Alex Van Helsing: Vampire Rising by Jason Henderson

Jason Henderson, author of The Sword of Dracula, (you can read a script excerpt here) has a new series – Alex Van Helsing. The first in the series, Alex Van Helsing: Vampire Rising by Jason Henderson, comes out today from HarperCollins.

Fourteen-year-old Alex has no idea that he’s descended from the world’s most famous vampire hunter, but that changes fast when he arrives at Glenarvon Academy and confronts two vampires in his first three days.

Turns out Glenarvon isn’t the only school near Lake Geneva. Hidden deep underground lies an ancient university for vampires called the Scholomance. And the deadly vampire clan lord known as Icemaker? You might say he’s a visiting professor.

When two of Alex’s friends are kidnapped by Icemaker, it’s up to Alex to infiltrate the Scholomance and get them back – alive. Assisted by the Polidorium, a top-secret vampire-hunting organization with buried ties to the Van Helsings, Alex dodges zombies, bullets, and lots – and lots – of fangs on his way to thwarting Icemaker’s plans and fulfilling his family destiny.

Sam Mills’ The Money Tree

Sam Mills, long time supporter of SimplyScripts, has a new book out available on Kindle, The Money Tree.

Set in the wilds of Western North Carolina, the story turns on two teen brothers’ chance discovery of a drug dealers’ money drop in the knothole of a tree. The impoverished boys enjoy the “fruit” of “the money tree” until they are caught by the mafiosi whose money it is. The boys narrowly escape, setting off a wild, downriver chase through the trackless Green River Wilderness – a chase that pits unarmed country boys and armed-to-the-teeth city men in a “guerrilla” war to the death.

Over the Beach: US Army Amphibious Operations in the Korean War

over-the-beach_coverOver the Beach: US Army Amphibious Operations in the Korean War

Yes, you are right. This has nothing to do with scripts or screenwriting.

If you are a historian or fan of military history you might find this of interest.

My father, at the behest of the Combat Studies Institute, has written the definitive history of US Army amphibious operations during the Korean War. Chapter two has a great overview of Army amphibious warfare from pre-American Revolutionary war to the modern era. At over 500 pages it may be a little thick for most folks, tho toward page 435 there are some neat pictures of landing ships and craft used during the Korean War.

Over The Beach is a free PDF download available at the Combat Studies Institute. – Don

We interrupt your regular programming…

…to introduce a new audio book, Playing For Keeps by Mur Lafferty.

Playing for Keeps, launching November 1st, …tells the story of Keepsie Branson, a bar owner in the shining metropolis of Seventh City. Keepsie and her friends live among egotistical heroes and manipulative villains, and manage to fall directly in the middle as people with powers, but who just aren’t strong enough to make a difference. Or that’s what they’ve been told. As the city begins to melt down, it’s hard to tell who are the good guys and who are the bad guys.

Playing for Keeps will be a unique podcast experience: you have the ability to subscribe to just the audio version of the novel or you can subscribe to the “PfK Experience”, where you will receive in the feed a PDF of the episode including art, links to content you can?t get on the audio feed, and a short supplemental podcast called “Stories of the Third Wave”.

Check out the site Playing For Keeps. The first espisode is available at Playing for Keeps.

Mur Lafferty is a North Carolina based writer who has written numerous short stories like my personal favorite, the funny and touching I Look Forward to Remembering You as well as the audionovel series Heaven.

Nosferatu transcript and a few unproduced scripts

On the unproduced scripts page there are five new or revised scripts up for your reading pleasure.

On Public Domain Torrents I ran across the movie Nosferatu as a free download (or you can watch it streaming). You can also read an excellent transcript courtesy of Horror Lair.

I’m listening to Shadowmagic by John Lenahan. Shadowmagic is a fun fantasy adventure novel very loosely based on Irish mythology. Conor is a teenager whisked away to Tir na Nog, the mystical land of the ancient Celts. – Don

The Discussion board is still resting

The discussion board is still resting. The good news is that the restore went well. The bad news is that every single message needs to be re-uploaded. That is happening now we I type. That will take a couple of hours.

The Three Musketeers I’m guessing you want to hear more about what I got for my birthday.

I got Pevear’s new translation of The Three Musketeers, Kate Mosse’s Labyrinth , Jasper Fforde’s latest Nursery Crime novel, The Fourth Bear and Dava Sobel’s The Planets. – Don
