"KISSING RAIN"
A screenplay by Sean Logue.
Second Draft. 29/11/99
FADE IN.
1 OPENING TITLES; SUPERIMPOSED on a backdrop of a puddle of water
at night; as the rain falls down heavily, causing ripples in
the surface.
SUPERIMPOSE on the water, images of a boy and girl; their
first meeting. A voice-over begins.
DAVID(v.o)
I guess you could say this is it;
if there were ever a movie made
about my life, this is where it
would start.
The girl smiles at the boy, he smiles back, it’s a longing
smile, their eyes glow and everything around them slows down
and fades into the puddle as…
2 SUDDENLY A HEAD comes crashing to the pavement in slow motion,
as a body falls to the ground. Blood is spat from the mouth,
it trickles down the bruised face, the eyes are sluggish, half
open.
DAVID(v.o)
Actually it'd probably start here.
This is BEN, 17, a real ladies man
...not tonight.
SUPERIMPOSE: BEN.
3 MONTAGE:
--Still in slow motion. A small guy, COOPER, rushes towards a gang
of fighting youths. He looks very angry, he uppercuts one boy with
a devastating left and elbows another. FREEZE on his face as he
yells something.
SUPER: COOPER.
--A tall boy, DAVID, rushes into the fray, he pulls an even larger
boy, GRIFFIN, off of BEN. Griffin lashes out at DAVID,
connecting with his head, sending him staggering back. DAVID
regains his balance and hits back. The two tussle until another
youth grabs DAVID from behind and holds him while GRIFFIN picks up
a glass bottle and swings it at DAVID, connecting with DAVID’S
head, DAVID collapses to the ground. FREEZE, On him lying there
as GRIFFIN lays into him.
SUPER: DAVID.
--A really well-made boy, XANDER, pulls Youths off of DAVID with
the greatest of ease. FREEZE as one jumps on his back.
SUPER: XANDER.
--JOSH, a skinny kid, charges at another boy, RICE, he knocks him
down. FREEZE as he raises his fist to hit him.
SUPER: JOSH.
--A WIDE SHOT of all of them fighting and running.
DAVID(v.o)
People say that your teenage years
are the best of your life, wether
I agree or not isn't the point, they
are however the most awkward, the
largest percent of what you know as
an experienced adult, you learn as
a child.
END MONTAGE.
4 CLOSE ON AMY.
On AMY’S face, she’s screaming, FREEZE.
CAMERA PANS OUT TO:
Reveal a street corner. White iron fences align the pavement.
AMY sits opposite screaming. on the other side, on the corner
lies DAVID. XANDER chases off the last remains of the other gang.
And in the center, in the middle of it all, COOPER and JOSH stand
in shock, at the motionless body of BEN.
DAVID(v.o)
And it's not always easy.
FADE TO BLACK:
FADE IN:
5 INT. VIEWSIDE GENERAL; VIEWSIDE--LATER.
Follow AMY as she walks into the waiting room with two cups
of coffee, she walks past XANDER and COOPER who pace nervously,
and sits next to JOSH, who sits in silence, staring ahead, clearly
upset. She offers him a coffee and he doesn't respond, in the
background, DAVID comes into focus, sitting alone, staring into
space.
DAVID(v.o)
I remember playing my life like a
movie in my head, there was drama
and there was flashbacks, there are
always moments, memories that stick
in your head, playing endlessly on
a loop, but you only notice when it
stops.
The sounds of the hospital fade away and there is total silence.
CLOSE ON his eyes, deep and soulful, ZOOM INTO…
6 DAVID.
A flashback, DAVID'S past. The boy and girl; DAVID, younger
and SARAH, 15, pretty, an innocent smile, her eyes like DAVID'S,
deep. A passing glance as they catch each other’s eye, then a smile.
WHITE OUT TO:
7 DAVID’S EYE.
PAN OUT to the waiting room, where DAVID sits alone. AMY calls out.
AMY(o.c)
David, David. We can go in now.
DAVID stands up and follows.
FADE OUT:
FADE IN:
8 EXT. VIEWSIDE WALK--EVENING--ESTABLISHING.
A large three storey block of flats, it’s dull and cold outside.
A typical Scottish evening.
9 INT. VIEWSIDE WALK; HALLWAY; 2B.
ON A DOOR, number 2B, someone rings the bell.
It’s DAVID, looking slightly better than last night, his eye
is bruised, his lip sore. He hangs his head, hands in pockets,
he’s nervous. The door opens to reveal VICTORIA LYNSAY, 16, a
smart girl, pretty. Known as VICKI to her friends. She smiles,
she looks happy to see DAVID.
VICKI
Heh.
DAVID
Heh.
A long uncomfortable silence.
VICKI
Were you going to say something?
DAVID
I, uh, I had this all planned
out in my head, I, uh, I even
had it written down. But now
all I get is “heh”.
VICKI
You were supposed to be here
last night.
DAVID
I know, can we talk?
VICKI looks back into the house and then to DAVID.
VICKI
Lets go for a walk.
10 INT. VIEWSIDE WALK, STAIRWELL.
DAVID and VICKI sit at the top of the stairs.
VICKI
Your eye, it looks bad. Are
you alright?
DAVID
No. I just get really angry
when I think of what happened,
y’know. Ben’s gonna press charges.
VICKI
How is he?
DAVID
He’s doing okay, almost as
good as new, except for the
scar on his head.
(A BEAT)
I spoke to Amy last night,
she cleared up some things.
VICKI
Like I said; last night;
with the waiting.
DAVID
I think there was a lack of
communication, see when you
said you wanted us to break
up, I took that as…well
"breaking up".
VICKI
I said I needed time to think
it over.
DAVID
Everybody says that Vicki.
It’s a drop line; "think
it over" it means, "I’m
seeing someone else". Or
"I’d rather wash my hair"
not "come back tomorrow
and I’ll say yes".
VICKI
Yes?
DAVID
Yes.
She smiles, she’s relieved. DAVID leans over and kisses
her softly.
DAVID
Listen, I want you to know,
what you said that night,
what you told me, it meant
a lot that you trusted me.
And I just wanted to tell
you that I want to help…if
you’ll let me.
She smiles again, looking happy.
VICKI
Thankyou.
They kiss, she takes his hand and they stand up and walk away.

