KIOT Out they rode into the wild forests seeking adventure, and bringing civil impulses to the wild population. Jacques Just like the Templars. KIOT Exactly! This is obviously Kiots pet subject. KIOT But the Templars strength comes not from the cosmic Christ, but from the inner Christ. The Grail itself. Templar Knights are Grail Knights. He moves closer to Jacques who is listening, spellbound. KIOT At the heart of the Templars is initiation, initiation into the great universal mysteries. (beat) An initiate can perceive the living spirit that dances invisibly, behind all that we see. Jacques moves to where Kiots old Templar sword hangs on a wall mount. Jacques reverently takes it down. KIOT Careful boy! It still holds an edge. Yes... it was a faithful friend on the first crusade. Jacques I long to be a knight down to my very bones! The Saracens attack unceasingly. The heavily armored Templars are hard pressed and exhausted. Things are such that all the Templars hold of the castle is one corner. The Saracens, on a signal from their commander, pull back about fifty feet, creating a perimeter round the thirty or so Templars. De BEUJEU Shields! Hundreds of Saracen desert archers, with their small but powerful curved bows, unleash an arrow storm. The Templar shields are peppered. The horses are the main casualty; these animals are well trained, and continue on their feet with many arrows in their flanks. De BEUJEU Templars! IN CRISTO Morimur! The Saracen infantry fall upon them again. The sand is caked with blood and gore, mostly Saracen. A loud drum beat ECHOES above the sound of clashing steel, and the SCREAMS of dying men and horses The Saracens draw back once more. De BEUJEU Archers! The Knights steel themselves for another barrage. None comes. The massed Templar war cry echoes over the castle walls. The Saracen army pulls back, attempting to re-group. De Beujeu seizes the moment. De BEUJEU NON NOBIS DOMINE! The Templars fall on the retreating Saracens in an orgy of killing and destruction. The Templar war cry, TUA DA GLORIAM, rings mightily from outside the castle walls. The trapped Knights are ecstatic with the scent of victory and liberation. EXT. Jacques I must warn you, I know nothing of politics. De BEUJEU You will learn! That is my will. They embrace and walk into the interior. They enter a Grand hall where HUNDREDS of Knights sit at supper. The noise is deafening. Jacques takes his seat with De Beujeu. A group of older Knights view Jacques with suspicion. De Beujeu rises and signals at two TRUMPETERS who blast out a few antiphonal notes then: Silence. Grand Master De Beujeu considers, gets slowly to his feet. De BEUJEU Gentlemen tomorrow I leave for Cyprus, then Acre. (beat) You are all aware of the wild rumors heard on every corner. Throughout the land we are accused of unspeakable practises. Where do these tales originate? De Beujeu narrows his eyes. DE BEUJEU Be under no illusion, they issue from the dark one. Lord of this world, and his earthly servants. We have enemies everywhere even amongst the principalities. That is why I have appointed Jacques de Molay, initiate of the seventh degree, Preceptor of the Temple. clairvoyant POV: Jacques sees multi-colored, shimmering clouds enveloping the men. He stares slightly above the wide sea of faces, clairvoyantly soaking in their mood. DE BEUJEU We enjoy the confidence of merchants and citizens all over Christendom. It is possible. Jacques approaches the door and unlocks a series of bolts. He pushes the heavy oak leaves. The sight that greets Phillip almost knocks him off his feet. A vaulted hall, a cathedral like space, filled from top to bottom with a dazzling array of gold and treasure. Walkways, twice as high as a man, are stacked with gold and silver bullion. Phillip, his mouth agape, drops to his knees. Jacques helps him up. Phillip (shakes his head in disbelief) How? Its...its not possible. He views row after row of gold and silver artifacts. Phillip picks up an Indian god with an erect phallus. (the same one the knights were laughing about earlier). Phillip Beautiful. Jacques A God. I spared my men. De BEUJEU True, we lost men yesterday, but they fought with courage. Taking many infidels with them. The Hospitaller nods with respect. HOSPITTALR Templar, your courage is without question, but from what I hear the same cannot be said for your morals. Ext. Acre - DAY. The blazing sun flashes on a Templar sword as it slices into the shoulder of a screaming Saracen. The severed arm falls to the hot sand, boiling the blood. In the background, buildings burn amid fierce fighting. Part of the outer wall has fallen, and 100 Templars are surrounded by the Saracen hoards. The Saracen infantry are no match for the heavily armored Templar Knights but... The continuous arrow storm lends the Saracens an advantage. Jacques flails away with an evil looking MACE, his shield a porcupine of arrow shafts. A Templar horse is finally brought to its knees by the sheer number of hits. The brave animal buckles and its Knight falls forward from the saddle. Jacques and De Beujeu ride over to aid their fellow. The fallen Knight hacks desperately to keep the Saracens at bay. The fallen Knights squire boldly sallies forth with his spare horse. Lightly armored he moves swiftly. Jacques and De Beujeu drag the wounded Knight to his feet. De Beujeu Non Nobis Domine! With this rallying war cry the Knight is raised onto his fresh horse. The young squire receives a nod from the Grand Master. De Beujeu raises his sword with . . . De Beujeu Tua Da Gloriam! 