INT. HOUSE - BEDROOM - NIGHT
Silence. Darkness. A lonely bedroom and blood-stained sheets
over a bed. The phone is ringing, but no one picks it up.
An arm hangs from the bed's edge, blood drips from the
fingertips and stain the carpet.
Outside this room, someone opens a door, it creaks.
A cupboard holds a small black alarm clock, modern, it says
'10:00 PM'. The television set on the opposite side of the
room turns itself on after the alarm clock goes off. A
Sitcom.
Downstairs, SETH (18) opens the front door of the house.
SETH
Faye, the phone!
There is no answer. He picks it up.
SETH (cont'd)
(to the phone)
Hello?
Silence.
SETH (cont'd)
(to the phone)
Oh hi, Mrs. Brown. Yeah, she's
upstairs.
He begins climbing the staircase.
SETH (cont'd)
(to the phone)
All right, I'll tell her. Yeah, we
weren't going to sleep here anyway.
He laughs as he reaches the top of the flight of stairs.
SETH (cont'd)
(to the phone)
Okay, done. Bye.
He hangs up and enters the room the body was in.
SETH (cont'd)
Faye it was your mo-
Seth stops cold when he sees FAYE (17). She's laying on the
bed over a puddle of blood. Seth drops the phone, it falls on
the floor.
SETH (cont'd)
Oh god.
Seth stares at her for a second and then starts walking
towards her, breathing heavily, loudly. He swallows, his eyes
haven't unglued from her dead body. His mouth is open.
Seth stops in front of her and holds her tightly, squeezing
her arm. He moves her face, she's dead. He swallows hard and
buries his face on the bloodstained sheets. He sobs silently.
Seth kneels in front of her again and swallows, staring at
her.
He closes his eyes.
Darkness, he begins reminiscing on the events. He enters the
house, he calls Faye, his voice RESONATES, he enters the
room. Faye is dead. Eileen's voice is heard, blurry and
distorted, saying "Don't bother..."
Everything, every image, begins melding, spinning, a FLASH!
SMASH CUT TO:
INT. SETH'S HOUSE - SETH'S ROOM - NIGHT
Seth opens his eyes in the middle of the night. His room is
dark, he is half under his sheets. He looks around the room,
as if he had just awakened from a nightmare.
He isn't in the same room he was before, not even in the same
house.
He looks at the clock, which is mounted on the wall, it's
almost 6. He glances outside once more and yawns. He rubs his
hand on his face and gets off the bed.
INT. SETH'S HOUSE - MORNING
Seth opens the door of his room; he is already dressed,
showered.
SETH
Mom! Breakfast.
Seth walks through a hallway, crosses the foyer and enters
the kitchen. His mother, JOAN (36) is standing there,
reaching for a couple of boxes of cereal.
SETH (cont'd)
Oh.
JOAN
Morning.
Seth opens a drawer and fishes out a couple of cereal bowls.
Then, he opens the next drawer and grabs two big spoons. He
places everything on the table.
JOAN (cont'd)
Could you, reach me the boxes? I
pushed them too far away.
Seth, who was opening the fridge, walks towards her and
stands on the tips of his feet, he reaches the cereal boxes
and gives them to Joan.
JOAN (CONT'D) (cont'd)
Thanks.
She places them on the table. Seth sits down.
SETH
Welcome...
(beat)
Sit down.
Joan opens the fridge, snags the milk and puts it on the
table, in front of him.
SETH (CONT'D)
(pouring himself a bowl of
cereal)
Thanks. You're not having anything?
Joan smiles and shakes her head.
JOAN
No. I'm having breakfast with a
friend.
Seth raises his eyebrows as he keeps eating his cereal bowl
in big, clumsy scoops. He glances at his mother.
SETH
You can stand up, I'm almost
done...
Joan smiles.
JOAN
It's okay. I'm not going anywhere
until 10.
Seth nods and finishes the cereal. He stands up, his mother
does the same. He puts the bowl and the spoon on the sink
counter. His mom puts everything else away, the milk in the
fridge, the clean bowl in the drawer.
SETH
See you later, mom.
Seth grabs his backpack from a chair next to the main door.
There's also a bike lock, he grabs it and puts it inside his
backpack. After doing that, he slips on a pair of headphones
and clicks On a CD Walkman, which he puts in his pocket. The
music begins playing.
He walks out and rides down the street.
CUT TO:
INT. EILEEN'S FLAT - ROOM - MORNING
The room is a complete mess. There are messily handwritten
sheets of paper strewn everywhere. Sealed boxes and nylon
luggage
EILEEN (19) is sitting on a chair, scribing on a sheet of
paper over a desk. She looks up, at a window just in front of
her. The apartment's on the fourth floor. The day outside is
white.
She finishes whatever she was writing and pushes it inside a
small army green pack she later swings over her shoulder.
There's a knocking on the door.
EILEEN
Yeah.
An older woman, SYLVIA (46) opens the door. She has huge bags
under her eyes and a lit cigarette in her hand. She has badly
washed off makeup on her face.
SYLVIA
Morning.
(she hits the cigarette)
Can I ask you a favor?...Could you
get some shampoo and cheese on your
way back home?
Sylvia looks around the room, her eyes half closed, then back
at Eileen.
EILEEN
I don't have money.
She walks out, walking by Sylvia.
SYLVIA
No?
Eileen shakes her head, she mouths "No" then.
SYLVIA (CONT'D)
Well...get some.
Eileen turns around.
EILEEN
What? You're the one who wants
stuff, not me.
SYLVIA
I mean for the pay, I have my half.
(beat)
Now, hold on, let me give you some
money.
Eileen walks to the main door and opens it.
EILEEN
Don't bother, I don't have time.
Won't be returning home until late.
Go yourself, don't be such a sloth.
Sylvia, who was digging her purse, stays staring at Eileen,
who leaves closing the main door behind her.
The elevator shaft is waiting just at the end of the hallway,
Eileen calls it by pressing the button and waits. After a
second, DING! It's here. She walks inside. The doors close.
CUT TO:
EXT. FORT MADISON HIGH SCHOOL - MORNING
Buses are parked outside the crowded school. Many teens are
entering the main building, others are sitting on the grass,
chatting.
Seth arrives riding his bike, making his way through people.
He stops in front of some metal bike racks, and puts his own
bike there. After opening his back pack, he takes the bike
lock and straps it on, then locks it. He swings his back over
his shoulder and turns around, glancing at the street.
Eileen's old and beaten up early nineties car drives by and
stops. She gets off the car and grabs her bag. Walking
towards the school's main entrance, Eileen seems to be
looking at the teens around her. She walks past Seth but
doesn't glance at him.
Seth walks towards the street as a car drives by. It stops in
front of him. Faye walks out. She's pretty, skinny, with long
hair. Her brother, DESMOND (19), walks from the driver's seat
and around the car.
SETH
Hey you.
Faye stops in front of him and kisses his lips.
FAYE
(smiling)
Hi.
Desmond doesn't even glance at the lovebirds but heads
directly to the school entrance, where he vanishes from
sight.
Seth grabs the books Faye was holding and takes them as they
walk together.
SETH
So, what's the story?
FAYE
The story's...none. What about you?
They enter the building.
SETH
The same.
(beat)
Didn't do a thing yesterday. You
know, after.
Faye raises her eyebrows.
FAYE
You said you had an exam,
something?
SETH
I do. You know me though, I cannot
sit in front of a book more than
ten minutes, I start drifting.
Faye laughs.
FAYE
At what time is your exam?
Seth counts hours with his eyes.
SETH
It's...sixth, I think.
(beat)
Yeah, sixth.
FAYE
Good. Can you skip fourth, or fifth
period?
SETH
Sure...but I'll find it harder to
study with you.
Faye chuckles.
FAYE
Not me, a friend.
SETH
Oh. Okay.
Faye shakes her head, smiling.
FAYE
Anyway, meet me outside, in the
courtyard. See you then.
Faye enters the classroom, then stops and comes back to grab
the books Seth was holding for her.
FAYE (cont'd)
There, thanks.
She enters the classroom, leaving a smile behind. He turns
around and bumps with Eileen.
SETH
Sorry.
Eileen stares at him for a second, inspecting his face. Seth
takes a step back and stares puzzled at her.
SETH (cont'd)
Can I help you.
Eileen snaps back, then smiles.
EILEEN
No, sorry, I thought I...
(beat)
What's your name?
Seth is very confused.
SETH
I'm...Seth.
Eileen corners her eyes and nods.
EILEEN
Seth. Okay...I'll...see you around.
Now...I...must go.
She turns around and leaves. Seth stands there, still
slightly confused. He turns around and enters another
classroom.
CUT TO:
INT. FORT MADISON HIGH SCHOOL - CLASSROOM - DAY
Eileen is sitting on her desk, looking outside the window as
the teacher gives his speech. She glances at the desk,
there's an open notebook with random physics notes and
equations scribbled.
The corner of another single sheet of paper peeks from
underneath the notebook. She pulls it, it's the same oddly
doodled, drawn and written paper she had in her apartment.
The name "SETH" is written, underlined and circled next to
the word "ME", which is also written in the same fashion.
There is a big question mark, that covers almost one fourth
of the page.
She puts her finger over the paper, before folding it and
putting it in her pocket. She yawns, then, the bell rings.
All the students stand up. Eileen runs her hand down her face
and stands up, putting everything inside her bag.
She walks outside the classroom after everyone else has. She
turns around and starts walking outside, to a small
courtyard. She spots Faye and Seth sitting outside, leaning
against a tree.
EILEEN
(to herself, silently)
Faye.
She stands there, staring at the couple.
Seth is holding a notebook, both are looking at it. Seth
combs his hair with his fingers.
FAYE
Anything, though? Is this getting
through at all?
Seth sighs.
SETH
More or less...
FAYE
Enough for the exam?
SETH
Don't know...
Faye shows a smile and then checks her watch.
FAYE
Re-read it, she's on her way. I
gotta go.
SETH
Okay, thanks.
They kiss.
SETH (CONT'D) (cont'd)
See you later.
Faye leaves, Eileen is still standing there, her bag hangs on
her shoulder.
Faye passes next to her and tips her a smile.
FAYE
Hi, Anya.
Eileen turns.
EILEEN
Hey.
Faye enters the building, Eileen stares at her as she walks
in. Then, she turns to face Seth, who is reading his book's
notes. He looks around, then forward, he spots Eileen. Seth
gives her a smile, then turns back to his notebook.
Eileen begins walking towards Seth. She stops in front of
him.
Seth looks up at her.
SETH
Um, hi.
Eileen drops and crouches.
EILEEN
Hey, Seth, is it?
SETH
(nodding)
Yeah...
(beat)
Are you...you are the one who's
gonna help me pass, right?
Seth releases a silent, almost sarcastic laugh.
Eileen is puzzled.
EILEEN
I...
(she shakes her head)
Yeah, sure. What is it?
SETH
Oh great. Sit down.
Eileen smiles and sits down next to him.
SETH (CONT'D) (cont'd)
What's your name?
EILEEN
Anya.
SETH
Anya, right.
(beat)
I'm Seth.
EILEEN
I know. We met earlier.
Seth nods.
He shows her his notes.
SETH
Right, right.
(beat)
So, I hear you're good at this.
Eileen inspects the notes, and then nods.
EILEEN
Uh, yeah...I did this last
semester.
She opens her bag and puffs air, relieved. Then, she fishes
out a cigarette and a lighter.
EILEEN
Do you mind if I smoke?
Seth stares at her for a second.
SETH
Uh, no. No, go ahead.
(beat)
So, Faye started telling me about
the-
EILEEN
So you're Brown's boyfriend?
Seth stops.
SETH
Brown?
EILEEN
Faye. Faye Brown?
SETH
Oh. Yeah, I know. Yeah, that's me.
Eileen lights her cigarette.
EILEEN
For how long?
