EXT. PARK STAIRS - DAY
Concrete steps dive down a juniper covered slope.
A tranquil morning scene until...
An inline skater, RANDY CAGE (early 20's), flies over the top
and lands on the concrete shoulder of the steps. Dropping
into a crouch he starts a screaming descent. His hair is tied
back into a ponytail and he's wearing sunglasses. His WHITE
SLICKER, dotted with colored splotches, flutters like a cape.
Another SKATER quickly follows, landing on the other side.
As they descend, hopping over branches, they trade shots from
PAINTBALL GUNS. Randy firing ORANGE, his opponent RED.
At the bottom they jump a parked car and land on a twisting
park road. Cars screech. Horns blare.
They head downhill weaving through the traffic like
synchronized dancers, riding the edge of total disaster.
Their shots splatter into cars. Cars swerve.
The second skater nudges Randy off the road, toward a bench.
Randy skates over the bench, jumps a trash can, and digs his
way back onto the road.
By then, hitching a ride from a car, the second skater has a
big lead.
Randy stops by a drain pipe heading down through the trees.
He studies it for a second. Then
He jumps on, drops into a crouch and shields his head from
the branches as he flies down. He's knocked off by a branch,
but gets right back on.
Where the pipe turns, he jumps off. Landing in junipers, he
skates and hops his way down until he reaches a paved trail.
Jumping dogs and dodging joggers, they continue.
Ahead a cyclist (older woman) approaches on a crossing trail.
Randy digs in his edges and veers off the trail to hug a tree.
The other skater jumps the cyclist.
Clips her front wheel, spilling her.
And keeps on going.
Randy helps the visibly shakened woman to her feet.
While he retrieves her bike, she checks herself for damage.
RANDY
Are you all right?
Angry, she snatches the bike from Randy.
CYCLIST
What do you care? You ride through
here like mad men with no
consideration for anyone else.
RANDY
We were just... You're right.
Look, I'm sorry.
Throwing Randy a glaring stare, she mounts and rides off.
EXT. WILLOUGHBY'S RESTAURANT PARKING LOT - DAY
Randy slashes across the lot.
Dodges a car.
A backpack and Steelers jacket have replaced his slicker.
He finishes with a grind up the stair railing.
A banner overhead proclaims: Forty-niner Headquarters.
INT. WILLOUGHBY'S - DAY
Randy, braced against the hostess podium, changes to sandals.
He dabs at a paintball spot with water from a flower vase.
RANDY
Peggy Swanson.
The Hostess checks the list. Points to the corner.
HOSTESS
Corner table.
RANDY
(to hostess)
Pray for me.
Randy wades through the "Gen X" crowd to Peggy's table.
He pulls a stuffed animal(kangaroo) halfway from his pack and
shoves it back in.
He puts on his happy face.
PEGGY
You're late. I ordered you a Swiss
bacon burger
Randy drops his pack and slides into the seat opposite her.
RANDY
Sorry. Car's in for a brake job.
PEGGY SWANSON is Randy's age and attractive. Her appearance
is a statement of her aspiration to rise above the turkeys
she is forced to work with. Only a shotgun can stop Peggy
from succeeding.
PEGGY
You could have called. I'm having
a busy day.
RANDY
You're taking my calls again?
PEGGY
You could've left a message.
Randy regroups. Sets the stuffed animal on the table.
Nudges it toward Peggy.
RANDY
Let's start over. A peace offering.
Peggy eyes the animal and looks away, dismissing it.
PEGGY
Toys are your answer for everything.
Randy's mood changes.
RANDY
The cooling off period worked. Our
relationship is a block of ice.
PEGGY
The cooling off period was your
idea. Another example of you
refusing to accept reality.
RANDY
What changed, Peggy? When did it die?
The waitress brings the food. Peggy's is a salad.
PEGGY
It didn't change, Randy. You did.
(to waitress)
I wanted the Blue Cheese.
(to Randy)
Ever since the accident you've
been a different person. Someone
I don't know or understand.
RANDY
All I need is a little time to
find myself.
Peggy indicates the paint spot on his jacket.
PEGGY
When are you going to start
looking? All you do is play games,
waiting for some cosmic event to
show you the way.
(sigh)
For once in your life, why don't
you think of someone else? I have
plans for my future.
RANDY
That's why we moved here, isn't it?
PEGGY
That's why I did. I'm not sure why
you did. I think it's painfully
obvious it's over.
RANDY
I accept that, no more Peggy and
Randy against the world. But
you're the last shred of hope I
have of getting past this hell I'm
stuck in. Can't we even be
friends? A lunch... A shared
secret... A sympathetic shoulder.
Isn't there some neutral ground?
PEGGY
This isn't a game, Randy. Over the
last few months, I've come to
realize we have nothing in common.
It didn't matter before. Now it
does.
RANDY
What about intimacy? We used to
hold each other when we needed to
cry.
PEGGY
I'm not your mother. She's dead.
RANDY
That hurt.
Peggy--upset, angry--gathers her things and stands.
PEGGY
I knew it. I knew you'd make me
the villain. Make it all my fault.
RANDY
(shocked, sad)
You're not a villain. You're Peggy.
She hesitates, cooling down.
PEGGY
If you ever stop running from
yourself...
Not sure what else to say she leaves.
Randy munches his burger and watches her go.
He repositions the stuffed animal so that it faces him.
RANDY
What do I do, Skippy? Who can I
talk to now?
EXT. BAYSIDE SYSTEMS CORPORATE BUILDING - DAY
Randy cuts between parked cars and hops a hedge separating
rows of cars. He twists sideways to avoid an opening car door.
DRIVER
You jerk, Cage. When are you going
to grow up?
Randy attacks the steps to the building, clearing them in two
hops. He slows to jerk open the front door and glides through.
INT. LEVEL ONE DEVELOPMENT AREA
Large maze of cubicles.
INT. RANDY'S CUBICAL - LIGHT
Black cloth is stretched over the desk portion of his cubical
and thumbtacked to the wooden rail along the top, creating a
fortress of solitude.
Lots of Pittsburgh stuff: Steelers, Pittsburgh Panthers, etc.
Randy glides in, dumps his pack and takes off his skates.
A piece of paper stuck on his computer terminal: "My Office."
He jerks the paper free and punches a number into the phone.
RANDY
Any tingles from the tripwire?
INTERCUT with JIM ATWOOD, who's turning thirty and pudgy.
JIM
Not a peep. How'd it go with Peggy?
RANDY
Great. She drove a stake through
my heart. Do you know what Burt
wants to see me about?
JIM
Maybe you're being promoted.
RANDY
Not unless they've taught pigs to
fly and are looking for a wing
commander. Kill the daemon.
JIM
Are you kidding? There's a big
football weekend coming up. Our
friends will not be pleased.
RANDY
They're adaptable.
INT. BURT FOREMAN'S OFFICE - DAY
Randy sticks his head through the door and waves the note.
RANDY
You wanted to see me?
Folders and books piled everywhere.
Burt looks up from his terminal. Motions Randy to enter.
BURT
Close the door and have a seat.
Randy picks folders from the chair before sitting.
As he talks Burt looks for a new home for the folders.
BURT
I'm sure you heard the rumors
about the budget cut back.
RANDY
I'm having a stressful day, Burt.
BURT
Sorry. You're the only one who has
completed his project.
RANDY
Give me someone else's and I'll
finish it quicker.
BURT
That's your problem: you're not a
team player. You never did fit in.
RANDY
Is that why you picked me?
BURT
That's why I'm not keeping you,
despite the fact you're the best
programmer I have.
(finds a home for the
folders.)
Be honest. You've been dissatisfied
since you got here. You've been
building the boat for months. I'm
just pushing it away from the dock.
RANDY
You're right. I was hoping for
calm seas, though.... Don't I even
get a lunch?
BURT
After that time at the Happy Frog?
RANDY
I forgot about that.
Burt spreads his hands in a gesture of helplessness.
BURT
Sorry, but you're the only one
that makes sense from the team
approach. I only wish you earned
more.
(returns to terminal)
Margaret in HR has your
termination packet.
INT. RANDY'S CUBICAL - DAY
Jim plays with Randy's paintball gun while Randy takes down
his posters and packs his gear in a cardboard box.
JIM
I told you not to use the
company's motivational posters for
paintball practice.
Jim swaps Randy the paintball gun for a stapler.
RANDY
That was protected free speech.
(shoulders droop)
What will I do without Peggy?...
I feel as though I've been blasted
with a death ray. I think I'm
bleeding internally.
Jim pockets a ruler and calculator.
JIM
You need to be degaussed and I
know just the place. We can pick
up your car on the way.
EXT. ELECTRIC COMPANY PARKING LOT - DAY
Randy parks his sporty hatchback next to Jim's minivan.
Randy stares in awe at the garish building plastered with
signs describing all the wonders of womanhood that can be
glimpsed within. A banner proclaims: "We've got the juice to
turn you on." Music leaks through the walls.
RANDY
Will this be hazardous to my
health?
JIM
Guaranteed.
(hands Randy an
envelope)
Here's your cut. I'm going to miss
the income.
Randy takes the money, checks the pack of bills and hides it
under the floor mat of the car.
RANDY
Talk to the guy taking over the
network.
JIM
Burt's doing it. And he lacks your
entrepreneurial spirit.
(puts arm around
Randy's shoulder)
C'mon, let's actualize some
fantasies.
INT. ELECTRIC COMPANY ENTRANCE - DIM LIGHT
The walls vibrate with the music.
Enough strobing lasers to induce an epileptic seizure.
In the center of the cacophony, a naked woman pole dances.
Lap dancing, for the most part, is more discretely performed
at the outer fringes of the light.
Randy and Jim stop to pay the cover charge.
SAMMY WU (30's) dressed like an international banker, enters.
One look at Sammy and wise men step aside. Compared to him,
Fu Manchu was a humanitarian.
Sammy orients himself before pushing past Randy.
WE FOLLOW HIM through the crowd to CURTIS PRICE's table.
Price, a splineless toady, is a contended man until...
SAMMY
How's the pizza business?
It's as though death touched Price's shoulder.
He attempts a smile.
PRICE
Great, great, Sammy. Sandy says
another month we'll be making
money.
Sammy sits opposite Price. Takes out a bottle of HOT
LOUISIANA PEPPER SAUCE. As he surveys the place he shakes a
couple of drops in his palm.
SAMMY
Screw pizza. I know a nice IPO
that could be making you rich.
PRICE
Yeah, so how come you're still
slinging shit?
A flash of anger. Then Sammy licks the hot sauce off his
palm. He takes out an envelope and tosses it to Price.
SAMMY
Susie wants you to cover the drop
tomorrow.
PRICE
Jeez, not again. Why me? Why
aren't you doing it?
SAMMY
Turk's been cutting the back end
of his package and pocketing the
money. Smiling Jack and me are
going to administer some aversion
therapy.... You want me to tell
her you're too busy?
PRICE
Jeez, Don't do that. I'll do it.
A MAN places a bundle of bills in Price's hand and disappears.
Price pockets the money and stands.
PRICE
Order us something. I got to go to
the head.
INT. ELECTRIC COMPANY - DIM LIGHT
Jim wedges Randy into a booth.
BOBBI PAIGE appears. Barely into her twenties and dressed in
the bare essentials, she's a veteran of the trenches.
Dangling silver earrings frame her pretty face.
BOBBI
(wearing her best
smile)
Hi, I'm Bobbi. What can I get you?
Randy wantonly examines Bobbi from head to foot.
RANDY
You have nice... bones.
Bobbi stares curiously at Randy before shifting her gaze to
Jim. Jim waves a credit card at her.
JIM
Two buckets of beer.
(to Randy)
We'll save the cash for the good
stuff.
(Notices Randy
tracking Bobbi's
retreat)
You forgetting about Peggy?
RANDY
Peggy who?
JIM
That's the spirit.
INT. ELECTRIC COMPANY / MEN'S ROOM - DIM LIGHT
Price exits followed by CLAY SINCLAIR (20's). Clay believes
that the world owes him and is willing to take it. Except for
his short hair, Clay could pass for Randy Cage.
CLAY moves over to Bobbi, busing a table.
Coming up from behind, he places his hands on her waist. She
turns with a flash of anger. Relaxes when she sees it's him.
CLAY
It happens tomorrow. You set?
Bobbi puts her arms on his shoulders. Smiles seductively.
BOBBI
Do we really need him? Can't we do
it ourselves?
Clay peels her off. Wags his head.
CLAY
It's all or nothing. If you want
the money, you better get it
worked out by tomorrow.
INT. ELECTRIC COMPANY - DIM LIGHT - RANDY & JIM
They are drinking from long neck bottles.
Many dead beers stuffed into the buckets.
Randy peers into his beer bottle.
RANDY
Without Peggy, the only thing left
of my life is the hole.
JIM
What you have is an attitude
problem. This is a great
opportunity for a fresh start. You
can go anywhere, do anything. I
wish I were you.
RANDY
I'm not ready to come out of the
box. Why don't you go first?
JIM
(waves it off)
Agnes wouldn't let me.
INT. ELECTRIC COMPANY - DIM LIGHT - SAMMY & PRICE
Sammy notices Bobbi collecting drinks at the bar.
SAMMY
Who's she?
PRICE
Bobbi something. She's new.
(stands)
I guess I'll call it night. See
how Sandy's doing.
SAMMY
(eyes on Bobbi)
Sure. Knock yourself out.
INT. ELECTRIC COMPANY - DIM LIGHT - RANDY & JIM
Jim watches the current pole dancer, mouth open in awe.
JIM
Look at the way she swings those...
Jim follows Randy's gaze to Bobbi.
JIM
Why are you fixing on her? The one
on stage has a set of melons
capable of warping time and space.
RANDY
She's got... style.
JIM
Style?
(studies Bobbi)
How can you tell?
Randy takes a swig while searching for the answer.
RANDY
The way she... stands.
Jim finishes his beer. Staggers to his feet.
JIM
If you're going to start talking
metaphysically, I'm leaving. You
coming?
RANDY
I think I'll stay awhile.
JIM
This can become an expensive
addiction.
Jim stuffs what's left of his cash in Randy's pocket.
JIM
Call me.
Jim leaves. Randy signals Bobbi with a raised beer bottle.
BOBBI
You must be new at this. You're
suppose to nurse them.
RANDY
If I don't drink, how will I get
to talk to you?
Bobbi smiles. Runs her hand through Randy's hair.
BOBBI
I could dance for you.
Randy glances at a lap dancer and staggers to his feet.
RANDY
Yeah, let's actualize that.
Bobbi restrains him with a hand to his chest.
BOBBI
Let me get rid of my drinks.
Randy slouches back into his seat.
RANDY
I'll be here. Embellishing my
fantasies.
Bobbi delivers her drinks. Starts for the bar when-
Sammy Wu steps into her path.
SAMMY
How about a dance?
Bobbi eases back cautiously.
She pats him on the cheek. Tries to move around him.
BOBBI
Easy, lover boy. Someone's ahead
of you.
Sammy grabs her arm.
SAMMY
I hate to wait.
BOBBI
(struggling)
Let go of me.
Randy grabs Sammy's arm.
RANDY
Want to dance with me?
Sammy drives his fist into Randy's stomach, doubling him
over. Randy grabs onto Sammy's arm as he falls against a
table, knocking over chairs and their occupants.
Sammy struggles to pull his arm free.
Randy struggles to regain his balance.
The table's occupants struggle to their feet.
Randy swings blindly, hits Sammy in the mouth, knocking him
down. Sammy is back on his feet as quick as a cat.
TWO BOUNCERS with trucheons step between them.
BOUNCER 1
(to Bobbi)
What's the problem?
BOBBI
(indicating Sammy)
This jerk started it.
BOUNCER 1
(to Sammy)
Why don't you call it a night?
Sammy licks blood from his cut lip. Assesses the
possibilities.
SAMMY
It ain't worth it.
Sammy pushes past them, straight for the exit.
Bouncer 1 placates patrons at the disturbed table.
BOUNCER 1
It's all over. Relax and enjoy the
show.
(to a waitress)
Cheri, bring this table a round on
the house.
(to Randy)
Why don't you call it a night?
(to Bobbi)
Same for you, Bobbi.
Bobbi steadies Randy.
Wraps a napkin around his bleeding knuckles.
