BLACK SCREEN.

Over the black screen we hear a woman's voice. The voice sounds a little
old and feeble.

                        WOMAN'S VOICE
A brave man once said, "the criminal mind is
always changing in radical ways". I tend to
agree with this. I have been close to the
              criminal mind...I've been inside. Sometimes
              it's deranged, sometimes it's pure evil...but
              sometimes...it's both...

FADE IN:
EXTERIOR. NEW YORK STREETS - DAY

We PAN INTO an alley, which holds TWO MEN. One of them is named DAVID
PARKER, 23 years of age, the other is named JASON HAMMET, also 23 years
old. We come into the middle of their conversation.

                      JASON
            Alright then, when did Spider-Man
            first appear?

                      DAVID
            Too easy...Amazing Fantasy number 15.

                      JASON
            Superman?

                      DAVID
            Action Comics number 1.

                      JASON
            Batman?

                      DAVID
            Detective Comics number 27.

                      JASON
            First appearance of the Lizard?

                      DAVID
            Amazing Spider-Man number 6.

A pause.

                      DAVID
            There isn't anything about comic
            books you can't ask me.

INTERIOR. CONVENIENCE STORE

The woman behind the counter, JENNIFER LYNNE, hands bags to an elderly
woman.

                    JENNIFER
Have a good day, Mrs. Martin.

She smiles and exits the store as Jennifer's boss, ERIC HARRUS, comes
from the back room.

                    ERIC
You sure you can handle the store
            by yourself?

He finishes putting on a coat to match the suit he's wearing.

                   JENNIFER
            Eric, you're daughter's getting
            married today. I think that's a bit
more important than tending to a
            convenience store.

                   ERIC
I know but...I just don't want you to
            panic if something goes wrong.

                   JENNIFER
            What could go wrong?

Eric cringes.

                   ERIC
Don't say that. Don't you know when you
ask that question, something does go wrong.

                   JENNIFER
Makes things more interesting if you ask me.

Eric smirks and starts to head out, but stops.

                   ERIC
            Damn.

                  JENNIFER
            What?

He walks to the back room.

                  ERIC
            I forgot my tie.

EXTERIOR. ALLEY - DAY

                 SCREEN TEXT
            12:07 PM.

David and Jason look at the guns placed inside their pants.

                 DAVID
            You ready?

                 JASON
            Are you?

                 DAVID
I was born ready for this.

INTERIOR. CONVENIENCE STORE

Jennifer is reading a magazine at the counter as David and Jason enter,
drawing their guns.

               JASON
Alright this is a robbery. Get down
on the ground right fucking now!

Jennifer steps back in shock as Eric comes out from the back. Jason
points his gun at Jennifer.

               JASON
What are you deaf? Get down on the
           ground!

David points his gun at Eric.

               DAVID
           You too.

Eric complies as Jason runs up and begins to take money from the
register. As he does, David notices Jennifer going for a button
underneath the register.

              DAVID
Hey! What the fuck is that?

He fires a bullet into it. The button sparks and steel shutters slam
down, locking them in. No one can get in, and no one can get out.

              JASON
          What did you just do?

Jason runs up and fires a shot into the shutters--nothing. David runs
over and points his gun directly in Jennifer's face.

              DAVID
         How do we open them?

Frightened, Jennifer pauses.

                     DAVID
              Answer me!

                     JENNIFER
                    (stammering)
I don't know how to get it open if
the button is destroyed. The only
person who would know is our general
              manager.

David looks at Eric.

                     DAVID
             Are you the manager?

He shakes his head yes.

                     DAVID
             Get him on the phone.

Jason stands up and walks over to the phone. He puts his hand on it, but
stops when David puts the gun on his temple.

                     DAVID
You mention that you're being robbed,
I splatter your brains all over this
              store. Got it?

He nods slowly and picks the phone up. His general manager, TODD ROSS,
answers.

                    TODD
                    (over phone)
              Hello?

Eric tries hard to maintain a steady voice.

                    ERIC
               Hey Todd, it's Eric.

                    TODD
               Oh hey, what's going on?

                    ERIC
I was just wondering how to get the
steel shutters open if the button is
               broken?

                    TODD
                    (confused)
              Why? Is it broken?

                    ERIC
No no...I just need to know in case
              something happens. Jennifer has the
              store alone tonight.

