"The Cost Of Life"
TEASER
FADE IN.
EXT. LIBERTY MARKET PLACE DAY
The sun is shining brightly as people go about their business. To the naked eye
this place looks normal, nice. As the camera pans over it, we hear a voice.
QUINN V.O
Twenty-two years ago Britain went to
war with Iraq. The whole population
tried to stop it, tried to put peace
first but they failed. Bombs were
dropped and blood was shed. Many
families were able to evacuate the
main cities, some went to other
countries where they would start again,
but the majority came to an island
called Eden.
We focus on a woman with her young child, laughing amongst the crowd. They look
happy, which is hard to believe.
QUINN V.O (CONT'D)
The island was a small place, split
into seven cities, the biggest being
just larger than London. They were
named, Stanport, Ashton, Isingter, New
London, Liberty, Embershire, and
Sun Valley. However, the authorities
soon found themselves in a war with the
local gangs. These gangs were made up
of broken families and homeless kids.
The most powerful being The Syndicate,
it has many followers and is the real
authority. They went to war with the
Falcon Ring, completely destroying the
peaceful place of Sun Valley.
The camera moves to an alleyway where we see some figures standing in the
shades. A shimmer of light reflects off a knife, grasped by a hand.
QUINN V.O (CONT'D)
Now there's nothing left in that place,
only destruction and memories of hate.
2.
QUINN V.O (CONT'D)
It is now referred to as the Badlands,
somewhere no one treads except transports
arranged by gangs. For many people this
island is a home they won't leave and for
the rest, it's an island they can't. So
for abandoned children the only option is
to join a gang, to be apart of a family.
That's what it was like for me, and for
the rest of the "Outcasts."
The shade in the alley retreats and we see four people standing there, none of
them older than twenty year old. The first one we see is FRANCIS QUINN, wearing
a bandana and holding the knife we saw before. A scar is visible above his left
eyebrow, something precious to him.
The next is a girl, ASHLEY SINCLAIR. Her sunglasses protect her from the
blinding light as she scans the market area. She takes a deep breath, almost as
if she was preying that everything went all right, not that she believed in God.
She looks behind her to see -
NOAH DEMOLSKI. He doesn't look out of place in a gang, it's where he's been his
whole life. He tugs at his leather jacket and nods to Ashley, who has turned
back to face Quinn.
We see a coloured girl behind him. She is SAMANTHA EVERETT, a strong willed gang
member with them being her only family. She brushes back her dark hair and puts
a baseball cap on.
The camera zooms out again to see them all standing in file. Quinn looks back on
them.
QUINN
Let's go save us a Mayor.
They walk out one by one and split up. Noah and Sam go one way, while we follow
Quinn and Ashley. They reach their spot right behind the statue of the Mayor, a
chubby man.
ASHLEY
There's gonna be some shots fired. You know
that, right?
QUINN
I know. I just hope the plan goes smoothly
and Noah and Sam can do it.
ASHLEY
You know they will, Quinn.
QUINN
I hope.
3.
He turns to look towards the crowd, spotting Noah and Sam amongst them.
ANGLE: NOAH AND SAM
He nudges Sam, seeing someone looking shifty near the stage. Sam sees him too
and nods.
SAM
He's one of the Scorpions.
NOAH
That means they're ready.
SAM
Then so are we.
She discreetly pulls out a pistol and places it in her belt. Noah sees this and
stops her.
NOAH
Let me.
SAM
That's not the plan.
NOAH
You shouldn't have to kill anyone.
SAM
I won't.
NOAH
Things go wrong.
SAM
Trust me, Noah. They won't.
ANGLE: QUINN AND ASHLEY
They each have their guns out. They are out of view from the crowd and anyone
else, mainly the rival gang members.
QUINN
Ashley.
ASHLEY
What?
QUINN
Lockston Apartments, top left window.
She turns to the building and sees a figure in the window with a gun, aiming
towards the stage.
4.
ASHLEY
I've got him.
QUINN
We don't know how many there are.
ASHLEY
But we soon will, huh?
Suddenly cheering erupts as MAYOR CHARLES ABBOTT walks onto the stage. He smiles
at his public and takes the mic. His eyes search through the crowd, looking at
everyone.
MAYOR ABBOTT
This day is a fine day for the island
of Eden. It marks the twenty-second
anniversary of our home. To the world
it seems just yesterday they were
fighting the war, but to us it could be
a thousand years ago. We have moved on
to form a new society, a new world. To
many countries, Eden does not exist, and
that is for the best. It means we can
steer clear of the hostilities between
great powers and the violence is -
THUD! The Mayor falls down onto the stage as Noah tackles him. Then a shot is
fired at them.
MAYOR ABBOTT (CONT'D)
What the...
NOAH
Stay down!
The crowd panics and tries to get out of the market place. We see Sam running
through them with her gun pointing at the man near the stage. She sees him
firing his gun and she pulls her trigger.
BANG! He falls down. We can see him holding his leg and realise she didn't shoot
to kill. However, as she checks to see she didn't kill him, she is attacked from
behind. The man grabs her head and throws her to the ground. She rolls and
sweeps out his legs. She jumps up, kicks his gun away, and holds hers to his
head.
SAM
That was just stupid.
WHACK! She slams the gun into his head, knocking him out. The place is almost
evacuated now and she sees Ashley and Quinn firing their guns to the windows in
the apartment. She turns back to see Noah getting the Mayor away. She goes to
help but it faced with a gun.
5.
Taking a moment to realise she's staring death in the face, she quickly pushes
the gun away and punches the man in the face. She hits him with her own gun
until he goes down. She jumps on top of
him and continues to punch him, now drawing blood.
Suddenly a hand grabs hers and pulls her away. She struggles, breaking free, and
then sees it's Noah. They stare at each other for a moment.
CUT TO:
INT. OUTCASTS WAREHOUSE FRONT AREA
BANG! The warehouse is decorated with posters and paintings, along with sofas
and a television [most probably stolen]. It's a large space, with a table and
chairs set up behind a counter which almost separates the room.
VOICE
You're better than me.
We turn to see MADISON MCDOUGALL, an innocent enough looking eighteen year old.
She is standing with GABRIEL SINCLAIR, Ashley's fourteen year old brother. He is
holding a gun, aiming at a few cans on the counter.
GABRIEL
It was lame.
MADISON
Well, yeah, you missed but it was
close.
GABRIEL
I hit the post.
This is when we see the post... about a meter away from the cans.
MADISON
Uh maybe we should not do this.
GABRIEL
Yeah. I'm so bad I'll probably end up
killing us.
MADISON
Like I said, let's stop.
She takes the gun from him and they sit down on the sofa. Madison takes a
cushion and holds it in front of her.
GABRIEL
Thanks.
6.
MADISON
What for?
GABRIEL
Staying with me. I know you wanna
be out there with them.
MADISON
No. Don't think that. To tell you
the truth I'm better here. I'm not
good with the action.
GABRIEL
Yeah. More brains, eh?
MADISON
That's right.
GABRIEL
You think they'll be all right?