BOBBI
Thanks for the help, but are you
sure you're cut out to be a hero?
RANDY
For you, I'd attack Cleveland.
EXT. ELECTRIC COMPANY PARKING LOT - NIGHT
Randy braces his damaged hand against his car.
Pokes his key at the lock and misses.
BOBBI
Need a ride?
RANDY
I'd love one.
Randy puts his arms around her and pulls her to his chest.
BOBBI
This hardly seems like the place
for me to show my appreciation.
Randy releases her and steps back.
RANDY
Sorry.
Bobbi tugs the keys from his hand.
Guides him toward the passenger side.
BOBBI
You could help a little.
EXT. RANDY'S APARTMENT PARKING LOT - NIGHT - RANDY'S CAR
Bobbi pulls the car into Randy's parking stall.
EXT. RANDY'S APARTMENT - NIGHT
Bobbi leans Randy against the wall and searches the keyring.
RANDY
The silver one with the holes in it.
Bobbi stretches over a cardboard box and unlocks the door.
She steps over the box into the apartment.
INT. RANDY'S APARTMENT - LIGHT
Randy trips over the box, tipping its contents onto the floor.
BOBBI
Very graceful.
RANDY
I move better with my blades on.
Want to see?
Bobbi kneels and picks up the spilled items.
BOBBI
Another time. Do you collect for
some charity?
RANDY
Huh?
Randy rises on his elbows and squints at the CD's and
clothing. He helps reload the box.
RANDY
Peggy, my "X" girlfriend, out grew
our relationship. Today was a
pretty lumpy day.
He places his hands on Bobbi's shoulders and smiles.
RANDY
Until I met you.
Bobbi looks uncomfortable with this situation.
BOBBI
Do you have anything to drink?
Randy lumbers to the refrigerator while she moves the box
clear of the door and closes it.
RANDY
(head in refrigerator)
Let's see. There's beer. Ahh...
(finds wine bottle)
And for you, Peggy's wine.
(hands to Bobbi)
Screw her.
Bobbi notices Randy's hand.
BOBBI
We better fix your hand.
INT. RANDY'S BATHROOM - LIGHT
Bobbi bandages Randy's hand while he sits on the commode
admiring her.
He brushes a strand of hair from her face.
RANDY
I like your face. You smell nice, too.
Bobbi pushes away Randy's hand.
BOBBI
I thought you were pining over
your lost love.
Randy takes a swig from his beer bottle.
RANDY
Love?... That stopped long ago.
She was someone I could talk to.
The last shred of my life.
BOBBI
You must have other friends.
Randy thinks about it. Wags his head.
RANDY
I know people that'll give me a
ride or loan me money till payday,
but no one to go my bail or hide
me from the police. I guess I come
on too strong. I'm big on
commitment. The ones I like shy
away. How about you? Are you in to
commitment?
BOBBI
Get a dog.
RANDY
Be nice to me. I've had a hard day.
Randy touches a scar along her left eyebrow.
BOBBI
A present from my father. He
practiced his barroom fighting on
me. After awhile I got pretty good
on my feet. I used to patch him
up. You should see my stitching.
RANDY
Maybe later. How did you get out
of boxing and into dancing?
BOBBI
I was rescued from my life in the
woods and introduced to the joys
of dancing at the Juicy Burger in
Seattle.
(gets dreamy
remembering the good
times)
At first it was great, my first
time in a big city, everyone was
nice to me. I began to look
forward to the future.
She takes a sip from a glass of wine.
RANDY
And then...
Bobbi's expression hardens. Discussions of her past are over.
She puts away the first aid kit.
BOBBI
I learned lesson one: look out for
yourself.
RANDY
No friends? No desires?
BOBBI
I can't afford them.
Randy pulls Bobbi into his arms.
RANDY
I don't require much care and
feeding.
Bobbi is reluctant to move further in that direction.
BOBBI
What do you have to eat?
RANDY
All things frozen.
INT. RANDY'S APARTMENT / DINING TABLE - LIGHT
Randy and Bobbi are sitting at the table. Arrayed before them
are the remains of a meal: spaghetti, picante sauce, etc.
Bobbi uses a plastic fork to spread chocolate frosting from
a plastic container onto a waffle square.
RANDY
(burps)
I'm not too sure beer goes with
waffles and chocolate frosting.
BOBBI
I think it was the picante sauce.
You should've had the salad
dressing with the spaghetti.
Randy gets another beer from the refrigerator.
RANDY
We'll take it out of the rotation
the next time.
BOBBI
What about you? How did you end up
here? No family to keep you in
Pittsburgh?
RANDY
(hesitates)
My mother and sister died in a car
accident six months ago. After
that, nothing seemed important.
BOBBI
So you followed Peggy to San
Francisco.
RANDY
Seemed right. She knew where she
was going and I didn't care. I
wanted time to think. Now I have
all the time I need.
Randy offers a toast.
RANDY
To a brand new life with a lot of
empty slots to fill.
They both drink.
RANDY
I can give you a class A slot
right up front, if you're
interested. I could walk you home
after work. Supply a shoulder to
cry on.
Their eyes lock while Bobbi thinks of the possibilities.
Bobbi stands and kisses Randy on the cheek.
BOBBI
Thanks for saving my honor. I've
got to go.
Randy clutches at her arm.
RANDY
Stay.... Please....
Bobbi removes his hand.
BOBBI
It doesn't seem right. Another
time.
Randy is desperate to keep the interlude going.
RANDY
How about my dance?
Bobbi is startled. Then all business.
BOBBI
The money?
Randy takes crumbled bills from his pocket.
Bobbi counts them and stuffs them in her pocket.
She takes a swig of Randy's beer.
Nods to a chair.
BOBBI
Sit there.
Randy collapses into the chair. His eyes on Bobbi.
Bobbi gets music on the CD and saunters over to Randy,
striping to her undergarments.
She straddles his lap and begins to dance.
BOBBI
Watch your hands.
As Bobbi rubs against Randy, he whispers something, unheard.
BOBBI
What?
RANDY
(whispered)
Hold me. Just for a second.
Bobbi hesitates, and then hugs Randy.
Takes his face in her hands and kisses him.
Randy drops his beer and wraps his arms around her. Standing
with her legs wrapped around his waist, he moves toward the
bedroom.
INT. RANDY'S BEDROOM - DAY
The PHONE RINGS. A lump under the blankets stirs. A hand
gropes for the phone, dragging the headset back under.
RANDY
Yooo...
PEGGY (TELEPHONE)
Randy, it's me... Peggy.
Randy sits up holding a silver bell earring. Notices his
bandaged hand. His throbbing mind searches for memories.
RANDY
Oh, Hi.
PEGGY (TELEPHONE)
I called your work and... I'm
sorry. It must've been a terrible
day.
Randy lurches to his feet and flexes his damaged hand.
RANDY
I survived, but I'm not sure all
my parts work.
PEGGY
Did you get your things? I left
them by the door.... It didn't
seem right to go in.
RANDY
Yeah.
PEGGY
I was wondering if I could come by
lunchtime to pick up my things.
(pause)
I mean, since you're not working.
RANDY
Sure. I'll wedge an opening into
my busy calendar.
Randy trudges to the kitchen. Discovers he's out of coffee.
He throws on some clothes. Cannot find his Pittsburgh
Steelers jacket, so goes without one.
He searches futilely for the car keys. Finally fetches a
spare set from the desk drawer and heads out.
EXT. RANDY'S APARTMENT PARKING LOT - DAY
Randy notices damage to the front fender of his car.
RANDY
I wasn't that drunk.
The keys are in the ignition and his Pittsburgh Steelers
jacket is on the passenger seat.
Curling his nose, he cleans vomit from the steering post with
a towel from the back of the car and gets in.
He throws the spare set of keys in the glove box.
INT. ELECTRIC COMPANY ENTRANCE - DIM LIGHT
Bouncer 1 stops Randy--now wearing his Steelers' jacket.
BOUNCER 1
We're not open for another hour.
RANDY
I want to talk to Bobbi.
BOUNCER 1
You can talk all you want
(pushes Randy out)
in an hour.
Reluctantly, Randy retreats, and then turns and leaves.
EXT. ELECTRIC COMPANY PARKING LOT - DAY
As Randy opens his car door, a dog's CHOKE CHAIN loops over
his head and is jerked tight around his neck.
Dropping his keys, Randy claws at the chain.
Sammy Wu rabbit punches him.
While Sammy and MARCO (a thug) drag Randy into a Lucky Time
Grocery van, Price scoops up his keys and jumps into his car.
There's a BANDAGE on Price's left hand.
Randy's car follows the van from the parking lot.
INT. SUSIE CHANG'S OFFICE - DAY
The office is furnished in a Chinese motif.
Randy, mouth taped, is tied to a chair.
Sammy, leaning against the desk, shakes out pepper sauce and
samples it.
Price empties Randy's pockets onto the desk.
Steps back and wipes his mouth. He's nervous, very nervous.
PRICE
What do you think she'll do, Sammy?
Ignoring Price, Sammy nudges Randy.
SAMMY
Hey, shithead, remember me?
PRICE
You told me those guys were good.
Shiiit, they weren't worth shit.
SAMMY
They kept you alive long enough to
run away.... You should have
brought the money though. Susie
won't be happy about that.
PRICE
The money. I don't even want to
think about the goddamn money.
They all turn toward a SOUND FROM THE DOOR.
DOUG OLSON (aka "Odd Job") enters. His eyes sweep the room.
He steps aside for SUSIE CHANG (30's). Susie, who is of
English descendent, survived the "curious" death of her
husband to take over his drug business. Vicious to begin
with, running the drug business has made her paranoid. Susie
dresses like the Dragon Lady in "Terry and the Pirates."
Susie sits at the desk. Her stare causes Sammy to get off her
desk and retreat a step.
JACK TURNER (aka Smiling Jack) enters, closes the door and
slouches against it. Smiling Jack likes hurting things.
Susie spears Price with her gaze.
SUSIE
Where's my money?
Price holds up his hand.
PRICE
The guy shot me.... I... I dropped
the bag.
SMILING JACK
Seems strange that he managed to
kill the others, but missed you.
PRICE
That's because I...
Price continues to move his lips but nothing comes out.
SUSIE
Go ahead. What were you going to
say?
Price realizes any answer is wrong. He indicates Randy.
PRICE
Jeez... He's the guy that did it. Ask
him. He'll tell you I had nothing to
do with it.
Susie spreads Randy's possessions with her fan and examines
the contents of Randy's wallet.
SUSIE
(dubious)
He doesn't look the type.
SAMMY
Maybe he's a quick learner.
SMILING JACK
Let's hear his side.
Smiling Jack rips the tape from Randy's mouth.
RANDY
I don't know what you're talking
about. I don't know anything about
any money.
Price slaps him.
PRICE
Son of a bitch. It was your car.
You were wearing that jacket.
RANDY
You're crazy. I didn't even...
(it dawns on him.)
The fender. Bobbi took my car.
PRICE
(to Susie)
See. I told you it was her wearing
a wig.
RANDY
That's why I went to the Electric
Company: to ask her what happened
to my car.
(nods to Sammy)
Ask him. He was with her last
night.
SMILING JACK
Maybe we're talking to the wrong
one.
Sammy and Smiling Jack eye each other like two fighters
waiting for the bell.
RANDY
Yeah, talk to him. I had nothing
to do with this.
SUSIE
If he talks again, cut out his
tongue.
Odd Job moves from behind Susie to stand over Randy.
SAMMY
If I set it up, Price would be dead.
SUSIE
That's what I keep asking myself.
Why aren't you dead?
SMILING JACK
Why don't we ask the bitch?
SUSIE
Get her.
(indicates Price with
her fan)
Have him pick her out.
Smiling Jack pushes Price out the door.
SMILING JACK
Let's go have some fun.
Susie throws Randy's wallet and keys to Sammy.
SUSIE
Check his place.
Susie waves her fan dismissively at Randy.
SUSIE
Get this piece of shit out of here.
Odd Job grabs the rear of Randy's chair and drags him out.
EXT. RANDY'S APARTMENT PARKING LOT - DAY
Clay is walking across the parking lot when a car pulls into
Randy's spot. Clay hesitates and then moves off.
INT. JEFFREY'S CAR - DAY
Peggy in the passenger seat. JEFFREY LANGDON, her new
boyfriend, is driving.
PEGGY
It's just like Randy to avoid this.
JEFFREY
You want me to come with you.
PEGGY
(emphatic)
No. This should only take a minute.
EXT. RANDY'S APARTMENT - DAY
Peggy, a bag hanging from her shoulder, stops before the door
which is open a crack. She pushes it open and steps in.
INT. RANDY'S APARTMENT - DAY
The apartment has been ripped apart.
Peggy surveys the carnage.
PEGGY
Randy?
Peggy moves to the bedroom.
INT. RANDY'S BEDROOM - LIGHT
Peggy sets her bag on the bed and heads for the bathroom.
INT. RANDY'S BATHROOM - LIGHT
As Peggy collects her toiletries, a CHOKE CHAIN loops over
her head. Toiletries fly. Sammy drags the struggling, clawing
Peggy back into the bedroom.
INT. RANDY'S BEDROOM - LIGHT
Sammy jerks Peggy up to his face--his hot breath on her face.
Sammy is wearing latex gloves.
SAMMY
Happy Birthday to me.
Peggy claws at the chain, fights desperately to get free.
SAMMY
That's good. Let's play.
Peggy drives her high heel into Sammy's foot.
Sammy eases the tension on the chain.
Peggy gets some fingers under the chain before Sammy jerks it
tight and throws her onto the bed.
SAMMY
Bitch.
Peggy kicks out, hitting a bookcase. A speaker tumbles off
and smashes through a window.
INT. JEFFREY'S CAR
At the sound of the window breaking, Jeffrey glances up from
his newspaper to see the speaker hanging by its wire.
He gets out and sprints toward Randy's apartment.
INT. RANDY'S BEDROOM
Swinging the chain, Sammy slams Peggy's head against the wall.
He releases the chain and Peggy collapses limp on the bed.
He flips her over onto her face and peels off her coat. Then
he rips off her blouse and flips her onto her back.
He attacks her skirt.
JEFFREY
What the...
Jeffrey pulls Sammy from Peggy. Grabs his lapels.
Prepares to throw him against the wall when...
Jeffrey gets a FUNNY EXPRESSION.
Jeffrey releases Sammy, steps back and stares down at the
knife sticking from his belly.
Sammy jerks the knife free and thrusts it in again, lifting
Jeffrey off his feet. Jeffrey doubles up over the knife.
Sammy tugs the knife out and pushes Jeffrey to the floor.
Sammy calmly wipes his knife on a bed sheet as he watches
Jeffrey writhe in pain and become still.
Putting the knife away, he notices a spot of blood on his
jacket. He kicks Jeffrey viciously.
SAMMY
Look what you did, shithead.
EXT. RANDY'S APARTMENT - DAY
Sammy leaves.
INT. RANDY'S BEDROOM
Jeffrey in fetal position on the floor, his empty wallet
covering his face.
Peggy, her clothes torn off, sprawls on the bed her throat
cut. The contents of her purse are sprinkled across the bed.
Clay enters. Stifles the urge to vomit.
CLAY
Jesus Christ.
Careful not to get blood on himself, he fishes Jeffrey's keys
from his pocket and leaves.
INT. SUSIE CHANG'S OFFICE - DAY
Price fidgets before Susie.
PRICE
She didn't show up at work.
SMILING JACK
Her clothes were gone from her
apartment.
Sammy enters and stands next to Smiling Jack.
SAMMY
Nothing in his apartment.
Smiling Jack dabs a wet spot on Sammy's coat.
SMILING JACK
Trouble?
SAMMY
I was interrupted.
SUSIE
Dead people won't get me my money.
SAMMY
It's another city. The police will
never tie them together.
SMILING JACK
(nods to the next
room)
As long as he doesn't talk.
SUSIE
(to Sammy)
Put his body someplace where they
can find it. And do it so people
will remember.
EXT. JUNKYARD - DAY
Randy's car, followed by the Lucky Time Grocery van, drives
past mountains of metal and stops at the edge of a clearing.
Price gets out of Randy's car.
The side door of the van opens. DUFFY and RICK (nondescript
thugs) drag a struggling Randy out. Randy's mouth is taped,
but his eyes keep moving, seeking escape.
