A female, KAYA, stands in protest. Kaya But minister, were so close. Another few days-- Sital gazes sternly at her. SITAL We dont have a few days. The fact is that we cant re-create the special chemical balance required for us to access memories from our past lives. Your so-called bodies would strip us of what makes our people who we are. I cant imagine how resourceful our ancestors must have been to survive with so few sources of food. His older sister, ANYA (19), rolls her eyes. Anya Sea life wasnt always so scarce, fishface. Youd know that if you paid attention. Jacobi glares sternly at her. JACOBI Mother told you not to read peoples minds without their permission, remember? He rolls his eyes in exasperation. JACOBI (v.O.) (CONTD) Brat. Thinks that her stupid gift means she can do anything that she wants. Thank the Gods shes the last of her kind and thank the Gods the Choosers have selected her for a lifetime in the Nunnery. Anya glares at him. MastER TIPAR Jacobi! Jacobi starts and turns toward him. He snaps to attention, his gaze wild. MASTER TIPAR (CONTD) Are you paying attention? Jacobi nods vigorously. MASTER TIPAR (CONTD) Then what was the last thing that I said? Jacobis gaze darts from Master Tipar to each of his classmates. JACOBI Uhh-- 00020000055500000CD754F,The other children laugh and Master Tipar rolls his eyes. MASTER TIPAR I dont think Ive ever met a child with such a short attention span as you, Jacobi. Your lack of focus astounds me. Jacobi flushes in embarrassment and his gaze drops to his feet. The left wall, however, is pure paneled glass (windows). The windows overlook other simple buildings built of grey bricks and black roofs. Beyond the buildings are rolling green hills and blue skies. Grey clouds dot the skies. Each student sits at his or her desk with a 3-D graphic representation of a history textbook floating to their left. The text tells the story of the Great War. 00020000064F00001226649,Master Tipar walks among the students, his wooden ruler in hand as he summarizes the text. The students in the front row take notes enthusiastically on electronic pads (EPs). Master tipar The Great War. There is debate among many historians as to what started this war. Some say that a Pleidian freighter captain eloped with the Draconian kings daughter, sparking a feud between our peoples that would last for centuries. Others say the Draconians were conquerors and sought slaves to run their garbage scows. The only thing that historians agree on is that this war resulted in the greatest number of casualties in Pleidian history. Jacobi sits in the far right corner of the classroom, asleep. He snores softly. A young woman sitting next to him digs her elbow into his side. This young woman is MELKESH (17). Jacobi starts awake and glares at her. Melkesh frowns. Jacobis fierce gaze softens and smiles wanly. Melkesh returns the smile. Melkesh (whispers) So did your dad say when youd meet his sunfish of the lunar cycle? Jacobi shrugs. JACOBI He hasnt mentioned anyone since he broke it off with Sitara three lunar cycles ago. Melkesh frowns. Melkesh You dont think hes found someone hes serious about, do you? Jacobi snorts in disbelief. JACOBI The day my father is serious about a woman is the day the world is at an end. Master Tipars lips tighten and he bangs his wooden ruler on Jacobis desk. Jacobi and Melkesh jump in surprise. Master Tipar Since the two of you have so much to discuss, you will join me after class while the three of us discuss the essay you have earned yourselves. 0002000006A00000186F69A,Jacobi groans. Int. TutIS KNOLLS - SHEORAN EDUCATIONAL FACILITY - corridor b[] Jacobi and Melkesh walk through the encasing steel walls of the corridor toward the fifth year dormitories. The atmosphere is drab and somewhat sterile. Jacobi grunts in frustration. JACOBI A 2000 word essay on the Great War? Thatll take me all night! Melkesh rolls her eyes. MeLKESH Dont be so dramatic, Jacobi. It shouldnt take nearly that long. Jacobi grunts. JACOBI Well, at least I wont be the only one. And itll give me the excuse to further research Kayas creation. MeLKESH So you WERE listening. JacOBI Not exactly. I accidentally read the chapter last night and-- MeLKESH Accidentally? How do you accidentally read a chapter? Jacobi flushed. JACOBI So I actually read the EP book sometimes. So what? Anyway, Kayas story sounded familiar so I looked it up. My mother used to tell me bedtime stories about the savior of our people. I didnt make the connection at first--not until I saw her picture. She looked exactly as my mother had described her. Melkesh smirked. MeLKESH You have a crush on her, dont you? Jacobi flushed. JACOBI I--Dont be ridiculous. I merely admire her work. MeLKESH Aw--Dont worry. I wont tell anyone. Jacobis flush deepens. JACOBI Of course you wont. Because theres nothing to tell. I dont have a crush on her. Shes long dead. MeLKESH What does that have to do with anything? Jacobi sighs in frustration JACOBI Just drop it, okay? Jacobi tosses a stack of electronic pads onto the table and flops onto the sofa. His eyes close and he sighs. Melkesh lays her EPs on the table as well. She then turns and strides toward the exit. Jacobi frowns. JACOBI Where are you going? Melkesh To get a snack from the commissary before we start on our essays. Do you want something? Jacobi pauses. JACOBI A bowl of seaweed soup? Melkesh grins and nods. She then exits the room. Jacobi picks up one of the EPs on the table and saves his lesson notes. He then opens up his netface file and chooses search library from the menu of options. Computer Please specify search parameters. JACOBI Kaya Cwardecce-Oolan and the Great War. Computer Searching-- The computer lists several search results on the pad. CoMPUTER (CONTD) Select a result to view its contents. Jacobi selects the first result. COMPUTER (CONTD) Processing-- The file downloads to the EP and opens. Jacobi scans the information. Suddenly, he begins to see references to the stone Kaya was working on. JaCOBI Computer, identify the storage stone created by Kaya Cwardecce-Oolan. Computer The storage stone, better known as the Ashal stone, was capable of storing the past memories of millions. This mechanism saved many Pleidians from the eternal death. 00020000064B0000255E645,JaCOBI Is there anymore information available on Kayas works? COMPUTER Negative? Jacobi pauses. JACOBI Computer, is there anymore information available on the Ashal stone? Computer Legend states that the Ashal stone served as more than just a storage device. It is said that the stone protected the ancient city of Aerydon, former home of the Light Guardians, from the evils of Darkness. A single uttered phrase would leave the city defenseless; thus, the Light Guardians protected it fiercely. JacOBI Is there anymore information available on the Light Guardians? COMPUTER That information is classified. Jacobi scoffed in annoyance. JACOBI Display all information thats available regarding the Ashal stone. The computer beeps and complies. Jacobis brow furrows in concentration as he scans the data. JACOBI (CONTD) (mutters) All-powerful...vengeance... He scrolls down to the next page of the document. The EP beeps several times and flashes the message INFORMATION RESTRICTED. He grunts in frustration and tosses the EP away. At that moment, Melkesh returns. She frowns. MeLKESH Whats wrong? Jacobi starts and turns toward her. He sighs. JACOBI Nothing. MELKESH What couldnt you find? Jacobi grunts in annoyance. JACOBI Just leave it alone. Melkesh rolls her eyes. MeLKESH Well, if youre going to snap at me, Ill do my essay upstairs in my room. Melkesh turns to head up the stairs. Jacobi sighs. JACOBI Wait. Melkesh stops and turns back toward him. JACOBI (CONTD) Im sorry I snapped at you. Melkesh nods and waits. JACOBI (CONTD) I was looking for information on Kayas storage stone. 0002000005F800002BA35F2,MeLKESH Did you find anything? JACOBI The library had some information, but much of it was restricted. Melkesh frowns. MeLKESH Thats peculiar. Its just a myth. There shouldnt be restricted information. Unless- JACOBI Unless its not a myth after all. Maybe someone used the Ashal for something other than reviewing memories of past lives. Maybe something evil. MeLKESH Master Tipar didnt mention anything of that sort in lessons. JACOBI Its possible the information isnt available to faculty of his clearance. Melkesh frowns. MeLKESH Why would such information be restricted? JACOBI Maybe they think the information being available to everyone will result in another incident. MeLKESH How? JACOBI If one person can discover such dark uses for the stone, another person can do so. Melkesh glances warily at the EP, then changes the subject. MeLKESH Here. She hands him a bowl of green mush with bits of white meat. MeLKESH (CONTD) They were out of seaweed soup so I got you eel soup instead. Jacobi nods his thanks and begins to eat. Both eat in silence. Jacobi then sets his empty bowl on the table. Melkesh does the same. Melkesh (CONTD) So... JaCOBI We should probably get started on those papers. Theres no sense in putting it off any longer. MeLKESH Right, then. She picks up two EPs, using one as a source guide and the other for her paper. Jacobis gaze drops to his EP. Out of the corner of his eye he sees Melkesh worrying her lip as she enters a sentence using the key pad and then erases it. He smiles. 0002000005B9000031955B3,He glances down at her foot to see it twitching. He chokes back a laugh. Melkesh hears the sound and turns to him. She frowns. MeLKESH (CONTD) What? JACOBI Your foot. She looks down. Her foot continues to twitch for another moment before it stops. MeLKESH Sorry. She then returns her attention to her EP. Her foot twitches again. Jacobi cant help the snort of laughter that escapes his lips. Melkesh tosses the EP aside in frustration. JACOBI Im sorry, Mellie. I cant help it. MeLKESH How many times have I told you not to call me that? JACOBI 12,143 not including just now. MeLKESH Not funny. You know I hate that name. JACOBI Really? I think its cute. Fits you better. MelKESH Mellie isnt cute. It sounds like the name of an equestrian mammal. Jacobi smirks and leans into her space, inches from her face. JACOBI You think its cute, too. Come on. Admit it. It excites you when I call you that. MELKESH In your dreams, fish boy. JACOBI And what fun dreams they are. Melkesh giggles as Jacobi again leans into her space. MeLKESH Quit it! That tickles! He buries his face in her hair and nuzzles her neck. She giggles louder. MeLKESH (CONTD) Jacobi! Stop it! He removes his face from her hair and their gazes lock. Melkesh falls silent and stares at him. Their faces are inches apart. His gaze drops to her lips. He leans slowly forward and brushes her lips with his. Both jump back. Their eyes widen and surprise etches itself into their features. 0002000006600000374865A,Jacobi hesitates only a moment before he leans forward again and presses his lips to hers. The two kiss for several moments. Their noses collide and their teeth clack in the clumsy attempt at a kiss. They then pull back again. Their breaths come heavily. MeLKESH (CONTD) Did we just...kiss? JaCOBI I think that was the general idea, yeah. MeLKESH Did you feel it, too? That--that--spark? JACOBI Do you--do you want to--again? Melkesh nods and pulls his mouth down to hers. Master Tipar enters a moment later. He holds the door open for someone behind him. Jacobis eyes widen in excitement. His excitement quickly turns to disappointment when he realizes the someone is just ANOTHER STUDENT. His shoulders slump and he frowns. Master Tipar attempts to settle the class and gain their attention. MASTER TIPAR Before the recruiters arrive, Id like to introduce your new classmate, Tiberius. Hes just transferred from the Sandhurst Military Facility. Master Tipar turns to TIBERIUS. MaSTER TIPAR (CONTD) Why dont you tell us a little about yourself? Tiberius While at Sandhurst, I reached the rank of cadet major. I was a member of the drill team as well as the Sandhurst athletic events team. My major focus while at Sandhurst was tactics. 00020000065700003DA2651,Jacobi rolls his eyes and turns to Melkesh. JaCOBI (mutters) Well theres a pretty boy if I ever saw one. Melkesh giggles. Tiberius nods and, to Jacobis surprise, slides into the seat to his left. MastER TIPAR (CONTD) A new student has joined us. Heres the updated list. Master Tipar hands MAN 1 an EP. He then turns to the class. MASTER TIPAR (CONTD) I suppose Ill hand things over to the recruiters. Theyll give instructions for how the process will work. The tallest man nods and takes his place at the center of the room. Man 1 All of you are Im sure aware that we travel to educational facilities across the region to recruit potential Guardians. That is the purpose for our visit. But not every child will become a Guardian. We test potential candidates in two ways. The first of which is an interview. This is designed to test your temperament and reactions. The second is a written personality analysis, which will place you in a category based on your responses. The third and final stage will be a written response to a given situation. This will analyze your leadership abilities. We will notify the selected candidates over the next few days. Many will not make it through training. Only the best will remain behind to join the ranks of the Light Guardians. 