INT. PRESTON WOODS HIGH SCHOOL - DAY
It's a crime scene at the school cafeteria. Cops are going in
and out. Students and Teachers are standing around it.
Coroners are wheeling a body out. Everybody's murmuring about
the incident.
It's only a matter of time before the media gets here. Then --
it'll become a full blown national attention. Which is
exactly the kind of thing the LAPD doesn't want.
In the heart of the scene, Laura is standing besides Barton.
He doesn't look too pleased with this. Coffee in hand, he
listens to Laura. From the look on his face, we see that he
clearly doesn't want to be here.
INSPECTOR BARTON
So, what do we have here?
LAURA
A homicide. Apparently the attacker
slashed the victim with a Razor
Blade. -- repeatedly.
Barton kneels down next to the razor blade. It's broken right
in half. He inspects the are around it.
INSPECTOR BARTON
But this blade is snapped right in
half. Did anybody walk through here
and accidentally stepped on it?
LAURA
No. Not to my knowledge. The area's
been closed off ever since this
morning when the janitors found
her.
He gets up and takes a sip of his coffee. He still doesn't
want to be here.
LAURA
Seems to me the Grim Reaper was
here.
INSPECTOR BARTON
Cut it out Hunter. This is serious.
We got a dead body, and you feel
like it's time to break out in
play.
LAURA
I know. I just got this impulse.
But it's gone now.
INSPECTOR BARTON
So if you know, then you must
surely know that this just became
your case. And make sure that
there's no more of those impulses
once the Grieving relatives get
here.
LAURA
What? Are you out of your damn
mind?
INSPECTOR BARTON
Entertain me.
LAURA
You sent for her Relatives? First
you don't want anybody to find out
about this, and now this?
INSPECTOR BARTON
Yes, yes....but We figure that they
have a right to see the corpse. And
besides, they've been instructed
not to say anything about this to
anyone until the case is solved.
LAURA
Well, still, you think they'll just
blow this off, per your request,
"oh, it's ok. I'll just pretend it
never happened and go visit her".
And besides --
She shifts her position. Barton follows her movement.
LAURA
-- Why should I get this stinking
case? This is for those rookies you
recruit every month. They should be
doing this, not me.
INSPECTOR BARTON
Are you afraid to end up second
next to a rookie?
LAURA
No. Of course not. I mean I would
crush every rookie you got, but --
INSPECTOR BARTON
Then you'll take this case.
Before she can object again, Barton interrupts her.
INSPECTOR BARTON
No more questions. My time here is
limited. If you will excuse me, my
cop show is on TV right now, and
I'm late for lunch with my wife.
Laura flaps her arms into the air, in an annoyed state. She
puffs air out of her mouth and turns to marking notes about
the murder scene.
INSPECTOR BARTON
(as he's leaving)
And take Dumann too. When he gets
here....(as he's at the door)
...if he ever gets here.
Dumann bursts onto the scene. He squeezes by Barton through
the door frame, nearly spilling his coffee.
DUMANN
S'cuse me, Cappy!
Barton hears this. He nearly spills his coffee.
INSPECTOR BARTON
CAPPY! (Muttering as he walks away)
He scans the area and fixes his jacket and collar. His hair
is combed backwards, which he also fixes up a bit. Looking in
his shoulder inner pocket, he produces a bottle of perfume
and sprays it on. Laura spots him looking at a female
officer, who is bent over, taking pictures. She starts
walking over.
LAURA
Oh....(half way there)...where the
hell have you been?
Dumann turns around. Laura stops dead in her tracks. She's
five feet away.
LAURA
And why do you have that weird look
all over your face? Is something
wrong? Have you done something I
should know about again?
Dumann leans against the stair railing. He shifts his look
over at the Female Officer. He puts his hand over his mouth
and checks his breath.
DUMANN
Oh you know....dating Can be so
cruel....but Then again....so
Awesome. It's a great thing I tell
you.
LAURA
What do you mean?
DUMANN
What do you think I mean? I went on
a date. You know, something you
know nothing about.
Corrects himself.
DUMANN
I mean, you being horribly
misinformed about what dating is.
LAURA
HEY.....I know a little bit about
it. It's not like I've never been
on one. Or are you saying
differently.