11 INT. THE CLUB--NIGHT.
The Club is a bar for young adults, a hangout, somewhere to
drink, dance and play pool. A large bar aligns the far wall,
neon signs above it. The place is jumping, a live band plays as
DAVID and a refreshed BEN walk through the crowd, drinks in hand.
BEN looks a lot better, a small unnoticeable scar on his head.
DAVID
How come I get to carry all
the drinks, was there a straw
CONTINUED.
thing I missed out on?
BEN
You’re not carrying all the
drinks…I got mine right here.
An attractive girl, JANIE, walks by.
BEN
Janie, heh, keep smiling.
Another girl, MONICA, is standing with some friends.
BEN
Monica, right?
She smiles at BEN.
BEN
She wants me.
DAVID
How do you get away with this?
Next, KIRSTEN, an attractive, intelligent girl. She walks straight
by BEN.
BEN
Kirsten!…Hi…
(speechless)
She completely ignores him.
DAVID
Way to start a conversation.
BEN
(bitter)
She’s short Dave.
DAVID
You don’t take rejection well
do you?
BEN
Like I said, short.
They come to a pool table where Xander sets up a new
game. AMY and VICKI sit on nearby barstools; they
‘hooray’ them as they arrive with the drinks. COOPER
stands with ALYSON, 16, a nice girl, though overly
possessive, she holds onto COOPER'S arm with a vice-like
grip.
COOPER
Heh, now for my birthday toast.
They raise they’re glasses.
JOSH
Toast.
A laugh from the others and a nervous smile from COOPER.
BEN
Cheers.
They drink.
CUT TO:
MONTAGE:
-- They guys play pool and drink and laugh. MUSIC Plays.
DAVID(v.o)
Okay, these are my friends and
this is the introductory character
explanation, so bear with me..
-- XANDER takes a shot and misses.
DAVID(v.o)
This is Xander, he's the tough guy,
except that he's not, he's a fun guy
who just happens to be big and not
too good at pool.
-- CAMERA MIXES TO COOPER AND ALYSON. He jokes with her and she
sulks.
DAVID(v.o)
This is Coop' and Alyson, Alyson
is a little over protective, but
she’s bearable and Cooper, well
he used to be the funniest guy
on the planet, until he met Alyson.
-- MIX TO BEN. He takes a shot and pots and he cheers himself.
DAVID(v.o)
You already know Ben, he is the
luckiest son of a bitch, if everyone
crashes their car, Ben doesn't, If
everyone falls over at ice skating,
Ben doesn't, I swear he has nine lives.
-- MIX TO AMY. She drinks and laughs.
DAVID(v.o)
Amy, Amy's actually someone I'd
consider a good friend, I can talk
to her about stuff, she's a little
crazy though.
-- MIX TO JOSH, he takes a drink.
DAVID(v.o)
Josh, probably one of my best friends
, I can tell him anything, he's my
drinking buddy and a good guy, though
I still have no idea how he gets so
many women.
-- MIX TO VICKI, she leans on David’s shoulder, laughing.
DAVID(v.o)
And Vicki, from the moment we
met I think we clicked, now
maybe looking back that was a bad
thing but it was good at the time.
END MONTAGE.
INT. THE CLUB--LATER.
They're still playing pool.
AMY
So what’s the rules of this
game again?
JOSH
Are you playing?
AMY
No but I’m inquisitive.
XANDER
Relax all you have to do
is sit back and watch a
master at work.
DAVID
Josh you’re up.
JOSH takes his shot misses.
XANDER
Ha, ha, here it is.
XANDER takes his shot and misses completely.
DAVID
Ha, all you have to do Amy,
is sit back and watch your
boyfriend make an ass of
himself.
Everyone laughs.
COOPER
So Victoria, given that I saw
you and young David, swapping
spit before I take it you decided
CONTINUED.
to give up on the personals ad.
VICKI
Well when I saw what Alyson got,
the only ad I could think of was
'Just say no'.
Once again everyone laughs. Cooper is frustrated.
COOPER
What happened here? I used to be
the funny guy, no one comes back
from my jokes. What's happening
to me?
JOSH
(taking a shot)
Old age?
BEN
(under his breath)
Marriage?
Josh pots a ball, class shot.
FADE OUT:
FADE IN:
12 INT. THE CLUB--LATER.
XANDER misses again, the guys are on the third game. DAVID and
JOSH still winning, they're getting very drunk and its obvious.
It's now time for non-sensical conversation. As the girls have left
for the bathroom.
JOSH
So Coop'; Alyson going to the
the toilet without you now? Or
is your leash just extendible?
COOPER
Ha, jealousy is a terrible thing.
JOSH
Of your shackles! Ha!
COOPER
Really, well when are you gonna
settle down long enough to get
to know the girl's name?
JOSH
Never. I've seen you, you used
to be fun, you used to be a guy.
Silence.
COOPER
I'm happy with what I got. Are
you?
JOSH
Couldn't be happier.
COOPER
What about you Dave, what do you
want? I take it you patched things
up with Vicki?
DAVID
She's here isn't she?
COOPER
That's not enough, that don't mean
Jack, it's wether you want her to
be here.
A BEAT.
DAVID
Sure I do, we're happy, gonna go
all the way.
BEN
All the way to marriage counseling,
divorce and forty quid a week on
maintenance payments.
DAVID pots the black. It rolls towards the CAMERA and fills the FRAME
as we...
FADE OUT:
FADE IN:
13 INT. DAVID'S ROOM--LATER.
In total blackness, the door opens and shed some light on the room
as DAVID enters...
DAVID(V.O)
As sad and romantically naive as it
may be, I firmly believe or believed
that when you meet that person, that
one, then you know instantly, it's
there, it hits...
...DAVID stumbles to his bed and collapses onto it, he falls asleep
and dreams.
13A EXT. MINI-MARKET--EVENING--DAVID'S DREAM.
Outside a small Mini-Market, early evening. A group of young 15
year old girls stand outside, only two or three of them, one of
which is SARAH. DAVID walks by, two years younger, he's with
another boy, an old friend, we haven't seen. SARAH watches him
walk by, watching him closely, he doesn't notice her.
SARAH
Hi David.
DAVID turns around, he doesn’t recognize her, the other girls giggle
at her attempt, she attempts a smile, sweet and innocent, DAVID
pauses and smiles back.
DAVID
Hey.
He turns and heads towards the store, his friend mumbling..
FRIEND
Who was that?
DAVID(V.O)
It hits, and you know that at that
moment your life's are destined to
entwine no matter how much you try
to stop it.
SARAH'S face is glowing now as the boys enter the store.
14 INT. DAVID'S ROOM.
DAVID sleeps with a smile on his face.
FADE OUT:
FADE IN:
15 INT. VICKI'S ROOM--LATER THAT WEEK.
The group sit in VICKI'S room watching a video. DAVID and VICKI lie
together across her double bed and COOP' and ALYSON are next to them.
BEN sits on the floor at the bottom of the bed.
COOPER
It's the boyfriend!
ALYSON
No, it's his pal!
BEN
I've seen this.
Nobody listens to him.
COOPER
Boyfriend!
BEN
I've seen it, it's pish.
DAVID
Hey!
VICKI cuddles into DAVID.
VICKI
Come on, who is it?
DAVID
I'm not gonna tell you.
VICKI
Come on it's the cop isn't it?
DAVID smirks.
DAVID
Not telling.
BEN
I'll tell you.
DAVID kicks BEN in the head.
DAVID
Shutit!
VICKI
Come on tell me, I won't say anything
to them.
DAVID
Uh-uh.
VICKI
Bet I could persuade you.
DAVID
Oh yeah?
VICKI
Yeah.
She kisses him softly and starts to tickle his neck.
DAVID
Oh, but I can do it better.
DAVID takes his finger and caresses the back of VICKI'S neck softly.
She moans and slaps his hand away.
VICKI
Stop that!
BEN
Right! If you don't turn this
pish off I'm gonna leave.
DAVID
Then leave.
COOPER
Aye and shuttup.
BEN
I will.
He stands up and hesitates.
BEN
Aw, fuck it.
He sits back down.
Then there's a knock at the door and in comes AMY and XANDER, both in
silence, non too happy, they sit apart.
VICKI
Hiya.
AMY
What's this? Oh I've seen this, it's
good, wanna know who dunnit?
DAVID
No!
COOPER
It's her pal, the wee sexy lassie
wi' the red hair.
ALYSON nudges him and COOPER proceeds to grovel to her.
VICKI attempts to get the answer from DAVID.
AMY and XANDER look at each other and then away and sit in silence.
BEN
It's him!
He points to the screen and everyone turns and throws objects at
him.
CUT TO:
15 INT. VICKI'S FRONT DOOR--LATER.
DAVID stands at the door in the hallway, VICKI stands on the inside.
DAVID
So I'll see you on Thursday?
VICKI
Yep. So what we doing for Halloween?
DAVID
Well I figured, you, me some scary
movies and whatever.
He smiles, she smiles back.
VICKI
Well I was thinking maybe we
CONTINUED.
could go to this party, some
friends at my school are having.
DAVID
Sure, if the others are going.
VICKI
Yeah, all of us.
DAVID
Okay, maybe we'll do "whatever"
next Halloween.
VICKI
Mmmm, down boy.
They kiss goodnight.
VICKI
See ya.
DAVID
Bye.
He leaves and she goes into the house.
CUT TO:
16 EXT. SUBURBAN STREET--LATER.
BEN, COOPER and ALYSON walk home, it's dark, but the streetlight,
gives a warm orange glow.
COOPER
I knew there was two.
ALYSON
Oh yeah, sure you did.
They stop as they see the girl from the Nightclub, KIRSTEN, approach.
She stops also and looks only at BEN.
COOPER
Okay! We'll, uh, see ya later.
ALYSON and COOPER leave and walk on.