0002000006AA000043F36A4,MAN 2 steps forward and his gaze slides over the group of students. Man 2 Becoming a Guardian is not something to be taken lightly. Once you are selected, you serve until death. You will not see your families for years at a time, if at all, and your friends could easily become you enemies. If you do not wish to endure such hardships, leave now. Several girls and a couple of boys stand and leave. They dont look back. The rest remain seated. Man 2 (CONTD) Very well. Man 2 looks down at the EP in his hand, which contains a list of names. Man 2 (CONTD) Will the following candidates please stand: Abhaya, Jacobi, Anik, Kiraat, Tiberius, and Melkesh. Abhaya, a young woman; Jacobi; Anik, a young man; Kiraat, another young man; Tiberius; and Melkesh stand as their names are called. Man 2 (CONTD) Excellent. Now if youll follow us please, well begin. He reaches over and opens the message, then reads it. MeLKESH Whos it from? Jacobi frowns. JacOBI My father. Theres someone he wants me to meet. Jacobi shakes his head. JACOBI (CONTD) Its probably just an old friend who has a marriageable daughter. Melkesh pouts. Jacobi smirks. JACOBI (CONTD) (whispers) Well, it's about time that he met my intended. Melkeshs eyes widen. Jacobi grins and reaches into his pocket. JACOBI (CONTD) Of course, to convince him, you'll need a token on a certain finger. He pulls out a ring. It's ancient and rather gaudy. Melkesh stares at him in surprise. JaCOBI (CONTD) Melkesh of Aerydon, I choose you as my lifemate and promise to be forever faithful and to love you until the day my last breath leaves my body. JACOBI Why not tell me when you were married? Why wait until now? Jacoran frowns. JACoRAN I feared that you would make up your mind about her before you met her. Jacobi snorts and scowls. JACOBI Youve never cared what I thought of your consorts. You leave them after a month and seek another to entertain you. Maliha pales and her eyes widen. Jacoran turns to her and shakes his head. He grasps her hand comfortingly. He then turns to Jacobi. His lips tighten and his eyes narrow in anger. JACorAN Still your tongue. I am your father and you will treat me with the respect that comes with that title--and I will not allow you to insult my wife in such a manner. Jacobis scowl disappears and his brow furrows. Jacobi stares in stunned amazement. He then bows his head and lowers his gaze to his hands. JACOBI Please, forgive me. The news is--surprising. He looks up and turns toward Maliha. If she and I are invited to train as Guardians, we will need to wait until after our training. TIBerIUS IF youre even invited. Everyone turns. Tiberius sits with his arms crossed and his expression sour. Jacoran frowns. JacoraN Dont be ridiculous. Of course theyll be. They have the greatest potential of all their classmates. Even Master Tipar says so. Tiberius scowls and stands quickly. He storms angrily toward Jacobis bedroom and slams the door closed behind him. Maliha sighs. Maliha Give him time. Hell calm down. JACOBI Do you think you could NOT lock me out of my own room? Tiberius sighs and turns toward him. TIBeRIUS Sorry. He turns away again. A long silence fills the room before Jacobi speaks again. JACOBI I think you and I need to have a talk--lay down some ground rules. 00020000096A0000681B964,Tiberius sighs again and sits up. TIBERIUS All right. Like what? Jacobi pauses. JACOBI Well, I guess no locking each other out is a good start. Tiberius nods. Jacobi pauses. JACOBI (CONTD) Look, we got off on the wrong foot. Were brothers now, so we might as well at least TRY to get along. TIBERIUS For our parents. Jacobi nods. JACOBI For our parents. Jacobi extends a hand and Tiberius grips it. TiberIUS What happened to your mom? Did your parents split up or something? Jacobis gaze drops to his hands. JACOBI She was killed on a research mission. The pilot of the seapod took it too deep and the pressure crushed the vessel and everyone inside of it. They never recovered the bodies. Tiberius gapes. TIBERIUS Im sorry. Jacobi pauses. JACOBI What happened to your dad? Tiberius grins wryly. TibeRIUS He left when I was seven. He called my mom a power-hungry whore and said he wanted no part of it. Jacobi frowns. JACOBI Is that why she married my dad? For power? Tiberius shrugs. TIBERIUS She helps manage the Guardians archives so she doesnt exactly need power. Jacobis brow furrows in thought. JACOBI Does she have access to information regarding Kaya Cwardecce-Oolan and the Ashal stone? Tiberius nods. TibeRIUS I believe so. Why? JACOBI I was hoping to learn a little more about her research. Jacobi pauses. JACOBI (CONTD) Do you know your mothers access code? TIBerIUS Yes, but it takes more than a code. It also takes a card and a thumbprint. (mumbles) Believe me. Ive tried. JACOBI A thumbprint is easy enough to fake if you can find something solid that theyve touched--like a hairbrush or a plate. Tiberiuss brows furrow. TIBERIUS Youre not actually contemplating breaking into the Central Archives just to satisfy your curiosity, are you? Jacobi nods. JACOBI Ive tried to hack into the archives from an EP, but Ive been unsuccessful. Tiberius pauses. TIBeRIUS Well, youll need my help. The shortest way there is through the access vents--the shortest way without being caught, anyway. Jacobi nods. JACOBI Well need to do it late at night after our parents go to sleep. Well need to make a copy of her thumbprint first and youll need to sneak into their room to take her card. At that moment, the automatic doors open and Melkesh enters the room wearing a frown. MeLKESH What are the two of you up to? TiberIUS Nothing. Jacobi pauses and then motions her closer. 0002000006950000717F68F,JACOBI (whispers) Were going to break into the Central Archives. Melkesh gapes at them. MelkeSH Are you insane? Youll be banished from the city! JACOBI Shh! Keep your voice down! Melkesh stares at him, her expression worried. MeLKESH This was your idea, wasnt it? Youre breaking in to find out more about the Ashal. Jacobi grasps her hands. JACOBI Were going to need your help, Melkesh. She pulls her hands away and shakes her head. MELKESH No. I want no part of this foolishness. She turns to leave the room. Jacobi lunges forward and grabs her arm. She turns toward him. JACOBI Please, Melkesh. I need you. InT. citY OF AERYDON - FIRST COUNCILMAN JACORANS QUARTERS - jacobis Room.[] Tiberius drops the brush on Jacobis bed and throws himself onto the other bed and sighs. TIBeRIUS I tried not to touch the handle. Jacobi nods and pulls out a small container of white fingerprint powder from the keepsake box on his bed. He opens the container and sprinkles it lightly onto the handle and paddle of the brush. Partials of fingerprints begin to appear. 0002000006260000780E620,Jacobi then pulls out a powder brush and removes excess powder. The most complete print is on the back of the paddle. Jacobi then pulls a small clump of a putty-like substance from a larger clump. TiberIUS (CONTD) Youll need gloves so that your print doesnt get meshed with hers. Jacobi slips on a pair of latex gloves and presses the putty down hard over the print. Melkesh sits down on the edge of the bed near Tiberius and studies an EP with the access vent blueprints. MelKESH This shouldnt be too difficult. The vents are rather large so we should each be able to crawl through them. Our path is a different matter entirely. The system is extremely complicated. One wrong turn and well be hopelessly lost. Tiberius frowns. TibeRIUS Were you able to work out a route or not? Melkesh glares at him. MELKESH Of course. Do I look useless? Tiberius scowls and opens his mouth to reply. JaCOBI Enough, you two. Jacobi turns to Melkesh. JaCOBI (CONTD) How long will it take to get to the Central Archives from here? Melkesh worries her lower lip. MeLKESH 10 minutes. Maybe 15. Jacobi grins wryly. JACOBI So probably another 15 to get into the archive and another 10 or 15 to get back. Thats a long time. If either my dad or Maliha wake up and come in to check on us, were had. MelKESH I dont think we need to worry about that. Melkesh smirks. Jacobis eyes widen. JACOBI You didnt. MeLKESH Dont worry. The jasmine I slipped into their tea isnt harmful. It simply ensures sound sleep. My mother used to give it to me after I had a nightmare. Jacobi grimaces. 0002000005B700007E2E5B1,JACOBI But my dad hates it. It gives him horrible headaches. Melkesh shrugs. MELKESH The point is that neither of them will wake up for at least six hours no matter what. INT. ciTY OF AERYDON - FIRST COUNCILMAN JACORANS QUARTERS - Jacobis room - later[] Tiberius slips the card into his pocket. TiberIUS Are you sure you want to do this tonight, Jacobi? Jacobi nods. JACOBI Im sure. The sooner I get the information, the sooner we can find out what they have to hide. Tiberius inclines his head and moves beneath the removable ceiling panel. Jacobi slips the putty piece into a small plastic bag and drops it, along with a pair of gloves, into the small backpack Melkesh wears. Tiberius weaves his fingers together to serve as a foothold for Jacobi. Jacobi then moves toward Tiberius and places his hands on Tiberiuss shoulders for support. He lifts his foot into Tiberiuss hands and pushes off with his other foot. Tiberius grabs each ankle and holds Jacobi up while he pushes the removable ceiling panel aside. Jacobi grips the edges of the access vent and pulls himself the rest of the way up. Tiberius does the same for Melkesh and Jacobi helps to pull her up. Jacobi lays down on his stomach and extends his arms as far downward as they will reach. Tiberius jumps and grabs both of Jacobis hands. Jacobi grits his teeth and struggles to pull Tiberius up. Melkesh extends a hand and Tiberius lets go of one of Jacobis and quickly grabs hers. 00020000056D000083DF567,Both pull him up. The three collapse and gasp for breath. Tiberius reaches over the gap and replaces the ceiling panel. JACOBI (CONTD) Which way, Melkesh? She points ahead of them. MeLKESH That way. The three crawl in the direction shes pointed. Int. CitY OF AERYDON - access vents - later Melkesh stops at a junction. She looks left and then right. MeLKESH Left. Tiberius frowns. TibeRIUS Are you sure? Melkesh rolls her eyes. MeLKESH Of course. MeLKESH It should be here. Tiberiuss brows furrow. TiberIUS It either is or isnt here. Melkesh turns and glares at him. MELKESH All youve done is criticize me. Id like to see you do any better. JaCOBI Enough! He turns to Melkesh. JACOBI (CONTD) Scoot past the panel and then lift it. Ill check to see where we are. Melkesh nods and scoots past the panel, then lifts it. Jacobi leans forward and pokes his head out. He sighs in relief. Theyre right outside the Central Archives. JACOBI (CONTD) Okay. This is it. Melkesh, get the rope. Melkesh searches her bag and pulls a thick rope out, then hands it to Jacobi. Jacobi ties one end around his waist and throws the other end to Melkesh. MeLKESH How am I supposed to warn you? 00020000064700008946641,JACOBI Knock on the sides of the vents. Well hear it. Melkesh removes the gloves, the plastic bag containing the putty print, and the card from the bag and hands them to Jacobi. Jacobi slips the card into his pocket and puts the gloves on. He grabs the small plastic bag with the putty print and slips it into the front of his tunic. He slides the latex gloves on. He grips the edge of the vent and drops down. He lets go and Melkesh slowly lowers him to the ground. Jacobi removes the card from his pocket and slides it through the card reader, then enters the code. For a few moments, nothing happens. Jacobis eyes widen. A moment later, the light on the reader changes from red to yellow. Jacobi sighs in relief and then removes the putty print from the bag and molds it to his thumb carefully so as not to distort the print. He presses his thumb carefully to the panel and waits. The computer takes a long time to scan the print. A few moments later, the light changes from yellow to green. Jacobi quickly unties the rope and tugs on it. Melkesh pulls the rope up quickly and a moment later, Tiberius is being lowered to the ground. Jacobi presses the door button and the doors slide open. Tiberius is on the ground. He unties the rope quickly and tugs. Melkesh pulls the rope back up and the two slip inside the Archive room. Int. CitY OF AERYDON - central archives - continuous The doors open and Jacobi and Tiberius enter the room. The room is dark, large, and filled with computer consoles. Tiberius steps up to one of the consoles and enters a series of commands. The lights hum to life. 00020000060E00008F87608,Jacobi pauses. JACOBI Which one of these consoles will allow me to access information on the Ashal? Tiberiuss brows furrow. TiberIUS Any one of these consoles should be sufficient. Jacobis brows furrow. JACOBI Then why are there so many consoles? TibeRIUS It allows, for example, two people to enter new data into the system while two others check the facts and references of the data being entered. This allows for maximum archival accuracy. Jacobi nods. Tiberius frowns. TibeRIUS (CONTD) My mothers access number and passcode shouldnt raise any alarms--if I can remember her passcode. Jacobis brows furrow. JACOBI You mean you cant remember? Tiberius grunts in frustration. TIBERIUS They change it every couple of weeks, all right? Its difficult to keep track of it. Jacobi pauses. JACOBI And what happens if you enter the wrong passcode? TIBERIUS Itll set off alarms throughout the city. Jacobi rolls his eyes. JACOBI Great. Tiberius worries the inside of his cheek. TibeRIUS But not until the third attempt. He frowns. TIBeRIUS (CONTD) She used my birthday last time. Tiberius keys in the numbers and a message pops up that reads access denied. Tiberius grimaces. TibeRIUS (CONTD) Maybe she used her birthday. He keys in the numbers and another message pops up that reads access denied. Jacobi buries his face in his hands. Tiberiuss lips tighten. TIBERIUS (CONTD) Her and Jacorans wedding date. He keys in the numbers and draws in a sharp breath. A third message pops up. This time, the message reads access granted. 