FADE IN:
EXT.Field - Dawn
We see an empty, stubble field. There is no viewable horizon
as the fog is so thick that we can only see what is in front of us.
Suddenly, appearing from the mist is a GIRL. She is
running as fast as she can. The girl is beautiful, however, her beauty is
covered by the blood and dirt all over her face and clothes.
As she moves through the field, she pants and cries in fear.
In the distance appears THE SHAPE, a tall, strongly built man
wielding a gun in his hand. He moves through the fog, following the Girl at a
power walk.
The Shape fires the gun in the air. The Girl screams and runs
faster.
As The Shape walks through the thick mist, the Girl moves
quicker and finally disappears. He begins aimlessly firing into the fog.
We see the Girl. She stops and turns around, hearing
gunshots, however, The Shape is nowhere to be seen. The gunshots continue.
We see The Shape. He fires off his last few rounds and throws
the gun to the ground, taking out a switch-blade knife. He starts to run.
The Girl waits in the middle of the fog as it closes in on
her. She cannot see anything.
Catching her breath, she lets out a whimper.
The Shape turns around and begins moving in a different
direction, switch-blade ready.
The Girl looks into the fog to see The Shape beginning to emerge. Her eyes widen and she begins running even faster than before.
As the Girl moves through the fog, she continues to look
around. The Shape is just visible. Whether or not it can see her, we cannot
tell.
She trips over and looks around. The Shape stands there,
barely visible. It does not move. She lies there still and sheds a tear.
The Shape suddenly begins running towards her much faster. It
is obvious she is visible. She screams and leaps up, running at a sprint.
The Shape zooms towards her at an alarming rate. It finally
reaches her and grabs her by the back of her shirt.
Just as the Girl goes to scream, The Shape pulls her close
and gets her in a headlock. It takes the switch-blade and slits her throat.
The Girl falls to her knees, choking up blood.
The Shape tilts his head at her dead body then grabs her legs
and begins dragging her away as the Girl slowly lets out her last breath.
Cut to:
EXT.Train Tracks - Day
We see a train in the distance. It gets closer and closer and
finally zooms over us as we watch from under it.
Cut to:
INT.Train - Day
Sitting opposite each other at a table on the train is
STEPHEN CARPENTER (15) and NATALIE LOOMIS (15).
Stephen is wearing a black suit and tie and Natalie, a black
dress. The two of them both sit there staring out the window in silence.
Natalie looks very depressed.
The Scottish countryside zooms by the two of them as Stephen lifts his head from the glass to speak.
Stephen
Did you tell your parents you were going to the funeral?
Natalie
(Without looking back)
No.
Stephen looks at Natalie as she remains staring out the
window.
STEPHEN
How well did you know her?
Natalie is silent. Stephen returns to leaning his head
against the glass.
Cut to:
EXT.Train Station - Night
The train pulls into the station. Stephen and Natalie walk
off with the crowd, holding hands. They walk down a path leaving the station.
Cut to:
EXT.Street - Night
Still holding hands, the duo move into the streets. The area
around them
is empty and eerie.
Stephen and Natalie walk down the street together side by
side, the orange street lamps lighting the way.
STEPHEN
What time is the funeral tomorrow?
NATALIE
Nine o'clock, I think.
STEPHEN
And until then we'll be staying where?
NATALIE
Her mum said that we could stay the night and she'd drive
us to the funeral tomorrow.
STEPHEN
All right. Lead they way.
Stephen and Natalie walk.
Standing in plane sight, watching them is The Shape. They do
not see its masked face as it stands there.
Cut to:
EXT.House - Night
Natalie opens up a black gate and enters. She and Stephen
walk up the path. She stops and peers into a window. Black.
They go around and knock on the front door. There is no
answer.
STEPHEN
Try the door bell.
Natalie presses the doorbell. Still no answer. Stephen peers
into the kitchen window to see more blackness.
STEPHEN
(Angry)
Are you fucking kidding me?
NATALIE
Calm down.
STEPHEN
It's...
(Checking his watch)
...ten o'clock. What are we supposed to do? Just wait out here in the cold until morning?
As Stephen rants, Natalie continues trying the doorbell and
has no luck. She sighs impatiently and the two of them walk away.
Cut to:
EXT.STREET - NIGHT
Stephen and Natalie walk along the street. Leaning against a
wall is a bearded HOMELESS MAN. He is dirty and disgusting. They pass him.
Homeless Man
Hey! You two? Have you got anything you can give me?
STEPHEN
Sorry, we don't have anything.
HOMELESS MAN
Come on! You must have some money! Please, I'm starving.
Natalie begins rummaging in her purse and hands the man a
five pound note.
NATALIE
Here, it's not much but-
The Homeless Man snatches the money from her and puts it in
his pocket.
