There is a knock on the door. Patricia Yeah, come in. Patricias older sister ANN, 38, walks into the office. Ann Hi, you ready for lunch? PATRICIA (Still looking at the screen) Yeah, just a sec. Ann starts to walk to the front of the desk. She takes a peek at the computer screen. ANN So what is it that youre working on? On the screen is a completed game of solitaire. ANN (contd) Come on Patty solitaire? Patricia pushes the screen down. PATRICIA Never mind Im hungry. She gets up from her chair and walks over to the coat rack to retrieve her coat. There are a few family photographs sitting on the coffee table. To the left is a fireplace. A couple of easy chairs are placed in front of the fireplace. The left wall is encased in windows. To the right of the windows sits a wooden desk with a chair. To the left of the desk is a bookcase with a variety of books on American History. On top of the desk looking a bit out of place is a computer. BRENDAN DONNELLY, 35, enters the room. He walks over to the computer and turns it on. He downloads a web page on heart disease. He links to an article on Colin Reynolds, Patricias brother-in-law, and his new procedure. BRENDAN Doesnt do us much good if hes in New York. He lets out a sigh and shuts down the computer. He walks over to the bookcase and fingers a number of the books stopping on one entitled POST-WAR AMERICAN AND THE GROWTH OF SUBURBIA. He opens the book and slowly flips through its pages. Mary (VOICE OVER) Brendan, Brendan is that you? He closes the book, leaving it on the desk and exits the room. INT. a bedroom - DAY 0002000003D2000016833CC,It is a small room with just a bed, a night stand to the side and a small dresser to the right of the door. MARY DONNELLY, 65, lies in bed. Brendan enters the room. BRENDAN Aye, Mum. What is it? She sits herself up in the bed. Mary GERRY called about going to the pub. I told him yad be there at six. BRENDAN (Sitting on the bed) Whyd you tell him that? MARY Cause ya need to get out me boy. BRENDAN But I... MARY Dont be arguing. Now its half past five. You go and get ready to meet Gerry. PATRICIA (Taking a deep breath) Yeah, she did. Brendan takes hold of her hand, smiling. BRENDAN I think thats fantastic. Sort of like my da getting me into Post-War War II America. PATRICIA Really? PATRICIA How did you end up in Ireland? BRENDAN Oh, I was born there. My da and his parents moved back when my father was in his teens. (Laughing) He wasnt too happy about it until he met my mother. PATRICIA So...what? Your father regaled you with stories of America? BRENDAN Pretty much. He loved growing up here. I lost count of the number of stories he told me. He leans in towards Patricia. BRENDAN (contd) You know I took a drive the other day to the house he grew up in. I wanted to get up close and personal to the place he spent his childhood. PATRICIA Really? How did it go? BRENDAN Just my luck the owners werent home. PATRICIA So it was your father who inspired you to grow up and become an American Studies professor? BRENDAN Yeah, I suppose so. Like I told you I was supposed to work at Columbia when he passed away. Brendan leaves back on the couch. BRENDAN (contd) About six months after he died I got the position at Trinity. You know they asked me to do a class on Post War America. (BEAT) But My heart wasnt in it. I turned them down. Ended up doing a class on the American Civil War. (BEAT) Every semester theyd ask me again to do the class and Id turn them down. Then after a few years I decided I was ready to teach it. PATRICIA Yeah, I know what you mean. She runs her hands across the notebook. PATRICIA (contd) I havent written a single poem since my mom died. (BEAT) At least you got back to teaching that class. He walks over to the mantle, looking at picture of Patricia and her sister. PATRICIA So after your mom has the operation will you go back to teaching? BRENDAN Id like to. PATRICIA Are you going to go back to your dads old house? He takes a quick glance of a photo of Patricias dad. BRENDAN I dont know. Patricia walks over to him, handing him the notebook. PATRICIA Ill tell you what. If you take me to see your dads house, Ill let you look at my poems. He takes the notebook, smiling. BRENDAN Why would you want to see that house? PATRICIA I grew up in a Levitt house. It would be interesting to see how much difference if any there is between the two houses. BRENDAN All right then, you have a deal. PATRICIA Great. Lets go now. Patricia grabs her keys from off the coffee table. BRENDAN Now? Why now? PATRICIA Yeah. Its the weekend