HOSPITAL ROOM - AFTERNOON. Medium shot - hospital bed. We see a white haired, pale looking woman of about 70 years of age laying in a hospital bed. She is AUDREY MILLS, the mother of JACK MILLS and grandmother of MELANIE MILLS. She is dying of cancer and looks strained and weak, with several IV's hooked to her left arm. We PAN now to the right side of Mrs. Mills, where her son is seated in a chair alongside her bed. Jack Mills, a businessman in his early 40's, looks very tired, distraught and stressed out. His mother looks directly at him, her eyelids half closed from pain. GRANDMOTHER MILLS (with very weak voice) Jack, please get Melanie ... I want to see her before ... JACK MILLS I'll get her right now, Mom. She's out in the hallway. Jack Mills rises from his chair, and the camera follows him to the hallway. From his POV we now see two children, a boy of 8 and a girl of 10, seated on a bench alongside their mother. All three look sad and forlorn. The boy, JASON MILLS, a typical looking 8 year old, has short brown hair and is of average height and weight for his age. His mother, Jack's wife, is JULIE MILLS, in her late 30's, about 5'5" in height, slim figure, soft brown shoulder length hair, a very pretty woman. Melanie, age 10, a perky, inquisitive girl, with hair just like her mother, and flashing hazel eyes, is seated between her younger brother and her mother. All three members of the Mills family look up at Mr. Mills in unison as he enters the hallway from his mother's hospital room. 00020000063C0000065A636,JACK MILLS (CONT'D) Grandma wants to see you, Mel. Melanie nods and rises from the bench. JASON MILLS What about me, Dad? JACK MILLS She's already talked with you, Jason. Now she wants to speak with your sister. The camera follows Melanie into the hospital room. Melanie does not sit down, but instead stands alongside the bed and takes hold of Grandmother Mills hand. Her grandmother manages a very weak smile upon seeing Melanie. Small tears begin to form in Melanie's eyes as her grandmother squeezes her small hand tightly. GRANDMOTHER MILLS Hello, dear one. I wanted to see you one last time. Grandmother Mills begins to cough a bit. MELANIE I know, Grandma. Daddy told me. More tears begin to form in Melanie's eyes. GRANDMOTHER MILLS Don't cry, honey. I'm not sad about dying. (beat) I have had a wonderful life, and soon I will be with your grandfather again, so there is no need to cry, you see? [CLOSE SHOT] Melanie nods in understanding, but continues to cry softly. PAN to Melanie and Grandmother Mills again. GRANDMOTHER MILLS (CONT'D) You remember your Grandfather Zack, don't you, dearest? Melanie nods again. With her free hand, she withdraws a small pink handkerchief from the pocket of her skirt and wipes her eyes. GRANDMOTHER MILLS (CONT'D) He was a wonderful man, Mel, and a very good husband and father. I can't wait to be with him again. (beat) But that is not what I wanted to talk with you about. I already talked with your brother, your mom, and your dad, but I saved you for last, honey. Do you know why? (CLOSE SHOT) Melanie nods in a negative fashion. 00020000068D00000C90687,PAN to Melanie and Grandmother Mills again. GRANDMOTHER MILLS (CONT'D) Well, I shall tell you then. (beat, as she coughs again) I saved you for last, my dear child, because you are special. I saw a special quality in you from the day you were born, Melanie. MELANIE I'm not special, Grandma. I'm just me. GRANDMOTHER MILLS Oh, no, my dear, you are indeed special. You have something very magical about you. I've never been quite able to pinpoint it, but I do know you are special, and I believe there is true magic within you. It is in your heart, and in your very soul, too, I am sure. MELANIE I love you, Grandma. Tears begin to roll down Melanie's face now. GRANDMOTHER MILLS I love you, too, my sweet child. (beat, as she begins to cough harder now) Go now, Mel, and please get me the nurse. The camera follows Melanie, and from her POV we see her dash out into the hallway, where we see her parents and brother seated on the bench. All three look at her. MELANIE Grandma needs a nurse, Daddy! Right away! CUT TO: EXT. CEMETERY - RAINY MORNING. LONG SHOT - FUNERAL. We see from a distance a group of people, Melanie, Jason, Mr. and Mrs. Mills, and others, standing around a burial site. It is Mrs. Audrey Mills funeral. CREDITS BEGIN TO ROLL IN A SUPER MODE over funeral scene. FADE IN - CLOSE SHOT of funeral now as Melanie places a red rose on her Grandmother's casket, just before it is lowered in the ground. Scene of funeral remains, with people talking to one another, but we do not hear what is said at all, people heading for their cars, until credits are finished rolling on screen. CUT TO: EXT. mid-size white house in working class neighborhood 0002000006A7000013176A1,SUPER - SIX MONTHS LATER FADE TO: EXT. BACK YARD OF HOUSE - LATE AFTERNOON We see Melanie engaged in a game of fetch with her two year old black male terrier, PEPPER, in the back yard of this house. Melanie is clad in a sweater, blue jeans and worn tennis shoes. This house and scene could be in any small town, USA. Melanie is tossing the ball across the yard. The yard has no grass. It consists of only sandy colored dirt, and is very uneven in spots. It also has many holes in it. Her dog chases after each toss, fetches the ball, then returns it to her, his tail wagging joyfully. After a few tosses of the ball, the dog suddenly stops near where Melanie's last toss of the ball has landed. Instead of locking onto the ball with his teeth, as he had been doing, Pepper now begins to scratch at the earth with his front paws, near where the ball has landed, but paying no attention any longer to the ball. CUT TO: (C.U.) of PEPPER We see the very top of a worn bottle cap, about the size of a large aspirin bottle. Pepper is frantically clawing away at it, doing his best to unearth it from the ground. CUT TO: CLOSE SHOT - Melanie Melanie is watching Pepper with interest, thinking perhaps he has discovered a buried bone, then curiosity gets the best of her. The camera follows Melanie from the front as she moves closer to Pepper. We now see both her and the dog from the front. MELANIE My goodness, Pepper, what are you scratching at? Melanie bends down to look at the spot where Pepper is still frantically clawing away. She catches sight of a dust covered bottle cap, just as the dog had uncovered almost half of the worn bottle. Her right hand reaches out towards the bottle. 00020000061E000019B8618,MELANIE (CONT'D) What have we here? Bending down further now, she gently pushes Pepper aside and begins tugging at the old bottle with her small hands. A moment later she has freed it from its burial and holds it in her hands. CLOSE shot - Pepper Pepper barks and wags his tail as he watches Melanie surveying the old bottle that she holds in her hands. Close shot - Melanie Melanie dusts the dirt and dust from the bottle quickly, and her eyes become fixed now on the worn label on the backside of the bottle. Close up - Bottle label We see the label and read it as Melanie reads it aloud in a hushed but somewhat excited tone. MELANIE (CONT'D) Directions: This bottle contains ten Madam Xenia magic stones. The finder of these stones is entitled to ten separate wishes. Place one stone at a time in your pocket, make your wish, and do not remove the stone from your pocket until your wish has been fulfilled. Once your wish has been fulfilled, throw away the stone. Close up - melanie's face Melanie's face depicts excitement and her bright eyes are flashing and aglow. Close shot - melanie (from waist up, crouched down, still clutching the bottle in her hands) as she begins to read the label for a second time, still in a hushed tone, but with far more excitement now. MELANIE (CONT'D) ... Once your wish has been fulfilled, throw away the stone. (beat, as she notices more writing,in smaller print, which she had missed seeing when she read the label the first time) These magic stones will expire in 300 years. Not to be used after December, 2005. 00020000069F00001FD0699,Melanie gasps aloud after reading that! She looks at Pepper. MELANIE (CONT'D) Wow, Pepper, these stones are really old! CUT TO: EXT. Back Door of house opens and we see Mrs. Mills standing there, clad in a dress and wearing an apron. MRs. Mills Melanie, are you out here? It's almost time for dinner. Time to come in and set the table, honey. CUT TO: EXT. Far side of backyard where melanie and pepper are. MELANIE I'm over here, Mom, with Pepper. I'll be right in. Melanie quickly rises from her crouched position, tucks the bottle in her sweater pocket, and heads for the back door of the house, with Pepper in close pursuit. CUT TO: Int. melanie's bedroom. same day. It is a small bedroom, typical of a 10 year old girl's bedroom. Lots of pink and white colors, posters on the wall, etc. Melanie quickly removes the bottle from the pocket of her sweater, tucks it under her bed, then we follow with MOVING SHOT as she scurries down the stairs to the kitchen. CUT TO: Int. Kitchen - same DAY - early evening. We watch as Melanie helps set the dinner table. We can see from the look on Melanie's face that she is deep in thought as she sets the table. We see only the backside of Mrs. Mills, busy at the stove, and who is paying no attention to her daughter. Mr. Mills and Jason now enter the kitchen area and sit at the table. We see Mrs. Mills serving dinner, and then she too sits down at the table and dinner commences. Medium shot - all four characters seated at table, with Mr. Mills at one end, mrs. Mills at other end, jason and melanie across from one another. MR. Mills I've got to get that back yard cleaned up soon, honey. It is a real mess out there. MRS. MILLS 00020000060C00002669606,Yes, it is, Jack. Maybe you can do it this Saturday, yes? MR. MILLS That's a good idea. I don't want the kids getting hurt out there. There are way too many lumps and holes that need flattening and filling. Jason MILLS I don't see why we had to move here anyway. I liked our other house a whole lot better. MR. MILLS Now, Jason, you know why we had to move. That was all explained to both you and your sister by your mother and I over three months ago. JASON MILLS Because of Grandma, right? MR. MILLS Yes, that's right. Your Grandmother cost us a lot of money for medical expenses, and we could not afford to live in our other house any longer, so we had to sell it and move here. (beat) Not that your mom and I regret doing what we had to do to help her, but she did not have enough insurance, so we had to pay the hospital and doctors on our own. (beat) You do understand that, don't you, son? CLOSE UP - jason, tinkering with his food. JASON MILLS Yeah, I guess so. I loved Grandma' a lot, but I still wish we lived back in our other house. Medium Shot - of all four characters at table. MRS. MILLS Anyone care for more roast beef? No one replies, so Mrs. Mills sets the plate of roast beef back down on the table. MR. MILLS (looking towards Melanie) Well, you certainly are quiet tonight, Pumpkin. Did you have a bad day at school? MELANIE Oh no, Daddy. It was a good day at school. MR. MILLS Well, why so quiet then? MELANIE Uh, I dunno'. I was just thinking about something. MR. MILLS Oh, and may I ask what? MELANIE Well ... 