Sammy takes everything from Randy's wallet, leaving only the
driver's license, and stuffs it in Randy's jacket.
SAMMY
We lucked out. It's a great day
for a picnic.
A dilapidated pickup parks behind the Lucky Time Grocery van.
A gnarled OLD MAN gets out. He looks Randy up and down.
OLD MAN
Tie him up. Leave them a little
room to work.
SAMMY
Move his car into the open and tie
him to the door frame.
Price moves the car to the center of the clearing.
Duffy and Rick tie the thrashing Randy to the passenger side
door post.
PRICE
Jeez, I can't watch this.
Price, looking sick, gets into the back of the van.
The Old Man gets four Rottweilers out of the pickup.
OLD MAN
If I were you, I'd get in the car.
They ain't too particular once
they get worked up.
They move to comply.
INT. LUCKY TIME GROCERY VAN - DAY
Sammy, sitting next to Duffy in the driver's seat, watches
Randy thrash around.
SAMMY
This should be fun.
Suddenly, Clay Sinclair appears.
He limps to Randy's car and jumps in.
Sammy leans out of the van.
SAMMY
Release the damn dogs.
At the Old Man's command, the dogs streak toward Randy,
barking and growling.
EXT. JUNKYARD - DAY - RANDY'S CAR
Clay starts the engine.
CLAY
Hang on.
The car starts, pulling Randy along.
Randy hops, shoving his legs through the passenger window.
The lead dog leaps for him. It's teeth close on his pants.
The pants give, dropping the dog with cloth in its teeth.
The other dogs bounce off the car and continue the chase.
INT. LUCKY TIME GROCERY VAN - DAY
Sammy jabs his hand at Duffy who hands him his AUTOMATIC as
Randy's car roars by.
The dogs are still chasing, but losing ground.
Randy has managed to work most of his legs into the car.
Sammy sticks his head out of the window and FIRES.
The shot nicks Randy in the ear.
SAMMY
Get after him.
Duffy kicks the car in gear, throws it into a spinning turn.
RANDY'S POV - A narrow gate looms.
It's going to scrape him off the side of the car.
He brings his face to his hands. Rips the tape from his mouth.
RANDY
I won't fit! Give me room.
With the gate roaring up and Sammy firing, Randy tries to
squirm his way into the car.
Closer, Closer.
Randy slides in as the car roars through the gate.
The STEELERS PATCH is ripped from his jacket.
The van plows through the pack of dogs. Flying dogs.
Roars through the gate.
The Old Man drops next to a dying dog and, cradling it, cries.
Whimpering and limping the other dogs watch.
EXT. GRAVEL ROAD - DAY
Randy's car roars by, followed by the van.
INT. RANDY'S CAR - MOVING
Clay reaches across and cuts the rope holding Randy to the
door post. Randy drops into the seat and holds his hands so
Clay can cut them free.
Blood covers Randy's right ear and trickles down his neck.
RANDY
Who the hell are you?
Clay pockets the knife and pulls out his gun--larger caliber
automatic--and shoves it at Randy.
CLAY
God. Shoot'em.
A SHOT spider webs the rear window, rips through the seat
next to Randy's head and punches through the roof above the
windshield.
CLAY
Shoot.
Randy turns and FIRES. The recoil kicks his hand up. The gun
DISCHARGES through the roof.
CLAY
Jesus Christ, shoot them, not us.
Sammy's next shot blows out the rear window.
Randy braces the gun with both hands and fires two quick
shots. The gun's slide locks back.
Clay claws cartridges from his pocket. As he hands them to
Randy the car hits a pothole, flinging them into hiding
places.
CLAY
Start praying.
The van closes the gap.
Randy grabs his pack from the back.
Assembles the PAINTBALL GUN.
The chase moves onto the main road, weaving through traffic.
CLAY
What are you going to do? Paint'em
to death.
Randy dumps paintballs into the hopper, turns and fires.
EXT. LUCKY TIME GROCERY VAN / MOVING - DAY
Paintballs splatter across the van's windshield.
The van slows and the wipers come on.
The paintballs keep coming.
INT. LUCKY TIME GROCERY VAN / MOVING - DAY
Sammy shoves a fresh magazine into his gun.
SAMMY
Stay with them.
Duffy keeps moving his head, searching for a clear spot
through the windshield.
DUFFY
I can't see.
Sammy fires out the side window.
SAMMY
Stick your head out.
Duffy sticks his head out.
EXT. LUCKY TIME GROCERY VAN - DAY - MOVING
A stream of paintballs hammer into Duffy's face.
The van veers, side swipes a car, jumps a curb, plows through
a newspaper vending machine, through the parking lot of a quick
mart and out onto a side street where it screechs to a halt.
The driver's door opens. Sammy kicks Duffy out.
Duffy rolls over twice and lays, his hands to his face.
The van backs up, does a 180, and blasts onto the main
street, scattering cars.
INT. RANDY'S CAR - DAY
The car coasts down an alley. Randy checks the road behind.
RANDY
We lost them.
Clay stops behind Jeffrey's car, a metal hulk on blocks.
CLAY
Jesus Christ. You can't keep
anything without some fucking
bastard ripping it off.
RANDY
Who the hell are you?
Clay picks up his gun and brings it down hard on Randy's
head. Randy collapses in a heap against the door.
INT. LUCKY TIME GROCERY VAN / MOVING - DAY
Sammy driving. Price in the passenger seat.
SAMMY
Who the hell was that guy?
PRICE
I know that limp.
Sammy grabs Price's collar.
SAMMY
You know this shithead?
PRICE
Clint something... No Clay...
Clay Sinclair. A loser. He hangs
around the club trying to hustle
a buck. He deals some to the
softball crowd.
(frantic)
You let the guy get away. Susie
wont't like that. What are we
going to do?
SAMMY
Find her money.
PRICE
How we going to do that?
SAMMY
Find the bitch.
EXT. DESERTED DIRT ROAD - DAY - RANDY'S CAR
Clay pulls open the passenger door and Randy falls out.
Randy's arms and legs are tied, his ear covered with blood.
He awakens as Clay drags him to a ditch and dumps him in.
Clay plants a foot on Randy's chest.
Sticks his gun against his forehead.
CLAY
Welcome back, sunshine. Where's my
money?
Randy tries to slide away from the gun.
RANDY
I don't know anything about the
money.
Clay shoves the gun under Randy's chin, forcing his head back.
CLAY
Don't give me that crap. You and
Bobbi set me up.
RANDY
If I helped her, what am I doing
here?
Clay steps back, thinks about it, points the gun at Randy.
CLAY
You're wasting my time. Say
goodbye, Gracie.
RANDY
Wait, wait. I know where she went.
Clay decocks the gun.
CLAY
Where?
RANDY
Let me go first.
Clay cocks the gun.
CLAY
Jesus Christ, I toasted two guys,
the whole fucking world's coming
after me and you give me this shit.
RANDY
Seattle.
CLAY
Where in Seattle?
RANDY
I'll tell you that in the middle
of a large shopping mall after you
cut me loose.
(when Clay doesn't
answer)
Do you want the money?
Clay stuffs the gun in his waist band. Pulls Randy up.
CLAY
They ain't going to fry me any
crisper for popping a third guy.
You understand?
RANDY
Totally.
Clay drags the hopping Randy to the car.
INT. ELECTRIC COMPANY - DIM LIGHT
Sammy and Price are sitting at a table talking to a Waitress.
In the b.g. the usual strobing lights and sounds assault the
senses. Sammy pushes a fifty dollar bill toward the Waitress.
WAITRESS
Seattle.
SAMMY
Seattle's a big town.
WAITRESS
She mentioned a place... But I
can't remember.
Sammy pushes across another bill.
SAMMY
Think... hard.
INT. SUSIE CHANG'S OFFICE - DAY
Sammy before Susie. Smiling Jack and Odd Job look on.
SUSIE
Take a plane, I want you to get
there first.
SMILING JACK
What about Price?
SAMMY
He knows all the players.
Susie thinks about it.
SUSIE
Take him. I'll call some people
and tell them to keep their eyes
open for them.
Sammy leaves.
SMILING JACK
You trust them?
SUSIE
I don't trust anyone. Take some
men and get up there fast.
INT. RANDY'S CAR - DAY - MOVING
Coverage of Giant baseball on the radio.
CLAY
...Insurance. I figured if
anything went wrong they'd be
looking for you.
It would have worked, too, if that
bitch hadn't jacked my car and the
money.
RANDY
They were feeding me to a pack of
dogs because you wanted insurance.
CLAY
Hey, don't whine to me. Bobbi
picked you. It's your own fault.
If you hadn't played hide the
salami...
(looks Randy over)
You were a good pick. We're a lot
alike.
RANDY
You're out of your mind.
CLAY
Bullshit. We both love to hang it
out on the hairy edge, whatever it
takes to win. Admit it. This has
been the biggest kick you ever had.
RANDY
I don't kill people.
CLAY
Jesus Christ. Two burned out
fiends working for their next
blast. They'd rip out Mary Poppins
throat for a couple of pops. With
the whole fucking world coming
down on you, you'd be surprised
what you'd do to save your ass.
RANDY
Never.
THE RADIO (V.O.)
That concludes the Giants
broadcast. Here's Jenny Thompson
with the news.
Innocuous news as Clay harangues the Giants.
CLAY
Christ, the damn Giants couldn't
win if --
THE RADIO (V.O.)
...The police are searching for
Randy Cage, the owner of the
apartment, to question him about
the two grisly murders. The names
of the two dead are being
withheld...
Clay, suddenly nervous, checks the rear view mirror.
CLAY
We got to get off the road.
RANDY
(shocked, confused)
My apartment?
CLAY
Some bitch on the bed. A guy
curled up on the floor. Blood all
over the place. Christ, I thought
I was going to puke.
RANDY
Peggy? She had a boyfriend? You
knew about them?
CLAY
How do you think I found you? I
followed the guy trying to feed
you to the dogs.
(laughs)
Even the police are after you now.
RANDY
They'll never believe I had
anything to do with this.
CLAY
Yeah, sure. They'll feed you to
the news jerks like sushi. The
police don't matter anyway. Once
word gets out you ripped off Susie
for half a million, every asshole
in the world will try carving a
piece of it out of your ass.
RANDY
They saw you. Your ass is fresh
meat, too.
CLAY
They saw Clay Sinclair. I got the
address of a guy in Dallas who'll
make me a new person for five
thousand. I knew places in Mexico,
South America, even Australia
where no one could find me. Your
only chance is to team up with me.
I'll give you Bobbi's share.
RANDY
Team up! You've got me tied up.
You were going to kill me.
CLAY
I was only trying to scare you. It
worked didn't it? When are you
going to understand noboby gives
a rat's ass what happens to us. We
have to look out for each other.
EXT. PARKING LOT OF GIANT HARDWARE STORE - DAY
Clay spray paints the driver's fender and door a garish color.
A piece of plastic covers the hatchback window frame.
The car sports Arizona license plates.
Clay throws the paint can away and gets into the car.
INT. RANDY'S CAR / MOVING - NIGHT
Clay pulls the car into a rest area and parks it.
He duct tapes Randy's neck to the door post.
Reclines his seat and kills the light.
INT. RANDY'S CAR - NIGHT
RANDY
Did she suffer?
CLAY
Huh, who?
RANDY
Peggy.
CLAY
Are you kidding? He beat the fuck
out of her, raped her and cut her
throat. What do you think?
A red glow as Clay takes a deep drag on his roach. He offers
it to Randy, who does his best to wag his head no.
CLAY
When I go, I want it to be quick
and clean.
RANDY
What are you going to do to Bobbi?
CLAY
All I want is the god damn money.
One clean shot at getting back on
top.
(pause)
I was headed for the majors. I
could have been one of the great
ones. Until a jerk pulled in front
of my motorcycle. Christ, one
second I had it made, the next I
was another piece of shit,
scratching out a living.
(flick roach out the
window)
Welcome aboard. Your life just
went down the crapper.
RANDY
Life? I managed to destroy it all
by myself. Driving my mother and
sister home from a movie.... I
must have dozed off. I awoke in
the hospital with no family. Now,
because of me, my girlfriend is
dead. I lied when I said I didn't
kill anyone. Over the last six
months I've managed to kill
everyone who meant anything to me.
CLAY
Hey. I'm your salvation. Help me
get the money and I'll give you
enough to start a new life.
RANDY
You're on. Cut me loose.
CLAY
I'm not crazy. I'll cut you loose
when you show me Bobbi.
RANDY
You can keep the money. All I want
is the guy who killed Peggy. I
want to put him where he can't
hurt anyone else.
CLAY
How are you going to do that?
You've got no evidence. The police
won't listen to you. That is if
you live long enough to reach
them. The dog guy will cut you up
just to watch you bleed.
RANDY
I'll find a way.
CLAY
A regular caped crusader.
INT. RANDY'S CAR STOPPED AT GAS STATION - DAWN
A blanket covers Randy's taped arms and legs.
Clay retrieves money from Randy's pack.
Counts out some and pokes it at the Attendent, stuffing a few
bills into his own pocket.
CLAY
Give me eight bucks.
The Attendent takes the money and begins to pump.
RANDY
That isn't getting us to Seattle.
CLAY
I've got a friend in Eugene.
EXT. RANDY'S CAR PARKED IN ALLEY - DAY
The car is parked behind a Dumpster.
Randy is tied and gagged on the reclined passenger seat.
Clay stands over him in the open door.
CLAY
Enjoy the scenery.
Clay drops the blanket over Randy.
INT. MILLER CARPET SHOWROOM - DAY
MACK RICE (50's, lean and mean) works a female CLIENT while
her SON plays with his toy car on the floor next to her.
HAL, warehouse type, studies Mack's technique.
MACK
Of course, nothing's one hundred
percent stain resistant, but for
the extra dollar a yard
(pokes a carpet
sample)
this sure comes close. And it's a
nice color.
Hal notices Clay limp in and nudges Mack.
CLIENT
I'm not sure.... I better talk it
over with my husband.
The Client gathers her Son and moves to door.
MACK
Tell you what. I'll put a hold on
the carpet for twenty-four hours.
(as she exits)
If you order by tomorrow, I'll
upgrade the padding at no charge.
Smiling, Mack comes around the counter to greet Clay.
MACK
Hey, Clay. What brings you back to
this piss hole?
Mack puts his arm around Clay's shoulder and escorts him back
into the warehouse.
MACK
Let's have a drink.
They pass mountains of carpet rolls.
CLAY
How are the Ems doing?
MACK
In the toilet. They could use you
at short stop.
EXT. RANDY'S CAR - DAY
Randy squirms into the back of the car and uses a piece of
glass to cut through the duct tape binding his wrist.
He rips the tape from his mouth. Frees his feet. Opens the
car door. Swings his legs out and...
Is smashed in the face as he straightens up.
He slumps back on to the seat.
ERNIE stuffs his gun in his belt.
Lifts Randy onto his shoulder.
INT. MACK'S OFFICE - DAY
Mack sits behind a desk and takes a bottle of whiskey off the
shelf behind him. Clay gets a couple of paper cups from the
dispenser next to the water cooler. As Mack pours:
MACK
You could have made it to the
majors if it wasn't for--
CLAY
That's over.
Clay downs his drink. Mack takes a sip and studies Clay.
MACK
So what brings you back? You need
some shit?
CLAY
Passing through. I need a couple
of hundred. I can get it back to
you in a week.
Mack reaches into the desk drawer.
MACK
Sure. No problem.
Mack's hand comes out with a .45. He motions Clay to sit.
MACK
Let's talk.
Clay slides into the seat and pours himself another drink.
CLAY
Then you give me the money?
MACK
I got a call saying you were worth
ten thousand dollars. Why would
someone pay ten thousand for you?
CLAY
I can't imagine.
Ernie enters and dumps Randy on the floor.
Hal follows. He frisks Clay. Takes his gun.
MACK
Take'em to my cabin.
(to Clay)
Give'im the keys.
Clay takes out the keys and tosses them to Hal.
CLAY
I'll remember this.
MACK
(takes a sip)
Sure, take notes. Get'em out of
here.
INT. MILLER CARPET VAN - DIM LIGHT - MOVING
Randy and Clay, tied hand and foot, facing each other.
Randy nudges Clay with his foot.
RANDY
Is this guy a GOOD friend or a so-
so friend?