0002000006950000958F68F,Both sigh in relief and Jacobi reaches into his pocket for an EP and sets it on the console beside him. He then enters a series of commands that begin a search for all information on the Ashal. Jacobi finds the link he wants and creates a wireless download to the EP. The screen opens a progress bar, which reads 13 percent complete. The bar continues to progress. TibeRIUS (CONTD) Whats so interesting about this Ashal stone that you were willing to break into the Central Archives to find more information on it? Jacobi pauses. JACOBI Youve heard the stories. Tiberius nods. JACOBI (CONTD) I was assigned a paper four weeks ago and decided to do more research on Kayas projects. When I was reading what little was available to me, I came across a reference to the Ashal stone, which suggested that the stone was more than a storage device. It implied that someone had used the stone to control their enemies. Tiberius frowns. TIBeRIUS Isnt that just a myth? JACOBI If it was, then why would they hide the details behind the myth? Jacobi pauses. JACOBI (CONTD) Can you imagine what that kind of power can get you? Jacobi glances at the EP. The download is complete. TiberIUS Hey, send a copy of that to my netmail. I want to look it over. Jacobi nods and composes a message to Tiberiuss address and attaches the file, then sends it. Its then that they hear a loud bang. A moment later, the doors part to reveal FOUR SECURITY GUARDS. ONE of THE GUARDS has a tight grip on Melkeshs arm. Melkesh flushes. MeLKESH I tried banging around in the vents to warn you, but they heard me. A SECOND GUARD steps forward and takes the EP from Jacobi, then clears its contents. 00020000070800009C1E702,JACOBI Hey! The second guard glares at him. Second guard Youll be lucky if YOU dont get wiped. Jacobi grimaces and folds his arms across his chest. Two guards grab each Jacobi and Tiberiuss arms. The two boys try to struggle, but the guards grips are too strong. The guards lead the boys from the room. Int. city of aerydon - FIRST COUNCILMAN JACORANS QUARTERS - living area - later Tiberius, Melkesh, and Jacobi sit on the couch. Maliha sits on the couch in front of them. Im very disappointed in you, Jacobi. Jacobis lips tighten. JACOBI No surprises there. When are you not disappointed in me? When do I not fail you in some way? Jacorans eyes narrow. JACORAN Dont get smart with me, young man! I have half a mind to withdraw your Guardian application from consideration. JACOBI You cant do that! Jacoran arches an eyebrow. JACORAN Cant I? Im the head of the City Council, after all. Jacorans brows furrow. JACorAN (CONTD) If it werent for the Guardian Council already having selected you, Tiberius, and Melkesh as three of the potential candidates, I would ask the council to deny your application. Jacobi, Tiberius, and Melkesh gape. JaCOBI Theyve made a decision already? They told us it would take a couple of weeks! Jacoran grins wryly. JACOraN Thats what they want you to think. The decision, in truth, takes only a day. They simply wish to give you time to prepare to accept your role should you be selected. The decision this time, however, took the least time on record. Within a matter of several hours, the Guardian council was certain that the three of you would make excellent Guardians. 00020000063B0000A320635,Jacobi pauses. JACOBI You have to admit, the way we broke into the Central Archives was brilliant. The corners of Jacorans lips turn up slightly. The smile becomes a frown. JACOran To your room, all three of you. Jacobi resists the urge to smile. Malihas brows furrow. Maliha Well, you heard him. Go! The three hurry off to Jacobis room. They enter and the doors slide closed behind them. Maliha stands and wraps her arms around Jacorans waist. MalIHA (CONTD) Its all right to be proud of him for one thing and ashamed of him for another, you know. Jacoran grins wryly. Melkesh blushes. Tiberius nods his agreement. TiberIUS Jacoran knew youd both be picked. Jacobi grins. Melkesh arches an eyebrow. MeLKESH I thought you two hated one another? TiberIUS Would I really have helped the louse break in the Central Archives if I hated him? I would have sent him on his way then made sure the guards knew where he was. I wouldn't have gone with him! Jacobi pauses. JaCOBI How DID they know where we were? Tiberius frowns. TIBERIUS They were probably able to trace our attempts to break into the system. 0002000005FF0000A9555F9,Jacobis brows furrow. JACOBI I thought you said it wouldnt set off any alarms until a failed third attempt? Tiberius nods. TibeRIUS Yes, but that doesnt mean someone wasnt monitoring the computers. JACOBI You DID set us up! Tiberiuss lips tighten in anger and he opens his mouth to reply. MeLKESH Whats done is done. Arguing over how we were caught wont change the fact that we were caught. Tiberius sighs. Tiberius Just so you both know, I didnt set you up. Do you think Im stupid enough to get myself caught? Melkesh and Jacobi exchange a glance and shake their heads. She glances at his bag and her grin widens. MeLKESH (CONTD) Whatd you do? Pack your entire EP book collection? Jacobi blushes. JaCOBI Only my favorites. Melkesh laughs. MeLKESH Well, you may wish to narrow it down further. You dont want to have to carry that bag the great distance to the training camp. Jacobi grunts. JACOBI Thats what my father said. MeLKESH In this case, I completely agree. 00020000064A0000AF4E644,Jacobi unzips the bag and removes 20 EPs. He glances at the contents of each and places his three favorites in the bag and zips it. JACOBI Better? Melkesh smiles and nods. MELKESH Much. Jacobi glances at the stack of EPs on his bed. It is 0842 hours. His eyes widen and he slings the duffel over his shoulder. At last, they are lined up. Jacobi, Melkesh, and Tiberius stand next to one another. An attractive dark-haired, blue-eyed girl joins them and wraps an arm around Tiberiuss waist and smiles flirtily. I would have given it to you in the transport, but I didnt want to take the risk of your father seeing it. Jacobi takes the EP and nods his thanks. He then begins scanning the contents. Meanwhile, Melkesh and Kalika discuss what challenges they think lie ahead. Kalika My older brother was a recruit. He said the sorceresses kill animals for practice. Melkesh pales. TiberIUS I thought you said your brother told you he was joking. Kalika glares at him. KaliKA I said nothing of the kind. Tiberius leans down and whispers in Melkeshs ear. TIbeRIUS Dont worry. She lies a lot. It gets her attention, which is what she wants. Melkesh relaxes. She glances over at Jacobi. He throws the bag over his shoulder and carries it with one hand. He twines the fingers of his other hand with Melkeshs. The four walk in silence. EXT. FOREST OF TASHEE - LATER The group halts at a fork in the path, which branches off in opposite directions. Man 1 Recruits bound for camp one will follow me. Man 2 Recruits bound for camp two will follow me. The group splits up and each follows their camp leaders. Tiberius and Kalika follow, holding hands. Jacobi and Melkesh stay behind. Jacobi grabs her hands and squeezes them tightly. His gaze locks with hers. She worries her lower lip and fights back tears. MelkESH I guess this is it. Jacobi shakes his head. JacoBI Well only be apart for a little while. I promise Ill find a way to get to you. MelKESH Soon? Jacobi grins and nods. JacOBI Soon. I promise. Tiberius (o.s.) Melkesh! Hurry! Youll fall behind! Melkesh turns in the direction of the voice then turns back to Jacobi. MelKESH Ill be waiting. She then turns and runs to catch up with Tiberius and Kalika. Jacobi stares after her for a few moments then hurries to catch up with his camp leader. EXT. TRAINING CAMP TWO - lATER The recruits arrive at the camp. A couple dozen huts surround a community camp fire. Above the door of each hut is a symbol. This symbol is a Hindi number. The recruits form a line in front of man 2. Man 2 Congratulations. You will each be the only occupant of your hut. Bina, hut ek; Jacobi, hut do; Lakshya, hut teen; and Sirisha, hut char. 0002000006B40000C70B6AE,All of the recruits nod and move toward their assigned huts. Man 2 (CONTD) Lights out at sunset. Man 2 Now that the new arrivals are well rested, you will divided into two groups: warriors and sorcerors. Warriors will be trained in hand-to-hand combat as well as weaponry. Sorcerors will learn to focus and strengthen their magic. Sorcerors will stand to my left and warriors to my right. Following this division, everyone will line up in front of the campfire to receive their lunch. 0002000005C90000CDB95C3,Man 2 pulls an EP from his pocket and glances at the contents. As Man 2 calls out their names, each moves to either his left or right. Man 2 (CONTD) Bina, sorceress... Jacobi glances around at his surroundings for several moments. The man continues calling other names. The first recruit moves left, the second recruit moves right, the third recruit moves left, etc. Jacobi hears his name. Jacobi, sorceror... Man 2 turns to face the two groups. Man 2 (CONTD) Dismissed! The groups break and then form a line in front of the campfire. On the fire sits a large cauldron. A woman reaches for a bowl from the stack beside her, pours the soup into the bowl, drops in a piece of bread, then hands it to the first person. She repeats this process until everyone has been served. Jacobi sits cross-legged in front of his hut and uses the wall to lean against. He stares down into the bowl and removes the piece of soggy bread with his thumb and index finger. He grimaces. JacoBI They call this food? Hina, a tall blond with blue eyes, sits down next to him. Jacobi turns toward her. Hina Its not much, but eat it. It will keep you strong. Jacobi pauses and his nose wrinkles in disgust as he takes bite after bite of the soggy bread. He then lifts the bowl to his lips and tips it. He makes a disgusted face as the broth hits his tongue, but swallows all of it gulp after gulp. He shudders at the aftertaste and sets the bowl aside, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. 000200000E7E0000D37CE78,Hina (CONTD) You see. Its not so bad. HINA (CONTD) Im Hina. He gives them several moments to separate. Man 1 (CONTD) Warriors are to follow me and sorcerers and sorceresses are to follow Guru Drona. The sorcerers and sorceresses line up in front of GURU DRONA, who then leads them away from the camp to a secluded spot in the woods. Ext. TrainING CAMP TWO - simULTANEOUSLY Jacobi and the others of his group arrive at a secluded spot in the woods. GURU OJAH, a short and stout man stands on a tree stump to get their attention. Guru ojah As per tradition, your first lesson will be in the art of levitation. You will learn to levitate objects such as tree leaves and branches. I will demonstrate. Guru Ojah sets a stick on the tree stump and strides several feet away. He then stops and turns to face the stump. He faces an open palm toward the stump and closes his eyes. Guru ojah (CONTD) Levo. The stick ascends and dances end upon end through the air. The recruits stare, awed. His eyes open and the stick falls to the ground. GurU OJAH (CONTD) Get it? Got it? Good. Jacobi, why dont you go first. Jacobi exchanges a glance with the two people beside him and steps forward. He stands several feet away from the stump and Guru Ojah places a single leaf on the stump. Jacobi sighs, then faces an open palm toward the tree leaf on the stump and closes his eyes. JaCOBI Levo. The leaf ascends as though blown by a wind. Jacobis eyes open. The leaf floats to the ground. Guru Ojah smiles. GURU OJAH Well done, Jacobi! And on the first attempt! Excellent. Cut TO: Ext. TraiNING CAMP ONE - siMULTANEOUSLY Melkesh opens her eyes. The leave hasnt moved from the tree stump. His brows furrow and he gasps in surprise as his feet are taken out from under him. He lands hard on his backside and the staff flies from his hands, leaving him at his opponents mercy. 