DUMANN
How many? And friend dates don't
count.
LAURA
More than one....less Than 10. But
that's not important right now.
DUMANN
What about girls. Were you ever
with any girls?
LAURA
Hello.....didn't you notice.
There's a (Points to the body) dead
Body here.
DUMANN
Oh.....yeah so what?
LAURA
So what? We gotta get this sealed
and dusted and stuff, and whatever
you're supposed to do and --
She realizes Dumann's previous comment.
LAURA
-- WHAT, girls? Are you insane?
What gives you that idea? What
makes you think I like girls?
She keeps going on and on. Dumann clearly doesn't even listen
to her.
DUMANN
Oh....yeah Yeah yeah.
INT. SAN FRANCISCO P.D. - OFFICES - DAY
Laura is sitting at her desk. Dumann on his. Laura is talking
about the murder. She leans backwards in her chair.
LAURA
So....the Killer slashes the victim
3 times on the chest and on both
wrists. Engraves a skull with an
arrow through it's forehead, on the
victim's chest. And I still don't
know what it means. Seems to be one
of those Sherlock Holmes Mysteries.
DUMANN
And there were no gunshots or
anything. The lady was also,
according to the report, beaten
severely, to the point where she
practically died before he slashed
her. So why slash her then?
LAURA
What the hell does that stupid
Skull mean? I have never seen it.
Don't even know what it is. Seems
to be one of those Nazi things.
Maybe it is.
Dumann suddenly gets an idea.
DUMANN
That's it. Darrell Warren.
LAURA
What? What are you talking about?
DUMANN
Darrell Warren. The Razor Killer.
They couldn't convict him on any
killings, so he served 7 for
robberies and other stuff. Got
parole 3 months ago. Right when
those killings started.
LAURA
Darrell Warren became the Razor
Killer because of the media. He's a
screw up, not a nut job. The guy
we're looking for is a psycho.
DUMANN
What about Andy McDowell?
LAURA
What about him?
DUMANN
He's had tons of killings like that
in the past. He got off mostly on a
technicality, and server 4 with
good behavior.
LAURA
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that whenever
he gets the desire to kill they
just remind him to be back by 10.
DUMANN
Ok, so we can rule out Maximum
Security Prisons. What else?
LAURA
Obviously. But that razor blade
bothers me the most?
DUMANN
Why?
LAURA
Why slash them with a Razor Blade?
And why leave the weapon on the
scene? Broken. You know....why Use
a razor blade when there's knifes
and retractable knifes. Or guns.
They could have just shot her.
DUMANN
I don't know. We should continue
this tomorrow. (He gets up) Want to
go to lunch?
LAURA
Ok.
INT. CITY SLUMS - SOMEWHERE - DAY
The slums are rat infested, decaying cities of the poor and
homeless. People are sleeping everywhere, some even on pools
of water and blood. Dead rats and homeless lie everywhere. On
the far west side, a gang has gotten together. They are on
some kind of metal catwalk-like plate, which holds a giant
gold Throne on it. A man sits in it.
The leader's face can't be seen. He's sitting on some sort of
throne. A man is kneeling in front of him -- surrounded by 20
or more thugs. The Throne Man seems very calm. His looks are
ordinary. Late 80s, grey hair, brown eyes, and a facial
complexion.
THRONE MAN
You did good, Whiton. Really good.
That should keep us from being
detected. Even if they did see you,
they cannot find you here.
Whiton is dressed in ragtag clothes. He's got long black hair
and baby blue eyes.
WHITON
Thank you sir. Your blessings will
never be forgotten. They allow me
to perform our duties worry free
day after day.
Whiton kisses the man's hand and walks back to the other
thugs. The man takes a burning stick and lights 2 candles on
both armrests. He does it calmly.
THRONE MAN
And as for the rest of
you.....remember. Nobody must know
of our faction. Should anybody find
out, the result could be the doom
of our very existence. In the 4000
years our faction has existed,
traitors and enemies noticed that
we are here.
The throne man gets up. He slowly steps down the 5 steps from
his throne. He puts his arms behind his back.
THRONE MAN
For thousands of years, we have
been the protectors of what's right
-- justice. As seen in the eyes of
god and presented to the very
people -- through Moses.
