CELLULAR DEFECTION

An original short screenplay by Larry




"This script has no slugs. But I don't give a f***."

FADE IN:

It's a desolate, yet a very wide, spacious and seemingly endless road. 
A JEEP carrying THREE PEOPLE speeds through it. A man who's on the 
wheel, and 2 WOMEN; one is on the passenger seat. The other one is 
seated at the back. They're all about late 20's. The man is built... 
well, not too much, HE HAS A JAWLINE THAT'S VISIBLE AS HE CLENCHES HIS 
MOUTH, black hair, wearing soiled clothes. Dirty clothes. All of them, 
in afct are wearing those kinds of clothing.

The man is NATHAN. The woman beside him is ANDREA, dark brown hair, 
fair skin and pretty enough. The woman at the back is MARLEE. She's 
prettier than Andrea, and has beautiful eyes and has a gaze that's cold 
and tranquil.. Yet its easy to tell that  there's a certain degree of 
grimness within Marlee.

ROLL CREDITS.


ON BLACK: 2100 A.D.

FADE BACK IN:

Still, the three of them on the jeep. The world around them is broken. 
It is decayed and scoreched. They are moving really fast towards a 
direction, but a sharp eye can make out corpses and dead bodies. These 
aren't too many. But they're everywhere, it's night. There's only the 
moon that illuminates the darkness. The buildings are few, and 
everything is practically "few" on 2200.

FLASHBACK:

IT'S INSIDE AN OFFICE BUILDING. Marlee's in her cubicle, seated hands 
on the keyboard. A FOUR YEAR OLD GIRL, Marlee's daughter, 
VICTORIA/VICKY sits ona  chair right beside her.

VICKY
Marlee, can I go to the lobby... and play.

Ooooh, she calls her mom by her first name. That's cute.

CUT TO:

IT'S THE LOBBY OUTSIDE OF THE OFFICE BUILDING. The foyer has doors made 
outta glass, and outside can be made out, the city. Its NOT as broken 
as it was... just awhile ago. But this is EARLIER. Something musta 
fucked things up along the way -------

BUT A TALL, SLENDER ROBOT withs long arms starts beating the shit out 
of men and women who stand, or just walk near the lobby. At one point, 
it grabs a man in the crown, lifts him and hurls him towards a window 
display stall! (the display is PC's, TV sets, and a couple of 
CELLPHONES, and for some reason, CELLPHONES MOUNTED ON AIR 
CONDITIONERS!!!!!)

VICKY, bewildiered stands in the middle of all this. Then someone 
BARGES INTO THE AREA, CAARRYING A SUBMACHINE GUN, FIRING AT THE ROBOT 
THAT HAS GUN BERSERK!
- THIS MAN IS PYRAX OSTERLIND, 55 AND BALDING. He starts shooting 
things all over the place!

THEN - another man, an employee sprints towards the lobby from the 
hallway just to the right of the bullets coming out of Osterlind's 
rifle and to the right of the malfunctioning robot.

That man's name is JAY-STAN by the way. 

Jay-Stan pulls out a cellphone, AND FOR SOME REASON TRAINS IT TOWARDS 
THE ROBOT. HE PUNCHES SOME DIDITTS, AND SUDDENLY, THE ROBOT FALLS FLAT 
ON THE FLOOR, AND SOME OF ITS PARTS DISMANTLE OFF IT AND CLATTER TO THE 
GROUND.

BODIES, are all over the floor. Are they dead?

A MAN, clutches his hips in agony and looks like he was hit 
accidentally by the submachine gun!

AND VICKY!!!!!!!!!!!! OH NO! --- SHEY'S LYING ON THE GROUND. VICKY, THE 
LITTLE GIRL ------ AWW, MAN! HER HEAD'S BEEN CAPPED OBVIOUSLY BY THE 
FUCKING SUBMACHINE GUN! BLOOD'S GUSHING OUT OF IT.

Marlee arrives.

MARLEE
(starts to cry)
Vicky? --- V-----

Marlee gets on her knees and edges real close to VICKY.

Osterlind is one on one with the man who stopped the robot with the 
cellphone. This man is Jay-Stan by the way.

JAY-STAN
Why would a JANITORIAL UNIT suddenly go apeshit like that?

OSTERLIND
You never told me the codes for the janitorial units!



JAY-STAN
Yeah... yeah. I... only gave you the CARPENTRY and ENFORCER unit codes. 
But its not...

TIGHT ON MARLEE, who is crying heavily on her daughter's dead body.

JAY-STAN (CONT'D)
... not very proactive of you to always make me eat the dirt everytime, 
sir.