00020000061300002C6F60D,(beat) What if you had ten wishes, Daddy. What would you wish for? MR. MILLS (chuckling slightly) (beat) Ten wishes, hm? I would think one or two would be enough. (beat) But let me see ... (beat) Well, to be sure, I would wish that all of us would live long and happy lives, and that we would all be healthy. How many wishes would that be? MELANIE I think that would be two wishes, Daddy. JASON MILLS (interrupting) I know what I'd wish for! I'd wish for the entire Robot Extreme collection! There are ten parts to it! The other three family members ignore Jason's remarks. MRS. MILLS What made you ask your father a question like that, honey? Are you studying fairy tales now in class? MELANIE I just wondered, Mom, that's all. (beat) What would you wish for, Mom? Mrs. Mills is silent for a moment as she thinks. MRS. MILLS I suppose the same things as your father, dear. However, a promotion at work for your dad would be awful nice, too. If that happened, we could really fix up that back yard properly, not to mention pay some overdue bills. Mr. Mills lets out a small laugh. MR. MILLS I don't think that's likely to happen, Julie. There is a district manager's job opening next month, but I doubt that my name will even be thought of. (beat) It would surely be nice though. It pays almost three times what I'm making now. MRS. MILLS Oh, wouldn't that be wonderful! We could certainly use the extra money, that's for sure. JASON MILLS (in an exited voice) If you get the manager's job, Daddy, can I have the Robot Extreme collection? 00020000062D0000327C627,Mr. Mills chuckles. MR. MILLS Sure thing, champ. But don't count on it. It would take a miracle for me to get that district manager's job. MELANIE (V.O.) Or maybe just some magic! MRS. MILLS Well, it's nice to dream a bit, I suppose. But mow it's time we all get back to reality, I think. (beat) Melanie, will you please help me clear the table? Mrs. Mills stands up. MELANIE Yes, Mom. MRS. MILLS And, Jason, you need to take out the trash, then get busy on your homework. JASON MILLS (protesting) Aw', Mom, can't I watch Action-Man first? He comes on in ten minutes. MRS. MILLS (smiling) No, you cannot. Action-Man will have to wait for you. The trash and your homework come first, young man. JASON MILLS (groans) Okay, but how about if I take out the trash, then watch Action-Man, then do my homework? Please, Mom? Mrs. Mills sighs. MRS. MILLS Very well. But you better have all that homework done by bed time, is that understood? JASON MILLS (now smiling broadly) I will, Mom, I promise! FADE OUT. FADE TO: INT. Upstairs bedroom of melanie. - that Night. Medium shot - melanie seated at side of her bed in her pajamas. Melanie has taken out the bottle from beneath her bed and opens the cap. The cap is extremely tight, and it takes some doing before she is able to open it. She places the cap on the bedspread and pours out the contents of the bottle on to her pillow. We watch as she counts the small stones that are now on her pillow. We see a puzzled look on her small face as she counts them a second time. Close up - of stones, showing only nine of them. 000200000647000038A3641,MELANIE (V.O.) Well, someone must have used one of them. (beat) Either that or Madam Xenia was not very good at math. Melanie carefully places all nine stones back into the bottle, screws back on the cap, the tucks the bottle back under her bed. Pan to melanie's bedroom door opening, and from Melanie's p.o.v. we see Mr. And Mrs. Mills enter melanie's bedroom. They both kiss Melanie good-night, then switch off her small night stand lamp and leave. We view Melanie tossing and turning in her bed in the darkness. Thoughts of the magic stones, which are not much larger than the pills her grandmother used to take during her illness, race through her mind, and we see these thoughts on screen. We also see Melanie picturing what Madam Xenia might look like (an elderly lady in a long black dress, with many teeth missing). Melanie pictures Madam Xenia as a possible witch, but she is sure Madam Xenia is a GOOD witch though. Finally, we see a CLOSE UP shot of Melanie's head on her pillow as she at last falls into a deep sleep. CUT TO: INT. UPSTAIRS BEDROOM OF MELANIE. NEXT DAY - EARLY MORNING. Our MOVING SHOT continues as Melanie leaves the doorway of Jason's room and returns to her own bedroom. She sits on her bed and begins to weep softly, covering her face with her hands. MELANIE (V.O.) Oh, Grandma! Grandma! What am I going to do? My stones are gone! FADE IN: ExT. melanie's neighborhood - same morning. Moving shot - frontal view of melanie and kayla walking to school together. KAYLA Hey, girlfriend, what's wrong with you today? Why so quiet? MELANIE (with sadness in her voice) Mmm, I don't know. Kayla looks at Melanie's face as they walk. KAYLA Hey, you look like you've been crying. What's up, Mel? Melanie just shrugs. KAYLA (CONT'D) Come on, Mel. You can tell me. Am I not your best friend in the whole wide world? Melanie nods in the affirmative. KAYLA (CONT'D) Well, what is it then? What's bothering you? MELANIE Well, ... something is missing from my bedroom, and I can't find it. KAYLA What is it? What's missing? MELANIE I - I can't say, Kayla. It's real personal, you know? KAYLA Okay. Well, is it something big or something small? MELANIE Small. It's about the size of a large aspirin bottle. KAYLA Oh. Well, did you check with your mom? Your dad? What about your little brother? Could one of them have taken it? 0002000006E90000B4666E3,MELANIE I checked with my mom and with Jason, too. They don't have it. My dad is at work, but he never goes in my room unless I am there, so he wouldn't have it. (beat) Hey, do you remember last Saturday, when you and Tammy brought that new girl, Amy, over to my house? KAYLA Yeah, sure, why? MELANIE Well, I don't know, but maybe she took it. KAYLA What?! I don't think so, Mel. Why would she take something from your room? (beat) Where did you have this thing anyway? MELANIE Under my bed. KAYLA Well, I don't think Amy took anything from your room, Mel. I don't know her all that well, since she just transferred here from JFK, but she seems really nice. (beat) Besides, we were all in your room together, so how could she have taken anything. We see Melanie deep in thought for a few seconds. MELANIE No, we weren't. Remember, when my mom called us down for cake and milk? You and I went downstairs to get it and Tammy went to the bathroom, so Amy was in my room alone for awhile. Remember? KAYLA Oh, yeah, that's right. I remember that. But still, Mel, I don't think she took anything. I mean, why would she suddenly decide to look under your bed? It doesn't make any sense. MELANIE Maybe not, but I think I am going to ask her anyway. I have to! CUT TO: Ext. LINCOLN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - later THAT SAME day. Medium shot - melanie and amy, a dark haired girl, 10 years of age, are standing outside the school. I don't think she likes me any more now, and I don't think she took my magic stones. I better apologize to her, Grandma, huh? (beat) But I sure wish I knew what happened to my stones. CUT TO: INT. Melanie's class room - the NEXT morning. Moving shot - we see melanie placing a folded note on amy's desk. Just as melanie takes her own seat at her desk, we see amy enter the classroom, along with three or four other students. She sits down and sees the note. Back to medium shot of melanie and her father on sofa, as tv volume lowers considerably. MR. MILLS How sad that no one could find that poor woman's son. MELANIE I know, Daddy. That's very, very sad. Dear God, and you too, Madam Xenia, please let that poor woman's son find her in time for Christmas! MRS. MILLS (O.C.) Melanie, are you coming down to eat with us? I'll fold the clothes right after dinner, okay? MRS. MILLS Well, okay, that will be fine. (beat) When you are done, honey, we can all go watch the carollers together at Hudson Park. Is that okay with you, dear? MR. MILLS Sure, sounds like fun. MELANIE Has anybody seen Pepper? MRS. MILLS Yes, honey, he's outside. Why? MELANIE I want to have a talk with him. MR. MILLS (smiling) That should be interesting. JaSON MILLS Yeah, think he'll talk back, Mel? Mr. and Mrs. Mills smile at Jason's remark, and finally, so does Melanie. CUT TO: INT. UPSTAIRS BEDROOM OF MELANIE - later that night. Medium shot - melanie in pajamas in her bed. MELANIE We went to see the carollers tonight, Grandma, and all the time they were singing, I was thinking of you, because I remember how much you liked hearing them sing at Christmas time. (beat) I made my wish tonight for that poor lady to be with her son on Christmas Day, but Pepper had taken my magic stones and got goo and junk all over the bottle, so I don't know if they will work anymore. I hope they do though. (beat) I put the magic stones bottle under my pillow, Grandma, after I found it, so Pepper couldn't get at it again. But before I came to bed tonight, I put it in my school backpack. I think it will be safer there, don't you? (beat) Are they going to have a big