Retrospection By Shashi Parab Plot No. 41, Sur No. 67 Vidya Nagar, Pune 411032 E-mail – shashi778@sify.com PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A SILENT MOVIE HENCE NO DIALOGUES FADE IN A full computer Screen with a green background slowly fades in. The cursor goes to that start button which is at left bottom corner of the screen. The cursor clicks the button and the main menu appears, the cursor goes to open the Microsoft Word Processor. In the background is a typical noise that can be only of an office, we easily come to know that the writer is an employee working in an office that has many employees working around him. The noise fades as the word processor opens. The word processor opens with a default page. The writer aligns centrally so the cursor jumps in the center of the page and types with a bigger font size "RETROSPECTION' then the cursor starts typing from left with capital Letters. We will closely follow the typed letters. Following is the format, which will be written on the page and the camera will follow each alphabet. RETROSPECTION YEAR 1997 – PASSED X STANDARD WITH DISTINCTION - GOT ADMISSION FOR DIPLOMA IN COMPUTER ENGINEERING - GOT LATE FOR COLLEGE SOCCER SELECTION YEAR 1998 - PASSED FIRST YEAR WITH FIRST CLASS - PROPOSED RITA – REJECTED - NO SOCCER SELECTIONS THAT YEAR YEAR 1999 - PASSED SECOND YEAR WITH SECOND CLASS - PROPOSED RITA – REJECTED - FAILED TO GET SELECTED IN SOCCER SELECTION TRAILS YEAR 2000 - PASSED FINAL YEAR WITH FIRST CLASS - RITA GOT MARRIED - REPRESENTED COLLEGE IN INTER-COLLEGIATE SOCCER After typing the last sentence 'REPRESENTED COLLEGE IN INTER-COLLEGIATE SOCCER'. The writer deletes the full sentence and types again SELECTED IN COLLEGE TEAM AS A RESERVE, NEVER GOT A CHANCE TO PLAY YEAR 2001 - STRUGGLED TO GET A JOB - STUDIED DIPLOMA IN MULTIMEDIA YEAR 2003 - GOT A FULL-TIME, 9 TO 5 JOB AT WORLDSITES - GOT MY NEW BIKE YEAR 2004 - GOT FIRST INCREMENT The document is saved by the name 'Retrospection'. The writer closes the document and the word processor. Then he shuts down the PC. As the machine gets shut we zoom out. Roark 25, is winding things and getting ready to leave the office. As the machines shuts down Roark makes his way towards the main door of his e-commerce company, Worldsites. He swaps his swap card and heads towards parking lot. Gets hold of his bike and steadily moves out of the gates of the building. CUT TO EXT. – LAW COLLEGE ROAD – DAY A COOL MUSIC IS PLAYING IN THE BACKGROUND, WHICH REFLECTS THE COOL COMPOSURE OF ROARK AND THE BEAUTIFUL EVENING ON THE ROAD. It's a beautiful evening. We are facing Roark who is driving his Bike rather slowly as he has all the time in the world unlike others people on the uncrowded road who are speeding. Roark has a cool composure, why shouldn't he, after struggling for 2 years he got a nice 9 to 5 Job in a big Company. Roark sees something on the one side of the road, he slows his Bike. CUT TO On the side of the road is a Volleyball ground where young people of all age are playing volleyball. We see a sweet South Asian girl in a beautiful tracksuit playing with her Dad. Her age may be 6 years also trying to impress her mother who is sitting on the bench outside the ground. They might be Korean or maybe Japanese. Most of people playing are localities. CUT TO We are behind Roark so we are able to see the back of the Roark and also the Volleyball game in the background. We are not sure though Roark is jealous of them or feeling happy for them. He kicks starts his bike and leaves. CUT TO It's the same beautiful road and thanks god there is no much traffic, might be an industrial holiday. This time we allow Roark to cross us so that we can follow him. On the right in HDFC Bank and an ATM center, and an evergreen MOON'S KICHEN, pizzazz is their specialty. Anyway we are with this dick, Roark. He takes a right turn and we follow him. CUT TO We are following Roark and again he slows down the bike and stops it on the side of the Road. On his right is a big ground. On one side is a Football ground, where we see a SOCCER match is in Progress. This time Roark doesn't stand and stare; he starts the bike and heads towards the parking lot. BACKGROUND MUSIC STOPS HERE CUT TO EXT. - PARKING SHED From the parking, we have a very nice view of a soccer match. Roark is sitting on his bike watching the match with few other dicks of his kind. The goal post is near to the parking so we have a good view of the match along with Roark. CUT TO Roark is very excited to watch the match. He makes a formal introduction with a similar fan of soccer. He gets back to the match. We leave Roark and go to where there is more action. The Scoreline reads DECCAN XI – 1 - SP XI – 1 It's second half. The match is getting tough. Both the teams are trying there best to take the lead. Deccan XI is in Blue T-shirts and SP XI is in White T-shirts. Lo the main striker of Deccan XI has entered the D of SP XI nicely supported by the right wing striker. We hear an occasional 'shoot' 'pass' words coming from his teammates & the crowd. The main