CABBIE

(An original screenplay)

FADE IN:

EXT. HIGH SCHOOL CAMPUS - DAY

The students start bunching up and hurrying towards the campus building
as the school bell rings relentlessly. A minute passes by. Finally, the
ringing stops. A GRAY CAR PARKS UP AT THE CURB.

INT. CAR

It's VINCE TASKER'S car. Vince is at the driver's seat. Vince is about
51 years old. Her daughter sits beside him, she's about 14, very
pretty. Her name is AMY.

AMY
I told you, you didn't have to give me a lift. I could have gotten hear
faster.

VINCE
Okay. I was wrong.

AMY
You forgot your watch.

VINCE
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm just too... I can't think. I'm always
busy, Amy. That's a cop's life.

AMY
What are we gonna do with the six million?

VINCE
I don't know.

AMY
Have you cashed it yet?

VINCE
Tomorrow, I will. I've got a lot of work to do at the station. We had a
rigormortis situation yesterday---

AMY
Okay.

VINCE
And I have to supervise the autopsy of the stiff, tomorrow...

AMY
DAD.

VINCE
What?

AMY
Okay. Okay.

VINCE
So---

Amy gets off the car.
AMY
Bye.

VINCE
Should I pick you up... two?

AMY
It's one thirty dad. No thanks. You don't have to.

VINCE
All right.

Vince's car pulls away and starts to run real fast.

JACKIE
(V.O.)
So you're not in good terms with your dad?

AMY
(V.O.)
Never.

EXT. CAMPUS - DAY

Amy walks towards the campus building. This time there are lesser
students and pretty much everybody is in. Looks like Amy's late.

INT. CAMPUS CAFETERIA - DAY

JACKIE and Amy walk towards a table. Jackie is Amy's friend. She's
almost as pretty as Amy. Both of them are carrying trays. They sit on
either side of the same table and begin chatting.

JACKIE
Never?

AMY
Yup.

JACKIE
Ever since.

AMY
Well, I don't like the way he talks to me. He hates my guts. I feel the
same for him----

JACKIE
I see.

AMY
It's... it's just that we never get along.

JACKIE
What are you gonna do about it?

AMY
I saved up to three thousand bucks. Have it in my glass jar piggy bank.
JACKIE
Erm... I don't---

AMY
Been saving it for ... a year.

JACKIE
So---

AMY
I can run away with it. Pack a few things. Live a life on my own.

JACKIE
You're fucking crazy.

AMY
What should I do then, kill myself?

EXT. SIDEWALK, DOWNTOWN - DAY

A taxi is parked up at the sidewalk at this virtually deserted street.
It's downtown. Nobody seems to be busy around here. The driver gets out
of his vehicle. His name is BOBBY HAUSER. He meets a pretty woman at
the sidewalk. This woman is JENA. His girlfriend. Bobby is about 31
years old. Jena, the same. Jena's fine. She doesn't look like a hooker
or anything.

They start their conversation.

JENA
You're a worthless asshole.

BOBBY
Baby, come on, stop being---

JENA
Being what?

BOBBY
Jena, won't you give me. At least one minute. Sixty seconds to ex----

JENA
Explain what, Bobby?

BOBBY
Can't I just win with you. Just for once. I have something---

JENA
No. I ain't talking to you.

BOBBY
Come on, let's go for a ride. I'll---

JENA
What the fuck? You could get fired for giving me a lift... you're
obviously gonna do it for free, I don't wanna---

BOBBY
Baby, please.

JENA
No. Not to mention, you should be getting a better job. I don't wanna
be with you anymore.

A long pause.

BOBBY
Jena, are you ...

JENA
I mean what I say, baby. I'm sorry.

A TEENAGE KID walks towards Bobby. He's about 18. He taps Bobby in the
shoulder.

KID
Hey, brother, I gotta go somewhere f---

BOBBY
Oh. Okay.

INT. CAB

The cab drives through the same campus that Amy Tasker studies in. The
Kid gets off.

Bobby just lets his car sit near the curb. He's a little depressed. He
looks at his watch:

8:00 AM.

Bobby's face tightens.

TIME CUT: From 8:00 AM, Bobby's watch goes 1:18 pm. Jesus, he's been
waiting here five hours already.