birthday party tomorrow for our Lord, Grandma? I'll bet they are, huh? I hope you and Grandpa get to go! UNCLE RICK Well, that was one fabulous Christmas dinner, Julie. You really outdid yourself this year! MRS. UNCLE RICK Oops, my error! Thank you, sweetheart, and thank you, too, Melanie. The dinner was delicious. Aunt Becky leans over and kisses her husband on the cheek. Living room of mills house - a minute or so later. Pan shot - Melanie and her dad on sofa watching tv screen. Close up - tv screen, as volume increases. DAN WHITMAN Good evening, everyone, and Merry Christmas to all of you. We start off our newscast tonight with a special live report from our roving reporter, George Jeffers. George, take it away. The TV screen now shows reporter George Jeffers, standing outside the home of Mrs. Stemming, the cancer stricken lady. We can see several cars parked around her house, and can hear the sounds of Christmas music coming from within her home. George Jeffers Good evening, Dan and Paula, and Merry Christmas to everyone. Well, Santa seems to have come a bit late this Christmas to the Stemming residence, but he did indeed come! At about two this afternoon, this home behind me became a place of real Christmas jubilation when Mrs. Stemming, who is terminally ill with cancer, got her sole Christmas wish fulfilled. Her only son, Robert, along with his wife and three children, knocked on her door shortly after two p.m. with gifts galore, and with the help of friends and neighbors made this Christmas holiday a most rejoicing one for the elderly Mrs. Stemming. It seems that her son, who lives some two thousand miles away, flew in this morning, with his family in tow, rented a car, and is now inside and reunited with his mother. As you can tell from the bright lights and music coming from within the Stemming home, Dan and Paula, a good time seems to be in progress for all. At any rate, it is indeed a warm and wonderful feeling to know that this woman, who is probably spending her last Christmas on earth, got to realize her Christmas wish. That's about it from here, Dan and Paula, so now back to you in the studio. This is George Jeffers, reporting live for channel six. 0002000006360000DC72630,PAULA KENT George, did you get any indication as to just how Mrs. Stemming's son was located? GEORGE JEFFERS No, Paula, sorry, I did not. All we know so far is that he was located via a third party, and that is about it. Back to medium shot of melanie and her father on sofa, as volume fades out from tv set. Melanie has tears in her eyes. MR. MILLS Well, that was certainly a heart warming Christmas story, wasn't it, Pumpkin? MELANIE Oh, yes, Daddy! It was a wonderful story! I am so glad that poor lady got to spend Christmas with her son and his family. MR. MILLS Well, how about some Monopoly, sweetie? Are you up for it? MELANIE Sure, Daddy. I just have to do one thing first, then I'll be right back. Moving shot - melanie. We see Melanie head upstairs. She enters her bedroom, takes the fourth stone from her pocket and tosses it into the trash basket in her room. MELANIE (V.O.) (CONT'D) Thank You, God, and thank you, Madam Xenia, for letting that sick woman spend Christmas with her son and his family. (beat) Merry Christmas, Grandma. Did you and Grandpa get to go to Jesus's birthday party? Did He have a big cake? I'll bet He did, huh? FADE TO: Int. Ice skating rink - day. Melanie skates over to the railing now, where Amy has just finished putting on her skates. Amy looks up and sees Melanie coming towards her, but her face is expressionless. She seems unsure of what Melanie might want with her. Melanie stops at the railing, now she is facing Amy. Our MOVING SHOT focuses now on both girls. MELANIE (CONT'D) (rather nervously) Hi, Amy. Amy looks up, but does not reply or show any emotion. MELANIE (CONT'D) Would you like to join us? Amy just stares at her, with an uneasy expression on her face. After a long beat, she answers. Amy Are you sure you want me to? MELANIE Oh, yes! I would really like you to, and so would Tammy and Kayla. AMY You're not still mad at me? MELANIE No .. I never really was. I was wrong to talk to you that day the way I did. I was just so upset. (beat) I never should have talked that way to you though, and I am truly sorry. I really am, Amy. That's why I wrote you that note. AMY It was a nice note, Melanie, and I am glad you wrote it, but I didn't know if you still wanted to be friends. MELANIE Oh, yes! That is, if you want to, and can forgive me for being such a jerk. Amy smiles. AMY I forgive you. So, are we friends then? Melanie smiles widely. MELANIE Oh, yes! Friends forever, okay? The two girls hug over the guard railing. MELANIE (CONT'D) Come on! Let's race Tammy and Kayla! You want to? Amy nods and smiles, then climbs under the railing to join Melanie. Our MOVING SHOT continues as we follow the antics on the ice by the four girls. During the race, Melanie loses her balance, and falls on her bottom, sliding across the ice like a seal. (beat) That is, if everyone wants to pass to the fifth grade, and I am sure you all do, yes? ENTIRE CLASS (O.C.) Yes, Mrs. Kane. MRS. KANE Good. Well, it is almost time for the bell to sound. Let's get our jackets and sweaters on, boys and girls, and line up at the door, please? We hear lots of shuffling now as the kids don their coats, sweaters and jackets. MRS. KANE (CONT'D) Melanie, would you stay after a minute, please? Medium shot now of melanie via moving shot as she stands alongside her desk in the aisle, putting on her jacket. We see a curious look now on melanie's face as she ponders what her teacher wants with her. MELANIE Yes, Ma'am. We hear the sound of school bell, announcing the end of the school day, and we see via the MOVING SHOT the children of the class filing out of the classroom. We hear noise in the outer hall until MOVING CAMERA follows Mrs. Kane to the door, and she shuts it. All is quiet in the room now. MOving shot follows mrs. Kane back to her desk, and she sits behind it, with melanie standing in front of it. We pan back and forth from Mrs. Kane to melanie as they interact. MRS. kANE Melanie, you are a very good student, and I know how much you like poetry, so I wanted to give you something that I hope you will enjoy. She hands an old book of poems to Melanie. Melanie take it, and looks at the book cover, which is quite worn. MRS. KANE (CONT'D) That is a very old book, Melanie. I have had it since I was about your age. My mother gave it to me, and she told me to pass it on one day to someone special. I think you are the one she would have wanted me to pass it on to. Melanie looks at the book cover again, then to Mrs. Kane. MELANIE Thank you very much, Mrs. Kane, but are you sure you want to part with it? 00020000060C0000F244606,Mrs. Kane smiles at Melanie. MRS. KANE Very sure. Enjoy it. There are a lot of great poems in there, all written by wonderful poets. I think you will enjoy all of them. MELANIE Thank you again, ever so much, Mrs. Kane. But if you ever want it back, please just let me know, and I will return it to you, okay? Mrs. Kane smiles. MRS. KANE No, you keep it. Maybe one day, I will be reading a book and find a poem or two in it written by you. Melanie laughs slightly. MELANIE I don't think so, Ma'am. I love reading poems, but I don't think I would do well writing them. (beat) Besides, I don't really want to be a poet. MRS. KANE Oh? What do you want to be, Melanie? MELANIE A teacher ... just like you! You are the best teacher in the whole world! Mrs. Kane smiles broadly. MRS. kANE Well, thank you, Melanie. I don't think that's quite true, but it's very nice to hear, just the same. Melanie clasps the book tightly. MELANIE Thank you again, Mrs. Kane. I will start reading it tonight. MRS. KANE Try reading one poem a day. That works really well. (beat) You had best get to heading home now, Melanie. Enjoy the book. Melanie nods, and our MOVING CAMERA follows her from behind as she departs the classroom. Cut TO: InT. - Lincoln school girl's gym locker room - day. Moving shot - all four girls. CUT TO: Moving shot - all four girls. The other three girls stop what they are doing (changing their shoes from sneakers to street shoes) and look at Melanie. KAYLA What? Melanie looks towards Kayla. MELANIE Someone stole a bottle I had in my backpack! A slight sign of tears begins to form now in Melanie's eyes. TAMMY What was in it, soda? MELANIE No, it wasn't soda, Tam! It was something important! It's gone! It was in here when we went out to the gym. AMY Hey, I came in to use the bathroom between games, remember? Melanie looks at Amy now. MELANIE Yes. Did you see anyone else in here, Amy, when you came in? Amy's face shows signs now of hard thinking. AMY (in an excited tone now) Yeah, Mel, come to think of it, I did! MELANIE Who was it? AMY That big girl from the sixth grade. I don't know her name, but she was wearing a green T-shirt with big white lettering on it. KAYLA Oh, I know who that is, Mel! That's Karen Bradshaw. She is a real bad person. No one likes her. She's mean and sort of a bully, too. Melanie looks at Kayla. MELANIE Does she live near us, Kay? KAYLA Oh, no! She lives way out of town. She buses in with a few other kids. (beat) But I know her house. My dad took us all out there one time when he bought some stuff from her father so he could fix up our lawn. MELANIE I want to go out to her house right now! Will you go with me, Kay, and show me where it is? 0002000006370000FE8F631,KAYLA (sighs) We can't do that, Mel. It's way too far. You can catch up with her tomorrow here at school. (beat) What was in that bottle anyway that is so important? MELANIE Uh, something my grandmother gave me before she died. I don't want to lose it. Melanie has a sad and distraught look on her face. Kayla puts an arm around her. Kayla Come on, Mel. Let's go. You can catch up with that girl tomorrow. We now see all four girls leaving the locker room from behind via the MOVING SHOT. Cut TO: Int. - Lincoln school hallway - next day. Moving shot - as melanie walks towards Karen bradshaw, who is in the company of another rough looking girl. Karen is big, even for her age of 12, and towers over