I think we're lost. EXT. A GAS STATION - MID DAY The gas station is lonely, desolate and in the middle of nowhere along a long, desert two lane highway. CARSON (20s) is putting gas in the tank of a yellow Lamborghini Gallardo while reading a worn hard cover copy of "The House of Leaves." He is handsome in a way that says "I read." VERRA (20s) is leaning on the back end of the car looking down the road, presumably, the way they just came. She is threateningly attractive with dark hair and features and tan skin. CARSON We're not lost. VERRA We might be lost. CARSON We can't--it's a road. It goes one way and the other and it's been like that for the last hundred miles. You can't get lost when you're only option is straight ahead. It's a physical impossibility. VERRA I think we're lost. CARSON We're not--what are you doing? VERRA I'm going to buy a map. CARSON You know there's, like, a four thousand dollar navigation system in that car. VERRA A four thousand dollar navigation system neither one of us knows how to use. CARSON Instruction manual's in the glove compartment. Verra ducks in the passenger side of the car, grabs the manual, and slides it across the roof to Carson. VERRA Knock yourself out. CARSON I was hoping you would read to me. VERRA And I was hoping when you said "let's take a trip" you meant by train through Europe or Asia or at least a cruise and not a trek by car through the ugliest-ass armpit part of a democratic experiment gone to hell in a handcart. CARSON You feel better getting that off your chest? VERRA I think we're lost. Verra walks toward the Convenience Store as Carson's cell phone rings. He finishes pumping and paying for the gas as he talks. CARSON Yeah? INT. OFFICE - MID DAY GEORGE (60s) is on the other end of the phone. He is a thin, white haired older man with a dignified air in a finely tailored black suit. He is walking through the office space of a publishing house followed by his secretary, KAREN (30s). There's just some holdings that are made reference too that aren't accounted for and it's taking the lawyers some time to track things down. (to Karen) In my hand? KAREN The Wilbrow briefing. Karen exits. GEORGE (to Carson) I also have to say that this was not exactly the best time to-- INTERCUT - Between EXT. and INT. CARSON How about you and I switch places and then you can tell me about the best time to do anything. INT. CONVENIENCE STORE - MID DAY Verra enters and begins scanning the isles. A cat eyes her suspiciously. It all looks dusty and she sees a long overdue sell by date, shudders, and moves on to take a 20OZ. bottle of Sprite and a bottle of Evian from a cooler. She looks at the map section of the store but it's empty. She attempts to move the cat sitting on a portion of it. Initially the cat appears receptive, but then abruptly hisses, scratches her and scampers off. VERRA Owe. Damn. INT. HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS She heads down a hallway in the back of the store that splits off two ways. A sign on the wall pointing RIGHT indicates the Mens restroom, the storeroom and the exit. A sign pointing LEFT indicates the womens restroom. She takes a LEFT and we linger briefly on the two signs. INT. OFFICE - MID DAY George has now risen off of his desk and is still talking to Carson. GEORGE Carson, the board is trying to be patient, but you're going to have to-- EXT. GAS STATION - MID DAY Carson paces back and forth along the side of the road. CARSON I love it when you refer to the board as if it's a single minded entity with emotions. Does the board get hungry or sad or-- INTERCUT - Between EXT. and INT. GEORGE You're going to have to work with these people. There's a reason why your father left them with an interim authority-- INT. WOmens RESTROOM - CONTINUOUS Were in the dark and hear fumbling, then Verra finds the switch and the lights snap on. She rinses her hands in the sink but when she goes for the soap dispenser its not on the right where she had been reaching, but now on the left. Strange. She finishes washing her hands and turns to the towel dispenser to find someone has carved Jesus is lord onto the front of it. Its also out of paper. Verra sighs. Shes coming from the RIGHT and the signs on the wall are REVERSED, which shouldnt make sense but she doesnt seem to notice. A scratching sound has garnered most of her attention. We trail along behind as she approaches it. INT. CONVENIENCE STORE - COnTINUOUS We come around the corner slowly to reveal the source of the noise: The STORE CLERK, a short, scrawny and odd-looking young man, is writing in a book. Verra seems a little surprised. VERRA Im sorry, I didnt know anyone was in here. He doesnt look up and continues writing. Verra grabs the Sprite and Evian bottles off the shelf she left them on, approaches the counter and places her items in front of him but he makes no motion to check her out. VERRA Hi, (beat) Do you have any maps or travel