                    TODD
Oh...well...I've got a shitload of work
tonight. So I'll come down and show you
              tomorrow morning. Sound good?

                    ERIC
              Uh yeah...that sounds great.

                    TODD
              Alright. See ya tomorrow.

                    ERIC
              Bye.

They hang up.

                   DAVID
              Well?

                    ERIC
                    (scared)
              He'll be here tomorrow morning.

                    DAVID
Tomorrow morning?! Well how the fuck are
we supposed to get out of here? Where are
              the windows?

                    ERIC
              There aren't any.

                   DAVID
What kind of dumbass doesn't put windows
in a convenience store? And what kind of
manager doesn't know how to open the damn
shutters when the button is broken?

Eric tries to look for an answer, but can't come up with anything.

                  DAVID
              Just sit down.

He sits on the floor.

                 JASON
The cops don't know we're here do they?

                 DAVID
             I don't think so.

A short silence.

                 JASON
But if someone tries to get in the store,
             they'll tell the cops.

                 DAVID
             Shit.

David runs over and kicks the shutters again and again. Jennifer's
scared voice is heard over the kicking.

                 JENNIFER
             You could try the basement.

They stop and look at Jennifer.

                  DAVID
             What?

                 JENNIFER
There's a hatch that leads into the
basement. You might be able to get out
             through the door there.

David and Jason look at each other, then grab Jennifer.

                  JASON
             Where?

She points to a small carpet in the middle of the store. David lets go
of her and runs over to the hatch. He opens it and crawls down, followed
by Jason, who looks at Jennifer and Eric before going down.

                  JASON
             Don't move.

He crawls down.

INTERIOR. BASEMENT

They walk through the basement. However, they soon find out this is
nothing more than a big freezer.

                  DAVID
             Damnit!

David runs up and climbs up the ladder and sees Eric on the phone,
obviously calling 911. He runs over and punches him onto the floor, then
hangs the phone up.

                  DAVID
What the fuck are you doing?! Do you
            think we're stupid?!

David points his gun at him as Jason closes the hatch. Jennifer shouts
out.

                JENNIFER
            Don't!

He stops and looks at her.

                JENNIFER
He has a daughter who's getting married
           today. Please don't...

David pauses, then points his gun at her.

                DAVID
What if I shot you instead?

Jason speaks up.

                JASON
           David...

David looks over at Jason.

                JASON
          Just...just calm down...

A silence.

EXTERIOR. STORE - MID-DAY

A PANNING SHOT of the store.

                SCREEN TEXT
           2:49 PM.

INTERIOR. STORE

David sits on the edge of the counter, Jason sits across from him, and
Eric and Jennifer and on the ground next to each other. A long pause is
broken by Jason.

                 JASON
          First appearance of Wolverine?

David, confused by Jason's question, turns to him.

                 DAVID
          What?

                 JASON
         First appearance of Wolverine?

                 DAVID
         Incredible Hulk number 180.

                 JASON
         Elektra?

                 DAVID
         Daredevil number 168.

                 JASON
         Silver Surfer?

                 DAVID
         Fantastic Four number 48.

A pause, then Jason stands up.

                 JASON
Jesus Christ, we've been here for
over two hours and not one person
         has shown up.

                         JENNIFER
Thursday is usually slow. The only
person that comes in is mostly Mrs.
                 Martin.

                         JASON
                 And where's Mrs. Martin now?

                         JENNIFER
She left before you came in.

Jason sighs in frustration.

                         JASON
Do you guys sell comic books here?

Eric points to the back. Jason motions for David to follow. They stand
and look at the comics. David scoffs at the designs.

                         DAVID
Man, they're still drawing them like
                that manga shit.

                         JASON
                Quit ragging on the Japanese.

                         DAVID
I'm not ragging on the Japanese, I'm
ragging on their designs. Why don't
you listen once and a while?

                         JASON
                         (smirking)
                Fuck you...

At the front of the store, Jennifer takes a pack of candy from the top
of the register.

                        JENNIFER
At least we're stuck in a place that
                has plenty of food.

Eric smiles and takes a peice from the bag.

Back with Jason and David, they continue to sort through the comic
books. Jason studies Jennifer from afar.

                          JASON
Is it just me, or is this chick hot?

                          DAVID
                She's alright.

A pause.