0002000006250000E1F461F,He clasps his hands and bows. TibeRIUS The victory is yours, my friend. He then stands and rushes toward Melkeshs hut. Int. TraINING CAMP one - hut teen - later Tiberius opens the door to find Melkesh curled into a ball in the corner. He moves to comfort her. She shrinks away from him. He lays a hand on her shoulder. She shrugs his hands off. Tiberius steps away and waits patiently. Melkesh calms and turns toward him. MeLKESH What do you want? TIBerIUS I came to make sure you were okay. But Ill leave since you obviously dont want me here. He turns to leave. MeLKESH Wait. Melkesh sighs. MeLKESH (CONTD) Im sorry. All of this is just so frustrating. Tiberius grins. TibeRIUS I just got knocked on my backside. Hell yeah, its frustrating. But you cant give up because you dont get it on the first try. Melkesh smiles. MelKESH Yeah. I guess not. Ext. Training camp one - Later Kalika sees Tiberius emerge from Melkeshs hut and her eyes narrow. She strides quickly toward him and grabs his arm. He turns abruptly. Kalika Why were you in her hut? Tiberius jerks his arm from her grip. TibeRIUS She had a rough day and needed a shoulder. Thats all. KalIKA That better be all. Tiberius frowns and then strides toward his own hut. Ext. Training camp two - later As the sun sets, Jacobi sits leaned back against the outside wall of his hut and sips his soup. Hina sits down beside him with her soup, as does a dark-haired boy. Jacobi smiles. JacOBI Hello, Hina. Hina smiles. HinA Hello, Jacobi. May I introduce my brother, Roshan? Jacobi inclines his head. 00020000061D0000E813617,JACOBI A pleasure to meet you. Harish inclines his head. Roshan And you. Jacobi turns to Hina. JACOBI So how was your first day? Hina smiles. Hina Most excellent. I was able to successfully defeat many of my group. How was your first lesson? Jacobi grins. JACOBI It was amazing! By the end of the lesson, I was able to levitate a pile of sticks. Hina Well done. Hina smiles. JacoBI Do you anticipate similar success tomorrow? Hina nods and smiles confidently. HINA I do. Roshan grunts. Roshan I can only hope that my skill improves. Jacobi and Hina exchange a wide grin. Ext training camp two - hut do - later Jacobi lies down in his hammock and pulls out the EP, then reads its contents. When he moves to the next page of the document, he finds a map. He studies it and discovers that its a map directing him to camp one. He grins and praises Tiberiuss resourcefulness. Ext. Training camp two - continuous Jacobi opens the door to his hut and checks to see if anyone is still awake. Its clear. He creeps from his hut and closes the door gently, then follows the map. Int. Training camp one - hut teen - later The bushes outside rustle and Melkeshs eyes snap open. Soft footsteps grow closer and then her hut door creaks open. She jumps from the hammock. MelKESH Levos. Instead of being lifted from the ground, Jacobi flies into the hut wall. He grunts. JaCOBI What was that for? Her eyes widen in horror and she runs toward him and drops to her knees beside him. MelKESH Im so sorry! I didnt know it was you. Are you all right? Jacobi nods and grins. 000200000BF10000EE2ABEB,JaCOBI Im fine. But that levitation spell of yours could use a bit of work. MeLKESH I take it you were successful with yours? JACOBI It was brilliant, Mellie! I got it on the first try! Melkesh smiles wanly. MeLKESH Thats wonderful, Jacobi. JACOBI Im surprised that you didnt catch on right away. Youre brilliant. I expected that youd succeed before me. Melkesh sits and sighs. MeLKESH Guru Dronas said that I need to open my mind to the impossible--that I cant do magic because I wont acknowledge that I can do magic. Melkesh checks him for wounds and she sees none. The two stand and exit the hut, then sneak off into the woods. Ext. Forest of tashee - later The two find a clearing halfway between camp one and camp two. Jacobi grabs her hands and grins. JACOBI What do you say we meet here every other night after the sun sets? MelKESH That sounds wonderful. The two make a bed of pine needles and lie down on it. He smiles and brushes a few stray hairs away from her face. JACOBI Youre beautiful, you know. She smiles shyly. JaCOBI (CONTD) You are. And youre brilliant. You can do anything in the world, love. I believe in you. Tears of happiness fill her eyes. MelkESH Mmm. I love you. Jacobi smiles tenderly and pecks her on the lips. He strokes her cheek with his thumb. JACOBI I love you, too, Mellie. With all my heart. She lays her head on his chest, closes her eyes, and sighs. They lie together until the sun begins to rise. They then stand and move toward their separate camps. They glance back every so often and smile at one another until they can no longer see one another. Ext. Training camp two - hut teen - morning Melkeshs eyes open and she yawns and stretches her arms. She grins contentedly as the longhorn echoes throughout the camp. She exits her hut. Ext. Training camp two - continuous Melkesh joins the other sorcerers and sorceresses. Ext. Guru ojah (CONTD) Adveho. The stick flies toward him and he catches it. He opens his eyes. GURU OJAH (CONTD) Get it? Got it? Good. Jacobi, since you did such an excellent job yesterday, why dont you step forward and show us how its done? Jacobi grins and inclines his head. He steps forward. He stands several feet away from the stump and Guru Ojah places a single leaf on the stump. Jacobi sighs, then faces an open palm toward the tree leaf on the stump and closes his eyes. JaCOBI Adveho. The stick flies toward him and he catches it. He opens his eyes. His group cheers. GurU OJAH Once again, very well done. Very well done. Ext. Training camp one - simULTANEOUSLY Melkesh opens her eyes and the stick falls to the ground. Guru drona Good attempt, dear, but dont open your eyes until you feel the stick in your hand. Melkesh nods. 0002000005C60000FA155C0,She faces her palms toward the stick again and closes her eyes. MeLKESH Adveho. The stick flies toward her and she catches it and her group cheers loudly. She opens her eyes and grins widely. GURU OJAH Excellent, Melkesh! Much improved. Melkesh smiles proudly and moves to rejoin her group while another recruit steps forward. Several of her group praise her. She smiles shyly and accepts their praise. INT. TRAINING CAMP TWO - LATER Jacobi lies in his hammock and reads as he waits for the moon to rise. At last, the sun sets and he sneaks from his hut and into the woods. Ext. Forest of tashee - later Jacobi arrives in the clearing to find Melkesh waiting for him. He approaches her and kisses her. He then whispers into her ear. JACOBI I missed you. MeLKESH Mmm. I missed you, too. He kisses her again. Ext. Forest of tashee - later Jacobi and Melkesh lie holding one another while Jacobi strokes his fingers through her hair. MelkeSH ...and got it on my second try! Jacobi See? I told you that you could do it. He turns and presses a kiss to her forehead. He sighs. MelKESH Have you had any luck uncovering the Ashals location? JACOBI The text is written in riddles. I cant make sense of it. MeLKESH Bring the EP with you tomorrow, then, and I will see if I cant decode it. Ext. ForEST OF TASHEE- The next night... TITLE: The next night... Melkeshs brows furrow as she reads the EPs contents. JACOBI Can you decode it? MeLKESH Yes, but I need more time. JACOBI 00020000067D0000FFD5677,How long? MelKESH At least a week. Jacobi grimaces in frustration. JACOBI We shall meet here again in a week, then, so that you may have as much time each day as you need. He stands and walks back toward his training camp. Melkesh watches him go. A pained expression crosses her face as she fights tears. Ext. Training camp one - the next day... Tiberius lifts two pails of water and moves toward his hut. He frowns when he sees Melkesh move toward her hut with tears sliding down her cheeks. Hes so distracted that he nearly trips over a large stone. He maintains his balance and sets the pails down, then moves toward her hut. Int. training camp one - hut teen - The next night... Melkesh lies on her hammock and stares blankly out the window as the tears stream down her cheeks. She hears a creak and turns toward the door. Tiberius steps through the doorway into the hut and strides toward her. TibeRIUS Are you all right? MelKESH No. Im not. I couldnt even focus on the lesson today. Melkesh closes her eyes and sighs. MeLKESH (CONTD) Hes so different from how he was before we were selected. Hes become very aloof. TiberIUS You think his discovery of his powers has caused this? MeLKESH His obsession with finding the Ashal is what has changed him. It is all he cares about. TiberIUS And yet you still help him to find it? MeLKESH Im a fool, I know; but love often makes us do foolish things. Ext. Training camp one - later Tiberius fights an older man who wears priests robes. The camp leader and the other warrior recruits watch. Tiberius brings up his arm to block the older mans blow. He smirks in triumph when the attempt succeeds. 0002000009FC0001064C9F6,He hears girls giggling and turns to see Melkesh outside of her hut giggling with a dark-haired girl. He yelps in surprise when his feet fly out from under him and he lands on his backside. The other warrior recruits laugh themselves to tears. Old man You musnt let your guard down, Tiberius, or you will pay the price. Tiberius gets slowly to his feet and rubs his sore backside. TibeRIUS I didnt let my guard down, Father. Old man But you did. Winning one battle does not ensure that you will win the war. Melkesh does not let her mind wander so. TibeRIUS But magic is easier than hand-to-hand combat, Father. Old man Is it? Magic require equally as much focus as force does. She must imagine herself performing the action, as you must. Never say magic is easier, my son, until you have tried to perform it for yourself. He again turns toward Melkesh whose gaze locks with his and then she enters her hut. He turns back and bows to the old man before hurrying toward her hut. As he approaches the hut, the door opens. Hes surprised, but he enters the hut. Int. Training camp one hut Melkesh reaches into her bag and slips out an EP. She then moves toward him. MelKESH I could use a second set of eyes for this. Melkesh waves the EP. Tiberius arches an eyebrow. TiberIUS And Im that second set of eyes? She nods. TiberIUS (CONTD) Why are you helping him? MeLKESH I am his betrothed. Is it not my duty to ensure his success and happiness? Tiberius shakes his head and grasps her hands in his hands. TibeRIUS Not at the expense of your own happiness. MeLKESH You helped him. Tiberius stiffens. TibeRIUS Thats different. MeLKESH How? TibeRIUS (v.0.) Because when I helped him, I wasnt attracted to you. TibeRIUS (CONTD) I...it...it just is. She glares at him. MelKESH Thats logical, then. Tiberius grunts in annoyance and stride toward the door. MeLKESH (CONTD) Wait! Arent you going to help me? He halts and sighs. TibeRIUS After my bath. He leaves without another word. Melkesh sighs and lies down on her hammock, then browses the EPs contents. Int. Training camp one - hut ek - later Tiberius sits in a tub he brought in from outside. TiberIUS (v.o.) Why does the thought of Melkesh helping Jacobi bother me so? Tiberiuss conscience (v.O.) You love her. You want her all to yourself. Tiberius frowns and shakes his head in denial. Tiberius (v.O.) No. Im simply worried about her. TIBERIUSS CONSCIENCE (v.O.) Then why are you so eager to hold her in your arms again? Tiberius (v.O.) Maybe I do love her. TiberIUSS CONSCIENCE (v.O.) 000200000C4700011042C41,Youre better for her than Jacobi is. You dont ignore her when it strikes your fancy. Tiberius (v.O.) I love her. Tiberius steps from the tub and wraps a towel around his waist. He then dresses. Int. Training camp one - hut teen - later Tiberius enters the hut without knocking. Melkesh turns toward the door and smiles. MelKESH Wonderful. Youre here. Ill light the lantern. Tiberius Melkesh? She turns toward him and the smile slips from her features. She stares at him for several long moments before lighting the lantern and moving to slip the EP from her bag. He strides toward her and grasps her wrist. She looks up at him, confused. He pulls her to standing position and their gazes lock. His gaze drops to her lips as her tongue peaks out to lick her lips. He lowers his head to hers and covers her mouth with his. Melkesh, surprised, doesnt move for a moment. She then begins to return the kiss. Tiberius jerks away as though burned. Without looking back, he hurries from the hut. Ext. Training camp one - later Tiberius fights hand-to-hand with an older boy. Melkesh walks by and an infatuated smile crosses Tiberiuss lips. His distraction leaves an opening for the boy Tiberius is fighting. Tiberius turns back only to be punched in the face. A group of girls watches the scene and they giggle. Int. training camp one - hut teen - next day Tiberius knocks on the door. MelKESH Come in. The door opens and she looks up. Tiberius stands in the doorway. TibeRIUS I wanted to apologize for my behavior yesterday. It was unacceptable and it wont happen again. MelKESH No. Its all right. I--well--I liked it. The kiss I mean. He stares at her, stunned. TibeRIUS Really? She flushes and nods. MeLKESH Yeah. He strides toward her and cups her cheek. Their gazes lock an they stare for a few moments before he lowers his head and presses his lips to hers. She returns the kiss. Her hands slide up and twine behind his neck. Ext. Training camp one - next day Tiberius carries a jug of water from the stream atop his head and notices Melkesh. An infatuated smile crosses his lips just before he falls into a ditch in his path that he didnt notice. A group of girls watches the scene and they giggle. Int. Training camp one - hut teen - later Tiberius opens his eyes. Melkesh looks down at him and smiles slightly. She then dabs his forehead with a wet cloth. Ext. Forest OF TASHEE- LATER Melkesh enters the clearing and frowns when she doesnt see Jacobi. Jacobi emerges from the woods behind her. She starts and turns to see him. She sighs in relief. MeLKESH Dont sneak up on me like that! JACOBI I wasnt sneaking. I was here the whole time. Melkesh rolls her eyes and sighs. MeLKESH Fine, then. JacOBI Were you able to decode it? MelKESH No, I wasnt. Jacobi grunts in frustration. JaCOBI Well, I guess we have no choice but to find the stone ourselves. Ext. Guardian main camp - six months later... Twelve of the recruits stand in a line facing the recruiters. Among them are Tiberius, Melkesh, and Jacobi. Man 1 smiles. Man 1 Congratulations, my apprentices, on your selection. I have no doubt that you will do us proud. 