He starts to walk around the room and the Gang. They don't
look at him, but keep looking at the center of their circle.
THRONE MAN
Of course.....many have been trying
to cause our demise. But, to no
avail, all of them have failed --
(Beat) miserably. Through our
faction, we deliver the true
intention of Christ.
The Throne Man stops by a bright clear water fountain. He
gazes at it intently. Now his face is shown. Old, frail
looking, in is 80s, white hair.
THRONE MAN
And so in the name of the Lord and
his son.....
He takes a chalice. Raises it into the air.
THRONE MAN
.....our eternal protectors and
their disciples.....
He lowers the chalice slowly into the water, and scoops it
out.
THRONE MAN
.....to deliver the final pieces of
their work and finish it, as the
glorious......
Turning towards the gang, he takes 3 steps forward.
THRONE MAN
.....BIBLICAL RAIDERS OF THE GARDEN
OF EDEN.
The gang members all salute him with a hefty "Saras Dergar",
meaning "We understand Lord Savior". Everybody stomps twice
and raises their hands in the air.
EXT. SUNDANCE COFFEE SHOP - DAY
Laura and Dumann are sitting out on the patio. The street is
busy with traffic. It's a sunny day. People are sitting down
on the patio and order drinks. A waiter brings Laura and
Dumann their food and drinks.
DUMANN
So....what Do you think about Jenny
Hartman?
LAURA
What am I supposed to think about
her?
DUMANN
Do you think she's right for me?
LAURA
Well, I don't really know. You guys
share a few of the same interests.
But she'd make a good fun date for
you. But, when are you taking her
out?
DUMANN
Tomorrow.
LAURA
I don't know. I guess she'd be good
for you.
DUMANN
Would you?
Laura drops her Fork and Knife onto the table. The guests
turns their heads towards them.
LAURA
I don't understand why the hell you
always got to say shit like that?
Is it because you want to, or
because you want to see me
embarrass myself?
DUMANN
I just want to take you out on a
date.
LAURA
A date. Are you listening to your
self? A date.
Pretty soon it'll be two dates, and
then a proposal, then kids and
probable divorce.
DUMANN
What are you talking about?
LAURA
I am talking about what your idea
of a date is.
DUMANN
Oh so I have a bad idea of a date.
LAURA
No....you HAVE no idea of what a
date is. Why do you think Kat and
those other girls never called you?
DUMANN
Maybe they found somebody else.
LAURA
No....because On a date you just
don't pull out a gun, just to show
them, and wave it in front of
everybody and their face.
DUMANN
They were asking if I had one.
LAURA
You could have just as easily said,
it's not here, but I do have one.
DUMANN
Alright, Alright. You got me this
time. I don't want to talk about it
anymore.
LAURA
I mean, I would be freaked out
too.....
DUMANN
Alright!
LAURA
Ok. Just pay for this and let's go.
Dumann, gives her a look, and drops a 10$ onto the table. He
follows Laura into the car. Halfway to the car, Laura bumps
into -- The Throne Man. He excuses himself with a noble,
courteous bow and -- notices Laura's badge Number 775.
Laura notes the Skull and Arrow on his forearm. The Throne
man sees her looking at it. He covers it up quickly. He and
the other 2 guys move along.
THRONE MAN
(away from Laura and Dumann)
See what you can find out about
those two. I have a feeling they're
going to be trouble.
The thug next to him jots the numbers down. He replies:
THUG
Yes, our honor. I'll get right on
it.
The thug stops next to a homeless man. He slips him the paper
note. The Homeless Man slips it into the drainage shaft next
to him. A hand picks it up.
Laura saw the Thug give something to the man. She runs over.
LAURA
Good day Sir.
HOMELESS MAN
Good Day to you, Officer.
She notices the "officer". How would he know, if he didn't
even see her badge.
LAURA
I just need to know what that man
gave to you.
The homeless man pulls out a 20$. Laura nods and drops a 10$.
The homeless man thanks her.
Laura and Dumann walk back to the car.
INT. DUMANN'S CAR
LAURA
Let's drive out to that school
again.
DUMANN
Why. What have you got now.
LAURA
I saw that skull and arrow on that
man's forearm.
DUMANN
So. That doesn't mean anything.