guides to the area? I didn't see any He simply stares at her, uncomprehending. She glances down at what hes been writing in. Its a book of mazes, half of them completed. VERRA You like mazes? The clerk smiles, only slightly. EXT. GAS STATION - MID DAY Carson and George continue. CARSON I mean what would you have me do? Okay? What can I do for you, George? INT. OFfice - MID DAY George loosens his tie. GEORGE Stop. Antagonizing. The people who are trying to help you. (beat) Think about this. When did you get so angry? When did you get so cold? INTERCUT - Between EXT. and INT CARSON (beat) I appreciate your calling to tell me about the book. GEORGE You dont have to put this distance between us. We all remember this wry, yet charming and blithe young man and were all waiting to have him back. You're not alone. CARSON I'm standing on the edge of a highway with no more than 2 souls breathing in 20 miles of air. I am very much alone right now, George, and I have been standing at this highway for a large share of my yet brief life. GEORGE Not one of your better metaphors. She sets the sprite bottle on the car in front of Carson, who picks it up and wipes the condensation it left off the car with his sleeve. VERRA I think I might have broke the guy in there. VERRA How's that instruction manual read? CARSON You mean the parts that aren't inexplicably only in Italian? VERRA (beat) I do. CARSON I think I'm getting somewhere. You see that triangle type thing? Carson points to the navigation screen. VERRA It's an arrow head. CARSON It's--whatever--it's green. This green thing is us and the black line is, of course, the highway. And that's all I've got right now but I can tell there's an index, so that's very encouraging. The diner appears as though it's seen few renovations since it's inception in the 50's. Verra and Carson get out and scan their surroundings before heading towards the rickety doors. CARSON Excellent. Let's drink the water immediately. VERRA You like to joke, but I'm slipping something into your tea as soon as you're in the restroom. CARSON Remind me why we stopped here again? VERRA Your impending nervous breakdown. CARSON A bout of dysentery from the local well at shanty town's hot spot is really gonna' help stave that off. VERRA Would you come on? Carson glances around at the bleak horizon again and follows Verra towards the door. INT. DINER - MID DAY Carson and Verra are seated at a booth in the middle of the diner by the window. The other PATRONS eye them with suspicious interest. They are obviously out of place. The Waitress puts down a cup of tea in front of Carson. Verra looks at him intently and waits. CARSON I don't discriminate. VERRA You don't. CARSON What's that supposed to mean? VERRA You shut everybody out. Verra pulls a large, bound stack of computer paper, obviously a book manuscript that has seen a lot of use, from her satchel. VERRA When are you going to finish this? VERRA I don't understand why you're so-- CARSON Because-- Carson hits slams his hand on the table and then reacts immediately apologetic, not used to his own violence. CARSON (to one of the patrons) Hi. INT. ALCOVE - COnTINUOUS Around the corner is a small alcove with two doors for the men's and women's rest rooms that is out of sight of the rest of the diner. I know what I'm supposed to feel and how I'm supposed to react to things but it doesn't change my actual responses. Verra moves away from him and he follows her around the alcove. VERRA Then take the pills. Let someone help you. CARSON It's not that easy. VERRA You're not letting it be. CARSON You're making it sound like flipping a switch and it's more complicated than that. As we follow and get a full and sustained view of the restaurant it is clear that all of the patrons and staff have collapsed. Carson and Verra approach the couple sitting in the closest booth, a WOMAN and MAN (40s), dressed in plaid flannel shirts and work clothing. Very slowly and cautiously Carson reaches down to check for a pulse on the man's neck. VERRA (whispering) Careful, careful. Carson takes a breath, checks the man's pulse. CARSON (whispering) Nothing. Jesus. VERRA (whispering) What about her? Carson checks an older woman in the next booth. He shakes his head. VERRA (whispering) I doesn't make any sense-no one even looks injured. They continue to cautiously move down the isle towards the door, scanning everything as they move. CARSON (whispering) Told you we shouldn't drink the water. VERRA (whispering) Why are we whispering? EXT. DAED'S DINER - MID DAY Carson and Verra cautiously walk towards the car. VeRRA You seen anything that could have made that sound? Carson stops and scans the horizon, turning in nearly a half circle. Verra notices that he's stopped. VERRA What are you doing? Cmon CARSON It's the strangest it just seems wrong. VERRA What the hell-- CARSON I feel like when we went into the place we were on the other side or VERRA