The last Captain of detectives did not appreciate his talents and restricted his duties to the telephone. Captain Max immediately saw his computer savvy, research expertise and attention to detail as an asset to the detective squad. Officer Garcia runs up to Detective Leary and hands him a message. Leary reads the note. LEARY Hey, We got some pictures from the hotel cameras. They are working on it now. Lets go. THOMAS OK, the M. E. Wants us in about an hour. Leary and Thomas exit. Int-police department MEDIA ROOM The room is dark the only light is from a small desk type lamp and the computer screens. Several LCD monitors, video tape machines and some state of the art electronics clutter the room, Video Technicians running videos back and forth, working on a computer terminal we find WILLIAM GATESMAN an expert in computers, video and audio analysis. Detectives Leary and Thomas enter, they sit at the console next to Gatesman. Leary Hey Bill, Got something? GATESMAN Glad to see you, good to be back? Leary Ya, good to be here. Gatesman I didnt think I was going to get anything from this system. Leary Its not like other systems? GATESMAN No, It has an encryption program, protected by a security code. Its on motions and stuff. Real sophisticated, Pretty cool Leary A lot of hotels have that kind of a system? Thomas HI, Im Detective Lucy Thomas, Nice to meet you. Any idea why this system? GATESMAN William Gatesman, Welcome. WGM SYSTEMS is a pretty small company. I spoke to a woman there, she was helpful. THOMAS So what do we have? GATESMAN I went through the whole day and matched lobby pictures up with the guest register. LEARY Anything on Bruces floor? GATESMAN No, Nothing really unusual. Bruce went in and out quite a bit. There are only four floor keys available. Bruce, Hotel Manager, Housekeeping Manager and a, Um, Lara Green have keys. 00020000064600009370640,LEARY Shes his secretary, What about everyone else? There was a load of prints up there. GATESMAN Without a key, you'd have to go to the front desk for a temporary key good for a one-time in only. LEARY show ID's, I hope?- So there is a list? GATESMAN Yes, its recorded onto the computer system and protected with a code. I am checking the lists with WGM Security now. LEARY The Hotel Manager doesnt have the code? GATESMAN Yes, just double checking to make sure it wasnt altered. LEARY Could be someone inside. THOMAS So we should have video of everyone getting onto that floor. GATESMAN Except the four card holders Leary You lost me there. GATESMAN If a card holder opens the lock, the video cameras are deactivated on the floor. Thomas Why would they do that? LEARY Bruce didn't want a record of who was polishing his knob. THOMAS Speaking from experience? Leary No guy wants a list like that. To dangerous. THOMAS Great. So what DO we have? GATESMAN So far, only one discrepancy, Its not much but, THOMAS Well take it. GATESMAN See this guy is at the desk? 6:55pm the clerk hands him what I thought looked like a key. THOMAS what is special about this guy? GATESMAN He doesnt correspond with any of the guests. Thomas Maybe he's just meeting someone... GATESMAN I haven't seen him with anyone yet. I have the company working on the hard drive. Simpson, the lady at WGM, tells me there is no way the system can be tampered with. LEARY What do you think? GATESMAN I cant see how. I had a bitch of a time getting in WITH instructions. Should I call the feds, give them a shot at it? 000200000734000099B072E,LEARY, You don't trust your own judgement? GATESMAN I do sir. But I thought... Leary I trust you. Send the report to Garcia, this case is a priority. THOMAS You said we dont HAVE a case yet. Remember this is a Heart Attack. LEARY You have little faith. It's a case. Youll see. THOMAS OK, I am curious, what this guy was doing at the hotel. Lousy picture, those flowers are in the way. GATESMAN Those flowers, they arrived just a minutes before him and guess who they are for? THOMAS Walter Bruce. Gatesman continuously fiddles with buttons on the console GATESMAN good guess. Watch, the flowers arrive, the clerk writes the floor number on the card. LEARY He stops at the desk to get the room number? THOMAS looked that way to me. I'll see if we can find out where those flowers came from. GATESMAN Here's the clerk printing now. I'll try to get something better on your mystery man. Check back with me before you leave the building. Video Technician hands two print outs to the detectives. The detectives walk into the hall and look down at the mystery man's picture. Seeing just a partial view of him walking away, they both scoff and walk out of the room. Int-MORGUE - DAY Dr. Marcus Katz, Chief medical Examiner. Dressed in surgical cap, gown and gloves. On an examination table in the center of the room, a pale and chalky Walter Bruce, the typical Y cut in his torso and various organs displayed in metal bins surround the table. There is a rancid stench of decomposing bodies, sterile chemicals, and overly bright lights. Detective Thomas's face drains and an unflattering green hue exposes her inexperience in the