SETH
Um, two months? Maybe more.
Eileen nods.
EILEEN
Are you planning to...you know,
stay with her any longer?
SETH
What...what does this have to do
with chemistry?
EILEEN
Oh. Nothing, just...trying
to...make conversation.
SETH
That's okay. Sorry.
(beat)
So...Faye. Yeah, I think I might
keep her.
Eileen chuckles at Seth's humorous tone.
EILEEN
Glad.
SETH
You, how long have you known her?
Eileen smiles.
EILEEN
Not long enough. I just...say hi
when I see her, we're not great
friends or anything.
Seth nods.
SETH
She had never told me about you.
Eileen smiles.
EILEEN
So. Chem, you were on-
She looks to the side, there's a kid staring at her, MAX
(18). He is sitting alone, staring at her.
EILEEN (cont'd)
(staring at Max)
Um...Krebs, right?
SETH
Krebs?
Eileen snaps back to Seth.
EILEEN
Sorry.
(beat)
That kid's staring at us.
Seth turns around and spots Max, who is still staring at
them.
SETH
That's Max Something-berg.
(beat)
You don't know who he is?
Eileen sees him and frowns.
EILEEN
What do you mean?
SETH
He's gay...used to be friends with
Faye's brother, people know him.
EILEEN
Oh.
(beat)
Never heard of him.
SETH
Strange.
(beat)
Anyway, where were we?
EILEEN
Chem. So, okay where is it that
you're having trouble?
SETH
Everything, Faye started explaining
the basic stuff but I didn't-
Seth looks up, Eileen is still staring at Max, who is looking
down, at the floor.
SETH (cont'd)
(snaps his fingers)
Anya, here.
Eileen looks down, reminiscing.
EILEEN
Sorry.
(she checks her watch)
I gotta go.
Seth frowns, puzzled, then looks at her. She stands up, and
nabs her pack.
SETH
Wait, you...what?
EILEEN
Sorry, something just...I
remembered something.
SETH
No wait, you're supposed to help-
EILEEN
You'll be fine, sorry again.
(she walks away)
Bye.
Eileen walks away, she passes next to Max. He stares at her,
she does the same, Eileen walks away.
SETH
What the...hell?
Seth looks around. He scratches his chin and looks at Eileen
again, she disappears behind a corner.
He looks back at his notes and begins reading.
After a second, he stands up, frustrated and walks inside the
building.
CUT TO:
INT. FORT MADISON HIGH SCHOOL - CLASSROOM - DAY
Faye is sitting on her desk, taking class notes. The teacher
has drawn a line on the chalkboard.
TEACHER
It's simple, it doesn't take half
the time for the second body to
'catch' the new-
The bell rings.
TEACHER (cont'd)
We'll finish on Monday, have a nice
weekend.
All the students stand up, "yeah", "thanks".
Faye gets up and begins walking outside the classroom.
Outside, she meets SOPHIA (17), a pretty redhead.
FAYE
Oh hi, Soph, how did it go?
SOPHIA
Well, it didn't go. I was a little
late, Seth wasn't there. I couldn't
find him.
FAYE
What?
SOPHIA
Seth wasn't outside.
FAYE
So you didn't...
SOPHIA
I looked for him!
Faye looks down, she is holding her notebook with her hand.
She puts it inside her one strap denim pack.
FAYE
What is he thinking...?
SOPHIA
When's the exam? If I find him
maybe-
FAYE
No, it's in five minutes.
SOPHIA
Oh. Well.
(beat)
I'm sorry.
FAYE
No, okay. Thanks.
Sophia walks away, then, she stops and turns around.
SOPHIA
Oh, your brother was looking for
you.
FAYE
(smiles)
Okay.
Faye looks down the hallway, random students enter and leave
classrooms. She walks down the hallway, making herself a pony
tail with a scrounge she fished from her pocket.
She stops in front of a door and peeks in, many students are
taking their sits, talking to each other, reading notes. She
inspects the room, Seth isn't there.
SETH (O.S.)
(poking Faye's ribs
mildly)
Faye.
Faye turns around, Seth is standing behind her.
FAYE
What happened?
SETH
What?
FAYE
Sophia just told me that you
weren't outside.
SETH
Sophia...Who's Sophia?
Faye looks at him, puzzled.
FAYE
The girl, the one I asked to help
you for the exam?
SETH
What? No, that's what I wanted to
tell you. Your girl didn't even-
(beat)
Wait, Sophia?
Faye nods.
FAYE
Yeah?
SETH
I thought Anya was going to help
me.
FAYE
Anya?
SETH
Yeah! Some Anya came to me and told
me that you had sent her, we began
reading then she ran off.
FAYE
No, I didn't...
(beat)
I told Sophia to go help you, not
Anya. She's new, I barely know her.
Seth shakes his head.
SETH
Strange.
FAYE
So, what are you going to do?
Seth raises his eyebrows.
SETH
Nothing, I studied by myself after
this Anya girl left me.
FAYE
That's...so odd.
The teacher walks inside the classroom.
TEACHER
Are you going to join us, Mr.
Miller?
Seth snaps at him.
SETH
Yeah, I'm there.
(to Faye)
Gotta go, wish me luck.
FAYE
Good luck.
Seth walks inside the classroom, the teacher shuts the door
behind him.
Faye gives one last peek through the plate glass and smiles
at Seth, who is again reading his notes, mouthing the words.
She turns around and walks down the hallway, towards the
courtyard outside.
Max is still sitting outside, in the same spot he was before.
Faye inspects outside and walks inside the building again.
Max watches her walk inside the building and stands up,
Desmond is sitting not too far away, with a couple of
friends. Max stares at him and hesitates to continue, he sits
back down.
Desmond smiles.
DESMOND
Hey!
Max turns around, he begins sweating, he looks down.
DESMOND (cont'd)
HEY!
Max stands up, picks up his backpack and starts walking away.
Desmond stands up.
DESMOND (cont'd)
Where are you going, fag?
Max walks away faster, turns around and watches Desmond
walking towards him.
He turns around again, he bumps into Eileen. He looks at her,
nervously.
MAX
Sorry.
He stares at her again.
EILEEN
It's all-rig-
Eileen looks up and looks at Desmond, who stops.
EILEEN (cont'd)
(re: Desmond)
You're...
Max stares at Desmond, frightened.
MAX
I...I gotta go.
EILEEN
No wait, do you know him?
Max turns around.
MAX
No.
DESMOND
He does.
(turns to Max)
Don't you?
EILEEN
(to Desmond)
You're...Brown's brother aren't
you?
DESMOND
The hell are you?
EILEEN
Anya. I know your sister.
DESMOND
Don't care...
Desmond turns around and walks back with his friends.
MAX
(to Eileen)
Thanks.
EILEEN
Why?
MAX
I was about to get the shit kicked
out of.
Eileen raises her eyebrows and smiles.
EILEEN
What?
She glances at Desmond. Max begins walking away.
MAX
Yes. Thanks.
EILEEN
You're welcome...
(beat)
...I guess.
Max walks away. Stops, closes his eyes, then opens them.
MAX
(scoffs)
What's your name again?
EILEEN
Anya.
(smiles)
You're...Max, right?
Max nods.
Eileen sits down on a bench.
EILEEN (cont'd)
(re: the bench)
Sit down.
Max looks around before sighing and walking towards her.
EILEEN (cont'd)
And...are you friends with Seth?
Max sits down.
MAX
No.
EILEEN
Oh. You're always alone, aren't
you.
Max stares at her.
MAX
Hm?
EILEEN
Just wondering. Why?
MAX
What?
EILEEN
Why are you alone?
MAX
Because I want to.
EILEEN
(scoffs)
Huh. Aren't you original.
MAX
(smiles)
That's not the point.
(beat)
I used to...I was friends with
Desmond, before.
EILEEN
What happened?
MAX
Well...
EILEEN
Don't tell me he stopped hanging
out with you.
MAX
No. I stopped hanging out with him.
EILEEN
Why?
Max stands up.
MAX
I'm gay.
She shakes her head.
EILEEN
So?
Max scoffs.
MAX
I didn't want to hang out with him
anymore.
(he sits down again)
We used to have a friend, Jack, two
years ago, he came out.
EILEEN
What happened?
MAX
Desmond kicked the shit out of him,
I still don't get why. When he
found out that I was-
He stops.
EILEEN
What?
MAX
Nothing. Either way, he hates me
now too, it's strange.
EILEEN
That's ridiculous.
Max lifts his brow.
EILEEN (CONT'D) (cont'd)
(yelling)
So what is it?
Max stops.
MAX
What is what?
EILEEN
You kept staring at me. I take it
my looks isn't an excuse.
Eileen smiles.
MAX
No, no...they aren't. Sorry, I
didn't mean to stare.
EILEEN
So?
Max smiles insecurely.
MAX
It's nothing.
EILEEN
Come on, tell me. I bet you could
use conversation, you're white.
Max swallows.
MAX
It...Well.
Eileen walks towards him.
Max rolls his eyes.
Eileen sits down and looks at Max as he does the same.
EILEEN
Tell me.
MAX
You know that guy, the one you were
sitting with?
EILEEN
Seth.
MAX
Him.
(beat)
Well, I had this really disturbing
dream last night.
Eileen stares at him, interested.
MAX (cont'd)
And you were both in it.
Her eyes widen.
EILEEN
We were what-now?
(beat)
I was in it?
MAX
...yes. See, I don't know why I'm
even telling you.
EILEEN
No, it can be important.
Max stares at her, puzzled.
MAX
What, you believe in all those
things?
EILEEN
Sure...
(beat)
Was it like...really vivid? Like
you were there?
MAX
All dreams are aren't they?
EILEEN
...you're right.
(beat)
What happened, in your dream?
MAX
Why are you so interested?
Eileen smiles warmly.
EILEEN
Wouldn't you be? I want to know
what happened with me.
Max licks his lips.
MAX
Nothing, I just...remember your
face. And Seth's...that was even
stranger. In my dream, I looked
into a mirror and I saw Seth's
face. It was disturbing.
Eileen looks down for a minute and mouths words to herself.
EILEEN
Tell me something.
MAX
What is it?
EILEEN
Are you sure it was YOUR dream?
Max smiles, holding a laugh.
MAX
What?
EILEEN
Okay, are you sure it was your
point of vi-
(beat)
I don't know how to explain.
MAX
(standing up)
Don't, I need to go.
Eileen GRABS Max's sleeve.
EILEEN
No. I need you to stay here.
Max frowns.
MAX
No, I have to go to class.
EILEEN
Max, please.
MAX
Sorry, I need to go. Thanks for
helping me out though.
Max walks inside the building and checks his watch before
disappearing.
Moments later, Seth walks out of the building. Eileen's eyes
widen and stare at him, she stands up and goes meet him.
EILEEN
Seth!
He notices her, raises his eyebrows and stops.
SETH
Oh, what is it?
EILEEN
I need to talk to you. Do you have
any other class-
SETH
(interrupting her)
No wait. Before you go on, where do
I know you from?
Eileen stops.
EILEEN
I...what?
SETH
You were lying before, what with
that?
Eileen blows air.
EILEEN
Okay, sorry. I was.
(beat)
But it's really important.
SETH
What is it?
EILEEN
Where's Faye?
SETH
Why?
EILEEN
I'm not going to kidnap you, you
know?
SETH
I know, but what is it?
EILEEN
Both of you.
Seth rolls his eyes.
SETH
Just tell me. I'll tell her when
she's out.
Eileen takes a deep, exasperated breath and nods.
EILEEN
Okay, come on. I'll give you a
quick runthrough.
She begins walking away from the building, towards the
street. Seth follows her.
EILEEN (cont'd)
Are you out? Do you have any more
classes?
SETH
I'm out.
They stop at the curb and begin walking down the sidewalk.
EILEEN
What about Faye?
SETH
This is her last period.
Eileen nods.