Marlee gets up. Jay-Stan and Osterlind are talking as if nothing's 
happened! The whole place is fucked!

Marlee, more stricken than ever taps Osterlind's shoulder and breaks 
his conversation with Jay-Stan. Marlee is very angry. Tears are all 
over her face.

MARLEE
You---

END FLASHBACK.

Back to them at the jeep.

Marlee, at the back seems unsettled. It looks like this memory haunts 
her endlessly. Her face tightens up. 

...

As the jeep continues to run, it RATTLES momentarily. They musta hit a 
bump or something. NATHAN TURNS AROUND TO LOOK AT MARLEE - whose being 
restless and uptight is evident.

NATHAN
You okay, Marlee?

Marlee just nods her head, "Yes".

FLASHBACK:

Marlee and Vicky are seated on a park.

In broad daylight. Its probably just a few hours before noon. An OLD 
MAN pushing a baby carriage passes by them, greets them.

OLD MAN
Hello.

Marlee responds with a smile.

OLD MAN,
So, I guess things are getting better for you two, eh?

MARLEE
This park is good medicine!

The old man just raises a brow, smirks and walks along.

Marlee turns back to Vicky, who seems rather upset, maybe even 
nostalgic... mother and daughter, were these the good old days for 
them?

END FLASHBACK FOR AWHILE --- BUT COMBINE MARLEE'S VOICE -
With the three of them still driving the jeep through an apocalyptic 
hell of an environment.


MARLEE
(VO)
Honey, I'm sure somehow we'll be seeing Dad again... but not in THIS 
life.

Beat.

MARLEE
(V0)
Its just that, ... his time was up. We always run out of time.

Beat.

MARLEE
(VO)
Look, I haven't really gotten over it myself, but I'm sure its 
important to not let it get to the both of us. . . . . . . . . 
Our time will come sooner or later. . . . . . . . and that's gonna be a 
time of pain too... w------ when it comes. But after that?
We might be happier. Maybe just as happy as Dad is ... where HE IS NOW.

INSERT: Marlee and Vicky in the park again. Marlee kisses her daughter 
on the forehead.

BACK TO MARLEE on the jeep ----- she takes a breath.

MARLEE
Pull over!

Amazingly, Nathan complies unesitatingly; the jeep stops. 

Beat.

Nathan and Andrea have their heads turned to Marlee.

ANDREA
Marlee, what's going on?

A long moment of silence goes by. They all just stare at each other for 
the longest time.

WIPE TO:

They're parked in front of a tall building. At the very top of the 
building reads PYRAX ELECTRONICS, ROBOTICS AND SOFTWARE INC. They all 
get off the jeep.

In NATHAN'S HAND is a PISTOL. He pulls the slide backwards and cocks 
the weapon. And on the DASH OF THEIR VEHICLE rests a RIFLE! Marlee 
makes a move to grab it.

NATHAN 
(to Marlee)
No. We won't be needing that. Just get your cellphones ready.

ANDREA
Nathan, enforcers and sentry bth sahre "EIGHTY NINE ONE SIX" right?

NATHAN
Yeah. Let's just hope the janitorials are all alseep.

ANDREA
I've always wondered why Osterlind has always taken refuge in his 
office. Do you think he has plans to take a "FUGIT?"

They walk into the building foyer. Like all places, its deserted. 
Marlee and Nathan and Andrea are all side by side.

Nathan looks fearless; or is he trying to cover up? Anyway, Nathan 
wields the pistol in isosceles stance, very blatantly; his eyes are as 
wide as saucers. Oh, he IS scared, but somehow he's trying to hide it. 
They walk towards a shutdown, nonfunctional escalator.

NATHAN
Andrea. You were saying?… The motherfucker must have a suite in here...

The way the entire INTERIOR of this building looks ----- has a 
foreboding atmosphere to it; otherwise this feel is just an 
interpreation of its lifelessness. Finaly, they're walking on the 
escalator, going up.

FLASHBACK:

Marlee sits on a bad, crying. Nathan stands in front of her and later 
sits as if to comfort her.

MARLEE
I am NOT... (sobs) going back to Pyrax... building. Ever I----

NATHAN
Sh! Sh!

Marlee continues to cry.

Beat.

NATHAN
(almost swearing)
You WON'T... but I WILL. I won't let this slide.

Marlee stops crying. She gets a confused look on her face.

MARLEE
What?

RIGHT INTO ANOTHER FLASHBACK:

Marlee's still in the same room. Obviously her bedroom, but this time, 
she's relaxed. And fresh--- she's wearing a bathrobe. Her hand on a 
pillow-case, hair exposed, still messed up. Must be a lazy day...