melanie. Melanie steps up to her, blocking her path. MELANIE Excuse me. Are you Karen Bradshaw? Karen and her friend stop in their tracks. They are both now facing Melanie in the hallway. Karen Yeah, so what? Who are you? MELANIE I'm Melanie Mills, and I think maybe you have something that belongs to me. Karen and her friend laugh. KAREN Oh, you do, huh? And just what might that be, short stuff? MELANIE A bottle, with some stones in it. My friends said you were in the girls locker room yesterday while we were playing volleyball in the gym. I thought maybe you might have seen my bottle. It was in my backpack in the locker room. Karen stares down at Melanie with a menacing glare. KAREN Hey, you little squirt, are you accusing me of taking something from your backpack? Melanie backs off a little now. MELANIE No, not really. I just wondered if maybe you saw who did? 0002000006D7000104C06D1,Karen and her friend laugh again. KAREN I don't know anything about your bottle, or your backpack, and you better not be accusing me of anything either, or you'll be real sorry you did! MELANIE She took it, Kayla! I know she did! I could tell from the look on her face when I talked to her. KAYLA Well, what are you going to do about it, Mel? You aren't going to try to fight with her, are you? Melanie shakes her head sideways. MELANIE No, fighting never solved anything. Besides, she's way too big! (beat) I need to get out to her house, get inside it, and find that bottle. I know she has it, Kayla! KAYLA Are you crazy, Mel? How do you plan to do that? Melanie's head turns slightly to look at Kayla, as they continue walking. MELANIE Uh, well, with your help, I hope. Kayla looks now at Melanie, as they continue walking. KAYLA What?! With my help? What do you mean? The girls walk slower now, almost coming to a halt. MELANIE Well, you know where she lives, right? You could show me the way out there. Both girls stop walking now, and Kayla turns towards Melanie and looks at her. KAYLA It's far, Mel. It's almost in the country. We could never walk out there. It's even too far to ride to on our bikes! MELANIE Well, we could take a bus then. (beat) Look, I have some money for the bus. Tomorrow is Saturday, and they are having the big St. Patrick's Day parade downtown. Almost everyone in town will be going to it. We could tell our parents we are going together to the parade, then we get on the bus and ride out to that Karen's house, see? 0002000006A600010B916A0,KAYLA I - I don't know, Mel. (beat) Even if we do that, how do you plan on getting in her house? And what if they are at home? MELANIE I'll figure that all out when we get there. Will you do it? Will you come with me? I can't do it without you? Please? KAYLA I've got a bad feeling about this, girlfriend, but, okay, I'll do it. I'll go with you. (beat) I wish I knew what was in that bottle. You must want it back real bad! MELANIE I do! It's real important to me, Kayla. I wish I could tell you what is in it, but I can't. You just have to trust me, okay? Kayla sighs long and hard. KAYLA Okay. What time do you want to go tomorrow? MELANIE I'll meet you downtown, in front of Clark's department store, at one o'clock, okay? KaYLA Okay. The two girls finally reach the intersection when their directions home change, and they come to a halt and face one another. They hug. MELANIE Thanks, Kayla. (beat) Anyway, I called up the bus service this morning, and they said they go out as far as Ridge Road. Is that close to that Karen's house? 00020000065700011231651,KAYLA Well, sort of ..but we will have to walk some after that. MELANIE How far? KAYLA Mmm, I don't know for sure ..maybe half a mile or so. (beat) Hey, how come there's not many people around? I thought they were having the big parade today? MELANIE They are, but it doesn't start for another hour. Anyway, it begins over on Fourth Street. KAYLA Oh. Well, where do we catch the bus? MELANIE Across the street. Come on, let's go. Our camera pans upward to show the sky, which now has some black clouds heading their way from the south. KAYLA I think it's going to rain pretty soon, Mel. We better get moving. Moving shot - of melanie and kayla walking down the dirt road. We finally see a couple of houses, off in the distance, from their P.O.V. via quick LONG SHOT, then we go back to the MOVING SHOT of the two girls walking, side by side. They are both clad in blue jeans, tennis shoes and sweatshirts, with side pockets and hoods. Kayla is wearing a baseball cap. Zoom shot - karen bradshaw's house. It is an old house, rather worn down and not carefully attended to. It badly needs a painting, and there are old tires and other junk in the front yard. 0002000008A8000118828A2,Back to moving shot - melanie and kayla walking. Kayla points to the house. KAYLA (CONT'D) That's it, Mel! That's her house. Close up - melanie's face, as she studies the house carefully from the dirt road. MELANIE Wow, this is cool! There isn't another house around, so no one can see us! The two start to walk faster now towards the house. KAYLA Yeah, as best I remember, when I came out here with my dad, the closest house is way down the road to the left. MELANIE The driveway is empty, and the garage door is wide open. I don't see any cars, do you? KAYLA No. Maybe they all went to the parade in town, like you figured. Melanie smiles, as they get closer to the house. A few drops of rain now start to fall on the girls, and the sun has disappeared. Wind starts to howl now, too. MELANIE Come on, let's move, Kayla! I think we're in for a bad storm soon! The two girls run now and our MOVING SHOT follows them as they reach the gravel driveway of the old run down house. KAYLA Hey, I'll bet we can get inside from the garage! CUT TO: Int. - garage. Two-shot - showing the two girls in the garage. The pair now enter the semi-dark garage. Melanie sees a door leading from the garage to the house, tries the handle, and it opens to the kitchen. Rain is now starting to pour down outside, and we can hear it but do not see it. Pan shot - of kitchen from melanie's and kayla's p.o.v. We see a semi-dark kitchen, with lots of dirty dishes and glasses piled up in the sink. The kitchen sink faucet is leaking slowly and we can hear its dripping sounds. We can also now hear the rain, which has increased in force, beating down on the old house. The two step gingerly into the kitchen area. KAYLA God, it stinks in here, Mel! MELANIE I know! It's totally yucky! KAYLA Do you think your bottle's in here? MELANIE I doubt it. I figure it would probably be in her bedroom, wherever that is. KAYLA Well, let's find her bedroom, get your bottle, and get out of here! I want to go home! This place sucks! Just then, the telephone rings, and it is a very shrilling ring. The two girls almost scream and stop flat in their tracks. They hold their breath tightly as the phone rings five times, then stops. 0002000008EA000121248E4,When the phone finally stops ringing, they both let out their breath and sigh hard. Kayla (cONT'D) God, that was creepy! MELANIE I know .. but at least now we know for sure no one is here! Moving shot - follows kayla and melanie as they survey the entire downstairs area, hand in hand, walking slowly and cautiously as they do so. We see the entire downstairs area via a PAN SHOT, and we note that the living room, dining area, laundry room, and family room, are all unkempt, with furniture that is old and worn. Our camera finally comes to rest on a dusty staircase that leads to the upper floor. The two girls stand at the foot of the staircase and look upward. Melanie turns to Kayla. Two-shot - melanie and kayla at foot of staircase. MELANIE (CONT'D) Look, Kayla, you stay down here. That way you can yell out and warn me if someone is coming. Just stand by the front window in the living room and watch for any cars, okay? I'll go upstairs and see if I can find her bedroom. KAYLA (with hesitation) Okay, but please hurry, Mel! MELANIE I will. I promise! Moving shot - melanie heading quickly up the stairs. CUT TO: Int - upstairs area of old bradshaw house. We hear the sounds now of booming thunder and also hear the rain pouring down on the old house as Melanie races up the stairs. SLAM CUT TO: Int. - bradshaw house living room. Medium shot - kayla standing in front of living room window, staring outside at the rain. She looks very frightened. Cut TO: Int. Upstairs rooms in bradshaw house. Moving shot - melanie looking at the three upstairs rooms, which are all bedrooms. The first one is the parents bedroom, and she views it from its doorway, and we see it from her p.o.v. It is also dusty, with worn furniture and an unmade bed. The second bedroom appears to be used as a sewing room. We see an old sewing machine, a rocker, some tables, etc., but no bed. The third one is obviously a young girl's bedroom. Melanie observes it from its doorway. It is a bit cleaner than the other rooms, but not by much. there are some posters on the walls - two rock star posters, one with stains at the corners, and two posters of guys on motorcycles. The bed is made, but the bedspread is in need of a good cleaning. there is only one dresser in the room. 0002000006ED00012A086E7,Melanie heads for the lone dresser in the bedroom, opens the drawers, and begins searching through them. As she goes through the third drawer, searching under some gym socks, she finds the bottle. CUT TO: Close up - melanie's hand clutching the bottle. KAYLA (O.C.) (shouting in panic) Melanie, someone is coming! A car is coming down the road! I think it's them! Back to close up shot - this shot of melanie tucking the bottle in the side pocket of her sweatshirt. MELANIE (shouting back to Kayla) I found it, Kayla! I found it! SLAM CUT TO: Moving shot - melanie. Melanie slams the drawer shut and races out of the room. She runs down the stairs, just as we see car lights flashing on the window that Kayla is standing in front of. Cut TO: Int. - bradshaw living room. Moving shot - melanie and kayla. Melanie grabs Kayla by the arm and pulls her, as she heads back towards the laundry room. We can still hear the rain smashing against the house, but over that sound, we also hear the engine of an old car pulling into the gravel driveway alongside the house. MELANIE Come on! We've got to get out of here! Our MOVING SHOT continues, as we follow Melanie and Kayla to the laundry room. There is a back door there. Melanie attempts to open it, but it won't open. It is stuck. She tries again and again, but it will not open. Kayla is just behind her, and she is trembling now. KAYLA Oh, Mel! What are we going to do?! I'm scared! CUT TO: Int. - laundry room. Two-shot - MELANIE AND KAYLA STANDING in laundry room. We now can hear (off camera) the sounds of people entering the house via the garage door. Melanie puts her finger to her lips, as a signal for Kayla to be quiet, as the two girls slump to the laundry room floor and huddle next to the dryer. 