striker has the ball and is in the striking distance near the goal. He doges 2 strikers and shoots the ball, misses the goalpost. Too selfish, had he given a pass to the right wing striker, it may have been a goal. Curses himself, some teammates show their annoyances for self play, some cheer. CUT TO Roark is completely into the match; his body language suggests as if he is one of the substitute encouraging his teammates. He is disappointed on that missed opportunity more than the Deccan XI's coach. CUT TO Back to the match; the defense of Deccan XI is too strong, as they do not allow SP XI to penetrate in their camp. Some attempts are made by SP XI but are fruitless either the shots go wide off target or the ball is snatched by the Deccans. The Deccan XI seems to be stronger team but are not able to convert opportunities into a goal. At the dying minutes of the game, the striker shoots nice towards the goal but a fine goalkeeping by the goalkeeper who nicely intercepts the ball, deprives a goal to Deccan XI. The referee whistles signifying the end of the match. CUT TO The Deccan XI coach goes mad after his team's performance. His expressions suggest as he is trying to make a point as why his strikers didn't pass the ball. CUT TO Roark is watching the Coach. His eyes suggest that of a beggar who is always expecting. CUT TO We are with Deccan XI as it is their playground and SP XI is leaving. Deccan XI Coach is giving tips to his players. After that he asks them to take a rest. All the players free themselves and throw their body on the ground. CUT TO Roark gets down from his bike and slowly walks towards the Coach. His walking reflects his lack of confidence. He approaches the Coach and introduces himself. He asks if he can be come to play in the evenings. Coach has a long look at Roark then plans to have a little fun for his players who were just fired. We see all this from a distance and since it's a silent movie no dialogues will be heard even if Coach and Roark speak. Coach invites Roark to dodge the ball he is holding. Roark tries hard to snatch the Ball but never succeeds. CUT TO The players of Deccan XI nicely enjoy the inefficiency of Roark, who struggles to get hold of the Ball. Some giggle, some laugh, some crank calls. CUT TO Roark now bit irritated with his self-efficiency tries to get the ball rather fiercely misses the ball and fells on the ground. CUT TO All the players who are lazing give a heartily laugh on poor Roark CUT TO Pathetic Roark gets up, Coach smiles at Roark then asks him to run 3 times around the ground. Roark looks at the laughing players; one of them raises his finger suggesting a slang term. CUT TO Roark starts to run around the ground. The first round he jogs without much effort, in his second round he is exhausted and he stops to take few deep breaths and is disappointed with his own physical energy. Drags himself for third round, he seems to be completely exhausted, sweating, face turning red, hairs drenched in sweat and face hopeless. Still he drags himself and somehow completes the third round. He throws himself around the resting players not bothering to their taunting. Even the other players stop irritating him. The coach now asks the players to line up for some practice before calling a day. It's one to one dribbling practice. CUT TO Roark looks at the players while he breathes heavily. After few minutes of practice the coach calls it a day. All players wind up, but Roark waits for the Coach to leave. Coach calls Roark and suggests him to join the practice from tomorrow this we can presume by the handshake and Coach giving him some tips to smiling Roark. CUT TO INT. – CHAMPION SPORTS SHOP – NIGHT Roark is trying football studs (shoes to play Soccer), he selects one and asks the salesman for a Football, The salesmen asks him to accompany at the other section of the shop. After reaching the other section, he stops staring at a beautiful lady accompanied her tall & hefty Husband. The Lady is pregnant & is holding a hand of a 2-year-old baby; Roark watches this and hesitates to enter. The salesman looks at him suggesting to step in. The lady catches Roark entering and keeps staring at him. Roark reaches the counter and looks back at the Lady, Their eyes meet just then the lady says hi. She introduces Roark to her husband. They have a formal talk. The salesman shows Roark a set of different balls. He chooses the first football the salesman shows and moves out of the section saying bye to the lady and her man. The lady looks passionately to Roark as he leaves. CUT TO EXT.