Clay ignores Randy.
While Clay hustles Ernie, Randy tips over a pail of tools
(carpet scraps deaden the sound). Spreads them with his feet.
CLAY
Hey, Ernie, how'd you like to make
some money.
ERNIE
Yeah, you have so much you had to
hit on Mack.
CLAY
The money's in Seattle. Take us
there and I'll give you ten
thousand.
ERNIE
Shit, I help you, Mack'll cut my
dick off.
CLAY
He'd have to find you first. With
ten... hell, make it twenty
thousand, you can dig a deep hole.
ERNIE
How do I know you have the money?
Randy spots a carpet knife. He shimmies over until he gets
his hands on it.
CLAY
Keep us tied up. If we don't
deliver, give us back to Mack.
(when Ernie doesn't
respond)
What are you giving up? You can
always get another shit job.
Randy frees his hands and starts working on his feet.
Clay motions for Randy to free him.
ERNIE
What about Hal? He's following us.
CLAY
I'll give you another ten. You
decide what happens to him.
Randy grabs Ernie's hair, pulls his head back and puts the
carpet knife to his throat.
RANDY
Stop the truck.
ERNIE
Fuck you.
Ernie draws his gun. Brings it back over his head and FIRES.
Randy ducks.
The shot rips through the sleeve of Clay's jacket.
Clay frantically squirms away, seeking cover.
Randy releases Ernie's hair and grabs his gun hand wrist.
The van swerves back and forth across the narrow road.
The muzzle aligns again on Clay, who screams an expletive and
rolls out of the way.
Ernie FIRES. This shot bursts a can of solvent next to Clay,
spraying it over the inside of the van.
ERNIE
Let go or we'll crash.
Randy runs the blade along Ernie's wrist, drawing blood.
RANDY
Drop it, or I'll cut it off.
Swearing, Ernie releases the gun.
When Randy grabs for it Ernie swerves the van, knocking Randy
off his feet.
HONKING from Hal in Randy's car behind.
Randy shoves the gun against Ernie's head.
RANDY
Stop the van.
Ernie pushes down on the accelerator, sending the van
careening down a twisting DOWNHILL section.
ERNIE
You shoot me, we're all dead.
RANDY
I'm already dead.
Randy FIRES at Ernie's right foot.
Primal scream of pain from Ernie.
Ernie jerks his foot from the accelerator.
ERNIE
You shot my fucking foot.
Ernie pulls a hand off the wheel to cradle his foot.
The van enters a sharp turn.
RANDY
Hit the brakes.
Randy stuffs the gun in his pocket and grabs the wheel.
He steers the van into the curve, but it's too late.
The van launches off the road shoulder and bounds across a
clear cut, dodging stumps and plowing through debris.
Randy clings desperately to the wheel.
Ernie bounces from seat to roof, BANGING his head.
RANDY
Brake.
Ernie grabs the wheel and jams his foot onto the brake.
The van skids into a tree stump.
EXT. MILLER CARPET VAN - SUNSET
The van lurches sideways and executes one complete roll
before slamming to rest against a stump, right side up.
The rear doors rupture open, flinging carpet and tools out.
INT. MILLER CARPET VAN
Randy is on top of Clay.
CLAY
Cut me free, we've got to get out
before it blows.
Randy grabs Clay's jacket. Drags him out the back of the van.
EXT. MILLER CARPET VAN - SUNSET
Ernie opens the driver's door and falls out.
Randy drags Clay to a tree stump and props him against it.
Ernie drops against a stump next to them and tears off his
shoe and sock. Holding his foot, he rocks back and forth,
moaning to himself.
Flames appear around the van and slowly grow, illuminating
the scene and casting deep shadows.
CLAY
Jesus Christ, cut me free.
Hal runs up. Kneels next to Ernie.
HAL
What the hell happened?
ERNIE
The son of a bitch shot me.
Randy sticks his gun to the back of Hal's head.
RANDY
Down on the ground.
Hal stands and turns in one motion, brushing Randy's gun hand
aside as Randy FIRES.
He delivers a forearm to Randy's face, knocking him down.
ERNIE
Kill the son of a bitch.
Hal tugs his gun from his belt.
EXPLOSION -- The van explodes, spraying flame and debris.
The blast blows Hal over a prone Randy. Drops him face down.
Still holding his gun, Hal pushes himself onto his hands and
knees, and attempts to shake the fog from his brain.
Randy gropes on the ground for his gun. His fingers close on
it as Hal staggers to his feet and raises his gun to fire.
Randy dives and rolls as Hal FIRES and misses.
Randy FIRES, hitting Hal in the side.
Hal staggers back a step and places his hand over his belly.
He drops his gun and examines his blood smeared hand.
HAL
(amazed)
You shot me.
Randy hits him on the head with the gun butt.
Hal sags to his knees. Randy prepares to hit him again, but
Hal drops unconscious, face down.
Randy retrieves his car keys from his pocket.
The flames are dying down.
CLAY (O.S.)
Look out.
Randy turns and sidesteps an attack by a club wielding Ernie.
RANDY
On the ground.
He wags Ernie down with his gun. Ernie complies, swearing.
Randy unties Clays feet.
CLAY
Jesus Christ, that was something.
He hauls Clay up and pushes him toward his car.
CLAY
What the hell you doing? Untie my
hands.
RANDY
I'm taking you to the police.
In b.g. Ernie searches the ground for Hal's gun.
CLAY
Are you fucking crazy? Even if
they believed you, they can't give
you back your life. She's after
us. Our only chance is to get the
money and run.
RANDY
This isn't about me or getting my
life back. It's about getting the
animal that killed Peggy.
Clay digs in his heels. Shrugs free of Randy.
He retreats a step and picks up a stick.
CLAY
Jesus H. Christ. If you want to
get him, do it yourself. The
police aren't going to do shit.
RANDY
You saw him leaving my apartment.
That should be enough to get them
looking for him.
Randy grabs for Clay, but he swings his stick.
Randy steps back, dodging the blow.
CLAY
I'm not going to jail. I'll give
you half the money. A quarter of
a million. Think about it.
Ernie FIRES.
ERNIE
You son of a bitch.
Randy swirls to face Ernie.
Clay limps away into the darkness.
Ernie FIRES twice missing Randy.
Returning fire, Randy retreats behind a stump.
When his gun clicks empty, he throws it at Ernie.
Randy glances at where Clay disappeared into the darkness,
and then runs toward his car with Ernie firing at him.
EXT. QUICKY MART / TELEPHONE - DARK
Randy punches in numbers and listens to it ring.
A police car pulls in, parks next to Randy's car. The cop
glances at him and his car, hesitates, then enters the store.
INT. JIM'S KITCHEN - LIGHT
Jim fishes a beer from the refrigerator when the phone RINGS.
JIM
(yelled)
I'll get it.
(into phone)
Make it fast.
Holding the headset to his ear with his shoulder, he pops
open his beer and takes a sip.
He expels the beer in a gush.
His expression changes to object fear.
He peeks down the hall, moves closer to the wall phone and
responds in a nervous whisper.
JIM
Randy, why did you do it?
EXT. QUICKY MART / TELEPHONE - DARK
RANDY
Do what? I didn't do anything.
Through the window Randy watches the cop go to the restroom.
JIM (TELEPHONE)
The police found the code on your
computer. They think you're part
of the Mafia. God, they're
questioning everyone. If they find
out about me... I should never
have let you get me involved.
RANDY
(shocked)
They're your friends. You came to me.
JIM (TELEPHONE)
God, Randy, I got a wife and kid.
Don't drag me into this.
(starts to hang up,
then adds)
Don't call me again.
Phone click.
Stunned, Randy hangs up the phone.
INT. JUICY BURGER - LIGHT
Pulsing lights and blaring music greet Sammy and Price.
A sparse, oafish crowd watch the show with little interest.
PRICE
With all that money, why would she
come back to this dump?
SAMMY
Let's ask someone.
They size up the bouncer and dive into the milieu, settling
in at the bar.
BARTENDER
What'll it be?
Sammy motions for Price to go first.
PRICE
A beer.
SAMMY
Lime Rickey. I want to taste the
gin.
BARTENDER
It'll dissolve your fillings.
Sammy surveys the place, his gaze settling on TONY BIMBO
holding court to a couple of women. His brother, DIMITRI, and
bodyguard, SANTO, guard the edges.
Tony, mid-forties, is swarthy, built like a bull and sporting
a handlebar moustache and a ugly scar running from ear to
chin just under the jaw line.
SAMMY
Who's the guy in the corner?
The Bartender slides the drinks in front of them.
BARTENDER
Tony Bimbo, the owner.
Sammy arranges a stack of bills on the bar.
SAMMY
I'm looking for a dancer who used
to work here. Named Bobbi. You
remember her?
Bartender peels some bills and moves to the cash register.
BARTENDER
They slide through here faster
than shit through a sick duck. I
wouldn't remember her, if she was
sucking my dick.
Sammy shakes hot sauce into his drink. Takes a sip.
WAITRESS (O.S.)
Why are you looking for Bobbi?
Price and Sammy turn to see a knock out waitress wearing a
brassiere and panties, fluorescencing a lime green.
Sammy stuffs a bill into her brassiere.
SAMMY
You know Bobbi?
She twines around Sammy. Whispers hotly into his ear.
WAITRESS
No, but I can make you forget her.
Sammy grabs her hair and kisses her. Peels her off.
SAMMY
I wish you could.
WAITRESS
I know who might know her.
SAMMY
Who?
Sammy starts to stuff another bill, but she intercepts it.
WAITRESS
Alice. She isn't here.
Sammy hands her another bill.
WAITRESS
She has a place on Terry.
Sammy grabs her behind and pulls her to him--face to face.
SAMMY
Let's keep this talk to ourselves.
WAITRESS
What talk?
Sammy and Price finish their drinks and leave.
PRICE
We going to check her out?
SAMMY
Patience. I don't want to tip our
hand until we have someone to
watch her.
PRICE
Jeez, what if we can't find her?
SAMMY
Think positive.
INT. VIDEO GAME ARCADE - DAY
Carrying a gym bag, Bobbi weaves her way across the floor to
a PHOTO BOOTH. She pumps money into the slot, steps into the
booth and pulls the curtain closed.
INT. PHOTO BOOTH - LIGHT
Bobbi opens the gym bag on her lap, pulls out packets of
money and displays them. She presents a cold, emotionless
face to the camera.
EXT. PARKING LOT - DAY - RANDY'S CAR
Randy parks his car and retrieves the money envelope from
under the floor mat.
Wearing inline skates and pack, he skates off.
INT. SAMMY'S CAR - DAY
The car is parked across the street from the Juicy Burger.
Sammy is talking into a cellular phone.
SAMMY
Don't give me that bullshit about
forming a base. You said it was
going straight up.
(listens)
Hold your dick. I'll get the
goddamn money.
Sammy hangs up as Price climbs in behind the wheel and hands
him a coffee.
PRICE
Sandy said a soccer team stopped
by last night. We get that crowd
coming by, we've got it made.
Sammy shakes pepper sauce into his coffee.
SAMMY
(disinterested)
Practically a franchise business.
Why do you keep throwing your
money down that hole?
PRICE
What do you mean? To be the boss.
Nobody to tell me what to do.
SAMMY
My old man had a gardening
business. He mowed the lawns and
kissed the asses of all the big
shots. It made me sick to watch
him take shit from them in their
expensive suits. Being boss ain't
worth jack. I want to be the guy
with the money. They have all the
power.
PRICE
Was your father happy? That's what
matters isn't it?
SAMMY
He had an accident. Spilled
gasoline on himself and burned to
death. My old lady's happy. She
married the guy that owned the
restaurant where she worked.
EXT. JUICY BURGER - DAY
Randy, cleaned up and wearing new clothes, skates up.
INT. SAMMY'S CAR - DAY
Price nudges Sammy who glances up from a business magazine
purloined from the airline. They watch Randy enter the Bar.
PRICE
For someone who doesn't know what
the hell is going on, he seems to
be finding his way around.
SAMMY
Lucky.
(Sammy looks around)
Where's the other guy?
Price looks around. Opens the car door.
PRICE
Why don't we go ask him.
Sammy grabs his collar and hauls him back in.
SAMMY
Let's sit and watch.
Price shrugs loose.
PRICE
Sure... I was only going to watch
him from the bar.
INT. JUICY BURGER
Randy selects a table with a view of the door.
A waitress is on him before he sits.
RANDY
A beer and a menu.
INT. SAMMY'S CAR - DAY
A car pulls into the Juicy Burger parking lot.
Bobbi gets out.
PRICE
Look who's here.
INT. JUICY BURGER
Bobbi waves to the Bouncer and sits at the bar.
BOBBI
Give me a Scotch.
She places a bill on the bar.
BARTENDER
Long time, Bobbi... Where you been?
BOBBI
Down South.
Bartender pours her a drink and slides it before her.
BARTENDER
A couple of guys were looking for
you today.
BOBBI
(nervous)
What did they look like?
BARTENDER
Talker looked like someone in a
Kung Fu movie. I wouldn't want him
looking for me.
Bobbi throws down another bill.
BOBBI
Thanks.
EXT. JUICY BURGER - DAY
A Lucky Time Grocery van pulls up behind Sammy's car.
Smiling Jack gets out.
While Sammy and Smiling Jack talk, Price and the others open
the side door and check weapons.
SAMMY
The shithead's in there with the
bitch. No sign of the guy that
pulled his ass out of the dog's
mouth.
SMILING JACK
Susie's bringing him up.
SAMMY
She's coming here?
SMILING JACK
This fuck up went to the top of
her "A" list.
INT. JUICY BURGER
Bobbi watches Tony Bimbo's table, gathering courage.
She downs her drink and heads for it.
She stands before Bimbo's table, a hand in her jacket.
Bimbo's face brightens.
BIMBO
Bobbi... It takes a weight from my
soul to see you. My heart ached
with worry.
Bobbi tosses the arcade pictures onto the table.
BOBBI
I've got the money.
Bimbo studies the pictures, smiles and nods to Santo.
BIMBO
What am I thinking. Santo, give
Bobbi your seat. Fetch her a drink.
(to Bobbi)
Scotch isn't it?
Santo gets to his feet. Moves to assist Bobbi.
Bobbi pulls a GUN and points it at Bimbo.
BOBBI
If he touches me, I'll blow a hole
through your greasy gut.
Bimbo pushes the women away.
BIMBO
Everyone leave us.
Suppressing his anger, Bimbo waits for the others to leave.
BIMBO
You threaten me. You embarrass me
in front of my friends.
(sigh of disgust)
I took you from your filth
infested life and made you a woman
and you threaten me.
BOBBI
Cut the shit. I want Stefan.
BIMBO
Give me the money and I will have
Christina bring him.
BOBBI
Bullshit. You bring Stefan to me.
BIMBO
(shocked)
You stab at my heart. You do not
trust me?
BOBBI
I trust you to screw me, if I give
you the chance.
BIMBO
(all business)
I will have to see the money, first.
BOBBI
Pier 52, noon tomorrow.
BIMBO
The ferry?
Bobbi retreats a step. Puts the gun in her pocket.
BOBBI
If you try anything, I'll kill
you.
Bobbi turns and heads for the exit.
EXT. JUICY BURGER - DAY
Bobbi runs to her car and climbs in.
INT. BOBBI'S CAR - DAY
Before she can start the car, Randy pushes her across the
bench seat with his pack, and gets behind the wheel.
Bobbi, stunned, freezes for a second. Then
She pokes her GUN in Randy's side.
BOBBI
Get out or I'll shoot.
Randy backs the car out and shoves it into drive.
RANDY
Shouldn't you point it at them?
BOBBI
Huh?
Bobbi looks up to see --
Smiling Jack and Sammy blocking their path, weapons drawn.
BOBBI
Oh, shit.
Randy accelerates at them, intent on hitting Sammy.
RANDY
You better duck.
They both duck as Smiling Jack and Sammy open FIRE.
Bullets shatter the windshield, take a chuck out of the
steering wheel, and mess up everything: side windows, etc.
Sammy dives behind a Dumpster.
EXT. BOBBI'S CAR - DAY
The car brushes the Dumpster, knocking off everything
sticking out.
Sammy rolls onto his belly. FIRES, blowing out a rear tire.