00020000066A000130EF664,We hear the door from the garage to the kitchen being slammed now. Our camera remains on Melanie and Kayla in the laundry room. Both girls have frightened looks on their faces. Mr. Bradshaw (O.C.) (in gruff and loud voice) What a waste of time! I told ya', Helen, I didn't want to go to no stinkin' parade! Look at me now, woman! I'm soaked to my skin! Mrs. Bradshaw (O.C.) Now, Charlie, don't be like that, please? I'm all wet, too, and so is Karen Beth, and we ain't complain' none. Mr. BRADSHAW (O.C.) Ah, jeez! Jus' get me a beer, huh? I'm goin' in the livin' room and see what's on the TV. MrS. BRADSHAW (O.C.) Don't you wanna' dry off some first, honey? Mr. BRADSHAW (O.C.) Maybe later. Right now, I jus' wanna' rest some and have a cold one. MrS. BRADSHAW (O.C.) Okay, honey, whatever you say. You go rest and watch the TV and I'll bring you your beer right away. (beat) Karen, get your Pa a towel from the dryer and bring it to him, while I get his beer. KAREN (O.C.) Yes, Ma. Melanie and Kayla look at one another, realizing where they are and the fact that Karen is going to soon be coming into the laundry room. They get up rapidly, and run as fast as they can out of the laundry room, and our MOVING SHOT follows them to the back door, just some twenty feet from the laundry room. We see Karen entering the laundry room now, but she does not look towards the back door, so she fails to spot the two girls. Melanie turns the knob of the back door and it opens. CUT TO: Ext. - back yard of bradshaw house. Two-shot - melanie and kayla - standing just behind the back door of the house, facing the back yard now. 00020000068D00013753687,It is still raining, but not as hard, as the pair looks around the yard, obviously seeking the best and fastest way out of there. They both pull up their sweatshirt hoods over their heads. Melanie grabs Kayla's hand. MELANIE Come on, let's go! KAYLA Which way? MELANIE Who cares? Let's just get out of here! SLAM CUT TO: Ext. - BACK YARD OF BRADSHAW HOUSE. Long shot - Melanie and kayla beginning to run from the house via the backyard. There is no back fence, just a wooded area to the rear of the backyard. As Melanie and Kayla begin running, we see a mean Doberman dog to their left. He begins to bark loudly and in a ferocious manner. The two girls, hearing him bark, look back suddenly, see him, and run even faster. The dog is on a chain, but it is a very long chain. Our LONG SHOT continues, as we see the dog gaining ground on the girls, who are now both screaming in fear as they run towards the woods. Their screams cannot be heard by the Bradshaw family, due to the very loud noise of the rain beating down on their house. Just as the dog almost catches up to them, his chain expires. He lets out a howling yelp of pain as his front paws rise and he is pulled backwards a bit by the chain. The girls continue to run until they are in the woods in the now slowing rain. Fade TO: Int. - Living room of bradshaw house. Long shot - mr. Bradshaw, a homely big man or about 50 years of age, wearing coveralls and a dirty t-shirt, is seated on the worn sofa, drinking beer from a can. We see a wrestling match playing on the tv before him. A large bath towel is at his side, rumpled. Mr. BRADSHAW (shouting) Hey, what the hell was that damn dog barking at? 00020000080500013DDA7FF,MrS. BRADSHAW (O.C.) I don't know, Charlie, but he's stopped now. Maybe that cat from down the road was here again, teasing him. Mr. Bradshaw takes a gulp from his beer can. Mr. BRADSHAW Yeah, well, if I see that cat, I'm gonna' put a shotgun shell in his furry hide! (beat) Get me another beer, will ya'? This one's empty, Helen. CUT TO: Ext. - woods behind bradshaw house. Moving shot - melanie and kayla running in the woods. Melanie and Kayla run through the woods. The rain has almost stopped now, but both girls are soaked. We see them running, and hear them breathing hard, side by side. A log is laying in their way, half-covered by wet leaves and other debris, and the two trip over it. We see the girls fall to the ground, and see the bottle leave Melanie's sweatshirt pocket and hit the ground. The cap flies off, and the remaining stones fall to the ground, coming to rest finally in the mud that is there. Both girls lay motionless, on their stomachs, side by side. FADE TO BLACK. FADE IN: Ext. - WOODS BEHIND BRADSHAW HOUSE. Two-shot - melanie and kayla. The rain has completely stopped now. Melanie moans a bit, then begins to move a little. Kayla still lays still and silent. Melanie turns her head, and has a groggy and disoriented look on her face. She now starts to rise, slowly and uneasily. She is facing the opposite way from where Kayla is laying, so does not see her yet. She does spot the bottle though. She reaches out and grabs the bottle, then sees the cap, nearby the bottle, and she picks that up, too. Her back is still to Kayla. She then takes notice that the bottle is empty. She looks on the ground and sees the stones now - all five of them - laying in the mud. She quickly gathers them up, wipes them a bit with her hands, then drops them into the bottle and screws the cap back on it. She tucks the bottle into the side pocket of her now dirty sweatshirt. Her sweatshirt is caked with mud and other debris from her fall. She now looks around and spots Kayla. A look of panic crosses her face. 0002000006F0000145D96EA,MELANIE (shouting) Kayla! Kayla! She kneels down and places her hands on Kayla's back, shaking Kayla a bit, hoping to revive her. MELANIE (CONT'D) (still shouting) Kayla! Kayla! Wake up! (beat) Oh, dear God! Dear God! Kayla, please wake up! Melanie shakes Kayla some more, but Kayla lays silent and motionless. MELANIE (CONT'D) (starts to cry) Oh, my God! She's dead! Melanie notices a rock now, right near Kayla's head, and it has blood on it. Melanie screams. CUT TO: Ext.- Woods behind bradshaw house. Long shot - Melanie running fast. We see, via the LONG SHOT, Melanie racing from the woods, down the dirt road to the house nearest the Bradshaw house. CUT TO: Ext. - Porch of house. Medium shot - melanie bangs on front door of house. CuT TO: Ext. - pORCH OF HOUSE. Medium shot - woman opens door. We see a short, stocky WOMAN, of about 65, wearing a house dress. She has a puzzled look on her face, as if wondering who this young girl is, and why she was banging so hard on her door. Woman What is it, child? What do you want? Cut TO: Two-shot - melanie and woman on porch. MELANIE (with much panic in her voice) Please help me! Please help me! My friend is laying in the woods over there, and I think she is dead! Melanie begins crying again, as she points to the woods. The woman steps clear out now onto the porch, and looks out to the woods that Melanie is pointing to. WOMAN What?! MELANIE (sobbing) My friend! My friend Kayla is laying out there, and she's not moving! This big dog was chasing us, and we had to run! But we tripped over something, and then I don't know what happened! I think maybe I got knocked out, and I think Kayla did, too! But when I woke up, I was okay, but Kayla isn't! I couldn't wake her up! I think she is dead! 00020000063800014CC3632,Melanie starts crying hysterically now. The woman places both hands on Melanie's shoulders in an attempt to calm her. WOMAN All right, try to calm down now, child. I'll go get my cell phone and call 9-1-1. You stay right here, okay? Melanie nods between sobs, and the woman heads back inside her house. Our camera remains on Melanie. The woman returns to the porch. She is holding a cell phone in her hand. WOMAN (CONT'D) Okay, dear, I called 9-1-1. They will be here in a few minutes, and you can show them where your friend is. MELANIE (still sobbing) Thank you, Ma'am. Thank you so much. WOMAN What is your name, dear? MELANIE Melanie, Ma'am. Melanie Mills. WOMAN Do you live around here, Melanie? MELANIE No, Ma'am. I live in town. I just came out here with my friend to get something that belonged to me. Melanie tries to wipe the tears from her eyes with the sleeve of her dirty sweatshirt. We now hear the wail of sirens OFF CAMERA in the background. FADE TO: Int. Hospital room - night. Medium shot - kayla in hospital bed. We see Kayla now. She is in a hospital bed. She has a large bandage taped to her forehead and an oxygen mask over her mouth. Mills, mrs. Mills, seated in living room. Go to pan shot as each one speaks. Mr. Mills and Mrs. Mills are seated on the sofa, across from Melanie, who is seated in a lounge chair. All three look very somber and tense. 0002000006CD000152F56C7,MR. MILLS I just don't know, Melanie, what to do about this. (beat) This is so unlike you. We have always trusted you. MRS. MILLS Yes, and you've never lied to us, or done anything like this before. What's gotten into you? Melanie (almost in tears) I'm sorry, Daddy. I'm sorry, Mom. I feel awful. I'll never do anything like this again. I promise! Melanie starts to cry a bit. MR. MILLS The worse thing is, Melanie ... is your poor friend, Kayla, is laying in a hospital bed in a coma. That could be you. How do you think her poor parents feel tonight? Melanie cries more now. MelaNIE Not good, Daddy. Not good at all. I'm so sorry! MR. MILLS Do you know exactly what a coma is, Melanie? Do you know she could die? Melanie sobs. MELANIE (with cracking voice) Yes, I know, Daddy. She is my best friend in the whole world. She just can't die! She can't! Mrs. Mills rises from the sofa, and steps over with some tissues to Melanie. She hands Melanie the tissues. Melanie wipes her eyes. Mrs. Mills returns to the sofa and sits back down. MR. MILLS Well, you had best get up to bed now. We will discuss this some more after church tomorrow. MELANIE Yes, Daddy. MRS. MILLS And put all those muddy clothes in your hamper, Melanie. I will have to wash them tomorrow. FADE TO: InT.