Before them sits the worlds fastest production car, the most powerful, exotic car any of them have ever seen. THOMPSON Youre going to let him drive that? BOSS (to Hays) You break it, you bought it. HAYS And how much would that cost me? BOSS About 1.2 million...plus taxes. PAINTER Youre looking at some serious overtime, Hays. HAYS Who can afford to buy a car like this? BOSS My Uncle Henry. He opens the drivers side door, slips behind the wheel, and starts up the car. The car comes alive, and he notices the tools hanging above his workbench are moving from the vibrations. Hays pulls up to a stop sign and views the intersection of a four-lane highway. He looks around and sees no traffic. He turns onto the highway leading out of town and stops. Its a quiet Sunday morning. Hays has waited a lifetime for this moment. He looks around for traffic and sees all is clear. Cut TO: INT BUGATTI - mOMENTS LATER[] The car and Hays sit there idling. The monstrous power of the car is mesmerizing as it quietly rumbles. As Hays sits there staring straight ahead down the highway, his hands take a 10 and 2 position on the steering wheel, and then he hears a VOICE, a booming reverberating voice hes heard a thousand times at motor shows and autopaloozas for the past twenty years, but this voice was introducing something special: VOICE Ladies and gentlemen! Please let me direct your attention to our center stage...to Fantasy Land. Introducing something rather exotic...the Bugatti Veyron 16.4...the worlds fastest, most powerful production sports car...two V-8 cylinder blocks form the 8-liter quad turbo W-16 engine producing 1001 horse power. 0-60 in 2.9 seconds...0-100 in 6.3 seconds...0-186 miles per hour in 14 seconds...estimated top speed 252 miles per hour. Cut TO: EXT RURAL INTERSECTION OF HIGHWAY - moMENTS LATER[] A State Highway PATROLMAN pulls up to the intersection of the four-lane and stops. CUT TO: INT PATROL CAR - mOMENTS LATER[] The patrolman sits in his car facing the highway. He may be able to pick up a speeder this morning, but there are more important things to do right now. He reaches into the paper sack beside him and takes out a cup of coffee and a doughnut. Cut tO: EXT HIGHWAY - MOMENTS LATER[] A RABBIT hops out of the ditch to the side of the highway. All is quiet. He takes a couple more hops and now sits in the middle of the highway. Cut TO: INT BUGATTi - mOMENTS LATER[] Hays looks at his speedometer...100 MPH...110 CUT TO: EXT another section of highway - mOMENTS LATER[] A LITTLE OLD LADY in a yellow 74 VW Super Beetle comes off a ramp onto the highway...shes going 45 MPH. CUT TO: ExT hIGHWAY - momENTS LATER[] At 137 MPH we see the nose of the Bugatti dropping and the rear spoiler elevating to keep the car from going airborne. CUT TO: INT paTROL CAR - mOmENTS LATER[] The patrolman is working pretty hard on his doughnuts when he glances to his left and squints at something coming down the highway, not quite able to make out what it is. CUT TO: INT bUGATTI - momENTS LATER[] The speedometer reads 150...160...170 CUT TO: EXT hIGHWAY (RABBIT) - moments later [] The rabbit sits on the highway and stares at the Bugatti coming right at him. He drops his doughnut, fumbles with his coffee, lurches for his radar gun, and then decides to pursue the speeder. He flips on his siren and lights and takes off after the Bugatti. CUT TO: INT bUGATTI - momENTS LATER[] Hays glances down at his speedometer...220 MPH CUT TO: ExT highway - momENTS LATER[] The VW is scooting along in the right-hand lane. CUT TO: INT VW - momENTS LATER[] The little old lady is singing her heart out at 46 MPH. CUT TO: INT BUGATTI - momENTS LATER[] Hays sees the VW ahead and moves into the left lane, slowing down to 200 MPH. CUT TO: INT VW - momENTS LATER[] The little old lady is right in the middle of the chorus when the Bugatti roars past and causes the VW to shake a little. LITTLE OLD LADY Must be late for church. CUT TO: INT bugatti - momENTS LATER[] Hays starts decelerating, looking for a place to turn around. CuT TO: INT patrol CAR - momENTS LATER[] The patrolman is now screaming down the highway about a hundred miles per hour in pursuit when he looks across the median and sees the Bugatti going about 200 MPH in the other direction. CUT TO: ExT hays driveway - later[] The Bugatti is sitting in the