and its not too late. Perhaps theres a better chance theyre home. Come on. She grabs him by the hand and tugs on him to follow her. BRENDAN All right, all right. INT. brendans car- day Brendan pulls up to the house he had visited earlier. PATRICIA Oh, my goodness. BrENDAN What? PATRICIA My dads house is only a couple of blocks over. BRENDAN Youre kidding. PATRICIA No. In fact one of my best friends from school, ELIZABETH, lived on this block. She scans the street. PATRICIA (contd) Yeah, a few houses down. She turns her attention towards Brendan. PATRICIA (contd) How strange is that? Brendan then exits the car and the two head up the driveway, which has a late model sedan parked in it, and to the front door. Patricia rings the doorbell. After a few moments a WOMAN in her forties opens the door. WOMAN Yes? Patricia looks at the woman for a moment as if studying her. PATRICIA MELINDA? MELINDA HARRIS? WOMAN Its OHARA now. Do I know you? PATRICIA Its Patricia Murphy. (BEAT) Elizabeths friend. MELINDA Patty? Is that really you? The two hug. MeLINDA (contd) I havent seen you since you and Lizzy graduated high school! (BEAT) Is this your husband? Brendan shakes her hand. PATRICIA No... hes.... BRENDAN My names Brendan. And we havent quite taken that step yet. MeLINDA Nice to meet you. (BEAT) Come in. Come in. What in the world brings you here? The three enter the house. PATRICIA Brendans dad... He grew up in this house. INT. melindas kitchen - DaY The kitchen is of medium size with a small table which seats four in the center. MeLINDA Wow, youre kidding me. BrENDAN No. But that was a long time ago. MELINDA Have a seat. Can I get you anything? PATRICIA No. BRENDAN No, thank you. PATRICIA (Looking around the room) Every Levitt kitchen looks the same. MeLINDA Yeah, they do. BRENDAN Do you still have that apple tree in the backyard? MELINDA Sorry, we had to cut it done a year or so after we moved in. BRENDAN Do you mind if I just have a look around the house? MELINDA Not at all. Just dont mind the mess in JOHNS room. 0002000009FA0000CF549F4,Brendan walks out of the kitchen to a short hallway and Patricia follows behind. To the right is a small bathroom and next door is a small bedroom. Across the hall is the master bedroom. Turning, the two turn into the living room, which is just slightly larger then the kitchen. Melinda enters the living room. MeLINDA (contd) Sorry the place is such a mess. Brendan points the side of the staircase on the right side of the living room. BRENDAN Thats where they put the Christmas tree. MELINDA Thats where we put it too. He runs his hand along the wall. BRENDAN I have this picture of my father standing next to a TV that was right about here in the wall. PATRICIA I remember that TV when we first moved into our house. If I recall we only got sound. BRENDAN My da told me he used to watch THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW on that TV. Brendan walks over to the fireplace which is on the left of the room. BRENDAN (contd) I take it you dont burn peat in there. MeLINDA To be honest with you I cant remember the last time we used the fireplace. BRENDAN In the winter after a snowstorm my grandfather would always put up a fire. PATRICIA Is that what you father did back in Ireland as well? BRENDAN Are you kidding? When I was growing up there was barely enough snow to make a descent snowball. PATRICIA Melinda remember some of the snowball fights we had? MARY Oh, yeah. They were pretty intense. We always managed to get soaked through to the skin. Its no wonder no one every came down with pneumonia. PATRICIA I think that was due to the gallons of hot chocolate we drank. BRENDAN That sounds like fun. PATRICIA It was. MeLINDA Do you want to look upstairs? Brendan glances towards the stairs. BRENDAN No I dont think so. Besides I think weve taken up enough of your time. MELINDA Not a problem. BRENDAN I think well get going. MELINDA All right. Melinda walks them to the front door. MeLINDA (contd) Ill tell Lizzie you dropped by. PATRICIA Do you have a pen and paper? Ill leave her my address and phone number. MELINDA Sure. Melinda walks over to one of the drawers. She pushes around objects in the drawer. MeLINDA (contd) Stupid... BRENDAN AND PATRICIA Junk drawer. Brendan and Patricia look at each other and laugh. Melinda pulls out a pad and pen. MELINDA Here they are. Patricia takes the pen and pad and leaning on the kitchen table writes down her address and phone number. She turns to face Melinda and gives her a hug. PATRICIA It was great to see you again. EXT. outside