                          DAVID
I do find it weird you're drooling over
                a girl we robbed.

                           JASON
                Hey I'm not picky.

                           DAVID
No problems there. I once thought a chick
I got into an argument with over a parking
                space was hot.

At the front, Eric and Jennifer begin to come up with a plan.

                            ERIC
                Did they take their guns?

                           JENNIFER
Yeah. But I can't fire a gun. Can you?

A slight pause.

                            ERIC
                No.

                            JENNIFER
                Scratch that plan.

Eric then remembers something.

                             ERIC
Wait. Doesn't Mr. Angelino come in for
                his peppers every Thursday.

                            JENNIFER
                Yeah. I forgot.

                             ERIC
He may be our only chance.

                            JENNIFER
                But it's...

She glances at her watch.

                           JENNIFER
...five 'till three. He should've been
                here if he was coming.

He slumps down.

Back with Jason and David, they grab a good amount of comics and take
them back to the register.

EXTERIOR. STORE - DAY

A PANNING SHOT of the store.

                            SCREEN TEXT
              5:34 PM.

INTERIOR. STORE

David reads the newest issue of "The Fantastic Four" while Jason reads
"Superman". A breif pause is broken by Jason.

                            JASON
How many Batman villains can you name in
              thirty seconds?

David shrugs.

                            DAVID
              I don't know.

A pause.

                            DAVID
              Time me.

Jason looks at his watch.

                           JASON
              Go.

                           DAVID
              Joker, Catwoman...

David voice FADES OFF as we PAN OVER to Eric and Jennifer. who whisper
to each other.

                           JENNIFER
              We need a plan.

                           ERIC
              Look...

Jennifer looks up to see David's gun on the counter.

                            JENNIFER
He'd probably see me reaching for it.

                            ERIC
Yeah. And I don't want you to get hurt.
              I'll get it.

Eric slowly reaches up and begins to grab the gun.

                             DAVID
                        (stammering)
               Uh...Clayface...um...

He sees Eric reaching for his gun.

                             DAVID
               Hey!

He backhands Eric back onto the ground, then grabs his gun and points it
at him.

                             DAVID
You're lucky I don't blow your brains out
right here! What do you think, I'm fucking
               stupid?!

                             ERIC
I'm sorry. Please don't shoot me.

David lowers the gun.

                             DAVID
Don't fucking move. And I mean it. If you
move even inch, I'll kill you and her.

A pause.

                             DAVID
               Got it?

Jason nods slowly, full of fear.

EXTERIOR. STORE - MID-DAY

A car pulls up and ANTONIO ANGELINO exits.

INTERIOR. STORE

Jason and David look up from their comics.

                           JASON
Did you just hear a car door?

EXTERIOR. STORE - MID-DAY

Antonio pulls out his cell phone and dials 911.

                           OPERATOR
               911...

                          ANTONIO
Yeah I'm at the convenience store on
sixth street, and the steel shutters
are closed. I think you better come up
               and check on it.

                          OPERATOR
Thank you, sir. I'll send a unit out.

                          ANTONIO
               Alright. Bye.

Antonio hangs up and gets into his car.

INTERIOR. STORE

The silence is tense.

                           JASON
               Think it was the cops?

                           DAVID
They drove off, so I don't think so.

David turns to Jennifer.

                           DAVID
               Did you call anybody?

                           JENNIFER
               No.

                           DAVID
You better be telling the truth.

EXTERIOR. STORE - MID-DAY

Another PANNING SHOT.

                         SCREEN TEXT
               7:09 PM.

A squad car pulls up and OFFICER LARRY PAGE exits his car. He walks up
to the shutters and knocks on them as if they were a door.

                         LARRY
               Hello?

INTERIOR. STORE

                          DAVID
                       (whispering)
               Shit.

He knocks again.

EXTERIOR. STORE - MID-DAY

He pulls out his radio.

                         LARRY
               Officer Page to Officer Allen.

OFFICER DEREK ALLEN, Larry's partner, answers.

                        DEREK
              Allen here.

                        LARRY
I'm at the store, but there's no one in
here. It coulda been something as simple
              as a malfunction inside.

INTERIOR. STORE

Eric, wanting desperitely to get out, yells.

                        ERIC
              Help! We're in here!

David turns and fires a shot into Eric's chest, killing him instantly.
Eric falls back and lands as Jennifer screams.