Look at the landscape. How could you tell? Carson sighs and shakes his head. CARSON I dunno. Just VERRA Come on. They get into the Lamborghini and quickly drive back down the farm road away from the diner. INT. LAMBORGHINI COCKPIT - MID DAY Verra takes her phone from her ear and sets it down on the center tunnel. VERRA Still not working. Shit. CARSON Maybe when we get back to the highway we'll be back on the network. VERRA What the fuck just happened? CARSON I don't know. VERRA How could that many people all just... CARSON I don't know. VERRA I mean, we didn't even hear anything. You'd think we'd at least hear the impact when bodies dropped... but... nothing. And that noise... CARSON How long have we been driving now? Carson briefly fiddles with the navigation system controls. VERRA There's still no signal. Something's not right. Carson hands her his phone. CARSON Try mine. Verra does so. VERRA No good. (beat) Both were fine earlier. I don't get it. They pause, contemplating what to do. Carson "zeros" the odometer. VERRA Okay. I see two options. CARSON Yes. VERRA Option one: That gas station we stopped at wasn't too far back. We go there. Call from a land line. CARSON Option two: we make a right turn. Get the fuck outta' here. VERRA We can't just leave them-I mean we didn't check everyone. What if- CARSON I know. But that sound VERRA Yeah. Carson, looks pensive, thinking. He glances from the instrument panel to Verra and back. EXT. THE CAR ON THE HIGHWAY - MID DAY The Lamborghini sits, motionless at the highway turn off for a moment. Then, the LEFT turn signal comes on. EXT. THE GAS STATION - LATER The Lamborghini pulls into the parking lot and parks. Carson and Verra get out and head for the convenience store. As Verra opens the door Carson stops and turns around, scanning the horizon. He then follows her. INT. CONVENIENCE STORE - COnTINUOUS Verra and then Carson tentatively make their way into the store. We follow Carson as he heads down the hallway. INT. HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS The sound of Verra dialing the phone can be heard in the background. CARSON Hello? Sir? He moves farther down the hallway, takes a left and stops at the door to the mens restroom. Carson knocks. No response. CARSON Sir? Carson grabs the doorknob, and then stops. Doesn't appear as though it's been cleaned in a while, but empty. We swing around to see Carson as he pauses at his reflection in the mirror There's some sort of vague shadow behind him, as if it's been there the whole time but has just now snapped into focus. INT. HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS Carson cautiously walks down to the end of the hallway and opens a door marked Storeroom. Employees only. INT. STORE ROOM - CONTINUOUS The room is cluttered and claustrophobic. The only light source appears to be what bleeds in from the hallway and a small window in the exit door across the room. CARSON Is anyone there? Carson tries a switch on the wall, but whatever it goes to isnt the lights. He then pulls out his cell phone and uses the light from the screen to slowly search the isles, one by one. CARSON Yeah, brilliant... The first two isles have nothing of interest, just bottles, candy and cardboard boxes. When Carson checks the third... CARSON (mock newscaster) The body of an idiot was discovered today at a highway-- Something darts across the isles width. Carson gasps and jumps back in surprise. He then collects himself, crouches and peers under the shelf, where the thing ran. In the dark he can see a pair of eyes. He inches a little closer and then smiles, feeling silly and relieved. INT. CONVENIENCE STORE - MOMENTS LATER Carson appears from the hallway holding the same cat as earlier. Verra is still on the phone. VERRA (into phone) I understand. No, thank you. She hangs the phone up. CARSON No sign of your mystery clerk. However, I did find a stowaway. VERRA Thats the bastard that scratched me. CARSON Darted right out in front of me. I almost hit the ceiling. VERRA She looks like Phoebe. CARSON In that they're both cats? VERRA Well markings aside, same color, same eyes. Whatever happened to her? CARSON Phoebe? Verra nods. CARSON She died. VERRA Holy shit. They both rush for the door. EXT. THE GAS STATION - CONTINUOUS Carson and Verra rush out, scanning the horizon. CARSON What the fuck is that? VERRA It sounded further away this time. Whatever it is. Carson continues to search the horizon, walking to the edge of the road. CARSON ...Like it came from all around... He turns around. CARSON What are you doing? He is older and has a weathered face that suggests many years in the sun, patrolling the same stretch of highway. Jed is smaller and has a wiry frame. He is a little awkward physically and moves and speaks with a hesitation. ROBERTS You the two who called in? Roberts approaches them with a jaunty and casual walk, thumbs tucked into his belt, a toothpick barely dangling