Melindas House - Day The two approach Brendans car and he turns around to look at the house. BRENDAN This may sound crazy, but it was like I could almost see my da in there. PATRICIA Its not crazy. I felt chilled just thinking about those snowball fights. BRENDAN Its weird how your friends sister now owns the house. PATRICIA Yeah. BRENDAN You know if Gerry were here he would say that was destinys way of saying we belong together. He smiles at Patricia and she nervously smiles back. PATRICIA (Laughing) And if Ann were here shed probably agree with him. Brendan laughs at the comment. BRENDAN How about I treat you to a cup of tea to take away the chill? PATRICIA That would be nice. He opens the door for her and she gets in the car. As he makes his way around the car to the drivers side he takes one last look at the house and then gets into the car. INT. pATRICIAS OFFICE - afTERNOON Patricia is at her desk writing in a notebook. There is a knock on the door and it opens before Patricia can respond. ANN Coming in. Patricia quickly closes the book and puts it in the drawer. PATRICIA Do you mind? ANN What? I knocked. PATRICIA Yeah, but most people wait until they are told they can come in. ANN Oh, please. PATRICIA (Quickly) No! ANN Whatcha doing? Patricia closes the drawer. PATRICIA Nothing...work. Ann walks over to the desk. ANN Liar. What did you put in the drawer? Ann grabs hold of the handle and Patricia attempts to stop her from opening the drawer. PATRICIA Do you mind? Ann wins the struggle and gets the drawer open, where she sees the notebook. She quickly grabs it. Patricia tries in vain to take it away from her. But Ann holding onto the notebook firmly walks away from the desk. ANN This is your book of poetry! PATRICIA Yeah, so what? Ann flips through the pages. ANN Youre writing again. PATRICIA What if I am? Ann closes the notebook. ANN I think its great. (BEAT) But why now? PATRICIA I just felt like writing again. ANN You were... inspired? PATRICIA Yeah. ANN By what? Or should I say who? Patricia doesnt respond. ANN (contd) Could it be Brendan? PATRICIA I didnt say that. ANN You dont have to, youre practically blushing. Patricia walks over to Ann and takes back the notebook. PATRICIA I am not. ANN Yes you are. (BEAT) Thats so adorable. Youre in love. PATRICIA Ann. ANN No, no its great. Really. Patricia walks back over to the desk, places the notebook in the drawer and sits down. PATRICIA Why are you here? ANN Lunch. Remember? PATRICIA Oh, yeah. ANN Of course if you would rather go out to lunch with Brendan... Patricia grabs her purse. PATRICIA Cut it out. Lets just go. EXT. anns backyard - DAY Casually dressed Patricia and Brendan enter the backyard. Patricia is carrying a container of potato salad. Brendan looks over the yard. There is a childrens swing set and next to that a bench swing. There is also a picnic table where Patrick and Ann are sitting. Colin is at the barbecue grilling the food. Brendan takes the container from Patricia. BRENDAN Let me take that. PATRICIA Okay. Patricia extends her hand towards Brendan. PATRICIA (contd) It makes it look more convincing. He takes her hand and they walk further into the backyard. Ann leaves the table and approaches them. ANN Hi, Patty. This must be Brendan. (Shaking his hand) Hi, Brendan Im Ann Pattys sister. Oh let me take that potato salad from you. (Motioning to Colin) Thats Colin my husband. She takes the potato salad over to the picnic table. Colin Hi. BRENDAN Hi. PATRICIA Where are the kids? COLIN Over at my folks house. PATRICIA Oh, really? I was looking forward to seeing them. ANN I thought wed make this an adults only gathering. Brendan looks over at Patricia who is trying to contain a smile. BRENDAN Yeah, I suppose so. ANN Im going to get the rest of the condiments. PATRICIA Need any help? ANN No, thanks. Ive got it. Patricia sits down next to her father, kissing him on the cheek. Brendan joins Colin at the barbecue. PATRICK So Patty are you happy? pATRICIA Yes Dad. PATRICK Hes been treating you good? Patricia looks over at Brendan who winks at her, then goes back to his conversation with Colin. PATRICIA Yes. PATRICK Because if he isnt... PATRICIA Hes treating me just fine Dad. Patricia straightens out the plastic knives and forks. PATRICK You think maybe hes the one? PATRICIA Dad I havent known him that long. PATRICK Just asking. Ann comes back out of the house. ANN Is that food ready yet, Colin? COLIN Coming right up. (To Brendan) Grab that plate of hot dogs would you Brendan? BRENDAN Sure. They walk over to the