morgue. She starts to feel faint. Leary finds her reaction amusing. The medical examiner sympathetic to the familiar green tinge of newbie's in the morgue, hands her mask and some menthol rub for her nose. 00020000066E0000A0DE668,LEARY Don't worry you'll get use to it. THOMAS I hope not. Dr. Katz I thought that too. But it's much better when you get used to it. Here, try this. LEARY you have some good stuff for us?. Dr. Katz hands them both a set of gloves. Thomas brushes them away as Dr. Katz insists. Dr. Katz They may be unnecessary, contamination has has never happened here. I really insist, everyone, gloved and masked. Liver temp indicates that your guy here died about 8AM. Leary Was it a murder? Dr. Katz A massive coronary, but couple of things still bother me. His stomach contents was unusual for breakfast. Leary Maybe he kept unusual hours. Dr. Katz I have no scene report. How come we didn't pronounced at the scene? LEARY The manager had the hotel doctor call for an ambulance, and then us. Dr. katz They moved the body before we got there? Leary Yes, idiots. They were trying to keep it quiet. As Dr. Katz explains various issues. He points out different parts of Bruce's body. Thomas, tries to recover from her queasiness. They stand around Bruces body. Dr. Katz Do you know where he was found? THOMAS (faintly) The manager found him in the bath tub. Leary They put underwear on him. Then called the hotel doctor. It took about 40 minutes before we were called. Dr. Katz That might explain some of this. The tub makes a difference. Thomas (Clears her throat) A tub of hot water would have kept the body warm for a while. Dr. Katz Yes, The time of death could actually have been much earlier. Leary Green agrees with you. Dr. Katz I put a rush on the toxicology report, but they can only go so fast. Leary So was it a Heart Attack? 0002000005BA0000A7465B4,Dr. Katz Don't rush it. We'll see. I still need some answers. No long term heart disease. Leary His lifestyle would be stressful. Dr. Katz Does the family say anything especially stressful right now? THOMAS haven't found any family yet. Dr. Katz Who's gonna claim the body? LEARY wasn't married - I don't know. Famous guy, maybe some kids. Dr. Katz No, No kids. THOMAS how can you tell? Dr. Katz Looks like he had a serious injury. He was unable to produce active sperm. LEARY recent? M.E oh No, I'd say years ago. Scar here, under the left testicle, goes up the thigh here. Could have been almost anything sharp. The scar is so old, it's hard to tell. THOMAS Not any kind of medical procedure? M.E No, This was jagged- not a scalpel cut. I'd say he probably never had kids. Certainly not after this accident. Leary wincing at description of the injury. Leary Sounds awful, so he was shooting blanks. THOMAS Anything else important? Dr. Katz High alcohol level. Liver was bad, Looks like he had a life time romance with a bottle LEARY common knowledge at the supermarket, is that what a bad liver looks like? Thomas Afraid you're looking at yours? Dr. Katz I'll have a report on your desk in a few hours. No other injuries. INT- LAUREN'S APARTMENT 3B Lauren (O.S.) HELP! HELP ME! They both bend down, Lauren picks up the cup. Wilson picks up the mail. Their hands meet, their eyes meet. Wilson moves his face toward her. Nose to nose once again, He sees a smudge of paint on her cheek. He moves his thumb over her cheek to wipe it off. For just a moment, Lauren is captivated by his touch. Lara Green is much younger than Bruce by about 30 years. She is well dressed and very professional. An efficient secretary, but she has the looks to have been on the screen. Leary and Thomas are interviewing Lara Green, Walter Bruce's secretary. She's sitting on the sofa, Thomas sitting in a chair and Leary is pacing around the room. Thomas So what was on his schedule this past week. We have his appointment book but, you can give us more details GREEN He has no projects this month. He has been concentrating on his book. 000200000A0D0000E4E6A07,THOMAS Book? Writing it himself? GREEN his life. A ghost writer wrote it for him. The book was just about complete when he got it. It was like the writer already knew all the details about him Leary What can you tell us about this writer? GREEN Don't know much about him, Walter was pretty shady about the whole thing. LEARY How so? GREEN Wilson Martin, I'd never heard of him but Walter seemed to know him. LEARY How often did he meet with this guy. GREEN I have never met him. It's the strangest thing. LEARY Wilson Martin has never been here? How does he edit the book? GREEN E-mail mostly. As far as I know, Hes never been here. Almost like Walter didnt want me to meet him. Leary Dont you book his appointments? Green Most of them. But The book was hands off!. Walter said he would take care of all of it himself. THOMAS Is it odd? I don't know much about writing but, the books's already written. GREEN No their names, that's what's strange, LEARY Well Wilson isn't common, but I wouldn't say strange. GREEN No Walters name was Wilson until he changed it. That's whats strange. LEARY You think there was