from the corner of his mouth. Jed follows, nervous. CARSON (under his breath) What, did you call a police station from the 60s? VERRA Yes. We were at this diner and we went around to the rest rooms and when we came back-- ROBERTS Ma'am, slow down. LABORGHINI COCKPIT - CONTINUOUS Verra is still fussing with the phones. Carson is driving. CARSON I zeroed the odometer before we headed back to the gas station from the turn off. VERRA Okay. CARSON It was 13.2 miles. Now it reads 26.6. VERRA So... CARSON So where did the extra two tenths of a mile come from? EXT. FARM ROAD - MID DAY The Lamborghini and the Patrol car drive along the farm road. INT. LABORGHINI COCKPIT - CONTINUOUS VERRA We've been driving way too long now. CARSON You believe me? JED (offering helpfully) Did you maybe t-take the wrong road? CARSON No, this was the only one. First we came to. ROBERTS Look, I've had about enough of driving around out here looking for a diner that may or may not exist, full of people that may or may not be dead. ROBERTS Maybe one of you two wants to explain this to me? CARSON We keep telling you we don't know what's happening anymore than you do. JED There's no way we could've passed this place coming up here. VERRA We know. We dont... CaRSON Where are the cars? RoBERTS What? CARSON Where are the cars--the patrons cars. Where are they? VERRA Thats right... RoBERTS Care to fill me in? CARSON When we got here the diner was full. There were cars all over the parking lot. ROBERTS Maybe your bodies came to and left. VERRA No. These people werent passed out, we checked pulses, they were dead. ROBERTS Well I dont know what you expect me to believe: that a bunch of people all dropped dead and then drove away? DAED'S DINER - CONTINUOUS It is the exact same diner as before with one major difference: It is deserted. There are no bodies on the floor or in the booths. It is completely vacant. CARSON Then the distance from the turn off to the gas station should be the exact same as from the gas station to the turn off--its the same stretch of road. He illustrates, using his props. CARSON But when we drove back with you to the turn off we drove two tenths of a mile further than when we came. VERRA Its a physical impossibility, but it happened. GAS STATION - LATER The sun has set now, as the two cars pull into the gas station parking lot, a island of light in the darkness. All four people get out. ROBERTS Jed, go ahead and raise dispatch. Jed ducks back into the patrol car and attempts to work the radio. JED It's still just static. ROBERTS What? Let me see that? He stomps over to the driver's side of the patrol car and snatches the radio from Jed. ROBERTS Get out. Jed hops out and Roberts sits down. Verra scans above her. Carson is trying his cell phone in conjunction with the laptop again. VERRA (to Carson) These lights werent on earlier... Roberts also fiddles with the radio, but it doesn't work. He tosses it down in disgust and then gets out of the car glaring at Carson and Verra. ROBERTS Well, I suppose we'll just have to call it in. Roberts goes to the door of the convenience store and enters, leaving Carson and Verra alone in the parking lot with Jed. VERRA (to Jed) You've got to talk to him. Somethings not right here. Hey Jed, whatd that map say the name of that diner was? Verra rushes around the counter and follows Carson as he crawls down the hallway towards the storage room. INT. HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS They look up to see that they are preceded by the cat, who seems to be waiting for them outside the door. VERRA Here? Carson Yeah They enter into... INT. STORE ROOM - CONTINUOUS The store room door cracks open and the cat, followed by Verra and Carson slide through. Its even darker in here with the only light source coming from the exit door window. VerRA Hes bound to check back here. CARSON I know. VERRA Does the door lock? Carson checks. CARSON Not from this side. VERRA Damn it. CaRSON We can try to hide. Find some corner or something. Stay in there for hours until they give up-- VERRA But theyll know we havent left-- the car. CARSON Or... GAS STATION - CONTINUOUS The commotion of the exit door being thrown open has attracted Jeds attention. He starts walking towards the noise and then recognizes Carson and Verra. JED Hey! St-stop! We just want to-- Carson and Verra start to run away from him but the problem is hes between them and the car. They both look at each other, as if simultaneously grasping it. Roberts stumbles out of the side entrance, looking a bit woozy and grasping his head. This slows Jed down. He doesnt know whether to aid him or commit to his pursuit. Roberts offers his advice: RoBERTS Get them god damn it! Fuckin get-- He drops to a knee, but waves Jed on. Carson and Verra grasp hands, and take off into the blackness. Faintly, in the distance we hear Jed and Roberts shouting. CARSON (whispering) Here. Patch of bushes. Carson