000200000AE60001590EAE0,An ARROW buries itself in his armpit. The arrow penetrates down into his chest cavity. He collapses onto Jacques. Blood issues from his mouth as he clasps Jacques in a death grip. The Squire rides to his aid, but is pierced by an arrow through the cheek which lodges in his throat. The Squire falls from his horse coughing, choking blood. The Knights rally round their Grand Master and shield him back into the safety of the inner stronghold. Int. the Templar stronghold - night De Beujeu lies on a table bleeding profusely. Jacques at his side along with Peter De Severy. Peter De SEVARY He was truly awesome today! Weve repelled them once more! Jacques For now, but I fear we cannot hold them for much longer. In the background FIVE KNIGHTS remove their armour, exhausted. De Beujeu attempts to rise from the table. De BEUJEU (broken) Jacques...I am done here. I pass the seal to you as the highest initiate...you... Jacques pulls away, shocked. Jacques I can lead no more men to their deaths...While your breath remains- De BEUJEU I am already dead. A thousand kettle drums beat a doom laden rhythm. De Beujeu grasps Jacques' hand and presses it to the Grand Masters seal hanging around his neck. De BEUJEU Take it. Jacques (horrified) Peter! De Beujeu passes out breaking the chain round his neck. His last act. The seal remains in Jacques' hands. Jacques quickly hands the Seal to Peter De Sevary. Jacques Peter it falls to you. Take it please, I beg you! Peter De SEVARY He gave it to you. We all witnessed it. It is your destiny. All the Knights rise to their feet. Jacques throws the seal to the floor, like a hot coal. Jacques It cannot be me. The whole order is in turmoil. Ive foreseen the end. After two hundred years... If we lose Acre- Peter DE SEVARY If we lose Acre we will all be dead. Geoffry enters and pulls off his helmet. He immediately senses the atmosphere. Geoffry Hes dead? Peter picks up the seal and reverently hands it back to Jacques. Jacques looks to Geoffry shaking his head. Geoffry's mouth and jaw set firm. He sighs as if relieved. Geoffry Yes! Jacques What do you mean, yes! I cannot read or write. I am not fit to lead. Peter DE SEVARY With the Popes support anything is possible. Jacques smiles wearily. Jacques. The Popes support? Who supports the Pope? God?! You think its God! Peter De SEVARY Artur saw greatness in you Jacques. So do I. It is Gods will. Geoffry Your destiny! Peter kneels. All the Knights follow. Peter De SEVARY (cont'd) Pray with us Jacques. Bend your knee accept your destiny with grace. Jacques To carry fire into the flame. Thats my destiny. I will resign to it, but I do not accept it. INT. See it through Jacques, see it through to the end, as I will. Jacques Youre a good man Peter...I'll see it through for your sake. Peter DE SEVARY Then start in Paris! And take Geoffry hed be lost without anyway. A Knight rushes in. Knight 1 They coming! Geoffry At night? Knight From every side. Peter De SEVARY On this night a century turns. Jacques unconsciously assumes leadership. Jacques While the port is ours we may still get relief. If the outer wall is breached, fall back to the stronghold. They exit to death and glory. EXT. acre - moments later. Thousands of Saracens climb the walls like ants. A major breach allows hundreds to pour into the inner courtyard. On one side the Hospitallers, badly out-numbered, put up a desperate defence. The Templars (the largest force) carve a route, from the inner courtyard, over to the Hospitallers. All in all about 300 Knights engage in close combat. The ground is strewn with mostly Saracen dead and dying. Jacques To the wall! Jacques and his fellow Knights (on horse back) hack their way through a forest of flailing limbs. An explosion rocks the wall closest to Jacques. A ton of masonry SPLINTERS viciously in all directions. A wedge of rock smashes into Jacques' helmet knocking him off his horse. SLOW. Terrifying, distorted HORSE WHINING. The fabric of reality appears to stretch. Geoffry, holding the BEAUSANT (the Templar flag), tries to aid Jacques. He approaches looking like a cut out figure in Jacques' elongated POV. An arrow shot at close range hits Geoffry in the throat. Blood shoots into the sky like backward rain. Geoffry sags into his horse then drops to the sand. The Beausant tumbles through the air. Peter De Severy and four Knights, their shields held high, drag Jacques back to the inner stronghold. All Knights now retreat. Thousands of Saracen voices scream for blood. A group of SARACEN INFANTRY run up to the prone Geoffry their blades glint in the fierce sun. Geoffry falls head first into the sand. The Saracens pick up the BEAUSANT and with a roar disappear into the throng. Jacques' dimmed eyes follow the Templar flag as it floats above the battle and out of the castle. Jacques Christ! Michael come to my aid! Jacques begins to twitch involuntarily, he stares wildly around the stone cell. The wind increases in pitch til it howls like a hurricane. Jacques' pleas are drowned by the voice of the Demon Asozael. ASOZAEL (O.S.) I am waiting. Jacques (praying) Michael! Aid your servant in his hour of need!