driveway as Hays, still in his bathrobe, wipes the bugs off the front of the car. As Hays works on the car, the patrolman slowly drives by and stares at Hays. 00020000070800002BC0702,As Hays continues to clean the car, the patrolman cruises by again from the opposite direction and looks intently at Hays, who notices the cop but tries to avert eye contact. Finally the patrolman, having turned around again, comes back and stops at the end of the driveway. He gets out of the patrol car and walks slowly up to Hays cleaning the car. HAYS (working feverishly) Officer? Patrolman Quite a car you got here. HAYS Just cleaning it up a little. PATROLMAN Been out driving this morning? HAYS (not looking up)) No. Just got out of bed. PATROLMAN (looking at the windshield) This looks like the remains of a grasshopper. Hays keeps working on the front of the car. PATROLMAN (CONTD) He musta been doin 180 miles an hour when he hit this windshield. Not much left of im. Hays moves to the windshield and takes a closer look at the gory mess. HAYS Grassius hoppoticus. Thats a pretty fast moving species. Hays begins cleaning the bug off the windshield. PATROLMAN Dont see many cars like this around here. HAYS Im delivering it to a rich guy in Aspen. PATROLMAN Thats a good place for a car like this. A guy could get in trouble driving this around. CUT TO: ExT driveway - lATER[] Hays is casually dressed as he puts a small suitcase on the passenger side seat. CUT TO: EXT highway - lATER[] Hays is driving down the interstate about 65 MPH. As he is driving along, cars are passing him, passengers admiring the Veyron. A few give him a thumbs up. DISSOLVE TO: Ext HIGHWAY - early evening As Hays is driving along, he passes a sign that reads LEAVING KANSAS...WELCOME TO COLORADO. The skies are growing darker when he sees a young man ELROY FINCH trying to hitch a ride. Elroy is a lanky, goody-looking 20 year old with a backpack standing alone along the interstate. 00020000061F000032C2619,Hays slows down and pulls to a stop, and Elroy runs to catch his ride. Elroy takes off on whats called the auctioneers chant and goes for about ten seconds as if he were auctioning off a pig at the county fair. HAYS (CONTD) Very good, Elroy! Man, you got it. Very good indeed. ELROY Yep, my daddys an auctioneer and his daddy before him and my Uncle Zeke and my cousin Eldon...and now me. HAYS Im very impressed. ELROY Went to school for a week. Cost me a thousand dollars. Now I can make some money. HAYS Youre gonna do all right. Hays looks at the skies in front of him and off to the southwest. A severe high pressure system is developing over eastern Colorado and western Kansas. This system may produce high winds and damaging hail. This alert is in effect until 10:00 PM Central Daylight Time and 9:00 PM Mountain Daylight Time. I repeat...a severe high... HAYS Oh shit. ELROY Hey, youre welcome to stay at my house. CUT TO: EXT RURAL COLORADO - mOMENTS LATER The Bugatti is making its way down a back road in the middle of nowhere, the land as flat as can be, the wind picking up with dark clouds continuing to roll in from the southwest. Its a little dilapidated white house with a front porch and a barn nearby thats in not much worse shape than the house. The barn, doors standing wide open, looks as if it could fall down at any moment. CUT TO: INT BUGATTI - mOMENTS LATER ELROY Just pull er right in the barn. Ill get that ol tire out of the way. CUT TO: Ext Barnyard - momENTS LATER Elroy hops out of the car and clears the barn floor for Hays to pull the car inside. Hays pulls the Veyron into the barn, gets out, and helps Elroy close the barn doors. Then they head toward the house as the wind begins to pick up and the skies grow darker. HAYS I appreciate your helping me out, Elroy. ELROY Well I appreciate your gettin me home. HAYS Hope this is all right with your mom and dad. ELROY Heck, they dont care. Hays and Elroy step onto the weathered porch and approach the door. Hays almost trips and falls down as a cat scurries out of the way. Elroy opens the door and they enter. CuT TO: Int Elroys house - evenING Elroy and Hays enter the old house and find themselves in the kitchen, which is clean, homey, and old-fashioned. A big pot-bellied stove sits along one wall. In the center of the room is a huge, old wooden kitchen