The car grazes a telephone pole, ripping up its side, and
heads for the Lucky Time Grocery van.
Price and the others scatter.
The car glances off the van and heads down the street, sparks
flying from the rim of the flat tire.
Smiling Jack and his "SWAT" team pile into the van.
Sammy takes a final shot and signals the van to follow them.
INT. BOBBI'S CAR - MOVING
Randy fights to keep the car going straight.
Bobbi glances back at the van.
BOBBI
Can't you go faster?
RANDY
Not unless you get out and push.
Besides I don't want to lose them.
BOBBI
Are you crazy? They're trying to
kill us.
RANDY
You already killed me. Where is
the police station?
BOBBI
Police! You're crazy, if- Look out!
The van pulls along side.
Marco sticks a shotgun out the window.
Randy hits the brakes. Marco FIRES.
The blast tears a hole through the hood of the car.
Smoke pours through the hole and back into the car.
The van swerves and slides to a halt blocking the car.
Randy throws the car in reverse.
Sammy's car is coming up fast to block them.
Randy slams it into drive, whips the wheel, and drives into
an alley barely wider than the car.
The car snowplows garbage cans and trash ahead of it.
Cans fly over the top of the car.
Ahead trash cans and a chain link fence block the way.
BOBBI
Shit.
RANDY
I'll make a hole.
The car smashes into the fence and grinds to a halt.
The fence buckles, but holds.
Trash cans fly into the air and rain down on the car.
Sammy's car turns into the alley and stops.
BOBBI
Now what do we do?
Randy tosses his pack through the broken windshield.
Climbs onto the hood.
Smoke billows and swirls around him.
RANDY
Get out and walk.
EXT. BOBBI'S CAR - DAY
Randy helps Bobbi out and gives her a hand over the fence.
Her large canvas handbag catches on the fence and is torn
from her hand. She picks it up and disappears around a corner.
Bullets whiz by forcing Randy to duck.
Randy heaves his pack over the fence and follows it.
Picking up his pack, he spots things that spilled from
Bobbi's handbag. He scoops them up.
He sprints around the corner.
No sign of Bobbi.
Delivery doors on either side.
Ahead the Lucky Time van forces its way through the
pedestrian traffic to block the alley.
Two men hop from the van and head up the alley, ignoring the
protestations of pedestrians.
Randy ducks through a door opened by a SMOKER, too busy
watching the van to notice him. He pulls the door closed.
SMOKER
Hey, what the--
INT. STOCKROOM HAPPY FEET SHOE STORE
Randy locks the door.
CLERK on a ladder retrieving shoes watches in amazement.
Pounding on the door.
RANDY
Call the police.
A BULLET rips through the door, barely missing Randy.
Randy moves into the sales area.
Puts on his inline skates.
Stuffing his shoes into the pack, he notices the PAINTBALL
GUN. He sticks it in his belt.
EXT. HAPPY FEET SHOE STORE - DAY
Randy exits. In either direction men are running toward him.
He skates into the street, dodges a car.
Screeching brakes and horns.
The van rounds the corner and heads after him.
Randy changes direction and ducks behind a car.
He glances back to make sure the pursuit is following.
Turns a corner and heads up hill.
INT. SAMMY'S CAR - DAY
With Price driving, the car crosses the intersection and
follows Randy who is hitching a ride from a car.
SAMMY
Bump him off and when I grab him
slam him into the parked cars.
PRICE
Jeez, don't we need him alive?
SAMMY
Only his mouth has to work. We'll
scrap him off the car.
EXT. HILLY STREET - DAY
Randy, squating behind his ride, turns to see them closing
fast to ram him.
He lets go of his ride and veers out of the way, but Sammy's
chain snakes out and catches his left wrist.
Sammy jerks him tight up against the car.
SAMMY
Hey, shithead, Let's talk.
Price veers towards a parked car.
Randy leaps, his skates run along the car's side and roof.
Sammy's car grinds along it.
With the next parked car approaching, Randy pulls Sammy's
upper body out the car window.
RANDY
Come on out and join me.
Eyes locked on the parked car, Sammy lets go of the chain.
Randy releases Sammy. Slips back. Grabs the rear of his car.
At the last instant, Price veers away.
Sammy's shoulder knocks off the parked car's side view mirror.
The car behind slams on its brakes. Other cars plow into it,
closing the street in both directions.
INT. SAMMY'S CAR - DAY
Sammy looks around, but Randy isn't visible.
SAMMY
Hit the brakes.
When Price doesn't respond fast enough, Sammy jams his foot
down on the brake pedal.
EXT. HILLY STREET - DAY
The car screeches to a halt, hurtling Randy onto the roof.
Randy rolls off the roof on Price's side.
Randy hits the ground moving.
Directly into oncoming traffic.
He jumps. Lands on the hood of an oncoming car.
Skates across the top.
Hitting the ground, he jumps and slides across the top of the
next car which comes to a screeching halt, sliding into
Price's lane. Price bashes his way through and keeps coming.
Randy pulls out his PAINTBALL GUN.
Turns the corner with Price hanging right behind him, forcing
cars onto the sidewalk.
They are heading down hill in traffic.
Randy fires a stream of balls back at the car.
Price slows, turns on the wiper and stick his head out.
Sammy draws his gun.
SAMMY
That's enough of this bullshit.
Sammy FIRES and misses, blowing out a store display window.
Glass showers down on pedestrians.
The paintball hopper empties.
Randy speeds up. Drops into a crouch.
He takes a tube from his pack and empties it into the hopper.
Randy turns in his crouch to fire as
Sammy FIRES, hitting the hopper, splattering Randy.
Randy catches a skate edge and falls.
He rolls over twice and skids along the road.
SAMMY
Crush his legs.
Price swerves, aiming for Randy's legs.
Randy rolls between two cars and comes up on the sidewalk.
Price screeches the car to a halt and Sammy jumps out.
Sammy takes off on foot after Randy.
Price goes ahead in the car.
At the next intersection, Price pulls the car around the
corner against the light and blocks the sidewalk.
A motorcyclist slides into the back of his car.
Randy leaps Price's car and keeps going.
Sammy kicks the Motorcyclist away from the cycle, gets on and
takes off after Randy.
Sammy weaves around the slower traffic until he catches up to
Randy who is hitching a ride.
Sammy kicks out at Randy.
Randy lets go and veers onto the sidewalk.
Sammy parallels Randy's course until he reaches a vacant
parking spot and jumps the curb onto the sidewalk.
POLICE SIRENS in the distance.
Scattering people, Sammy closes in on Randy, brushing him
with the wheel of the cycle.
Randy dodges to the side, ducks a slash from Sammy's gun hand
and jabs his paintball gun at the motorcycles front wheel.
It's kicked out by a spoke.
Sammy backs off, evading a second thrust.
They grapple, clutching each other, as they fly down the
crowded sidewalk, scattering the fast people, knocking aside
the slow ones.
The chain, hanging from Randy's wrist, keeps getting kicked
out by the motorcycles spokes.
Ahead a PUSH CART looms.
RANDY
Remember me, shithead?
Sammy steers for the cart, intent on scraping Randy off.
SAMMY
Say hello to my friend.
Randy glances up in time to see the cart.
The two rip by on opposite sides of the cart.
Merchandise and parts of the cart fly into the air.
Children step from a store, right in front of Randy.
Dodging them, he is funnelled through the door into the store.
INT. SPORTS EQUIPMENT STORE
Randy pivots to a grinding halt and watches Sammy turn the
cycle and head for him.
Sammy FIRES, blowing away the glass door. He smashes through
the falling glass.
Retreating, Randy jumps onto the DOWN ESCALATOR and squirms
his way past riders.
Sammy follows, gunning the cycle up the treads.
People dive off or get plowed over the side.
INT. MEZZANINE
Sammy roars over the top, sliding into a display case,
exploding binoculars and cameras in every direction.
He guns it and starts moving when
Randy throws the choke chain at the front wheel.
The motorcycle cartwheels into a display.
As Sammy crawls free, a BASEBALL BAT knocks the gun from his
hand, sending it off into hiding.
Sammy twists away from the next blow which shatters the bat
against the cycle.
Sammy kicks out at Randy who skids back into a display,
destroying it.
Sammy, retrieves his chain, pulls his knife and rushes Randy.
Randy grabs a ski pole and parries Sammy's thrust.
Wild fencing match, tearing up everything. Sammy is more
skilled, but Randy is quicker, always managing to get
something between himself and Sammy's blade until--
Sammy kicks him, sending him back to flip over the railing of
the mezzanine.
Randy starts to pull himself up, but a knife thrust by a
smiling Sammy forces him to drop and hang at arms length.
Sammy stabs his knife at his hand,
Randy shifts his grip, but the knife cuts his finger.
SAMMY
Where's the money?
Sammy stabs again and misses. He's enjoying this.
Randy's hands begin to slip.
Sammy grabs Randy's wrist.
SAMMY
What do you say I cut off a finger?
Sammy prepares for surgery when Randy lets go.
The weight jerks Sammy over the railing.
Starting to go, Sammy lets go.
Randy drops, landing on a table of discount sweaters which
collapses under the impact.
COPS RUSH IN.
Sammy sees them and disappears.
The cops spot Randy and head for him, guns drawn.
Randy looks up. No Sammy.
He skates toward the back and out the service entrance.
EXT. ALLEY - DAY
Randy skates off the loading dock.
A cop car, lights and siren, roars up.
Randy takes the opposite direction.
EXT. STREET - DAY
Randy turns onto the street. Spots stairs leading down.
He skates over. An unabelievably long descent.
He retreats and as the cop car reaches the street, he charges
the stairs.
Jumping onto the railing he grinds it down.
The cop car stops. Kills it's siren. The cop gets out and
looks up and down the street. Nothing.
EXT. STAIRS - DAY
Randy reaches the bottom of the stairs and skates away.
INT. BUS - DAY
Sammy steps on, pays his fee and hangs on a bar.
Disgusted with the state of his clothes, Sammy brushes the
dirt off. Wipes away blood.
Noticing the other passengers watching him. He scowls back.
SAMMY
What are you looking at?
The passengers quickly look away.
INT. SIT AND SPIN - DAY
This is a combination restaurant and laundromat.
Customers play games while waiting for the wash cycle to end.
Randy sets a beer on a table and his pack on the floor.
Before sitting, he empties his pockets onto the table.
He smiles at TRUDY (older woman) at the next table who is
watching him intently.
Sippng his beer, he pokes through the pile: cash, Bobbi's
Washington State Drivers License, Parking Ticket, Receipt for
a cellular telephone, Picture of a smiling Tony Bimbo holding
a baby.
A six digit number scrawled on the back of the parking ticket.
TRUDY
Hi, do you want to play a game of
Parcheesi?... It's hard to play
alone.
Randy thinks for a second. Pushes the pile into his pack.
RANDY
Only if you promise not to hurt me.
She sets her tea and a beat-up KITCHEN TIMER down.
Sets up the PARCHEESI BOARD.
TRUDY
I promise. I'll even let you win.
What color do you want?
RANDY
Green. It fits my mood.
(offers his hand)
Randy.
TRUDY
Trudy. I sort of work here. I do
peoples' clothes for five dollars
a basket. It's not so much the
money as to keep me busy.... Since
Fred died last year... I...
When she fails to get the words out.
RANDY
We belong to different chapters of
the same club.
As they play, Trudy studies Randy: tattered clothes,
paintball paint, nicked ear, dirty bandage on hand.
TRUDY
Are you in some kind of trouble?
(hurried, apologetic)
The reason I ask you look... a
little chewed on.
Randy leans forward conspiratorially.
Motions to a man playing solitaire.
RANDY
See the guy in the corner?
(when Trudy nods)
He's the only guy who isn't after me.
Trudy looks shocked and then smiles.
TRUDY
You're pulling my leg. Aren't you?
RANDY
Not by much. A couple of nights
ago, I got drunk, hoping to forget
my miserable life. Now a pack of
wolves want to rip out my throat.
I've been sitting here trying to
decide what to do next. I don't
see anything left worth fighting
for.
TRUDY
(hesitant, unsure)
If you'd like some time to think,
you can stay with me.... You can
think better after a shower and a
hot meal.
(pause)
As I said, since Fred died...
Randy studies Trudy.
RANDY
How do you know I won't cut your
throat?
TRUDY
I'm old enough to tell a cutthroat
from a troubled soul.
INT. TRUDY'S KITCHEN - DAY
Posters extolling anarchism and urging battle to throw off
the shackles of authoritarianism plaster the walls--Freedom
Now.
Cleaned and bandaged, Randy enters.
Trudy places soup and other food on the table.
TRUDY
How do they fit?
RANDY
Great. I feel like leaping a tall
building. How much do I owe you?
TRUDY
That's all right. They were
collateral for a non-performing
loan. Let's eat.
Trudy signals for Randy to sit with her.
Randy sets some money on the table next to Trudy.
RANDY
Use it to fund the next non-
performing loan.
They eat in silence. Then
TRUDY
Did you hurt anyone?
RANDY
Huh?
TRUDY
...getting away from the wolves.
Did you hurt anyone? Fred use to
say hurting people causes bad
karma.
RANDY
That I know about. I've got a ton
and a half of it hanging on me.
Because of me, my girlfriend is
dead, killed by some animal. Hurt
someone? That's all I've done.
TRUDY
You have to stop thinking like
that and find the strength to get
on with your life.
RANDY
My life has been reduced to
getting the animal that killed
Peggy and I even failed at that.
There's nothing left.
TRUDY
Fred would hate me for this, but
you should leave it for the police.
RANDY
The police? They think I killed
her. And without proof... I'm the
only one who can bring him to
justice.
TRUDY
Is it justice you're after or
vengeance?
(places hand on
forearm)
Let it go. Your self-hate and
anger will eat away your soul,
leaving you as wretched and evil
as the man you hate. You have to
stop hating and accept what
happened. Help someone else.
Create good to balance off the bad.
RANDY
I can't let him walk away.
TRUDY
No one can walk away from their
destiny. Instead of vengeance,
seek a way to let his evil feed
upon itself.
RANDY
How do I do that?
TRUDY
Stop letting your hate control
you. Follow your heart and head
and it will come to you.
Randy thinks about it. Takes out the parking ticket. Shows it
to Trudy.
RANDY
Do you know where this is?
Trudy glances at the address.
TRUDY
Ninth and Stewart? The Bus Station?
INT. BUS STATION - DAY
Randy looks around.
His gaze locks on a bank of lockers accessed by a keypad.
Randy enters the numbers on the back of the parking ticket.
A locker opens.
Randy takes out the money bag.
INT. TRAIN STATION - DAY
Randy sticks an envelope in a locker, closes it and takes the
key.
EXT. PARKING LOT PAY TELEPHONE - DAY
Randy cautiously checks the surroundings. Dials a number.
POLICE (TELEPHONE)
Seattle Police Department.
RANDY
There're drugs in locker 18 at the
train station. Watch for a woman
sometime today or tomorrow.
Randy hangs up. Punches in Bobbi's cellular telephone number.
BOBBI (TELEPHONE)
(cautious)
Hello.
RANDY
You want to get together, Bobbi?
BOBBI (TELEPHONE)
You must be out of your mind.
RANDY
I've got the parking ticket.
BOBBI (TELEPHONE)
...Where?
EXT. JUNKYARD FIELD - DAY
Sammy and Price wait next to their car.
Price scans the surroundings, looking for the bogeyman.
PRICE
Why meet here?
Sammy checks BOTH his automatic pistols and puts them away.
He flicks some unseen dust from his jacket and buffs his shoe
with his handkerchief.
SAMMY
It's quiet. Susie likes quiet.
Three cars enter: sedan, Susie's limousine, Lucky Time van.
They stop on the opposite end from Sammy and Price.
Sammy flashes Price a malevolent smile.
SAMMY
Here's your chance to ask her.
The van door opens and Clay, bound hand and foot is tossed to
the ground. He's been given a pretty good tune-up.
The crew piles out. Duffy with a patch over his eye from the
earlier paintball incident.
Odd Job opens the door for Susie.
Smiling Jack nudges Clay with his foot.
Clay watches Smiling Jack examine his knife.
SUSIE
You want to hear what he has to
say, Sammy?
SAMMY
Sure.
Smiling Jack slides the knife under the tape on Clay's mouth.
Drawing some blood. He flicks the tape off.