KIRSTEN
Hi...I'm sorry about the other
night. How's your head?
BEN
Better. Thanks.
KIRSTEN
I was up half the night when I
heard. I came to the hospital
but you were out.
BEN
Cold?
KIRSTEN
No just dazed.
BEN
No, you look cold, here have
my jacket.
He takes off his jacket and put it around KIRSTEN'S shoulders.
Kirsten smiles at him appreciatively and they stare into each
others eyes, a long silence.
BEN
So, those stars huh?
KIRSTEN grabs him by the collar and they kiss, strong and intense,
as though it's been waiting inside, they smile and laugh as they
stop, BEN puts his arm around her and they walk.
CUT TO:
17 INT/EXT. XANDER'S CAR--SAME.
Old and small, Xander's car sits outside AMY'S house.
Inside AMY and XANDER sit in silence, until...
XANDER/AMY
This is ridiculous.
A BEAT.
XANDER/AMY
You first.
ANOTHER BEAT, A smile.
AMY
This is ridiculous, do we even
remember why we're not talking?
XANDER
Yeah, you don't wanna take this
relationship seriously, you want
me to accept that you may want to
see other people.
AMY
Okay, so you do. But can't we just
go on as we are for the time being?
Just to get along? Because this is
making everything worse.
XANDER
That's the whole point Amy, it
shouldn't be 'just to get along'
it should be because we want it
to....I think we need space.
AMY
Hmph! Space...okay.
She smiles weakly and with an unhappy sense of unresolved tension.
She gets out of the car. XANDER waits, then he starts the car.
CUT TO:
18 INT. DAVID'S HOUSE--LIVING ROOM.
DAVID comes home walking into the living room. His MOTHER, a dark-
haired woman, mid-thirties, strong and stubborn, a proud, Irish
woman, sits with his sister, NATALIE,16, dark, pretty, sultry, a
quiet girl, when she has to be.
MOTHER
What time do you call this!
DAVID
(sarcastically)
11:30?
MOTHER
Very funny smartarse.
DAVID
Who am I to name times? I was
at Vicki's watching a video,
can I go now?
MOTHER
You know your FATHER picks you
up tonight.
DAVID
You mean by some chance he came
by!
MOTHER
No, are you joking? You're sister's
very upset.
NATALIE
(sarcastically)
I cried.
DAVID
Fine. Interrogation over? Goodnight.
MOTHER
Not so fast. Where's my rent money?
DAVID
Cheques in the post Ma.
He leaves the room, she shakes her head.
CUT TO:
19 INT. DAVID'S ROOM--MINUTES LATER.
He shuts the door and leans against it. His room is cluttered with
little ornaments and, puzzles, photos, movie posters align the walls
and a large bookshelf full of videos, a bed in the middle.
DAVID collapses onto his bed and loks at a photo on his nightstand,
in the photo are DAVID, NATALIE and a young, handsome man, dark,
DAVID'S FATHER. DAVID shakes his head he looks fed-up and upset.
FADE OUT:
FADE IN:
20 INT/EXT. DAVID'S FATHER'S CAR--NEXT DAY.
DAVID sits in the passenger side, NATALIE in the back. The car is
parked outside DAVID'S house. DAVID looks excited to see his
FATHER.
NATALIE
...And I got an 'A' in History too.
FATHER
That's great honey.
DAVID
So Dad, did you get those tickets
for the game on Saturday?
FATHER
Ah! Well, I've been meaning to
tell you about that. I promised
JULIA that I'd take her out for
dinner this Saturday, kind of a
prior engagement, I forgot all
about it, I'm sorry. Maybe another
time?
DAVID
(disappointed)
Sure.
FATHER
That a boy. So how's your girlfriend?
Claire is it?
DAVID
Victoria, Claire was three months
ago!
FATHER
Oh! Well who keeps track you know,
it's hard to keep up, I'll have
to meet her sometime, I gotta go
CONTINUED.
pick up Julia but I'll swing by next
week, okay?
DAVID
Whatever.
NATALIE
Bye.
NATALIE reaches over to hug her FATHER.
FATHER
I'll see you later honey.
DAVID
Yea, see ya later.
DAVID gets out the car.
FATHER
David!
DAVID turns around.
FATHER
Maybe next time huh?
DAVID nods and leaves. His FATHER watches him go, he looks sad.
CUT TO:
21 INT. DAVID'S HALLWAY--LATER--EVENING.
DAVID sits on the stairs, he is ont the phone to VICKI.
DAVID
(on the phone)
No...I didn't get them. Another
time...no...mmmm, sounds appealing
...sure, I'll bring the whipped
cream(laughs)really?...okay...I'll
see you tonight then...bye...me too.
He hangs up the phone.
CUT TO:
22 INT. DAVID'S FATHER'S HOUSE--LIVING ROOM.
DAVID'S FATHER sits on the couch, he looks deep in thought,
JULIA comes in, a plump woman, she's in a hurry, getting
ready to go out. She goes into the kitchen.
JULIA(O.C)
Will you make your own dinner?
FATHER
Mmmmm.
JULIA(O.C)
What's wrong with you?
FATHER
(pre-occupied)
Hhmmm? Nothing.
JULIA comes back into the Living room.
JULIA
Did you see the kids today?
FATHER
Aye.
JULIA
Jesus! So that's why you're like
that, for crying out loud.
FATHER
I just...sitting outside the house
like that, my house, it gets to me
and I can't sit there for long
because of it and then I know it
disappoints them.
JULIA has disappeared back into the kitchen.
JULIA(O.C)
Don't worry about it.
DAVID'S FATHER shakes his head in disagreement.
CUT TO:
23 INT. VICKI'S ROOM, VICKI'S HOUSE--NIGHT.
DAVID and VICKI lie on her bed, facing each other, kissing. They
stop VICKI smiles.
VICKI
Stop it.
DAVID
(innocently)
Stop what?
VICKI
Stop it.
DAVID stops tickling her neck.
DAVID
Why?
VICKI
Because, I asked you too.
DAVID
Well maybe I'll rebel. Why do
you ask me to stop it, when I
know you like it?
VICKI
Because, you're...
(blushing)
It's arousing.
DAVID
Aah! So I'm turning you on Miss
Victoria.
She smiles and kisses him, they rub noses and smile at each other l
like some courtship ritual that they have between themselves.
VICKI
Yes. You have this...touch. Soft
, sensual almost...okay, now change
subject.
DAVID
No, no I like this conversation.
VICKI
Only if it has a happy ending.
DAVID
Oh and why wouldn't it, is there
some heart-breaking twist you're
keeping to yourself?
VICKI
No, but the simple fact is, for
the most part, relationships all
end sometime, wether its ten weeks
or ten years, it's naive to believe
that whole teenage sweetheart thing
is true.
DAVID
How can it be naive, it's simply
romanticism, more than 50% of married
couples met when they were teenagers.
VICKI
And more than 50% of them are
divorced. Face it David, our
relationship may not end happily.
DAVID
Why not, we are friends, I'd like
to think we always will be.
VICKI
Circumstance. Not everything begins
with Once Upon a time and ends in
happy ever after. not everything in
life is resolved with a kiss or victory.
A BEAT.
DAVID
And not everything ends.
A long silence and the door opens and in comes JOSH, AMY and
XANDER.
VICKI
Hello, it's the people who can't
knock.
AMY
When have I ever knocked?
They sit down, AMY and XANDER sit apart.
DAVID
Where's Ben?
JOSH
(smiling)
Just coming.
BEN walks in.
DAVID
Heh.
KIRSTEN walks in behind him, holding his hand.
DAVID
(surprised)
Hi!
BEN
You guys all know Kirsten.
JOSH
Heh.
VICKI
Hi.
BEN and KIRSTEN sit down.
BEN
So what we doing? Music, video
, charades, strip poker?
VICKI
I was thinking...walk.
ALL
Aw!
VICKI
What!
XANDER
Have you been outside?
DAVID
I think it's a great idea.
Everyone shakes their head at DAVID and moans.
CUT TO:
24 EXT. VIEWSIDE WALK--MINUTES LATER.
As they leave VICKI'S building, all wrapped in layers of clothing.
VICKI walks ahead talking to KIRSTEN. JOSH and DAVID walk with BEN,
leaving AMY and XANDER walking behind in silence.
JOSH
So, Ben, what's with you and
Kirsten?
BEN
(sarcastically)
What do you think?
JOSH
Gonna dump her again?
A BEAT, BEN stops and looks at JOSH seriously.
BEN
No. I'm serious this time.
DAVID
Ben going serious, that' a good
thing? When did this happen?
BEN
I met her on my way home last
night, we walked, got coffee,
talked...kissed.
DAVID
Got coffee! What are you fuckin'
Melrose Place?
VICKI and KIRSTEN have stopped and wait on the others. VICKI takes
DAVID'S arms.
VICKI
What are you guys talkin' about?
DAVID
Sex.
VICKI
Mmmm, I was thinkin' that.
DAVID
What sex?
DAVID and VICKI walk ahead of the others.
AMY and XANDER walk in silence.
XANDER
So, uh, how you been? Since...
last night.
AMY
(a smile)
Okay. You?
XANDER
Fine...we gotta get over this.
Whatever it is, a break isn't
helping.
AMY
You're right.
XANDER stops.
XANDER
Really?
AMY
Yeah.
She kisses him and walks on, he smiles and follows.
VICKI walks with DAVID now, the others trail behind.
DAVID
You remember, when I asked you
out, and you said you had to think
it over, and you, uh, you were on
holiday, but you came back early
and phoned me to say yes?
VICKI
Yeah.
DAVID
You never brought me back anything
from that holiday.
VICKI
I didn't?
DAVID
No.
VICKI
I come home early, phone you before
anyone else to tell you I wanna go
with you and out of that all you
remember is, I didn't bring you a
present?
VICKI stops and wraps her arms round his waist.
VICKI
Well that's cause I brought
me back, that was my gift.
DAVID
Mmmm, works for me.
They kiss.