000200000A3700011C83A31,Man 1 pauses. Man 1 (CONTD) You will be permitted to return home for six months to visit with your families before you are expected to return to be officially initiated. The recruits cheer. The recruits are dismissed and each follows their camp leader back to the place from where they hiked. Int. Tutis knolls - sheORAN EDUCATIONAL FACILITY - launch bay - later Jacobi, Melkesh, and Tiberius enter the launch bay to find Jacorans personal transport waiting for them. The transports doors open, and the three enter the craft. Int. City of aerydon - guest quarters - later Tiberius, Jacobi, Melkesh, and Jacoran enter a spacious apartment-style room. The room is very pristine with few decorations. Jacoran This is where you will stay until you are expected to return to the main Guardian camp. Jacoran moves toward the back of the room and indicates two bedrooms, one on the right and one on the left. Jacoran (CONTD) Jacobi, you and Tiberius will sleep in one room while Melkesh will sleep in another. Both rooms are equipped with two economy-sized beds. He enters the bedroom on the left, moves toward the back and opens a door to reveal a small bathroom. JacorAN (CONTD) Each bedroom has its own bathroom, which includes a shower, sink, and toliet. The four exit and the bedroom, then move into the kitchen. JacorAN (CONTD) This is your kitchen. The space is small and cramped with limited cupboard space. The four then exit into the living area. This space is only slightly larger than the kitchen with a sofa, coffee table, and a flat screen embedded into the wall at eye level. Jacoran (CONTD) All entertainment is provided through the entertainment module. You may view fiction audio-visual works, serial audio-visual works, and play audio-visual interactive games. Jacoran pauses. Jacoran (CONTD) If you choose to buy food and entertainment programs, I would recommend seeking paid work to cover these expenses. Positions will be listed on the job net. Jacoran pauses. JacoraN (CONTD) I will leave you now to get settled. Jacoran smiles. Jacoran (CONTD) Congratulations on your Guardian status. Jacoran exits the room. Int. City of aerydon - guest quarters - bedroom one - later The three sit cross-legged on the floor of the room playing a game, which is similar to dominoes. Tiberius matches a symbol on one end of the Ustilo piece in his hand to that of one on the floor. He folds his hands and bows his head. TiberIUS Ustilo. Melkesh inclines her head and marks down a tally for Tiberius on the EP in her hands. JacobI Well need traveling currency if were to go seeking the Ashal. 000200000642000126B463C,Jacobi matches a symbol on one end of the Ustilo piece in his hand to that of one on the floor. He folds his hands and bows his head. Jacobi (CONTD) Ustilo. TiberIUS Are you sure this errand is wise, Jacobi? If we do not attend the Guardians initiation ceremony, all of our hard work will have been for naught. Jacobi scowls. JacOBI Once we have the stone, we can make them hold another initiation ceremony for us. With the stone, we can have anything we want. MelKESH And where would we get traveling currency? JacOBI We work, of course. I found three openings for teaching assistants on the job net this afternoon. TibeRIUS But we dont have any teaching experience. JacobI Its only grading essays. MelKESH There must be a faster way. JacOBI Why the rush? The stone isnt going anywhere. MELKESH Surely, the Guardian council will have worked out what information we were attempting to access the day we broke into the Archives by now. JaCOBI If they were going to act, they would have done so long before now. They would have pulled us from training if necessary. MeLKESH (pauses) The sooner we find the stone, the sooner we can use it, right? TibeRIUS What are you suggesting? Melkesh turns to Jacobi. MeLKESH You can hack anything, right? JaCOBI Yeah. So? MeLKESH Maybe we could...well, maybe we could borrow some money from your father. JACOBI And ask him how? Yeah, dad. Were going on a quest for a lost stone can you... Jacobi trails off and his eyes widen. JACOBI (CONTD) Are you insane? My father would kill me! MeLKESH Well be long gone before he notices the funds are missing. 00020000074400012CF073E,JACOBI He has alerts! Hell know the instant we withdraw the funds! MeLKESH But he wont be able to stop it. TiberIUS If were caught... MELKESH They wont know whos done it if we cover our tracks. TiberIUS Im telling you its not wise. JacOBI If we find the stone before they find us... MeLKESH Then we can use the stones power to avoid punishment. TiberIUS This is insane. We should get traveling currency through honest means so they have no reason to suspect we are even searching for the stone. JACOBI Well do it tomorrow night. Well access the funds from an EP outside of the city. They wont be able to trace the hack. TibeRIUS And how are we supposed to explain our absence? JacOBI Research. INT. LAUNCH BAY - NEXT NIGHT Jacobi, Melkesh, and Tiberius sit inside a watercraft inside the bay. Jacobi enters a series of commands into an EP. Tiberius paces nervously. TIBERIUS Well be caught, Im telling you! MeLKESH They have no reason to suspect. Theyll check the log and see that weve been authorized access to this watercraft for a short research trip. JacOBI Im in. Melkesh and Tiberius rush to stand beside him and look over to see the EP screen. Jacobi (CONTD) Now I just need to find fathers account... Cut to: Close up of the EP. The title at the top reads Fund Storage, Inc. The screen blinks and changes. The second line reads Lahari, Jacoran D. The third line reads Rp24,929,950. Melkeshs eyes widen. MeLKESH Wow. 24 million rupees! JacOBI Shh. Someone will hear you. MeLKESH Nineteen thousand should be enough. Jacobi nods and touches his finger to the transfer button on the EP screen. He enters 19,000 into the box and touches the complete transaction button. The three pause. A message pops up on the screen notifying them that the amount has been transferred. Jacobi opens the false account that he created. 000200000CC90001342ECC3,Cut to: The screen blinks and changes. The second line on the EP reads Lahki, Rahid A. The third now reads Rp19,000. A banging noise catches their attention and they turn toward the doors leading into the corridor. A rapid beeping fills the cabin. They glance down at the EP, which is flashing a message that reads security breach. TibeRIUS I told you wed be caught! MeLKESH Relax. Itll take them a while to get in. I changed the entrance code and those doors are thick as a selkies hide. By the time they get in, well be gone. JACOBI Well, I dont want to hang around. He enters a few commands into the console in front of him. The engines of the craft rev up and then stall. JaCOBI (CONTD) Damn engines. MeLKESH The vents need to be closed and the fuel needs to be heated before theyll start. JaCOBI We dont have time to wait for the fuel to heat up! Jacobi rapidly enters a series of commands into the console. MeLKESH I told you, itll take them awhile to get through those doors. Through the open back doors of the craft, they hear a loud hissing noise. They turn to see a large shape being etched into the doors. The edges of the shape glow a fiery red. TibeRIUS A while? Jacobi enters a command to close the rear doors. They hear a crash as metal collides with metal. TibeRIUS (CONTD) Theyre through! Get us out of here! Jacobi again tries to start the engines, but they continue to stall. TiberIUS (CONTD) Now what? Jacobi, in the meantime, enters the command to open the bay doors to the open waters. The doors open. An energy shield fluctuates slightly as it struggles to hold back the initial water pressure. JaCOBI Theyre trying to override and close the doors! MelKESH Move over! I have an idea. Jacobi slides over and she enters a series of commands into the console. MeLKESH (CONTD) There! That should keep them locked out. Jacobi returns to the console and tries to start the engines again. The engines rev up and burst to life. He then turns off the shield and the little craft speeds off into the ocean. Ext. ForesT OF TASHEE- later A squirrel-like creature runs up a tree and climbs into a hole in the trunk. Tiberius, Melkesh, and Jacobi halt at a fork in the path. They look down the path to the right, then down the other to the left, and then at one another. JacOBI Theres no going back once we start looking for the Ashal. They wont hold another ceremony for us until we have the Ashal. TiberIUS Were with you. MelKESH All the way. Jacobi grins and the three walk down the left path of the fork. Ext. Forest of tashee - later Montage: 1. The sun sets. 2. Tiberius, Melkesh, and Jacobi set up camp. 3. The three sleep. 4. The sun rises. 5. The three walk along the path. 6. The sun sets. 7. The three set up camp. 8. The three sleep. 9. The sun rises. 10. The three walk along the path. EXT. MONASTARY - A FEW DAYS LATER As the arrive at the top of a hill, Tiberius, Melkesh, and Jacobi stumble upon a monastery. The three exchange glances and then shrug. Tiberius moves forward and tugs on a long rope hanging from a bell. The bell rings loudly. He releases the rope and steps back. Several moments later, the wooden door opens with a creak and a skinny, bald man pokes his head out. He smiles. 0002000005CD000140F15C7,Bald man Ah travelers. You must be hungry and tired from your journey. Come in, come in. The man opens the gate the rest of the way and the three step through. INT. MONASTARY - CONTINUOUS They step into a garden-courtyard within which several smaller buildings reside. The man leads them to a building off to the right containing sleeping quarters. They enter the building. INT. BUILDING - CONTINUOUS They walk down a narrow corridor in silence. The man then stops and opens a door on the left, revealing a modest room with little furniture and two beds of straw. Bald man Dinner is at seven. Someone will be sent to show you the way. In the meantime, feel free to rest. The man hurries from the room, and closes the door behind him. Melkesh's brow furrows. MeLKESH That was odd. They're usually a lot more wary of strangers. Jacobi shifts slightly. Melkesh stares at him in shock. MeLKESH (CONTD) Jacobi, you didn't! JACOBI Well, I might have implanted a suggestion that we were expected. MeLKESH At this rate, you won't need the Ashal to control people. Jacobi opens his mouth to reply, but Tiberius cuts him off. TibeRIUS Why here? JaCOBI They're religious leaders. They might know the stone's location. MelKESH And how exactly do you plan on asking?'Oh, yes. We're looking for an extremely powerful magical object. Tell us, please, where would we find it? Tiberius cuts off Jacobi's reply. TiBERIUS Look, it's been a long day. Let's all get some rest before dinner. 000200000621000146B861B,Jacobi and Melkesh nod. Jacobi then lies down on one of the straw beds and glances at Melkesh expectantly. She hmphs in annoyance and lies down on the other straw bed. Tiberius glances back and forth between the two before sighing. Tiberius lies down on the straw bed beside Melkesh. Jacobi's eyes narrow as Melkesh spoons with Tiberius. Tiberius avoids Jacobi's gaze and closes his eyes. INT. BUILDING - SLEEPING QUARTERS - LATER Tiberius opens his eyes when he hears a knock on the door. He looks down to find Melkesh wrapped around him. He carefully extracts himself from her arms and legs. He then stands and moves to answer the door. He opens it to find a short, fat man standing there. The man bows. Fat man Dinner is served. TiberIUS We will be ready in a moment. He closes the door and turns to find Jacobi and Melkesh standing behind him. TiberiUS (CONTD) Ready? They nod. The three exit the room. Int. Banquet hall - later Tiberius, Melkesh, and Jacobi enter the banquet hall. Inside is a long, rectangular table where ten monks are seated. The oldest monk sits in a single chair at the head of the table. Tiberius, Melkesh, and Jacobi follow the short, fat man to their seats at the head of the table. Two other monks enter with soup and bread for everyone seated. Everyone at the table bows their heads in prayer. They then begin to eat. Jacobis gaze locks with Tiberiuss and then with Melkeshs. He then turns to the oldest monk. Jacobi We have come across information on a stone--a stone that stores memories of past lives. Do you know of it? 000200000B5200014CD3B4C,Everyone at the table looks up from their meals, their expressions anxious. The oldest monk stares at Jacobi blankly for several long moments before he responds. Oldest monk We have heard of this stone. Jacobi What have you heard of it? Oldest monk The old stories, of course--its use for storing memories, its creators, the reason it was created... Jacobi We seek this stone--this Ashal. The others gasp. Oldest monk For what purpose do you seek it? Jacobi For the same reason all Guardians seek it. OLDEST MONK No. You