A young man, late 20's wearing a ski cap enters Bobby's cab. He's at
the back seat. This man is CORKY. He also wears a sweater. Bobby's arm
is rested at the hand brakes.

BOBBY
Where to.

Just seconds later, Bobby feels the muzzle of a GLOCK pressed against
his elbow. He blanches right in his seat and turns pale. He sees the
gun, ready to shatter the joints of his arms.

BOBBY
Fuck!!!!!!

CORKY
Not so fast, mister.

The motherfucker just spoke in a Scottish accent.

BOBBY
What do you want? I have plenty of money.

Bobby motions his hand towards the glove of the car, and then Corky
pokes the back of Bobby's head with the gun.

BOBBY
It's not that I don't have a fucking thing to lose, just take whatever
you want... don't kill me!

INT. CAMPUS HALLWAY - AFTERNOON

Amy is walking towards the double doors already. She's just meters away
from getting the hell out of the school, and about to go home.

INT. CAB

Corky presses the gun against the back of the driver's seat. Bobby can
feel the sensation. Now he's scared shit. Corky hands Bobby a
photograph. It's a little blurd.

CORKY
You know her?

BOBBY
The daughter of the cop. Won six million. A radio show contest, on TV
last night... or two fucking nights ago...

Bobby starts to sweat.

BOBBY
I know. I know.

CORKY
She should come out any minute now.

BOBBY
So, what do you want me to do?

Corky pulls out another GLOCK from his pocket. It's a Glock 19, like
the gun he's holding.

BOBBY
No, I ain't holding no fucking Glock.

Lots of students start rumbling out of the campus building. LOTS AND
LOTS OF THEM.

CORKY
Snatch the kid.

Corky hands the gun to Bobby, who holds it reluctantly.

BOBBY
What... awww, come on. No. I can't fucking do---

CORKY
You---

Corky presses the gun against the back of Bobby's neck.

CORKY
---do what I tell you to do, motherfucker.

BOBBY
What the fuck am I supposed to do.

CORKY
You're a cab driver. You've obviously swindled some passenger, you know
some sly methods, you find a way to bring the fucking girl here.
Secretly.

BOBBY
No. That's just fucking stupid.

CORKY
Not so. There are lots of students. No one should notice you doing it.

BOBBY
No.

CORKY
If you fuck up. Move. Do something funny, I'll bolt out of this vehicle
and start shooting you, and the girl, and anyone I wanna shoot.

BOBBY
There are security guards. Maybe not outside of the building. But
inside.

CORKY
What if I told you that I'm suicidal.

Bobby grips the handgun tighter this time. Corky's ARM REACHES INTO THE
FRONT AND THEN PULLS THE SLIDE MOMENTARILY. Bobby sees a flash of
copper. He wasn't sure what he saw, but now he can assume that the
fucking gun is loaded!

CORKY
If you try to point the gun at me. Make a move that fucking threatens
me, you get a lead salad.

BOBBY
Fuck.

A long moment goes by.

CORKY
What the fuck are you waiting for. If you tell her this was my idea,
you fucking die. Got that?

BOBBY
Yes.

Corky sees Amy, already taking a stride towards the sidewalk.

EXT. CAMPUS - AFTERNOON

Bobby gets out of the vehicle and walks casually, towards Amy. Bobby
presses the Glock against Amy's left hip.

BOBBY
You scream you die. You move you die. Do as I fucking tell you.

Then Amy gets pale. And nervous.

AMY
What do you want?

Bobby pockets the gun.

BOBBY
I'll shoot you if you do something I don't want you to do.

AMY
What?

BOBBY
You see the cab parked up at the curb?

AMY
I see it.

BOBBY
The one with the guy at the back seat.

AMY
Yes.

BOBBY
Both of us walk slowly towards it.

AMY
What the fuck?

Bobby pulls out the gun once again, he presses it against Amy's hip.
Again. Bobby takes a look around him. A busy crowd of students anxious
to go home. Or anxious to head to their hangouts.

BOBBY
Listen, that motherfucker's gonna shoot us both if you don't do what I
tell you, now let's get inside the cab. And I'll figure things out.

AMY
No way.

BOBBY
(hushed)
I said if you do anything funny, if you scream, you die. Now follow
through.

AMY
Fuck. No.

BOBBY
Or I'll have no choice and I'll shoot you myself.