MADISON
Sure.
GABRIEL
You think Ashley will be all right?
MADISON
C'mon, you know your sister can deal.
SMASH CUT TO:
EXT. MARKET PLACE
Ashley kicks a man back into the wall and then punches him across the face. She
struggles to get her gun as he kneels her in the gut. They grab each others
arms.
MAN #1
What ya gonna do now?
ASHLEY
Let me answer that with a knee to
the groin.
She knees him between the legs, hard. He slips down to the ground and she
smiles, turning back to the market.
QUINN
(shouts)
Fall back! Fall back!
ASHLEY
'Bout time!
7.
He rushes towards Ashley and takes her arm, both fleeing back into the alleyway.
Noah and Sam quickly follow. On this we...
BLACK OUT.

ACT ONE
FADE IN.
INT. OUTCASTS WAREHOUSE FRONT AREA DAY
Same as before. Madison and Gabriel are watching TV. Three KNOCKS sound on the
door. Madison pulls out her gun and walks towards it.
QUINN
Open it!
MADISON
Oh, it's you.
She pulls back the three locks and pulls open the door. Quinn, Ashley, Noah, and
Sam all walk in the door. Sam moves to the fridge and pulls out an ice pack, she
places it on her shoulder.
Ashley approaches Gabriel and smiles.
GABRIEL
It was OK? No one died?
ASHLEY
No one good.
GABRIEL
I knew it.
ASHLEY
You didn't need to worry, Gabe.
GABRIEL
I wasn't worried!
ANGLE: MADISON
She looks to Sam.
MADISON
You OK?
SAM
I let my guard down.
MADISON
But you're OK?
SAM
This time.
Quinn looks at his watch and heads to the door. Ashley steps up.
9.
ASHLEY
Hey, where you going? We should
celebrate. You know, Mayor livin' it
large, the Scorpions plan foiled. We
won.
QUINN
I've gotta be somewhere.
ASHLEY
(jealous)
You're going to see Paige.
QUINN
She finishes work soon. I said I'd
meet her, walk her home.
ASHLEY
Well aren't you the regular knight-in
-not-so-shining-armor.
QUINN
Back off, Ashley.
He heads out the door. Ashley closes it behind him and turns back to see
everyone looking at her.
ASHLEY
So... I'll be on the roof.
She exits the room, Gabriel following after her.
SAM
I'm gonna get some sleep. It's been
a rough day.
She leaves the room as well. Noah collapses on the sofa with an exhale. Madison
sits beside him.
MADISON
So did it really go all right?
NOAH
As well as expected.
MADISON
She seems strange.
NOAH
Sam? She's just pissed off. She prides
herself on being the best and this
time she got caught out.
10.
MADISON
Nobody can be the best all the time.
NOAH
She gave that guy a pummeling. I
don't know what would of happened if
I hadn't pulled her off him.
MADISON
She wouldn't of killed him. We don't
kill people.
NOAH
It's kill or be killed. I know what
I would choose.
He rubs his arm, revealing a small wound.
MADISON
That looks deep, we should probably
put something on it.
NOAH
No, it's not deep. It's cool.
MADISON
Just a bandage -
NOAH
Maddi, it's fine!
MADISON
(annoyed)
No it's not fine. You're bleeding.
Just let me help you.
He nods as she reaches into the trunk and pulls out a bandage. She takes his
knife and cuts it.
MADISON (CONT'D)
I should have been there. I'm such
a coward, staying behind. You needed
me.
NOAH
I always need you but you can't always
be there, you know that.
MADISON
We're suppose to be a team. Something
big comes up like saving the Mayor and
I back out.
11.
NOAH
You didn't back out. You opted out
of a street fight. You didn't wanna
get hurt.
MADISON
I don't want you to get hurt either.
You do all this stuff. Every time we
do something you're always there, like
you need to fight. One of these days...
I keep seeing in my mind someone
telling me that you're dead, died
fighting.
(beat)
I don't wanna lose you like that. I
don't wanna live without you here.
NOAH
If you want me to stay here next time
then I will. You come first. But I want
to be there... if anything happened to
the others while I was here, I just
couldn't forgive myself.
She finishes wrapping the bandage and secures it with a safety pin. She holds
his hand.
MADISON
And I don't want to be away from you
if anything happened.
Noah softly kisses her on the lips.
NOAH
Nothing's gonna happen. Not as long
as I've got you. You hear me?
MADISON
Yeah.
They kiss again as Sam enters.
SAM
Sorry. My ice pack isn't so much an
ice pack anymore.
She goes to the fridge as Madison and Noah stand.
NOAH
We're gonna go outside.
SAM
Right.
12.
MADISON
Are you OK?
SAM
Stop asking.
MADISON
Sorry.
She and Noah exit the warehouse. Sam takes another ice pack and locks the door
behind them. She leans against it for a moment, applying pressure to her
bruises. We can see she is troubled by what happened earlier. She let herself
loose and she wasn't sure if she could of stopped herself from crossing over
that line.
CUT TO:
EXT. OUTCASTS WAREHOUSE ROOF
Ashley is standing on the rooftop, looking over the city. Gabriel walks up the
stairway and walks closer to his sister. He stands beside her, looking at the
horizon.
GABRIEL
It'll soon be dark.
ASHLEY
I guess.
GABRIEL
You want me to get you a drink?
ASHLEY
That's what I should be asking you.
GABRIEL
It's OK.
ASHLEY
I know I haven't been around lately,
not been a good guardian to you -
GABRIEL
Don't.
ASHLEY
Don't what?
GABRIEL
You don't need to be here twenty-four-
seven to be a good sister. Just knowing
you love me and you're here for me is
enough.
13.
She looks out to the city.
ASHLEY
It looks so peaceful. So nice.
GABRIEL
It is.
ASHLEY
To them it is. But to us, we know
different. It's not all roses and cows
in the fields, birds in the sky and
cuddles round the fire, there's hate
and war. Every day is like a conflict,
just getting through it. We shouldn't
have to fight to survive, that's not
the life we chose.
GABRIEL
You always tell me we play the hand
we're dealt... or something like that.
ASHLEY
I say a lot of things, don't mean I
believe it.
GABRIEL
You've always been so strong. You've
never once cried through any of this.
ASHLEY
Oh I've cried. I've cried rivers.
(beat)
I cried every night when Mum and Dad
died. I used to just break down, I felt
like the only one I had was you and you
were so young. I didn't let you see
because you needed someone to be strong,
I had to be strong for you.
(beat)
I didn't know what to do. I was just ten
years old. They wanted to take us into
care but I knew if I let them take
control then I would lose you, I couldn't
let that happen. We were family and had
to stick together. So I ran...
(long beat)
We were on our own for a couple of years,
stealing from people, begging for clothes.
Then Quinn came along, same age, same
predicament. We banded together and soon
we had Noah and Sam, then Maddi. We were
a team, just the six of us.
14.
She walks to the edge of the roof, looking down at the moving traffic. She runs
her fingers through her hair.