and Verras forms crawl into a crack in the earth surrounded by brush. EXT. The BrUSH - CoNTINUOUS Vera pricks herself. VERRA (whispering) Ouch! Thorns... CARSON Yeah. They cram themselves into the crack trying to be as small as possible. Roberts and Jeds voice sound as if theyre getting closer. Carson and Verra try to stifle their hard breathing. EXT. ThE BLACKNESS - CONTINUOUS We see blackness. Then, two tiny dashes of light appears. They must be close now. RoBERTS (O.S.) God damn it! Thats twice youve let them get away! INTERCUT - between EXT. and EXT. Jed (O.S.) Are you sure youre okay? I-- ROBERTS (O.S.) Im fine! Find them! Their lights fade die. RoBERTS Worthless! Cant see shit with these things. JED Got some larger ones back at the car. Cloud covers blocking the moon. Shouldnt there be more stars this far away from city lights? Carson looks up, as well. EXT. NIGHT SKY - CONTINUOUS There are few stars. The cloud cover is thick and swirling. Every once in awhile a flash of lightning reveals a black curtain. EXT. The BLACKNESS - lateR We can barely make out the forms of our two protagonists walking wearily. VerRA How long has it been? Carson checks his phone. CarsON Ten minutes. See anything? VERRA Ha. CARSON We should be headed back but... VERRA When we were running I got so turned around... Verra stops walking. VERRA Hang on. CARSON What? VERRA The ground here is different. Carson bends down and turns on the backlight to his phone illuminating the edge of some asphalt. Lightning flashes, showing the scene: They are standing at the edge of a farm road. Across from them is Daeds Diner. CARSON My god. A ROAR strikes out from close behind them. Then gunshots. Two. Verra shouts. They break into a run, heading for the diner. INT. DAEDS DINER - CONTINUOUS 000200000A2200012D6CA1C,The door to the diner is jerked open and Carson and Verra pile in. They stay low, and scramble into a booth next to the window and freeze there. Silence. Their breathing slows as they strain, listening for anything. Verra Anything? Carson lifts his head up to check out the window. The lightning strikes again, revealing nothing except the road and the black expanse beyond. CaRSON No. He lays back down again. Verra shivers. CARSON Jesus, youre freezing. He slides out and moves around to the edge of the bar. VERRA Where are you... CARSON Gonna see if theres any blankets... anything. Keep a lookout. Carson peers around the bar. The lightning snaps. In the flash he sees nothing out of the ordinary. Nothing helpful. He makes his way towards a doorway to... INT. Kitchen/Storage room - CONTINUOUS Carson pauses, waiting for the lightning. When it flashes it reveals a form next to the back door. Carson jumps, startled, but its only a jumpsuit on a hanger. False alarm. He moves further into the room and the next time the lightning goes off he sees something he likes on a set of storage shelves. Behind him the light illuminates a small hand sink. Next to it is a paper towel dispenser with the words Jesus is lord scrawled on it. INT. DaeDS DINER - MOMENTS LATER Carson rejoins Verra, still hunched in the booth, carrying a few large sheets. VerRA Blankets? CARSON Table cloths, I think. He huddles up next to her and covers them both with the cloths. Then rubs her arms trying to warm them both. VERRA Better. EXT. DAEDS DINER - CONTINUOUS The lightning flashes showing the diner and the parking lot, then everything goes black. INT. DAEDS DINER - LaTER A little color has returned to Carson and Verra, but they also look tired. Theyre now slumped across from one another. CARSON I have a confession to make. VeRRA Uh huh. CARSON Because, well we might die and theres fuck all else to do... And it seems like this is the sort of situation... VERRA Yeah. CARSON I wasnt there for my mother. When she died. VERRA Carson, you were at the hospital all the time, you-- CARSON No, I mean... This was towards the end. After my dad had--I was the only one. And, I mean, this was near the end, she was in and out. In the next flash of lightning we see that the form by the door is no longer just a jumpsuit. Someone is there. INT. DAEDS DINER - CoNTINUOUS Verra has torn a few strips off one of the table cloths and is attempting to tie off a long gash on the outside of Jeds arm. Hes still weak and shaken. VeRRA What happened? Carson enters carrying the dish rags. Jed We were looking for you and our flashlight went out so we were trying to find our way back and got lost. And then... There was just this thing there with us. I mean you could feel it getting closer. And it made that sound. It was so close--just right there. I saw--I think I saw these two slits of light--like eyes... Verra presses the dish rags over the wound, soaking up blood. JED I felt it next to me and Dennis shot at it a couple of times. It swiped at me and we both started running. I didnt know what to do. I saw this place and just thought I could hide. VERRA Its