EXTERIOR. STORE - MID-DAY

                       LARRY
                    (into the radio)
We've got one shot fired, followed by a
             scream. Requesting back up, over.

Larry puts the radio away and un-holsters his gun.

                       LARRY
This is the police. Is everything alright
             in there?

Nothing.

INTERIOR. STORE

Jason looks at Eric's dead body.

                       JASON
             Holy shit. You killed him!

                       DAVID
He was running his fucking mouth. If
             I didn't shoot him, we'd get caught.

                       JASON
Shooting him in the chest isn't exactly
             low profile.

                      DAVID
             I know...but...

A pause.

                     LARRY
                    (off-screen)
This is the police. Please open the shutters.

Jason and David look at each other, worried.

                     LARRY
                     (off-screen)
            Is everything alright in there?

EXTERIOR. STORE - MID-DAY

Larry runs around the store and spots a side door.

INTERIOR. STORE

As they stand in the tense silence, they hear the side door being kicked
open.

                     DAVID
            Shit.

INTERIOR. STOCK ROOM

Larry steps through cautiously.

                     LARRY
Hello? This is Larry Page with the NYPD. Is
           everything alright?

Larry comes through and sees Eric dead on the floor, Jennifer crying
beside his dead body.

                     LARRY
            What the hell?

Larry holsters his weapon and runs over.

                     LARRY
            What happened? Miss?

Jennifer continues to cry as Larry checks Eric's pulse...he's dead. As
Larry begins to speak into his radio, David runs up and cocks him in the
back of the head with his gun.

                      DAVID
How did you get in here?!

Larry doesn't respond. David points the gun down and fires a shot into
Larry's leg.

                      DAVID
            Fucking answer me!

Jason comes out from the aisle they were hiding in.

                      LARRY
            The back door...

Jason looks at David.

                      JASON
            We're out.

They run out of the store.

EXTERIOR. SIDE OF STORE - LATE AFTERNOON

Jason and David come running out just as a squad of police cars begin
arriving. Officers exit and draw their guns.

                     OFFICER
           Freeze! Drop your weapons!

Jason and David fire off some rounds from their handguns and run back
inside.

INTERIOR. STORE

As they come in, they are caught off guard by a shot from Larry's gun.
David looks at Larry with rage.

                    DAVID
             Motherucker!

David fires three shots into Larry's chest.

EXTERIOR. STORE - LATE AFTERNOON

The officer we saw a moment ago, PAUL LANES, turns to the other
officers.

                   PAUL
Stand down. We can't just barge in, there
could be hostages. Position snipers on the
corners of all buildings facing the convenience
store. I want no one getting in or out.

OFFICER GREG BARNES runs up.

                  GREG
Why not sneak in through the side door, sir?

                  PAUL
You have a lot to learn about police work,
officer Barnes. Alerting them could cause
harm to whateve innocent hostages, if any,
            there are in there.

INTERIOR. STORE

David and Jason begin to pace back and forth.

                     DAVID
What the fuck do we do now? We've killed
two people, cops are swarming outside, and--

Jason interrupts.

                     JASON
What do you mean "we"? You shot them both.

                     DAVID
Don't pin all of this on me. You're in this
just as deep as I am. The robbery alone will
            get ya five to ten.

Jason pauses, then walks off to the back.

                     JASON
            Fuck you.

                     DAVID
            Where are you going?

                     JASON
I'm turning myself in. If you're smart, you'll
            do the same.

David runs and tackles Jason. Their guns scatter across the floor. As
they fight, Jennifer looks at the guns across the floor. Suddenly,
Paul's voice booms in over a megaphone.

                     PAUL
            Attention! This is the--

EXTERIOR. STORE - LATE AFTERNOON

Officers have their guns drawn to the store.

                     PAUL
                   (cont'd)
--NYPD! Surrender whatever hostages you have,
and come out the back with your hands in the
           air.

INTERIOR. STORE

Jason and David look up and listen.

                   PAUL
If you surrender now, we will go easier on
           you.

A pause as Jennifer speaks up.

                   JENNIFER
             Okay...just put your hands up...

David and Jason look over to Jennifer, who is pointing one of their guns
at them.

                   JASON
            What the fuck?

David runs at her as Jennifer desperitely tries to pull the triger.
David backhands her onto the ground, the gun firing as it hits the
floor.