But Andrea! ------- Andrea paces back and forth ain front of the be, in 
office clothes. Very unsettled as she does so...

ANDREA
Look, the company can't explain it. But usually, there're daeths in 
almost every precinct now. The cops, none of them have a clue... Every 
fucking precinct, Marlee. The EU's. why just the EU's?

Marlee just stares blankly.

MARLEE
(sotto, to herself)
Doesn't matter. It was not an AU... It was a J.U. that costed me Vicky.

END FLASHBACK.

They've reached the top end of the escalator. But out fo the darkness, 
three robots emerge. Two more! They pretty much look the same as the 
robot that killed Vicky. 

Anyway, the THREE OF THEM wield rifles! The rifles fire in the 
direction of where Nathan, Andrea and Marlee stand.
NATHAN FIRES AND AIMS AT THE "HAND" OF ONE OF THE TREACHEROUS ROBOTS, 
THAT ROBOT LOSES ITS RIFLE!

ANDREA IS NOW HOLDING A CELLPHONE. SHE PUNCHES DIGITS, ALL OF A SUDDEN 
THE THREE ROBOTS COLLAPSE! BODY PARTS AND MECHANICAL APPENDAGES ON 
THEIR "FRAMES" CLATTER AS THEY HIT CONCRETE FLOOR.

The three of our heroines are getting down. They're almost crouching. 

They get up.

FLASHBACK:

It's a sunny day. And isnide OSTERLIND'S OFFICE. 

MELKONIS, one of Osterlind's proteges stands alongside Jay-Stan. All 
three of them have an intimate conversation.

OSTERLIND
What, Melkonis? The stearate acids located athe throat of their necks 
casue them to react that way?

MELKONIS
Yes sir, we're thankful this incident didn't occur in a populated area. 
Sir, we should tip off, the eighty ninehundred sixteen... the ENFORCERS 
are usually the perps, sir. Your inventions are going hay-wire, Mr. 
Osterlind...

OSTERLIND
No, Don't' give away the codes for the Enforcer units just yet...

JAY-STAN
But sir----

OSTERLIND
No! I don't want my robotic units shut down. Our employers know 
enough... let's not tip these codes further over just yet, OKAY?

Both Jay-Stan and Melkonis can only nod in approval of their boss.

OSTERLIND
Leave me for a minutes alone, will you guys?

Both of them leave the room.

INTERCUT FLASHBACK WITH:

Nathan, Marlee and Andrea walking up a wide flight of stairs in the 
deserted Pyrax building. They continue up and onward...

·	Meanwhile, its back to Osterlind in the flashback:

He sits on his tall chair in front of his office desk. He pulls open a 
drawer, and pulls out a HADNGUN!!! Osterlind rests the gun barrel below 
his chin, he's pulling the trigger, shutting his eyes in anticipation 
of his suicidal expiration ------ but NO! He does trigger-finger out. 
Replaces the gun back to the drawer and pushes it back.

Beat.

Osterlind, this old sonof a bitch starts breathing heavily. Who would 
have known that such a powerful company owner is contemplating suicide? 
No one maybe...

But Pyrax Osterlind --- is just another cliché of the lonely and 
depressed.

FADE OUT.

CU OF A TV MONITOR; OR A MONITOR OF SOME SORT:

A FEMALE NEWSCASTER speaks in front of the camera. Behind her is a 
spaceport...

IT'S HUGE! And reminiscent of age old train stations.

Only, its not a tarin station A apaceship with a LONG FUSELAGE AND 
SHARP NOSE sits just a few meters away from this reporter. Oh my...

REPORTER
In every batch, tickets get sold out for the space buses...
People, you must take adfvantage of the TEMPUS FUGIT technology.

Beat.

REPORTER
The Pyrax Crisis ahs gone out of hand! Even the robotic units sold 
overseas have started to manlfunction. The company assumes little 
responsibility in this situation. GORDONAE... can now be resided on 
people! The terraforming is 80 per cent completed.

Beat.

REPORTER
You, wherever youa re... must save yourself. Go to a tempus fugit 
termnal. Live in Gordonae! The terminals are having difficulty 
suppresing the attacks of these malfunctioning robotic organisms from 
Pyrax Electronics. IN two weeks, we willa ll close down and be in 
Gordonae colony. You are warned... 

Beat.

REPORTER
THIS... is your last call.

ZOOM OUT a little bit to reveal that it is NOT a tv monitor. It is a 
HOLOGRAPHIC SCREEN generated by a "lipstick" kind of projector that's 
on a cellphone that Osterlind holds in his hand! Osterlind pushes a 
button... The hoogram vanishes.