AMY
Fuck you. Look around you.

BOBBY
Let's just say I have nothing to lose. And I'm suicidal. Let's say the
man at the back seat of my cab is the same.

INT. CAB

Amy gets in the backseat and sits to the immediate left of Corky. Bobby
gets on the drivers seat and begins to drive.

CORKY
Step on it.

Bobby does so. The car runs faster. Corky punches Amy in the face, near
the nose.

AMY
AAAAAAHHRRGGGGGH!

Amy starts to cry.

AMY
What do you want?

CORKY
Radio contest. Six million. I want it.

AMY
Look, my dad...

CORKY
Fuck your dad. He'll do what I ask him to do.

Amy starts wiping her face. Her face turns red.

AMY
Please... don't hurt me.

CORKY
I just did. What the fuck is your point?

BOBBY
So, what's it gonna be?

CORKY
Did you fucking tell her---

BOBBY
I did as you told me, mister.

CORKY
Corky.

BOBBY
Mr. Corky.

CORKY
Just Corky.

BOBBY
Where to?

CORKY
Drive around the city until it gets dark.

BOBBY
What??!

CORKY
You have gas.

BOBBY
I know but---

CORKY
Am I too demanding to you.

BOBBY
No. No. Just---

CORKY
So just fucking drive God damn it!

BLAM! Corky fires his gun, startling both Bobby and Amy. Bobby's car
radio goes out in flames.

BOBBY
FUCK!!!!!!!!

CORKY
I just wanted you to know that this gun's real. And I ain't playing
here.

BOBBY
FUCK YOU!!!

CORKY
Hey, watch it.

BOBBY
What do you want?

CORKY
My gun. Give it back to me.

With his left hand, still steering the wheel, Bobby digs into his
pocket with his right and pulls out the Glock that Bobby gave him.

TIME CUT:

INT. CAB - NIGHT

It's dark already. Amy now has a bruise on her face.

AMY
Please... let me go.

CORKY
Not yet.

BOBBY
So?

CORKY
Twenty fifth and third. There's a brownstone. I'll tell you where to
stop where to go.

INT. APARTMENT BUILDING - NIGHT

Corky, Bobby, and Amy walk up the stairs. The apartment is all dark and
it's basically deserted. Very few tenants.

CORKY
As always, you do something funny. You fucking die.

INT. CORKY'S APARTMENT ROOM - NIGHT

Corky is a fucking slob. His apartment room is a shithole, it's all
messed up, the floors are supported by rusty nails, he only has a bunk
bed. His bathroom is open and it's all dirty.

CORKY
I'm tired of living in this shithole.

Bobby and Amy sit on the floor.

BOBBY
So your parents dissed you and never left Scotland even just to visit
you?

Corky points his gun to Bobby. He presses the trigger.

BOBBY
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Corky doesn't pull it anyway.

CORKY
I'm British. Raised by Scottish parents. Grew up here. My mom and dad
are dead now. Why do you give a fuck?

BOBBY
(gasping)
I don---

CORKY
Shut the fuck up.

Corky bends down, and grabs Bobby by the shirt, and Corky hurls Bobby's
body forward. Bobby falls down prone.

BOBBY
Stop this!

Amy can't believe what's happening here.

BOBBY
What do you want?

Corky trains his gun to the telephone resting on a small round wooden
table.

BOBBY
What?

CORKY
You know what I want.

INT. TASKER HOME - NIGHT

Vince is restless. Amy hasn't gotten home yet and she usually doesn't
return so late from school. If she had an agenda, she'd tell her dad,
even if they are two people who never get along. Vince is in his living
room sitting on a couch. The telephone rings. Vince takes the call.

BOBBY
Do you wanna see Amy again, Tasker?

VINCE
Who the fuck is this? What did you do to my Amy?

BOBBY
I want the six million. Cash it in tonight, in unmarked bills, put it
in two backpacks or satchels...

VINCE
Wait, wait, who the fuck is this-------

CUT TO:

INT. CORKY'S APARTMENT ROOM

Corky's Glock is pressed on Bobby's temples. It gets pressed harder.

BOBBY
Arrrgh!

INT. TASKER HOME

Vince still on the phone.

VINCE
Who the fuck do you think you are, I will get you, I am a---

BOBBY
If you want your daughter back. Deliver the money in three hours.
There's only one---

VINCE
Hey!