DAVID
I don't know, I don't even get it
you know, I mean we had the talk, I
was prepared to wait, she didn’t want
to, then we got to the details and
she backs out and even then I thought
we were cool, till last night when
she gets all cold on me and says she
doesn't wanna see me for a week cos'
she's not sure if she can still love
me! What the fuck happened did I sleep
through all this, if I caused her this
much pain you think I'd know.
XANDER
It's not your fault man, there was
mixed wires, you were drunk, she
was drunk, you know.
DAVID
Mixed wires! Xand' when I went to

XANDER
Hell no, I'm just not gonna talk
to her, I'm sure she'll get the
message.
DAVID
It's subtle but it may work.
XANDER
Fuck her man, tell her what you
think.
A BEAT.
DAVID
Yeah, I guess something's have to end.
How much money you got?
XANDER
What you gonna call her now?

COOPER
Okay, who would win in a fight?
The Incredible Hulk or Superman?
DAVID
Superman. Of course.
BEN
Not of course! The Hulk was big,
I mean big! He was mad and he was
green! Superman might think that
The Hulk is some walking kryptonite
and run away.
JOSH
Shuttup! Superman always wins.
XANDER
There's an argument.
COOPER
Okay, another one, Brittany Spears
or Christina Aguillera?
ALL
Brittany!
COOPER
Okay that dude from 'Scream' or the
dudechick from 'Psycho'?
DAVID
The dudechick was just a dude Coop'
he just dressed as his mother and
imagined she was still alive, and
he'd be dead by the time ghostface
was around.
COOPER
And Superman and Hulk are cartoons

FADE IN:
42 INT. DAVID'S HOUSE, BEDROOM.
DAVID lies on his bed watching Jerry Maguire.
DAVID(V.O)
So, we finished, I'm free, right?
Liberated. Wrong, I'm depressed. My
mum goes away in two weeks and I'm
having a party, and me, I got no date.
Christ there will be girls there, I
just need someone to start the party with.
He sees something on the bedside table, an old letter.
DAVID(V.O)
And then again.
DAVID grabs the letter and opens it, he reads it and we hear SARAH'S
Voice.
SARAH(V.O)
Dear David, Hi, how are you? I'm
still working at that hotel in the
North, I forgot your phone number
or I would have called, I'm sorry
I never got to say goodbye. How
have you been? Are you working?
Seeing anyone? There's not much to
do here, maybe I'll see you soon, I'm
coming home in November. Love Sarah.
DAVID looks at his calendar, It's November, he smiles.

DAVID(V.O)
Flashback, 2 years, when I think, I
had my heart broken for the first time,
sadly not the last.
DAVID
I thought maybe you were coming up
here to tell me you couldn't go
on Saturday.
SARAH
Why would I do that?
DAVID
Because I'm just unfortunate.
SARAH
I'm still going.
DAVID
Good. So then, to what do I owe
the pleasure?
SARAH
My Gran, she told me, if I let
you slip, I was madder than she
is and she'd kill me.
DAVID
Your Gran has taste.
SARAH
Maybe.
DAVID
I thought I was the only one who
did that.
SARAH
Did what?
DAVID
Spoke in one-word sentences when
I was nervous.
SARAH
I'm sorry, it's not you, well
actually it is, I can talk to
anyone, and I do, but you, I
just don't, I get embarrassed
that I'll screw up.
DAVID
It's okay I feel that way too.
SARAH
You know, me and my friend, we
used to, well I used to make her
stand outside that shop every
Thursday and wait for you, we
would pretend we were waitin for
a bus.
DAVID
(blushing)
Really!
A BEAT, he moves in, they almost kiss, when his BOSS shouts.
BOSS(O.C)
David times up!
SARAH
I'd better go.
She leaves and DAVID stands alone, annoyed at his bad luck.
END FLASHBACK.
44 INT. DAVID'S ROOM.

FADE OUT:
FADE IN:

MRS. BAILY
(from the phone)
Hello? Hello?
DAVID
(into the phone)
Hi, is Sarah there?
MRS. BAILY
(from the phone)
Is that you David?
DAVID
(into the phone)
Uh...yes.
MRS. BAILY
(from the phone)
No, she's at work just now. Can I
take a message?
DAVID

DAVID
What?
JOSH
Without Ben or Coop.
DAVID
No...I mean Coop was, has been like
this for a long time, he's changed.
But Ben! Now that he and Kirsten
are sucking face, they never leave
each others side.
JOSH
Yeah.
He takes a swig.
JOSH
Don't you worry man, we'll never be
like that, drinking buddies - always.
They clink bottles together.
DAVID
Hell yeah.
They drink.
JOSH
We're too young to be tied down.
DAVID
I don't know, that's just kinky.
JOSH
You remember nobody laughing at
your jokes right?
They both laugh.
CUT TO:
48 EXT. STREET--LATER.

JOSH
So how you holding up over this
whole Vicki thing?
DAVID
I wasn't aware there still was a
thing.
He looks at JOSH.
DAVID
I'm over it.
JOSH
Of course you are, because you
went straight back to pining for
Sarah. Do you ever think maybe
you just use this girl as a leaning
post? You know she will hurt you,
although it hurts, there's no
uncertainty. I mean at least you
know it's coming. It helps you
forget about Vicki.
DAVID
(sarcastic)
You think?
JOSH
It's a theory.
DAVID
No, that's not it, I don't know
what it is. there's just something
that keeps pulling us back, we seem
destined to frequently break each
others heart, it's like Groundhog
Day or something.
JOSH
Then break it.
DAVID
What?
JOSH
If you wanna stop destiny, let her
go. It's the forbidden lure that
brings you back, your kissing rain.
DAVID
What?
JOSH
Kissing rain. Uhm...you know.
To reach for something you
can't have. to wish for the
stars but fall short cause
it's not there, to kiss the rain.
DAVID
You make that up?
JOSH
Yep.
DAVID
Bullshit! You probably read it
in some book.
JOSH
You know I don't read books.
DAVID
Where did you say you'd meet
RACHEL?
JOSH
(stopping)
Here.
They're outside an old factory. An old railway behind it. A girl's
laugh cries out from behind the factory.
JOSH
Found 'em.

CLAIRE leans on DAVID for support.
CLAIRE
Where's Natalie?
DAVID
At home.
RACHEL
Have you been drinking?
JOSH
Yep.
CLAIRE
Steamers!
JOSH and DAVID laugh. Voices can be heard from under a bridge
nearby. DAVID and JOSH recognize them, they stop laughing.
DAVID
Is that?
CLAIRE
Oh shit!
RACHEL
Quick, round the back, before they
see you.
JOSH
No, I'm not gonna run from those

DAVID

CLAIRE
Shhhh!
DAVID
I hear them.
CLAIRE is watching round the corner. A BEAT.
CLAIRE
They're gone, it's safe.