okay now. I think we can stop the bleeding. CARSON Wheres Roberts? Jed I dont know. I tried calling for him but we got separated. A gun cocks. Hearing it Carson and Verra spin around. In the flash of lightning we see Roberts standing in the doorway. Everyone looks around confused but Roberts confusion quickly changes back to anger as he turns on Caron and Verra. ROBERTS Thats some trick. CarsON Its not a-- He tries to get up but Roberts kicks him in the shoulder, knocking him back down. ROBERTS (to Jed) Cuff 'em. Jed hesitates, unsure of what to do or what is happening. Roberts threatens him with the gun. ROBERTS I said fucking cuff them! VERRA Don't do this Jed. You don't have to do this... Jed pulls out two pairs of hand cuffs. He cuffs Carsons hands behind his back and Verras wrist to the rubber Gasoline pump hose. ROBERTS How are you doing this!? CARSON Were not. Listen to us! ROBERTS No, I think I've done about as much of that as I'm gonna' do. On your knees-on your fucking knees. Roberts forces Carson to his knees and then jerks the Lamborghini keys out of his pocket. ROBERTS We're gonna' get to the bottom of this right fucking now. He circles around the Lamborghini and tries to open the trunk, as if it were in the rear. He fails and becomes frustrated. ROBERTS Wheres the trunk on of this piece of shit? CARSON Listen to me. After everything youve seen today-- Roberts approaches Carson. ROBERTS Wheres the fuckin trunk? CARSON If its not in the front... ROBERTS Well you're pretty smart college boy. He strikes Carson across the face with his gun, knocking him to the ground. Verra screams and begins crying. VERRA Stop it, stop it! We didn't do anything. We didn't do- ROBERTS And I told you I'm the one who'll decide that! (to Jed) Can you shut her up!? Jed attempts to quiet Verra down while Roberts opens the trunk. ROBERTS Lets see what we've got here. The trunk space is small but tightly packed with the specially made fitted luggage. Roberts begins to just pull the bags out and toss them on the ground. When the space is empty he checks the interior of the trunk. Then he starts opening the luggage bags one by one, tossing their contents out everywhere. Roberts crosses to Carson and strikes him again, knocking him onto his back. Verra screams. ROBERTS I want fucking answers! I want my radio working! I need that radio! At the same time a lightning bolt strikes the Metal canopy shorting out half the exterior lighting grid and raining sparks down on all of them. Roberts and Jed spin wildly, looking for an attacker. Carson seizes the opening and kicks the gun out of Robert's hand. It drops close to Verra. Roberts goes for the gun but Carson tangles him up with his legs and Roberts trips and falls. Verra stretches the gas rope as far as it will go and grabs the gun before anyone can stop her. She trains it on Roberts and Jed. Carson starts the Lamborghini's engine and takes one last look at Verra. She mouths the word "go" to him. The tires squeal and the Gallardo rips out of the parking lot and down the road. Verra starts to back away but shes still tethered to the gas pump. Roberts is torn about who to pursue. He glances back and forth between the Lamborghini and Verra and he inches towards the patrol car. Verra can't keep the gun trained on both Roberts and Jed and Jed inches closer to her. Roberts starts the car and Verra fires at Roberts, but misses hitting the roof. Jed springs forward, tackling her and knocking the gun out of her hands. The Patrol car takes off after Carson. JED I'm not gonna' hurt you! I'm not gonna' hurt you! Verra screams and struggles relentlessly, Jed pulls his gun. JED Stop it! Stop fighting I'm not gonna'-Shut up! Shut up! Finally Jed punches her in the stomach, doubling her over. He undoes her wrist from the pump and clasps the cuff to her other wrist. He then takes her to the edge of the road and looks down it the way the two cars disappeared. EXT. THE HIGHWAY - COnTINUOUS The Lamborghini races along the highway with the patrol car following behind. The Lamborghini is already pulling away. INT. LAMBORGHINI COCKPIT - CONTINUOUS Carson shifts into 5th gear and presses harder on the accelerator. He glances up at his rear view mirror. EXT. THE HIGHWAY - cONTINUOUS The Lamborghini widens the gap between the two, quickly gaining distance. INT. PATROL CAR COCKPIT - cONTINUOUS Roberts see the Lamborghini pulling away from him and slams his hand on the dashboard while pushing to car well past its red line. 0002000007B900015F3F7B3,ROBERTS Dammit! Dammit! No! EXT. GAS STATION - MOMENTS LATER Jed paces back and forth on the side of the road, obviously frantic. He is still holding his gun out, pin cocked. Verra is sitting on the ground, unsure of how to deal with him. VERRA Please, you have to- JED No! No! Shut up--Shut up. You know this is your--I have a little girl--I have a fianc and now you--you! Jed gestures violently at her with the gun and