EXTERIOR. STORE - LATE AFTERNOON

The officers react to the shot from inside and take cover behind their
doors, waiting.

INTERIOR. STORE

David, who is now deranged and full of hatred, picks up the gun.

                   DAVID
They think we have hostages? We'll give 'em
          hostages.

EXTERIOR. SIDE OF STORE - LATE AFTERNOON

David comes out holding his gun to Jennifer's head. He comes out to the
front and locks eyes with Paul, almost taunting him.

                  DAVID
        We have demands...

Paul speaks into the megaphone.

                 PAUL
        And what are they?

As David lists his demands, Paul speaks out of the side of his mouth to
Greg Barnes.

                PAUL
Tell the snipers to take whatever shot they
        can get.

He nods and runs off.

EXTERIOR. ROOF - LATE AFTERNOON

The SNIPER is in position as Greg's voice comes over his radio.

              GREG
        Take whatever shot you get.

The SNIPER takes aim.

CUT TO:
POV OF SNIPER SCOPE

The rifle zooms in on David's head. As it steadies on his head, we CUT
AWAY from the scope to the view of the SNIPER.

He begins to fire until a BIRD flies up and obscures his view.
Surprising him, he stumbles back and fires by accident. The shot
ricochets off the ground next to David. He looks up and sees the SNIPER.

                DAVID
          Damn.

David takes Jennifer back inside. Paul sighs.

                 PAUL
          Shit.

INTERIOR. STORE

David throws Jennifer on the ground.

EXTERIOR. STORE - NIGHT

PANNING SHOT of the police officers and SNIPERS on the roof.

CUT TO:
News Broadcast.

A young woman named AMBER STONE reports on the hostage scene.

                       AMBER
I'm Amber Stone with channel four news. The
hostage situation at a small convenience store
is still going strong. The two men held the
store up this afternoon and have had it under
seige ever since. This is what officer Paul
            Lanes had to say.

CUT TO:
Paul being interviewed.

                       PAUL
Well we're trying the best we can to make
sure these hostages get out of here safely.
It's a little hard though, the criminal
mind is always changing in radical ways.

Suddenly, there's a gunshot and the image is destroyed. We PAN AWAY to
see David, smoke pouring from the barrel of his gun.

                     JASON
            You've lost it.

                     DAVID
            Fuck you...

                    JASON
No I'm serious. You've gone completely over
            the edge.

David runs over and points his gun in Jason's face.

                   DAVID
I dare you to fucking say that again.

A silence falls between them.

                  DAVID
           Fucking say it!!

Jason pushes David away. David points his gun and starts to fire, but
the phone rings. They both stare at the phone.

EXTERIOR. STORE - NIGHT

An officer hands Paul a cell phone.

                 PAUL
           Thanks.

Paul listens into the phone.

INTERIOR. STORE

David and Jason stare at the phone as it rings. David walks over and
picks the phone up. He doesn't say anything, he just listens. We
intercut between inside the store and outside of the store.

                  PAUL
           Hello?

Paul realizes what David is doing.

                  PAUL
This is Paul Lanes with the NYPD. Who's
           this?

No response from David.

                   PAUL
Don't you even want to tell me your name?

A short pause.

                   DAVID
           David Parker.

                   PAUL
Okay David, I want you to listen to me. I
want those hostages in there set loose. You
got me? I don't want them hurt.

                    DAVID
           I killed them.

                    PAUL
           What?

David begins to cry.

                     DAVID
            Well...the girl...she's still alive...but I
killed the cop and the manager.

                      PAUL
Officer Page? You killed Larry Page?

                      DAVID
            Yeah. I shot them both.

Paul sighs.

                       PAUL
What about the girl? You don't really wanna
             hurt her, do you?

                       DAVID
This all started out simply. We just wanted some
money. It wasn't even my idea.

                       PAUL
Do you have a partner in there, David?

                       DAVID
             Yeah.

David begins to cry even more now.

                        PAUL
And can you tell me his name?

David pauses.

                        PAUL
You're not gonna tell me his name are you?

                        DAVID
             No.

                        PAUL
Come on now, David...you want to give yourself
up don't you? It's not hard. All you have to do
is come out that back door. But first I want the
             hostages...please...

                        DAVID
             I can't...

David hangs up.

