a look around.
CHARLIE
I think this will make a good blanket.
What do you think?
Sayid is too engrossed with the old junk he sees
laying around to say anything.
CHARLIE (CONT'D)
They're long gone. Join in.
Sayid notices that the beds have been used, but is
unsure. Sayid looks inside a foot locker and finds
some unused mortar rounds.
SAYID
I don't think this island gets very
cold. Looks like we have some mortar
rounds.
CHARLIE
Cool. Bring them.
SAYID
I intend to. Any medical supplies yet?
CHARLIE
Nope, sorry.
Charlie unfolds the cloth, but is oblivious to the
symbolic meaning of it.
He's unfolded a World War Two Japanese flag.
KATE
Allies must have island hopped around
these guys.
Charlie puts the flag down and sees the
typewriter. It's an old, dusty one, but in
working order.
He taps its keys and it responds.
CHARLIE
It works. Yes! I bet we could use this
to make a really cool Island newspaper.
Charlie picks it up.
A shadow appears behind Sayid and Charlie stops
talking noticing no one else appears enthused.
CHARLIE (CONT'D)
What you guys don't want a newspaper?
Fear what I'll drudge up on you?
Charlie turns around to face the figure behind
him.
His expression changes to disbelief as he is
knocked out.
EXT. BEACH. - DAY
Jack doesn't see any signs of a village, but
notices a peculiar vine he's seen before. It lays
on a few weathered trees just beyond the sand.
Jack walks to the trees to examine it further.
JACK
I'll be damned.
He picks at the vines and rips it from the tree
and puts it in his backpack.
He heads for the submarine.
EXT. BEACH. SUBMARINE - DAY
Jack comes around the submarine.
JACK
Looks like I may have found...
He sees Sayid, Kate, and Charlie sitting in the
ground being held at gunpoint by a Japanese
soldier right outside the hole with his back to the
sub.
The soldier hasn't aged a bit since World War Two.
Jack hesitates for a moment.
JACK (CONT'D)
I'm not going to run away from my problems
this time. It has to stop here.
As Jack climbs on top the sub, the soldier
bayonets Sayid in the shoulder as Sayid reaches
for his pockets.
SOLDIER (IN JAPANESE)
What are you doing? Stop it.
Jack reaches the top of the sub.
He inches toward the middle near a large anti-ship
turret.
The captives can see Jack and are relieved.
He takes out his pistol, but...
puts it down as he sees the direct line through
the soldier goes through Sayid.
Jack leaps from the top of the sub and tackles the
soldier.
His gun falls and Sayid helps Jack subdue him with
a few punches.
SAYID
Glad you could drop in.
CHARLIE
Well, if that isn't a Die Hard moment I
don't know what is?
JACK
I found some vines that could treat
Rousseau. Let's rope him up and take
him back to camp.
Two more Japanese soldiers appear from the brush
and run towards the group. They're armed with
automatic weapons.
They spray the group barely missing their heals.
The bullets EXPLODE the trees around them.
KATE
Uh, I don't think that's such a good
idea.
Jack takes Kate's hand and runs with her toward
the path.
Sayid and Charlie follow.
They all reach the forest safely as bullets WHIZ
past their heads.
EXT. FOREST. PATH - DAY
Charlie runs to the group.
They're tired and out of breathe, but have made it
back to the safety of the underbrush.
KATE
What now?
JACK
I say we call it a night.
SAYID
Agreed.
EXT. BEACH. CLEARING - DAY
Sawyer uses Locke's workbench putting the
finishing touches on sewing together an
old-fashioned football while Locke starts the
barbecue off in a big pit.
Hurley and several people huddle around the fire.
SAWYER
Can't get any better than this. There.
Sawyer has finished his football and crosses his
arms with a big smile on his face.
SAWYER
Hey big boy. Come over here.
Hurley approaches Sawyer.
SAWYER
Looks like the real thing don't it?
HURLEY
I was at a real game once. They kicked
me out when I wouldn't pay for the seat
next to me too.
Sawyer gives him a look-over.
SAWYER
Well, you are a big guy.
HURLEY
Yeah, the funny thing was I was sitting
next to Roseanne Barr. Sucks when you
are poor.
SAWYER
Don't you know it. Good thing they
didn't pull the same thing on you for
our flight.
Sawyer finishes sewing the football together, but
it is deflated. There's an opening for the condom
to be blown up.