EILEEN
Do you mind if we wait for her?
SETH
I thought it was really important.
Eileen opens her bag and nabs her cigarettes from inside. She
opens the flip top and offers one to Seth, who rejects it.
EILEEN
It is. But I rather have you both.
She sits down on the curb, next to a gutter. Seth remains
standing up.
EILEEN (cont'd)
Sit down.
Seth does, he sits down next to her and fixes his glare
forward, at a parked school bus parked opposite of him.
SETH
At least tell me what this is
about.
EILEEN
Okay. One thing, though, you'll
probably think that I'm a complete
nutcase when I tell you.
Seth chuckles.
SETH
I don't like where it's going.
Eileen laughs.
EILEEN
No but...I mean, just bare with me
here.
SETH
Whatever, sure. Go right ahead.
EILEEN
Do you remember your dreams
normally?
Seth raises his eyebrows.
SETH
I...what?
EILEEN
There you go. Okay, you know when
you sleep? You see this movie
thing? Those are called dream-
SETH
(interrupts)
Yeah, sorry.
(beat)
No, I don't really remember many
dreams. I mean, I have. But it's
rare.
EILEEN
What's the last time you remembered
a dream?
She taps the cigarette, a small pack of ash falls down the
wet gutter. She whiffs and puffs a cloud of gray smoke away
from Seth.
SETH
It was...
EILEEN
Last night right?
Seth stops. Turns to see Eileen, who smiles.
SETH
Right.
EILEEN
Here's where it gets strange...you
remember right? What happened?
Seth nods.
SETH
Yeah, it's the creepiest dream I've-
EILEEN
(interrupts)
I know what you dreamed about.
SETH
What?
EILEEN
I would bet, I know what happened
in your dream.
Seth raises his eyebrows again and scoffs.
SETH
Do you?
EILEEN
Yeeeap.
SETH
I'll bite. What happened?
EILEEN
You walked inside a house right? It
didn't look familiar or anything, I
think. You go upstairs and you find
Faye, dead.
Seth looks away from her and licks his lips.
SETH
I...
(beat)
Yeah...that's...pretty close.
EILEEN
I know. Who's the man?
SETH
You are, I guess.
(beat)
How did you know?
Eileen whiffs the cigarette one last time before dropping the
butt down the gutter.
EILEEN
I dreamed the same thing.
Seth looks at her, extremely puzzled.
EILEEN (cont'd)
Oh it gets stranger, but I'll leave
it here until Faye comes.
SETH
No, really, how did you know?
EILEEN
Pretty strange huh? I'll tell you,
just wait.
SETH
Does this have anything to do with
you telling me you were gonna help
me study chem?
EILEEN
It does.
(beat)
And sorry about that. How did you
do?
SETH
I did fine, I think.
(silence)
You know Faye, right?
EILEEN
I've talked to her.
SETH
Huh.
There is a long, uncomfortable silence. Seth taps the floor
with his foot, Eileen looks at all directions and yawns.
SETH (CONT'D) (cont'd)
So about my-
EILEEN
And you've known-
Both stop, Eileen laughs silently. Seth smiles.
SETH (CONT'D)
Sorry, you go.
She looks back at the school, then at Seth.
EILEEN
Nah, I was just trying to break the
uncomfortable silence.
SETH
(laughs)
Same here.
Both smile...then sigh.
Silence again.
CUT TO:
I/E. FORT MADISON HIGH SCHOOL - DAY
Faye walks out of a classroom among many others.
As she walks down the hall towards the exit, Max walks out of
another classroom and walks outside.
Faye stops at her locker, opens it up and stuffs her books
inside. She takes a purse and closes it. Then walks outside.
Outside, she glances around as many students pass her by. She
spots Seth and Eileen sitting on the curb. Seth looks back
and smiles. He stands up and walks towards her.
FAYE
Hey.
Seth kisses her.
SETH
What's up?
Eileen stands up and waves her fingers at Faye, who doesn't
answer.
FAYE
Nothing.
(to Eileen)
Hi.
EILEEN
Hello. Listen, you guys want to go
to a coffee shop, somewhere?
FAYE
What, now?
SETH
Sure, whatever.
Faye looks at Seth, puzzled.
FAYE
What? I thought you were going to
my mom's after school.
SETH
I am. It's just a quick coffee.
EILEEN
Right, just a pit stop.
Faye forces a smile and nods.
FAYE
Okay...I guess. Why are we going-
(beat)
I mean, why?
SETH
Anya here has something apparently
important to tell us.
FAYE
In the coffee shop?
EILEEN
Sure. Can we...go? We can take my
car, I'll drop you guys anywhere
after.
SETH
Okay, thanks...
EILEEN
Okay. Let's go.
Eileen walks towards her parked car and pulls out the keys
from her pants' pocket. Seth and Faye follow her.
FAYE
(whispering, to Seth)
What's this about?
SETH
Something to do with a dream. I
think.
Eileen looks at them.
FAYE
(whispering)
What?
Seth shrugs again.
Eileen opens the back door for them and walks around. They
all get in the car. Eileen gives ignition.
CUT TO:
INT. MAX'S HOUSE - ATTIC - DAY
The door of an attic opens and reveals Max, who hikes up
holding his backpack. The tidy room's walls are cold wood,
covered with dozens of carbon drawings. Cubist, dadaist and
even surrealist paintings wallpaper the room. A small cross
hangs on one of the walls, right over his bed.
Max closes the trapdoor and tosses his backpack to a corner.
He fetches a CD Walkman that lies next to a plugged laptop
and puts the headphones on. Music begins playing. There is an
unfinished canvas laying on the floor.
He sits on his bed and opens a small circular window. Takes a
sheet of Fabrianno paper from a notebook and fishes a carbon
stick from a cloth bag that hangs next to the bed.
He draws a spiral on the paper, big enough to take almost the
entire sheet. Then, he runs his right hand across it, making
it fade sideward slightly.
He closes his eyes and takes a deep, comfortable breath. The
sheet of paper slides down as he lies back and places his
head on the pillow.
Someone knocks from underneath.
SARAH (O.S.)
Max?
Max doesn't react. The music is too loud.
SARAH (22) opens the door and peeks through.
SARAH (CONT'D) (cont'd)
Max!
Max turns and sees her. He takes the headset off.
MAX
Oh what's up?
SARAH
Oh nothing. How long have you been
here?
He sits up on the bed.
MAX
About five...seconds.
SARAH
Oh, okay.
(beat)
Listen. I have this interview thing
in ten minutes. If you go out,
lock.
MAX
Lock in the event of a fire. Got
it.
Sarah laughs.
SARAH
It wouldn't do much harm to go see
a movie. Even by yourself.
MAX
I...no, I don't even have a cent.
SARAH
Right, right. I haven't...here.
(she reaches for a 10
dollar bill from her
pocket)
Here's a ten.
Max shakes his head.
MAX
Oh no. Thanks but, no thanks.
SARAH
Oh...okay. Anyway, I'll be back at
around seven.
She begins stepping down the ladder.
MAX
I met someone today.
Sarah stops and smiles.
SARAH
Yeah? Who?
MAX
A girl, Anya.
SARAH
That's great. Was she nice?
MAX
Yeah. I liked her.
SARAH
What was she like?
MAX
She was older. Pretty. I don't
know, she was warm. I talked to her
like I had known her for years.
SARAH
I'm glad. I'd like to meet her.
Max nods and tips a smile.
SARAH (cont'd)
See you later.
Sarah winks and closes the door after going down the stairs.
Max puts the headset back on and again leans on the bed. He
falls asleep.
CUT TO:
INT. COFFEE HOUSE - DAY
The quiet coffee shop is full of customers. Eileen, Seth and
Faye sit on one of the corners. Faye and Eileen are sipping
their coffee.
EILEEN
...so what you dreamed, it did
happen.
(beat)
I mean, it WILL happen.
FAYE
I don't get it.
EILEEN
I know. I know.
SETH
Wait, are you kidding or...
Eileen raises her eyebrows.
EILEEN
No, I'm serious. Serious-serious.
(beat)
I don't know how to get it through.
SETH
Just...okay, let me get it
straight.
EILEEN
Okay.
SETH
So Faye is going to die.
Faye takes a deep breath and sips her coffee again.
EILEEN
Yes.
SETH
And you are telling me this...
EILEEN
Because I'll stop that from
happening.
SETH
And you dreamed the same?
EILEEN
Only a bit. A different part of
what you got.
Faye puts the mug down.
FAYE
What did you get?
EILEEN
Seth, entering the house. Then a
flash of...
(levers her hand)
Of you.
SETH
What else?
EILEEN
Nothing else. Just that bit. But
see, another bit is missing from
the full thing.
FAYE
Wait, you lost me again.
Eileen nods.
EILEEN
Okay, okay. Think of it like...the
reel of a movie. It's this full
video. When Seth sent full video
back, the reel got cut into three,
not more than four bits.
SETH
And we only get a part.
EILEEN
Yes.
FAYE
But wait. How do you know about
this? And who got the other bit?
EILEEN
Right, wait. Some people are just
naturally more...we have
more...affinity. It's more likely
for some people to receive them.
SETH
So this isn't the first time you
get one?
Eileen shakes her head. Her playful attitude seems to have
been drained out of her.
EILEEN
No, I get these memories often. But
I only...well...help the ones I
can.
SETH
How did you know it was mine?
EILEEN
Yours? Your what?
SETH
I mean, how did you know that I was
the one who sent it?
EILEEN
Oh! Right. Well, I've learnt to
search for clues, right? With you
it was easier. First off, you
yelled Faye's name at some point.
You also passed in front of a
mirror. I recognized you.
SETH
I...don't know.
FAYE
And what do you want us to do?
EILEEN
Believing me would make a good
start.
Seth spits an honest chuckle.
SETH
Any idea on who got the rest of it?
EILEEN
Max did.
Faye frowns.
FAYE
Max?
SETH
(to Eileen)
Him?
FAYE
Who is he?
SETH
You know that kid in school, took
math with us last semester. Gay?
FAYE
I think I know who you mean.
EILEEN
I talked to him today, he told me
he had a dream that, well, you
know.
Silence.
EILEEN (cont'd)
He also said that I was in his
dream. That he saw a glimpse of me.
SETH
Of YOU?
EILEEN
Yes. I know...it's really strange.
For some reason I was with you when
you sent it.
(beat)
Max couldn't have been lying.
SETH
So you're not kidding.
EILEEN
I thought I had covered that.
Seth shakes his head quickly.
SETH
But you're serious? Faye's in
trouble? Do you know what happened
to her?
Eileen shakes her head, "no".
FAYE
I don't believe you.
EILEEN
I thought you wouldn't.
SETH
You're not lying, I know that.
FAYE
What?
(beat)
How are we supposed to believe you?
SETH
(to Eileen)
I believe you.
Faye licks her lips and shakes her head mildly.
FAYE
No.
EILEEN
I understand. I know it's weird.
FAYE
It's not weird, it's stupid.
EILEEN
I know.
SETH
It is, Faye. But what if she's
right?
Faye sits back and scoffs nervously.
FAYE
You're insane.
Seth chuckles and turns to Eileen.
SETH
What do you want me to do.
FAYE
We're not doing a thing. This is
crazy.
Eileen stuffs her hand inside her schoolbag and pulls out the
doodled sheet of paper she wrote Seth's name on. She also
nabs a pen, which she uncaps. Eileen writes down Max's name
on the sheet.
EILEEN
What's your phone number?
FAYE
What for?
EILEEN
I'll need it.
SETH
...555-3234.
She scribbles it down and checks her watch. Outside, the sun
has began hiding.
EILEEN
Here.
She begins scribbling down a cell phone number on a corner of
the sheet of paper. Then tears it off and slides it to Seth.
EILEEN (cont'd)
Here. It's my cell-phone number if
you need it.
Seth takes the small torn piece of paper and puts it in his
pocket.