EXTERIOR. STORE - NIGHT

Paul loses the connection.

                       PAUL
             David? Hello?

Nothing.

                      PAUL
             Damnit.

INTERIOR. STORE

David takes his hand off the phone and slumps down to the ground,
sobbing.

INTERIOR. STORE

Jason and David sit next to each other.

                       JASON
David, are you afraid to die?

                       DAVID
Nah. I think death is something we should
all welcome. It's the end of one thing and
the start of something better. I've always
thought that when I die, I won't really be
dying...I'll just be moving from one place
             to another.

                        JASON
So you see death as just a move?

                        DAVID
                       (smiling)
Yeah. Packing up your things and moving. It's
like moving to a new city. New school, new
             people...new friends...

David looks at Jason, then smiles.

                        JASON
             I'm afraid to die.

                        DAVID
             Why?

                        JASON
I don't know. It just scares me. What if the
afterlife is just a big joke...and all you
really do when you die is just dissolve into
             nothing?

                        DAVID
Try not to think of it like that.

EXTERIOR. STORE - DAWN

A car pulls up. The general manager, TODD ROSS, exits. As he runs up to
the store, Paul stops him.

                      PAUL
            Excuse me...who are you?

                     TODD
Todd Ross, general manager. What the hell is
           going on here?

                    PAUL
           Why are you here?

                    TODD
I came down to open the shutters for Eric,
           then this happens.

                    PAUL
           You can get them open?

                    TODD
That's why I came here this morning. But I
came here early because of this.

                    PAUL
How do you get them open?

                    TODD
There's a mechanism in the stock room of the
store. If I can get to it, I'll be able to unlock
           them.

                    PAUL
Well there's really no need now. What we have now
is a hostage situation, not a lock smith problem.

Greg Barnes comes up to Paul.

                    GREG
Should we try talking them down again?

                    PAUL
           It's worth a shot.

INTERIOR. STORE

David turns to Jennifer.

                       DAVID
What about you? Are you afraid of death?

Jennifer is unsure of whether she should talk or not.

                      DAVID
Think of this as...off the record...

David puts his gun down and his hands up. Jennifer half smiles.

                      JENNIFER
I wasn't afraid of dying until today. When
you guys came barging in here, the only thing
I thought about was if I was going to die or
           not. I...

Jennifer pauses.

                     JENNIFER
           ...I'm not sure if I'm--

The phone rings. Jason and David stare at each other.

                    JASON
            Let me answer it.

Jason rises and picks up the phone.

                   JASON
           Hello?

                   PAUL
           Is this David?

                  JASON
          No. This is Jason...who's this?

                   PAUL
I'm Paul lanes with the NYPD. You sound a bit
more sane than your friend...so why don't we
strike a little deal? If you send out the
          hostages--hostage--alive...I'll make sure that
you get a shorter sentance than David does.

A silence falls between them.

                  PAUL
I realize you can't announce your betrayal over
          the phone...so if you're interested...just hang
up the phone in a fit of rage.

Jason pauses for a moment, then slams the phone down hard.

                  DAVID
          What happened?

                  JASON
I...he was just talking bullshit. Can you get me
          a drink over there?

                  DAVID
          Sure. What do you want?

                  JASON
          Whatever. Anything's fine.

EXTERIOR. STORE - DAWN

Paul smiles.

                 PAUL
We're in the clear. He's going for it.

INTERIOR. STORE

David stands at the freezer to get a drink as Jason pulls Jennifer up.
He hushes her questions.

                 JASON
          Shh...come on...

Jason leads her out.

EXTERIOR. STORE - DAWN

Paul and the rest of his officers watch with anticipation. Paul turns to
Greg Barnes.

                   PAUL
Alert the snipers that I want him shot
right upon exit. I want to take no chances.

He nods and runs off.

INTERIOR. STORE

David holds a glass bottle in his hands as he looks up and sees Jason
leading Jennifer out.

                  DAVID
           NO!

He drops the bottle, which shatters on the floor in slow-motion. He runs
forward and fires four twice, missing Jason on the first shot, but
getting him in the back on the second shot. Jason falls, blood pouring
out from his body. David grabs for Jennifer, but is too late. She runs
out of the back door.

EXTERIOR. STORE - DAWN

As Jennifer runs out, the SNIPER acts upon instinct of seeing someone
exit. Paul desperitely tries to stop him.