HURLEY
Actually, they tried, I paid for two
tickets. I didn't even argue ironic,
huh?
SAWYER
Ok Alanis. You've got big lungs. Why
don't you give her a try?
Sawyer hands over the football to Hurley.
HURLEY
Don't mind if I do.
Hurley takes a big gasp of air and starts to fill
the football. He slowly fills it up until it
almost bursts.
SAWYER
Easy there big fellow.
Sawyer takes the football away and motions to
Hurley.
HURLEY
Hey, what is this?
SAWYER
Go long.
He cocks it back and tosses it to Hurley running
towards Locke's barbecue. It hits Hurley in the
Chest so hard it knocks him down near the pit.
Hurley catches fire. Locke jumps on him and rolls
him around putting the fire out.
EXT. BEACH. CLEARING - DUSK
Sawyer, Hurley, Jin, and several people are lined
up playing football. Sawyer is at quarterback and
Hurley is lined up for the defense.
SAWYER
Hut, hut!
Sawyer retreats pursued by Hurley.
He hurls a line drive for Jin, and gets driven to
the ground by Hurley. Sawyer's pass is picked off
and returned for a touchdown.
SAWYER
At least we get to eat the hog little
man.
Hurley gets off Sawyer and picks him up.
HURLEY
Indeed.
EXT. BEACH - DUSK
Jack, Kate, Locke, and Sayid return from the
forest famished and with only one canoe. Jack
sees Locke and hands it to Locke.
JACK
Don't ask.
Locke is amused.
LOCKE
I won't then.
Charlie is tending to his new typewriter. He sits
down at it with some food.
CHARLIE
Can't wait to get started.
JACK
I better be on the front page or
something.
INT. HATCH - DUSK
Jack pulls out the vines from his backpack as he
observes the ailing Rousseau.
JACK
They will do you good. They are not
pills, but what a pill would be made out
of anyways.
Jack tears apart the vines.
ROUSSEAU
How resourceful.
JACK
Yeah, we got lucky.
Rousseau takes the vines and starts to munch on
them.
Sayid enters the tent.
SAYID
Can I talk to you a second?
Jack approaches Sayid.
JACK
What is it?
Sayid shows Jack a sketch of the green tablet they
saw earlier.
SAYID
I sketched this after we came back. I
was thinking. A pentagram's interior
angles once added, equal 108
JACK
So? Sayid, I'm tired.
SAYID
I'm not sure, but we should ponder it
more. Everything seems to be tied
together, the tablet, the sub, the
countdown. I have a theory.
JACK
Yeah, or it might just be a big
coincidence.
SAYID
It seems like people are drawn to this
island for a purpose.
JACK
I'm more interested in that gun on that
ship. We may be able to use it to
signal a ship or a plane. I'll see you
later I have to find Jin.
SAYID
And I guess that son of her was the
rising sun of the Japanese flag she was
trying to warn us about.
JACK
I guess she's not all that bad after
all.
SAYID
We'll see about that.
EXT. BEACH. CLEARING - DUSK
Jin is eating some pork with SUN while Jack
dangles the necklace he found. Sun approaches
Jack.
SUN
Where did you get that?
JACK
I found it on the way to pick up the
medical supplies.
JIN
What I want to know is why Jin was all
the way out there in the first place?
Sun takes the necklace and looks it and turns it
over. She brushes off some dirt with her thumb.
SUN
This isn't Jin's. This is his grandfather's.
He died in World War Two.
JACK
Somehow I don't think that's all the way
true. I don't know how else to explain
this, but we encountered some Japanese
soldiers and their wrecked submarine.
They both observe Jin who's obviously distressed.
EXT. ISLAND - CLEARING - DUSK
Kate and Hurley eat some pork next to the fire.
Kate mends her wound and gives Sawyer a leg and
laughs at him.
EXT. ISLAND - CLEARING - DUSK
Sun shows Jin the necklace. He's stunned and
palms it into his pocket after a polite smile.
She discusses the matter with him.
EXT. ISLAND - CLEARING - DUSK
Charlie practices typing on his typewriter pleased
with himself even without any paper.
INT. HATCH - DUSK
Rousseau recovers and drinks some water from a
canteen with Jack who's exhausted.
EXT. ISLAND - BEACH - DUSK
Locke arduously mends the dents in the canoe with
a sturdy hammer.
FADE OUT.