BOBBY
(coughs)
Only one trash receptacle in the park at fifty-fourth boulevard
midtown. It's the red metal one. Put the money there. Three hours. Or
you won't ever see your kid again.

The line goes dead.

INT. CORKY'S APARTMENT ROOM - NIGHT

Bobby's under a lot of pressure. He lets go, and falls on his back,
just near the table where Corky's telephone sits. Bobby sees Amy just
across him. Amy is scared shit. Now she's as pale as a ghost.

CORKY
Well, you didn't sound scary enough.

BOBBY
How the fuck was I supposed to sound?

AMY
If my dad gives you the six million, you'll let me go?

Corky approaches Amy, who's still sitting on the floor.

CORKY
You shut your bloody mouth.

Corky kicks Amy hard at the side of her right knee. Amy screams.

CORKY
I'm not letting the two of you go. Chances are, I'll kill you both,
whether I get the money or not.

BOBBY
Well, I better get my share of the money. I helped you out. Don't
forget that.

CORKY
What?

BOBBY
We split. Fifty-fifty.

Corky pistol-whips Bobby in the face.

BOBBY
AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CORKY
You shut the fuck up.

INT. POLICE STATION - NIGHT

Vince talks to MARION, another cop. His friend. She is about 25 years
old, brown hair.

VINCE
I need your help---

Vince is all sweaty. He can hardly breath.

VINCE
Marion,

MARION
What happened, Vince?

VINCE
I need you to---

MARION
What?

VINCE
I---

INT. CORKY'S APARTMENT - NIGHT

Amy still sitting on the floor. Bobby just a few meters from her, also
on the floor.

CORKY
I bet you miss daddy already.

AMY
I don't give a shit. I don't give a shit. I don't care if I don't see
him again, I don't care if he---

CORKY
What?

Corky bends down, on his knees and edges close to Amy. Corky puts his
gun on Amy's forehead. Amy starts to cry. Corky presses the gun harder
on Amy's skin.

CORKY
So you won't mind if I kill you right now.

AMY
I--- I---

CORKY
(mockingly)
I--- I--- I--- SHUT UP!

AMY
I don't wanna die. I don't like my dad, but I don't wanna die. Okay?

Corky withdraws the gun, puts it in his pocket. Amy sees this. The gun
dangles slightly from his pocket. She can see part of the frame. Well,
her dad can do better, at least he has a holster.

BOBBY
You're a fucking liar, Scottish. You don't have the guts to kill us,
you don't have it in you---

Corky trains his weapon to Bobby. BLAM! He fires it. Bobby flinches.
Luckily, the bullet misses him.

BOBBY
Jesus!

CORKY
I'll kill you later anyway. Aren't you glad that I missed.

Bobby turns his head a little, enough to see the bullethole in the
cement wall he's leaning on.

BOBBY
Calm down, brother.

CRASH! A sound is heard just outside the door.

Someone hit the door real hard! Someone's outside! Corky, Amy and
Bobby's attention are now on the door that's the only way out of this
apartment room. Corky gets up, he threatens Amy and Bobby with his gun.

CORKY
(hushed)
Get inside the closet.

Amy and Bobby get inside the HUGE CLOSET. Corky shuts the closet door
silently. The banging of the door continues.

VINCE
(O.S.)
THIS IS THE POLICE! OPEN THE DOOR! OR I'M GONNA HAVE TO OPEN THIS
FUCKING DOOR MYSELF!!!

The closet is real dark.

But it's not so dark, that Bobby can see an UZI submachine gun sitting
on the floor! Corky hands Bobby the same Glock that he handed him
earlier. Bobby takes the gun, again, reluctantly.

BOBBY
(hushed)
What the fuck am I supposed to do with this?

CORKY
(hushed)
Obviously a bloody cop who traced the phone call.

BOBBY
(hushed)
Well, you were stupid enough to make me dial the number.

CORKY
(hushed)
Shut up. Keep him busy. Ask for the money. Tell him to let go of his
weapon. He has a gun. Don't let him use it, tell him to let go of it.
Tell him to give you the money. Or you'll shoot him.

BOBBY
(hushed)
It's not as fucking easy as it sounds.