SMILING JACK
I'll make him speak up, so we can
all hear.
Sammy pulls both AUTOMATICS.
Sticks one against Price's head and FIRES.
Then he fires at Smiling Jack, splattering blood on his chest
and knocking him back against the van.
Susie draws a gun from somewhere on her inner thigh, but
takes a shot to the head before she can bring it into play.
Odd Job fires, grazing Sammy's left arm.
Sammy returns his fire, dropping him.
Everyone has dodged for cover, leaving Clay in the dirt.
Smiling Jack examines a smear of blood on his hand, glances
at the dead Susie and charges Sammy screaming.
The others watch in stunned silence.
Sammy empties his guns into Smiling Jack, who keeps coming,
twitching with each bullet hit.
Sammy's guns lock back empty. He braces himself to meet
Smiling Jack's charge--prepared to use his guns as clubs.
Feet short of Sammy, Smiling Jack stiffens and keels over.
His knife sticks in the ground between Sammy's feet.
Everyone stares at Smiling Jack for a second, and then...
The spell breaks and they open up on Sammy.
Sammy drops behind a car wreck and reloads.
Bullets rip the car to shreds.
SAMMY
(screaming)
Hold your fire.
The shooting slows and stops.
SAMMY
It's over. Susie's dead...
Nobody's going to give you jack
shit for killing me.
(pause)
I know how to get the money.
Marco checks Susie.
MARCO
He's right. She's dead.
SAMMY
You want to kill me for nothing?
Or do you want ten thousand to
work for me? Hell, I make you all
rich.
Sammy steps from behind the car. His guns hang by his side.
He studies the men, all behind cover.
SAMMY
What do you say?
He moves farther into the open. Puts his guns away.
SAMMY
Ten thousand? Or nothing?
The men slowly lower their guns and come out.
Sammy stands over Clay.
CLAY
Jesus Christ, Sammy. Cut me loose.
SAMMY
All you had to do was kill a
couple of zombies.
(kicks Clay)
And you fucked it.
(kicks Clay)
I gave you the shithead and you
fucked it again.
Sammy pulls Clay to his feet. Slams him against the van.
SAMMY
Where the fuck is my money? What
the fuck I am going to use to
cover the margin call?
Death's breath touches Clay. He whines:
CLAY
Jesus Christ, Sammy, you can't...
SAMMY
Tell me why I can't.
CLAY
I know what they look like. I can
help you get them.
INT. SIT AND SPIN - LIGHT
Randy sits with a pitcher of beer playing solitaire.
Bobbi slides onto the opposite seat.
She pokes her gun against the inside of Randy's thigh.
BOBBI
Give me the ticket or I'll blow
your nuts off.
Staring eye to eye, Randy pours a beer. Slides it to her.
RANDY
I moved the money. If you're a
good girl. I'll take you to it.
Bobbi takes a deep breath, collapses back in the seat and
puts her gun away.
BOBBI
What do you want?
RANDY
Why me? You had the whole bar to
pick from. How did I hurt you
enough to do this to me?
BOBBI
I wasn't going to, but then you...
(shrugs)
You were there. It had to be
someone.... I'm sorry.
RANDY
You're sorry. Dead bodies all
over, half the world after me and
you're sorry.
BOBBI
Clay said no one would get hurt.
As she remembers, she covers her mouth and looks sick.
BOBBI
Oh, God. I thought I'd die when he
shot them. There was blood
everywhere. And then...
EXT. PARK - DAY
Clay and Bobbi at a picnic table eating.
A blanket piled on the seat next to Clay.
Clay, hiding his short hair with a pea cap, wears Randy's
Steelers' jacket and black frame sunglasses.
Bobbi, wearing a wig, looks shaky. She takes a pill vial from
her jacket and shakes a couple of pills into her hand.
Clay grabs the bottle and pills before she can take them.
CLAY
No more. They'll make you sick.
BOBBI
I can't help it. My nerves are
ready to explode.
Clay pockets the pills.
CLAY
Jesus Christ, I'm not exactly
riding a cloud. Hang in for five
fucking minutes.
(command)
Keep your eyes on them.
Bobbi shifts her gaze past Clay to Price and another man
sitting at a neighboring table. Each has a two man escort at
his back. They swap gym bags and check their contents.
BOBBI
They're making the swap now.
The two men with Price are wearing rain slickers. One turns
taking in Clay and Bobbi. He spends a second checking out
Bobbi's assets before continuing his scan of the area. The
wind catches his slicker, exposing the UZI he's carrying.
BOBBI
They've got guns.
CLAY
Did you think they were going to
hand us the money?
(looks hard at Bobbi)
Do you want the money?
(when Bobbi doesn't
respond)
Clocks ticking... tick... tick
Bobbi slowly stands and says for the others to hear:
BOBBI
I forgot the bananas.
Clay watches Bobbi walk toward Randy's car.
He checks the AUTOMATIC PISTOL in his belt.
He pulls back the corner of the blanket, exposing the pistol
grip of an AUTOMATIC SHOTGUN.
Price and his two man escort watch the others leave and then
head back toward their car, walking past Clay.
One of the escorts scans Clay and the food and dismisses him.
Clay pauses a second, giving himself room to work, before
bringing up the shotgun and BLASTING one of the escorts.
Price and the other man turn, guns drawn.
Clay moves behind a car and fires again, nailing the second
man. But not before he unloads his UZI at him, tearing up the
car and everything around him.
Scared shitless, Price drops the money bag and runs.
Clay picks up the bag and gives chase.
Trembling and swearing to himself, Price desperately stabs
his key at his car's door lock.
Opening the door, he looks up to see Clay taking aim.
Price ducks. Brings up his hand to protect his face.
PRICE
You got the money. Don't hurt me.
Clay's shot rips up the hood and windshield of the car,
hitting Price's hand with a few pellets.
Price fires a wild shot, turns and runs right into the path
of Randy's car. He hits the hood, losing his gun.
Bobbi skids into the rear of Price's car, bashing the fender.
Price and Bobbi stare at each other in amazement until she
throws the car in reverse and backs away.
He rolls off. Crawls under a car, avoiding a blast from Clay.
Clay jumps into Randy's car.
INT. RANDY'S CAR - DAY
Bobbi's foot comes off the accelerator.
She bends over the wheel and throws up.
BOBBI
Oh, God. You killed them.
Clay grabs the wheel and shoves the accelerator down.
The car rockets from the parking lot.
CLAY
Shut up and drive.
INT. SIT AND SPIN - LIGHT
BOBBI
I hit him with the car. Oh, God.
She closes her eyes and cries.
Surprised by her reaction, Randy watches her for a moment
before touching her shoulder to get her back.
BOBBI
I didn't want anyone to get hurt.
All I wanted was Stefan.... I
didn't think you'd even find out.
RANDY
Who's Stefan?
Bobbi brightens.
BOBBI
My son. No, he's more than that...
he's my life. He'll make
everything right. Tony said he'd
let me have him for twenty
thousand dollars. Clay was only
going to give me ten, so I had to
take the money.
Randy hands Bobbi the picture of Tony and the baby.
She accepts it as though it were a cherished possession.
RANDY
This guy at the bar, he's Tony.
BOBBI
(nods)
Tony Bimbo, Stefan's father. He
took Stefan from me and passed me
around. He told me I had to start
earning my keep.
RANDY
Why didn't you go to the police?
BOBBI
(disgusted)
Police. My whole life they've
never helped me. Stefan wasn't
born in a hospital.
(waves picture)
Except for this picture I can't
prove Stefan even exists. Tony's
a gypsy chieftain. He'll keep
Stefan hidden from the world,
without school, without contact
with other people. He'll grow up
unable to read, with no idea how
to talk to non-gypsies. He'll be
bound to the tribe, trapped in a
filthy life, unable to get out.
(Places a hand on
Randy's arm, looks
pleadingly at him)
I'll do anything. Anything you
want to get him back.
TRUDY (O.S.)
Well, it looks like I lost my
Parcheesi partner.
Bobbi and Randy look up at a smiling Trudy.
RANDY
Maybe later.
TRUDY
(dismissive wave)
That's all right. Three isn't fun
anyway.
(smiling at Bobbi)
It's good to see you've found
someone who's on your side.
Trudy moves off. Bobbi returns attention to Randy.
BOBBI
Anything, just give me enough to
buy Stefan. You can't let my baby
grow up with that filthy pig. He'd
be better off dead.... What do you
want?
RANDY
I want my life back, but it's too
late for that. It's over. I want
the guy who killed Peggy. I want
to put him someplace where he
won't hurt anyone else.
BOBBI
(sarcastic)
You had your chance today. The
next time you may not be able to
run away from him.
(realizing that was
a mistake)
I'm sorry I didn't mean that. I'll
do whatever you want as long as
Stefan is free of Bimbo.
RANDY
Come with me to the police?
A bolt through Bobbi's heart. Catching her breath:
BOBBI
Okay, okay. If you help me get
Stefan to my aunt in Cedar Mills,
I'll do it. I'll tell them
whatever you want.
RANDY
It's a deal. You help clear me
with the police and I'll help you.
INT. ALICE'S APARTMENT - LIGHT
Sammy, nursing a beer, watches a financial news program on
television.
SAMMY
(in response to
commentator)
Slight correction. The fucking
stock's toilet paper.
SOUND OF A KEY in the door lock.
The door opens and ALICE, dressed in a skin tight outfit and
carrying a shoulder bag with her battle gear, enters. One
look at Alice and you know she's been doing this for too long.
She stares at Sammy for a second before dumping her bag.
She leaves the door open.
ALICE
Who the fuck are you?
Alice heads for the kitchen.
She checks a drawer and finds all the knives are gone.
SAMMY
Sammy.
Sammy stands. Watches her grab a beer from the refrigerator.
SAMMY
Where you been? The manager said
you worked the early shift.
Marco slips through the door. Closes it behind him.
Alice glances at Marco and back to Sammy. She takes a swig.
ALICE
I got some extra work.
SAMMY
Good for you.
Alice walks over to Sammy and looks at him eye to eye.
ALICE
So... What'da fuck you want?
SAMMY
Bobbi.
ALICE
Who the hell is he?
Sammy whips the chain over Alice's head and pulls her close.
She tries to knee him and hit him with the beer bottle, but
Sammy deflects the blows.
Alice claws at the chain; then decides to go for his eyes.
Sammy steps back, jerking Alice off her feet.
Drags her, kicking and clawing, to the center of the room.
Smacks her to the floor and sits on her chest.
Sticks his knife blade into her nostril.
SAMMY
You're just another bug I have to
step on to get what I want.
Withdrawing the knife, he lifts her head by the chain and
slams it down.
SAMMY
I'll cut you into little pieces
and smear you all over this
fucking dump.
(pause)
You want to try again?
Alice nods her head quickly.
Sammy eases up on the chain.
Alice forces her fingers beneath the chain and sucks in a
lung full of air, her eyes on the knife.
ALICE
(gasping for air)
Yeah... Bobbi... I forgot.
Sammy drags her over and dumps her in a chair.
Removes the chain.
He dabs at the beer on his jacket with a handkerchief.
SAMMY
I'm in a good mood, Alice. Don't
make me get ugly.
Alice, gasping for air and rubbing her neck, watches Sammy
like an animal afraid of another beating.
ALICE
She wants me to pick her up at the
Bainbridge Island ferry parking
lot.
SAMMY
When?
ALICE
She said she'd call.
SAMMY
Why?
ALICE
(a bit testy)
How the fuck do I know.
Sammy backhands her to the floor and kicks her.
Alice covers up, protecting her head with her arms. Lost in
a frenzy of fear, she yells anything to stop the beating:
ALICE
She said she'd give me five
hundred dollars. That's all I
know. I swear that's all I know.
SAMMY
Tell you what. We'll ask her
together.
INT. MOTEL ROOM - LIGHT
Bobbi sits in a chair, nervously massaging a pint of Scotch,
while Randy video tapes her. Her eyes twitch between Randy
and the camera.
BOBBI
After we got away, I dropped off
the car. Randy had nothing to do
with it. It was all Clay
Sinclair's idea.
(takes a swig)
Is that okay?
Randy stops recording and removes the tape.
RANDY
No, but it'll have to do. It will
get the police looking for Clay
and keep them from shooting me
long enough for me to tell them
about the dog guy.
Bobbi watches Randy package the tape in a mailing envelope.
She places a timid hand on his arm.
BOBBI
(suspicious, afraid)
You still going to help? I did my
part didn't I?... You can't punish
Stefan because of what I did.
Randy places the package down and faces her.
He studies her face, searching for a sign, anything to nudge
him one way or the other. Finally:
RANDY
How are you going to prevent him
from taking the money and keeping
Stefan?
Bobbi brightens.
BOBBI
I have a plan.
RANDY
It damn well better be a good plan.
Relieved, she wraps her arms around his neck in a hug.
Randy takes on the locker key. Tosses it in the trash can.
BOBBI
Thank you. I'm...
(chokes back a sob)
...so sorry. All I wanted was
Stefan. It was suppose to be
something beautiful. A new life
for Stefan and me.
Uncertain how to react, Randy stands with his arms at his
side. Then he succumbs to her vulnerability. He cradles her
in his arms and gently strokes her hair.
RANDY
It's all right. We'll get out of
this.
Bobbi buries her head in his chest.
Says something we cannot hear.
RANDY
What?
BOBBI
(whispered)
Hold me... Hold me tight.
INT. ALICE'S APARTMENT - LIGHT
Marco and Rick are watching television--ball game??
The phone RINGS. Alice picks it up.
ALICE
(into phone)
Yeah?
(listens)
I'll let you know. Stop bothering
me.
MARCO
Who was that?
ALICE
Some guy.
Marco keeps looking at her.
ALICE
He keeps asking me for a date.
Marco goes back to watching the television.
ALICE
What if she doesn't call? I have
to go to work.
MARCO
Talk to Sammy.
This does not sound like a good idea to Alice.
The phone RINGS.
ALICE
(into phone)
Yeah?
(listens)
Tomorrow? Sure.
(hangs up)
That was her.
INT. RANDY'S CAR - DAY
Randy gets in the driver's seat and hands a bag to Bobbi.
Bobbi checks the bag while Randy drives off.
BOBBI
This isn't all the money.
RANDY
It's all you need.
BOBBI
You're right, you're right... I
was hoping you'd... You're right.
RANDY
Helping you get Stefan was the deal.
Bobbi places the bag in a paper bag with garbage on top.
BOBBI
I know, I know... it's just
that... What about the tape?
RANDY
I'll give you 24 hours before I
mail it. That should give you a
couple of days to hide.
BOBBI
What about you? What are you going
to do? With all that money you
could start over.
RANDY
All I want is the dog guy.
BOBBI
How could she mean that much to
you? She dumped you.
RANDY
It's not about Peggy anymore. It's
about me. For once in my life I'm
going to see something through to
the end. I going to do it because
it has to be done.
EXT. PIER 52 FERRY TERMINAL - DAY
Randy pays the toll, drives in and stops off to the side of
the toll booths.
INT. RANDY'S CAR -DAY
Bobbi looks like a frightened little girl.
Her hands are shaking as she checks the gun in her pocket.
She pulls out her pill vial. Thinks about it. Puts it away.
BOBBI
God, I'm so nervous I think I'll
shake to death. This is going to
work, isn't it?
Randy places his hand on her shoulder.
RANDY
We'll make it.
BOBBI
Yeah, sure.
Bobbi gets out of the car. Peeks in at Randy.
BOBBI
You'll be there?
RANDY
I'll be there.
Bobbi starts to leave. Turns back.
BOBBI
I'm sorry.
INT. ALICE'S CAR - DAY
Alice pulls up to the Pier 52 toll booth. Sammy and Rick in
the back. Clay, bandage on his cheek and looking battered, is
sitting next to her.
Alice turns and whines to Sammy.
ALICE
I'm not paying for the fucking ride.
Sammy hands her a bill. She pockets the change and ticket,
and drives through.
When the car stops at the end of the line, Sammy climbs out.
SAMMY
(to Rick)
Watch'em both.
Sammy walks toward the terminal building.
His cellular phone RINGS.
SAMMY
Yeah?
(listens)
I'm working on it. I'll have it to
you by tomorrow.
(listens)
Then sell the goddamn stock.
(listens)
So sue me.