table. Patrick, Patricia and Brendan on one side, Ann and Colin on the other, with Colin sitting right across from Brendan. COLIN The fine art of making the perfect hot dog Brendan. Watch and learn. He puts a hot dog on a bun. He pours mustard on it, followed by sauerkraut and then relish. COLIN (contd) (Leaning in towards Brendan) Never, I repeat never put catsup on a hot dog. Patricia hands him a napkin, then starts to put together a hamburger. EXT. aNNS BACKYARD - later that night Brendan is sitting on the bench swing. Patricia exits the house. She walks up to Brendan. PATRICIA Mind if I join you? BrENDAN Not at all. PATRICIA You and Colin seem to be getting along pretty well. BRENDAN I like him. I like your whole family. PATRICIA You want them? Brendan laughs. BRENDAN It seems your dad really loved your mom. PATRICIA Yeah, he did. He took her death really hard. BRENDAN Im sorry I couldnt have done anything to have helped your mother. PATRICIA What are you talking about? You didnt even know my mother. BRENDAN Im sorry. It sounded stupid the minute it came out of my mouth. PATRICIA No, it didnt. It was really rather sweet. Brendan glances over to the house, noticing Patricias father looking at them. BRENDAN Looks like we have an audience. Patricia looks towards the house. BRENDAN (contd) Should we make it look convincing? PATRICIA What do you mea... He gives her a long soft kiss. He then caresses the cheek with the back of his hand. She looks at him a bit shocked. BRENDAN Did it work? She glances back over at the house. Her father starts walking away from the window. PATRICIA Yeah, it seems so. BRENDAN (Smiling) Good. INT. the bathroom in Brendans hotel room - mORNING Brendan, shirtless and wearing jeans stand in front of the mirror combing back his wet hair. There is a knock on the door. INT. brendans hotel room - mORNING He opens the door to find Patricia standing there. BRENDAN Hi. Arent you supposed to be at work? She looks at him a moment before answering. But dont worry Ill be back in plenty of time for your fathers birthday. PATRICIA Thats what I wanted to talk to you about. (BEAT) There wont be a need for you to come after the operation. Brendan looks confused. BRENDAN What? PATRICIA You can stay in Ireland. BRENDAN But I thought... PATRICIA I decided to tell my father whats been going on. So there wont be any need for you to come back. BRENDAN It really isnt a problem. Ill be back as... PATRICIA No. I think it would be best if you just stayed in Ireland. He looks confusingly at her. She kisses him on the cheek. PATRICIA (contd) Thanks. She exits the room leaving Brendan confused. INT. pATRICIAS LIVING ROOM - niGHT Patricia sits on the sofa, papers spread out on the coffee table. The doorbell rings twice in rapid succession, then a determined knocking. Patricia quickly gets up from the sofa PATRICIA Hold your horses. ANN (VOICE OVER) Patricia! Patricia open the door! Now! Patricia opens the door and Ann storms into the room. ANN (contd) What have you done? PATRICIA Would you calm down. ANN (contd) He said you told him to stay in Ireland! PATRICIA (Calmly) Thats right. ANN Are you out of your mind?! Ann sits down next to Patricia. PATRICIA Ive had it lying to Dad. Ann looks intently at Patricia. ANN Thats not it...not be a long shot. PATRICIA Its done with, okay? ANN I dont get you. You told me you were in love with him. PATRICIA I never said that. ANN Okay maybe not in so many words, but you are. So why would you sabotage this? PATRICIA Dont you have to get back to the kids? ANN Never mind the kids, just answer me. Patricia leans back on the sofa obviously frustrated. She then gets up and walks over to Ann. PATRICIA Ann, he lives in Ireland. ANN So? PATRICIA I live in New York. This would never work. (BEAT) Besides just because I have feelings for him, doesnt mean he has feelings for me. Ann glares at her sister. ANN Youre a coward. PATRICIA What? ANN A coward you know someone who is... PATRICIA I know what a coward is. ANN Youre never going to find someone if youre not willing to take a chance. PATRICIA Why dont you just stay out of my business? ANN Excuse me. PATRICIA Ever since we were kids its, Patricia do this, Patricia do that. Enough already. ANN Without me you would have had a pretty boring childhood. PATRICIA It would have been safer thats for sure. ANN So now youre making up for that now. PATRICIA What? ANN Youre always taking the safe way out Patricia. If it werent for me you wouldnt have any adventure in your life. (BEAT) Stop being so cautious! Take some chances! Patricia