ASHLEY (CONT'D)
(bitterly)
Now he has Paige. She has a family, a
job, she's nothing like the life we've
all had. I should of known it wouldn't
last, nothing ever does, not really.
GABRIEL
We have. Me and you. We're still
together. It's what you wanted, right?
ASHLEY
(smiles)
When Mum was in hospital she told me
that one day she wouldn't be around.
I didn't believe her, I was naοve,
couldn't imagine a world without her.
Dad had already gone so it was just
the three of us. I still didn't believe
he was dead. I kept expecting him to
come through that door at five o'clock.
I even thought that maybe they had had
a row and he'd left her and her telling
me he was dead was just her way of
saying he'd gone.
(beat)
As time went on I realised he was never
coming home. He was dead and buried and
there was nothing I could do to change
that. Then one day my teacher at school
told me the tumor Mum had been suffering
from had killed her. I remember it.
Exactly eleven A.M, tuesday the fifteenth
of July. It wasn't hard to believe that
she had gone. After I came to terms with
Dad dying I just figured the world was
out to screw me... us.
(beat)
Still hurt though, being told that the
woman who had been there our whole lives
was now dead... it hurt bad.
She turns to Gabriel.
ASHLEY (CONT'D)
I would of died if I didn't have you.
GABRIEL
It doesn't make you weak, telling me
this. You're still Ashley Sinclair, the
(more)
15.
GABRIEL (CONT'D)
Outcast Gang member. My sister.
ASHLEY
I wanted so much more for you.
GABRIEL
I have everything I need right here.
I've got my family.
She hugs him but he back away with a smile.
GABRIEL (CONT'D)
Hey, enough of the hugs. I've got my
reputation to think of.
ASHLEY
And just who's gonna see you up here?
Gabriel nods to the block of apartments across the street. Ashley spots an old
woman staring right at them.
ASHLEY (CONT'D)
Oh I'm sure she's just itching to
ruin your street cred.
Gabriel walks towards the staircase but Ashley stops him, pulling something out
of her pocket. She opens her hand to reveal a ring.
GABRIEL
What's that?
ASHLEY
Well it's a ring.
GABRIEL
(duh!)
And?
ASHLEY
It was Dad's.
GABRIEL
Oh.
ASHLEY
It was recovered from the crash, the
only thing they could find intact.
(beat)
I want you to have it.
GABRIEL
Really?
16.
ASHLEY
You're his son.
Gabriel takes it and puts it on his finger.
GABRIEL
It fits.
ASHLEY
Of course.
GABRIEL
Thanks. Not just for this but...
you know.
ASHLEY
Yeah.
CUT TO:
EXT. LIBERTY STREETS
Quinn and PAIGE FIELDING are walking.
PAIGE
I've been thinking about you.
QUINN
Me too... about you, not me.
PAIGE
I thought you were going to call me.
QUINN
I was but things got hectic.
PAIGE
I was scared. I didn't know what to
think. I heard on the radio that a gang
war had broken out in the market place
and the Mayor had been shot at and when
you didn't call me... I was scared.
QUINN
You know me. I'm a survivor. It's nice
that you worry but you really don't need
to.
PAIGE
I don't like it.
QUINN
You don't like what?
17.
PAIGE
You. Being in your gang. It's dangerous.
QUINN
I know but you knew that when you got
into this relationship five months ago.
PAIGE
I don't want to wake up one day and find
you're not there anymore.
QUINN
It's what I have to do. It's what I've
done my whole life.
PAIGE
But you don't have to, not now. My Father
could give you a job and you could rent
your own apartment. You could get a life
again.
QUINN
I don't need your Fathers hand-outs. I've
been on the streets since I was born and
I've come out just fine.
PAIGE
I'm trying to help you, Quinn.
QUINN
Thanks but I don't need it.
PAIGE
Fine. I don't know why I bother.
She starts off but he takes her arm.
QUINN
It's not that I don't love you. I do. I
never thought I could love someone so
different from me but look at us. We're
together.
PAIGE
I know and it's great. You're the first
guy I've ever connected with like this.
(beat)
I'm sorry, I shouldn't try to change you
and I don't want to. I love everything
about you, even your leadership in the
gang. I even love your friends... most of
them anyway.
18.
QUINN
Yeah, about Ashley -
PAIGE
I know, I know. It takes time for her to
let anyone new in. You've sung me that
tune a thousand times.
QUINN
Paige, she just has trouble trusting
people is all. Like all of us.
PAIGE
You trust me.
QUINN
And it took a long time getting there.
PAIGE
You do trust me though, right?
QUINN
Of course.
PAIGE
Good, because I trust you with my life.
Which comes in handy what with you always
having a gun with you.
They smiles and kiss as people look on.
CUT TO:
INT. OUTCASTS WAREHOUSE FRONT AREA
Sam is sitting on the sofa, staring at the blank TV screen. She looks to see
Ashley enter.
ASHLEY
Hey.
Sam forces a smile.
ASHLEY (CONT'D)
You OK?
SAM
Why does everyone keep asking me that?
I mean really, you'd think there would
be a restriction.
ASHLEY
Yeah... earlier today, in the market
place...
19.
SAM
OK, stop. Don't even go there, I know
everyone's been itching to have a big
heart to heart but you know, I just want
to carry on with what I'm doing.
ASHLEY
Yeah. How's that staring into nothingness
working out for ya?
SAM
I'm OK, Ashley. Seriously. It nearly got
out of hand but it didn't.
ASHLEY
Yeah, cos Noah stopped you. Sam -
KNOCK! Ashley pulls out her gun as she approaches the door. She looks through
the spy hole and sees who it is. She opens the door to reveal Noah and Madison.
Noah hands Ashley a letter.
ASHLEY (CONT'D)
What's this?
NOAH
We found it pinned against the door on
our way back.
SAM
What does it say?
ASHLEY
(reading)
It's about the Latin Scorpions. They have
a transport of children which is coming
from Isingter and will cross through
Liberty tomorrow night.
SAM
What are the kids for?
ASHLEY
Oh... God.
NOAH
We need to get Quinn, get a plan together.
MADISON
I think he's at Paige's.
ASHLEY
Phone her house, we need him here.
20.
MADISON
OK.
SAM
(shouts)
What are the kids for? Why are they
transporting them?
ASHLEY
They're transporting them because...
they are gonna sell them as slaves.
On Sam's sickened face we...
BLACK OUT.
END OF ACT ONE
21.
ACT TWO
FADE IN.
INT. LIBERTY STREETS NIGHT
Darkness has fallen. Sam is walking with Paige, looking around at the emptiness
of the city. It's completely different from the daytime.
PAIGE
You didn't have to walk me home. I've
lived here my whole life and I've never
been attacked before.
SAM
Yeah but it gives me an excuse to get
out of the warehouse.
PAIGE
Are you -
SAM
Don't ask me if I'm OK cos I swear I'll
do something that's not OK.
(beat)
Sorry. It's just, being in that place
all the time is a little suffocating
sometimes. I mean, it's home, I love it.
But there are times I just need to get
out of there and breathe, you know?