SETH
Okay.
EILEEN
I need to go home. But I need to
tell you some things. I also need
to contact Max.
FAYE
Why, what does he know?
EILEEN
That's why I need to find him. Do
you have his number?
Both shake their heads.
SETH
No.
Eileen stands up.
EILEEN
Let's go. Where do you want me to
drop you?
Seth stands up and helps Faye. She looks under the weather.
SETH
School.
FAYE
Home.
Eileen laughs.
SETH
Can you do both?
EILEEN
Sure. Which one's closer?
FAYE
My house.
SETH
Right.
EILEEN
Just tell me where it is. Let's go.
They all take their backpacks and begin walking out. Faye
stops for a second and stops Seth. Eileen keeps walking,
looks back at her companions, and walks through the main
door.
FAYE
Seth, wait.
SETH
What is it?
FAYE
I don't like her.
Seth looks at Eileen through the glass door. She is waiting
outside the shop.
SETH
Anya?
FAYE
I don't like her.
SETH
Why?
FAYE
She wants something with you. She's
making this all up.
SETH
I thought the same thing, you know?
But...
She shakes her head.
FAYE
Please tell me you don't believe
her.
Seth takes a deep breath.
SETH
I don't know. She was pretty
convincing.
She shakes her head in disappointment and continues walking.
SETH (cont'd)
(stops her)
I won't let her do anything to you.
FAYE
It's not me who I'm worried about.
She walks outside. Seth stands there for a second and looks
to the right. A small table of teenagers are staring at him.
SETH
Can I help you?
They all turn back to their business. Seth walks out.
CUT TO:
INT. MAX'S HOUSE - TELEVISION ROOM - NIGHT
Max is sitting on a couch, remote control in hand. The
television blares at high volume in front of him. His eyes
are half closed, his mouth open.
Sarah unlocks the main door and walks inside.
SARAH
Max. Home.
Max swallows thick saliva and shifts his eyes from the
television to Sarah, who enters the room holding grocery
bags.
SARAH (cont'd)
God, I hate it when it's night so
early.
Max yawns.
MAX
How'd it go?
SARAH
It went fine, thanks.
She walks towards the kitchen and flicks the lights on. Max
stands up and begins following her.
MAX
Oh, Sarah?
SARAH
Yeah.
She begins placing the groceries in their respective places.
MAX
Do you know where's that album I
had? I was looking for it.
SARAH
I think mom kept it in the chest in
her room. Did you look there?
He looks down.
MAX
Um...no.
There is a silence. Each expect the other to say something.
SARAH
Well?
MAX
Um, Sarah?
SARAH
What is it?
MAX
Would you...get it for me? Please?
Sarah closes her eyes and takes a deep breath.
SARAH
Why?
MAX
I don't want to go there...that's
all.
She nods.
SARAH
Okay.
She walks towards the staircase and takes the flight
upstairs.
Max stands there, squeezing his left biceps with his right
hand.
MAX
Thanks.
SARAH
Don't worry about it.
She enters a room.
Max walks inside the kitchen and continues placing the
groceries where they belong. Cartons of milk inside the
fridge, a box of cereal inside a cupboard.
Sarah walks down the stairs holding a big photo album. He
gives it to Max.
MAX
Thanks.
SARAH
You're welcome. But someday you'll
have to be able to go in there.
MAX
I know.
He goes back to the TV room and turns the set off. The book
he holds is thick, coated with cheap imitation of leather.
He opens it and flips through the pages, randomly browsing
the images. Some of them have him, Sarah and an older woman,
their mother.
He stops when spotting a lonely picture of himself, Desmond
and a third kid, JACK (16).
All looking younger and dressed in football gear and uniform.
They all hold their helmets with their hands.
Sarah walks into the room holding a mug of coffee.
SARAH
Max?
Max looks up. Tears have left wet tracks on his face.
MAX
(sniffles)
Yeah.
She sits next to him and looks at the picture.
SARAH
You should have stayed in the team.
Looked so good in that uniform. You
looked stronger.
He laughs.
MAX
I was.
SARAH
When was this taken?
Max closes the book.
MAX
Two years ago.
She smiles.
SARAH
Open it.
MAX
What?
SARAH
The book.
He swallows and sniffles and opens the book again, right in
the page that holds the picture of a happier, stronger Max
and his pals.
MAX
What is it?
SARAH
Nothing. I just like that picture
of you.
(beat)
Jack looked good too.
He tries to close it again, she stops him.
SARAH (cont'd)
Why did you bring this out?
MAX
Just wanted to see something.
SARAH
Someone, right? You wanted to see
Jack? Desmond?
MAX
Both.
She smiles again and nods.
SARAH
Knew it. Take a good look, Maxie.
He does.
SARAH (cont'd)
We're alike, you know?
MAX
(smiles)
How?
She closes the book.
SARAH
When mom died, I kept looking at
our pictures, and doing it hurt me.
But that's the best way to forget
about her. You need to remember
them.
MAX
Okay.
SARAH
Okay? No, look...
(takes a deep breath)
Keep those memories close. But
don't live on them.
MAX
He isn't.
SARAH
Remember how it was and don't wish
that it would be like that again,
because it can't. Try to build
something new.
MAX
I know.
SARAH
I don't think you've stepped inside
her room since she died, Maxie.
MAX
I know.
SARAH
Do that.
Max stretches and opens his eyes wide.
MAX
I'm going to bed.
He walks up the stairs. Sarah is left sitting down on the
couch. She opens the book and looks at the image of the
stronger Max. A tear begins swelling up in her eye.
CUT TO:
EXT. FAYE'S HOUSE - PORCH - NIGHT
Eileen's car stops in front of a large enough house. Seth
walks out and opens the door for Faye. They both walk to the
porch.
SETH
(kissing her)
Bye, baby.
FAYE
Bye.
Faye opens the door with a key she pulled out from her jeans'
pocket. Seth sees her walk inside and turns around, back to
the car.
FAYE (cont'd)
Seth?
He turns back.
SETH
Yeah?
FAYE
Just...
She looks at Eileen. She's listening to music from the car's
radio and mouthing the lyrics.
FAYE (cont'd)
...nevermind. I'll see you
tomorrow.
Seth nods and tips her a wink. She smiles and puts her finger
on her mouth, "Shh," before closing the door.
He walks back to the car and gets in. Eileen turns the volume
of the music down.
EILEEN
She was angry.
SETH
Yeah.
EILEEN
I want to ask you a question.
She gives ignition.
SETH
What is it?
She drives off.
EILEEN
Do you really believe me?
Seth exhales and looks downward.
SETH
I wouldn't, I mean...I don't know.
Eileen nods.
EILEEN
That's the closest to a 'yes'
anyone's ever said. Faye...she's
just scared.
SETH
Probably.
EILEEN
Yeah. Some creep comes and tells
her she's going to die...
SETH
And what's worse is that I halfway
believed the creep.
Eileen laughs.
EILEEN
I needed to ask you though, you
took it in very fast.
Seth sighs.
SETH
I know.
Eileen stares at him, glancing at the road every few seconds.
SETH (cont'd)
It made sense. The house I saw her
in? That's my uncle's house. He's
in Maine right now. The house is
empty.
Eileen nods.
EILEEN
So that's the place.
SETH
I guess I'm not going there.
Eileen laughs.
EILEEN
Better not. Hey, do you mind if I
stop a second at my place?
SETH
Um, no, not at all.
EILEEN
Thanks, it's just that I'm going to
sleep to a friend's and I need to
pick up a few things.
SETH
That's all right.
Silence. Eileen turns up the volume.
EILEEN
You know, I rarely see you at
school.
SETH
(smiles)
Yeah, I know.
Silence again. The music blares from the speakers. Eileen
twitches.
SETH (cont'd)
So where do you live?
EILEEN
Apartment building I just moved in,
on Connor.
Seth raises his eyebrows.
SETH
Really? I live two blocks away.
EILEEN
Ha, how strange.
(beat)
And, how do you go to school?
SETH
How what?
EILEEN
Sorry.
(laughs)
Do you drive there?
SETH
Oh! No. I ride, a bike.
Eileen looks at him, silence.
SETH (cont'd)
...which I left there today.
Dammit.
EILEEN
Yeah, that's where I was going.
Don't worry though, if you want
I'll drive you tomorrow.
Seth smiles.
EILEEN (cont'd)
Here we are.
She stops in front of the same rundown apartment building she
lives in. She gets out of the car.
EILEEN (cont'd)
Come in, it'll just be a sec.
Seth nods and steps out of the car.
CUT TO:
INT. EILEEN'S FLAT - NIGHT
Eileen unlocks the door to her apartment and walks in.
EILEEN
Come on.
Seth steps inside.
SETH
(looks around)
Nice place. Who else lives here?
EILEEN
My roommate.
Seth stops.
SETH
(whispering)
She here?
EILEEN
Don't think so.
SYLVIA (O.S.)
(from her room)
I am, Anya.
Seth whimpers.
EILEEN
Okay.
She walks towards her room and walks in. Seth slowly makes
his way through the boxes. The room is a complete mess.
Eileen opens a clothing drawer and stuffs some clothes inside
her school backpack.
Seth browses the room with his eyes. A drawer in her desk is
half open, sheets of paper are randomly tossed inside.
EILEEN (cont'd)
I'll be right back, hold on.
Seth nods and she walks out. The drawer calls Seth, he peeks
through, the papers inside resemble the one she wrote Seth's
name and number on. All of them are creased, weird designs
and mental maps drawn on them. As well as names.
EILEEN (O.S.) (cont'd)
Sylvia, I'm going to sleep at a
friend's.
SYLVIA (O.S.)
You still haven't given me the
money.
EILEEN (O.S.)
Sorry about that.
He opens the drawer and pulls out the bundled sheets of
paper. Names are written on each, some have phone numbers.
"Annie Dana" and a phone number, "555-6623".
"Jimmy Owen, 555-8129". "Theresa Williams, 555-2193". "Cliff
McNamara, 555-6744".
Seth flips the pages, Eileen walks inside and grabs her bag.
EILEEN (CONT'D) (cont'd)
Ready. Let's go.
SETH
(re: the papers)
What are these?
EILEEN
Oh. That's my history. People I've
helped.
SETH
It's worked, then?
EILEEN
Oh, sure.
Seth nods as he flips the pages.
EILEEN (cont'd)
I think it only takes a small
warning, that would be enough to
change whatever's going to happen.
SETH
So?
EILEEN
I like to make sure.
SETH
Huh.
(beat)
Why do you keep these?
EILEEN
(leaving the room)
I used to browse through them, some
odd nostalgia, I guess. Met a lot
of people doing this. Friends.
He smiles.
SETH
Do you still see them?
EILEEN
Well, I move all the time. I can't
stand too much in the same place.
SETH
Who pays for all this?
EILEEN
My dad. He lives in Arkansas, he's
pretty wealthy. Guy can get me
flats almost everywhere.
SETH
That's sounds like a lot of fun.
EILEEN
It is. Gosh, I haven't called him
in a long while...maybe I should.
SETH
How long's it been since you talked
to him?
EILEEN
A while. He hooked me this flat a
while ago but I talk more with his
secretary than with him directly.
SETH
I see. And your mom?
EILEEN
Oh, no. She died in a skiing
accident, some time ago.
SETH
I'm sorry.
EILEEN
Don't worry about it. Done? Let's
go.
Seth nods and Eileen leaves the room. Seth flips the pages
and reaches the last one. He looks at it, his eyes widen. The
page is just the same as the rest, except this one has a
familiar name. The page says "Anya" and a phone number.
Puzzled, Seth stares at it, then at Eileen, who presses the
elevator button down the hallway outside.
Seth stuffs the sheet of paper inside his pocket and puts the
rest back inside the drawer. He joins Eileen in front of the
elevator.