some relationship, like a relative of his? GREEN I dont know anything about Mr. Bruces family. No one does, really. That was all supposed to be in the book Thomas Do you have a copy of it? GREEN No but, I should be able to track it down in his things. I haven't been upstairs yet. Thomas We are pretty much though with his suite. It's still sealed off. I will leave word that you can go in and look for things. An officer will have to stay with you while you are in there. Leary You won't be able to use your key. The security codes have been changed. You can't remove any of his things. Green I understand. Whatever helps. Thomas If you find anything, do not touch it. The officers will have to put things in evidence bags and you'll have to wear gloves. The officers will show you. LEARY How come Mr. Bruce didn't have a staff? No security guard, No nothing? GREEN The security was put is special by Mr. Bruce. He feels, uh, felt safe here. The hotel handles everything. Drivers, chef, whatever he needs, they supply. Thats one of the reasons he bought the hotel. Its easier than travelling with a huge staff. THOMAS I'm sorry Miss Green, but you worked for Bruce for 7 years? GREEN Yes? THOMAS You just don't seem too upset about this. GREEN Oh I am. I loved that Asshole. LEARY You did? GREEN Oh, no tears? Leary, Really?, You and he.... Green Ages ago. Behind the desk is more stable than in front of the camera or between the sheets. 000200000A7E0000EEEDA78,Thomas So you didn't want a personal relationship? Green No, I wanted to work with him. Leary You jealous of his other women? Green He was a powerful man. No one knew him. He didn't have a lot of women. THOMAS The show is everything? GREEN Yes. Leary So you weren't sleeping with him, Who was? Green I was told it was a Heart Attack. Is there something I should know? Thomas We just want to be thorough. Int-Airport bar Graham is sitting at a table, Thomas walks in and he waves to her. She walks to his table. GRAHAM I am so glad you could meet me. Thomas Get me a coffee, will you? Black. Ill be right back. Thomas drops her jacket on the table and goes to the ladies room. Graham goes to the bartender, orders a coffee and carries it back to their table. Thomas returns from the ladies room, she sits down and puts sugar in her coffee. GraHAM I am so sorry I have to leave so soon. Thomas I understand. Its OK, I am gonna be really busy the next few days anyway. Yuck, this coffee sucks. GRAHAM Here add some sugar. Sounds exciting, you said a celebrity, tell me about it. Thomas You know I cant talk about cases. My new squad is something else though. GRAHAM Whats up? Thomas I thought Leary was gonna be like, I don't know, John Wayne, Dirty Harry. He's more like Dean Martin. Hes just not what I expected. GRAHAM Can you trust him? Thomas He doesn't read files or details. He goes mainly on guts. I dont know how he and the captain are gonna work together or how I can run interference. Graham He gonna be OK to back you up on this? You said it really wasnt a case. Thomas Leary thinks it's definitely a murder. He's usually right but I cant talk about it. GRAHAM Youll do just fine. Promise me youll be careful Thomas OK PAPA. Graham leans in to kiss her, she welcomes it. Graham Baby, Your father was right about one thing. Thomas What's that? Graham Italians do make beautiful babies. Drink up, I dont want you falling asleep on the parkway. Thomas Well thank you. You sure the windy city needs you back there now? GRAHAM Baby, I wouldn't leave you for a moment if I didn't have to. Come on, walk me to the gate. Thomas and Graham get up. Graham has an overnight bag and Thomas picks up her jacket. They walk out of the bar. Graham (CONT'D) Just make sure I am the only one you give this beautiful smile to. Thomas That will be easy at work. That's what I'll be doing til you get back. Graham Well I won't worry about Deano chasing you around the desk, I know you can out run him. They walk past a TV screen showing world headlines. The story of Walter Bruce's death is on the screen. Thomas watches the story and Graham looks at her face. 000200000BE40000F965BDE,Graham (CONT'D) That's the one, isn't it? Not a simple heart attack like they said? Thomas Leary is convinced it's not. But listen, I am not supposed to talk about it. No one knows it's a case yet. It's really hush hush. GRAHAM You gonna survive without me? Thomas Yes, I think I can muddle along without you. Thomas walks Graham to the gate. She kisses him good bye and he walks to the security check in. He puts his bag on the belt. She doesn't go past the security gates. Graham shows his ticket to the ticket counter and waves good bye to her. He walks down the hall as Thomas leaves the airport. Graham sits in a chair waiting for his flight to be called. Leary takes out his gun, and cautiously walks in first. Scanning the room, he relaxes and puts his gun away. Thomas then motions for Wilson to walk in. She follows him into the room. Not good ones anyway. Leary gets up and starts looking through boxes pulling out clothes. Thomas What about kids? You said you were a father.