PAIGE
I know. My family's like that. They
never give me my own space. Although,
I guess I should feel lucky. After I
met you guys I kinda stopped taking them
for granted, spent more time with them.
SAM
It must be nice.
PAIGE
It is. What happened to your family?
Silence.
PAIGE (CONT'D)
I'm sorry, that was rude. I shouldn't
ask things like that. It's cos I'm blond.
SAM
I never knew my Dad, he was gone before
I was born. And my Mum...
22.
She looks at the moon.
SAM (CONT'D)
... my Mum was a junkie. She did a lot
of drugs and was messed up. My sister
ran away and left me with her. Social
Services came and found my Mum unfit
to be a parent, so I was taken into
foster care. I never saw her again, the
last I heard was that she got a plane
back to England.
PAIGE
Sam, I'm so sorry.
SAM
I'm not telling you cos I want sympathy.
And I'm not the only one with a crap
childhood.
PAIGE
What happened to your sister?
SAM
Max? I tried to track her down a few
years back and found nothing. For all I
know she could be dead and I really
couldn't care less.
(off her look)
She left me when I needed her the most.
If she came into my life right now I'd
probably welcome her with a big kick in
the ribs.
PAIGE
I'm sorry things weren't better for you.
SAM
Thanks. I'm glad things were good for
you.
Paige smiles and comes to a stop outside a house. She looks up at it.
PAIGE
Well here I am. Thanks for walking me.
SAM
Anytime.
PAIGE
Do you wanna come in? It's slightly less
suffocating.
23.
SAM
Me and normal homes really don't go well.
Maybe some other day though.
PAIGE
Right. Thanks again.
Sam nods as Paige enters her home. Taking a deep breath she turns around and
walks down the street until she notices someone behind her. She swiftly turns,
pulling out her gun, and sees -
ANTON CAMEROS
Looking quite the part as the Latin Scorpions gang leader. He inhales the smoke
from his cigarette and smiles.
SAM
Anton.
ANTON
Sam. Long time no see.
SAM
Yeah. It's a shame you had to spoil it.
ANTON
You wanna grab a coffee?
She puts her gun away and shakes her head.
SAM
What are you doing in Liberty? You could
be killed. You should be killed for what
you planned to do earlier.
ANTON
The Mayor's weak. If the Scorpions are
to take the city then he needs to be
eliminated.
SAM
So that's the master plan, to take our
city? C'mon, you really think we're gonna
let that happen?
ANTON
You have no idea of my connections.
SAM
Still with the big talk, huh? Nothing
changes with you, Anton.
ANTON
Oh I don't know, got myself a new bint.
24.
SAM
(angered)
Get out of this city.
ANTON
Can't do that. We've got something
going at the moment.
SAM
Yeah, the kids.
ANTON
I don't know what you're talking about.
Sam rolls her eyes.
SAM
Let's get that coffee.
ANTON
Let's.
CUT TO:
INT. OUTCASTS WAREHOUSE FRONT AREA
Quinn, Ashley, Madison, and Gabriel are sitting on the sofa, with the letter on
the table.
MADISON
So... the plan... what's the plan?
QUINN
Simple. We intercept the transport
before it reaches the Scorpions.
MADISON
Yeah... that sounds like a great suicide
mission. They won't give the kids up
just like that and they have more men
on their side. We'd be outnumbered.
QUINN
Then we've gotta get them before they
are loaded into the transport.
ASHLEY
So we're going to Isingter?
QUINN
We are.
MADISON
OK, still not liking this plan.
25.
GABRIEL
Me neither. Not everyone can go, right?
People need to stay here to make sure
the Scorpions are their side of the
border, and going by today, I'm guessing
they're kinda not.
QUINN
Not everyone's going. It's doesn't need
the whole team. Isingter is the biggest
city on the island with the biggest and
most powerful gangs.
(beat)
If the Syndicate were to notice us...
it's better if there's just a couple.
ASHLEY
We'll go. Me and Quinn.
MADISON
What?
GABRIEL
Are you insane?
ASHLEY
You know me and Quinn can pull it off.
It's something we have to do.
QUINN
It's settled then. We'll have to leave
early tomorrow.
He exits the room.
GABRIEL
I can't believe you're leaving.
ASHLEY
I'm not leaving for good, Gabe.
GABRIEL
The only reason you're doing this is
cos you have this big yen for Quinn.
MADISON
O-K, I should be... away... from here.
She quickly hurries out of the room.
ASHLEY
Gabriel, this is not because of him.
God, he has a girlfriend. I'm not trying
to weasel my way in. It's for the kids.
26.
GABRIEL
Don't give me that crap!
ASHLEY
This is not up for discussion, Gabe.
GABRIEL
But we don't even know where the tip
off came from. For all you know it
could be a trap set by the Scorpions.
ASHLEY
Which is why me and Quinn are better
suited to go.
GABRIEL
But -
ASHLEY
Just drop it, Gabe. Please.
GABRIEL
You're right. You and Quinn are better
suited. You both have a death wish.
He looks her in the eyes for a while, then exits, slamming the door on his way
out. Ashley stares at the front door for a moment then turns to the other door
and sees -
QUINN
Her eyes widen.
ASHLEY
Thought you went upstairs.
QUINN
I came back down.
ASHLEY
How long you been there?
QUINN
A while... not long.
She backs away.
QUINN (CONT'D)
You sure you wanna come?
ASHLEY
No choice in the matter. Noah needs to
stay here with the others. Sam isn't
(more)
27.
ASHLEY (CONT'D)
really... something's going on with her.
(beat)
And that leaves Gabriel.
QUINN
Right. You should get some things
together. When Sam gets back we'll let
her know the plan.
ASHLEY
OK.
She heads for the door but stops.
ASHLEY (CONT'D)
This thing with Paige.
QUINN
Yeah?
ASHLEY
You love her?
QUINN
(hesitates)
I do.
ASHLEY
Good... that's good.
She exits.
CUT TO:
INT. OUTCASTS WAREHOUSE NOAH'S ROOM
The room is much like the rest of the place, except there's more lamps and
lights. Noah is sitting on the windowsill. Madison enters.
MADISON
Hey.
NOAH
Hey.
MADISON
You missed the meeting.
NOAH
I could hear it.
28.
MADISON
You know the plan then?
NOAH
Yeah. Quinn and Ashley get all the fun
while we stay and baby-sit the kid.
MADISON
I could make it worth your while.
NOAH
(grins)
I bet you could.
She sits beside him, holding his hands.
MADISON
I think I'm ready.
NOAH
For real?
MADISON
For real.
They move closer to each other and kiss. Madison slowly pulls his top off over
his head and they fall to the bed.
SMASH CUT TO:
EXT. LIBERTY STREETS
Gabriel walking through the cleared streets.
GABRIEL
(mumbles)
I can't believe this. She thinks she can
overrule me cos she's older and better...
and more significant...
(beat)
I'd so badly kick the Scorpion's asses.
He stops, seeing something in the distance. We too can see it, two people.
ANGLE: SAM AND ANTON
They are standing outside a small cafe.