(hangs up)
Shithead.
INT. PIER 52 FERRY TERMINAL - DAY
Sammy meets Duffy and Marco.
MARCO
He's not here.
Sammy pulls out a copy of Investor's Business Daily.
SAMMY
Keep your eyes open and disappear.
INT. PIER 52 FERRY TERMINAL / ENTRANCE - DAY
Santo with a baby-care bag over his shoulder enters.
He checks out the place and gives an all clear signal.
Bimbo enters carrying a baby carrier. Darius is with him.
Watching from a quiet corner, Bobbi takes out a cellular
phone and hits the dial button.
EXT. TOWN & COUNTRY / TELEPHONE BOOTH - DAY
The phone RINGS. Randy picks it up.
INTERCUT BOBBI & RANDY
BOBBI
(nervously)
You ready?
RANDY
Humming with anticipation. If
anything goes wrong--
BOBBI
We meet at the Sit & Spin. I'll
call you when we get on the boat.
INT. PIER 52 FERRY TERMINAL - DAY
Bobbi pockets the phone, takes a deep breath and goes to
greet Bimbo, hand in her pocket.
As she approaches, Santo nudges Bimbo and points at her.
Bimbo smiles and strides towards her.
BIMBO
Bobbi, you look beautiful today.
Bobbi's attention is riveted on the baby carrier. She pulls
back the blanket and smiles down at Stefan who stares back
filled with curiosity.
BOBBI
Cut the bullshit.
Bimbo loses his smile.
BIMBO
Where's the money?
BOBBI
You, me and Stefan are taking a
boat ride.
Bimbo shows flashes of anger. He motions his men to grab her.
BIMBO
I think first I will see the money.
Bobbi retreats a step. Points her gun at Bimbo.
BOBBI
They touch me, I blow a hole in you.
Darius and Santo stop. Bimbo wags his head slowly.
BIMBO
No, you ask for my son, a piece of
my soul. I do this because I
believe you will be a good mother.
The money is for my other
children. First the money
(dismissive gesture)
or you waste my time.
Bimbo turns to leave. Bobbi blocks his path.
BOBBI
I'm not stupid enough to give you
the money here with them around.
It's on the boat. Stefan, you and
me get on the boat. Everyone else
waits here.... I want Stefan, but
if we don't do it my way, I'll
keep the money.
BIMBO
If you try anything, I'll cut out
your heart.
INT. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND FERRY - DAY
Bobbi and Bimbo watch the ferry cast off.
BIMBO
Where's the money?
BOBBI
Sun deck.
EXT. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND FERRY / SUN DECK - DAY
Bobbi gestures at a seat in the open area.
BOBBI
Wait here.
Walking toward the other end of the boat, Bobbi punches the
button on the cellular phone.
BOBBI
(into the phone)
We're on.
Bobbi removes her bag from below the liner of a trash can.
She shows Bimbo the money and places the bag beyond his reach
on the bench.
BOBBI
First, I want to make sure you
don't follow me.
Bobbi binds his right wrist to the armrest with a plastic tie.
BIMBO
After all I have done to help you,
you insult me like this.
Bobbi shifts the baby carrier to another bench. Close to
tears of joy, she pulls back the blanket to look at her son.
She kisses him on his forehead and gently strokes his cheek.
BOBBI
My beautiful baby, I'll never
leave you again.
Bimbo checks the money.
BIMBO
Enjoy your visit. It won't last
long.
Wiping a tear from her cheek, she places the blanket over
Stefan. Taking a deep breath, she faces Bimbo.
BOBBI
Fuck you.
INT. ALICE'S CAR - DAY
The car is at the far edge of a large half-filled lot.
Clay picks through a donut box.
CLAY
Jesus Christ, who ate the
chocolate cream?
ALICE
Who the fuck said it belonged to
you?
Clay opens the car door. Rick grabs his jacket collar.
RICK
Where the hell you going?
CLAY
To get a donut. It'll be a half
hour before the ferry gets back.
(shrugs free)
What the hell am I going to do:
hide in the woods?
Clay climbs out and closes the door.
ALICE
Get me a hot chocolate.
(when Clay doesn't
respond)
Asshole!
EXT. BAINBRIDGE COFFEE SHOP - DAY
Clay spots Randy driving by as he's about to enter the shop.
CLAY
Jesus Christ. There is a god.
Clay glances back at Alice's car, thinks about it for a
second and walks toward the ferry landing.
EXT. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND FERRY - DAY
The Ferry is coming into a landing. Sammy, Duffy and Marco
watch Bobbi, carrying the baby carrier, head below.
Bimbo tries to reach into his right pocket with his left hand.
SAMMY
Where's the money?
MARCO
In the bag?
DUFFY
Or the baby carrier?
SAMMY
Not half a million.
Sammy nudges Macro.
SAMMY
Follow the bitch.
(when Marco hesitates)
We're on a fucking boat. Where am
I going to go?
Sammy punches numbers on his cellular phone.
INT. ALICE'S CAR - DAY
PHONE RINGS. Rick pulls a phone from his pocket.
RICK
Yeah?
INTERCUT SAMMY AND RICK
SAMMY
She's on the boat with the grease
ball from the bar. Ask Clay who
the kid is.
RICK
(flinching as he says
it)
He went to get a donut.
SAMMY
(berserk)
What the fuck you let him go for?
RICK
How was I going stop him?
SAMMY
Stick with the bitch. I don't want
this fucked up.
Sammy shoves the phone in his pocket and wags his head.
SAMMY
(to Duffy)
This whole fucking thing is
turning to shit.
DUFFY
Maybe we should talk to him.
SAMMY
Nothing's happening till we reach
the other side. Find a seat and
keep your eyes open.
INT. RANDY'S CAR - DAY
Randy waiting in line for the ferry.
Clay gets in. Sticks his gun in Randy's side.
CLAY
Jesus Christ, look who I found. I
thought you were going to the
police, sunshine.
RANDY
Things got in the way.
Clay pats Randy down for a weapon.
CLAY
So how's Bobbi treating you?
RANDY
About the same as you.
(studies Clay)
You look like a sick dog's shit.
Clay touches the bandage on his cheek.
CLAY
Yeah. I owe you for this.
RANDY
That makes us even.
Keeping the gun on Randy, Clay rummages through the baby
things in the back of the car.
CLAY
Bullshit. I pulled your ass out of
the fucking dog's mouth.
Clay waves the gun indicating he wants Randy to move the car.
CLAY
Let's go someplace and talk about
the money.
When Randy fails to respond, Clay begins to lose it.
CLAY
C'mon, get out of line.
RANDY
Bobbi has the money and she's on
the boat.
CLAY
(wicked smile)
I know that. We'll wait for her
here.
RANDY
You mean Alice? She's a decoy.
What the hell do you think I'm
here for? Bobbi never leaves the
boat.
INT. ALICE'S CAR - DAY
Rick is getting twitchy in the backseat.
RICK
Where the hell is he?
ALICE
How the fuck would I know? Maybe
he had to take a leak.
Dimitri crouches next to Alice's window, sizes up Rick.
DIMITRI
Alice. So how come you didn't call?
Rick pulls his gun.
RICK
Who the hell are you?
DIMITRI
Be careful with that. You could
get hurt.
RICK
Yeah? By you?
Dimitri nods to Basil--and gun--on the other side of the car.
Rick hands his gun to Basil.
ALICE
There's another one.
BASIL
Yeah, we saw him.
Basil and Dimitri climb in.
DIMITRI
Move to another part of the lot.
BASIL
What about him?
DIMITRI
Tie him up and dump him in the
woods.
EXT. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND FERRY - DAY
The Ferry pulls into the dock. People move back to their cars.
Sammy punches cellular phone. After a few RINGS he gives up.
SAMMY
Everything's turning to shit.
DUFFY
We getting off the boat?
SAMMY
We stick with these two. Go see
what Marco is up to.
EXT. BAINBRIDGE FERRY DOCK - DAY
Cars drive on board. Randy's car is directed to the outside.
INT. RANDY'S CAR - DAY
Randy parks. Other cars pull in around him.
Randy starts to climb out.
CLAY
Where the hell are you going?
RANDY
To tell her where we are?
Clay grabs the car keys and follows Randy.
EXT. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND FERRY / SUN DECK - DAY
Randy and Clay come onto deck.
Clay jams the gun into Randy's back.
CLAY
Where the hell is she?
Randy looks confused. He glances around.
RANDY
She was suppose to meet me here.
CLAY
Jesus Christ, she fucked us again.
She got off the goddamn boat.
Randy nods toward Bimbo, still tied to the seat.
RANDY
We can still be partners. There's
a hundred thousand in the bag....
It's better than nothing.
Clay pokes Randy with the gun.
CLAY
Stay away from me and the car.
Clay pushes Randy away and heads for Bimbo.
EXT. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND FERRY / SUN DECK
BIMBO extracts his knife with his fingertips and works it
around to open it when...
Clay takes the knife from him.
CLAY
Hi, sunshine. Let me have that
before you hurt yourself.
Clay pockets the knife and sits down. He puts the money bag
on his lap and unzips it a tad.
CLAY
You seem to be in a bit of a fix.
BIMBO
(confused)
Who are you?
Clay checks the bag. Zips it shut.
CLAY
Catch you later.
Bimbo tries to tug his hand free.
BIMBO
You die for this. You and Bobbi.
EXT. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND FERRY / SUN DECK
SAMMY'S POV - we watch Clay walk away.
DUFFY
What is he doing here?
SAMMY
I'll ask him. Keep an eye on the
grease ball.
INT. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND FERRY / STAIRS TO CARS - LIGHT
Sammy over takes Clay at the car deck and pulls him back into
the shadows--his knife to his throat.
SAMMY
Did you forget the plan?
Sammy stabs Clay's hand when he reaches for his gun.
Sammy pockets his knife and grabs Clay's gun.
CLAY
I saw Randy's car. I thought I
should follow him.
SAMMY
So where is he?
CLAY
He didn't have the money, so I let
him go. I got his car keys.
Sammy shoves him out onto the car deck.
SAMMY
Take me to it.
CLAY
There's no money in it. I already
checked. The bag is the only money
I saw.
SAMMY
Who the hell is the kid?
CLAY
What kid?
EXT. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND FERRY / LADIES ROOM - DAY
Randy is about to push the door open when an OLDER LADY comes
out. He smiles at her. She scowls back.
Holding the door open a crack, he yells in:
RANDY
Bobbi. Hurry up.
Smiling, he steps back to let ANOTHER WOMAN enter.
Bobbi appears with the baby carrier.
Randy looks at the small, vulnerable Stefan.
BOBBI
What took you so long?
RANDY
Clay.
BOBBI
What!
RANDY
He spotted me waiting to get on.
He took the money from Bimbo.
(extents his hand)
Give me the gun. I'll take the car
back.
BOBBI
Let him have the car. We'll walk
off.
RANDY
With Who? Tony? The car is the
only way you can hide Stefan. You
take the car. I'll take Clay to
the police.
Bobbi slips him the gun surreptitiously.
BOBBI
You think they'll believe you?
RANDY
With the money, Clay and your
tape. It's my best chance.... Give
me a couple of minutes. The car's
on the right outside toward the
front.
INT. RANDY'S CAR - DAY
Sammy is busy cutting open all the baby product packages.
CLAY
I was going to call you once I got
the car off the boat.
(holds the bag up)
We got a hundred thousand.
Sammy grabs the bag and checks it. He does a quick count and
throws a bundle of bills back into the bag in disgust.
SAMMY
This isn't more than twenty.
CLAY
The son of a bitch lied to me.
Sammy sticks his blade against Clay's throat, drawing blood.
SAMMY
He lied to you! All you had to do
was pop a couple of blown fiends
and grab a bag.
(Sammy waves the
knife around)
Look at the shit you've got me in.
CLAY
We can make it right. We can catch
them when they get off the boat.
SAMMY
What do I need you for?
Clay's eyes widen. He tries to get out of the car, but--
Sammy knifes him in the gut, pulling the blade up.
Sammy cleans his knife on Clay's shirt. He inspects his
clothes, grabs the money bag and gets out of the car.
INT. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND FERRY / CAR DECK - DAY
Randy approaches the car from the rear.
Clay's head leans against the door on the passenger side.
Gun ready, Randy jumps into the driver's seat.
He sees the blood pooling up on Clay's lap.
Randy looks away. Fights the urge to vomit.
He takes the spare car keys from the glove box.
INT. BAINBRIDGE FERRY / SUN DECK - DAY
In b.g. Bimbo has managed to free his hand from the seat.
Sammy hands Randy's car keys to Duffy.
DUFFY
Where's Clay?
SAMMY
In the car. Tell Marco to bring
the bitch to the exit. Then go
down and drive the car off.
DUFFY
Right
INT. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND FERRY / CAR DECK - DAY
Seattle skyline dead ahead.
People moving back to their cars.
Randy opens the passenger door and lowers the seat back.
He covers Clay's bloody stomach with his jacket.
Pushes Clay's body into the back.
Bobbi arrives with Stefan.
BOBBI
Oh, god, what did you do?
RANDY
I found him this way.
BOBBI
Get rid of him.
RANDY
Where? We dump him here and the
cops will be after us before we
clear the parking lot.
With a shove he gets Clay into the back.
A WALLET falls to the deck.
Randy pockets it and covers Clay with disposable diapers, etc.
He lifts the seatback up.
The cars in the neighboring row begin to move.
Randy runs around to the driver's side and gets in.
Fighting her revulsion Bobbi places Stefan's carrier into the
back next to Clay.
She starts to climb in, but...
Marco grabs her hair and pulls her out. Gun to her head.
Randy jumps out. Points his gun across the car top at Marco.
RANDY
Your move. I'll wait for the cops.
Marco glances at the people in the car behind Randy's looking
at him in shock. The cars moving by behind Randy.
MARCO
Get away from the car.
RANDY
Fuck you.
Marco drags Bobbi around the back of the car.
DUFFY
Fuck you.
Duffy FIRES. The bullet rips up the car roof next to Randy.
Randy FIRES. Duffy dodges behind a car.
The car in front of Randy's starts moving.
BOBBI
(screams)
Get Stefan out of here.
Randy hesitates. Jumps into the car and takes off.
Marco shoves Bobbi to Duffy and dives through the plastic
covering the blown out rear window.
INT. RANDY'S CAR / MOVING
Hanging half way out of the car, Marco slashes at the plastic
with his gun while hanging on for dear life.
Marco FIRES. Randy ducks.
The shot rips through the edge of the driver's seat and on
through to the engine compartment.
The car hits the ramp hard, nearly bouncing Marco loose.
Still firing, Marco grabs madly for a better hold and ends up
with Clay's shirt.
His shots rip up the front of the car, spidering the
windshield and driving Randy to crouch deeper into the corner.
Clay's body begins to slide, pulling Stefan with it.
EXT. RANDY'S CAR - DAY
The car rams into the car ahead, veers to the side,
straightens and accelerates.
Marco tumbles free and rolls into a kneeling position facing
the line of cars coming up behind. Clay's blood covers hand
and clothes. He lurches to his feet.
Cars swerve around him. He brings his arms up in a futile
attempt to ward them off.
A car slides into him, its driver leaning hard on the brakes.
Other cars smash into the stopped car.
Macro rolls off the hood and runs for the street.
INT. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND FERRY / PASSENGER DECK - DAY
Sammy glances over the railing at Marco's debacle.
SAMMY
What the hell's going on?
Duffy drags Bobbi up.
SAMMY
What are you doing here?
DUFFY
The guy got the car. Marco's
trying to get it back.
Bobbi tries to get free.
Sammy sticks his knife against her belly and pulls her face
up close to his.
SAMMY
I've had a fucking bad day. You
give me any trouble, I'll rip you
open right here.
Bobbi surrenders.
Duffy walks her off the ferry.
Sammy starts to follow when Bimbo hits him from behind and
grabs for the money bag.
Sammy shakes off the blow. Forces Bimbo against the railing.
BIMBO
The money's mine.
Sammy slices his ear and pushes him away.
SAMMY
Go play with yourself.
Bimbo clutches his ear and watches Sammy walk away.
Blood leaks from between his fingers.
EXT. ALLEY - DAY
Trailing smoke and flames, Randy skids the car into a
Dumpster. Grabbing the baby carrier and pack, he jumps out
and runs for cover.