seek it for yourself--not for the good of mankind. Jacobi You are wrong. The oldest monk bows his head. OldeST MONK If you came to us in hopes of learning the stones location, your journey has been for naught. No one in this camp knows the stones resting place. Jacobi glances at the other monks. Their gazes drop and they remain silent. EXT. MONASTARY - NEXT MORNING The three continue east. At the forest's edge, Jacobi turns and stares at the monastery. His brow furrows. Jacobi If we leave, it's like we're giving up. They must have it. Why else would they guard their temple so closely? TiberIUS They have many valuable treasures there--paintings, statues...why wouldn't they want to protect them? Jacobi opens his mouth to respond, but Melkesh cuts him off. Melkesh It doesn't matter if they do have it. They're not likely to give it to us no matter how kindly we ask. Jacobi Then we'll just have to take it from them. TibeRIUS Are you out of your mind? If we're caught JaCOBI If we're caught, the worst theyll do is take the stone from us and hurry us on our way. These people arent violent and, by their law, cannot cause us harm. Tiberius pauses. Jacobi (CONTD) Come on, then. Jacobi then makes his way back toward the monastery. MelkesH Jacobi, no! He ignores her and continues walking. She and Tiberius exchange an annoyed glance and them hurry to catch up with him. EXT. MONASTARY - GATE - LATER The three stare at the gate. MelKESH How exactly do you plan to get in? Jacobi closes his eyes and faces an open hand toward the gate and mutters an unlocking charm. The gate opens. Jacobi moves to enter the courtyard. Melkesh grabs his arm and he turns toward her. MelKESH (CONTD) Do you really think we won't be caught? JacoBI What's magic for if not a means to achieve an end? He pulls his arm from her grip and enters the courtyard. Tiberius enters after him. Melkesh sighs and follows. INT. MONASTARY - LATER The three peak around a corner at the temple. Two GUARDS, one short and one tall, stand on either side of the temple entrance. TiberIUS How will we get past the guards? JacoBI A confusion curse should do nicely. MeLKESH But that charm can only be used at close range. JacOBI They'll only get a glimpse at me before the confusion curse takes effect. Before she can protest further, he darts toward the temple using various carts for cover. 00020000074C0001581F746,EXT. TEMPLE - SIMULTANEOUSLY The tall guard freezes and frowns, his gaze resting on a building in the distance. Tall guard Did you see that? I thought I saw a kid Short guard I didn't see anything. I think you've had one too many glasses of wine, lad. You're seeing things. Tall guard But I only had one. Short guard Aye? Then maybe one is one too many. Before the tall man can reply, he again sees movement. He turns to find Jacobi standing in front of him. Jacobi Confusio! Jacobi checks to be sure both men are unconscious before waving Tiberius and Melkesh on. He enters the temple. INT. MONASTARY - SIMULTANEOUSLY Tiberius and Melkesh exchange a worried glance and Tiberius moves toward the temple. Melkesh follows. INT. TEMPLE - LATER The three enter a large chamber. They move to examine some Hindi writings on the far wall. At the center of these writings is the outline of a handprint. Jacobi's brows furrow as he interprets the writings. JacOBI If you seek to enter, each of you must press your hand to mine. But beware: speak the entrance phrase or be trapped forever in my maze. TiberIUS How will I get in? I have no magical ability. Jacobi frowns. JacOBI Melkesh, isn't there a locking charm? Melkesh nods. Tiberius and Melkesh step forward. Melkesh presses her hand to the print. Melkesh Invado. Claustrio. A trap door opens at their feet and the three fall through. INT. TEMPLE - LATER The three fall down a spiraling slide. They yell in terror. Several long minutes later, they reach the bottom. The slide dumps Melkesh onto the floor and she falls face first into a pile of hay. Continued yelling grows closer. Before she can move out of the way, Tiberius drops off the slide on top of her. Then Jacobi drops off the slide on top of Tiberius. The two boys roll quickly to the side and jump to their feet, then helping Melkesh to her feet. 00020000062800015F65622,Tiberius brushes several stray strands of hair back from her face. TiberIUS Are you all right? She nods. Jacobi reaches up and picks several straws of hay from her hair. She smiles goofily and Jacobi grins in return. The three then begin to wander the corridors in search of clues that might lead them to the Ashal. INT. TEMPLE - CORRIDORS - LATER Jacobi leans closer to the wall he's standing in front of to decipher the writings. JaCOBI Two openings up and three openings downand what you seek will be found. He sighs. JacOBI (CONTD) (mutters) I hate these confounded riddles. Melkesh frowns. MelKESH Is it referring to stairs or doorways? Jacobi shrugs. Tiberius's brows furrow in thought. TiberIUS Wait. These symbols together can also mean passageways. He steps forward to read the writings. TiberiUS (CONTD) Two passageways up and three passageways down and what you seek will be found. First left, then right. Now sit tight, because down you go. Melkesh nods. Melkesh That makes more sense. Jacobi nods and the three continue forward. INT. TEMPLE - TUNNELS - LATER The three arrive at the first fork. Jacobi goes left and the other two follow. The tunnels slope gradually upward. INT. TEMPLE - TUNNELS - LATER The three arrive at a second fork and go right. INT. TEMPLE - TUNNELS - LATER The tunnel narrows and stretches on in front of them, seemingly endless. MelkesH Maybe the tunnels were recently diverted because of a cave-in. This might not even be the right tunnel. Jacobi shakes his head. JacOBI We didn't take any detours. This is the correct pa 0002000005720001658756C,Suddenly, his foot meets empty space. He begins to fall forward, a stunned expression on his face. Melkesh and Tiberius rush forward to keep him from falling. Once on stable ground again, he looks down to find an opening that becomes a vertical tunnel that spirals downward. He exchanges a glance with the other two and shrugs. He then jumps into the tunnel and yells as he drops. Tiberius and Melkesh try to grab him, but are pulled in as well. INT. UNDERNEATH THE TEMPLE - TUNNEL - LATER The three yell in terror as they plummet at break-neck speed straight downward. The fall ends as Melkesh drops into a deep, cool pool of water. She swims for the surface. Her head breaks the surface of the water and she draws in several gasps of air. A hand grasps her shoulder and she turns to find Jacobi and Tiberius treading water behind her. The three swim for dry land. Several minutes later, they climb onto the wet dirt and cough to clear their lungs of the water. Melkesh's nose wrinkles. She raises a wet arm to her nose and inhales. Nothing. She grabs a handful of the mud and brings it to her nose, then inhales. She gags at the strength of the smell. MelKESH By the Gods, thats horrid! Jacobi (wryly) I dont even want to know how it got that way. Tiberius and Jacobi help her to her feet and continue into the next chamber. INT. UNDERNEATH THE TEMPLE - PRIMARY CHAMBER - LATER 00020000068E00016AF3688,Jacobi studies more etchings and smiles in satisfaction. JaCOBI We're getting close. Melkesh frowns. MeLKESH How can you tell? Jacobi shrugs and points ahead of them. JACOBI The etchings say 'What you seek lies ahead.' Tiberius and Melkesh grin eagerly. The three take off at a run toward the next chamber. INT. UNDERNEATH THE TEMPLE - SECONDARY CHAMBER - LATER The three round the corner eager to collect their prize, but they are disappointed to find the chamber is empty. Jacobi growls in frustration and throws himself against the wall, fists clenched. JaCOBI It should be right here! Why the devil isn't it? Tiberius's lips tighten. TiberIUS The monks. They must have moved it when we started asking about it. Oldest monk Very good, my son. The three turn to find the oldest monk standing behind them. Jacobi cries out in rage and flings himself at the man. To his surprise, he keeps moving and falls to the ground. Oldest mONK (CONTD) Your aggression is useless. I am only a projection. Jacobi's nostrils flare in anger. JacOBI Where is it? Oldest monk Where you will not find it. Continue on. Do not seek the stone or your search may steal your sanity. The image dissolves. JACOBI I won't give up. I WILL find it. Tiberius sighs in annoyance. TibeRIUS Now what? (CONTD) JacOBI We continue. The same direction we were headed. No doubt he has taken the stone toward the shores where the population is thinner in hopes that no one will find it. Melkesh frowns. MelkESH But how will we get back out of here? Jacobi points to a small hole in the ceiling and then to a ledge just below it. JacOBI We climb. Jacobi moves toward the wall and then begins to climb. 0002000007820001717B77C,Once Jacobi is a few feet up, Tiberius begins to climb the wall as well. A few moments later, Melkesh begins to climb up behind Tiberius. The three struggle to climb the vertical wall. At last, Jacobi reaches the top and scrambles onto the ledge. He gasps for breath and then helps Tiberius up onto the ledge. MelKESH Jacobi! Melkesh, who is near the top, extends a hand. Jacobi and Tiberius turn and grab it. The two nearly lose their grip on her hand. They grunt with effort as they struggle to pull her the rest of the way onto the ledge. Once she is on the ledge, the three collapse and gasp for breath. JacOBI Now to get out of here. He faces an open palm toward a small hole in the ceiling and mutters a disintegration curse to widen it. Tiberius covers Melkesh's body with his body as debris rains down from the ceiling. The dust clears and the three look up to see a hole big enough to fit two adults. JacOBI (CONTD) Tiberius, you go up first. I'll give you a boost. Once you're out, I'll boost Melkesh. Then you two find a vine or something so I can climb out. Jacobi twines his hands about thigh level and Tiberius steps into them. Jacobi lifts him and Tiberius grabs the edge and pulls himself out. Jacobi lifts Melkesh next. Tiberius grips her hands and pulls her up and out. EXT. FOREST - CONTINUOUS Tiberius turns to Melkesh. TiberIUS Grab a vine. She nods and runs to a nearby tree, careful to avoid the thorns on the vine and pulls it loose. She returns and hands it to Tiberius who lowers it into the hole. TiberIUS (CONTD) Tie the end around a tree. Melkesh nods and ties it around a tree trunk. INT. UNDERNEATH THE forest - SECONDARY CHAMBER - CONTINUOUS Jacobi grips the vine, careful to avoid the thorns and tugs to be sure its secure. He then begins to climb, continuing to avoid the thorns. EXT. FOREST - LATER Melkesh's brows furrow in concern as she notices the vine starting to break. 000200000663000178F765D,MelkESH Hurry, Jacobi! A hand reaches out of the hole. Tiberius grips it and pulls Jacobi the rest of the way out. Just as Jacobi collapses to the ground the vine snaps and drops down into the chamber. The three rest for several moments and then continue on. INT. CAVE - LATER The three linger several feet from the entrance to the cave as the rain falls in sheets and thunder echoes in the distance. They sit close to a small fire to keep warm. They reminisce about warm beds, home-cooked meals, and dry clothing. INT. CAVE - TWO DAYS LATER Melkesh lies on the soft cave floor, asleep. A few moments later, her eyes open and she glances at the cave entrance. The rain has at last let up. She wakes Tiberius and Jacobi. The three pack up their belongings and continue on their way. EXT. NEAR A SMALL VILLAGE - LATER The three see several buildings ahead, which means civilization and food. They exchange excited grins and sprint toward the village. EXT. VILLAGE - LATER The three enter the village only to find many of the buildings in ruins and some covered by mud. One man stands in the middle of the street and clutches his weeping children. Jacobi approaches him. JacOBI What happened here? Man sighs. Man The rains created mudslides. He turns and gestures at the ruins. Man (CONTD) Our homes and our fields...theyre ruined! Another man, the towns LEADER, approaches, his gaze narrowed. Leader Who are you? Why are you here? TiberIUS We have traveled from a faraway land in search of a stone, the Ashal, said to hold the memories of the Guardians. MelKESH We were caught in the storm last eve without food or water. 