LAURA
Yeah, but I'm pretty sure that I've
seen it somewhere in the school
too. And I don't think it's the
School's flag.
They drive off.
EXT. AROUND THE CORNER
The thug is watching them drive off. He takes a note from
somebody's hand and turns back towards the Throne Man. He
reads from the paper:
THUG 2
Their names are Laura Hunter and
James Dumann. Badge numbers 646 and
775....
The Throne Man stares at the paper. Still Calm, but seems to
be in a happy mood.
THUG 2
.....their address's are also on
here, and it says that they're on
their way to the Preston Woods High
School.
THRONE MAN
Very well. Tell Whiton that they
are coming.
The Thug writes something on a piece of paper and hands it to
the hand behind the corner. It disappears.
INT. PRESTON WOODS HIGH SCHOOL
Laura and Dumann are approaching the crime scene. They
continue past it, towards the Principal's office. But
suddenly -- somebody runs past at the other end of the
hallway. They see it and draw their guns. At the end, Whiton,
sweaty and panting, is hiding behind a wall.
LAURA
Who's there. Come out with your
hand in the air.
They continue down the hall. Dumann branches off into another
hallway.
DUMANN
Come out. No use in hiding.
He turns a corner and sees a man run past. Dumann runs after
him. When he reaches the turn, boxes suddenly turn over onto
him. Whiton runs off, towards the exit.
Laura has heard the noise. She runs towards the boxes.
LAURA
Dumann......are you OK?
She stops and sees the exit door close and continues towards
Dumann. A she gets there, Dumann has already pulled himself
out, and is fixing his jacket, collar, etc.
LAURA
Are you alright?
DUMANN
Yeah! (looks onto the floor) but
this fell out of the boxes.
Tons on old yearbooks have fallen out. Laura picks one up.
It's From the year 1970. She flips it open, but stops at the
page where she sees the Skull and Arrow. It was a comic team
known as Last Comic Standing. They were expelled from school
for religeous disbelief and spreading of false propaganda.
LAURA
There it is. The Skull.
DUMANN
A Comic Team.
LAURA
I guess so.
DUMANN
That man was Whiton.
LAURA
Who?
DUMANN
That man that ran out. His name is
Ken Whiton. Notorious murderer.
Could never be caught. Still at
large. Might be connected to those
Razor Murders.
LAURA
Right. Right. Come on, we got to
get to the Police Station.
They leave.
INT. SAN FRANCISCO P.D. - OFFICES
Laura is at the front desk.
LAURA
So, this is his current known
address, Claire.
CLAIRE
Yes. Nothing else shows up. Except
his apartment number.
LAURA
Alright. Thanks Claire.
CLAIRE
You're welcome.
DUMANN
What now?
LAURA
I guess we go to his apartment.
Barton approaches Laura and Dumann. He's still got a cup of
Coffee.
INSPECTOR BARTON
Hey you two. Where were you?
LAURA
At the school. Checking it out
again. But we came upon somebody.
DUMANN
He got away.
INSPECTOR BARTON
Yes, Johnson tells me, that while
he was downtown he arrested some
guy. And he was carrying a note. It
said "they're almost there. Get
out!".
DUMANN
Maybe it was to warn the guy at the
school.
INSPECTOR BARTON
I don't know. Well, anyway,
continue what you were doing.
INT. VICTORIA APARTMENTS - DAY
Laura and Dumann are in the hallway. They're waiting for the
door to open.
DUMANN
What do you think he'll try to use
as an excuse? I wasn't there. I
never heard of the School that's 2
blocks from my Apartment.
LAURA
I don't care......he's no suspect
yet. I just want to find out if he
was there.
The door swings open. A man stands in the middle.
DUMANN
Ken Whiton?
The man nods. This is Ken Whiton. Early Thirties, blue eyes,
just woke up, and messed up hair.
LAURA
Mr. Whiton. We have some questions
for you, regarding your visit at
the school today.
Whiton leans against the door frame.
WHITON
Yes, I was there.
LAURA
Do you mind telling us what it is
that you were doing there?
WHITON
I was delivering some packets.
Yearbooks I think.
DUMANN
30 year old yearbooks.
WHITON
I don't know what they're doing
with them. Maybe they've got a
collection going.