- OUTSIDE ROARK HOUSE – EVENING Roark is practicing football with same studs he purchased from the shop. He is trying to control the ball and bring some of the lost touch he had few years back. CUT TO INT. - OFFICE – WORLDSITES Roark has switched off his computer and hurrying towards main door, swaps his cards and gets a big bag from the security, which he had deposited earlier. With that bag he enters the Toilet in the basement. We are not shameless to go behind him so we wait outside with the watchmen. Lo we see changed Roark with shorts, studs and a T-shirt. The watchman is confused. Roark smiles back suggesting that he is going to play SOCCER. Watchman smiles back. CUT TO EXT. – LAW COLLEGE ROAD Roark is now a busy man. No more stand and stare kind of person. He speeds his bike and we are left alone to see the same people and a sweet Korean girl playing volleyball. But Roark has already left. CUT TO EXT. – FOOTBALL GROUND Roark is lined up along with other players of the team. Excited and full of Energy. The coach asks everybody to jog 3 rounds around the ground to warmup. So now we see Roark jogging along with other teammates. At the end of third round most of the guys complete without much fuss but we see 3 guys lagging behind, Of course Roark is one of them. Somehow he finishes. Everybody relaxes before they could start practicing. After few moments the coach whistles suggesting to start the practice. The players are divided into two teams and each team is lined up heading each other at the distance 15 meters and both the sides pass football to their opponents. This practice is done to increase the passing abilities of the players. After that it's a practice match and we see Roark is central forward playing with full of passion. After 10 minutes he gets the ball and before he could even hold it, the opponent snatches from him, he makes a futile bid to get it back but in vain. His teammate shouts at him. He is now serious. After a while he gets a pass from one of his teammates he holds the ball for some time and gives a wrong pass. The opponents grab the ball again. Roark seems to be easy meat for them. Roark is disappointed with his own abilities. CUT TO It's the end of the practice session and the coach chooses the selected few and gives them the extra lesson while the more seasoned players play by their own game. Yeah Roark is among the selected ones. It feels bad for Roark but then fact is fact. A headline in middle of the screen – 'AFTER 15 DAYS' The headline slowly dissolves to a nice sunny afternoon. The scoreboard shows DECCAN XI V/S SP XI so we haven't missed the SOCCER match. The atmosphere is charged. There is enough crowd to see the match. Roark is in the team but sadly again in Reserves. Anyway it's a big day. Both the teams lock horn with each other. The referee whistles for a kick-start and the game begins. CUT TO Roark is enthusiastic and is not disappointed for being in Reserve. He cheers his team from his bench. The game progresses in a slower note and both the teams play cautiously without taking much risk. SP XI are better prepared and their goalkeeper is marvelous not giving any change to score. After few attempts from both the sides the first half finishes goalless. CUT TO All the players rest. Roark giving tips to the center forward who hears to him without giving much attention. Roark tries to cheer them. CUT TO The second half starts. And now both the teams play more aggressively. SP XI center forward dodges two defenders and gives a beautiful pass to his left-winger teammate who beautifully converts it into a goal. SP XI jubilates. CUT TO Roark shows his disappointment. Coach is mad again. CUT TO It's a kick off after SP's goal. CUT TO The scoreboard now reads DECCAN XI – 0 SP XI – 1 Now the Deccans are attacking looking for an equalizer but SP goalkeeper too good for them. After sometime the center forward nicely intercepts the cross and before he could score a goal he is bought down by the SP defender. The Center forward mourns in pain. The referee awards Deccan a penalty. The Center forward is badly hurt, a stretcher is bought to take him away from the ground. So this rules him out of the match. The DECCAN XI coach chooses Roark and sends him in the field. The match resumes and it's a tense moment as a DECCAN's player is about to take a penalty shot. A beautiful shot into the nets that beat the Goalkeeper and now it's DECCAN XI – 1 SP XI – 1 Roark takes his position and we see a more improved Roark with increased confidence and is more efficient. We see him receiving a pass from his team mate nicely dodges the opponent and passes it on to his team mate. The coach keeps shouting to attack. Now both the team are attacking aggressively trying not to repeat it like last match where the game ended in draw. Now its few minutes left in the game. Roark get a ball nicely dodges 2 opponents and passes to another striker to score the goal but striker in now surrounded by SP's defenders making him difficult to shoot. He passes back to Roark who shoots it into the goal post, giving no chance to the Goalkeeper. The scoreline reads DECCAN XI – 2 SP XI - 1 Everyone jubilates and congratulate Roark who also jubilates. After few moments the referee blows the whistle and Deccan Players all hug each other to celebrate their victory. Coach congratulates Roark for scoring the winning goal. CUT TO INT.- SILVER COMMUNICATION – DAY CLOSE UP ON THE SCREEN A cursor opens the word processor and opens the document named "Retrospection". We see the same document (below) that was saved earlier.