VINCE
(O.S.)
I'M GIVING YOU FIFTEEN SECONDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CORKY
(hushed)
You remember what I did to your car radio. I'll do that to you. This
time with my Uzi if you do something I don't like. You, the cop, and
this kid over here.

Bobby STEPS OUT OF THE CLOSET AND CLOSES THE DOOR GENTLY.

THE DOOR LEADING IN AND OUT OF THE APARTMENT ROOM COMES APART AND
CRASHES ON THE FLOOR! Vince Tasker stands on the doorway, Vince draws a
.45 and aims at Bobby, who's holding his Glock, but not aiming at
anything. Vince steps forward, gun still pointed at Bobby.

VINCE
Where's my daughter?

BOBBY
Don't shoot me.

VINCE
Where's my daughter???!!!

This time Bobby assumes shooting stance, but with only one hand. He's
very clumsy with the gun. But at least he has some potential. Either of
them can kill either one with just the pull of the trigger.

BOBBY
Drop the fucking gun.

Vince does so. The .45 is now at Vince's foot.

VINCE
I just want my daughter, that's all.

BOBBY
Where's the money???

VINCE
MY FUCKING DAUGHTER. Where is she???

BOBBY
Where's the money.

VINCE
I don't have the money. Never cashed it in, you're gonna have to give
me back my kid. You're going to prison, what other choices do you
have????

IN THE CLOSET,

Corky has his finger on the trigger of the Uzi. He's ready to blow them
away, even from inside, he's still gonna be able to hurt them. And
finish them off once he steps out of the closet.

VINCE
I DON'T HAVE THE MONEY.

A long moment goes by.

BOBBY
You don't have it.

VINCE
No.

CUT TO:

INSIDE THE CLOSET,

Corky presses the trigger. He's gonna blow them away.

BACK TO VINCE AND BOBBY

BOBBY
You don't------

BLAM! BLAM! BLAM! Gunfire is heard from inside the closet.

Amy steps out of the closet, Glock 19 in hand. Bobby and Vince see the
corpse of Corky. Corky's head is blown to bits. Amy steps away from the
closet. Vince and Bobby are still standing in front of each other. This
time there's a brief expression of happiness in Vince's face.

Vince can hardly breath.

VINCE
Amy, give me that gun. You don't wanna hold it. It's dangerous.

Beat.

VINCE
Amy, are you hurt, are you okay?

THEN AMY SHOOTS VINCE IN THE CHEST, POINT BLANK! Vince staggers back
and leans against the cement wall behind him. A moment later, blood is
all over the wall.

AMY
I'm your FUCKING daughter. That's who I am.

VINCE
Amy, nooooooo!

Vince just stares in disbelief. His own kid shot him! He can't fucking
believe it! What did he do wrong? Amy turns around and shoots Bobby as
well, in the stomach.

BOBBY
AAAAAAAA--- FUCK! YOU SHOT ME, KID!

FADE OUT.

EXT. THE BROWNSTONE - NIGHT

Amy is walking away from the brownstone. This time, nothing on her
hands. No gun. Nothing.

BOBBY
(V.O.)
Let me explain, sir...

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. TASKER HOME, BATHROOM - DAY

Amy is taking a shower.

VINCE
(V.O.)
You think I'll make it?

BOBBY
(V.O.)
You took it in the lung right?

VINCE
(V.O.)
My left lung, I think.

BOBBY
(V.O.)
No, you won't. But maybe I will...

VINCE
(V.O.)
(COUGHS REAL HARD)
Fuck... fuck you... erm... how long has it been?

BOBBY
(V.O)
Eight hours.

VINCE
(V.O.)
Nice watch.

BOBBY
(V.O.)
Thanks.

INT. AMY'S BEDROOM - DAY

Amy takes some cash out of a glass jar. She's already dressed, and
lying on her bed is a backpack, obviously, one filled with clothes. The
cash is obviously the three thousand she has been talking about.

EXT. TASKER HOME - DAY

Amy, carrying the backpack starts walking away from her house. She's
off to somewhere. Probably far from here.

EXT. STREET - DAY

Marion is leaning on an ambulance. She looks really nervous and upset.
A MEDIC approaches her.

MEDIC
Didn't make it.

MARION
Who?

MEDIC
Both of them.

Beat.

MARION
(sotto)
Fuck.

FADE OUT.

THE END.