DAVID
(into the phone)
Uhm...I, I didn't have paper, I'm

So no boyfriends?
SARAH
(from the phone)
Uhm...no, you?
DAVID

SARAH
(from the phone)
So how's life?
DAVID
(into the phone)
Not much, you know, just getting
drunk, going out, enjoying myself

SARAH
(from the phone)
Same here. I'm supposed to be going
out tomorrow night with my friends
but I gotta work, just back from 3
months of work and my Mum got my
job already, I started tonight.
NATALIE walks by DAVID on the stairs.
NATALIE
How long are you going to be?
DAVID
About 10 minutes after you stop
breathing. Why don't you go hang
with you're buddies Griffin and
Rice!
NATALIE
Fuck you!
SARAH
(from the phone)
What?
DAVID
(into the phone)
Listen my Mum goes on holiday

SARAH
(from the phone)
Oh! Uhm, I'm sorry I have to work

He goes to the door.
JOSH
More ladies to the party!
DAVID opens the door and his jaw drops at...SARAH!...soaking wet,
looking as beautiful as any movie star you ever seen. Her eyes
glow like like her smile, warm and bright. Like a vision in the
rain, it only makes her look more desirable.
DAVID looks totally shocked, utterly speechless. The others are
confused as to who she is. And after a long period of silence.
COOPER
Okay who stopped the music?
DAVID
Uhm sorry did I not say Hi?
SARAH
Hi.
DAVID
You, uh, you! I thought...?
SARAH
I got away early.
JOSH
(approaching)
I'm guessing you're Sarah? Hi, do
you wanna come in? It's raining.
DAVID
Oh sorry.
SARAH comes in.
SARAH
Actually I was hoping you could
walk me to the off-license, I
feel kinda empty handed here.
DAVID
Oh didn't you stop on the way?
SARAH
I thought it'd be nicer to walk.
COOPER
It's uh , it's raining!
SARAH
Uh, yeah.
DAVID
Shuttup Coop' don't dissuade the girl.
I'll just get my jacket.
DAVID goes into the hall JOSH follows.
JOSH
David! The off-license closes at
10...it's 10:30 just now.
DAVID
I know that, she doesn't. The girl
wants to walk Josh.
He runs upstairs, JOSH smiles.
JOSH
That's my boy!
CUT TO:
59 EXT. STREET-LATER--ESTABLISHING SHOT.
As the rain falls on street lit puddles, just like the Opening Scene.
DAVID(O.C)
So...hi...
PANS UP TO...
60 EXT. STREET.
As SARAH and DAVID walk along in the rain, SARAH crosses her arms
trying to keep warm. DAVID doesn't appear to feel the cold.
DAVID
It's been a long time.
SARAH
Yeah.
DAVID
Why did you come?
SARAH
Uhm..I, uhm, how do I say this?
I've let you down, a lot, with
the cinema and the bowling and
CONTINUED.
I didn't want to ruin our friend
ship by making a habit of it.
DAVID
Oh!
SARAH
It's cold.
DAVID puts his arm around her, but hesitates then goes for it. She
looks at him surprised.
DAVID
What?
SARAH
I didn't expect that.
DAVID
(taking his arm away)
I can take it back.
SARAH
No. Just because I didn't expect
it doesn't mean you have to...
DAVID smiles and puts his arm back, pulling her close.
DAVID
Look Sarah I know you don't want
to discuss the subject of 'us'
but hey, I'm a sucker for rain.
Is there maybe another reason
why you came here tonight?
SARAH
David there's a lot of things you
don't know about me.
DAVID
That's the fun part Sarah, the
unknown, the unexpected, the
little idiosyncrasies that only
certain people know.
SARAH
Look David, I lied to you when I
said I didn't see anyone while I
was away.
DAVID
I knew that.
SARAH
There's more, I'm only here for
Christmas and New Year.
A BEAT.
DAVID
I didn't know that...But all the
more reason why we should try
, don't you see, we won't get
another chance, all those times
of ifs and buts, all those almosts
they built to something, this is
fate, destiny, motivation, the
dramatic turn in the relationship.
Why can't you accept it?
SARAH
You don't know me David. I don't
know you...
He stops her, facing off in the pouring rain. Never losing
eye contact.
DAVID
Then get to know me. People don't
sit down and take a test on how
well they know each other before
they're paired off for life Sarah.
It just happens, sometimes people
just meet and that's it 'click',
no maybe, no free holiday in Spain
. No cheesy questions or dramatic
overdrawn will they, won't they
situations...Just this.
He kisses her, strong but gentle, tender and passionate as she
kisses back, his hands run through her wet hair and caress
her cheek as we spin around them as they're lip-locked in the
moment, the rain falling in slow-motion, "Sarah kissage"
Like some great romance movie.
They're lips break apart with a soft kiss as they open they're eyes
and look at each other intensely...a long silence and then...
SARAH
Let's give it a try.
DAVID smiles, she smiles back and they kiss again as intense and
passionate as the first, a kiss to set souls on fire.
DAVID(V.O)
To be honest I'll never know why
I kissed her, but I guess you just
gotta take the moment.
FADE OUT:
FADE IN:
61 INT. DAVID'S LIVING ROOM.
NATALIE sits on the couch, completely drunk, XANDER lies half on
the couch, half off in the most awkward position possible,
totally unconscious.
NATALIE
Man has this party died.
CUT TO:
62 EXT. STREET.
SARAH and DAVID walk along holding hands in the rain. SARAH wears
DAVID'S jacket. They look extremely happy.
DAVID
So did you actually wait outside
that shop every Thursday?
SARAH
Truth?
DAVID
Yeah.
SARAH
Yes.
He laughs and she smiles.
SARAH
Oh good, there's the off-license.
Wait a minute.
DAVID stops laughing, he's caught, a look on his face (oh shit)
SARAH
It's closed.
(she looks at his face)
You knew...asshole!
He smiles and kisses her.
FADE OUT:
FADE IN:
63 INT. DAVID'S HOUSE, KITCHEN--LATER.
C.U. on KIRSTEN, looking sincere.
KIRSTEN
"Are you asking me to marry you?"
JOSH sits across from her.
JOSH
"...well it's a little sudden but
alright."
We PAN out, COOPER and ALYSON sit at the table with them. The
party still going, KIRSTEN looking shocked at JOSH, A BEAT and
then...
KIRSTEN
You're supposed to let me finish
the quote.
JOSH
Aw come on it was easy, 'Braveheart'.
KIRSTEN
Fine you go.
JOSH
Okay um..."we're gonna need a bigger
boat".
COOPER
Uhm...something about a fish, am
I right? I think this game's gone
stale.
ALYSON
So critical considering you're
last quote was "yeah baby".
COOPER
Okay, okay...that's the quote.
No I got one...here goes...
"Get out of the house, why didn't
I think of tha..."
At that moment the door opens and in walk DAVID and SARAH, DAVID
is smiling from ear to ear, they're both soaking wet.
JOSH
Hey...incredibly wet guy.
ALYSON
(to Sarah)
Hi.
SARAH
Hi.
DAVID
Come on, I'll get you a towel.
They go out into the hallway.
CUT TO:
64 INT. BATHROOM--MINUTES LATER.
DAVID takes his shirt off and dries his hair with a towel, there's
a knock at the door and JOSH comes in.
JOSH
So, how'd it go?
DAVID
I'm still half-naked man.
JOSH
Shuttup and talk.
DAVID
I kissed her.
JOSH
And?
DAVID
She kissed back.
JOSH
That's it?
DAVID
No, it was the most romantic,
gone with the wind, Romeo +
Juliet kiss ever.
JOSH
So are you guys a thing?
DAVID
I think so, yeah. Listen I gotta
go upstairs and get changed, how's
Xand'?
JOSH
He woke up but he's kinda semi-
comatose in the living room.
DAVID
Good, I'll be right back.
He leaves.
65 INT. DAVID'S MUM'S ROOM--MINUTES LATER.
DAVID comes rushing in the door, still no shirt on, but a clean
one in his hand.
DAVID
Heh, I...
Looking up at Sarah, as she just pulls a t-shirt on.
DAVID
Uhm!
SARAH
I, uh, I borrowed your Mum's
T-shirt, your sister said it
was alright.
DAVID
Uh...yeah...sure.
He wonders what she is looking at and then realizes he's still half
-naked.
DAVID
Oh! I was...changing.
They're close now.
SARAH
You know I should still be mad
at you for lying about the shop.
DAVID
Yeah?
She touches his arm.
SARAH
Yeah.
They kiss again, SARAH places her hand on his chest. Suddenly the
door opens, it's NATALIE.
NATALIE
Ahem! They're looking for you
downstairs.
DAVID
I'll be right down.
NATALIE
They want to know if you're
going to The Club?
DAVID
(to Sarah)
You wanna come with us?
SARAH
Wearing this!
DAVID
Natalie will lend you something.
Come on.
SARAH
I don't wanna.
DAVID
Come on.
SARAH
You go, I'll go home.
DAVID
No, what's the point in that?
SARAH
Then you go...and I'll stay here.
DAVID
Sarah!
NATALIE
David! Go talk to the guys and
let me talk to Sarah.
DAVID looks at NATALIE then SARAH.
DAVID
Okay.
He leaves the room.
CUT TO:
66 INT. HALLWAY--LATER.
DAVID waits outside the room wearing a shirt now the door opens
and NATALIE comes out half-closing the door.
DAVID
And?
NATALIE
She doesn't want to go to the club.
DAVID
Well that's great Natalie, I knew
that before I left the room.
NATALIE
However! She doesn't know anyone
David, she want's to stay here,
with you...tonight.
DAVID
Tonight?
NATALIE
For the night.
DAVID
(surprised)
Oh!
NATALIE
Not like that David!
DAVID
(disappointed)
Oh. I mean oh!
BEN appears around the corner.
BEN
You coming out?
DAVID looks at BEN then at NATALIE and then through a gap in
the door at SARAH.
DAVID
No. No I'm gonna skip it tonight.
BEN
(A BEAT)
Okay. We can still come back here
and stay though right?
DAVID
Yeah sure.
BEN
See you later man.
DAVID
See you.
BEN leaves, DAVID looks at NATALIE, he smiles, she nods and leaves.
CUT TO:
67 INT. STAIRCASE--LATER.
DAVID sits on the stairs with SARAH. The party has calmed down,
though it's still far from quiet. People can be heard talking,
carrying on and music plays in the background as SARAH and DAVID
talk.
SARAH
Your sister's really nice.
DAVID
She can be.
SARAH
Well if not for her, you'd be
at The Club and I'd be home.
DAVID
She definitely has her moments.
He leans over and kisses SARAH.
SARAH
Are you sure it's alright for
me to stay?
DAVID
Yeah, you can sleep in my Mum's
room. I'll sleep on the couch or
something.
She smiles.
SARAH
Thanks.
In the Living room people are dancing slowly to a song which has
just came on; "Fate" by Four Star Mary.
A BEAT.
DAVID
Would you wanna...dance?
SARAH
No.
DAVID
Come on.
SARAH
I can't dance.
DAVID
Sarah it's slow dancing, you
just move.
NATALIE comes out.
NATALIE
Would my brother like to dance?
DAVID looks at SARAH.
SARAH
Go.
NATALIE drags DAVID into the living room as SARAH watches.
They dance slowly on the floor, DAVID still looks pre-occupied.
He strains to see SARAH on the stairs, she smiles at him.
After a while DAVID turns to see that SARAH is gone, he's shocked.
Searching the room with his eyes to find her.
He stops dancing and leaves NATALIE as he runs off to find SARAH.