ANTON
So here we are.
29.
SAM
Yeah. Here we are and you've still not
told me anything about the kids.
ANTON
I'm not going to either. You know me
better than that. We're not on the same
side anymore, Sam.
SAM
What have you turned into?
ANTON
A man with power.
SAM
You may have power but you're still the
same boy I knew. Insecure and hating
the world. You're still him, no matter
how you appear to of changed.
She begins to walk away.
ANTON
What, no kiss goodbye?
She stops.
SAM
No, Anton. Not this time.
ANTON
If you need me I'll be in the Motel on
Sanfield Street.
She continues, leaving him standing alone.
ANGLE: GABRIEL
Seeing all this he turns back but bumps into someone. A HOMELESS MAN.
GABRIEL
Whoa!
He tries to step aside but the man moves in his way.
GABRIEL (CONT'D)
What are you doing, freak?
He pushes him out of the way and walks but is hit from behind. He falls to the
ground as the Homeless Man pulls the ring off his finger. Gabriel jumps to his
feet but he has run away.
30.
GABRIEL (CONT'D)
(shouts)
Hey! Get back here!
SAM
What's going on?
Gabriel turns to see Sam.
GABRIEL
Uh... that guy... he just took my ring.
SAM
What are you doing out here, Gabe?
GABRIEL
I just... nothing.
SAM
Let's get back.
He nods.
CUT TO:
INT. OUTCASTS WAREHOUSE NOAH'S ROOM DAY
The sun shines through the window. The camera moves to the bed where we see the
ruffled sheets and two bodies lying in it. Noah has his arm wrapped around
Madison.
There's a knock at the door and then it opens to reveal Ashley. She looks at
them.
ASHLEY
Guys.
NOAH
(waking)
Yeah?
ASHLEY
Downstairs.
She closes the door behind her. Noah gently shakes Madison as she stirs.
MADISON
What?
NOAH
We gotta get up.
31.
MADISON
Do we have to?
Noah kisses her on her cheek.
NOAH
Come on.
He gets out of bed and slips on his trousers. He turns back to see Madison
leaning up.
MADISON
Was I... was it OK? I mean, me and
you, together. Was it...
NOAH
It was everything I thought it would
be.
MADISON
That's a good?
NOAH
Oh that's a good!
MADISON
Cos you were great. I mean, wow! I know
you've done it before but wow!
NOAH
But you're the first one I've ever loved.
The first time this actually meant
something. It was like my first time all
over again... only better.
MADISON
You mean that?
NOAH
I do.
She smiles blissfully.
INT. OUTCASTS WAREHOUSE FRONT AREA
Two rucksacks are at the door. Quinn, Sam, and Gabriel are all standing around
near the counter. Ashley comes through the door.
ASHLEY
They're coming down.
QUINN
Good.
32.
QUINN (CONT'D)
(to Sam)
You guys gonna be OK?
SAM
I'm sure we'll survive.
QUINN
Not what I meant.
SAM
We'll be fine.
GABRIEL
Yeah. They got me looking out of them.
Noah and Madison come down the stairs.
NOAH
If you were in charge, boy, we'd all be
dead by now.
Madison takes a seat on the sofa. Noah approaches Quinn.
NOAH (CONT'D)
Be safe, man.
QUINN
We'll be coming back. You know that.
NOAH
Yeah, I know that.
They shake hands as Ashley steps closer to Gabriel.
ASHLEY
Listen to these guys, OK?
GABRIEL
Hello. Fourteen years old, I can take
care of myself.
ASHLEY
Just don't go scrapping with gangs.
She looks down, noticing his hand.
ASHLEY (CONT'D)
Where's the ring?
GABRIEL
Uh... I...
33.
SAM
It's upstairs... he didn't wanna lose
it. It's safe.
ASHLEY
Oh.
(beat)
Take care of my brother.
SAM
I'll only let him bring home older
prostitutes.
ASHLEY
(smiles)
That's what I like to hear.
She and Quinn step back, looking at the gang.
QUINN
Let's go.
ASHLEY
OK.
MADISON
Wait. What happens if... you know. You
don't come back.
QUINN
If you don't hear from us by this
afternoon then come up with a plan to
save the children.
MADISON
I didn't mean that. What happens to us?
He takes a moment. Everyone feeling uncomfortable.
QUINN
You fight. We all deserve to live and
sometimes we have to fight to live. Noah
will take charge. You down with that?
NOAH
I'm down with that.
GABRIEL
Nothing's gonna happen though. You'll be
all right.
ASHLEY
We will.
34.
QUINN
We'll meet at the clock tower. The kids
will need to be taken somewhere safe and
you'll need to be ready with another
vehicle, just in case we're followed.
NOAH
I'll get it sorted.
QUINN
That's it then. If all goes to plan we'll
be back later. If not... it's been nice
knowing you all.
He smiles and heads out the front door. Ashley takes a lasting look at Gabriel,
then follows. Sam locks the door behind them.
SAM
(sarcastically)
Uh. I thought they would never leave!
MADISON
We need to get everything ready.
NOAH
I've got a friend in the car trade, he
owes me a favor. I think it's about
time I pulled it in.
He walks out of the room.
SAM
(to Madison)
You'll be all right if I go out?
MADISON
What? We should be planning every move,
make sure we don't slip up. There is a
diagram I made that shows everything we
need to do and...
(off her look)
I like to indulge in the planning.
SAM
I won't be long.
She grabs her jacket.
GABRIEL
Seeing anyone special?
She turns to see him, wondering if he had seen anything the previous night.
35.
INT. BLACK VAN
Quinn is driving the large van. Ashley is in the passenger seat, looking ahead
at the road.
ASHLEY
They'll be all right.
QUINN
I know.
ASHLEY
I meant. If we don't come back. They'll
be OK.
QUINN
We're gonna be coming back.
He turns the wheel.
ASHLEY
This isn't the way, Quinn.
QUINN
Just a quick stop.
He slams on the brakes as it comes clear why he's stopping. Paige is waiting on
the side of the street. He winds down the window and smiles. Ashley looks the
other way. Paige notices.
QUINN (CONT'D)
I had to see you. Before I went.
PAIGE
(tearful)
Please, be careful.
QUINN
I will. I'll phone you.
PAIGE
I love you so much.
ASHLEY
(grumbles)
Oh God!
QUINN
Goodbye.
PAIGE
Bye, baby.
Quinn pulls the van away, winding up the window.
36.
QUINN
(to Ashley)
You didn't have to be so rude.
ASHLEY
I was rude?
QUINN
I don't know why you ride her so much.
ASHLEY
I'm not the one who's riding her. You
are, remember?
He rolls his eyes. They sit in silence for a moment until Ashley reaches forward
and switches on the radio. SARAH MCLACHLAN "ADIA" comes on.
QUINN
It's an old one.
ASHLEY
They're the best ones.
She stares at him. He realises, turning to look at her as well, the words of the
song sounding in their minds. Ashley looks away, trying not to complicate
things. Quinn stays locked on her for a while longer.