HOMELESS MAN
(Smiling)
Thank you. You're so kind. Thank you.
He grabs Natalie's hand and shakes it.
STEPHEN
We need to go now.
HOMELESS MAN
That's a hell of a girl you've got there, son.
STEPHEN
Tell me about it, now we really have to get going.
HOMELESS MAN
Thank you so much.
Natalie smiles at the Homeless Man and the two of them walk
away down the street together.
The Homeless Man sits back down, smiling. Behind him stands
The Shape holding a gun.
The Homeless Man turns around to see The Shape standing
there. He looks up in shock of the gun.
Cut to:
EXT.STREET - NIGHT
Stephen and Natalie walk down the street together side by
side.
STEPHEN
So what's the plan?
NATALIE
Don't worry. We'll find somewhere.
STEPHEN
Do you have any other friends around here.
NATALIE
As far as I'm aware they all moved away.
STEPHEN
(Sarcastic)
Well, a little fresh air never hurt anybody.
NATALIE
(Laughing)
Shut up.
The couple continue walking, cars passing on the road beside
them.
Cut to:
EXT.Alley Way - Night
We see the Homeless Man running as fast as he can, terrified.
Following him is The Shape, still wielding his pistol.
HOMELESS MAN
(Screaming, terrified)
What the fuck do you want from me! You fucking psycho!
The Shape raises the gun and shoots the Homeless Man in the
leg. The Homeless Man falls to the ground in agony.
Cut to:
EXT.Park - Night
Stephen and Natalie walk through the large, empty grassy area
of the park. Alone.
Cut to:
EXT.ALLEY WAY - NIGHT
The Shape drops the gun and takes out his switch-blade. He
moves closer to the crying Homeless Man.
Suddenly, we see The Shape violently stabs the Homeless Man
in the chest.
The life drains from the Homeless Man's body as the Shape's
head tilts to the side, looking at the dead man.
We see in the Homeless Man's hand he tightly holds the blood
soaked five pound note that Natalie gave him.
The Shape looks at the note and pulls the knife from the man's chest, then turns around and begins moving at a power walk.
Cut to:
EXT.STREET - NIGHT
Stephen and Natalie both lean against a wall, staring into
space.
STEPHEN
Maybe you could call your mum and ask her to pick us up?
NATALIE
Forget it, you know what she's like. Besides, I told her I
was staying at Jade's house, she'll kill us all. What about you're dad?
STEPHEN
I think we both know the answer to that.
NATALIE
He'd be okay.
STEPHEN
He'd come and pick us up, but I'd never hear the end of it.
Plus, I'm already grounded, I'll just end up having to sneak out of the house
more than I am already.
NATALIE
Do they think you're in bed as we speak?
STEPHEN
Yes.
The two of them go silent. Stephen looks back to Natalie.
STEPHEN
When does the next train come in?
Cut to:
EXT.TRAIN STATION - NIGHT
Natalie stands still, freezing cold, watching the train
tracks. Meanwhile, Stephen stands looking at train times.
STEPHEN
(O.S.)
Yes!
Stephen walks over to the shivering Natalie.
STEPHEN
(Smiling)
There's a train coming in at four am. What time is it now?
NATALIE
(Shivering)
One.
STEPHEN
Three hours. Okay.
Natalie looks at Stephen. Stephen smiles at her and takes off
his blazer, putting it around her.
NATALIE
(Smiling)
Thank you.
Natalie kisses him on the cheek.
NATALIE
What now then?
Stephen pauses.
STEPHEN
We wait.
Cut to:
EXT.TRAIN STATION - NIGHT
Stephen sits on the bench, Natalie is lying down with her
head on his
knee. The two of them are silent.
STEPHEN
Can I ask you a question?
NATALIE
Sure, what?
STEPHEN
Why do you think she was murdered?
Natalie pauses.
NATALIE
I don't know.
STEPHEN
Tell me about her.
NATALIE
She was...normal. I don't know what she could have done.
STEPHEN
You think she was in some sort of trouble?
NATALIE
I doubt it. She was a bit of a square if I'm honest.
But...she was my best friend.
STEPHEN
Who do you think did it?
NATALIE
Whoever it was must be pretty soulless to kill a girl like
her.
Stephen and Natalie go silent for a while.
NATALIE
When we were little, I remember we were playing in the park
after school together. We were both on the swings. I looked over and saw a guy
standing...watching us. He had a mask on. It really haunted me. I don't know if
she saw it too, but I could tell that this man...this...shape was watching us.
He stood in the shadows but I could see in his hand he was holding a knife. I
got really scared then. The two of us went home the opposite way. Just as we
were leaving I turned around and I saw that he was gone. Looking back, that
man...I think he was Death.
Natalie sheds a tear and dries her eyes. Stephen looks down
at her and sighs.