They walk off and DAVID heads towards the stairs, two guys walk
out the kitchen, a large, slightly overweight one, COLIN and
the smaller one GRAHAM. COLIN shouts.
COLIN
Hey Dave!
Too late DAVID runs up the stairs.
FADE OUT:

Total darkness and only the sound of a BOY and GIRL giggling
and fooling around suddenly there is light as a door opens and
we see DAVID standing at the doorway to his bedroom, he looks
in shock at the BOY and GIRL who are...COOPER and ALYSON, half
naked on DAVID'S BED, they look embarrassed.
COOPER
Dave! I'm sorry man.
DAVID
Nevermind, have you guys seen

down beside her.
DAVID
You okay?
SARAH

She looked back.
DAVID

KIRSTEN

DAVID

in the freezing cold waiting.
DAVID
It's just the lack of alcohol
in your bloodstream, must be a
new sensation for ye.
XANDER
Ha fuckin ha, what time does

DAVID
Ten.
XANDER
It's fuckin Quarter past. My

SARAH
You have Ben to talk to.

Sarah, I love you.
She stops.
SARAH
David!
DAVID
No, I mean it, you can laugh
at me one more time if you want,
I have never felt this way...
about anyone. I wake every morning
thinking of you and I can't sleep
everynight for the same reason.
You're in my thoughts 24/7, you
are my thoughts. Now maybe to you,
that's obsession or a crush, or a
passing phase, to me phases dont
pass over four years. I love you
and when I'm with you...we can be
great together, when we're

people. We...If you love me,
you'll understand that sometimes
if you truly love something you
have to let it go and if it's
meant to be, it'll come back to
you. Now please, go back inside

JOSH
Bullshit! I need a good reason.
DAVID
I'm paying you petrol money.
XANDER
So I take it she didn't call?

I don't know I'm not giving her
the chance not to though.
XANDER

We focus on JOSH as he sits transfixed on a sign that reads
'AVERY ROAD BRIDGE' , suddenly a flash of lights, a car pulls out

to avoid the other vehicle. XANDER grabs onto the seat and DAVID the
dashboard both caught unaware. The other DRIVER honks his horn and
drives away, JOSH looks shocked and pale now.
XANDER
What the fuck!
DAVID
Josh?
JOSH stares ahead, speechless.
DAVID
Josh?

I don't know, I think it wears
by this age.
JOSH
Naaa. So have you seen Sarah lately?
DAVID
Well it's Christmas Eve tomorrow.
I was going to ask if she wanted to
come out with us on Christmas night.
JOSH
Think she'll come?
DAVID
With Sarah, it's always like
"hook-a-duck", you're never
fully there, it's just how
close you get.
A BEAT.
DAVID
I got her a present though I don't
know what she'll think.
JOSH
What did you get her?
DAVID pulls out a small box and hands it to JOSH, JOSH opens
it to reveal a small, silver shining Eternity ring.
JOSH
It's real nice, must of set
you back.
DAVID
I just wanna give her something
to remember me by you know.
A BEAT. JOSH gives DAVID back the ring.
DAVID
So, what happened the other night
man, in the car? Is everything
alright?
JOSH
It's stupid.
DAVID
No, come on tell me, I want to
hear it. You can trust me.
JOSH
You know what my drivings like,
sometimes I go a little too fast.
DAVID
Yeah.
JOSH
I have this dream sometimes--
a lot. I've always had this
feeling from...somewhere. I've
just always known, that I was
gonna die young, in a car crash
to be exact, but in this dream
I see it, I'm driving down the
road, then I see the sign...
"AVERY ROAD BRIDGE".
DAVID gets it now.
JOSH
Then it happens, that's why I
freaked.
DAVID
I've had that seem dream Josh, about
you, but it's just fear, cos' I see
how you drive and I'm worried about
you but that's all it is a dream, a
fear.

DAVID looks the other way, totally dismissing her.
XANDER

Oh! Hi.
XANDER
Sit down have a drink.
VICKI
Thanks, I'll just get Amy.
XANDER looks like "oh shit, shouldn’t have said that" a look of
disbelief at his stupidness. DAVID laughs to himself.

VICKI
Heh.
DAVID
Heh.
VICKI
Is it just me or are you not
talking to me at all tonight?
DAVID
Well I have a good reason.
VICKI
Look I'm sorry about what happened,
I never meant for any of it, it was
a heat of the moment thing...I really
did care of you...I just...not anymore
When I said those things I was angry
and hurt and in my mind it was right.
DAVID
So that makes it okay, for you to
brand me a fuckin rapist.
VICKI
I didn't mean it to turn out like
it did, I said some things and then
other people jumped to conclusions
and it got blown out of all proportion.
I'd still like to be your friend...
if you let me.
A BEAT.
DAVID
I'd like that.
She smiles at him and they hug.
VICKI
So hows things in your life?