CUT TO:
INT. FAYE'S HOUSE - MASTER ROOM - NIGHT
Faye is laying on a bed, her head placed over MINA's (41)
lap. The television is on in front of them. Faye's eyes are
half closed. She might start z-ing anytime. Both wear similar
silk pajamas.
MINA
It's late.
FAYE
Mm-hmm.
MINA
Any homework?
FAYE
Nothing.
Silence, the eyes of both are fixed on the television.
MINA
So where did you go?
FAYE
Coffee place.
MINA
Right after school?
FAYE
Mm-hmm.
MINA
With who?
FAYE
Whom.
Mina slaps Faye's neck jokingly. Both laugh silently. Mina
begins twisting her daughter's hair with her fingers.
MINA
With whom? Seth?
FAYE
Seth and some girl.
MINA
Who?
FAYE
A girl from school, Anya.
MINA
Nice?
FAYE
Sure.
Mina takes a deep breath.
MINA
All right kid, bed.
FAYE
Aw, fine.
Faye gets off the bed.
MINA
Oh forgot to ask. How was your
appointment with doc yesterday?
FAYE
Same thing as always.
Faye sits back down on the bed.
FAYE (cont'd)
He doesn't strike me as a qualified
whatever he is. Most of the time
I'm sitting in front of him and he
just stares.
MINA
Dr. Nolan's one of the best
therapists you can find.
She chuckles.
FAYE
They all are, right?
Mina smiles at her.
FAYE (cont'd)
Well, night.
MINA
Good night.
Faye stands up and walks outside and down a hallway. She
opens the door that reveals the blankest room you have ever
seen. Absolutely nothing on the walls or gray carpeted floor.
Her school stuff is kept over a small wooden desk opposite to
her bed.
She enters the bathroom and stares at herself in the mirror
for a moment. She looks at her wrists, taps them slowly. She
has barely noticeable scars on her wrists.
After leaving the bathroom, she dives into her sheets and
flicks the lights off. Absolute black.
CUT TO:
INT. EILEEN'S CAR - NIGHT
Eileen drives.
SETH
So...
(beat)
How do you send these?
EILEEN
I...still don't know for sure.
She takes a deep breath.
EILEEN (cont'd)
You know deja vus?
SETH
Sure.
EILEEN
When you feel you've seen something
before?
SETH
I know what they are.
EILEEN
They are this. When you...you
really wish something hadn't
happened, that...information,
image, whatever, is...
(beat)
How to explain...well, tossed
either back or forth.
SETH
Why during sleep?
EILEEN
I really don't know. The most
logical explanation I've come up
with is that...well, when you're
asleep, your mind's somewhere else,
very concentrated.
Seth shakes his head.
SETH
And deja vus?
EILEEN
Most times people don't pay
attention to their dreams. But when
the thing they saw in their dream,
what they received, happens, well,
it looks familiar.
SETH
And they can be thrown to the
future as well?
EILEEN
It's something random. It just
lands close to the event, when
you're dreaming.
(beat)
Sometimes you feel you dream
something that has happened.
SETH
So this is involuntary? You don't
know they're being sent?
Eileen nods.
EILEEN
Right. Some people do it more
often. Most don't even notice.
Seth raises his eyebrows and nods.
SETH
Makes sense.
EILEEN
Well I don't know.
Seth nods and looks outside through the window.
SETH
So, where are you from? You have an
odd name.
EILEEN
I was born in Minnesota, I think.
But my name's Eileen.
SETH
Eileen?
EILEEN
Yeah.
SETH
I thought it was Anya.
EILEEN
No, a friend began calling me Anya
some time ago.
SETH
Why?
Eileen stays quiet.
EILEEN
I...don't remember.
Eileen laughs.
SETH
What?
EILEEN
Yeah, I...I don't remember,
actually. How strange.
SETH
And this friend, does he live here?
EILEEN
He's a she. Carol. And no, she
lives a few cities away.
SETH
Oh, okay.
Seth points at his house.
SETH (cont'd)
Right here.
EILEEN
Okay.
She parks in front of his house.
EILEEN (cont'd)
So you want me to give you a ride
tomorrow?
He walks out of the car.
SETH
I...I guess my mom can drive me
tomorrow, thanks.
EILEEN
I really don't mind, you're close
by my place.
Seth closes the door of the car.
SETH
No, it's fine. Thanks for the ride.
EILEEN
See you tomorrow.
SETH
Yeah.
Seth waves away and she drives off. He glues his stare at the
car as it takes a left and disappears behind a house down the
street.
Seth turns around and walks down a pathway that leads to the
house's main door. He opens it with a key and walks inside.
He closes the door behind him and walks up the stairs. He
stops in front of a door, which she opens and peeks inside.
It's dark. Joan is sleeping on the bed.
SETH (cont'd)
Mom?
Joan pries her eyes open.
JOAN
Seth?
Her voice is raspy, tired.
SETH
I'm home. Going to sleep now.
JOAN
Where did you go?
SETH
With Faye. Sorry I didn't call.
JOAN
That's okay.
SETH
Where's my dad?
JOAN
He's in the bathroom.
SETH
Oh. Okay. Good night.
JOAN
Sleep tight.
She closes her eyes again. Her son closes the door silently
and makes his way down the dark hallway. Framed pictures of
him and his parents, of him and Faye and others hang from the
wall.
He opens the door of his room and walks inside. The room is a
fairly typical teenager room. Movie posters and a calendar
take over most of the wall decoration. There is a shelf with
DVDs and novels nailed to the wall over his bed. He has a
small wooden cross hanging from another wall.
He flicks the light off and takes his shirt off. Before
taking his pants off, he sits down on the bed and pulls out
both sheets of Eileen's sheets of paper and puts it on a
cupboard next to his bed.
A long stare at them is followed by him grabbing the phone
and dialing the number under "Eileen"'s name in the big sheet
of paper he stole from her drawer.
A woman picks up. Her voice is completely different from
Eileen's.
ANASTASIA
(over the phone)
Hello?
Seth swallows and licks his lips.
SETH
Hi, is this...Anya?
ANASTASIA
(over)
Who is this?
SETH
Seth...you don't know me.
ANASTASIA
(over)
Why did you call me?
SETH
I know a friend of yours, she gave
me your number.
ANASTASIA
(over)
Who?
SETH
Anya?
A silence, a sigh from Anastasia.
ANASTASIA
(over)
Who is this?
SETH
My name is Seth.
ANASTASIA
(over)
The only Anya I know is me.
Seth stays silent.
SETH
Wait, your name is Anya?
ANASTASIA
(over)
...no. It's Anastasia. They call me
Anya.
Seth's eyes widen in puzzlement.
SETH
Why?
ANASTASIA
(over)
A friend began calling me Anya
because of that disney movie.
Seth stays quiet.
ANASTASIA (cont'd)
(over)
...yeah. Who are you?
SETH
I...You're friends with Carol,
right? I know her.
ANASTASIA
(over)
Oh! Are you Lindsay's ex? Seth?
SETH
I'm...yeah, Lindsay's ex...Doesn't
matter, I need to ask you
something.
ANASTASIA
What is it?
SETH
I'm looking for someone, I think
you knew her. She's around 18 or 19
now. I think she helped you with a
problem you had.
ANASTASIA
(over)
I don't know what you're talking
about.
SETH
Has someone ever told you some
stuff about dreams? Maybe recently.
Anastasia remains silent.
SETH (cont'd)
Hello?
ANASTASIA
(over)
Yeah, a few months ago. Look, I
need to go.
SETH
Wait. Who told you this? A girl,
right?
ANASTASIA
(over)
Yes.
SETH
Was her name Eileen?
ANASTASIA
(over)
Yes. I really need to go.
SETH
Right, sorry to bother you.
Dial tone, she hung up. Seth sits on his bed silently,
somewhat scared. He begins dialing another number.
A girl picks up, Faye. Her voice is tired, half asleep.
FAYE
Hello?
SETH
Faye.
FAYE
Oh, what's up?
SETH
Listen, tomorrow morning, wait for
me. Don't go anywhere near Anya.
FAYE
What? Why? What happened?
SETH
Something's wrong. She wasn't lying
with what she told us...but
something's up with her.
FAYE
Why are you telling me this?
SETH
Don't get scared, I just need to
ask her some things.
FAYE
No, of course I'm scared. What
happened?
SETH
I think she said she is passing for
someone else.
FAYE
What?
SETH
Her real name is Eileen, not Anya.
FAYE
Yeah?
SETH
Just...I'll explain tomorrow. See
you outside school. Don't get
scared.
FAYE
I am.
Seth stays silent for a second.
SETH
Really?
FAYE
Yes.
Seth looks at his clothes and ponders.
SETH
Okay, I'm going to your place. Wait
for me.
FAYE
Okay.
SETH
Don't worry, it's probably nothing.
FAYE
Sure. Hurry up.
Seth hangs up and gets dressed again. He walks out silently.
CUT TO:
EXT. FORT MADISON HIGH SCHOOL - MORNING
Like the day before, students walk towards and around the
school. Some sit on their cars and have a smoke.
Eileen's car makes her way through the people and cars and
stops. She gets out.
Her eyes shift from one side to the next, looking for
someone.
Before entering the building, she glances at the spot where
she saw Max the day before. Bingo. He is there, sitting on
one of the benches.
She smiles and walk towards him. He notices her and awkwardly
smiles.
EILEEN
Hi Max.
MAX
Hi.
EILEEN
Can I sit down?
Max slides down the bench.
MAX
Go ahead.
EILEEN
(smiling)
Thanks.
She takes a seat.
EILEEN (cont'd)
So what's up?
MAX
Nothing, just here, waiting.
EILEEN
For what?
MAX
Class.
EILEEN
(shakes her head)
Duh, right.
Both remain silent.
EILEEN (cont'd)
Hey, remember what we were talking
about yesterday?
MAX
Yes?
EILEEN
I need to ask you something.
MAX
What is it?
EILEEN
What happened in that dream you saw
me and Seth?
MAX
I told you. I only remember a small
bit. I entered some house,
and...there was a phone ringing, I
think. I saw you inside the
kitchen.
EILEEN
Anything else?
MAX
Nothing I can remember.
Eileen takes a deep breath and opens her bag. She fishes out
the sheet of paper with Max and Seth's names and phone
numbers. Pressing the paper on a book, she writes: "What
happened--" and begins scribbling down the events of the
dream. Max peeks at what she's writing.
MAX (cont'd)
What are you doing?
She stops and looks at him.
EILEEN
Nothing. I need to...
Max's eyes are fixed on hers.
MAX
What?
EILEEN
Can I tell you something you won't
believe?
Max laughs.
MAX
What?
EILEEN
It's about your dream.
MAX
Okay?
EILEEN
That dream...it's...it's not a
dream, it's something that's going
to happen.
Max doesn't react.
Desmond's car appears from behind a corner. He is driving,
Faye sits on the back seat.
DESMOND
Are you going out tonight?
FAYE
I don't think so.
DESMOND
Why?
FAYE
Because.
DESMOND
You're not going to see Seth or
anything?
FAYE
Maybe, I don't know.
They park their car. Desmond gets out.
FAYE (cont'd)
Thanks.
Desmond doesn't answer, he closes his door and goes greet his
friends.
Faye opens the door and gets out. Seth appears and helps her
out.
FAYE (cont'd)
Thanks.
SETH
Welcome.
FAYE
Who brought you here?
SETH
My mom drove me, got here five
minutes ago.
Faye nods.
SETH (cont'd)
You have class right now, right?
FAYE
Yes.
SETH
Okay, here's the deal. You go to
that class, I'll go look for Anya.
I need to ask her a few.
FAYE
I thought you said her name's
Eileen.
Seth shakes his head.
SETH
Right, Eileen. Sorry. Come on.
They begin walking towards the entrance.
Eileen and Max are still sitting on the bench, talking.
MAX
I don't understand.
Eileen laughs.