- UPSTAIRS BEDROOM OF MELANIE. Medium shot - melanie in pajamas in bed - later that night. The room is semi-dark. Melanie's hands are clasped in prayer above the bed covers. MELANIE (V.O.) Oh, Grandma, I really messed up today! I went to get my magic stones back from that awful girl who stole them from me, and Kayla went with me. I did some real bad things, Grandma. I lied to Mom and Daddy, and I also broke into a house, which was wrong, I know. 000200000610000159BC60A,(beat) I got the stones back, but poor Kayla is in the hospital now, and Daddy says she could die. She is in a coma, and Mom explained to me what this is, and it's not good at all, Grandma. (beat) The stones came loose when I fell, and even though I got them all back, I'm not sure if they are any good anymore because they came out of the bottle and got all wet and muddy. (beat) I did use one though, Grandma, right before I got into bed. I washed them all off real good, and I wished that Kayla would get well real fast, but like I said, I really don't know if they will work anymore now. (beat) Grandma, if you see God tomorrow, will you please tell Him I am really sorry, and that I won't ever do anything like I did today ever again? Please? And can you ask Him to please make Kayla well again, in case my stones don't work anymore? Thank you, Grandma. FADE IN: Ext. - lINCOLN AVENUE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - day. Medium shot - melanie, tammy and amy, standing outside school. School is about to begin for the day. We see kids around the school, some heading inside, and others hanging around outside, waiting for the bell to sound. TAMMY Wow, Mel, that is some story! Do you think Kayla will get better soon? MELANIE I hope so. I hope so with all my heart. We have to tell Mrs. Kane about what happened, and see if she will let us make cards or something to send to Kayla, okay? AMY That's a great idea, Mel! My Uncle owns a flower shop, and I think maybe he will let us have some flowers free to send, too. I'll ask him after school. 00020000062B00015FC6625,MELANIE Oh, that would be so nice! Thank you, Amy! TAMMY I could get my mom to bake Kayla some cookies, too! Amy and Melanie look at Tammy and roll their eyes. AMY She's in a coma, Tammy. She can't eat anything like that. They have to feed her through a tube, right. Mel? Melanie nods in agreement with Amy's remark. TAMMY Oh ... well, a nurse or someone could put the cookies on her night stand, and then if she wakes up, she would have them to eat. Amy and Melanie just look at Tammy, but say nothing. AMY Were you parents real mad at you, Mel? MELANIE Yes, they were very upset with me. I am grounded for thirty days. I can't even ride my bike or anything, and I have to come right home from school every day. No TV either, and no CD player. AMY Oh, wow, that's too bad, Mel. MELANIE Well, I can't really blame them. I was wrong, and I lied, too. I don't really care about being punished. I just want Kayla to get well! TAMMY Me, too! I miss her already! AMY So do I! Come on, we better get inside to class. The bell is about to ring. Cut TO: - Ext. - lINCOLN AVENUE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - same morning. Two-shot - Karen bradshaw and her friend. I guess I didn't hear you right. Well, what happened to the stones? Karen frowns. KAREN How should I know? They're gone! What more can I tell you? KAREN'S FRIEND You got any idea who took them? Where did you have them? 0002000007B3000165EB7AD,KAREN I had them in a drawer in my room, under some socks. I don't know for sure who took them, but it was probably my father. He sometimes snoops around in my room, going through my stuff. He's creepy like that. KAREN'S FRIEND Hey, do you think those stones were really magic, Karen? I mean, like really? Karen shrugs her shoulders. KAREN Who knows? That's what it said on the bottle. I never got the chance to find out. I'll bet my creepy old man is making wishes with them right now! KAREN'S FRIEND You really think it was him that took them? KAREN Yeah, I do. My Ma never looks in my stuff, and there was no one else in our house the whole weekend. KAREN'S FRIEND Hey, what about that girl from the fourth grade that they found all knocked out in the woods Saturday behind your house? Maybe she took them! Karen frowns again. KAREN Not likely, stupid! She was never in my house, so how could she have? KAREN'S FRIEND Oh, yeah, I didn't think of that. Melanie places a yellow rose on the bed, near Kayla. MELANIE Hi, Kayla. I know you must hate me, and I can't blame you. I wish it was me, instead of you, laying in that bed. My thirty days restriction was up today, so I came over here after school. They aren't supposed to let kids in alone, but the nurse said it would be okay if I don't stay long. She is real nice. I think her name is Abby. I brought you a flower. It's real pretty. I wish you could see it, Kay. It's yellow, your favorite color. 00020000065500016D9864F,(beat) Everyone at school misses you. Mrs. Kane let us make cards and posters for you. They are here in the room, so you can see them when you wake up, okay? Nutty Tammy has been bringing you cookies every few days. Her mom bakes them, and Tammy keeps switching them every few days, Kay, because she says she wants them to be fresh, so you won't get sick when you eat them. She misses you lots, and so does Amy. Amy keeps bringing you flowers from her Uncle's shop. Lots of other people have sent you cards and flowers, too. They all love you and miss you, Kayla! But I think I miss you most of all. Melanie starts to cry. MELANIE (CONT'D) I made a wish with my fifth magic stone for you to get better, but I don't think they work anymore, because they got all muddy and wet that day when we fell in the woods. (beat) I know you don't know anything about my magic stones, but that is why I asked you to show me the way to that Karen's house. I wanted to get my stones back, but now I wish I hadn't. (beat) Well, I had better get home. Lots of homework to do tonight. It's math, too. I remember how much you hate math. I'll try to come back tomorrow or the day after, okay? We see the game, and zoom back and forth between the field of play and the scoreboard. After three of four shots like this, we see less than a minute showing on the score board clock. As the clock runs down now, showing :15, :14, :13 seconds, we see Jason take a pass from a Tiger team mate. He races down the field towards the opponent's goal. Loud cheering now comes from the bleachers (O.C.) and the clock now shows :05, :04, :03 seconds. Jason gives the ball a mighty kick and it goes left of the diving opponent's goalie, and into the net, as the buzzer sounds loudly, ending the game. Jason is mobbed by his team mates and carried off the field. We see Jason atop the shoulders of his team mates now, grinning widely. It is the same day, after the game. JASON MILLS I'm still so excited, I can hardly eat! MR. MILLS Well, don't let that goal go to your head now, son. You have to learn to be a team player. That's what any sport involving more than one player is about. JASON MILLS I know, Daddy. That's what the coach always says, too. MRS. MILLS Good for him. I'm glad you are learning some values while you are playing, sweetie. JASON MILLS Aw, Mom, don't call me 'sweetie'. I'm too old for that. Mrs. Mills smiles. MRS. MILLS Oh, no, you're not! You will always be 'sweetie' to me! JASON MILLS Even when I'm eighteen? MRS. MILLS (still smiling) Even when you're forty! Jason shrugs. His face turns towards Melanie. JASON MILLS Hey, Mel, what did you think of the game today? MELANIE (smiling) I thought it was great! And I thought you were the best player out there, squirt! Jason's face turns red, and he blushes. Everyone laughs. FADE IN: Int.- UPSTAIRS BEDROOM OF MELANIE - night. 00020000072800019FD6722,Medium shot - melanie in bed in her pajamas - semi-dark. Jason's team won their game, and he even scored the winning goal! I threw the sixth stone away, right after the game, liked I'm supposed to. Daddy bought us all take out pizza after the game, and then I read three more poems from the book that Mrs. Kane gave me. There are some wonderful poems in there, Grandma. I'll bet you would like them. (beat) Tomorrow is the last day of school, so we are having a party in our class room. I hope Kayla passes to the fifth grade. I think she will, because she has been working real hard to catch up since she woke up from her coma. (beat) Did you ever get to see God to tell him I was sorry for those bad things I did, Grandma? I hope you did, and I hope He forgave me. Well, I better get to sleep now. I will talk with you again soon, okay? Oh, I know I asked you this before, but do you have TV up there? If so, is it cable or just regular? CUT TO: Int. - Melanie's class room - day. Long shot - showing the kids eating cake and drinking sodas. Lots of noise, as the kids in Melanie's class eat cake, drink soda, and interact with one another, on this final day of school before the summer break. You earned it! Besides, we can't have our school spelling champion stuck in the fourth grade another year, now can we? Sound of laughter from the kids. (O.C.). Then, the bell rings loudly, and the kids begin to file out of the class room. FADE TO: Int.- UPSTAIRS BEDROOM OF MELANIE - night. SUPER - 'FIVE MONTHS LATER'. Medium shot - melanie. Melanie is in bed. Her hands are clasped in prayer atop the bed covers. MELANIE (V.O.) I'm in fifth grade now, Grandma. It is a lot harder than fourth grade was, but I am doing pretty good. We just got our report cards, and I got all A's and B's. Do you have any schools up there? I mean, like for the kids who died real young? Does everyone stay the same age up there? (beat) I still have three stones left, and the time for them to expire is next month, so I have to use them up. I am thinking of making a wish for just me, Grandma. Would that be selfish? I want to meet Madam Xenia, but I am not sure if she is even still alive. If she was a regular person, Grandma, she would be over three hundred years old by now because she buried those stones in our back yard way back in 1705! 