DAVID looks pre-occupied with something across the room.
VICKI

DAVID
Yeah, you're right, the doorbell
does work.
COOPER
Raising the dead would be easier.
Where you been man?
DAVID
I, uh, I haven't felt like company.
COOPER looks down at DAVID'S hands, his knuckles are cut and bruised.
COOPER
Looks like it hurt you more than
the target. Look David I just wanna
let you know, we're still you're
friends, you can talk to us.
DAVID
Sure.
COOPER
I mean that.
DAVID
I know, I'm just, I need time.
COOPER
What about Friday night? Boys night?
Bottle? Yes? No?
DAVID
Sure, see you next Friday.
COOPER
See you then.
COOPER turns to go and DAVID closes the door and it...

JOSH, DAVID, BEN and COOPER sit drinking.
BEN
You know, we should do this more
often. I miss these boys nights.
JOSH
Yeah, it's been a while though.
DAVID
Too long.
COOPER
No more, from now on, every Friday
night is boys night.
JOSH
Yeah.
DAVID
I'll drink to that.
They drink.
JOSH
Shit wait a minute, what time is
it?
DAVID
Five past Ten.
JOSH
Oh shit! I gotta go pick up Amy.
DAVID
What?
BEN
Yeah I gotta go Kirsten.
COOPER
And Alyson's expecting me.
DAVID
Heh, what happened to boys night

They're leaving.

Sorry man, next week.

INSERT: WEEKS LATER.
FADE IN:
122 INT. THE CLUB--WEEKS LATER.
BEN and DAVID are in the Club, standing at the bar, looking sober.
DAVID
Thanks for coming out.
BEN
I was supposed to meet Kirsten
but I've done enough of that
lately, if I can't spend time
with my mate. I'm not much of a
mate.
DAVID
I'm just tired of Josh, y'know
every week, some excuse, he used
to be my beer buddy.
BEN
Looks like you got a new beer
bud. I don't know if me and
Kirsten will last much longer.
DAVID
Oh Ben, I didn't mean it like
that, I'm happy for you guys.
BEN
No, I know. We just argue too
much man.
DAVID
Ben, you and Kirsten are, well
you're "You and Kirsten" You're
made for each other, don't let
that go, talk to her.
BEN
Maybe you're right. To beer buddies.
DAVID
Beer buddies.
They toast.
DAVID
You know it's funny, I've known
you longer than any of the others
yet for all the time we've hung out
, we've never really talked, now it
seems we're all thats left.
BEN
Yeah, who'd figure? So hows your
other problem?
DAVID
Which one?
BEN
Blonde, bout so high.
Demonstrates her height.
DAVID
Sarah, hah, I've decided to
give up on Sarah. I've had
enough. I don't wanna know
anymore.
BEN
(laughing)
Bullshit. Right thing to do
but bullshit.
DAVID
Maybe, my biggest problem right
now is my Father.
BEN
Yeah? I thought you gave up
on him too?
DAVID
Can't forget what's in your
blood. I just lost hope. My
Mum goes on holiday next month
as you know and I'm not allowed
to stay at home after last time.
I'm supposed to go to my Uncle's
Wedding at the same time as she
leaves, so I have to stay with my
Dad for the weekend at least.
BEN
Oh, problems?
DAVID
Endless. How are me and my
neglective Father who I've not
seen in God knows how long,
have nothing in common with and
have basically lost all respect
for, supposed to get along for
a week in the same house? And to
make it worse, his girlfriend
clearly has some adolescent fear
of not having him all to herself
and hates me. What a family picture,
huh?
BEN
You gonna go?
DAVID
Can't wait.
FADE OUT:
INSERT: ONE MONTH LATER.
FADE IN:

table's, drinking, chatting, a live band plays. DAVID arrives,
alone. He shakes his UNCLE'S hand, a strong, well-made man and he
kisses the BRIDE on the cheek, a pretty woman, takes pride in her
appearance. He sees the rest of the family at a table and approaches.
DAVID
Dad.
FATHER
David, can I buy you a drink?
DAVID
Let me...beer?
He goes up to the bar.
124 INT. RECEPTION HALL.
DAVID sits at the table, seemingly getting along with his relatives,
he spots a young girl, LAUREN, 18, very pretty, she sits with her
friends, laughing, she smiles at DAVID. he smiles back and DAVID'S
UNCLE leans over to him.
UNCLE
That's my Bride's sister, Lauren
looks like she likes you. Why don't
you ask her to dance?
DAVID
No, I'm leaving soon. I'm gonna meet
my friend.
UNCLE
So! Last dance. Ask her.
DAVID
(A BEAT)
Why not.
He gets up and walks towards her.
DAVID
Hi, you wanna dance?
Before he finishes, she is up and leading him onto the floor, as a
slow song starts.
LAUREN
So you're Peter's son?
DAVID
You've done your homework.
LAUREN
I'm inquisitive.
DAVID
And you're Donna's sister?
Donna's married to my Uncle
which makes you his sister in
law, so what are we?
LAUREN
Happily un-related, but looking
for a connection.
DAVID
You're forward.
LAUREN
You were the one who asked me
CONTINUED.
to dance.
DAVID
Can't beat you, can I?
LAUREN
Only if you ask nicely.
They smile at each other. The music stops and they move closer, lips
almost touching when DAVID pulls away.
DAVID
I, uh, I'd better go, I gotta meet
a friend.
LAUREN looks confused, let down.
LAUREN
Uhm, yeah, okay, sure.
DAVID leaves, he says goodbye to his FATHER and UNCLE as
LAUREN watches him go.
CUT TO:
125 EXT. RECEPTION HALL--MINUTES LATER.
DAVID leaves the hall, walking down the hill.
CUT TO:
126 EXT. PAY PHONE.
DAVID reaches a pay phone at the bottom of the hill, he opens the
door
and is about to go in, when a voice calls out.
GUY(O.C)
Hey Ross!
DAVID turns.
DAVID
Oh shit!
CUT TO:
127 INT. RECEPTION HALL--LATER.
DAVID'S FATHER and STEPMOTHER are packing away the bouffet, the
Hall is quite empty now. DAVID'S FATHER turns and looks towards us...
FATHER
What the hell!
DAVID stands at the door his nose bleeding, his lip burst, his face
covered in blood.
FATHER
What happened to you?
DAVID
Griffin...him and the others who
got Ben, they were waiting for me
at the pay phone, I tried to fight
back but there was too many.
FATHER
That's it!
His FATHER heads off out the door, DAVID and his STEPMOTHER run after
him.
DAVID
Dad!
CUT TO:
128 EXT. RECEPTION HALL.
DAVID'S FATHER is racing down the hill, looking for the gang, a look
of madness on his face. DAVID is right behind him, JULIA is trying to
stop him. She stands in front of him.
JULIA
Peter get back in inside, come on.
Peter move it!
FATHER
No! I'm gonna get those little
bastards!
DAVID
Lets go back in, I'll get my own.
JULIA
No you won't, get back inside Peter
now!
DAVID
Dad!
JULIA
David shuttup, go inside. Now
Peter get back in!
He stops. DAVID takes his arm.
DAVID
Come on Dad.
CUT TO:
129 INT. RECEPTION HALL--LATER.
DAVID sits in the hall with his GRAN, he is cleared up now,