Jay-Stan and Melkonis sit ona  low bookshelf, but it's as wide as a 
bench. Their boss, sits on his TALL CUSHION CHAIR, leaning on it just 
like Mr. Burns in The Simpsons.

CUT TO:

Nathan, Andrea and Marlee. They're walking really slow in a dark 
hallway. Nathan's holding the pistol in one hand, no longer making any 
"proper" stance. He's practically ready to shoot anything that comes at 
him point blank.

They're all walking towards a CLOSED DOORWAY. The door is just a 
single-door, but its black and with a GOLDEN KNOB. They're finally 
really close to it. Nathan makes a move to open the golden knob with 
his left hand.

NATHAN
(to Marlee, almost whispering)
We've all turned around just for this... we're risking our flight to 
the alst spacebus, are you sure you wanna do this?

INSIDE OSTERLIND'S OFFICE ---

Is a doorway that's tall, BLACK WOOD, GOLDEN KNOB --- WAIT A MINUTE! 
THAT WOULD MEAN, THAT THIS DOOR IS THE SAME--------

THE DOOR SHOOTS OPEN! The three of them, Nathan leading; bolt into the 
room. Nathan fires and shoots Jay-Stan in the forehead.

Nathan makes his move to shoot Melkonis. But Melkonis leaps forward and 
manages to kick Nathan's pistol out of his hand. But Osterlind 
amazingly remains seated in a steely calm disposition.
Melkonis and Nathan get into a very violent fight. At onee point, 
Melkonis kicks a GLASS, NATHAN CHOPS AT IT; THE GLASS SHATTERS ON THE 
FLOOR. They CONTINUE TO FIGHT, INTENSELY.

^ take note, that scene is not detailed in this screenplay, but if I 
can be on set to direct it, I have a LOT of ideas how it should look 
like ;) 

Marlee pick up Nathan's fallen handgun, she shoots Melkonis and the 
bullet hits MELKONIS IN THE BRIDGE OF HIS NOSE! It penetrates 
whatever's behind his head, Melknois staggers back; against a wall as 
he loses his life...

Marlee turns to Osterlind. She aims the pistol at Osterlind. Marlee 
hesitates to shoot her former boos ass he remains seated on his throne.

NATHAN
We came all the way back, Marlee. Waste the motherfucker!

Marlee FIRES! But she misses --- instead she hits the GLASS WINDOW 
behind Osterlind's seat... THE GLASS WINDOW BREAKS AND SHATTERS. WIND 
STARTS TO SUCK IN paper and other objects that lie on Osterlind's 
table. Osterlind gets up. He stares at Marlee for a long time. Marlee 
stars back with all her grimness and disdain. Osterlind, backs up, 
closes in on the edge of the window! OSTERLIND JUST GIVES IN THE THE 
WIND! HIS BODY FALLS OFF, AND INSTANTLY VANISHES FROM SIGHT.

WIPE TO:

All three of them rush out of the building. Nathan pulls out a 
cellphone, he punches digits. And ACTIVATES THEIR JEEP!

Osterlind's body lies just a few mtersa way from the veicle. He lies 
prone, his head has cracked.

They all hop into their vehicle. They speed up as they start to get 
moving. 

TIME CUT:

They're on a desolate road again, back to where they were just hours 
ago. Nathan drives hastily this time.

NATHAN
Let's hope we can catch up!

PHWANG!!!!!!!!! Some sort of a nuclear balst erupts! It caues a wave of 
pressure to spread out from a circle. IT KNOCKS THE JEEP SIDEWAYS. DUST 
IS EVERYWHERE. DUST AND SMOKE! WHAT THE FUCK JUST HAPPENED? MARLEE AND 
ANDREA, LIE ON SOIL AND THEY CAN HARDLY SEE A THING. 

EXCEPT NATHAN'S BODY, CRUSHED BY THE SIDES OF THE VEHICLE ON THE 
GROUND!

HE'S DEAD!

Marlee and Andrea get up. The smoke and dust start to dissipate. Abut 
Marlee and Adrea let out coughs of affliction from the dust that's 
everywhere.

MARLEE
Andrea, its not far from here! We can get to it!

Marlee and Andrea look at Nathan, their departed friend for one last 
time.

DISSOLVE:

Marlee and Andrea reach the SPACE STATION ---- The one being advertised 
earlier. They walk towards a SPACE BUS! A CONDUCTOR of sorts escors the 
passengers into the huge space bus.

Each passenger hands the conductor a kind of a ticket. Well, Marlee and 
Andrea pull out their wallets and produce their tickets.