0002000006490001ADF6643,(beat) But I don't think she's a regular person. I think she is some sort of witch, but a real good witch though, who maybe lives a lot longer than regular people. What do you think, Grandma? Well, let me know, if you can, okay? I'm going to go to sleep now. I love you and miss you lots! Grandpa, too! Cut TO: InT.- UPSTAIRS BEDROOM OF MELANIE - next MORNING. Medium shot - melanie. Melanie is dressed and ready for school. She takes a stone from the bottle and places it in her skirt pocket. She then screws the cap back on the bottle and lodges it in her school backpack. She closes her eyes tightly. MELANIE (V.O.) Madam Xenia, I wish I could meet you real soon. That is, if you are still alive. Are you? Melanie sighs, then exits the room to head for school. FADE IN: Ext. - Melanie's nEIGHBORHOOD - same morning. Moving shot - melanie and kayla. Melanie and Kayla are walking to school. KAYLA So, how do you like fifth grade so far, Mel? MELANIE It's okay. How about you? KAYLA I like it. I miss Mrs. Kane though. Don't you? MELANIE Yes .. but Mrs. Fisher is nice, don't you think? KAYLA Uh-huh, but she gives more homework than Mrs. Kane ever did. MELANIE Yes, but I think that's because we're in the fifth grade now. There's more stuff to learn now. (beat) I'm sure glad Karen Bradshaw is in middle school now, way across town. KAYLA Me, too! That girl was so nasty! (beat) You know, Mel, you still never told me what was in that precious bottle that we both almost got killed over. MELANIE I know. I promise to tell you by Christmas, okay? Kayla shrugs her shoulders, then sighs. 0002000006650001B43965F,KAYLA Okay. (beat) Hey, there's Tammy and Amy! CuT TO: InT.- UPSTAIRS BEDROOM OF MELANIE - night. Medium shot - Melanie. Melanie is clad in her pajamas. She is in bed, with her hands clasped in prayer over the covers. A big teddy bear is at her side, and Pepper lays on the rug, alongside the bed, asleep. MELANIE (V.O.) Hi, Grandma. I don't think my last wish worked. I wished I could meet Madam Xenia, but so far nothing's happened. Maybe it's too early yet though. I would really like to meet her! (beat) Yesterday was Thanksgiving, and we had a real nice time here. Lots of people were here. Mom and Aunt Becky fixed a big turkey dinner, and I helped a little. Aunt Becky, Uncle Rick, and my cousins were all here, and so was Kayla and her family. We even had two orphan kids here, from the orphanage in Center City, and they were real cute! Their names are Ronnie and Cindy, and they are a lot younger than me, Grandma. Ronnie is seven and Cindy is only six. They really had lots of fun here, and Mom says they might come back for Christmas. I hope they do! Daddy gave them money so they could buy things they need, and so did Uncle Rick and Mr. Forbes. Cindy played with Pepper most of the time, and they got along real good. (beat) Did you and Grandpa have a nice Thanksgiving? What did you have to eat up there? Did you have turkey? Do you have restaurants up there, Grandma, or does everyone just eat at a big dining hall, like our school cafeteria? If it's a dining hall, I hope your food is a lot better than ours at school! What does God and His Family like to eat? Does He like hot fudge sundaes? 0002000006270001BA98621,(beat) Well, tomorrow is Saturday, and Mom is taking me to the mall for new shoes. CUT TO: Int.- UPSTAIRS BEDROOM OF MELANIE - day. Medium shot - melanie. Melanie is seated on the floor, near her bed. Her legs are crossed, and she is brushing Pepper's fur with a grooming brush. Her bedroom door is wide open. There is music playing from her CD player, so she did not hear the doorbell ring a moment earlier. MRS. MILLS (o.C.) (loud, but not shouting) Melanie? Someone is here to visit you, honey. Melanie stops brushing Pepper, and places the brush aside. Pepper runs out of her bedroom, obviously happy the brushing ordeal is over. Melanie rises to her feet. She switches off her CD player. MELANIE (loud, but not shouting) Is it Kayla, Mom? MRS. MILLS (O.C.) No, dear, it's not Kayla. It's a girl named Xenia. Melanie freezes. A look of concern crosses her face. MELANIE (V.O.) She came! She's really here! Oh, my God! MRS. MILLS (O.C.) Melanie, did you hear me? MELANIE (loudly) Uh, yes, Mom. I'll .. I'll be right down, okay? 0002000006620001C0B965C,MRS. MILLS (O.C.) Okay, dear. CUT TO: Moving shot - Melanie. Melanie walks nervously down the stairs, and our MOVING SHOT follows her from a front view. CUT TO: INT. - LIVING ROOM OF MILLS' HOME - DAY. FULL BODY shot - mrs. Mills and Xenia standing, side by side. Mrs. Mills is standing in the living room, alongside of XENIA, awaiting Melanie to come down the stairs. Xenia is about 14 or 15, rather plain looking - not pretty, not homely. She is dressed sort of in Gothic style, with long black hair, a floppy hat on her head, and ear rings that dangle from her ear lobes. Her clothing is dark colored, and she has a gold cross necklace, on a chain, around her neck. Zoom shot - only xenia. We see Xenia, via this ZOOM SHOT, from Melanie's P.O.V., as Melanie finally reaches the bottom stair of the staircase. SLAM CUT TO: Int.- Living room. Medium shot - Mrs. Mills and Xenia. MrS. Melanie smiles rather nervously. MRS. MILLS (CONT'D) Xenia says she left something in the back yard when she moved from here, Melanie, and she is wondering if you perhaps found it. Melanie remains silent, but gazes now at Xenia, who is smiling. MRS. MILLS (CONT'D) Well, I have some things to do, so I will leave you girls to chat. (beat) Why don't you take Xenia up to your room, honey? You two can talk up there more privately. Melanie nods. MELANIE It's nice to meet you, Xenia. Come on, follow me upstairs, and we can talk in my room, okay? 0002000006360001C715630,Xenia nods. Xenia Okay. It's nice to meet you, too, Melanie. CUT TO: Int. - staircase of mills home - DaY. Moving shot - melanie and xenia climbing up the stairs. We see Melanie in front, from a front view, with Xenia behind her. We see that Xenia has a notable limp, and is climbing the stairs only one at time. Once Melanie reaches the top of the stairs, she turns around, and now she notices the limp that Xenia has. MELANIE Oh, I am so sorry. I - I should not have made you climb up these stairs. Xenia smiles awkwardly, as she reaches the top of the staircase. XENIA It's okay. Really, it is. Our MOVING SHOT follows the girls into Melanie's bedroom, and the door shuts to our camera. Cut TO: InT.- UPSTAIRS BEDROOM OF MELANIE - day. Two shot - Melanie and xenia. Melanie is seated on the edge of her bed, with Xenia in a chair, directly across from her. MELANIE You've come about the bottle, haven't you? Xenia grins. XENIA So, you did find it, huh? MELANIE Yes .. a long time ago, way before my father put in the lawn back there. (beat) Actually, it was my dog that found it. He dug it up while we were playing fetch one day. Xenia nods. MELANIE (CONT'D) How did you know my name? How did you know I even lived here? XENIA I don't live that far from here. I have come by here a few times over the past year. A couple of times, I have seen you coming home from school, in the afternoon, and one day there was a boy playing across the street, and I asked him who you were. He told me. Melanie nods. MELANIE That must be Tim Drake. (beat) Are you - - really Madam Xenia? 00020000068B0001CD45685,Xenia laughs heartily. XENIA Sort of. You see, there really is no Madam Xenia, Melanie. I made that up a few years ago when my family and I lived here. I did it just for fun. My older brother had found some really pretty stones one day at the quarry, and he gave them to me. There were ten of them. My father has a computer, so I made that label for the bottle on it. The bottle, by the way, is just an old aspirin bottle that my mom had tossed away once it was empty. I have always been kind of interested in magic, so that is how I came up with the idea for the stones. MELANIE You said there were ten stones, but there were only nine in the bottle when I found it. Xenia smiles. XENIA I know. I used one. (beat) Even though I knew they were not magic stones, I used one anyway. MELANIE (with a hint of excitement in her voice) Can I ask you what you wished for? XENIA Sure. I wished that the next family who lived here, would have a little girl, and that she would find the bottle, and you did! (beat) I had it buried pretty deep in the back yard, or so I thought. Melanie smiles widely. MELANIE (in an excited tone) Well, then, see, it worked, right?! The stones really are magic! Your wish came true, and every wish that I have made so far has come true, too! XENIA How many have you made? MELANIE Seven. I have two left. XENIA Will you tell me what seven wishes you made? MELANIE I guess I could tell you. Melanie sighs, then begins to tell Xenia of her already made seven wishes. Just as she begins to speak, we cut, showing now just Melanie's mouth moving, but no sounds can be heard by the audience. Our camera pulls away from the two girls slowly. 0002000006830001D3CA67D,FADE TO: Int. - kitchen of mills' HOUSE - day. Moving shot - mrs. Mills. We see Mrs. Mills preparing cocoa and cookies. She places them on a tray, then our MOVING SHOT follows her from a front view as she takes the tray upstairs to Melanie's bedroom. She taps on the closed door. MRS. MILLS Melanie, open your door, please? I have some treats for you and your guest. SLAM CUT TO: InT.