avoids looking at her sister. Ann lets out a frustrated sigh and heads for the door. ANN (contd) I dont know why I even bother. She storms out of the house slamming the door. Patricia stares as the door a moment before plopping back onto the sofa. 000200000662000105B065C,INT. a hospital waiting room - eARLY EVENING The waiting room consists of several chairs and a coffee table, which hold a variety of outdated magazines. A clock is positioned on one of the walls. Brendan sits alone in the waiting room. He picks up one of the magazines and flips through its pages, then tosses it back on the pile. He glances up at the clock reads which six fifteen. He lets out a sigh. BRENDAN Whats taking so long? He glances down the empty hallway then picks up another magazine trying to concentrate on its contents. A few moments later Gerry comes bounding into the waiting room, out of breath. GERRY Hey, Brendan. Any news yet? (Still breathless) Im sorry Im late. But my last fare was going to Shannon. BRENDAN Thats okay. No, no word yet. (BEAT) It should have been over an hour ago. Brendan looks up at the clock again as does Gerry. Gerry slaps him on the back. GERRY I wouldnt be worrying about it Brendan. Remember this is a new procedure. Besides Im sure if there was anything wrong they would have told you. BRENDAN Yeah, I guess so. Gerry takes a long deep breath. GERRY So tell me, are you excited about getting back to New York, once your Mum is settled in? BRENDAN Hey thanks for looking in on her. GERRY Not a problem. But how about it? Are you excited about New York? BRENDAN Im not going back. GERRY What? BRENDAN I wont be going back to New York. Gerry gets up from his seat. GERRY Why not? Brendan leans back in his chair. BRENDAN Patricia told me not to come back. GERRY Why Brendan you sound disappointed. GERRY Listen you havent been this interested in a woman since... BRENDAN Dont say her name. GERRY Well its true, just the same isnt it? Brendan avoids looking in Gerrys eyes. BRENDAN Yeah. Gerry puts his hand on Brendans shoulder. GERRY Its time you find some happiness my friend. You deserve it. Brendan looks him in the eye. BRENDAN Happiness...right. Colin enters the waiting room. Brendan brushes past Gerry to greet him. BRENDAN (contd) Colin. Howd it go? Hows my mother? COLIN (Smiling) All indications point to a complete success. He hugs Colin. He then quickly pulls away. BRENDAN Im sorry. COLIN No, thats all right. Im glad it went as well as it did. BRENDAN When I can I see her? COLIN Id wait until tomorrow. Shes in recovery and shes still asleep. BRENDAN All right then. A NURSE approaches Colin. Nurse Doctor Reynolds could I see you a moment? COLIN Certainly. Colin looks down at the papers. COLIN Ah, no. (BEAT) Ann faxed me a note along with a letter for you. Brendan takes the letter from Colin. BRENDAN Me? COLIN Yeah. GERRY What would Ann be faxing you? BRENDAN I havent a clue. He sits down in one of the chairs and starts reading the letter. GERRY Well? BRENDAN It says she talked to someone at the Long Island Studies at Hofstra University. Theyre interested in interviewing me for a position over there. Gerry sits down next to Brendan patting him on the back. GERRY Thats fantastic Brendan! Brendan looks perplexedly at the paper in his hand. GERRY (contd) You are going back for the interview arent you? Brendan looks over at Colin. BRENDAN Colin would you know why Ann would do this? COLIN Well if I know my wife. Shes probably trying to get you together with Patricia. Gerry laughs. GERRY Even more reason to go back. Brendan glares at his friend. GERRY (contd) Dont be giving me that look. You have no more excuses. BRENDAN And what about my mot.... GERRY Your mother will be fine. Isnt that right Doc? GERRY So youll be going back to the States. Brendan looks at the fax again. BRENDAN This is a pretty good opportunity. Gerry takes the fax from him. GERRY Yeah, whatever. But the better opportunity is with Patricia. BRENDAN And if it doesnt work out? GERRY Theres still the job with Hofstra. Its a big island you wont have to see her again. Stop being so afraid. BRENDAN I am not afraid. He pats him on the back. GERRY Okay, keep telling yourself that. He squeezes Brendans shoulder. GERRY (contd) Just remember she isnt Molly. NEW YORK INT. pATRICIAS BEDROOM - DAY It is a fairly large room. To the right of the door sits a stained wooden desk with a neatly stack of papers on it. Patricia sits at the desk and picks up the photo of her and her father at the Cliffs of Mohr. There is a knock on the door. PATRICIA