holding a handkerchief for his lip.
GRAN
Are you alright?
DAVID
I'll live.
JULIA comes in, a face like thunder.
JULIA
Shuttup. David just shuttup.
DAVID
What!
JULIA
You heard me, your Father
is out there about to get himself
killed because of you, all you do
is cause trouble, would you bring
this to your Mother's door?
DAVID
This is not my fault!
JULIA
Oh no, it wouldn't be, those guys
hit you for no reason.
DAVID
Yeah pretty much, they gave me
a beating because obviously the
last time they almost killed my
friend wasn't enough of a rush for
them. I didn't ask for this.
GRAN
David calm down.
DAVID
Why? Who is she to shout at me?
She's not my Mother!
JULIA
And who ever could be? Your Mother
the angel. Never did a wrong thing
Your Father is miserable because
of you, because of how you treat
him. You haven't contacted him in
months.
DAVID
That's because he's only ever tried
to see me about three times in a year
, and thats out of guilt. I gave up
on him when he stopped calling, stopped
visiting, stopped caring.
FATHER
That's enough!
DAVID
Oh, here he comes to save the day,
always there when you least need him
, how about when I did need you Dad,
huh? How about then?
FATHER
Maybe you shouldn't stay with us
tonight, maybe your Gran will have
you. What do you think?
DAVID
You've obviously made your choice.
FATHER
David!
DAVID gets up and storms out.
DAVID
Save it!
CUT TO:
130 EXT. RECEPTION HALL.
DAVID walks down the hill as JOSH'S car pulls up.
JOSH
David get in.
CUT TO:
131 EXT. HIGH SCHOOL--LATER.
JOSH'S car sits by the wall. Where DAVID and JOSH stand talking.
COOPER sits on the wall, quietly observing.
JOSH
Those fucking bastards! Next time
I see them, I'll fuckin' kill 'em.
DAVID
Yeah well.
JOSH
What does that mean?
DAVID
What's happening to us Josh?
JOSH
What do you mean?
DAVID
I mean 'us' the guys, the boys.
CONTINUED.
A year ago, we'd all be sitting
here, all of us, Me, You, Ben,
Cooper and even Xander, just
drinking, discussing our future,
always taking it for granted that
we'd be in each other's future.
Flash forward a year and and there
is no 'us'. I feel like we're
slipping away, everything's changing
and I'm left behind.
JOSH
It's change David, everything
changes.
DAVID
But why, why does it have to?
I dont' want change, I need
you guys.
JOSH
What do you want David? The
reason you feel left behind
is because you don't want to
go on, you want to stay. I
mean there must be something
you want, something you wanna
do with your life?
DAVID
You wanna know, I wanna be a
film director, I want to go to
film school but I'm scared.
Scared I won't make it, scared
I won't cut it, scared I'll lose
you guys forever, scared of leaving.
JOSH
David you can't ever lose us,
we'll always be friends, best
of friends.
DAVID'S silent.
JOSH
But that's not all is it?
DAVID
What?
JOSH
You know what I mean. There's
someone else you can't leave
behind.
DAVID
Yeah.
JOSH
What is it? What is it about
her David?
DAVID
Do you think I want to feel this
way, like every time I see her or
hear her voice, my stomach will
explode and my hands shake, like
every time I kiss her lips I'm in
some heaven, like nothing I ever
imagined and how every morning I
wake up wanting to see her, needing
her, how every moment I think of her,
want her, need her and how every time
she lets me down, I feel like my soul
just died.
A BEAT.
DAVID
I don't know what it is Josh,
I don't know why, for the past
three years I've done nothing
but think of her, but I do, and
it kills me not knowing what she
feels and it kills me knowing that
she leaves tomorrow, for good and
I may never see her again. I love
her Josh. I didn't think I knew
the meaning of the word, but I do
, I love her.
A BEAT. They exchange glances, a moment between friends.
JOSH
You want my piece? As a friend I
think you should go to Film School
, be all you can be. As a mate, I
want you to stay. I don't wanna
lose you either man, but you need
this and for what it's worth, forget
everyone else, as for Sarah, stop
kissing rain and go see her tomorrow.
Tell her how you feel and ask her
straight up if she loves you and
wether she says yes, no, maybe, look
into her eyes and you'll know and then
...it'll all come clear and that's
when you'll know what to do.
A BEAT.
DAVID
I don't wanna be no bufty but I
love you man, thanks.
They embrace each other, hugging. COOPER smiles, he looks as though
he's realized something, as though he feels left out, not just from
this but everything.
JOSH
Okay, I'm gonna give Vicki a driving
lesson tomorrow but I'll call you and
see how it goes okay?
DAVID
Yeah.

AMY
I really feel good with Josh
y'know, I feel right, like I
wanna spend the rest of my life
with him.
ALYSON
Really! Wow that's great!
AMY
So what about you and Cooper?
No sign of the big 'M'?
ALYSON
Maybe, I think, he's pondered it.
He should be here soon.
AMY
Mmmm, and the Jewelers just across
the road.
She turns to look out the window at the Jewelers and is surprised
top see BEN exit with a small box, like a ring.
AMY
We didn't see that!
ALYSON
So where is Josh?
AMY
He's teaching Vicki to drive.
ALYSON
Don't envy him.
CUT TO:
137 INT. JOSH'S CAR.
VICKI is driving, JOSH is panicking in the passenger seat.
VICKI
This is great, I bet a driving
instructor wouldn't let me drive
on the road on my first lesson.
JOSH
First lesson? Instructor? I
thought you were ready for your
test?
VICKI
I am, don't you think?
JOSH
Oh shit!
CUT TO:
138 EXT. BUS STATION--ESTABLISHING.
It's starting to drizzle slightly, DAVID runs into the station.
CUT TO:
139 INT. BUS STATION.
-- DAVID runs through the station, trying to beat time.
-- SARAH waits in line to get on the bus.
-- DAVID is getting closer.
-- SARAH boards the bus.
-- DAVID runs towards the terminal just as the bus pulls away.
DAVID
Wait, wait Sarah!
It's too late, she's gone. He stands alone, unanswered, till someone
answers.
SARAH(O.C)
Looks like you missed the bus.
He turns to see SARAH.
DAVID
Sarah! But you...
(looking back at the bus)
Obviously aren't on that bus.
SARAH
Wrong terminal, my bus is two
terminals up, engine problems.
He smiles.
CUT TO:
140 EXT. STREET--LATER.
DAVID and SARAH walk away from the Bus station. The rain hs stopped.
DAVID
So you're staying?
SARAH
I said there was engine problems
David.
DAVID
Oh!
SARAH
I just don't know if I have
anything to stay for, except my
family of course.
DAVID
Me?
SARAH
Maybe.
DAVID smiles it starts to rain.
DAVID
Great! Rain! Never seems to stop
here.
SARAH
I don't know I like it, it's
atmospheric.
DAVID
It's wet.
SARAH
David?
DAVID
Yes?
SARAH
Will you dance with me?
She hold out her hand, he takes it in his and pulls her close.
They dance slowly at first then start to spin and get into a
full dance routine as he spins her around and into his arms,
he smiles and kisses her, she kisses back.
DAVID
This is crazy you know that?
SARAH
I know.
Now they put their foreheads together.
DAVID
So what does this mean?
SARAH
I don't know, does it mean
anything?
DAVID
Maybe it means we can finally
get over this adolescent regime
we have of psychological games
we seem to play with each other,
and admit the plain truth is we're
scared.
SARAH
Scared of what?
DAVID
Change.
SARAH
You think?
DAVID
Sarah I want to ask you something
and I want you to answer the truth
...do you love me?
Silence.
DAVID
You can think about it...look
I don't wanna pressure you, but
you know how I feel, and I need
to know.
SARAH
David, love, so many people fall
in love and it never lasts, it
always ends in sadness for someone
, there is always an end. And to
me that means that maybe true love,
can only last forever within. It
only occurs when two people just meet
like destiny and like stars they meet
and collide and there's a spark, y'know
an explosion, love, and just like that
as fast as it came, it's gone, but it
lives on within, and it can't ever end
if thats true, but also it can't
ever be rekindled.
DAVID
Sarah...
SARAH
David I can't tell you why I pushed
you away, cos' I don't know why myself.
What we have, is something I've never
felt, but it seems someone always
gets hurt and I can't do that to you
, not again and I think we have to
go on and say goodbye.
DAVID
Yes or no?
SARAH is speechless, a tear rolls down her cheek and she looks into
DAVID'S eyes as he does the same and lowers his head, she slips off
the ring he gave her at Christmas and puts it in his hand, she clasps
his hand closed over it, cries a final tear and walks away.
Leaving David alone.

window, she doesn't see him, he stops to look at her, he waits,
contemplating, then he turns and leaves.
CUT TO:
142 EXT. JOSH'S CAR.
VICKI still driving, unnoticed they pass the sign, "AVERY ROAD
BRIDGE"!
JOSH is distracted trying to help VICKI, too busy to notice
the other car pulling out in front of him.
CUT TO:
143 EXT. STREET.
DAVID stands alone, at the bus station, his grip loosens and he
drops the ring, it falls to the ground in a puddle, as DAVID
stands still then turns and walks away as we PAN UP and OUT.
DAVID(V.O)
Funny thing about love, you
don't see things coming, guess
you can't ever see them coming,
but like Josh said, it's what
you do next that counts.
FADE TO BLACK:
FADE IN ON:
JOSH'S car goes over the bridge and the brake lights come on in the
rain filled afternoon.