DUMANN
What about any disturbances in the
past 3 months around here? These
apartments are pretty close to the
School.
WHITON
I didn't see anything.
LAURA
Nothing suspicious? Nothing you
want to tell us?
WHITON
I told you everything there is to
tell already. I wasn't there at the
school when that lady was finished
off.
Laura, suddenly, stops and thinks. Nobody, except the Police
Department knows about the murder. And she didn't tell him.
LAURA
Alright sir. If we have any
questions again, we'll call you. If
you have any, call us at this
number (gives him a card).
Whiton looks at the card blankly.
WHITON
Alright Lieutenant.
LAURA
It's detective.
WHITON
Alright Detective.
He slams the door shut. Laura bends down. Dumann looks at
what she's doing. She takes an evidence bag and puts a piece
of hair into it. She marks it Whiton.
INT. WHITON'S APARTMENT
He goes over to the telephone. He picks it up and dials a
number. 3 seconds later somebody answers.
WHITON
Yes, it's Whiton.
WHITON
She was here. Asking.
WHITON
Asking why I was at the school.
WHITON
You damn right, I told her about
the boxes.
WHITON
Alright. I'll be there in 15.
He hangs up.
EXT. DUMANN'S CAR
Laura and Dumann are getting into the car.
LAURA
I think this guy may have done it?
DUMANN
What gives you that idea?
LAURA
Didn't you listen to anything he
said?
DUMANN
No. But please....go Ahead.
LAURA
Alright. So.....when you asked him
about any disturbances, he said he
didn't see anything.
DUMANN
So. He just didn't see anything.
LAURA
No. He could have just said, beside
from the ones we got at the
apartment, no.
LAURA
And, when I asked him if there was
anything suspicious he wanted to
tell us about, he just came right
out and said, I wasn't there at the
school when she got killed.
DUMANN
So...sounds like a good alibi.
LAURA
Yes, but except for the part where
I never mentioned anything about
the murder. And besides, he was the
one who slipped that money to the
homeless guy.
Dumann is speechless. He steps on the gas.
INT. CITY SLUMS - SOMEWHERE
Something is wrong. The gang is coming together into a huge
circle. In the middle are the Throne Man and Whiton. They are
arguably fighting.
THRONE MAN
.....what could you have said? You
could have said that you're a
window washer. Or the garbage man.
But not that you weren't present at
the time the murder happened.
WHITON
I know, I know, I'm sorry. It'll
never happen again.
THRONE MAN
Now we can't go out anywhere with
too many cops in the vicinity. She
saw our faces and made the
connection.
WHITON
So we have to shut her up.
THRONE MAN
What will happen now, if we go
ahead with the plan. What will
happen if somebody recognizes us,
and the cops catch us?
We'll all go to jail, because of
one little wrong sentence (calms
down)
none the less, we'll still go
through with the plan. We just have
to do it with those two over our
heads.
He looks at everybody in the room. They look back at him.
EXT. NINTH AVENUE - PARK CHOW RESTAURANT - NIGHT
The Restaurant is busy, as usual. It's really fancy for a
Restaurant of it's size. People are lining up outside just to
eat in there. Basically -- it's full.
Dumann is waiting at the door. He's already been admitted,
but is waiting for Jenny Hartman. After a little waiting --
she arrives in her car. A valet opens the door, she gets out,
and the Valet drives the car off. Dumann meets her halfway.
DUMANN
Hi. You look lovely this evening.
JENNY
Oh....thank You. You're really
charming. I love your suit.
Dumann pats it over. He chuckles nervously.
DUMANN
Ha Ha....i Know. It took me a few
paychecks to get it...but now i
have it.
Dumann motions her to go inside.
DUMANN
Shall we.....
JENNY
....yes We shall.
He leads her inside and to their table. Dumann pulls her
chair out and she sits down. He goes over to the waiter and
gets 2 menus. He proceeds to sit down.
DUMANN
It really is a fancy restaurant,
you know. Been here for at least a
couple of years.
Jenny laughs at that.
JENNY
You don't really know.
DUMANN
No. I just figured you wouldn't be
able to tell the difference.
JENNY
Well in any case...it is really
nice of you to bring me here.
DUMANN
I know what you like.