Yeah, come in. Her father enters the room. She walks over to the window and looks out. PATRICIA Yes, Dad I know. PATRICK (Sighing) Why would you want to do something like hiring a boyfriend? She turns to face her father. PATRICIA I know how much you would like it if I were to get married... PATRICK Wait you were going to marry this man? PATRICIA No. We were supposed to break up after your birthday. PATRICK But I havent seen him around for a couple of weeks. PATRICIA Part of the deal was Colin was going to perform heart surgery pro bono on his mother. He went back to be with her. PATRICK You got Colin involved with this? Patricia looks down at the floor. Patrick lets out a sigh. PATRIck (contd) So what Brendans going to return back here and break up with you? PATRICIA No. I told him not to come back. PATRICK You sound disappointed. (BEAT) You havent started to have feeling for him, have you? Patricia doesnt respond. Patrick puts his arms around her. PATRICK (contd) Why would you tell him not to come back? She pulls away from the hug. PATRICIA I figured I should put a stop to it before...before I got hurt. He brushes back a strain of hair from her eyes. PATRICK Patricia,sweetheart, you have to be willing to take risks when it comes to your heart or youll never find happiness. She walks back over to the desk and opens up one of the drawers, taking out a copy of the contract. She looks it over and then tears it in half, sighing as she deposits it in the trash bin. INT. patricias living room - dAY There are a few GUESTS in the living when the door bell rings. Ann comes out from the kitchen to answer it. Brendan heads up the stairs. COLIN (To Ann) This may be one time your sister wont be upset with you interfering in her life. INT. pATRICIAS bedroom - DAY Patricia is still sitting at the desk when there is a knock on the door. PATRICIA Yeah, Dad come in. Brendan enters the room. BrENDAN Its not your dad. PATRICIA Brendan. What are you doing here? He looks at her without saying a word at first. BRENDAN Huh? PATRICIA What are you doing back in the States? Your mother hasnt had a set back has she? BRENDAN Oh, no. Shes doing well. PATRICIA Im glad to hear that. So why are you back? BRENDAN Job interview. PATRICIA Oh. For who? BRENDAN Hofstra. Their Long Island Studies. PATRICIA I didnt know they were looking. BRENDAN Neither did I. (BEAT) Apparently Ann did, however. PATRICIA Ann? Brendan reaches in his pocket and takes out the fax handing it to Patricia. She reads it, then hands it back. PATRICIA (contd) If youre looking for Ann to thank her, I think shes downstairs somewhere. BRENDAN I didnt come to see Ann. PATRICIA Then why did you come? BRENDAN I needed to... PATRICIA Yes? He walks over to her and kisses her. She looks stunned. BRENDAN Well...you didnt slap me. Thats a good sign. She doesnt say anything. BRENDAN (contd) Then again you arent saying anything. She in turn then kisses him. BRENDAN (contd) (Laughing) I almost didnt come here. PATRICIA Why not? BRENDAN Well after you told me not to come back, I pretty much figured you werent interested. He brushes back her hair smiling. BRENDAN (contd) Im glad I took the chance. PATRICIA I think Im ready to take a few chances myself. TWO YEARS LATER INT. a borders bookstore - aFTERNOON Several chairs are set up, with about half of them occupied. Brendan sits in the first row with a BABY of about six months old on his lap. A podium is set up and a MAN in his mid-forties step away from it. He returns to a row of four seats, one which is occupied by Patricia. A WOMAN in her thirties approaches the podium as the audience applauds. Woman Thank you MR. MASTERSON. (Checking her notes) And now for our first place winner of our poetry contest Mrs. Patricia Donnelly who will read the winning poem A PLACE ACROSS THE SEA. Patricia approaches the podium with the poem in her hand. She looks over at Brendan who smiles. BRENDAN (To the baby) See. Theres Mommy. He takes the babys hand and waves at Patricia. She smiles and then clears her throat before starting to recite the poem. PATRICIA A PLACE ACROSS THE SEA. Think of a land in which hills do roll. Of misty rain falls that sweep over knolls. A country where they welcome you with a smile and some tea. Whether in Cork, Dublin Wicklow or County Kerry. Cottages and castles line the countryside. As if keeping watch over the Irish sea tide. An isle in which tales of leprechauns are told. And stories of rainbows and pots of gold. Of old men in pubs with a Guinness in hand. A place across the sea which they call Ireland.