Flames lick out around the sides of the car and then...
Explosion.
Randy is thrown to the ground, covering Stefan and the
carrier. Stefan cries. Randy shushes him.
EXT. SIT AND SPIN - DAY
As Randy approaches, the Lucky Time van pulls away from the
front of the store, leaving Sammy and Duffy at the curb.
They look around before entering.
RANDY
So much for plan B.
(looks at Stefan)
Now what?
Stefan begins to cry.
RANDY
Good idea.
Randy takes out his wallet and discovers it's Clay's.
Driver's license, Dallas address on a slip of paper--no money.
RANDY
Looks like we have to dip into the
kitty.
INT. MOTEL ROOM - LIGHT
Stefan on the bed placidly plays with Randy's SKIPPY STUFFED
ANIMAL.
Randy bandages his cuts and scrapes--new and old.
The television shows firemen swarming over the hulk of his
car, removing a charred body.
TELEVISION
The body is believed to be that of
Randy Cage who has been the
subject of a four state manhunt
since the brutally murdered bodies
of his ex-girlfriend and a male
acquaintance were found in his Bay
Area apartment.
People familiar with the
investigation say that organized
crime involving gambling and drugs
was involved. Other witnesses have
said that this is the same car
involved in the shoot out on the
Bainbridge Island Ferry earlier in
the day.
Randy takes Clay's California drivers license from the wallet
and compares the picture to his own face in the mirror.
He adopts Clay's scowl and holds his hair back. It looks
pretty close, if he cuts his hair shorter. Examines the slip
of paper with the Dallas address
RANDY
Thank you, Mr. Sinclair, for a
ticket to a new life.
Randy looks at Stefan playing on the bed.
RANDY
What do I do with you?
Stefan smiles back at him.
RANDY
Don't look at me like that. Your
mother wouldn't help me. She
wouldn't give a rat's ass....
Neither would Peggy.
(pause)
You're right. I'd be running away
again.
INT. GRUNGY OFFICE - LIGHT
Bobbi tied to a chair.
Mark of the chain on her throat. One eye turning black.
Sammy, behind a desk, stirs her possessions.
Bobbi's CELLULAR PHONE RINGS. Sammy picks it up.
RANDY (TELEPHONE)
Let me talk to Bobbi.
SAMMY
Where's my money, shithead?
RANDY (TELEPHONE)
Food court Westlake Center noon
tomorrow. If I don't see Bobbi,
I'm gone.
(Hangs up)
Sammy hangs up the telephone.
INT. JUICY BURGER / BAR - DAY
The bar phone rings. Bartender answers it.
BARTENDER
The Burger.
RANDY (TELEPHONE)
Let me talk to Tony.
BARTENDER
Tony who?
RANDY (TELEPHONE)
Tell him if he wants to see Stefan
to be at the Westlake Center food
court noon tomorrow.
INT. TRUDY'S APARTMENT - DAY
Door knock. Trudy opens the door, leaving the chain on.
Randy, hair cut short and wearing a new outfit, stands there
with Stefan and his appurtenances.
TRUDY
Don't you look pretty.
(eyes the baby
carrier)
You two have been busy.
Trudy takes off the chain and lets him in. The room is
crowded with baskets of wash and an ironing board.
TRUDY
Come on into the kitchen. The day
doesn't start until I finish my
coffee.
INT. TRUDY'S KITCHEN - DAY
Trudy turns off the RADICAL LEFT TALK RADIO.
Randy sets Stefan's carrier on the table.
TRUDY
Coffee?
Randy wags no. Trudy starts playing with the baby.
TRUDY
Aren't you a pretty little guy.
What's his name?
RANDY
Stefan... Ah... I'd like you to
look after him for a few hours.
TRUDY
(playing with baby)
I'd be glad to do it.
RANDY
You can't take him to the Sit and
Spin. They'll be looking for him
there.
TRUDY
Is it that bad?
RANDY
One way or another I work off the
bad karma today.
(hands her a package)
If you don't hear from me, mail
this to the police.
(hands her an
envelope)
If his mother, Bobbi, calls, give
her this. Be careful how you meet
her. The pack of wolves might have
her.... If you don't hear from
either of us by tomorrow.
TRUDY
I'll wait a little longer. I've
got some bad karma to work off,
too.
INT. WESTLAKE CENTER / FOOD COURT - DAY
Packed with the usual mall lunch time crowd.
Bobbi sits sullenly watching Sammy shake hot sauce onto the
Mexican Special. A high collar and sunglasses hide her
bruising. Sammy is showing some wear and tear, too.
BOBBI
What makes you think he'll come?
Sammy runs his hand along her face. Rests it on her shoulder.
SAMMY
I'm not sure. Either because he
likes you or he hates me. I'll ask
him when he gets here.
BOBBI
Maybe he'll bring the police.
SAMMY
He's long past going to the
police. This is between us. Winner
take all.
EXT. WESTLAKE CENTER / MONORAIL STATION - DAY
Marco, his arm in a sling, guards the food court entry.
Randy gets off the train and walks past Marco who fails to
recognize him.
INT. WESTLAKE CENTER / FOOD COURT - DAY
Randy, carrying a coffee, picks a table where he can watch
Sammy and Bobbi.
INT. WESTLAKE CENTER / FOOD COURT - DAY
Bimbo, ear bandaged, Santo and Darius get off the elevator.
BIMBO
Nothing happens until I get Stefan.
Santo nudges Bimbo. Nods toward Sammy and Bobbi.
BIMBO
No matter what happens, the pig
doesn't leave here alive.
Sammy watches Bimbo's approach in total disbelief.
SAMMY
I can't believe it. The son of a
bitch set me up.
INT. WESTLAKE CENTER / FOOD COURT - DAY
Randy, pay phone in hand, waits for Bimbo to reach the table.
Then dials 911.
RANDY
(frantic)
They're holding up the food court.
They've got guns. Hurry.
Randy calmly drops the phone and walks towards their table.
As he walks, he takes a JUMBO PEPPER SPRAY from his pack,
wedges it open and sets it in a planter under an air vent.
He takes out another can.
INT. WESTLAKE CENTER / FOOD COURT
Bimbo stands over the two.
BIMBO
(to Bobbi)
Where's Stefan?
SAMMY
The shithead has him.
BIMBO
You're a dead man.
SAMMY
Yeah, yeah, we're all dead men.
Look it, grease ball, wise up. The
shithead set us up so we'd kill
each other. Then he and the bitch
walk off with everything.
BIMBO
(confused)
Who are you talking about?
Sammy gestures to the seat opposite.
SAMMY
Let's talk before we start killing
each other.
Unsure, Bimbo reluctantly sits.
BOBBI
He's too smart for the two of you.
SAMMY
Shut up.
(to Bimbo)
Let's work out a deal. All I want
is my money. You can have the kid.
I'll even give you back your
twenty thousand.
Sounds of commotion
People scatter from the spreading pepper spray mist.
BIMBO
(glancing at the
panic)
I don't need you?
Bimbo reaches across the table for Bobbi's wrist.
SAMMY
(exasperated)
It always has to be a big fucking
deal.
Sammy spikes Bimbo's hand to the table with his knife.
Bimbo screams and grabs the knife hilt.
Sammy jerks Bobbi to her feet.
Jams a silenced automatic into her side.
SAMMY
Give me a reason.
People screaming, running for the escalators and stairs, etc.
Duffy joins them as escort.
Sammy sees the crowd backing up by the escalator.
SAMMY
The stairs. Watch for the shithead.
Santo steps into their path.
Duffy fires(SILENCED), putting two rounds into Santo.
The three step around the stunned Santo.
Santo staggers into a group of women. Falls to their feet.
When a woman see her clothes covered with blood, she screams.
Darius FIRES, hitting Duffy. Duffy staggers backward and
falls over the railing onto the escalators.
The gun shot silences the crowd and stops everyone. Then--
Blind panic grips the crowd. Screams echo through the mall.
Dragging Bobbi, Sammy retreats, placing the crowd between him
and Darius.
Undeterred, Darius takes aim, but Bimbo stops him.
BIMBO
NO. Stefan first.
Blood drips from the handkerchief wrapped around Bimbo's hand.
Bimbo takes Darius's gun. Shifts it to his good hand.
The crowd surge carries Sammy onto the balcony.
Bimbo pushes Darius toward one door and heads for the other.
EXT. WESTLAKE CENTER / BALCONY - DAY
Sammy spots the stairs and moves toward them.
Randy steps into his path.
Sammy's eyes widen with recognition.
Randy sticks a STUN GUN against his neck.
RANDY
Remember me, shithead?
Jolted, Sammy releases Bobbi and drops, a twitching heap.
BOBBI
Where's Stefan?
Randy hands Bobbi a YELLOW PLASTIC RAINCOAT and SCARF.
Pushes her into a corner.
RANDY
He's safe. Put these on.
BOBBI
Where is he?
Randy hands her a piece of paper. Nudges her into motion.
RANDY
If I don't make it, call this
number. Take the stairs on the
other side of the food court.
BOBBI
What are you going to do?
RANDY
Finish it.
EXT. WESTLAKE CENTER / BALCONY
Sammy on his hands and knees tries to recover from the jolt.
People trip over him.
Bimbo leans over the railing and signals Dimitri waiting in
the plaza below.
BIMBO
Dimitri, the stairs.
Dimitri acknowledges with a wave and runs to the stairs.
Bimbo turns and looks down at Sammy.
He raises his gun.
BIMBO
Pray to your god, pig.
Sammy grabs Bimbo's pant cuffs and lifts up, flipping Bimbo
over the railing of the balcony as he fires.
Bimbo's STREAM OF SHOTS shatter the windows behind Sammy.
EXT. WESTLAKE CENTER / STAIRS
Dimitri watches Bimbo splatter on the pavement below.
Going berserk, he pushes his way up the stairs.
EXT. WESTLAKE CENTER / BALCONY
People drop to the floor, Huddle in the corners.
Sammy lurches to his feet.
Randy stuffs the stun gun in his belt.
Loops a rope around Sammy's wrist and attempts to tie his
hands behind his back.
Sammy resists. Spotting Darius charging knife drawn, he
lurches, putting Randy between him and Darius.
The knife rips through Randy's pack and is torn from his grip.
Randy stumbles and falls.
Sammy jerks the stun from his belt and stabs it at Darius.
Darius drops.
Sammy kicks the crap out of Darius, swearing at him.
He gives Randy a jolt. Randy does a landed fish flop.
Sammy puts the chain around his neck, pulls him to his feet
and gets in his face.
SAMMY
Guess what, shithead? My stock
went up thirteen points today, but
because of you the bastards sold
it yesterday. I'm going to enjoy
killing you.
RANDY
You kill me and you'll never see
the money.
SAMMY
Fuck the money. I'm going to give
you pain you cannot even image.
Sammy drags him back into the mall.
INT. WESTLAKE CENTER / FOOD COURT
Putting on the raincoat, Bobbi crosses the food court.
Agitated, frightened, she finishes buttoning the raincoat.
Look up and Runs into Marco.
She struggles. He pulls a gun from his sling.
Sammy drags Randy up. He has the chain around his neck.
MARCO
Where to?
Sammy looks around at the thinning crowd and nods toward the
monorail station exit.
INT. WESTLAKE CENTER / BALCONY
Dimitri bends over Darius who is shaking off the stun.
DIMITRI
Where is he?
Darius motions toward the food court.
EXT. WESTLAKE CENTER / MONORAIL STATION
Passengers jam the monorail's entrance ramp.
A stream of expletives and the use of the stun on a woman too
slow to get out of the way clears a path.
Marco and Bobbi board. The door is closing as Sammy shoves
Randy on.
A SHOT spiders the window next to Sammy and goes on to drop
a passenger on the train.
Sammy ducks and dives onto the monorail as the door closes.
More SHOTS.
Dimitri hurdles the boarding ramp as it rotates to a barrier.
He jumps onto the train's bottom skirt as it starts to move.
Smashing his fist through the spidered glass, Dimitri grabs
the interior handrail and leans in, taking aim at Sammy.
Sammy lunges at Dimitri with the Stun.
Dimitri deflects it, knocks it to the floor.
His SHOT goes wild.
They clutch. Darius trying to aim his gun at Sammy. And Sammy
trying to shove him off the train.
The train picks up speed.
Darius head butts to no effect.
Sammy bites Darius's nose, taking off a chunk.
Pain and shock. Darius lets up for an instant and is gone.
He falls head first.
Dives through the windshield of a car on the roadway below.
The car veers, plows through a store front.
Explodes, showering everything with glass.
Waving a cheerful goodbye to Dimitri, Sammy turns as--
Randy rams into him, forcing him back over the handrail.
Grabbing his leg, Randy lifts him over.
Sammy desperately claws out and catches the chain around
Randy's neck.
Randy is jerked forward. Clutching the chain Randy gets
enough slack to get a hand under it.
Leaning back, Sammy struggles for footing on the train's
skirt, He swings around, grasping for the handrailing.
Eyes popping, Randy gropes for the Stun on the floor.
He brushes it with his finger, pushing it just out of reach.
He tries to drag the weight around his neck to it.
A TRAIN approaches on the parallel track.
Sammy sees the train. Redoubles his efforts to reach the
handrail.
He catches one hand, but cannot pull himself in.
He releases the chain and grabs on with his second hand.
Randy drops to the floor gasping for air.
Sammy starts to haul himself in when Randy plants a foot in
his chest and shoves him off.
Sammy bounces off the passing train and falls--
Landing with a thud on the pylon supporting the tracks.
Gasping for air, Randy hauls himself up. Tears off the chain,
He sees Sammy sprawled on the pylon between the tracks.
Hanging off the back of the train, he drops to the track.
He rolls over a few times and almost drops off the edge, but
he catches himself.
He runs back toward Sammy.
They grapple. Struggle to and fro on the pylon.
Sammy trips Randy and falls on top of him.
He pushes Randy's face toward the high voltage line.
RANDY
You'll kill us both
SAMMY
Who gives a shit?
Randy works a leg under Sammy and shoves out with all his
might, flinging Sammy back over the track.
Sammy falls on a car roof, rolls off and lands on his feet.
And is blasted by the next car.
He's hurled against a tree. Slides to the ground.
Lowering himself, Randy drops to the ground and runs to Sammy.
Sammy, his body broken, extends his arm to grab Randy, but he
lacks the strength.
SAMMY
You son of a bitch.
His arm drops to his side. He dies.
As the crowd gathers, Randy puts on his skates and takes off.
EXT. MONORAIL TERMINAL - DAY
Blending with the crowd, Marco escorts a resisting Bobbi away
from the terminal.
Randy skates up and stops twenty feet in front of them.
RANDY
Let her go. She doesn't know where
the money is.
Marco holds the gun to her head.
MARCO
But you do.
RANDY
She doesn't mean that much to me.
Randy counts out a wad of money and fans it for Marco.
RANDY
Seven hundred. That's all she's
worth. Let her go and it's yours.
Marco glances around at the crowd. This isn't the place.
He releases Bobbi who runs away.
MARCO
This isn't over. I'll find you.
RANDY
You can try.
Randy places the money on the ground and takes off.
INT. BUS STATION - DAY
The usual sounds and commotion.
Randy and Bobbi, cleaned up and looking pretty, sit on a
bench. Stefan in a carrier on Bobbi's lap.
Randy hands her the video tape and an envelope with money.
RANDY
Here. Whatever else happens I
don't need this.
Bobbi accepts them. Checks the money in the envelope. She
struggles to find the right words,
BOBBI
I... I don't... Why don't you come
with us? Cedar Mills is a good
place to hide. Even if the police
don't looking for you, the others
know you're alive.
RANDY
I'm looking for a life, not a
place to hide.
The LOUD SPEAKER announces the bus for Spokane is boarding.
They stand.
RANDY
Good luck.
Bobbi kisses Randy on the forehead.
BOBBI
Thanks.
Randy watches Bobbi exit to her bus carrying Stefan and a bag
slung over her shoulder.
INT. PLANE BOARDING GATE - DAY
Randy hands his ticket the ATTENDANT, who rips off the stub
and checks the name before returning the ticket to Randy.
ATTENDANT
Is your trip to Dallas for
business or pleasure, Mr. Sinclair?
RANDY
Both. It'll make a new man of me.