CUT TO:

Inside the spacebus LOTS of people. Marlee and Andrea get settled down.
Now they're seated together.

ANDREA
You bring your cellphone?

MARLEE
God rid of it... for some reason I got rid of it as soon as I quit the 
job. Yours?

ANDREA
Never had one. None of those fuckers are in Gordonae, so we won't be 
needing a cellphone.

The space bus takes off. THROUGH SOMEONE'S POV OF ONE OF THE SPACE BUS 
WINDOWS: things below start to seemingly descend away. The city in 
ruins. Some glimpses of life. 

Glimpses of ROBOTIC LIFE as the robots walk the earth searching for 
prey.

AT THE COCKPIT,

The THREE PILOTS navigate through the skies. And finally, they reach 
out of space!

IN SPACE

The beautiful space bus flies out and way from earth's atmosphere. 
Suddenly, it SHOOTS AWAY, REAL FAST! JUMPING INTO LIGHTSPEED AND IT 
VANISHES INTO THE HEAVENS!

CUT TO:

The spaceship soars above a beautiful grayish planet.

The spacebus finalle ENTERS the atmosphere of GORDONAE, YES, THE 
GRAYISH PLANET and makes its descent.

GORDONAE---

This planet is snowing! Marlee looks through the window of the 
spacebus, she sees SMALL HOUSES! PEOPLE WALKING THROUGH UNDEVELOPED 
ROADS. BUT ON THOSE ROADS ARE CONSTRUCTION WORKERS STARTING TO PAVE IT 
STEP BY STEP, TAKING IT SLOWLY!

There are NO Pyrax robots here!

CUT TO:

The spacebus lands in a terminal. 

The terminal reflects that of the one on earth. IT SNOWS LESS HERE, BUT 
THE SPACE PORT GROUNDS ARE STILL DEFINITELY CAKED WITH THE ICE.

Everyone gets off the space bus. THEY ALL HEAD FOR THE INTERIOR OF THE 
TERMINAL... EVERYONE SEEMS RELIEVED, THEY'RE ALL IN THE LANDING FIELD 
HEADED FOR THE TERMINAL BUILDING.

BUT WAIT ----

From outta nowhere, INSIDE THE SPACEBUS FUSEALAGE, AN ENFORCER UNIT, 
CARRYING A LASER RIFLE SOMEHOW MANAGED TO TAKE A RIDE! IT'S INSIDE THE 
SPACEBUS... IT WALKS THROUGH THE FUSELAGE, EXISS AND STARTS SHOOTING 
THE PASSENGERS THAT WALK THE LANDING FIELD!

People are now losing their lives to laser fire from the treacherous 
stowaway robot.

Are the pilots safe, by the way?

AND NOOOOOOO! ANDREA GETS SHOT!

Marlee, without hesitation heads for a post and hides herself behind 
it.

But just at this spur of the moment, every one of the passengers, 
who've only set foot on the space bus landing ground are now 
exterminated! 

Not one survivor! Save for Marlee.

Marlee starts to sweat nervously while she hdies herself behind the 
post.

MARLEE
(sotto)
How the fuck did you take a ride?

With great pluck and also with some neurosis, Marlee emerges out of the 
post and exposes her self to the Enforcer Unit Robot. She pulls out the 
pistol that's tucked in between her pants, and hip...

She fires at the robot's weaponhand... It loses its rifle. She fires 
again, at the ROBOT'S NECK -------------

POV FROM THE GORDONAE SKY:

A SMALL SPOT WHERE THE TERMINAL SHOULD BE EXPLODES AND RELEASES A 
MUSHROOM CLOUD! A NUCLEAR REACTION; ALBEIT NOT TOO BIG SWEEPS ACROSS A 
KILMOETER OF LAND...

That explains it. That's what caused the huge blast that killed Nathan 
back on earth. Hitting a robot's neck.

But other than that, the rest of Gordonae is safe. Thanks to Marlee.

FADE OUT.

FADE IN ON FLASHBACK:

Its that park, broad daylight. On earth. Marlee and Vicky seated on 
grass.

MARLEE
We all run out of time...

CHOPPY TIME CUT --- still Marlee and Vicky on the park.

MARLEE
... but we might be happier!

END FLASHBACK.

GORDONAE: ------ The people in this winder wonderland, LOTS of them 
take it out of their houses and observe in bewilderment the scary 
mushroom cloud.

They're staring at terror in the eye; but they're all watching it from 
a safe place. A perfect place.

The new life of man kind. Gordonae colony.

SMASH TO BLACK:

THE END.