Cut to:
EXT.Bridge - Night
We look down on Stephen and Natalie from the bridge. Watching
them is The Shape.
The Shape begins walking from the bridge. As he walks away we
stay watching Stephen and Natalie as they sit with each other.
Cut to:
EXT.TRAIN STATION - NIGHT
Stephen and Natalie lie on the bench, asleep. Natalie is
asleep in Stephen's arms.
Stephen's eyes open slowly. He checks his watch to see that
it is three o'clock in the morning. He looks around the empty train station.
He sees The Shape standing there, watching them both. Stephen
looks very uncomfortable. He moves Natalie and lays her flat on the bench then
stands up and begins pacing around the station.
The Shape just stands there, watching.
Stephen turns and looks at The Shape to see the switch-blade
knife in his hand. Stephen begins breathing heavier and tries his hardest not
to look at it.
The Shape begins slowly walking towards Stephen. Stephen turns around and looks at The Shape, he is now very scared.
The Shape moves faster and grabs Stephen by his neck. Stephen
chocks. The Shape brings the switch-blade to Stephen's eye.
Stephen looks over at Natalie who is still asleep. The Shape
stops and looks too. He turns back and shoves Stephen away. Stephen falls to
the ground, chocking.
The Shape makes its way towards Natalie. Stephen jumps up and
runs over to the Shape, grabbing it by the back and pulling it away.
Stephen swings The Shape around, away from Natalie. The Shape
begins walking towards him.
Stephen punches it in the face. The Shape quickly retorts and
goes to stab Stephen. Stephen grabs The Shape's hand, stopping the knife.
STEPHEN
(Scared)
NATALIE! WAKE UP!
Natalie's eyes open. She looks over to see Stephen holding
off the knife. Stephen is looking at her. When he is not watching, The Shape
kicks him in the groin. Stephen screams and falls to the ground.
Natalie looks at the action in sheer horror. The Shape
forgets about Stephen and begins walking over to Natalie.
NATALIE
(Terrified)
Stephen!
Stephen stands up and tackles The Shape to the ground just as
it gets close to Natalie.
The Shape's switch-blade skids across the concrete.
Stephen begins violently punching The Shape in the face,
several times.
Stephen gets off and runs over to Natalie and hugs her.
Natalie looks at The Shape. He is getting up and recovering from his injuries.
NATALIE
(Terrified)
Let's go.
Natalie and Stephen go to run away when suddenly, The Shape
takes out his gun and fires, hitting Stephen in the right shoulder. Stephen
hits the ground.
NATALIE
Fuck!
Stephen lies there in agony. Natalie looks around at The
Shape. It drops the gun and turns around, retrieving his trusty switch-blade.
Natalie stands up and prepares herself.
NATALIE
You're dead...mother fucker.
The Shape picks up the switch-blade and begins walking
towards her.
Natalie looks down at the gun on the ground. She runs towards
The Shape and punches him as hard as she can in the stomach. The Shape bends
over from the blow.
Natalie then knees him in the face. The Shape's body flies
back up into the air. It hits the ground.
Natalie turns around and grabs the gun, firing on The Shape
before it even has a chance to get up.
She unloads the clip on him, hitting him several times all
over his chest.
The Shape lies there, dead.
Natalie turns around and goes over to the bleeding Stephen.
NATALIE
Are you okay?
STEPHEN
Nah, not really.
Natalie helps him up. The two of them stand there, The Shape's dead body in between them.
They hug each other, The Shape's body is unable to be seen.
STEPHEN
We need to call an ambulance.
They break the hug to see that The Shape is now standing.
They turn around to see him ominously standing there.
NATALIE
(Shouting)
Fuck!
The Shape picks up his switch-blade once again and begins speeding towards Natalie.
Stephen throws himself at The Shape. It stabs him in the gut.
Stephen's eyes widen in shock. The Shape pulls the knife from Stephen's body.
He goes limp and Stephen falls to the ground. Natalie screams
in anger.
She runs at The Shape and takes him down with one single body blow and begins savagely beating it.
Natalie stands up and, with her high heel shoe, kerb stomps
The Shape's face several times.
We see all the carnage on the train station in a wide shot.
Natalie
sighs and drags the body off the platform, dumping it on the train track.
She runs over to Stephen and turns him over. He spits out
some blood and looks up at her.
STEPHEN
Did you get him?
Natalie laughs and hugs him. We hear the sound of the train
in the distance.
STEPHEN
What time is it?
Natalie looks at Stephen's watch.
NATALIE
Three fifty nine.
STEPHEN
Perfect timing.
The train arrives. We hear the sound of it crushing The
Shape's mangled body. Natalie helps Stephen up.
The two of them walk onto the train and take a seat. The
train drives away.
We fade to black.
THE END