EILEEN
Man, how many times have I heard
that this week?
MAX
Well sorry, your story is pretty
confusing. Why are you telling it
to me?
EILEEN
Not a story.
Max turns down and scoffs.
MAX
Maybe...
EILEEN
I don't know. You look like a nice
guy.
MAX
Do I?
EILEEN
Sure. But you're reserved, right?
MAX
I guess so.
EILEEN
Handsome guys shouldn't be.
Max laughs.
EILEEN (cont'd)
I'm sure lots of girls and guys
find you handsome.
MAX
This is awkward.
EILEEN
Sorry. That came out of nowhere.
Eileen's laugh is retorted by a sigh from Max. The bell
rings, people begin rushing down and enter the building in a
hurry.
EILEEN (cont'd)
So you don't have class now?
MAX
No.
EILEEN
What's your first class?
MAX
Second period.
Seth walks out of the building, looking for Eileen. He spots
her. She spots him back.
EILEEN
Oh look. Here's Seth.
Max doesn't say anything. Seth stops in front of them.
SETH
Eileen, I need to talk to you.
MAX
(to Eileen)
"Eileen"?
SETH
Hey Max.
EILEEN
What is it?
SETH
Do you know a girl called
Anastasia?
EILEEN
No, I...
Eileen stays quiet. Then it hits her, she widens her eyes.
SETH
Who is she?
EILEEN
Anastasia...she was a girl I helped
some time ago.
SETH
What else do you remember?
Eileen doesn't speak.
MAX
Who's Anastasia?
SETH
They called her Anya.
Seth shows her the sheet of paper he stole from her drawer.
She reads it. "Anya", it reads.
MAX
What the hell's going on?
Eileen is silent, almost in shock. She takes the sheet of
paper from Seth.
SETH
(to Eileen)
Who's Anya?
Eileen's head begins shaking. She grabs her things and stands
up.
EILEEN
I need to go.
She begins walking away.
SETH
Hold on, where are you going?
EILEEN
There's someone I need to call.
She leaves quickly; her face is that of shock.
SETH
Wait!
Eileen doesn't stop, she begins running towards her car.
SETH (cont'd)
Dammit.
MAX
Seth?
Seth turns around.
SETH
Yeah.
MAX
What just happened?
Seth shakes his head and takes a deep breath.
SETH
Do you know her?
MAX
Anya?
SETH
Her name's Eileen.
MAX
She said her name was Anya.
SETH
It isn't. Anyway, you were talking
to her, right?
Max nods.
MAX
Something about dreams, receiving
someone else's memories, something.
Seth wipes his hand down his face.
SETH
Yeah. She said the same thing to
me. Explained the whole deal.
Max nods.
SETH (cont'd)
So, did you believe her?
Max shakes his head.
MAX
Not really.
(beat)
But I like talking to her, she's
very nice.
MAX (cont'd)
Why did she run away?
Seth checks his watch.
SETH
We need to go to his place. You
too. Do you have a car?
Max shakes his head.
SETH (cont'd)
We'll have to take a cab, or
something.
MAX
Faye too?
Seth nods, licking his lips.
SETH
Yeah.
MAX
I have class.
SETH
Ditch. Just for today.
(beat)
We need to wait until Faye's out, I
won't leave her here.
Max stays silent and shrugs. Seth checks his watch again.
CUT TO:
INT. EILEEN'S FLAT - ROOM - MORNING
Eileen is sitting on the floor, tucked in the corner of the
room like a shadow. She talking over the phone. Her voice is
anxiety, fear, sadness.
EILEEN
Dad?
Her father, KEVIN's voice is concerned.
KEVIN
(over)
Eileen, are you all right?
EILEEN
My mom.
KEVIN
(over)
She's right here, what is it?
EILEEN
(to herself)
She's alive?
Eileen squeezes her eyes, a tear streams down her cheek. She
cups her hand over her mouth and jerks her neck.
KEVIN
Eileen?
She begins shaking her head.
EILEEN
I'll-
(sniffles)
I'll call you later.
KEVIN
Wait, are you okay?
EILEEN
I'm fine.
KEVIN
What happe-
She hangs up and stands up, leaning against the wall. Tears
keep flowing.
The phone rings again. She shakes her head and unplugs the
line. She falls on her bed and digs her face on the sheets.
Sobbing can be heard.
Outside her room, Sylvia opens the main door and walks in
holding a bottle of shampoo with one hand and a bag of
groceries with the other. Her lips squeeze a lit cigarette.
She closes the door and walks inside.
She opens the door to her room but stops when she notices
Eileen on her bed.
SYLVIA
Anya?
Eileen doesn't answer. Sylvia realizes that Eileen is crying
and silently enters her own room.
Inside her dark room, Sylvia sits down on a small couch and
turns the television on. She puts out the cigarette and nabs
another from the flip top. She lights it.
She stares at the door of her room, thinking. Then shifts her
eyes to the television.
The doorbell. Sylvia takes a deep breath and stands up. She
opens the of her room and walks towards the main door. She
opens it.
Seth, Faye and Max wait on the other side.
SYLVIA (cont'd)
Yes?
SETH
Excuse me, is Eileen here?
SYLVIA
Eileen...Oh yeah, Anya. She's here.
Seth shakes his head.
SETH
Sorry, yeah, Anya. Is she here?
Sylvia looks back. Eileen is standing up in her room.
SYLVIA
Yes. But she's a little under the
weather.
Eileen walks out of her room, dried tear tracks marked on
both cheeks.
EILEEN
Come in.
SYLVIA
(to Eileen)
Are you okay?
Eileen nods. Sylvia moves to one side and lets the trio
through.
FAYE
(to Sylvia)
Thanks.
MAX
(to Sylvia)
Thanks.
Sylvia nods with a smile.
All three of them make their way to Eileen's room.
Once they're all in, Eileen points at the door.
EILEEN
Please close it.
Sylvia peeks quickly before Seth slams the door shut.
SETH
What happened?
Eileen sits down on the bed.
EILEEN
I don't know...something isn't
right.
SETH
Tell us.
Eileen sniffles and swallows.
EILEEN
Remember what I told you about my
mom?
SETH
She died, right?
FAYE
I'm sorry.
Eileen shakes her head.
EILEEN
No...don't worry.
(beat)
I talked with my father...he said
that my mom is alive.
SETH
What?
EILEEN
She didn't die, she has never even
skied in her life.
SETH
Why did you tell me-
EILEEN
Some things...I move a lot, I don't
know many people very well.
Max is standing up, his eyes go from Eileen to the sky behind
the window outside. It's like he is alone, the other's voices
don't seem to make a sound.
EILEEN (cont'd)
I think...some of the memories I
have, mine, aren't even mine.
Seth's eyes widen.
EILEEN (cont'd)
I'm bombarded with other peoples'
memories, friends, things. All the
time.
SETH
And you...
EILEEN
Someone else's mother died
skiing...Not mine. Someone I met
before.
Max's eyes fix on Eileen's. She cups her hand over her mouth
again.
EILEEN (cont'd)
I don't know what's mine and what
isn't.
SETH
That's why you thought they called
you Anya. You don't know a Carol.
For a moment, Eileen doesn't react; she then shakes her head.
EILEEN
But, I remember being with her, I
have memories of being with her.
She was my friend.
SETH
It was Anastasia's friend, not
yours.
Eileen falls on her bed, shaking her head.
Max looks at her.
MAX
What are you doing?
Eileen doesn't answer. She is lost, looking down.
SETH
We still need your help. We can't
waste time with your-
MAX
It's not wasting time, Seth. Look
at her.
Eileen nods pathetically.
EILEEN
Okay...okay. You're right, sorry.
SETH
What do you want us to do?
She stands up.
EILEEN
(to Seth)
You said the house was your
uncle's?
Seth nods.
EILEEN (cont'd)
Do you mind if I write down the
house's phone number?
Seth shakes his head.
EILEEN (cont'd)
Please. If I...
(beat)
I might need it.
SETH
No, I meant, I don't mind.
EILEEN
Thanks.
She grabs the famous sheet of paper with Seth's name and
Max's name in it and puts it on the desk.
SETH
Do I...write it down?
EILEEN
Please. Write it twice, one in the
corner of the paper. Max might also
need it.
MAX
...okay.
SETH
Okay.
Seth writes the numbers down.
EILEEN
We still don't know how Faye died
in the dream...we just know it's
going to happen soon.
Faye swallows, unnerved.
Seth gives the paper back to Eileen, who tears the corner and
gives the paper to Max, who puts it in his pocket.
SETH
And that it's going to happen in my
uncle's house.
FAYE
Roy's? The one up by my house?
SETH
Right.
FAYE
What were we doing there?
Seth shrugs.
EILEEN
It's not going to happen today.
By now, it probably won't happen.
MAX
How can you tell?
EILEEN
I can't.
Faye grabs Seth's arm.
SETH
(to Faye)
Are you okay?
Faye shakes her head.
EILEEN
I need to be alone...I'll drop you
guys at home.
SETH
What do we do?
EILEEN
If you can, stay together and don't
go out until I call you. You'll be
fine.
MAX
What are you going to do?
EILEEN
I'm going to make a few calls...
She holds her breath for a moment.
EILEEN (cont'd)
Find out things about myself.
FAYE
Are you...sure it's going to be
okay?
Eileen nods and walks towards the door. She opens it.
EILEEN
Come on.
They walk out. Sylvia is standing on the other side of the
door, smoking a cigarette.
EILEEN (cont'd)
(to Sylvia)
I'm sorry. I'll be right back.
Sylvia nods and huffs the cigarette's smoke.
They walk towards the main door and go outside.
FADE TO:
EXT. APARTMENT COMPLEX - DAY
All four walk out of the building and follow Eileen to a
corner where her car is parked. Eileen unlocks it and takes
the driver's seat. Max sits next to Eileen on the front seat.
Seth opens the door for Faye and she sits on the back seat,
behind Max. Finally, Seth takes seat behind Eileen.
EILEEN
Where do you want to go?
SETH
We're supposed to be at school...
can't go to my house.
FAYE
Me neither.
Eileen gives ignition.
EILEEN
So?
MAX
My house is empty, my sister works
during the day.
SETH
Okay, thanks.
Max nods and puts his seat belt on. Eileen doesn't.
She drives off.
MAX
Go to the mall, I live near there.
EILEEN
Okay.
She takes a right.
MAX
Anya?
EILEEN
It's Eileen.
MAX
Sorry.
(beat)
I have a question.
EILEEN
What is it?
MAX
You said that, you can change how
the future goes?
EILEEN
If you know that it's going to
happen before, yes.
MAX
So, if I sent something to the past
right now and it changed, what
would happen here? It begins
shifting or what?
Eileen takes a deep breath.
EILEEN
No, it's different.
Max stares at her, waiting for her answer.
EILEEN (cont'd)
When you create a new future, the
original one doesn't disappear,
it's still there.
SETH
Wait, what?
EILEEN
Your new and improved future
branches off.
MAX
Oh.
EILEEN
Yeah. Have you ever been suddenly
depressed? Or suddenly happy? Like
out of nowhere?
MAX
I don't think so.
They cross a street.
FAYE
I know what you're talking about.
EILEEN
Yes. That's because in...okay, I'll
put it bluntly. In this alternate
reality, your other you was sad, or
happy.
(beat)
Some of these emotions bleed
through.
SETH
How do you know this stuff?
Eileen scoffs a laugh.
EILEEN
I've talked to a lot of people...
I've lived doing this.
Seth nods and stays quiet.
Eileen fixes her stare to the road. She stays quiet. Seth and
Faye talk silently in the back seat. They peck a kiss. Eileen
is quiet, looking at the road. He crosses an intersection.
MAX
It's three blocks down.
Eileen doesn't answer. Her eyes move lightly, back and forth,
back and forth.
Suddenly, a FLASH. She's bombarded with the image of herself
speaking with her father inside her apartment just before.