FADE TO:
INT. MOTEL ANTON'S ROOM
The music continues to play through the scene. There's a knock at the door.
Anton opens it and there stands Sam. She walks in without being invited. He
closes the door behind her and turns.
She just stands for a moment, her hands in her pockets, her eyes trying to
search for something within him.
FADE TO:
INT. OUTCASTS WAREHOUSE FRONT AREA
The music continues as the camera moves to fit Madison and Noah in frame. They
are sitting on the sofa, staring ahead of them at nothing in particular.
The music moves into the background.
NOAH
This life we have, on this island, hidden
away from the world. I don't think I would
have lasted this long without you.
37.
MADISON
Are you getting emotional, Noah?
NOAH
No. It's just... I want you to know.
MADISON
Just in case things go wrong?
NOAH
No. I just want you to know.
She smiles and warms up to him. He wraps his arm around her and rests his head
on hers.
FADE TO:
INT. OUTCASTS WAREHOUSE GABRIEL'S ROOM
The picture of Noah and Madison disappears as we see Gabriel sitting on his
windowsill, staring out at the city. There's a look of worry on his face, a
worry that maybe his sister won't come home. He sighs, getting on his feet and
walking through the door.
FADE TO:
INT. MOTEL ANTON'S ROOM
As before.
ANTON
I didn't think you'd come.
SAM
I didn't want to.
ANTON
But you did.
SAM
They'd hate me if they knew I was here.
You're the enemy.
ANTON
We were once fighting for the same things.
Whatever happened to those days?
SAM
They're gone. They were gone the day you
killed Rico.
ANTON
It was an accident. I never meant to kill
him. He was the leader.
38.
SAM
I'm not a fool. I know why you killed
him. You wanted it all. Respect, power,
me. That's why you killed him.
ANTON
I didn't hear you complaining before.
Sam moves closer to him and grabs him by the shirt, locking her lips with his.
We sense that Sam is feeling something deeper, that there have been things in
her life that hurt her so much today. That's why she's with a killer to punish
herself. As Anton pins her against the wall the background music gains volume.
FADE TO:
INT. BLACK VAN - NIGHT
Quinn is still driving but the day has grown darker. Ashley is trying not to
look at him. The van comes to a stop at a bus station. The music stops
completely as two armed guards approach the van.
Quinn and Ashley grab their guns.
QUINN
Here we go.
BLACK OUT.
END OF ACT TWO
39.
ACT THREE
FADE IN.
EXT. ISINGTER BUS STATION NIGHT
Quinn and Ashley have stepped out of the black van and have their guns hidden
behind their backs. As the two armed guards approach, Quinn kicks one and grabs
his weapon.
Ashley rolls on the ground as the other guard attempts to hit her. She then
takes out his legs and steals his gun. She whacks him across the face with it.
Quinn grabs the first guard and slams him against the side of the van.
GUARD #1
What do you want?
QUINN
A few million pounds, a house in Hawaii,
a beautiful parade held in my honor but
more to the point, I want to know what
you know.
GUARD #1
I don't know anything.
QUINN
Then I guess we'll just have to kill
you then, huh?
He pushes the gun to the guard's head.
GUARD #1
Wait, wait!
QUINN
Not so dumb after all.
GUARD #1
What do you need to know?
ASHLEY
Where's the kids?
GUARD #1
I don't know anything about kids.
Quinn waves the gun.
40.
ASHLEY
I wouldn't test him. He's recently crazy.
I mean, he's dating the Queen of Slut
Town.
Quinn shoots her a look.
ASHLEY (CONT'D)
(off his look)
Also known as Paige.
QUINN
(to guard)
Just tell us what we need to know and
we'll be on our way.
GUARD #1
OK, OK, just ease off.
Quinn backs off but as he does the guard pulls out a weapon. He presses it
against Quinn, releasing an electric charge through his body. Ashley tries to
pull out her gun but he pushes past her and makes a run for it.
Quinn jumps up but is too late.
QUINN
Damnit!
ASHLEY
He's pretty fast for a fat guy.
Quinn looks around, covering the burn wound on his chest. Ashley notices this.
ASHLEY (CONT'D)
We should get that seen to.
QUINN
When we've finished here.
ASHLEY
How are we gonna find them? The letter
didn't exactly have a map.
They look around and see the station lights are still on. Quinn nods.
QUINN
I thought the buses had stopped for the
day.
ASHLEY
Guess not.
41.
QUINN
All this over kids. Who'd have 'em?
ASHLEY
It's not the kids I'd want. It's the
making them that's the fun.
They both smile as they head for the station.
CUT TO:
INT. MOTEL ANTON'S ROOM
Sam and Anton are making with the smoochies on the double bed. He is on top.
SAM
No... Anton... no, get off me.
ANTON
What?
SAM
I said get off me!
She pushes him off and rolls off the bed. He looks at her like she's crazy.
ANTON
What the Hell is going on?
SAM
I can't do this, not with you.
ANTON
You don't want me?
SAM
I could never... we've both changed
since the old days.
ANTON
Yeah. You're more of a freak now then
you was back then.
SAM
At least I'm not a killer.
ANTON
Not yet.
She grabs her jacket.
42.
SAM
What's that supposed to mean?
ANTON
I know who you are, Sam. The real you.
I know what you're capable of.
SAM
If that's true then you'd better get
out of my city.
ANTON
Not just yet.
SAM
Oh I forgot. You have some kids to sell.
ANTON
I'm suddenly wondering how you know so
much about my business dealings.
SAM
You know we're going to stop it.
ANTON
You'll try.
SAM
You could stop it. Right now. Use your
phone and tell whoever it is that
they're not for sale. They're just kids.
ANTON
No can do, Sam. It's out of my hands now.
SAM
Earlier today I said you were the same
boy I knew. I was wrong. You're not a
boy, you're not a man, you're a monster.
ANTON
Better to be a monster than nothing at
all.
(beat)
I'll be gone by tomorrow.
SAM
If you're not, I'll kill you myself.
She exits, slamming the door. Anton watches her leave, then falls back on the
bed. He takes out his cell phone and dials a number. He waits a moment.
43.
ANTON
It's Anton. Everything is ready.
CUT TO:
INT. OUTCASTS WAREHOUSE FRONT AREA
Madison and Gabriel are sitting on the sofa.
GABRIEL
Ashley told me about my Mum and Dad,
how she died and everything.
MADISON
Oh, honey.
GABRIEL
No, I don't mean... it just made me
think. What would I do if I were her?
She had so much to deal with and she
was just ten years old. I'm fourteen
and I couldn't imagine having that
much responsibility. I don't think I
could deal with that.
MADISON
You could. If you had friends around
you, like us.
GABRIEL
I've been so... I never really thought
about how it affected her. She must of
felt so alone.
MADISON
Ashley's strong. Stronger than anyone
I know. She's been through more than
anyone deserves and she's come out on
top.
(beat)
She's so proud of who you are.
GABRIEL
Thanks.
Noah and Paige enter.
MADISON
Paige? What are you doing here?