                  PAUL
         WAIT!

It's too late, the SNIPER fires, but soon realizes his mistake with a
gasp. The bullet peirces through Jennifer's shoulder. She stumbles down
onto the ground, not dead, but hurt. David stumbles out as well, the
SNIPER just missing him. The officers draw their guns.

                  PAUL
         Hands over your head! Now!

David fires a shot off, then takes cover. What follows is a brutal and
bloody shootout. After it dies down, Paul motions for them to rush him.
He then signals for paramedics for Jennifer. As the police come around
the corner, David fires a shot off and runs back around the store.

EXTERIOR. STORE - MORNING

We PAN AROUND and see David running around the store to the other side.
David runs out and shoots an officer. He dives into the officer's car
and takes off down the road.

                   PAUL
            God damnit!

He speaks into his radio.

                   PAUL
            Looks like he's heading north.

EXTERIOR. NEW YORK STREETS - MORNING

David speeds down the street in the stolen police car, cops behind him.

EXTERIOR. STORE - MORNING

Todd runs up to Jennifer, who is being loaded into the ambulance.

                   TODD
            Jennifer...

                   JENNIFER
             (weak, but still smiling)
I thought you were gonna open the shutters?

Todd smiles as the PARAMEDIC moves him away.

                    PARAMEDIC
Sir, she's gonna be fine. Please step away.

Todd complies and watches the ambulance drive off.

EXTERIOR. NEW YORK STREETS - MORNING

The pursuit is getting more and more intense now. It finally comes to a
stop on the George Washington Bridge, when they shoot his tires out.

              George Washington Bridge, 9:35 AM.

David comes to a screeching hault. The cops exit their cars and point
their weapons at the stopped car.

                    OFFICER #1
              Exit the vehicle now!

                    OFFICER #2
Come out with your hands on your head!

Another cop car pulls up and Paul exits. He joins the other officers as
the door opens and David exits, gun in hand.

                    OFFICER #1
              Drop the weapon!

David turns and walks to overlook the body of water below him.

                    DAVID
When I die, I want my ashes to be thrown
over this bridge. Okay Paul? Can you do
              that for me?

Paul is unsure of what to do.

                    PAUL
You're not gonna die, David. All you need to
do is put the gun down and put your hands up.

David looks up at the helicopters floating above him. He looks over the
bridge again, then turns to Paul, tears streaming from his eyes.

                    DAVID
What do you think about death, Paul?

                    PAUL
              What?

                    DAVID
I like to think of it as one big move.
It's like packing up your bags and
moving to a new state. New school, new
              people...new friends...

A pause.

                   DAVID
Or maybe the afterlife is a big joke.
Maybe when you die, you just dissolve
              into nothing.

David looks at his gun.

                  DAVID
It's too bad we couldn't been friends
              earlier in my life, Paul.

                  PAUL
We can still be friends. Come on, Dave.

Paul puts his hand out. David looks down at it, then steps backward.

                    DAVID
              Bye Paul...

David puts the gun up to his chin and fires. Blood sprays out from his
head as he stumbles back and falls over the bridge.

                    PAUL
              NO!

David's body splashes into the water. Paul looks over the bridge with a
saddened face.

FADE TO:
A series of clips put to a solem, depressing song. It includes shots of
the police fixing the situation, putting Jason Hammet's dead body into a
body bag, and many others. From the shot of Paul looking over the
bridge, pouring David's remains out into the river below.

FADE OUT.

Two ELDERLY WOMEN sit at a table. One of them reads from a book.

                    ELDERLY WOMAN #1
A brave man once said, "the criminal mind is
always changing in radical ways". I tend to
agree with this. I have been close to the
            criminal mind...I've been inside. Sometimes
            it's deranged, sometimes it's pure evil...but
            sometimes...it's both...

She looks at the other woman.

                   ELDERLY WOMAN #2
That was horrible what happened last year.
            Those kids...

She sighs.

                   ELDERLY WOMAN #1
Oh I know. The woman who wrote this book must
            be so traumatized.

We STEADY on the book as she closes it. The front reads...

"The Mind Of A Criminal"

"A Novel By Jennifer Lynne"

As they walk OUT OF FRAME, we see Jennifer Lynne sitting at the table
next to them. She smiles at the women's conversation.

FADE OUT.

THE END.