Then an image of herself laying on her bed, crying her eyes
off.
Back inside the car, she gasps loudly in shock. She skips a
stop and wildly crosses an intersection.
MAX (cont'd)
WATCH OUT!!
Without a warning, a big SUV RAMS Eileen's car on the left
side. The car ricochets to one of the sides. The metal twists
and bends. Chips of glass fly off and hit the street.
Eileen's head is smashed against the glass and it cracks it.
Seth's neck bends like a dead chicken's.
Eileen's car slams against another car and stops. A few
screams and alarms blare around the accident site. Some
people run to get closer.
FADE TO:
INT. FORT MADISON GENERAL HOSPITAL - DAY
A stretcher rushes down a long, white hallway. Lights flash
on Max's bloody face as he is taken to the hospital's
emergency hall.
DOCTOR #2
He lost a little blood, 14 gauge,
rapid infuser. Send the type to the
bank and cross match.
He opens his eyes slowly and looks around at the doctors and
nurses that walk beside him.
NURSE
He's awake.
DOCTOR COOK (48) looks at him.
DOCTOR COOK
Max, how are you feeling?
MAX
(through his teeth)
What happened?
DOCTOR COOK
(to the Nurse)
He's lucid. Take him to B-103. I'll
be right there.
The doctor stops and turns back.
MAX
(through his teeth)
What happened?
NURSE
You had an accident. You have some
minor injuries but you'll be okay.
We have already called your family.
He tries to look sideward but fails.
MAX
(through his teeth)
Where's everyone else?
NURSE
Your friends are being taken care
of.
Max's eyes swell with tears.
NURSE (cont'd)
You'll be all right.
He is pushed inside a room.
CUT TO:
INT. FORT MADISON GENERAL HOSPITAL - ER - LATER
A wheelchair carrying Faye appears behind a corner and enters
the hospital's emergency room. She is wearing a medical
collar for neck injury.
Mina stands up and walks towards her worried.
MINA
Faye, oh my god, are you okay?
The male nurse that was pushing the wheelchair stops.
Faye's face has some minor cuts and bruises. She looks
virtually unharmed.
FAYE
Yes. Where's everyone else?
Mina stares at her.
FAYE (cont'd)
Mom?
She browses the room with her eyes. She spots Seth's parents,
Joan and ERIK (41) are hugging each other. Joan's face is
buried in Erik's chest. She is sobbing deeply.
FAYE (cont'd)
Mom, what happened?
Faye tries to stand up, but her legs hurt too much. She sits
back down.
Mina takes a deep, open mouthed breath and leans down in
front of Faye.
MINA
Faye, honey.
FAYE
Seth.
MINA
Seth...Seth died in the accident.
I'm really sorry, honey.
Faye's eyes quickly shift to see Seth's parents, who are now
staring at her.
FAYE
What?
MINA
I'm sorry.
She shakes her head, her voice cracks.
FAYE
What happened to him?
MINA
I don't know, honey.
Her head keeps shaking.
FAYE
No, please...he's fine, I
remember...he was all right before.
Mina stares at her.
MINA
Your other two friends...
FAYE
(irate)
I don't care about them! Just tell
me Seth is fine!
Mina is taken aback by Faye's comment and looks at her as she
breaks down to tears. She leans down and hugs her. Faye lets
go and sobs on her shoulder.
MINA
Faye.
FAYE
Shut up...
Mina takes a step back, startled.
FAYE (cont'd)
Sorry. I...
Max appears from behind a corner, sitting on a wheelchair,
pushed by a male nurse. The nurse talks to a woman in the
counter than pushes Max to where Faye is. Both stop when they
see Max, whose eyes are half closed.
Doctor Cook is talking to a nurse in the Emergency Room. He
walks towards Mina.
DOCTOR COOK
Good night, Mrs. Brown.
MINA
How's everything? What's on?
Faye looks at the doctor.
DOCTOR COOK
We're...having trouble locating any
relatives for the other girl that
was on the car and unfortunately we
have to give the bad news to
someone.
MAX
Eileen. Her name is Eileen.
What...what bad news?
DOCTOR COOK
I...I'm sorry, Max...but Eileen
died in the accident.
Max looks at the floor, then fixes his glare at his hand,
which is balled to a fist. Faye begins sobbing again.
DOCTOR COOK (cont'd)
I'm very sorry. But if any of you
have any information about her...
FAYE
She didn't have any friends at
school...I don't think.
MAX
I liked her. I really began liking
her. Her and you and Seth.
He looks up at Mina.
MAX (cont'd)
Seth? Where is he?
Mina shakes her head. Max hangs his head in sinking
realization.
FAYE
Her roommate.
MINA
Who?
FAYE
Eileen lived with a woman in a
small apartment...she knows who to
call.
DOCTOR COOK
I see. Can you give me her address?
FAYE
I don't...know it.
MAX
The complex in Craven Street...she
was 2-B.
Faye looks at him.
DOCTOR COOK
A phone number?
FAYE
It was in my cell phone's memory. I
don't think I can find...
MAX
555-45-11.
Everyone looks at him.
Doctor Cook writes the number down in a pad.
DOCTOR COOK
Thank you very much. Again, I'm
very sorry.
He walks away. Faye is staring at Max with liquid eyes.
CUT TO:
EXT. SAINT FRANCIS' CEMETERY - DAY
SUPERIMPOSE: "ONE WEEK LATER".
A group of people is sitting around a burial casket, there
are many flowers, a priest talks in front of everyone. Faye
is sitting in the front row, next to her mother. She is still
wearing the neck collar, small scars cover her face.
FATHER CONNELY
He was taken too soon, and he will
be missed.
Faye looks at the sky, it's crystal blue, beautiful.
MINA
(whispering)
What happened with the other girl?
FAYE
An...Eileen?
MINA
Yes.
FAYE
I don't know. I don't think she had
a proper funeral. She didn't know
anyone.
MINA
That's very sad. We should've
done...something for her...a small
funeral, anything.
Faye swallows.
FAYE
Yes...
She then looks at the other graves and spots Max, walking
towards Seth's funerary service with his sister, Sarah.
Faye buries her face on Mina's shoulder. Mina turns around
and notices Max.
MINA
There's Max.
Faye shakes her head.
MINA (cont'd)
What is it?
FAYE
I can't look at him. It's just a
big flashback.
Mina caresses Faye.
Max stands in the back, wearing big sunglasses.
SARAH
(whispering)
What time is it?
Max checks his watch.
MAX
Six forty-two. It's almost over.
She nods.
SARAH
Where's Faye?
Max browses the crowd.
MAX
There, up front.
Sarah nods.
The priest says his closing prayer. Everyone stands up in
respectful reverence, some begin walking away. Faye, Mina and
Seth's parents stay in front of the coffin as it begins
descending into the ground.
Max and Sarah walk towards the remaining grievers. He stops
next to Faye, who desperately tries to avoid any eye contact
with Max.
MAX (cont'd)
Hey.
Faye doesn't answer.
MAX (cont'd)
How are you doing?
Faye swings a pair of sunglasses on.
FAYE
Not too well...
MAX
I'm sorry.
She nods.
FAYE
I know.
MAX
Listen, I...I know I didn't know
you too well...but...
FAYE
What?
MAX
I'd just like to...keep in touch
with you.
She swallows.
FAYE
I'm sorry, I don't think I can. Not
for a while.
Max freezes, tries to speak but can't.
MAX
I...I understand.
FAYE
I'm sorry, Max.
She starts away from Max, who stares at her with a glare that
screams humiliation and rejection. Sarah looks at him.
SARAH
God, I'm so sorry.
Max sighs.
SARAH (cont'd)
It was a real tragedy.
He shakes his head.
MAX
I wish it hadn't turned out like
this.
SARAH
I think we should go.
MAX
(nods)
All right.
They begin walking away from the grave site and towards a
flower-decorated pathway.
Faye stares at both of them as tears begin swelling up in her
eyes again. She slips on a pair of sunglasses and turns back
to see her boyfriend's grave.
CUT TO:
INT. MAX'S HOUSE - ATTIC - NIGHT
Max is sleeping, tucked inside thick sheets on his bed. Sarah
is sitting on a chair, looking at her brother as he sleeps
peacefully. This Max doesn't have any scratches nor bruises
on his face.
He begins rolling and moving in his sleep.
Suddenly, there are quick flashes of the car crash. The SUV
ramming their car, Eileen's head hitting the glass, Seth's
neck snapping.
Max opens his eyes abruptly, Sarah gasps.
SARAH
Jesus Christ!
Max looks at her, panting.
MAX
What...are you doing here?
SARAH
Came by for a moment. Are you okay?
You had a nightmare.
He nods.
MAX
Yeah, I think.
SARAH
What did you dream?
Max stays quiet.
MAX
I...I don't remember.
SARAH
Huh. Then, well...
She stands up and walks towards the attic's door.
SARAH (cont'd)
It couldn't have been that bad
right?
Max smiles and slides back inside the sheets.
CUT TO:
EXT. APARTMENT COMPLEX - DAY
Seth, Faye, Eileen and Max walk out of the building and
follow Eileen to a corner where her car is parked. Just like
before.
Eileen unlocks it and takes the driver's seat. Max sits next
to Eileen on the front seat. Seth opens the door for Faye and
she sits on the back seat, behind Max. Finally, Seth takes
seat behind Eileen.
EILEEN
Where do you want to go?
SETH
We're supposed to be at school...
can't go to my house.
FAYE
Me neither.
Eileen gives ignition.
EILEEN
So?
MAX
My house is empty, my sister works
during the day.
SETH
Okay, thanks.
Max nods and puts his seat belt on. Eileen doesn't.
She drives off.
MAX
Go to the mall, I live near there.
EILEEN
Okay.
She takes a right.
MAX
Anya?
EILEEN
It's Eileen.
MAX
Sorry.
(beat)
I have a question.
EILEEN
What is it?
MAX
You said that...
He stops talking.
EILEEN
Max?
MAX
I...there's...I had seen this
before.
They cross an intersection. They're getting close to the
accident site.
EILEEN
What?
MAX
I've seen this before...
Seth stares at Eileen, scared. Max widens his eyes.
MAX (cont'd)
Stop the car. Anya, stop.
Eileen's eyes shift from the rearview mirror to see Max and
the road, then back to Max. Scared, she turns over and stops
the car next to the curb.
EILEEN
What happened??
MAX
I don't remember, I just...
SETH
Yeah we better stop. Whatever it
is, it can't be good.
Eileen stares at Max for a moment. Suddenly, like before, she
is shaken by the sudden vision of herself crying in the
corner of her room. She shakes her head.
EILEEN
Oh my god.
A red SUV crosses the intersection ahead at high speed.
SETH
What happened?
Eileen stays quiet, thinking. She cups her hand over her eyes
and closes them, she then takes a deep breath and shakes her
head, "nothing.".
FAYE
Let's go.
Seth and Faye looks at Max, who shakes his head.
Eileen starts the car and drives off. She crosses the
intersection and turns in a corner.
Inside the car, Max is looking outside the window with wide
expressionless eyes, thinking back at the strange feeling he
got before. Seth nabs Faye's hand, which he caresses with his
thumb.
Max turns towards Eileen.
MAX
Almost there, first house in the
corner after the mall.
Eileen nods.
EILEEN
Seth.
Snaps back to Eileen.
SETH
Yeah?
EILEEN
By now I am pretty sure Faye is
safe.
SETH
What?
EILEEN
I mean it. You have my number but
I'd appreciate it if you didn't
call me for a while. I'm going to
leave the town, too.
Seth swallows.
SETH
Okay...all right.
FAYE
Where are you going?
EILEEN
Back with...my parents.
She nods.
MAX
(to Eileen)
It would be nice to have a coffee
or something sometime.
She forces a smile.
EILEEN
Yeah, that would be nice.
(she looks through the
window)
Here?