0002000004A800017F544A2,JacOBI When we came upon your village, we approached in hopes of being able to obtain food, water, and perhaps a bed for the night. The LEADER pauses. Leader The things for which you ask are scarce. However, were you to help us rebuild our homes, we would be willing to feed and shelter you. Once the village has been rebuilt, I am also willing to tell you all I know of the Ashal. Jacobi nods and the two shake hands. EXT. VILLAGE - LATER Jacobi and Tiberius carry buckets of mud to two separate huts, then mix in tree sap and ground tree bark. They then spread the mixture over cracks and holes in the foundation. EXT. VILLAGE - CONTINUOUS The village stands in ruins. DisSOLVE TO: Ext. Village - later The village has been repaired. EXT. VILLAGE - conTINUOUS Jacobi, Melkesh, and Tiberius stand back to admire their work. The village is rebuilt. The leader approaches them and smiles. Leader Thank you, strangers, for your help. Though it seems a small gesture given the sacrifices you have made to assist us, Id like to invite you to be the first guests to dine in my new home. Following the meal, I will tell you all I know about the Ashal. INT. VILLAGE - LEADER'S HOME - LATER 000200000611000183F660B,The leader's wife clears the remaining dishes from the table and exits the room. The leader takes a gulp from the cup in his hand and sets it on the table, twining his fingers together and focusing on Tiberius, Melkesh, and Jacobi. Leader You know the story of the stone's origins I take it? The three nod. The leader pauses. Leader (CONTD) Do you know of the boy who used the stone's power of persuasion to enslave thousands? Jacobi's eyes widen. The leader grins. Leader (CONTD) I see. Then I suppose that is where I shall begin. The leader pauses. LEADER (CONTD) First, I must explain what is meant by power of persuasion. What good would it do to store the memories if their owners couldn't be convinced that the memories were real? However, the Guardians didnt count on the unusually exceptional talents of a young boy, who used the stone to discover the secrets behind the power of persuasion. Once the boy discovered this secret, he used it to persuade thousands to revolt again the Guardians and their rules restricting certain charms and curses. JacOBI Why did the Guardians not simply use the power of persuasion to convince them to fight the boy? The man shakes his head. Leader The curse, because of its implications, was forbidden. The curse was only used on the stone as a last desperate attempt by to ensure that the memories of a people lived on, even if their physical forms didn't. Jacobi, Melkesh, and Tiberius exchange awed expressions. Jacobi pauses and clears his throat. JaCOBI Do you know where the stone is now? 00020000067C00018A01676,The man smiles sadly. Leader I'm afraid I don't, lad. No one has --not for hundreds of years. Jacobi sinks back into his chair and crosses his arms, his lips thin in frustration. Leader (CONTD) Be warned, lad. Seeking the Ashal will bring you only hardship and finding it will bring you a great deal more. EXT. VILLAGE'S EDGE - LATER The three leave the village and continue walking Tiberius pauses. TiberIUS Maybe he's right, Jacobi. Jacobi glares at him. TiberIUS (CONTD) I mean look at what all this searching has gotten us--nothing. JacOBI If you want to turn back, fine. I hope you receive a hero's welcome among your Guardian colleagues! But mark my words-I will find it! Jacobi storms ahead, leaving Tiberius and Melkesh behind. Tiberius's gaze locks with Melkesh's and he's stunned to find tears sliding down her cheeks. He stops and hugs her close. She throws her arms around his waist and sobs into his shoulder. Gradually, her sobs fade and she pulls away slightly, her gaze locking with his. They stare at each other for several moments before he lowers his head and brushes his lips against hers. Both jump back as though burned. TibeRIUS I--I'm sorry. I-- His gaze drops from hers. She exhales a shaky breath. MelKESH We'd better hurry or we'll fall behind. Without another word, she hurries to catch up with Jacobi. Tiberius's brows furrow as he hurries after her. EXT. FOREST - LATER Tiberius finishes making his bed from blankets packed in his bag. He looks up to see Jacobi fueling the campfire. He looks past Jacobi to see Melkesh still working on her bed of blankets. Their gazes lock for a few moments before she turns away. 0002000006100001907760A,Tiberius lies down and stares up at the stars until he drifts off into a restless sleep. EXT. FOREST - LATER The three stop to boil water from the river in a small pot. They wait while it cools enough to drink. Suddenly, they hear something rustle in the bushes. Before they can react, they are surrounded by several dirty, unshaven men. Tallest man Hand over yer bags and nobody will get hurt. MelKESH We have nothing of value. Tallest man We'll decide that. The TALLEST MAN extends his hand. When Melkesh still refuses to give up her bag, the man tries to take it from her. He slaps her across the face and she gasps in pain, then collapses to the ground. Jacobi yells in outrage and rushes at the man only to be thrown to the ground. The men laugh. Tiberius glances at Jacobi then drops to his knees to check on Melkesh. Jacobi's lips thin in frustration, then closes his eyes. He faces his palm toward the men. JacOBI Sino! The men collapse to the ground, screaming and writhing in pain. Melkesh jumps to her feet and faces her palm toward the men. MeLKESH Desino! The men still and stumble to their feet. They glance wide-eyed at Jacobi before running in the opposite direction. Jacobi smirks. Melkesh stares at him, her face pale and her eyes wide in horror. EXT. FOREST - LATER Melkesh avoids Jacobi's gaze as she makes her bed. Jacobi Tiberius. Tiberius looks up. JacOBI (CONTD) We'll need more kindling. Tiberius nods and moves to enter the forest. Melkesh Wait! Tiberius turns. Melkesh hurries toward him and grips his upper arm. 000200000D2500019681D1F,MeLKESH (CONTD) I'll go with you. Tiberius nods and the two enter the forest. EXT. FOREST - LATER Tiberius and Melkesh search the forest floor for small sticks to add to the piles in their arms. MeLKESH You were right. Tiberius glances toward her and frowns. TiberIUS Was I? Melkesh nods. MeLKESH This search for the Ashal-he's turning to whatever means necessary and it's consuming him. Her gaze locks with his. MeLKESH (CONTD) We can't be certain of what he will and won't do anymore. Tears slide down her cheeks. He drops the pile of wood to the side and cups her face in his hands. TiberIUS I won't let him do anything to hurt or control you. I promise. Melkesh's brows furrow. MeLKESH Why would you protect me? TibeRIUS Good men always protect the ones that they love. Melkesh's eyes widen. MeLKESH You-you Tiberius smiles. TiberIUS Love you? From the moment I laid eyes on you. I just didn't want to admit it to myself. You and Jacobiwhen he introduced you to his father as his betrothed Melkesh frowns. MeLKESH What about Kalika? I though you two were He grins wryly. Tiberius We were, yes. But I didnt love her...no matter how hard I tried to convince myself I did. MeLKESH I'm sorry. He strokes her cheek with the pad of his thumb. TibeRIUS Im not. He lowers his head and kisses her. Her arms wrap around his neck and she returns the kiss. EXT. FOREST CLEARING - LATER The moon lights a clearing in the forest. In the center of that clearing a man and woman lay on the ground, their features obscured by shadow. They hold one another tightly as they kiss. The sound of heavy breathing grows louder and the sound of two heartbeats grows louder and speeds up. SERIES OF SHOTS: 1. Light falls on the woman's neck as the man kisses it. 2. The woman's hands go to the back of the man's neck and twine. She arches her back, thrusting her still-covered abdomen forward. 3. The woman calls out "Tiberius" breathily and her voice echoes as though far away. 4. The man, Tiberius, then kisses his way back up to her mouth, brushing his lips against hers. 5. Light falls on the man's face. "Open your eyes," he urges. 6. We see the woman's eyes up close. Out of frame, Tiberius urges again, "Beloved, open your eyes." The woman's eyes open and we see sparkling blue eyes. The woman (Melkesh) gasps in relief and her body tenses, her back arching. She then collapses and pants for breath. EXT. FOREST CLEARING - LATER The two lay snuggled together. Both look at one another and smile. TiberIUS Mmm. We should probably get back. He's expecting kindling. Melkesh nods. The two stand and brush the dirt and leaves from their clothes. Tiberius picks a few leaves from her hair. They gather their piles of kindling and return to the camp. EXT. FOREST - ONE YEAR LATER TITLE: One year later The three sit around the fire. Tiberius and Melkesh try to convince Jacobi to abandon the search. TiberIUS We've been searching for the Ashal for a year, Jacobi. If we haven't found it by now, we're not going to find it. Melkesh He's right. We have no leads. It's a dead end, Jacobi. Jacobi glares at them. JacOBI Don't you see? If we give in, the Guardians win. Tiberius shakes his head. TiberIUS You're obsessed, Jacobi. Tiberius stands. TiberIUS (CONTD) You cannot be reasoned with, so I leave you to your madness. May the Gods save you. 00020000066A0001A3A0664,Tiberius enters the woods. Melkesh stands. MelKESH I have remained blind to your obsession until now. I cannot remain blind any longer. I leave you with it. Melkesh enters the woods. Jacobi Fine! Leave! You'll be the first to know the power of persuasion! END OF ACT TWO MONTAGE - LATER 1. Tiberius, dressed in plain brown robes, enters a temple and drops to his knees, bowing his head in worship. 2. Melkesh cooks in her aunt's kitchen and cleans her aunt's home. 3. Jacobi continues searching for the Ashal, his features becoming more demented and less human every day. EXT. MELKESH'S AUNT'S HOME - LATER Melkesh looks up from the basket of laundry and smiles. A man and woman approach holding hands. Melkesh runs toward them and embraces each in turn. INT. MONASTARY - MUD HUT - LATER Tiberius sits in a dark mud hut studying a book containing Guardian teachings. The hut is windowless and the only light within it comes from an oil lamp sitting on a nearby tree stump. Upon two piles of straw sit two older men, one tall and fat and the other short and thin, both of whom talk animatedly. Tall man We must find a place to hide it. Short man But where? There isn't a place on Earth that we can hide it that he won't find it. Tall man There must be somewhere Short man What if we disguised it? Tall man How? The short man's eyes widen. SHORT MAN Within the queen's red gem. Curious now, Tiberius listens for more. The short man freezes and a look of horror crosses his face. Short man (CONTD) He approaches. The short man then moves toward Tiberius and grasps his arm. Short man (CONTD) Tiberius, you must go, my son. 00020000067B0001AA04675,The man jerks him to standing position and then all but shoves Tiberius out the back door. Tiberius tries to open the door, but he can't. He hears the muffled voices of the elders as well as another voice, which is young, confident, harsh, and commanding. Suddenly, he hears someone scream. Afraid, he stumbles back from the door and runs toward the woods. He's short of breath, but the fear drives him to keep running. The farther he runs, the shorter his breaths become until the fear and lack of oxygen nearly suffocate him. He slows and his legs give way. He crawls toward a nearby puddle of water and stares at his reflection. Suddenly, another face appears beside his in the puddle-Jacobis. The sight surprises him. Jacobi has paled substantially and his features, once handsome, are now barely human. He turns and crawls away from him. He then jumps to his feet. He assumes a fighting stance. Malum res And what will you fight me with? You have no magical abilities and no sword. You are defenseless. The Jacobi faces an open palm toward Tiberius. A ball of energy forms in the Malum Ress hand. Malum res (CONTD) Sino! Tiberius dodges the ball of energy. Tiberius smirks. TiberIUS You forget that I know you, Jacobi--your strengths and your weaknesses. Jacobis gaze narrows. Malum res You are in no position to mock me. Tiberius arches an eyebrow. TiberIUS But I am. Jacobi turns. He's faced with over a dozen monks ready to fight. TiberIUS (CONTD) I may not have magical abilities, but they do. You're no fool. Even with your abilities, you are no match for over a dozen sorcerers. Move on. You have no hope of winning this battle. 0002000009F10001B0799EB,Jacobi glares at him. Malum res Dont think this is over. Jacobi turns and pushes his way through the crowd, then leaves the monastery. INT. MONASTARY - NEXT MORNING Tiberius stands at the gates holding a travel bag. He talks with an old, balding average height, average build man. Man Are you sure you won't stay, my son? You are safe here. Tiberius shakes his head. Tiberius I cannot. My beloved's life is in danger. Given his attempt on my life, I dont know what hell do to her. The man nods. Man Good luck, my son. Tiberius inclines his head and exits the monastery. EXT. MELKESH'S AUNT'S HOME - LATER Melkesh approaches her aunt's home carrying two buckets of water from the river. She exits the forest and freezes, her eyes wide and her mouth agape in horror. She drops the buckets that she's carrying. She stares at the burned hut and the charred body lying outside. She turns and runs in the opposite direction. EXT. FOREST - LATER Tiberius walks through the woods, not looking where he's going. FOREST - MELKESH'S POV Melkesh runs through the forest sobbing. FOREST - TIBERIUS'S POV Something collides with him. He looks down to see Melkesh sprawed on the forest floor. Surprised, he helps her up. TiberIUS Are you all right? She throws her arms about his waist and sobs into his shoulder. MeLKESH M-my aunther house was burned and-and I t-think she's d-dead and my p-parents are gone and TiberIUS Shh. It'll be all right. We'll find your parents. EXT plains - LATER Tiberius and Melkesh see a village in the distance. The buildings stand tall, their white rock design contrasting with the bluish-purple of the mountains in the distance. Their gazes lock and they smile. They then run toward the village. EXT. VILLAGE - LATER They enter the village to find men rushing about to put out fires, women clutching the motionless bodies of their children, and orphaned toddlers crying out in anguish. Melkesh rushes forward and faces an open palm toward a pool of water at the center of the village. MeLKESH Unda vultus! A bubble of water forms and Melkesh throws it toward one of the buildings that's burning. The bubble breaks and the liquid runs over the building, extinguishing the flames. She does the same for several other buildings. Tiberius hears a child crying and turns to see a horse racing straight for her. He runs toward her and scoops her up, then continues running until they're out of the horses path. The child screams louder and Tiberius hugs her tightly to his chest, rocking and singing soothingly. 