NOAH
I can't find Sam anywhere. I've left a
message on her cell but we need to leave
now.
44.
MADISON
And yet, still wondering why Paige is
here.
NOAH
I can't go alone. You're coming with me.
MADISON
What? No. Me? No. Take Paige, she's much
more... fashionable and besides, I'm
the brains remember? I do the planning.
NOAH
Maddi, we do it together, right?
She takes a deep breath and stands up, taking his hand. Paige sits with Gabriel.
PAIGE
I guess we'll be watching TV.
GABRIEL
Fun.
NOAH
Take care of him, Paige.
PAIGE
Yes, sir!
Noah and Madison exit. Paige looks to Gabriel with a slight smile, then to the
TV.
PAIGE (CONT'D)
Anything good on?
GABRIEL
Nah.
PAIGE
Must be hard for you staying here while
they're all out there kicking ass.
GABRIEL
It is. They all treat me like a kid.
PAIGE
I think that's because you are.
GABRIEL
I'm fourteen and apart of this gang!
Paige backs off.
45.
PAIGE
Not really. I mean, you're more like
a cling-on. Not apart of it, but they
still keep you around.
(stops)
Oh sorry, sometimes I speak and words
come out, and that's a bad thing.
GABRIEL
It's OK, it's true I guess.
PAIGE
No, not true. It's...
Sam rushes in.
SAM
Have they gone?
PAIGE
Oh thank God you're here.
SAM
Have they gone?
GABRIEL
Yeah, they left a message on your cell.
Sam checks her pockets and realises she must of left it in the motel.
SAM
I've gotta meet them there.
PAIGE
You can't stay?
SAM
They need me.
Sam exits. Paige turns back to Gabriel and beams an awkward smile at him.
CUT TO:
INT. ISINGTER BUS STATION
Two Scorpion gang members are standing inside, with ten kids sitting in the
corner of the room. They are watching their kidnappers carefully.
Suddenly the door bursts open but no one's there. The two men pull out their
machine guns and take aim. But there's nothing.
46.
CRASH! Something flies through the window. The two men turn to see a brick fall
on the ground. They turn back but are greeted by punches from both Quinn and
Ashley.
Quinn takes on his guy, flipping him over his shoulder, breaking his arm, and
then throwing him against the wall. He pulls out his gun, ready to shoot, but
the man is unconscious.
Ashley is hit by the other man. She falls back against the wall but dodges his
next punch. She takes his arm and elbows him in the ribs. He bends down as she
brings up her knee, colliding it with his face. He falls to the ground.
ANGLE: QUINN
Sees her.
ASHLEY
What?
QUINN
I just never noticed how...
He looks to the kids.
QUINN (CONT'D)
We're here to help you.
ASHLEY
You need to come with us. We'll get you
to safety.
The children are reluctant to leave.
QUINN
If you stay here you will be hurt.
One by one the kids stand and approach with caution. Ashley takes a few of their
hands.
ASHLEY
To the Batmobile!
BOY #1
You have a Batmobile?
ASHLEY
Well... it's black.
QUINN
Ashley.
ASHLEY
What is it?
47.
QUINN
Where are the other guards?
ASHLEY
What?
QUINN
An operation like this. You'd think they
would have more guards.
ASHLEY
Maybe we got lucky.
QUINN
Or maybe they're not interested in the
kids at all.
As he says this someone comes into view. He is THE POSTMAN. An older guy, around
twenty-nine years old. He looks to them in a worried gaze.
Ashley aims her gun.
ASHLEY
Who are you?
THE POSTMAN
I'm the guy who delivered the letter,
the one about all this.
QUINN
So what are you doing in Isingter?
THE POSTMAN
To warn you... it's a trap. They made
me deliver it. I overheard what they
were saying... something about payback.
QUINN
Who?
THE POSTMAN
He said he'd kill my little girl if I
said anything but... I couldn't live
with it.
QUINN
Who are you talking about?
THE POSTMAN
(fearful)
The Latin Scorpions... they want to even
the score after what happened with the
Mayor.
48.
QUINN
What are they going to do?
THE POSTMAN
They set all this up so no one would
be there to protect him.
QUINN
Who?
He doesn't have to answer.
ASHLEY
Gabe...
On her shocked face we...
BLACK OUT.
END OF ACT THREE
49.
ACT FOUR
FADE IN.
INT. OUTCASTS WAREHOUSE FRONT AREA NIGHT
Paige and Gabriel are still on the sofa, playing "CONNECT FOUR". The TV is on.
PAIGE
So how come a gangster like you has
Connect Four?
Gabriel smiles.
GABRIEL
Ashley got it for my ninth birthday.
PAIGE
Oh. You mean she stole it?
GABRIEL
No. She paid for it. She always pays
for my presents.
(beat)
I wish I could pay for hers, you know?
PAIGE
Gabe, if you ever need anything...
GABRIEL
I've always been told not to accept
things from other people... people
like you.
PAIGE
People like me?
GABRIEL
Ashley calls you spoilt.
PAIGE
And what do you think?
GABRIEL
I think you're lucky.
(beat)
I'm not... I like my life, it's better
than it could be, and I'm not jealous
of you. I think everyone is born into
this world with a purpose and a destiny.
PAIGE
And what's your destiny?
50.
GABRIEL
I haven't figured that one out yet.
PAIGE
You will.
We soon see shadows passing from the window behind them. Paige and Gabriel fail
to see them.
CUT TO:
INT. ISINGTER BUS STATION
Ashley has pinned The Postman against the wall. Quinn holds the kids back.
ASHLEY
Do you know what you've done?
THE POSTMAN
I'm... I'm so sorry...
ASHLEY
If my brother is hurt I will hunt you
down and rip off every single limb from
your body, starting with your ears.
Quinn takes out his cell and dials. He waits for a moment but there's no answer.
He turns back to Ashley.
QUINN
We've gotta go.
Ashley backs away and starts towards the door.
THE POSTMAN
Wait. I want to help.
ASHLEY
You want to help? After what you've
done?
QUINN
Get these kids on a bus and drive.
THE POSTMAN
Yes. Yes I will. Where should I go?
QUINN
Nowhere. Just keep driving. Keep them
away from the city central.
He throws him his cell phone.
51.
QUINN (CONT'D)
I'll call you.
THE POSTMAN
OK. I can do that.
QUINN
If you let down these kids -
THE POSTMAN
I won't. You have my word.
QUINN
Make sure of it.
THE POSTMAN
I am sorry. I hope the boy's OK.
Ashley sneers at him before she exits. Quinn quickly follows after her.
EXT. ISINGTER BUS STATION
Ashley and Quinn march outside.
QUINN
We're in central Isingter.
ASHLEY
Gee, I hadn't noticed!
QUINN
No matter how fast we drive we couldn't
make it back in time.
ASHLEY
Am I the only one here who has realised
my brother is in danger?
QUINN
We need to get hold of Noah and the
others. They can get there in time.
ASHLEY
Fine. You do that, I'm gonna drive.
QUINN
You don't know how to.