Verra draws back. She then attempts to get up and reach out to him to calm him down. VERRA Listen-- Jed jumps back pointing the gun at her and Verra freezes. JED Don't touch me! Sit there, sit--sit--just sit there! Jed rushes forward and thrusts Verra back down onto the ground by her shoulder. JED Don't fucking do anything! Jed rolls her onto her stomach and puts his knee in her back and his hand against the side of her head. As he draws his hand back there is a moment when his fingers run through her hair and he slows, seemingly fascinated. He stops moving so wildly and runs his fingers through her hair again, slower. Verra feels this, closes her eyes and shivers. Jed then backs up and up and off of her putting his hand on her hip and touching the exposed skin between her shirt and belt line as he does. He is then back to being frantic. He looks down the road one way and then the other. JED I can't--I don't know which way is--This is all your fault, you have to come here and make me- There is another ROAR which only agitates Jed more. JED What the fuck? What the fuck is that? INT. LAMBORGHINI COCKPIT - CONTINUOUS Carson is still driving, he hears the sound too. EXT. GAS STATION - COnTINUOUS Verra starts to cry. Another deafening ROAR comes from all around them. INT. LAMBORGHINI COCKPIT - COnTINUOUS Carson, having heard the next one as well, looks around. EXT. GAS STATION - CONTINUOUS Jed spins wildly, attempting to look down both directions of the highway at once. JED What the fuck- (He sees something) Oh Shit! 0002000007D3000166F27CD,Down the road, in the blackness, appear two shining white slits of eyes moving closer at an incredible rate of speed. JED What is that? What the fuck is that? The eyes continue to get closer and a steady growl gets louder. JED Fuck you--fuck you! Jed lifts his gun and fires into the blackness at the two eyes. INT. LAMBROGHINI COCKPIT - COnTINUOUS A bullet hits the driver's side view mirror. Carson flinches. EXT. GAS STATION - COnTINUOUS Jed fires another shot at the pair of eyes. Verra jumps up and attempts to stop him. VERRA Stop! Verra makes Jed's next shot go far wide. He wraps her up, pushes her away from him, and slams the heel of the gun into the side of her head, dropping her to the ground. JED What the fuck are you doing? Jed raises his gun and fires again at the eyes, which are now right on top of them. INT. LAMBORGHINI COCKPIT - COnTINUOUS The bullet hits the windshield in between the passenger and driver's side seat. Carson swerves. EXT. GAS STATION - cONTINUOUS The Lamborghini narrowly avoids hitting Jed and continues on down the highway. INT. LAMBORGHINI COCKPIT - cONTINUOUS Carson yanks up on the emergency break and spins the wheel all the way to the right. EXT. GAS STATION - cONTINUOUS The Lamborghini does a four wheel drift and eventually comes to a halt facing the way it just came. Another roar is heard and another set of eyes appear where the last set had just come from. INT. PATROL CAR COCKPIT - cONTINUOUS Roberts is still pushing the engine as hard as it will go. ROBERTS There you are you mother-- EXT. GAS STATION - cONTINUOUS Confused and crazed, Jed raises his gun and fires his last rounds at the new set of approaching eyes. INT. PATROL CAR COCKPIT - cONTINUOUS Two of the bullets shatter through the windshield and hit Roberts in the neck and chest. He grabs his throat as blood spatters everywhere. EXT. GAS STATION - cONTINUOUS Jed is unable to get out of the way of the swerving patrol car. It barrels into him, killing him instantly. 000200000BA600016EBFBA0,EXT. LAMBORGHINI - cONTINUOUS Carson opens the door to the Lamborghini and looks down the road at Verra. CARSON (shouting out to her) Are you there? Are you alright? EXT. GAS STATION - cONTINUOUS Verra is holding the side of her head. She stumbles to get up but manages. VERRA (calling back) I got knocked on the--I think I'm-- A stream of blood trickles from underneath her hand and down the side of her neck. EXT. LAMBORGHINI - cONTINUOUS From Carson's vantage point he sees Verra's form stumble to the ground again. There is then another ROAR, this time louder than all the ones before. Carson flinches, almost instinctively taking cover from something overhead. He then looks back towards Verra. As the roar continues the area outlined by the gas station light quickly slides down the highway and into the distance until it is gone, leaving Carson alone in the blackness with only the headlights of the Lamborghini for illumination. Nothing else is visible. He looks down the road in the direction Vera vanished, makes his mind up and gets back in the car. INT. LAMBORGHINI COCKPIT - cONTINUOUS Carson starts the engine to the car. He zeros the odometer and shifts into gear. EXT. HIGHWAY - cONTINUOUS The Lamborghini squeals its tires and then shoots back down the highway. INT. LAMBORGHINI COCKPIT - mOMENTS LATER The speedometer reads at 150. Carson continues to push