table. Getting up from the chairs around the table are Elroys MOM and DAD, GRANDPA, GRANDMA, UNCLE ZEKE, and AUNT LELA. Grandma raises her hand as if to bid, and Elroy acknowledges the signal; then Uncle Zeke does the same, and then Dad, and each time Elroys chant reflects the imaginary bidding war going on. Then he stops. ELROY What do ya think? Grandpa then takes off on a chant and stops. Then Uncle Zeke takes off on his own kind of chant. Then Dad does the same in his own kind of way. MOM Now, if everybodys done foolin around, well git supper ready. ELROY Sounds good. How ya like fried chicken and mashed potatoes? HAYS Theres nothin better. CUT TO: INT KITCHEN - MOMENTS LATER A series of shots fading in and out show everyone pitching in to get supper ready. Hays is peeling potatoes, Grandma is snapping string beans, Mom is frying up chicken, and Aunt Lela is preparing lettuce for a salad. Another series of shots show everyone eating their meal, joking, and carrying on. Dad brings in a big pitcher of beer from the back porch and starts filling up the mugs. Then he refills the big pitcher and sits it in the middle of the table. The men, who are casually dressed, are not a seriously rough-looking group. A couple low riders are parked nearby next to a banged up 1971 Barracuda. Hays directs the car into one of the empty stalls. He gets out of the car and looks at the display panel of options. Hays looks at some change from his pocket and starts walking toward the bill changer several yards away. As Hays walks behind an SUV being washed, he glances at a terrific-looking womans behind near the front of the vehicle. Shes backing her way around spraying as she goes. Hays hesitates and stares at the behind for a second before getting to the bill changer. Hays inserts a couple dollars, gets some quarters, and starts heading back to his car. Again he takes a long hard look at the behind now closer to him. At the display panel Hays starts inserting some quarters and accidentally drops one. The quarter rolls around the corner to the other stall and stops. Hays follows the rolling quarter and sees that it has stopped right behind that terrific behind, now closer than before. Just when the woman is ready to turn around, KURT RUSSELLS voice booms from the front of the SUV. K. RUSSELL Hey! Is there something I can do for you? Hays looks up at a mildly upset Kurt Russell walking toward him from the front of the SUV. The woman stands and turns to face Hays, who realizes the great behind belongs to Goldie Hawn. She leans over at the same time as Hays, and they knock heads. They stand up rubbing their heads. K. RUSSELL It looked to me like you couldnt take your eyes off her butt. Hays shuts off the pressure as Russell storms toward him. K. RUSSELL Thats it! Russell pushes Hays against the stall wall and confronts him. K. RUSSELL (CONTD) (up close and personal) Were here minding our own business when you decide you want to gawk at this ladys butt, head-butt her into next week, and then do the full-frontal wet t-shirt thing. Henry stops and stares at something on the side of the car. He looks more closely at it, getting down on one knee. Hays moves closer to Henry. HENRY What do we have here? Henry wets his finger and runs it over the spot as Hays looks on. HeNRY (CONTD) Dirt. HaYS Youre not going to report me are you? Henry gets back up. HENRY Heres what were gonna do. I rode my bike into town. I brought some rope with me. You can pull me back home. HAYS What? HENRY Youll see. Theres nothing to it. Ill just have to tell you where to drive. HAYS Boy, Henry. CUT TO: Ext outskirts of town - momENTS LATER Henry pulls the bike to a stop, then steers it to the back of the Bugatti. He gets off the bike, rope in hand. Hays gets out of the car and walks back to Henry. HeNRY Okay, lets just tie this to the car. Is that possible? HaYS Henry, are you sure about this? HENRY Im not sure where to tie it. Thats what Im not sure about. Hays takes the rope, crawls under the back end of the car and secures both ends to the frame. Henry pulls the rope back from the car and loops it over the handlebars down to the stem of the bike. He pulls back the bike to make the rope taut. HeNRY (CONTD) Ready? Just dont go psycho on me. This beats peddling up a mountain. Hays shakes his head and gets into the car.