EXT. JEFFERSON STREET - NIGHT
The whole street is quiet. Nobody's outside. Not even cats or
dogs. Laura's lights are on.
INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
Laura is sitting in front of the TV. She's watching a movie
and eating popcorn. The phone rings. She picks up.
LAURA
Oh, hi Dumann.
LAURA
I'm watching a movie. And yes, I'm
still thinking about this case.
LAURA
No, I just don't understand why
somebody would break a razor blade?
Or not think about what they said?
LAURA
You're right. I'm off to bed. I'll
see tomorrow. So, how was the date?
LAURA
Ooohhh i see. See her again huh.
Alright.
She hangs up and gets out of the sofa. She walks up the
stairs to the bedroom.
EXT. HOLY MATRIMONY CHURCH - DAY
The day is wonderful. People are gathering for the usual
Sunday Church Mass. People of both Young and Old came. They
are all standing outside of church, waiting to go in.
All the important pastors and priests are there. From
different counties and states. Today is a special mass. The
Throne Man and his thugs walk into the scene. Dressed like
other churchgoers, they slip by unnoticed into the church.
EXT. HOLY MATRIMONY CHURCH - 1 HOUR LATER
The throne man and the thugs walk out. Just then, everybody
starts going into the church. People mistake him for somebody
they know.
MAN 1
Hello Joseph.
The throne man waves.
MAN 2
Hello Kenneth. I knew this is the
last time I'm going to see you,
before we go away on our trip.
THRONE MAN
(laugs casually) I know. And some
trip you'll have.
The three of them walk away from the scene. A few people are
left outside, but soon go in. When everybody is settled,
Throne Man's thugs slam the doors shut (nobody notices) and
lock them.
PRIEST
Could I ask everyone to turn to
page 442.
Everybody does so.
The priest turns around and starts reading. As he's reading,
he takes a candle off of the counter, and -- hears something
beeping. He stops reading.
People look up to see what happened.
The priest leans closer just to see -- 3 seconds left.
PRIEST
OH SHIT.............
BOOM. A huge ball of fire erupts from the roof. It blasts out
through the windows and blows the locked door off the hinges.
Chairs, candle holders, organ pipes and other stuff fly about
and out of the church. On the front of the church yard, oil
has been spilled by someone. As the debris flies, a piece of
burning wood lands on the oil and sets it on fire.
The fire quickly forms the Skull and Arrow. We know who's
that is already.
INT. LAURA'S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - DAY
The pone rings. Laura comes running out of the kitchen and
picks up.
LAURA
Hello.
LAURA
Oh, hi Inspector Barton.
LAURA
Oh I didn't hear the news.
She turns the TV on and switches a few channels.
LAURA
Oh my god! That's horrible. Who
would do such....
She stops. On the TV the burnt in Skull takes her attention
away from the phone call.
LAURA
What? Come to the School? Why?
LAURA
Forensics?.......OK. I'll be there.
She hangs up and gets her car keys and gun.
EXT. PRESTON WOODS HIGH SCHOOL
A few cop cars are parked in front of the school. Laura
drives up and gets out.
INT. SCHOOL CAFETERIA - ON LAURA
As she moves under the police tape blocking off the crime
scene. The forensics team are there already with Dumann.
DUMANN
Laura.
The team turns around and greet her.
LAURA
So....what Happened. Why am I here?
A man named Burke approaches her.
BURKE
Well, we called you down here
because this (shows her the blade)
seemed to bother you.
LAURA
Yes.
BURKE
Well, as you know, the blade was
found broken in half. Your captain
thought somebody stepped on it. So
he sent it here for tests.
LAURA
And.
DUMANN
Nobody stepped on it.
BURKE
Yes. Nobody. But -- there was quite
a struggle. This lady really put up
a fight.
LAURA
How do you know.
BURKE
Well, we analyzed the floor and
found a lot of little stab marks
fitting the profile of the blade.
Also, at some point, she must have
tried to wriggle free and the guy
slipped. That's what broke the
blade, as he came down with it on
the ground.
LAURA
But why did he leave it here?
BURKE
Could be because he has no need for
it because it's broken. Could be to
intimidate you. Or to throw you of
guard.
LAURA
Yes. Any fingerprints?