MAX
Yes.
She stops and unlocks the doors. Faye opens her door.
FAYE
Thanks.
SETH
Yeah, thanks for everything.
She nods as both walk out. Max stays inside the car for a
moment. His face expresses nervousness.
MAX
Eileen.
EILEEN
Yeah.
MAX
It might be stupid or
something...specially after what
you just said to Seth but...
EILEEN
What is it?
MAX
Do you think we could go get a cup
of coffee?
She stops, bemused.
EILEEN
What, now?
MAX
Oh no, not now. I know you want to
be alone. I mean...sometime, in a
week or something.
She smiles. Max's eyes shift to her tiny, very sexy mouth.
EILEEN
Sure.
MAX
Really?
EILEEN
Yeah, why not. I'd like to talk to
you. You gave me your number. Wait
for my call.
Max shows a truly (maybe his first) honest smile.
MAX
I will.
He opens the door and walks out.
EILEEN
Bye, Max.
MAX
Bye.
He closes the door, Eileen drives off smiling, looking at the
three through the rearview mirror.
FAYE
Poor Anya.
MAX
Eileen.
SETH
Why?
FAYE
I don't know. She's
very...disturbed.
SETH
Yeah.
FAYE
She scared me.
MAX
She saved your life!
Faye looks at Max and shakes her head, almost laughing.
FAYE
I don't think so.
Both look at Seth, who doesn't say anything. He just takes
Faye's hand and wraps his arm around her shoulder.
MAX
(silently, to himself)
She did.
They begin walking away.
CUT TO:
INT. MAX'S HOUSE - TELEVISION ROOM - NIGHT
SUPERIMPOSE: "ONE WEEK LATER".
Sarah is sitting on the couch staring at the TV. Her eyes are
almost closed. She hears a loud thud inside a room upstairs
and opens them wide.
SARAH
Max? What fell?
She walks up the stairs. The door of her mother's room is
open, the lights are turned on.
MAX
Yes?
She stops at the door frame and looks at Max, who is sitting
on the bed looking at a photo album. She smiles.
SARAH
What are you doing here?
MAX
I was looking at some pictures.
(beat)
This room smells like mom.
She nods.
SARAH
Yeah, it does.
(beat)
I heard the phone ring, who was it?
MAX
A friend. Eileen.
SARAH
Who's she?
MAX
She called me. She wants to go
drink a cup of coffee tomorrow?
Sarah smiles even wider.
SARAH
Really? That's fantastic!
MAX
Yes, I know. I'm very excited.
SARAH
I'm glad you made a friend. Can I
meet her? Some day?
MAX
I wanted to talk about her, with
you.
SARAH
What is it? Tell me.
He stays quiet for a moment, smiling, breathing quickly. His
hands shake in excitement.
MAX
I think I like her.
She snorts a laugh.
SARAH
I think I like her too.
MAX
No, see. I think I like her.
Sarah stays quiet, then, her eyes widen.
SARAH
Oh! OH!
MAX
And I'm very confused. I...remember
a year ago when I thought I liked
Desmond? This is very different. I
had never felt this way about
someone.
SARAH
I don't understand.
MAX
Neither do I. I met her a week ago.
I haven't stopped thinking about
her. She came and talked to me. And
god she's beautiful.
SARAH
Maybe you really like her. Go with
her tomorrow, see how you feel.
(beat)
Maybe it's girls you're attracted
to.
He sighs.
MAX
I don't know. It's very strange.
Maybe it is.
CUT TO:
INT. SETH'S HOUSE - TELEVISION ROOM - NIGHT
Faye and Seth are laying on a couch, watching a sitcom. Seth
laughs, Faye stays quiet. He looks at her. A wall clock
behind tells that the time is "10:32 PM"
SETH
(to Faye)
Oh come on that was hilarious.
FAYE
Yeah.
Seth frowns and turns the TV off with the remote. Faye looks
at him.
SETH
What is it?
She looks sad.
FAYE
Nothing, I don't know I'm not
feeling too well.
SETH
Are you okay?
FAYE
Yes, I'm okay. I just want to take
a shower.
SETH
Faye, what is it?
FAYE
No, it's nothing. You know what,
just let me take the shower and
we'll watch TV.
SETH
Why don't you take it here?
She shakes her head.
FAYE
Please.
SETH
Okay. Fine.
FAYE
Thanks.
Both stand up. Seth grabs a jacket and gives it to Faye, who
accepts it. He grabs a set of keys from a small ashtray.
SETH
(yelling)
Mom! I'm taking Faye home!
JOAN (O.S.)
Okay!
She tucks her hair behind her right ear and follows Seth
outside.
CUT TO:
INT. FAYE'S HOUSE - FAYE'S ROOM - NIGHT
Faye enters her room. This Faye is wearing the medical neck
collar and has bruises and cuts on her face. She's crying.
Mina enters the room behind her. Both are dressed in black,
just back from the funeral.
Mina checks her watch.
MINA
It's eleven. You're going to sleep?
She takes a deep breath.
FAYE
I don't...I don't know if I can.
MINA
You can. It will help.
Faye brushes her hand through her hair and goes sit on her
bed. Mina follows.
FAYE
I'm going to sleep.
Mina sits down on a chair next to the bed.
FAYE (cont'd)
What are you doing?
Mina looks at her.
MINA
I don't want you to be alone right
now.
FAYE
Why?
MINA
You know why.
FAYE
What the hell is that supposed to
mean? You think I'll do it again?
Mina shakes her head.
MINA
I didn't say that.
FAYE
Just go, please.
Mina stares at her.
FAYE (cont'd)
I won't do anything, just go!
Mina turns around, nods, and walks outside.
FAYE (cont'd)
Close the door.
Mina shuts the door. Faye stays sitting on her bed. She looks
to the side at a small wooden cupboard. She reaches for it
and slides one of the drawers open. There are many things
randomly thrown inside: A dead red rose, a few letters,
pictures of her and Seth and a big album. She takes the album
and looks at its cover. It says "It's Been One Year..."
She sniffles and runs her hand under her nose. A tear swells
on her eye. She opens it and begins looking at pictures of
her and Seth. Her flipping through the pages reveal how many
pictures there are.
She begins crying more intensely and swallows thick saliva.
Faye grabs a box of Kleenex and uses one to blow her nose.
FAYE (cont'd)
(crying intensely)
God...
At the same time, in another reality, Faye is sitting on her
bed, all alone. This is the Faye that isn't wearing the
collar, the Faye without scars. She is crying just as
intensely as her doppelganger. She is holding a big butcher's
knife with her right hand, her bare left wrist laying on her
leg.
Her breathing begins quickening. She looks through a window
at the street. Seth's mom's car is parked right outside her
house. Seth is inside, listening to quiet music from the
radio.
Seth looks up at Faye's window, but doesn't see Faye. He
leans back on the seat of the car and closes his eyes. Then,
total darkness. He falls asleep.
Suddenly, in the darkness, a bloodcurdling SCREAM scrapes
through Seth's ears and wakes him up. He looks at Faye's
house, than at the car's clock, it's almost twelve.
SETH
Oh shit.
The scream continues. Seth opens the door of the car and runs
inside.
CUT TO:
INT. - COFFEE HOUSE - NIGHT
Eileen and Max are sitting together in the same coffee shop
Eileen went to with Max and Faye before.
EILEEN
Well, that boyfriend I told you
about was mine.
He smiles.
MAX
Anyone else?
EILEEN
Turns out I have a younger sister I
had forgotten about, too.
MAX
What's her name?
EILEEN
Dawn, she's eight.
MAX
Is she nice?
EILEEN
She's gorgeous, amazing. I loved
her. I'm moving back with my family
in a week.
Max looks down.
MAX
Oh. So you're leaving.
EILEEN
Yes, this last week with my family
was great. I'm going to stay away
all of this. Rebuild, you know?
Max nods.
EILEEN (cont'd)
Are you all right?
MAX
Yeah, yeah. I just...I was starting
to like you.
EILEEN
Oh, Max.
She moves closer to Max and puts her hand on his cheek. Max's
nerves seem like they're about to explode.
EILEEN (cont'd)
I like you too, Max.
He turns to see her and without a warning, pecks her lips.
Eileen jumps back in surprise.
MAX
Sorry, sorry.
Eileen laughs.
EILEEN
What was that all about?
MAX
I'm sorry.
EILEEN
No it's okay...but I thought you
were...
MAX
I thought I was too.
Eileen looks at Max and approaches him again. He looks at
her, scared. Eileen licks her lips and grabs his head again.
Slowly, he puts her lips on his and begins kissing him. Max
closes his eyes. After a moment, she stops and sits back.
EILEEN
But man, aren't you the good
kisser!
MAX
That was...my first.
EILEEN
Really?
He nods.
EILEEN (cont'd)
I'm impressed.
MAX
Why did you kiss me?
EILEEN
(smiling)
I wanted to.
MAX
Can you do it again?
EILEEN
I'm still leaving, you know?
He nods. Eileen smiles and approaches him again for yet
another kiss Max seems very excited about. But before they
can kiss, Eileen's cell phone rings. Eileen stops.
EILEEN (cont'd)
Well, shit.
Max looks at the phone as Eileen picks it up.
EILEEN (cont'd)
(to the phone)
Yeah.
Silence, a shocked face quickly takes over.
EILEEN (cont'd)
(to the phone)
WHAT?!
MAX
What is it?
EILEEN
(to the phone)
What happened? Where are you?
Silence.
EILEEN (cont'd)
(to the phone)
Oh god. I'll be right there.
She hangs up.
MAX
What happened?
EILEEN
It's Faye, I need to go to the
hospital.
MAX
Can I come?
EILEEN
Yes, let's go.
Both pick up their things and run outside.
CUT TO:
INT. FORT MADISON GENERAL HOSPITAL - LATER
Max and Eileen run through a hallway. They see Seth sitting
outside a room, his head hanging.
EILEEN
Oh no.
They reach him. Max looks through the door and sees Faye's
mom crying her eyes out as a doctor speaks to him. Seth looks
at Eileen. He isn't crying but he's on the verge.
EILEEN (cont'd)
What happened?
SETH
She...she just died.
MAX
I'm so sorry.
SETH
Her mom found her, she was bleeding
out. She cut her wrists, just like
before.
EILEEN
She had done this before?
SETH
Yeah...a year ago...they found her
sooner. Last time.
EILEEN
I can't tell you how sorry I am.
SETH
I thought you said she'd be safe.
Why?
Eileen stays quiet, same for Max.
EILEEN
She was supposed to be.
Seth balls his hands into a fist.
SETH
I guess...I guess you can't change
the future.
Eileen squats in front of him and looks him directly to the
eyes.
EILEEN
No, you can change the future.
(beat)
You just can't change people.
Seth wipes his eyes with his finger and hangs his head.
Eileen looks at Mina, who looks right back at him.
EILEEN (cont'd)
I'm very sorry Mrs. Brown.
She only stares at her through eyes that are drowning in
tears.
EILEEN (cont'd)
(to Seth)
Do you want me to stay?
Seth doesn't answer.
Eileen nods and starts away from him.
MAX
Sorry.
He follows Eileen down the hallway. She glances back one last
time. Both Seth and Mina are staring at them as they walk
away.
FADE TO:
EXT. FORT MADISON HIGH SCHOOL - COURTYARD - DAY
SUPERIMPOSE: "ONE YEAR LATER".
Max is sitting on the same bench he met Eileen. He is sitting
with CLAIRE (18), a beautiful brunette with green eyes. They
are holding hands.
Seth appears from behind the corner of a building. He's
holding hands with JILL (19), his new girlfriend. She's
blonde, tall.
Their eyes meet. Seth does a V with his fingers, Max only
waves.
CLAIRE
Who's that?
MAX
A friend.
Max kisses Claire, Seth and Jill enter the building. That's
when everything ends.
FADE OUT.