ASHLEY
You'll be surprised how fast I pick
these things up.
52.
She gets into the drivers seat of the black van and starts the engine. Quinn
quickly jumps in the passenger seat.
CUT TO:
INT. OUTCASTS WAREHOUSE FRONT AREA
Paige and Gabriel are still playing the game.
PAIGE
I can't believe this. You've beat me
like three times in a row. You said
you hadn't played in years.
GABRIEL
Well I haven't. I just pick things up
really fast.
PAIGE
So I see.
She looks at the clock.
GABRIEL
You waiting for something?
PAIGE
Quinn said he'd phone me.
GABRIEL
Yeah, they haven't called here either.
PAIGE
Should we be worried?
GABRIEL
I'm sure they're fine.
PAIGE
Yeah. Me too.
Gabriel takes a moment.
GABRIEL
If I told you something would you
promise not to tell anyone?
PAIGE
Sure, Gabe.
GABRIEL
I saw Sam with someone.
53.
PAIGE
A who someone? A guy someone?
GABRIEL
(nods)
And not of the good kind.
PAIGE
What do you mean, Gabriel?
GABRIEL
I shouldn't really...
PAIGE
What is it?
GABRIEL
I saw her coming out of the small cafe
with Anton.
PAIGE
Anton? "The Anton?"
(beat)
Who's "The Anton?"
GABRIEL
Anton Cameros. He's the head of the
Latin Scorpions, our only real nemesis.
He's the one who organised the Mayor's
would be assassination. He's the one
who has this big thing for taking over
our city.
PAIGE
(concerned)
What were he and Sam doing?
GABRIEL
Nothing. Not like you're thinking. They
were just talking.
PAIGE
That's not too bad then.
GABRIEL
Well yeah! I mean, we don't talk to
people we hate or people who would kill
us if they had the chance.
PAIGE
You think Sam might be... no, not Sam.
She would never betray you guys. She
loves you all.
54.
GABRIEL
But Sam's so secretive. She never really
tells anyone about her life. I mean, she
says about what happened in vague
sentences but never goes into detail.
PAIGE
Some people have trouble opening up.
GABRIEL
I guess. It's just, sometimes, I'm not
sure who to trust.
PAIGE
Sam's like your family and you can
always trust your family.
GABRIEL
Yeah. I know. Worried over nothing,
right?
PAIGE
Exactly. Nothing bad is going to happen.
CRASH! The door flies off its hinges as men from the Scorpions burst through the
warehouse. Paige and Gabriel jump in shock.
PAIGE (CONT'D)
(shouts)
RUN!
She pushes Gabriel towards the door and they both run through it. The men holds
their guns close and quickly pursue them.
SMASH CUT TO:
INT. BLACK VAN
Ashley has her foot pressed on the accelerator all the way. She's weaving in and
out of the cars ahead of her. Quinn looks to her, a little worried.
QUINN
Ashley...
ASHLEY
Tell me to slow down and I'll hit you.
QUINN
... we'll get there.
ASHLEY
If he dies... if they kill him then I
quit.
55.
QUINN
You quit?
ASHLEY
If anything happens to Gabriel I'm out
of the whole thing. I'll pack my things
and I'll leave.
QUINN
You'll leave us?
She nods.
QUINN (CONT'D)
I don't want you to go.
ASHLEY
Then you'd better hope we get there in
time.
QUINN
Ash -
She switches on the radio, cutting him out. It's another SARAH MCLACHLAN song,
"I LOVE YOU." Ashley turns to Quinn, despaired.
CUT TO:
EXT. OUTCASTS WAREHOUSE ROOF
The song continues as Gabriel and Paige rush up the stairway and onto the roof.
We're kinda moving into a slow motion sequence here. Gabriel pulls out his
knife, the moon's light reflecting off the blade.
We hear gun shots over the music. Paige grabs his arm and rushes to the side of
the building. It's a long way down, no way they would survive if they jumped.
She looks to the stairway, seeing shadows bounce off the wall. It dawns on her
there's no way out.
Gabriel takes her hand, each finger crossed with hers. His eyes look up to her,
hers down on him. Then back to the stairway as they wait.
FADE TO:
EXT. LIBERTY CLOCK TOWER
A car is parked on the side of the road. Noah, Madison, and Sam are waiting
around. Of course, they are oblivious to everything that's going on.
Noah looks up at the clock face, then back to Madison and Sam. He slowly shakes
his head, as if letting them know that Quinn and
56.
Ashley haven't made it.
Madison wraps her arms around him, a tear falling from her right eye. He too can
feel the hurt, the pain of losing people close to him.
Sam stands alone. Her arms cross along her body, the stance she always takes
when she's feeling lost. She stares into the darkness of the night, feeling as
she always feels, alone.
Suddenly the black van hastily passes them. They all recognise it. Madison beams
a smile. Noah motions for them to get back into the car and they do. He starts
the engine and chases after the van.
FADE TO:
EXT. OUTCASTS WAREHOUSE ROOF
Same as before. Still in slow motion. The music is still going, adding an
emotional feeling to the scene. Paige and Gabriel run for cover as the men
finally get up to the roof. They fire their guns wildly, bullets flying
everywhere. Paige pushes Gabriel down to the ground behind an outhouse [yes,
some people have them on roofs!].
Gabriel fiddles with his knife but knows he would be killed before he had a
chance to plant it into one of them. He moves closer to Paige as the footsteps
draw nearer.
The men round the corner and are met by Paige and Gabriel pushing past them.
They rush for the staircase but there are more men. They stop dead in their
tracks. Looking both ways. They make a run for the other side of the building as
-
QUINN AND ASHLEY
Rush up the steps, firing their guns at the Scorpions. Quinn pushes a couple of
them down the stairway.
ANGLE: PAIGE
Turns to see Quinn and Ashley. A brief smile crosses her face before a bullet
rips through her chest. She stands, staring at Quinn, who is staring at her.
Then she silently falls to the ground.
Quinn runs to her side as Noah, Madison, and Sam all come to the top of the roof
to fight the fight. He drops to his knees, taking her hand in his.
ANGLE: ASHLEY
Sees this as she shoots the guy who killed her. She looks around, realising
they've killed all the bad guys. She then drops her gun.
57.
EXIT SLOW MOTION SEQUENCE
Everyone stands around as Quinn holds Paige in his arms, the music fades into
the background but is still heard.
QUINN
Paige... you'll be OK... you'll be...
PAIGE
(stammers)
Quinn, it h-hurts.
QUINN
I know, baby. It'll be OK. You're
gonna be OK.
PAIGE
I feel cold. Am I...
QUINN
(to the others)
Somebody do something... we can't just,
we can't... God, please help her!
PAIGE
Quinn...
QUINN
No. No... no.
As Paige slips away Quinn buries his head in her body. Madison wipes a tear. The
others stand in silence, in shock. Gabriel steps back with Ashley, Paige's blood
on his shirt.
The music grows louder as the camera slowly zooms out, keeping them all in the
frame. Quinn is shaking, holding the dead body in his arms.
On this we...
FADE OUT.