BURKE
Just a few on the blade and around
the ground where they struggled. A
few are from the lady. Most are
from this man --
He takes out a photo of Whiton.
DUMANN
This is the man?
BURKE
Yes. We just got the photo this
morning.
LAURA
Well, OK. Is there anything else we
need to know?
BURKE
No, this pretty much sums it up.
DUMANN
We gotta put out a warrant on him.
Do you have a phone?
BURKE
Yeah, it's right over there.
Dumann walks over to the phone and dials. Laura takes a look
around the crime scene.
LAURA
Why was there nobody else here?
BURKE
What do you mean?
LAURA
Why were there no other cops? All I
saw was a few coroners and 3
officers.
BURKE
I don't know, but we came here the
day she was murdered, and there
were an unusual number of gang
members. Now, we initially thought
they were her friends, but "Gang
member" pretty much rules that
thought out.
LAURA
Did anybody do anything. Subdue
them or anything.
BURKE
Subdue them for what? Turns out
they were clean. But I'm never
forgetting their tattoo.
LAURA
Alright. We'll get going now.
Thanks.
BURKE
No problem.
Dumann hangs up and rejoins Laura in the hallway.
LAURA
We have to go back to his
apartment.
DUMANN
The arrest is up. Cops will be out
looking for him.
EXT. VICTORIA APARTMENTS - DAY
They are at the front door again. Guns drawn.
LAURA
Is backup coming?
DUMANN
Yes, but they'll be here in 30.
Traffic's kicking their ass.
LAURA
Damn.
Dumann knocks on the door. No answer. He knocks again. No one
seems to be there.
The door is broken in. Dumann and Laura storm in. Nobody is
in the Living room.
Laura checks the bedrooms. Dumann goes around the kitchen.
Nobody.
LAURA
There's nobody here.
DUMANN
So now what? They probably bailed.
Then, behind them a storage door opens. A gun is trained on
them. Laura and Dumann slowly turn around.
THRONE MAN
That'll be far enough.
The Throne Man and 4 thugs, including Whiton, armed to the
teeth, come out. Throne Man is the only one without a gun.
THUG 2
Drop the guns.
THRONE MAN
Now, now Gerome. Don't be so rash.
I don't think they'll shoot us, if
they want to be murderers, without
us being aggressive.
He points to the cameras on the wall.
THRONE MAN
Or being caught on the cameras.
LAURA
You have the right to remain
silent. Anything you say can be
used against you.
THRONE MAN
And how do you think you'll explain
to your superiors, how the church
was destroyed. They will think that
you did it, and we'll get away
unscathed.
DUMANN
So you'll go around, killing off
people.
THRONE MAN
Teaching. Teaching People. Teaching
them about the true horrors of
Religion, and force them to take up
our new religion.
LAURA
To take up your religion, and do
what you people do.
THRONE MAN
You People. Listen to these words.
Are you segregating us because of
our religious beliefs?
DUMANN
No, nobody's segregating you.
THUG
You bullshitter, you people can't
resist --
A fight of words breaks out.
DUMANN
-- what are you talking about, we --
LAURA
-- nobody has to do this. It
doesn't have to be this way --
Suddenly, Thug 2 produces his gun. Dumann shoots him.
Laura and Dumann take cover behind the Kitchen. The Throne
Man runs out of the room. Thug 1 sneaks over to the kitchen.
Thug 1 sees Laura. He fires. The slug hits her in the
shoulder. She shoots his back.
LAURA
Come out with your hands in the
air, however many of you there are.
But the two other thugs have -- run off. Dumann helps Laura
up.
DUMANN
Are you alright? Does it Hurt?
LAURA
It's OK. I'll be alright.
EXT. VICTORIA APARTMENTS - DAY
Outside, the cops have caught The Throne Man and the two
Thugs. The thugs are kicking and screaming. The Throne Man
remains calm. A officer is reading them their rights. Laura
and Dumann come out of the Building. She's holding her arm.
Inspector Barton meets them halfway.
INSPECTOR BARTON
Detectives. What was all this
about?
DUMANN
Murders.
INSPECTOR BARTON
Alright. I just needed to hear it
from you. I'll expect a report from
the both of you in the next 2 days.
He walks away. Laura looks after him.