0002000006760001BA64670,EXT. VILLAGE - LATER By this time, the panic has faded and all of the fires have been extinguished. An older woman approaches Tiberius and Melkesh and smiles. Old woman I cannot begin to thank you for your help. TiberIUS Who did this to you? The older woman bows her head. Old woman Mensorcerers with dark cloaks. TiberIUS Did you see any faces? She nods. Old woman Just one. He's the leader, I think. MelKESH What does he look like? Old woman Horribly disfigured, as though his skin had been slashed with a knife. Tiberius (v.O.) Jacobi. TiberIUS (CONTD) What else can you tell us about these men? Old woman They had two prisoners with them. A man and a woman. Old woman (CONTD) Both looked very much like your friend. Melkesh's eyes widen in horror and she turns to Tiberius. MeLKESH They have my parents. Melkesh turns and runs to leave the village. Tiberius makes to go after her, but the older woman grabs his arm. He turns. She has a slightly glazed look in her eyes. Old woman Don't let her fight, boy, unless you wish to watch her die. Tiberius stares at her wide-eyed for a few moments. She releases his arm and he runs after Melkesh. EXT. plains - SUNSET They approach a hill, at the bottom of which a small valley sits. Below, a camp within the valley thrums with activity. A man shouts muffled orders. They turn. Two adults are brought out of a hut struggling. Melkesh gasps quietly. They're her parents. Jacobi emerges. He is barely recognizable now, his eyes and nose shrunken and sunk into his face. His transformation is complete. Melkesh and Tiberius move carefully closer so that they can hear what's being said. 00020000070E0001C0D4708,Malum res Where is she? The man and woman know, but remain still and silent in defiance. The Malum Res faces an open palm toward them and a ball of energy forms in his palm. Malum res (CONTD) Sino! The ball of energy strikes the man and woman. Both fall to the ground, screaming and writhing in pain. Malum res (CONTD) Desino. The man and woman still, panting for breath. Malum res (CONTD) Where is she?! This pattern of torture and interrogate continues for nearly a half hour. Several times, Melkesh attempts to run from her hiding place to their rescue, but Tiberius holds her back. MeLKESH Let me go. I have to stop him! Tiberius shakes his head. TiberIUS He'll only kill you and that won't help save your parents. There's nothing you can do. She's forced to watch her parents be tortured, tears streaming down her face. Frustrated, the Malum Res faces a palm toward each of her parents and a red ball of energy forms in his palm. Malum res Abeo! The red ball of energy strikes the man and woman. The man's and woman's bodies drop to the ground, contorted and lifeless. Melkesh struggles not to scream in anguish. She jerks to her feet and runs away from the camp. Tiberius curses quietly and runs after her. A brief grimace of anguish crosses Jacobis face as he looks down at the bodies in front of him, a pain he quickly hides when he notices the odd glances from his followers. He turns and strides toward his hut. EXT. FOREST - LATER She stumbles and trips, falling to the ground. Tiberius pins her and she struggles at first. He turns her onto her back and pulls her into his lap. She stops struggling and throws her arms around his neck, then buries her face in his shoulder. Wretched, pained sobs escape her lips. He holds her tight and presses a gentle kiss to her forehead. 00020000089C0001C7DC896,EXT. FOREST - LATER A fire flickers to life and casts the shadows of two figures on opposite sides of the fire onto the dark dirt. Melkesh sits with her knees hugged to her chest as the moonlight shines on her face. The light reveals tear trails and the redness of her eyes. Tiberius sits, his brow furrowed in thought. He glances at Melkesh, his eyes dark and his lips thin with fury. TIBERIUS This obsession of his with the Ashal has gone too far. He's a danger to the peace. MELKESH But how are we going to stop him? We can't do it alone. TIBERIUS We have no choice but to go to the main Guardian camp and hope they will help us. They're the only ones who can stop him. EXT. MAIN GUARDIAN CAMP - A FEW DAYS LATER People mill about the camp. Some women wash clothes while others grind wheat for food. Several men sit around a fire sharpening their blades. Tiberius and Melkesh enter the camp. Everyone stops to watch them as they move toward the large hut at the center of the camp. They exchange worried glances and enter the hut. INT. MAIN GUARDIAN CAMP - COMMUNITY HUT - LATER In the hut, all Guardian camp leaders sit arguing. When Tiberius and Melkesh enter, all fall silent. GUARDIAN 1 Who let these children in here? A man stands, his expression one of surprise. They recognize him as their camp leader, Alaj, from Guardian training. TIBERIUS Master Alaj. MELKESH Master Alaj. ALAJ Melkesh? Tiberius? They nod. Seeing the smile that crosses the man's lips gives Tiberius the courage to speak. TIBERIUS Jacobi, he's ALAJ We know. We were just discussing that. Another man enters the hut and pushes past Tiberius and Melkesh. GUARDIAN 2 Sir. He's gathering an army. Alaj Ready the troops. We attack at dawn. He turns to Tiberius and Melkesh. Alaj (CONTD) Are you here to join our cause? Both nod without hesitation. Alaj grasps both of their hands and begins the initiation. EXT. FOREST - LATER The trees sway slightly as a light evening wind blows through them. The moon shines down and casts an eerie glow upon two people who stand among the trees. Tiberius grasps Melkesh's shoulders. Tiberius You musn't fight tomorrow. MelKESH Why not? TiberIUS You will die. MelKESH I wont die. 000200000BF10001D072BEB,TiberIUS Promise me you won't fight. MelKESH I will do no such thing! TiberIUS Then become my bondmate. MelKESH What?! TiberIUS Our bond will protect you. You have but to call me and I'll be at your side instantly. MeLKESH If I become your bondmate, will you let me fight? TIBerIUS Yes. MelKESH I will, then. EXT. FOREST - LATER Tiberius and Melkesh stand amongst the trees and hold one anothers hands. A Guardian priest stands in front of them. Tiberius With all that I am, I swear to protect you with my blade, to forever be loyal to only you, and to love you beyond this life and the next. MelkesH With all that I am, I swear to defend you, to be forever loyal to only you, and to love you beyond this life and the next. Guardian priest And so your lives are joined as one. Your souls are bound for eternity. Tiberius leans down and presses his lips to Melkeshs. FadE TO black. EXT. GUARDIAN CAMP - alajs hut - later Tiberius enters the small mud hut to find Alaj waiting for him. Alaj motions him forward and Tiberius takes several more steps before sitting on the ground in front of him. TibeRIUS You asked to see me? Alaj Yes. Alaj pulls a necklace from his pocket. On the end of it is a red stone. Alaj (CONTD) You have heard of the Ashal, havent you? TiberIUS Yes. It is the stone Jacobi seeks. Alaj Correct. And I am entrusting you with its care. TIBerIUS Melkesh and I helped Jacobi to search for the stone. How do you know that we wont take it to him? Alaj Your friendship with Jacobi has ended, has it not? TIBERIUS Yes, but what of Melkesh? Alaj She is your wife, isnt she? You are the one she is loyal to now. TiberIUS A bond created so that I can protect her. Though she has learned many spells, she has yet to show the ability to use those spells to their maximum potential. She is a novice. AlAJ I think there is perhaps more to her magical abilities than is obvious to you. I think she is very capable of protecting herself should the need arise. TIBERIUS Then you overestimate her abilities. Tiberius turns and exits the hut. Alaj sighs. EXT. PLAINS OF METESH - DAWN The sun peaks over the eastern horizon and ascends into the sky. Its golden rays cast an almost unnatural glow upon the hills, plains, and mountains. EXT. FOREST OF TESHAL - CONTINUOUS Tiberius gazes out upon the plentiful lands of Aria, which stretch from mountains on the right to sea on the left. DARK CLOUDS hang over the distant peaks. MelKESH Tiberius. He turns. Melkesh stands behind him. She looks concerned. He turns back toward the valley. TIBERIUS You should be resting for the battle. MELKESH As should you be, husband. The two stand in silence for several moments. TIBERIUS Maybe--maybe the old woman is right. MELKESH Dont say you trust the old frauds predictions. TIBERIUS (pauses) I--I see no reason not to heed her warning is all. Melkesh moves to stand in front of him and grasps his face in her hands. This forces him to look her right in the eye. MELKESH I wont die today--nor any other day. I wont die for a good many years. 000200000FAD0001DC5DFA7,TIBERIUS I don't want to be without you. I couldn't go on alone. MELKESH Shh. You won't be without me. I'll always be with you. The two share a passionate kiss. A long horn is blown in the distance and they pull apart. They then turn to look behind them for a moment before their gazes again lock. TIBERIUS The call. Tiberius pulls his sword from its sheath and holds it at his side. MELKESH The battle begins. The two run into the forest and leap over fallen tree branches to reach the battlefield. Cut TO: EXT. THE BATTLEFIELD - LATER As dusk approaches, both sides line up facing one another. The Light Warriors wear white cloaks while the Dark Warriors wear black cloaks. All is silent for several moments. The LEADER of the LIGHT GUARDIANS raises his sword and points it heavenward. LIGHT LEADER Pro Matris Aria! Battle cries erupt amongst the soldiers on both sides and the two armies run straight at one another. Battle cries erupt amongst the soldiers on both sides and the two armies run straight at one another. They meet in a clash of swords and spells in the middle of the field. Time slows. MONTAGE: 1. Tiberius slashing the Dark Warriors with his sword. 2. Melkesh firing spells at Dark Warriors. 3. A woman cradling her dead husband's head in her lap with tears streaming down her face. 4. Several warriors being slashed and cut down. The Light Warriors are winning. They begin to push past enemy frontlines and slaughter every last Dark Warrior within their reach. Cut TO: EXT. BATTLEFIELD - CONTINUOUS [] In a quieter area of the battlefield, the Light Warriors capture the LEADER of the Dark Warriors, the Malum Res. While several of the men hold him with their blades pointed at him, several sorceresses form a circle around the him. They join hands, close their eyes, and begin to chant. NOTE: THIS SCENE IS SPOKEN IN LATIN AND SUBTITLED IN ENGLISH. SORCERESSES Dedo ut Aria medius exsisto vos pro infinitio quod ultra. Nusquam neque nec nemo vadum tribuo vos solvo. Nos redimio vos intus is navitas carcer. Nunquam iterum vadum vos exsisto solvo. SORCERESSES (CONTD) (subtitles) Consigned to the center of the Earth be youfor eternity and beyond. Nothing nor no one shall grant you release. We bind you within this energy prison. Never again shall you be free. END OF SUBTITLES A cage of light forms around the Malum Res, who roars in outrage. The men immediately release him and back away as far as possible, though careful not to break the circle. The sorceresses repeat the chant over and over several times. The bars of the cage glow brighter with each chant until the bars glow so bright that the men have to bring their arms up to shield their eyes. In the blink of an eye, the bright light is gone. The men drop their arms and open their eyes, silent for several long moments. The sorceresses slowly open their eyes and upon discovering the him gone, their hands fall to their sides. The men howl with triumph and embrace one another. EXT. Plains OF Metesh, ARIA (EARTH) - CONTINUOUS Tiberius holds Melkesh as she gasps for breath. It is as he feared. She is mortally wounded. Tiberius removes her hand from the wound in her abdomen. Blood seeps through her clothing. He lays a hand over her wound. TiberIUS The old woman was right. I shouldnt have let you fight. Tears roll down his cheeks. MELKESH I was meant to fight today. I was meant to die today. It is my destinymy fate. TIBERIUS I won't accept that. MELKESH Shh, my love. You must be strong. We will meet again in the next life. It is our destiny. Tiberiuss hand shakes as he slides the chain to which the Ashal is attached over her head and lays the stone gently over the wound. Melkesh releases her last breath and her eyes close. A cry of agony rips from Tiberiuss throat as he clutches at the lifeless body of his bondmate. The stone of the Ashal glows for several moments. TIBERIUS (v.o.) Reservo suus animus. The glow then fades to nothing.