- UPSTAIRS BEDROOM OF MELANIE - day. Moving shot - melanie and xenia. Xenia turns towards the door when she hears Mrs. Mills tap on it. Melanie rises and heads to the door, but just before she opens it, she looks back at Xenia. MELANIE (just above a loud whisper) So, that is all seven of them. Please don't say anything about the stones to my mom, okay? She doesn't know about them. Xenia nods in the affirmative. Melanie now opens the door, and Mrs. Mills enters with the tray. She sets it down on a small table. MRS. MILLS I've brought up some hot cocoa and cookies for you girls. Do you like cocoa, Xenia? Xenia looks at Mrs. Mills and smiles. XENIA Yes. I like cookies, too. Thank you, Mrs. Mills. Melanie and Xenia each take a cup of cocoa and a cookie. MELANIE Thank you, Mom. Mrs. Mills heads back for the door. MRS. MILLS Well, I hope you girls are having a nice chat. I better get busy with fixing dinner. She smiles, then leaves, closing the door behind her. Xenia sips on the cocoa, then looks at Melanie. XENIA Do you believe in God, Melanie? MELANIE Oh, yes! Very much so! XENIA So do I. From what you have told me, Melanie, about the seven wishes you made, all of which came to be ... well, they could have easily been God's doing. Think about it. 0002000006420001DA4763C,(beat) Maybe God granted your father that promotion because He felt your dad deserved it. And maybe God healed your aunt because she is a good person, and He did not wish her to suffer any longer. (beat) And why wouldn't your friend win that spelling bee? She was obviously a good enough speller to do so. And maybe God saw to it that someone would locate that poor, sick woman's son last Christmas, so that she could have a happy Christmas on His birthday. (beat) As for your best friend, God could have easily pulled her out of that coma. And maybe your little brother scored that winning goal because God felt he had practiced hard enough and deserved it. Even my own wish, that some little girl would find the bottle I buried, was not really magic at all. It was probably just a case of a dog doing what comes naturally to them. Xenia takes another sip of her cocoa, then a bite of a cookie. Melanie does the same. MELANIE What about my seventh wish? I wished I could meet you. XENIA And you have. But it wasn't really magic that brought me here. It was mere curiosity, that's all. Melanie sighs, long and hard. Her face shows she is in deep thought. MELANIE Do you want your bottle back? You can have it, if you want it. Xenia laughs a bit. XENIA No, you keep it. Make your final two wishes and let me know how they turn out, okay? I'll give you my phone number. Xenia takes a pad and pen from her pocket and writes down her phone number, then hands it to Melanie. Melanie smiles. MELANIE Okay. I will do that for sure. (beat) And thank you for coming to visit me, Madam Xenia. 0002000006370001E083631,Xenia laughs. XENIA It's just Xenia, Melanie. Not Madam Xenia. CUT TO: Int. - Living room of mills' home - Day. Two-shot - Melanie and Xenia. Melanie and Xenia are saying good-bye at the front door. Xenia leaves and Melanie shuts the door. Melanie then presses her back to the closed front door and sighs. CUT TO: Int. - kitchen of mills' house - late afternoon. Moving shot - melanie and mrs. Mills. Melanie is helping her mom in the kitchen. She is setting the table for dinner while Mrs. Mills is at the stove, busy cooking. MRS. MILLS Did you and Xenia have a nice chat, sweetie? MELANIE Oh yes, Mom. She's a nice person. MRS. MILLS Too bad about her limp though. I wonder what happened to cause that? Melanie sets down some forks and spoons on the table. MELANIE I don't know, Mom. She didn't say, and I didn't ask. Mrs. Mills adds some spice to the pot on the stove. MRS. MILLS What did she leave here, in the back yard, honey? MELANIE Oh, just an old bottle, with some quarry stones in it. Pepper dug it up a long time ago, before Daddy had the back yard seeded. MRS. MILLS Well, did you give it back to her? MELANIE No. She decided she didn't want it back after all. Mr. Mills enters the kitchen. He smiles. MR. MILLS Well, how are my two favorite girls today? Mrs. Mills turns towards him, smiles, and he kisses her on the cheek. Then, he turns to Melanie, and kisses her on the cheek. MELANIE (smiling ) Hi, Daddy! MR. MILLS Hello, pumpkin. MRS. MILLS Dinner is almost ready, Jack. MR. MILLS Good. I'm starving! FADE TO: Int.- UPSTAIRS BEDROOM OF MELANIE - day. 0002000006570001E6B4651,Medium shot - melanie. Melanie is laying on her bed. She has a telephone receiver in her left hand, pressed to her ear, and a piece of paper in her right hand. We hear the phone ringing on the other end. It rings twice before being answered. XENIA (O.C.) Hello. MELANIE Hello. Is this Xenia? XENIA (O.C.) Yes. Who is this? MELANIE Melanie. XENIA (O.C.) Oh, hi, Melanie. I didn't expect to hear from you so soon. Don't tell me you already made your two final wishes? MELANIE No, not yet. I'm not calling about the stones. I'm calling about something else. XENIA (O.C.) Oh, what? MELANIE Well, uh .. I want to ask you something, and I hope you won't mind. XENIA (O.C.) Oh? What? MELANIE Your limp. Do you mind me asking what is wrong with your leg? XENIA (O.C.) No, I suppose not. It's not my leg actually. It's my hip. I was in a bad car accident with my uncle two years ago and hurt my hip badly. It's beyond repair, the doctors say. MELANIE Oh .. I am so sorry. I really am. XENIA (O.C.) Oh, don't be. It could have been a lot worse. MELANIE Well, I hope it somehow gets better. Long pause. XENIA (O.C.) (slight laugh) Now, don't go making a wish with those silly stones that my hip heals. MELANIE I won't. I do hope though that your hip heals ... somehow. XENIA (O.C.) Thanks, but I doubt that will happen. (beat) Listen, I have to go, but thanks for calling, okay? And I hope you and your family have a real good Christmas season. MELANIE I wish the same for you and your family. 'Bye for now. XENIA (O.C.) 'Bye, Melanie. KAYLA Well, today is the last day of school before Christmas break, Mel. Mrs. Fisher said yesterday we are having a party today, and I think we are going to watch a video, too. MELANIE I know. It should be a pretty fun day, huh? KAYLA Uh-huh. (beat) So, being that it is almost Christmas, are you going to tell me what was in that precious bottle? Melanie sighs. MELANIE Yes. It was nothing really, Kayla. I mean, I thought it was really valuable, but I just found out a few days ago that it's not. KAYLA What do you mean? MELANIE Well, I thought it was full of magic stones, but I found out that the stones are not really magic at all. Do you know what I mean? A puzzled look comes across Kayla's face. KAYLA Not really. You mean your Grandmother gave you a bottle of magic stones, but they turned out to be fake? Melanie sighs long and hard. MELANIE No. Well, sort of. Actually, my Grandmother didn't give me the bottle. I just said that. My dog Pepper found the bottle in our back yard. It had a label on it that read the stones were almost three hundred years old, but it was a fake. It was made up and put there by the girl who used to live in our house. I guess she did it just for fun. (beat) The girl - her name is Xenia - came to my house the other day, and she explained it all to me. I'm sorry for all the pain and sadness it caused you, and your family, too, Kayla. I really am. The girls stop walking now, and Melanie begins to cry a bit. Kayla hugs her to comfort her. 0002000006770001F33C671,KAYLA Hey, it's okay, Mel! Don't worry about it. I forgive you, okay? Melanie sobs some more, then nods her head up and down. She hugs Kayla tightly. MELANIE Thanks, Kayla. You are the best friend in the entire world! Kayla smiles. KAYLA Hey, we better get moving or we're going to be late! CUT TO: Int.- UPSTAIRS BEDROOM OF MELANIE - night. Medium shot - melanie. Melanie is in her pajamas, laying in bed. Her big teddy bear is alongside her, and Pepper is laying asleep on the floor, by her bed. Melanie's hands are clasped in prayer above the bed covers. It is semi-dark in her bedroom. MELANIE Hi, Grandma. It's almost Christmas again. My seventh wish came true. I got to meet Madam Xenia. She came to our house about a week ago, and she told me the stones are not really magic at all, but I am still not sure if they are or aren't. (beat) I made another wish anyway, Grandma. You see, Madam Xenia has a real bad limp when she walks, so I used the eighth stone to wish for her hip to heal so she could walk normal again. I hope it works, but if the stones are not really magic, then I guess it won't, huh? (beat) Do you angels give and receive Christmas presents up there, Grandma, or does everything just go to our Lord because it's His Son's birthday? I kind of think maybe you angels exchange gifts like where Daddy works, and pull a name out of a box, huh? If so, where do you buy the gifts? Do you have malls up there? Mom is taking me to the mall tomorrow, so I can get Daddy a Christmas gift. Jason already went yesterday. (beat) Well, I hope you and Grandpa have a real Merry Christmas, Grandma! MILLS You're right, dear, she isn't. She must have had some surgery done to correct her limp. Well, that's wonderful, isn't it? Melanie smiles brightly. MELANIE It sure is, Mom! It's almost like magic from heaven, isn't it? Mrs. Mills nods and smiles down at Melanie. CUT TO: InT.- UPSTAIRS BEDROOM OF MELANIE - EARLY EVENING. Moving shot - melanie. We then see her take the final stone from the bottle and place that stone in her jeans pocket. She drops the bottle into the wastebasket. She moves now to her mirror, closes her eyes, and sighs. MELANIE (V.O.) Thank You, God, for letting Madam Xenia walk right again. I am going to use my last stone to wish that more people would start believing in You, and I hope You don't mind me doing that. Melanie heads out of her bedroom, and down the staircase. Madam Xenia's hip is healed, but I am pretty sure it was the work of God and not the stones. Am I right, Grandma? (beat) I used my last stone to wish that more people would start believing in God. Did I do the right thing? I wish you could give me some kind of sign, like you did that day long ago with that man in the street, Grandma. Can you? SLAM CUT TO: Ext. - dark sky above melanie - evening. Long shot - shooting star. We see a brilliantly colored shooting star, large and extremely bright, shoot across the sky at a rapid pace. We focus on it until it at last disappears. Cut TO: Ext. - cement step in melanie's back yard - evening. Close up - melanie. MELANIE (V.O.) Thank you, Grandma! Thank you so much! And thank You, too, God! FADE TO BLACK. - The End - CLOSING CREDITS BEGIN TO ROLL.