it up further. CARSON Come on. Where are you? EXT. HIGHWAY - LATER The Lamborghini creaks to a halt, out of gas. INT. LAMBORGHINI COCKPIT - MOMENTS LATER Carson taps the gas gauge, which is empty. He checks the odometer, then gets out. EXT. HIGHWAY - CONTINUOUS Carson circles the car to the passenger side, opens the door and pulls out Verra's satchel. He reaches behind the seat and comes up with a small flashlight and a black fleece blanket. He wraps the blanket around himself, turns the light on and starts walking in the direction he was driving. It is now so cold he can see his breath. EXT. HIGHWAY - LATER Carson continues walking, sweeping the light from side to side to search both sides of the road. It is uniform and barren. EXT. HIGHWAY - LATER Carson is still walking. The light from his flashlight falters and then goes out, leaving him in total dark. The sound of him tapping the light twice can be heard as can the rustling as he rummages into Verra's satchel. He strikes a match from the matchbook he kept from the diner. It briefly illuminates the area and then goes out. He strikes another match and this time sets fire to a sheet of paper: the first page of his manuscript. Something is immediately visible next to him. Carson cries out and jumps back, then recovers. It is the metal leg to a green road sign. In one direction is an Arrow and Highway 86 East Entrance, back the way he came Highway 86 West Exit. He falls to his knees and pauses, contemplating for a long time. He has now skipped to a certain portion of the manuscript and is reading it by the light the flames provide. CARSON (V.O.) It was the first time Id seen her in two years, since I started driving. When I'd picked her up from the airport that day I'd had What's the Story (Morning Glory)? in my CD player. The minute she recognized it she immediately backed up to what was coincidently my favorite track on the album as well, "Don't Look Back in Anger." At the time the immediate reflex she had to control the music in the car had stuck me. It was as if there was an understanding that we shared the space as opposed to her simply being a guest in a place that was exclusively mine. It would have been easier for me to simply pass the gesture off as presumptuous and supercilious, had there not been something so good natured about it-so well intentioned. With the little gasp of recognition she came across as so genuine that it was disarming. She wasn't this person who had just dared to reach out and fuss with my radio controls in my car, but someone who was re-discovering an instant similarity-a familiarity-an instant connection, and wanted to share it with me. EXT. HIGHWAY - LATER Carson is still walking. He stumbles in a sort of a trance and has come to the very last page. He lets the fire die on the second to last one. BLACK We hear him take a breath and fumble with the matchbook. EXT. HIghWAY - COnTINUOUS The minute he sets the last page on fire its light reveals Verra. Overcome he lays down next to her and checks her head. She is breathing but looks cold. Not daring move her and not knowing what else to he wraps himself around her and pulls the blanket over both of them for warmth. BLACK A phone begins to ring. EXT. GAS STATION - Morning Carson jumps awake at the sound of the phone, pulling the blanket from over his head. Verra is right next to him and behind them is the gas station. The Lamborghini is also there. Its door is open. Carson gently shakes Verra's shoulder to wake her. CARSON Hello? George!? INT. GEORGE'S OFFICE - MORNING George is still in the same clothes at his desk. GEORGE Thank god! We've been worried sick! I haven't left the office! I called the state police, highway patrol, hospitals... EXT. GAS STATION - Morning As the conversation with George continues, Verra wakes up and Carson hands her the phone. Their voices fade out as we focus back in on the convenience store window. The Clerk watches them. He smiles, slightly. INT. CARSON'S APARTMENT - A WEEK LATER Carson sits at a modern, dark cherry wood desk typing on a new Apple laptop in an sumptuously appointed apartment. He still has a few scrapes and bruises but looks healthy. The sound of cooking can be heard in the kitchen and Verra approaches him with a towel thrown over her shoulder and a wooden spoon in her hand. VERRA Taste this. She offers him the spoon. He tastes it. CARSON Second best Vodka sauce in all of-- VERRA Second best? CARSON Little place called Fedrico's by Circle in the Square. VERRA Shut up. Verra walks back to the kitchen but calls out to him. We slowly move in on Carson. VERRA (O.S.) George should be here soon. He's bringing someone new. I think we'll like her. CARSON That's good to hear. He finishes typing and looks at the screen satisfied. VERRA (O.S.) You finish the last chapter? CARSON No. VERRA (O.S.) Then what? CARSON I think it's gonna' be the beginning of something new. Carson gets up, leaving us.
